County library’s Bookmobile makes life easier for readers By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

“It’s a godsend. I can’t wait for it to come every week!” said Carol Lee Green, arms filled with books and her dog-friend Lulubelle. Green, who said she reads four to five books a week, is grateful for the familiar sight of the Bookmobile South inching into the Pinckney Hall parking lot in Sun City. The Beaufort County Library has two bookmobiles with routes divided to serve the northern and southern parts of the county. The southern circuit makes 50 scheduled stops monthly. On Thursdays, it’s at the Riverbend Lodge parking lot from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and in the Pinckney Hall parking lot in Sun City from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lindsay Malphrus, senior library assistant, and a member of the Mobile Services and Outreach department of the Beaufort County Library, has been in her position more than two years. Using her uncanny memory, she greets everyone on her route

by name, asks if they liked the books they are returning, and has a personalized recommendation in mind. Susan Moore, the circulation manager at the Hilton Head branch, assists with staffing

the bookmobile every other week. According to the library’s website, the county’s first mobile library was operated out of the Laura Towne Library at Penn Community Center on St. Helena. In 1956,

books were distributed from personal cars to children on St. Helena and Lady’s Islands. When the demand for books was more than the cars could hold, they got a $400 grant to purchase a used bookmobile. Many bookmobiles followed, including one that had shelves that opened to the outside. In 1993, the service was suspended, because the bookmobile was in need of extensive maintenance. The services were reborn when a new bookmobile was ordered in 2016 and Amanda Dickman, the current Beaufort County Library director, was hired as a bookmobile librarian. In 2017, a second bookmobile was purchased by the friends of the Hilton Head Library. There was one to serve Northern Beaufort County and the other, Southern Beaufort County. Now, when books are requested, they are moved from one of the 21 counties that share a main catalogue to Beaufort, where they are sorted and labeled for the

recipients. Sun City is the busiest stop for the South of the Broad bookmobile. That stop and Riverbend are the only places the bookmobile goes every week. Because of pandemic restrictions, patrons are not yet able to browse the bookmobile stacks. As a solution, Malphrus made newbook cards. These cards, positioned on the table outside the bookmobile, have pictures of the covers of the books, so patron can still browse. If patrons request a particular title that’s not available on the bookmobile, Malphrus will do her best to bring it on the next trip. On a morning in June, patrons shared thoughts about the bookmobile. The comments were sparkling! The bookmobile and its staff are “splendid,” “easy,” “terrific,” “spectacular,” “friendly,” “efficient,” “fantastic,” “convenient,” and “a wonder.” Those from Sun City are a learned bunch who have a passion for books and libraries, and there is no doubt the bookmobile is cherished. Every single one of the 24 people waiting to pick up books had a great library story! For Darcy Bernstein, a bookmobile volunteer and a former school librarian, her love for bookmobiles goes back to her childhood. “Yes, there is something magical about the bookmobile. When I was a child, I lived in Scott Township, a small suburb of Pittsburgh. A bookmobile came to town weekly.” Bernstein remembers the wooden shelves in the bookmobile, and the librarian who knew what series she was reading, and always had the next one ready for her when

she came. Cheryl Lituchy remembers her first library card number: J88997. She said her mom wanted her to have activities that would keep her occupied – so she taught her young Cheryl to read and to knit before she started kindergarten. “My mother liked those activities because they kept me in one place,” she said. Jeff Kaffee remembers getting his library card at age 7. The first book he checked out was Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation.” The librarian suggested he keep a dictionary by his side as he read it. Bob Mack is a self-described strong reader and avid walker who was waiting to get an audiobook. He checked out “Good Health Good Life,” in the Playaway format, which provides a book preloaded onto something that looks like a cassette. All the user needs are earbuds to listen. Mack is 80 years old, walks 4 to 6 miles per day, and said he is going to use the book to keep him company. Joyce Finn lauded the depth of commitment of the staff. “Our family had a sudden death. I called the library to tell them that I would not be there to return my books or pick up those I had put on hold,” she said. “After my call, I got two emails of condolence from staff. That meant a lot to us.” Sherry Little summed it up: “Lindsay knows everyone. She will always send you off with something,” she said. “I think this (the bookmobile) is the best thing since sliced bread. This is one of the best community services.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Softball league’s draft makes for pre-season excitement

BOB CRAGIN

Rich Matera makes a big play during a recent game. Matera is one of the Softball Club managers who participates in the draft process.

By Gwyneth J. Saunders CONTRIBUTOR

Hot on the heels of Major League Baseball’s 2021 draft comes the equally critical exercise for a local league. The Sun City Softball Club’s draft is scheduled for July 27-30, after which nearly 300 playing members will learn their fates. At least 25 teams will claim players for the men’s, women’s and coed leagues. While the salaries and bonuses are radically different from the pro league, the interest locally is equally keen, benefits include great camaraderie, and the Tuesday hotdog sales bring out more than sports lovers. Club president Mitch Sacks, who will manage the Elite Physical Therapy team for the sixth season, says competition to play is great, and this year’s efforts will include ensuring everyone who wants to play has a place to play. “We’ve started a new initiative called Fair Play, and we’re trying to get everybody a place to play,” he said. “Right after the registration ends, all of the competition com-

mittees will meet to go over their numbers, and we’ll plan how we’re going to move forward.” Sacks said the total number of registered players might generate an increase in the number of teams playing. “Right now, the Tuesday-Thursday league has 10 teams with 11 players per team, and the Saturday league has 10 teams with 12 players,” he said. “The Peg Welch Ladies League has 48 players signed up and four teams. That’s really a great number for the ladies because they’ve only been active for two years. As an instructional league, everyone plays who signs up in that league.” According to the club’s website, each of the competition committees are appointed to their positions from among the active members in their individual leagues. In addition to determining league season schedules, and the number and size of teams, they also coordinate selection and approval of team managers and coaches for each season; arbitrate protests and other complaints generated by league operations; establish

SOFTBALL from page 8SC rules and procedures for the operation of the league; coordinate with other league CCs to promote a cooperative environment in the SCHHSC; and provide pertinent and timely information to all league members on current issues affecting the league. “People don’t realize that – especially Tuesday-Thursday as a manager – I have already started my draft numbers. In my eyes, you’ve got to pick players that have chemistry, that work well together, that are good in the dugout,” said Sacks. “Do I look for the superstars? If I can get one and he fits the rest of the criteria, that’s fine. Once the registration is done, we’ll know more on Ratings Day.” On Ratings Day, all of the managers grade the players, the committees then look over the ratings sheets and make a determination of an overall grade to each player. The grade ranges from 1 to 5 with everything in between, with 5 being the best, based on four basic categories: batting, fielding, hitting and running. The Saturday League uses 1-to-5 also, but gives 1 the highest value. Sacks said that the previous rating system gave each part equal value but this

year batting might carry a bit more weight. “After the ratings day, the Tuesday-Thursday managers and the competition committee will meet. They’ll talk about the ratings of the new people, and many of the ratings that might be changed for the current roster,” he said. Ratings could change for a player from season to season if, for instance, they are returning from an injury or surgery that could alter their performance, or if they played in fewer than three games over the past two seasons. For some players, getting a chance to play is satisfaction enough. “I started playing here in 2013,” said Stephen Murray. “The last time I played ball before here I was 28. Right now I am a pitcher, and I don’t have any preferences. I feel like I get along with anybody. Are there some guys I would prefer to play for? Yes, but it doesn’t matter to me what manager I play for. I’m happy wherever I go. A lot of the managers are pretty good, and they know what positions guys can play or not.” Once the players are all rated, each league’s managers get together and conduct

said. “You really have to study, and be aware of who is left on the rosters during the draft.” Even before the leagues know how many players there will be, managers like Sacks have already begun thinking about the upcoming season and last season’s performance. There aren’t salary caps or free agents, but most of the managers know who’s capable of what and who is not, and many – like Sacks – have already begun working with their coaches on who they’d like to select. Once the draft is finished, managers do have the opportunity to make a trade. “I want to have fun, I want to have a winning season, but I want it to be an opportunity for everyone to enjoy,” said Sacks. Opening days are Aug. 31 for the Tuesday-Thursday League with hotdogs on Tuesday, Sept. 4 for the Saturday League, and Sept. 5 for the Peg Welch Ladies League. The championship for all leagues is Nov. 13.

their drafts on different days. The managers draw a number to determine who goes first, second, third, etc. They will also be given a point total that they must reach by adding the rating of each player they draft in the first five rounds. “The draft is really, really important, and you have to study it,” Sacks said. “We have to reach a certain total of points, which has not yet established this year in the Tuesday-Thursday League. That number is the ratings total of the first five picks made by the managers. For example, in the first round if you choose a player who is rated as a 5, then you subtract that five points from the total. Then you pick the next one you want out of the remaining players. After you reach the maximum, then you can pick anyone you want.” Some players – certain pitchers and shortstops – are labeled “protected,” rather like franchise football players. Managers can pick only one of them, unless they are still available after the first five rounds. “Having been around a while, we know the talent. You think you know who the other managers are going to pick,” Sacks

Spreading love for the planet at new Earth Day celebration By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR

Sun City held its first Earth Day celebration in 2019. Participating clubs and groups felt it had been a success and looked forward to an even better event in 2020. Alas, plans to join in the worldwide celebration of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary were crushed as COVID-19 shut down our community. An April 2021 date was reserved for the Pavilion immediately after the 2020 cancellation. Displays and presentations were updated and anticipation was high for the long-awaited festivities. These hopes were dashed as high winds and heavy rain forced yet another cancellation. PHOTOS BY TOM MILLS The Environmental Action Group Raymond Dominick mans the booth for the Environmental Action Group. (EAG), which had been formed after the success of the 2019 event, volunteered to host a replacement event in the only open slot in the now busy Pavilion schedule, on the afternoon of May 27. All but one of those who had planned to participate in the cancelled event re-upped and a few new ones were added. A new event name, Every Day is Earth Day, was chosen to accommodate for Earth Day having actually been celebrated more than a month earlier. Despite the short timeframe for planning this event, the difficulty in advertising it to the community, and the wind that kept knocking down the displays, Every Day Is Earth Day was a success. The All About Art Club held drawings for 27 pieces that their members had donated, of which 12 were recycled art. The Avant Gardeners group provided information to attendees about pollinators and native plants.

Tom Mills did a great job photographing the goings on. Avant Gardeners shared information on native plants and pollinator gardens. The Democrats of Sun City showed their support to environmental issues. Golf Course Nature Tours shared information about their popular golf cart excursions. EAG Energy Conservation, 4Rs, Land & Water, Solar, and Transportation Teams all discussed their environmental efforts. The 4Rs Team had lots of waste reduction items to give away. Outside organizations, including Coastal Conservation League, Conservation Voters of South Carolina, Friends of Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge, and South Carolina Audubon, offered information on the various environmental issues their groups support. Local solar installers, Coastal Carolina Energy and Hilton Head Solar, were kept busy discussing the facts and fiction of rooftop solar. Hilton Head Window Film shared their method of helping keep homes cooler. Sun City resident, Phil Mastman, sharing his Tesla and his understanding of electric vehicles was a popular stop, as were the Reichenbach Chevrolet and Vaden Nissan displays. EAG is already working with other SCHH Clubs to co-sponsor an even better event for Earth Day 2022, scheduled for April 23 in the Pavilion. Mark your calendar now. David W. Smith is a member of the Environmental Action Group of Sun City Hilton Head.

Safety & Service volunteers provide needed services By Pete Albero CONTRIBUTOR

Safety & Service is an organization comprised of resident volunteers who unselfishly serve to make Sun City Hilton Head a better place. These services help reduce costs by not requiring paid staff to fill these functions. When Sun City was 5 years old and growing in 2000, there was a desire to offset security costs yet continue to provide a safe and secure environment. A resident committee was formed, which contacted other 55+ communities in Florida and Texas. Some of these communities were not gated and wanted resident volunteers for “visibility” as a safety concern. After consulting with Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner, organizers formed Safety & Service to provide much more than “visibility” for Sun City. The original 42 volunteers manned the guest lane at the main entrance, provided vehicle registration services for the community, and created Patrol 3, a roving truck that drives daily throughout Sun City, augmenting our Security staff on safety issues and providing resident services. Also, during special events, these volunteers provided traffic and parking assistance. In 2019, Safety & Service (S&S) changed from a service organization to a board appointed committee reporting directly to the board of directors. With this change, Security assumed all front gate functions, with S&S serving in three areas: Vehicle Registration, Patrol 3 and Special Events. The biggest initial challenge for vehicle registration was to convert all vehicles from a visual bar code system to one using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for identification. This change affected not only residents’ automobiles but trucks, golf carts, LSV’s and RV’s, as well as employee and community vehicles. This conversion started in 2018 and to date, over 30,000 RFID stickers have been installed. About 80 to 90 vehicles are registered each week at Palmetto Commons, requiring three S&S volunteers daily. Historical-

ly, it was done on a first-come, first-served basis, which often resulted in long waits. Currently it’s done on an appointment basis which is much more convenient and efficient for residents. A test RFID reader has been set up replicating a gate reader for validation of the installation on the vehicle. Special Events, formally known as Red Shirts, provides support for both Lifestyles and other events with traffic, parking and resident assistance. These activities supplement and work in conjuction with our security staff. Notable are concerts, performances, political visits, the Parking Lot sale, Fourth of July and commemorative celebrations. The Special Events team assistance results in a more pleasant resident experience. Patrol 3 (P3) is a daily roving patrol truck similar to a security vehicle. The staff covers the community looking for safety issues, delivers community association mail to residents, provides battery jump start help for residents, oversees unmanned gates during breakdowns, assists with traffic control in emergencies (accidents, EMT calls). The P3 truck carries an AED and other safety equipment and routinely checks stationary items as AED’s, fire extinguishers, etc., while working in conjuction with our security staff.

Opportunities exist for residents to join Safety & Service on an assigned day or as available basis in either Vehicle Registration, Special Events or Patrol 3. For more
