On June 20, the truck and trailer wound through eight neighborhoods on the south side of Sun City, stopping along the way to be loaded with collected school supplies, before heading to Ridgeland Elementary School.Simultaneously, a school bus made pickups in 17 neighborhoods on the north side of Sun City, and other communities, on route to the Hardeeville Public Works build ing where 25 volunteers came to sort the supplies before taking them to Hardeeville Elementary School and Royal Live Oaks Academy of Arts and Sciences Charter SchoolPartners(RLOA.)incoordinating the event are Jennifer Combs, Hardeeville Recreation and Tourism director, and Harry Williams, May or of Hardeeville and a Sun City resident. “You have to understand generational poverty exists in Jasper County. We do ev erything we can to help families stretch their budgets,” Williams said. “Fill the Bus serves 2,700 Jasper County public school students and 700 kids at the charter school Royal Live Oaks Academy. “We have to help. It’s for the kids,” said Chris Chase of the recent efforts of Sun City residents to provide school supplies for local students.Chase, who is in her second year orga nizing Sun City’s south side neighborhoods, joins north-sider Beth Williams to coordi nate the annual Fill the Bus Campaign to collect school supplies for Ridgeland and Hardeeville schools.
The endeavor started years ago when late Hardeeville councilman and Sun City resident David Spisso put a collection box in the Lake House. Community participation has expanded exponentially, and this year includes residents of Sun City, Margarita ville, Riverton Point, Hilton Head Lakes and other surrounding communities. Fill the Bus contributions increased every year, and quickly outgrew the trunks and backseats of the organizers. Now a school bus and a truck with trailer do the pick-ups.

Principal Renata Johnson-Green of Rid geland Elementary School echoed this. “We greatly appreciate the supplies. They benefit so many of our students,” she said. “We have 849 Pre-K though fifth graders. We got book bags from the United Way, and we are able to fill them with school supplies. It is wonderful. We feel like we were all being taken care of!” Trailing behind the caravan collecting supplies in the Sun City neighborhoods pro vided a great opportunity to ask participants about their favorite school supplies. For Wayne and Cathy Salkowicz, it’s backpacks. They collected 22. “Every little kid needs a back pack,” Cathy said.
At the end of the day, after talking to scores of volunteers and donors, the handsdown favorite of all school supplies is crayons … especially the red ones that still have a Barbarapoint.Dempsey picked crayons and pa per as her favorites. She is from the Garden Walk neighborhood, which was one of the last to have their stash of supplies picked up. “I don’t want any child to feel embar rassed. It really does take a village.”

This project is very personal for Chase. Her mother was a single mom with three kids. “I didn’t realize it until I got older, but my mom struggled to take care of us. My first school memory was in fourth grade. It was so sad,” she said. “I remember the first day of school, and everyone in my class had beautiful supplies when they came to school. I had a yellow pad my mom got from her work, and a pen. The teacher said I was unprepared, and I was sent to the principal’s office. I was the only one who did not have everything I needed, and I was embarrassed.”Chasesaidthat memory resurfaced during the Fill the Bus campaign. “My feelings came back when we presented the supplies we collected to the vice principal, Heather McDonough, at Ridgeland Elemen tary School,” she said. “She watered up and so did I. She talked about the kids who do not have things, but are too proud to ask.”
Patricia Wilson is one of several Sun City residents who work at one of these schools. Wilson, who is going into her 50th year teaching first graders, is on the faculty at RLOA.“Itell the kids about where the supplies come from. I tell them that these things are brand new supplies; they are not handme-downs,” Wilson said. “The people who gave the supplies wanted children they don’t even know, to have brand new school supplies. I wish the donors could see the children’s faces and the teacher’s faces when they walk into the gym and see all the supplies! It’s amazing. The children and teachers are very appreciative.”
