“What happens when something you love is broken and you can’t fix it?” Our 11-year-old grandson asks tough questions. We were on the beach with two boogie boards – one with a broken leash, and the other cracked in two. I knotted the leash from the broken board onto the intact board, and voila! Back to the waves! This fix was easy. Fixes for people is not. I’m the baby of our family. Lilly, the eldest, was always larger than life. She dined at Buckingham Palace with Prince Charles and Camilla, and was hired by a U.S. TV network to identify unknowns as they arrived at royal weddings. She was an election observer for the U.N. in Yemen, and on an International Rescue Committee visit to Lesbos to report on the Mediterranean-African immigrant crisis. During the summer of

my 50th birthday, she sent me 50 gifts, each with an original poem. Now, Lilly has dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, so the story of Lilly’s changes will be familiar in our community. Her fierce independence hid her symptoms. Lilly lived alone in a Victorian house, and she could never find her address book. She used me as the go-to when she needed contact information. She hired, and generously reimbursed assistants to do mundane tasks. When I visited her home, it was not unusual to find a stranger sifting through mail, or on the phone with a credit card company. On a whim, Lilly moved to a tiny Midwestern town. I trekked to visit seven times in 2019. Each time things were a bit worse. Bills were scattered and unpaid. More than 50 magazine

MEMORIES from page 6SC subscriptions flooded her mailbox. We asked her to move South with us, but she said no. She stayed in her home, doors barricaded with stacked chairs and tables. She hallucinated, and drank to blunt her fear. The stairs in her home became unscalable, and we transformed the parlor couch into a bed. She was scared and frequently called the police, who called me from 1,000 miles away to fix the problem. One especially tough evening she landed in an E.R. Navigating services in rural America is challenging. Lilly lashed out, so typical nursing homes and assisted living facilities would not take her. We went to court, where she convinced a judge she was well, and she retained her ability to make decisions. We finally found an apartment in an assisted living facility, and watched Lilly change. Before any of this happened, I worked as a nurse, and set up residential facilities for people with dementia. I read

stacks of books. I spent time visiting and learning at the Memory Care Center at St. Anne’s Salvatorian campus in Milwaukee, Wisc. I wrote training materials on advocacy and environmental adaptations. Yet, as Lilly changed, I was stunned. She’d rather sleep than eat. The roller coaster of her abilities reflected the inconsistencies of dementia. When Prince Phillip died, I called to tell her, and she immediately related his family tree, including details about Danish and Greek royalty. We continue to search for ways to maintain relationships with Lilly. We know: It’s never good to feel left out. When we’re together, Lilly is the center of conversations. We telephone often, and understand that the first step is to figure out what she’s thinking about. I collect articles to read to her so I’m ready when she says, “Tell me what’s happening.” It‘s tiring to be confused. We’ve learned to stop the conversation when her attention fades.

It’s important to have an advocate. Lilly was exquisitely well-read and verbally skilled, and she knows when she is being respected. Her caregivers have learned that even if she asks a question repeatedly, she needs a response. It does no good to let irritation creep into the interaction. And, we know, no one can do it alone. A wonderful Lowcountry resource is Memory Matters, a nonprofit organization that serves those with dementia and their caregivers, as well as offers programs to enhance brain health. Ashley Gruber, a board-certified licensed counselor specializing in brain health and memory, explained that caregiver support groups have continued virtually throughout the pandemic. “Now everyone knows about Zoom, it’s easy, and the numbers of participants have grown so much that we went from four to six groups,” she said. “We have local participants and people from all over – even Mexico! In the future, we will continue our support groups with

a hybrid model … in-person and those who use Zoom.” Memory Matters’ in-person Compass Day Program has reopened and is accepting new families. It serves people who have mild to moderate dementia. For information about their services call 843-842-6688. The Alzheimer’s Association also has online support groups, on-demand trainings, and other services, as well as a plethora of information for those experiencing memory loss and their caregivers. For information, visit Alz. org. Their 24-hour helpline is 800-2723900. On the beach, our grandson hadn’t waited for an answer. He was back in the waves. That fix worked! Lilly’s struggle with dementia continues, and our bewildering attempts to make things right go on. We’ll meet Lilly where she is. That’s as close as we’ll get to a fix. Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Bluebirds have found Sun City an amendable place to live By David W. Smith CONTRIBUTOR

Eastern bluebirds are one of the most recognizable songbirds in Sun City, especially the males, with their brilliant blue backs and wings. As year-round residents of South Carolina, they are now quite common in our community. This would not have been the case without a great deal of human intervention. Between the 1920s and 1970s, the bluebird population declined by an estimated 90%. Loss of habitat was a leading cause of their decline. Bluebirds are cavity nesters, and as trees, including dead snags, were removed for development and logging, the natural cavities – their preferred nesting sites – were lost. Fewer nests led to fewer babies. Efforts led by the Audubon Society and other conservation groups have

seen the population increase 5% per year since the mid ’70s. Numerous groups have been formed explicitly to support bluebirds. The installation of man-made nesting boxes has been a leading contributor to the recovery. The Sun City population has greatly increased due to the efforts of the SCHH Bird Club over the past 10 years. Club members have built and installed more than 300 nest boxes throughout our community. Each hole on our three golf courses has at least one box in the proximity of the tees. More than 120 boxes are located on community property. All of these boxes are monitored by club members throughout the nesting season. The club has sold and installed more than 100 boxes in residents’ backyards – 52 this year alone. Purchasing information is available at schhbirdclub@gmail.com; club membership is not required. This year, our backyard box produced three clutches with a total of 14 fledges. A pair of adults made many visits to the box before decid-

ing to nest there. Once a home location is decided, both parents gather pine needles and grasses, from which the female builds a cup-shaped nest – in which she lays three to six eggs, one per day. She then sits on the nest intermittently for about two weeks until hatching, and all eggs hatch within hours. Once hatched, the babies are fed insects and caterpillars nearly non-stop by both parents, during daylight hours. The babies grow rapidly to nearly the parents’ size before fledging, usually in about two and a half weeks. We removed the nests after fledging, as bluebirds will not reuse the nest, but will build another nest on top of it, putting the nestlings in danger of predators or falling from the nest. Having a backyard box has afforded us a closer look at nature. David W. Smith is a member of the Environmental Action Group of Sun City Hilton Head.

Best reason for heading South: Not too cold, not too hot By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR

I am the first to admit that I have always hated cold weather. Even as a youngster, I never wanted to play outside in the winter. My poor mother would take the time to dress me up in my pink snowsuit with white boots, scarf and mittens. Then she’d send me off to play in the cold freezing flurries. I would be crying as soon as I got shoved out the back door. I’d plunk myself down in that fluffy white powder and purposely wet through my pants and snowsuit. I knew my mother would allow me back inside the warmth of the house. It worked every time! So, when my husband mentioned that it was his longtime dream to live in Phoenix, I was on board. He had been stationed there in the Navy in the late ’50s and fell in love with the area. In the ’70s, we decided to head west with the prospect of finding paradise. We were driving a big hog of a Pontiac convertible. Our intention was to check out the area, price housing and spend four days in our future dream area ... in July. Now, I was such a perfectionist that I would never dream of leaving the house without a full face of makeup. My hair had to be perfectly groomed and the “uniform” of the times was a mini skirt and go-go boots. So there I was, dressed to kill, when our car overheated in the desert in 120-degree weather. I could have fried chicken inside that vehicle, while we sat there waiting for the engine to cool down. I was beyond hot by the time we were back on the road. However, the second time we overheated, I was getting a little “testy,” to say the least. I had a human hair wig neatly

plopped on my head. My natural bangs and exposed sides were soaking wet from sweat dripping off my forehead, nose and chin. The next thing I knew, some big black bug had landed on my cheek. I was freaking out! I pulled down the visor mirror to see if it was a scorpion. Heavy black mascara was slowly running down my flushed cheeks – and that “bug” ended up being one of my false eyelashes, which had come unglued. My hair and wig were so plastered to my face that I had the appearance of just exiting the shower. Half an hour later, hubby got the car going again but now our air-conditioner wasn’t working. I insisted on stopping for something cold to drink. We pulled off the freeway when we saw a restaurant. I could hardly wait to get inside the cool diner to order a nice tall iced tea. Within 10 minutes I was shivering so badly my teeth were chattering. My wet clothing was stuck to my overheated body that was being blasted with extremely cold air-conditioning. I could hardly wait to return to our hot car. We pulled into Phoenix that evening. It was 117 degrees in the shade at 6 p.m. I was like a raving maniac with soaked clothing, mascara all over my face, one eyelash and a sopping wet wig plastered to my head. We cut our trip short, by spending only that night in Phoenix, before moving on to California for a vacation. Phoenix was never mentioned again. A few years later we were transferred to Houston. What was the difference? Phoenix was like living inside an oven. Houston was like living in a damp smoldering sauna! What did I learn? South Carolina is perfect! Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
