Residents come out in droves, finding joy, exercise on bikes

While describing his route, an alarm sounded, demonstrating a new-age safety feature. “When I jumped off my bike, my Apple-Watch thought I had fallen,” Albero explained. “I have to answer the question, or the watch will call 911!”

Sports Addiction’s Buser added, “I’m not sure what the future holds.

During the lockdown, we had a program where we rented bikes, 30 days for $30. If we lock down again, we’ll do it again. I try to help everyone out there.”

So, it’s unanimous: There are plenty of cyclists riding and they are having a great time. Krystyna Johnson summed it up well. “I ride almost all the streets in Sun City – north side and south side, and I’m lovin’ it!”

“If you want to stay healthy, ride a bike!” Bill Tomiso II, owner of Lab Cyclery in Bluffton, describes a boon in bike sales and biking; and the evidence in Sun City is clear.

Bike riders of every stripe are on the roads at dawn, and throughout the day, and they have smiles on their faces.

“It’s easier than going for a walk,” said Ed Baker, a long-time rider who is thrilled with his new Catrike, a recumbent bike. He and his wife, Chris, both got lime green ones. “I feel safe, the visibility is good, and they are so comfortable. Bill (Tomiso) adjusted them for our weights and heights, so the bikes fit us perfectly.

People stop me all the time to ask how we store them. They are foldable!”

Tomiso and his wife, Lisa, sell and repair bikes at Lab Cyclery. Catrikes are their specialty, but they are hard to get right now. When asked if the apparent bike shortage is caused by the Chinese embargo or the pandemic, Tomiso replied, “Probably a little of both.”

They also sell Revolution and Prism kites. “Lisa cuts the kites up to make the bike flags,” Tomiso said.

“They are big, so the biker cannot be missed, and they flap and make noise, which is good. The cyclist can be heard.”

Jim Buser, the owner of Sports Addiction in Okatie Village, has also been busy with sales, rentals and repairs. “Bikes are like gold bricks,” he said. “I did a year’s worth of business in four months. We sell comfort bikes. I have 110 bikes on back order. Three wheelers? I’ve sold 65.

And if you’re going to buy a bike for Christmas, buy it now.”

New bikes are not the only way to go. Dennis Johnson got his bike from the Sun City Buy and Sell Facebook page. “I had ridden in Rhode Island, and Atlanta, where we lived right at the beginning of the Appalachian

Trail,” he said. “It was hilly there.

Moving here is perfect for a bike – no hills!”

A return from a bike riding hiatus is not unusual among some of the riders. Krystyna Johnson (no relation to Dennis) started riding 50 years ago. “I’d take my little daughter and strap her on a carrier on the back of my bike and we’d ride about 20 miles,” she said. “Then I got away from it, but returned five to six years ago. I’ve ridden in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and we’ve ridden closer to home.”

Johnson said some of the bike trails in Greenville are awesome. But, “Mostly we ride the streets of Sun City,” she said. “It gives me a good sense of accomplishment. I like pushing myself to go farther.”

Some cyclists, like Pete Albero, never stopped riding. “I’m not a professional rider. I ride 12 to 15 miles each day in Sun City,” he said. “I ride to the fitness center each morning.

Sometimes I have an afternoon to kill, so I go to the grocery store on Buckwalter. It’s bike trail all the way.

A healthy environment is an important issue even when our society is faced with economic crises, wars and unending social problems. It matters because Earth is the only home we have, while it also provides air, food, water and numerous other necessities.

With this in mind, the Environmental Action Group is being formed. The group was recently approved by the Sun City Hilton Head Community Association and is now a Registered Group in Formation.

The group started informally as the Global Climate Group, whose goal was to make a presentation at the 2019 Earth Day community event. After the event, the group stayed together and worked with the SCHHCA board of directors to review and then relax the Design Guidelines restricting rooftop solar installations.

The Environmental Action Group’s mission is research, education and promotion of actions that individuals and communities can take to create a more sustainable environment. The group plans to address climate and environmental issues, conserving energy, promoting renewable energy and reducing waste.

Efforts will include, but not be limited to: • The study of renewable energy sources • Promotion of actions and lifestyles that support a healthy environment including: – energy-efficient transportation

– replacing, reducing and recycling of material waste – land conservation and regeneration – clean air and water • Support of environmental justice issues.

The group will focus upon actions that Sun City residents and people in the southern Lowcountry can take to help ameliorate the environmental and climate crises. The group will be a nonpartisan organization.

The group is currently working in several areas: • Researching the local availability of electric cars and charging stations • Working with legislators in an effort to improve solar regulation • Developing plans to get comprehensive recycling information to our community • Studying community and regional composting and its possibilities in our region.

The group seeks new members, including one or two to serve on the leadership team. Sun City residents who are interested in joining the group or those seeking further information are invited to contact environmentalactiongroupschh@gmail. com.

With all these toys, it’s amazing we get anything done

My husband is into toys.

He recently purchased a toy that lets us know when it’s raining. We have not one, but two such toys, on high poles in the backyard. When it begins to rain, these devices are supposed to beep a signal to his desk.

The first time No. 1 adult child heard it chirping, she questioned the sound. I explained to her that this “toy” notifies her father that it’s raining outside. Then she asked a silly question: “Can’t he just look out the window and see that it’s a monsoon?

Doesn’t the thunder and lightning give him a clue?”

Yet there’s a flaw with this toy.

Some days that beeper is beeping its little heart out and – guess what?

There’s absolutely not one rain cloud in the sky. Sun is out, birds are chirping but the “rain toy” is blasting a false signal.

His other toy is Alexa. She turns on the lights, compiles our grocery list and she even notifies us when someone calls. The phone rings. Alexa screams, “843-222-2222 is calling.

It’s Santa Claus. Santa Clause is on the line.”

You can pick up the phone and begin a conversation, with a human, but Alexa still screams that Santa Claus is on the line.

In case you haven’t guessed, I really hate that broad.

The frosting on the cake is that it takes “the man of the house” four rings, with that pulsating hag screaming, before he picks up the receiver.

“Why,” you ask? Because he has to take the time to read the caller ID to verify that Alexa has it correct! It IS indeed Santa.

To escape the beeping and screaming of Alexa, and her chirping yard friends, you might suggest going for a ride. Well, we have another toy for that. It’s called a GPS.

Picture this! We’re heading to a new doctor. (At our age, we only go to doctors or the grocery store.)

Hubby plugs in the information on the GPS (I call her Murtle). Then, he hands me a printed map from MapQuest as backup.

Off we go, heading down 278 to Hilton Head Island. As we approach the hospital, Murtle tells us to turn left in 500 feet. He understands that turn because we’ve been to the hospital before.

But here’s the tricky part. As we’re approaching the new medical complex, that we’ve never been to before, Murtle tells us to make a right turn in 500 feet. Then she reminds us again, then finally says to turn right NOW! Next thing I hear is “Recalculating.

Make a U-turn and head south.”

You guessed it. With all those instructions, he missed the turn. So we try again. This time, we travel around and around the parking lot trying to find the suite. Murtle keeps saying we’ve arrived at our destination, but we don’t see the building.

Well, lucky for us, we have yet another mechanical device: a smart phone! So, we call the doctor’s office to ask them where they might be hiding. Generally, they end up being in some office next to the live oak tree that’s behind the outhouse.

We finally find the office and I crash through the door of the new doctor, wet hair plastered to my face, make-up dripping and smudged, but with a fake smile pasted on my face announcing that I have arrived. Such a sight.

A house full of man toys. A car loaded with even more toys. There is no escaping this mechanical world that we live in.

I want the return of the America I grew up in.

Helping Hands

GFWC Woman’s League recently made a donation to Staying Connected of Sun City, a 501(c)(3) charity operated by Sun City residents whose mission is to provide support for their Sun City neighbors who are facing life’s challenges. The $1,500 donation will help Staying Connected weather the impact of the COVID-19 virus on its ability to fund operations. The organization was forced to cease in-person services but continued to reach out to check on the well-being of its members. Recently, the group resumed limited medical transportation services with stringent COVID-19 protocols in place to protect volunteers and members. Guidelines for recycling in bins The benefits of recycling include saving natural resources, making new products out of waste, reducing the impact on our landfills, and creating jobs. Knowing what we can or should recycle can often be rather confusing.

Our community’s 4Rs Environmental Action Team worked with Waste Management to develop the list below to help Sun City residents better understand what should or shouldn’t go into our green curbside recycling bins.

By following these guidelines, you can help our planet.

(Note that if you take your own recycling to a Beaufort County Center or live in a neighboring community, the rules are somewhat different, so parts of these guidelines might not apply.)

Below is a brief overview of acceptable items by category. Note that Unacceptable items will contaminate all your recyclables and then all will end up in the trash.

Cans, metals: Rinsed aluminum or steel cans. Do not flatten. Labels OK.

(NO scrap metal, cans with paint or hazardous waste, appliances.)

Cardboard: Flattened, clean boxes; large boxes in bundles; cereal or snack boxes (no liners); rinsed milk or juice cartons (no straw). (NO boxes soiled with oil, food.)

Glass: Bottles and jars (metal lids off); no broken glass; all 3 colors, labels OK. (NO ceramics, tableware, windows, light bulbs.)

Magazines, newspapers: Includes soft-cover books, catalogs, newspaper inserts, telephone books. (No wet material, plastic bags.)

Mixed paper: Office or copier paper, envelopes, wrapping paper, junk mail (no heavy glue). (NO tissues, paper towels, neon paper, waxed or foil lined, nothing soiled.)

Plastics, #1-#5: Rinsed drink bottles, food jars, frozen meal packages, yogurt cups, medicine bottles, ketchup, syrup, straws, bottle caps. (NO Stryofoam, plastic wrappers, bags.)
