Artists, beginners get fired up when creating ceramic art By Katherine Mace

Castellucci said she sometimes has no expectations. “When I come into the studio, I often have no idea what I’ll make,” she said. “When the ideas start to flow, I might do three or four pieces in one day.” On the other hand, club member Priscilla Rodites said she likes to take things slowly. “It’s therapeutic and a stress reliever,” she said. “You can do your own thing at your own pace. There is trial and error … but often mistakes can be fixed.” Rodites teaches classes featuring a variety of techniques and tips for embellishing a piece. For instance, if you are making bisqueware, and you don’t like the way it looks, you can spray it with hairspray and repaint it. Rodites said that to make things unique, you can use tricks of the trade like mixing glaze with shaving cream, using soap bubbles, or using chalk and then spraying the piece with an acrylic finish. The ceramics club boasts some members who have art and teaching degrees. “There

“This is definitely a passion for me,” said Judi Castellucci. “I let the clay talk to me.” Castellucci, president of the Sun City Ceramics Club, said she is “mostly self-taught,” and learned by watching others, and trying different techniques. Mindfulness, letting go, fun, and a spirit to try something new are attributes repeatedly mentioned by the artists at work in the club, which has about 230 members, and is open every day. Castellucci says her favorite part of the club is mentoring. The former concierge from Rhode Island described her love of teaching new people to make things using clay. She also teaches the need to let go. “Don’t fall in love with the piece until it’s done,” she tells students. “Things can happen along the way. The pot may crack while drying, or even explode in the kiln. Letting go of expectations is important because things turn out differently than you expect.”

are some real pros,” said Castellucci. “We have awesome members who have amazing skills.” In addition, she said, “There is no negativity in this room.” The club recently made improvements by reorganizing the room so that the classes can all be held in the back. They hope to get additional shelves for members’ clay storage, and a standing table for sculptors. Linda Moore, club treasurer, explained that there is a lot of chemistry – heat, glazes and clay – involved. “Each (piece) I do is an experiment,” she said. “I like being with artists. We like to work together so we can share what we learn. Sometimes a pro can look at a piece and tell you what’s wrong. Working with clay is spiritual, and very meditative. I often think … a lot has to come together to make a piece work.” The final step in the creation process is firing, which uses high heat to convert ceramic work from weak clay into a strong, durable form. When glaze is applied, it bonds with the piece when it is fired again. Jennie Meistrell is in charge of the kiln room. She and her assistant, Kate Vassallo, both have degrees in ceramics. Together, they oversee the firing. This complex operation requires an understanding of heat, electricity, and the science of glazes, water and air.

The results can be a surprise. “It’s either Christmas or Halloween, when we open a kiln after a firing,” Meistrell said. “Usually everybody’s pieces are bright, pretty, and smiling at us, but sometimes the unexpected happens.” Members pay for all supplies, which are available to buy at the club. The artists also pay each time a piece is fired. The cost is determined by the size of the piece. The front desk operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Membership is $15 per year. Classes for beginners and people with experience include Beginning and Intermittent Wheel Throwing, Slab Building, and Handbuilding. Bisqueware (pre-made pieces that are formed in a mold) is available to paint and fire. An Open House at The Sun City Ceramics Club will be held Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in conjunction with the Sun City Club Fair, where the club will have a table. All are welcome to stop by the studio that day to enter a free drawing. For more information about membership and club activities, contact Castellucci at judicsc@icloud.com or call 401-286-4731. Joys of photographing the amazing nature of our Lowcountry

SOPHIA SCHADE

Alligators fighting in a lagoon at Donnelley Wildlife Management Area in Green Pond. (Photo taken with Nikon D500 with a prime 500MM/ F5.6/ speed 1/2500 sec. ISO 1250.)

By Sophia Schade CONTRIBUTOR

On Aug. 26, I took a drive to Donnelley Wildlife Management refuge.

It is about an hour from Bluffton, toward Charleston in a little area of Colleton County called Green Pond. My goal for the day was to photograph birds on dead sunflowers, and

SOPHIA SCHADE

Bullfrog at home in a Sun City lagoon. (Photo taken with Nikon D500 with a prime 500MM/ F5.6/ speed 1/1200 sec. ISO 1600.)

anything that flies. To my surprise I photographed and documented two fights – but not between birds. One fight was two Black Whistling ducks, and the other was two big male alligators. I took about 1,200 photos of the alligator fight. The before, during, and end of the fight lasted about 8 minutes; my first photo was taken at 10:07 a.m. and the last at 10:15 a.m. At the end of the fight, I actually ran to my car. I was afraid that one of the alligators was going to come up to the levy where I was standing. I wish I had had my tripod with me. About half of the images were out of focus due to my excitement of what I was photographing. Alligators live in fresh and brackish water habitats but will venture into salt water. Alligators inhabit swamps, tidal marshes, creeks and rivers, canals, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. In some areas, alligators do something that only a few species, such as humans and beavers, do – create wetland habitat. In marsh, sawgrass, and floodplain habitats gators sometimes create “gator holes,” which provide a refuge for many other animals during dry periods. Alligators create the holes, which

can be the size of a small backyard pool, using their snout, forefeet, and tail. Alligators are called a “keystone species” due to the strong influence they have on other species. (The above information comes from various sources on the internet.) The photo of the bullfrog was taken Aug. 9 in a Sun City lagoon. I had been visiting this particular lagoon to photograph water lilies. To my surprise, an alligator started moving toward the edge – then the frogs started jumping. My focus was diverted from the gator to the frogs. Did you know…? The top of a bullfrog is green, and the belly is cream or yellow colored. They have large eyes with almond shaped pupils. Bullfrogs have short front legs, and long, muscular rear legs. The rear feet have webbing between most of the toes, but the front feet have no webbing. Male bullfrogs are smaller than females, and have bright yellow throats. (The above information comes from various sources on the internet.)

Signs of aging are sometimes worth a good laugh By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR

When my brother began going through the process of losing his hair, he decided to buy a new product that had just been advertised on the market. He purchased a can of brown-colored spray and applied the contents to his head according to the directions. That afternoon, he and his wife attended a lovely outdoor wedding venue located in the impressive gardens of a prestigious facility. By mid-afternoon the temperatures had reached the mid 80s. My brother was never a fan of hot weather, as it always caused him to sweat. As they stood in these lush gardens, chatting with other guests, his wife noticed trickles of brown sweat running down from the sides of his head. The more he perspired, the faster brown streaks rapidly escaped from his sideburns, dripping onto his white dress shirt and the lapel of his beige suit. People began starring at him. His arrogant

mindset was that the other guests admired his good looks. Little did he know that he was getting more attention than the bride due to his dripping vanity. This incident made me question to what extent will we go to slow down the visual aging process? Oftentimes gentlemen will dye their graying hair jet black, which looks so unnatural on an 80-year-old man. Movie stars often have so much Botox injected into their face that they resemble an

expressionless plastic doll. My husband is now mostly bald, yet his eyebrows are growing every which way across his forehead. His nose hairs appear to gain in momentum each month. My own bangs are thinning out; however, I now have stubborn chin hairs that accompany peach fuzz that appears all over my cheeks. Where did it all come from? Daily my husband and I sound like we’re playing a game of Charades, trying to remember a name or a word that we no

longer can retrieve from memory. We often walk into a room, for some purpose, but have to revert back to our starting point to remember exactly what we wanted in the first place. Unlike many elders, we have learned to laugh at these shortcomings. As a couple, we chuckle at our silliness while dealing with the daily process of aging. I am somewhat amused realizing these changes seem to escalate quarterly. I often think about what WAS and yet have to acknowledge what IS. So, for those of you who are actively playing tennis during your 60s, enjoy it. And, those of you who are still socially busy in your 70s, my hat’s off to you. But remember that, in your 80s, you too will be growing nose hair and plucking your feminine chin hairs, and you might even remember my brother’s brown hair spray dripping down the sides of his face just like Rudy Giuliani. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
