Golf Course Nature Tours offer different views of Sun City

PHOTOS BY FREDDI HOFFMAN

Residents interested in leading the Golf Course Nature Tours must take the training, as these folks did.

By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR

Many of the beautiful views within Sun City are seldom seen by non-golfing residents. The best way to remedy this is to take a Golf Course Nature Tour – or, better yet, four of them. These tours are sponsored by Golf Services, which offers this stated purpose: “To allow non-golfers the opportunity to see the beauty and natural areas that are part of our Sun City amenities, to allow those unfamiliar with nature in the south to learn about native plants and animals, and to pique the interest of non-golfers to learn how to golf.” The tours began in March 2018, the result of a simple question from Charlie Kent, director of golf. Paula Smith (no relation to this writer) and her husband met with Kent regarding the December 2017 bird count. Kent asked if they had considered doing nature tours of the golf courses. Smith liked the idea and got busy. “Freddi Hoffmann and I pulled together a team of volunteers from the Bird Club, Hunting and Fishing Club, Avant Gardeners, and Okatie Farmers,” she said. “We designed four tours – front and back nines of Hidden Cypress and Okatie

Creek, trained a group of guides and drivers, designed hand-outs and photo flip charts of birds and animals, put together a system for residents to sign up for the tours, and held our first tour in March of 2018.” Smith is now chair of the Golf Course Nature Tours Steering Committee, which manages the tours. The committee includes several members from three of the original clubs, plus Golf Services and the new Sun City Golf Club. About 25 volunteers serve as guides who are trained to navigate through the golf courses, sharing their knowledge of Sun City wildlife and history. Each nine offers unique sights. Many folks choose to tour them all. Two-hour tours are held early mornings or late afternoons to avoid interfering with golf, which coincidentally is when nature spotting is at its best. In addition to a wide variety of birds, fox squirrels are frequently seen on golf courses and seldom seen elsewhere in our community. Every nature tour has its own unique show-and-tell to put on display. Tours provide an opportunity for those unfamiliar with the fauna and flora of the Lowcountry to learn and experience nature in

a safe, fun way. Learning about some of our local critters can make living close to them less frightening. Tours typically have been held throughout the year with each season offering special and interesting sights. Each spring, a few tours tailored to grandkids have been offered. This year is obviously not typical, and tours had been cancelled since March. “We have really missed these, as in spring we have very busy rookeries and in summer we offer ‘sunset tours,’” Smith said. She said the tours were approved to restart Sept. 14, with some restrictions. The tours are open to residents only for now, hand-outs can’t be given, and face masks are requested. Tours are offered free of charge. For sign-up opportunities, watch E-News and Club News or visit schhgolfclub.com/nature-tours. Tour capacities are limited and fill quickly. Obsession with weather could have forecast long career By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

Lowcountry eyes and minds are on the Atlantic Ocean and hurricane season, and many are intrigued by complex seasonal weather patterns. Sun City resident Carl Weiss has been thinking about the weather since he was a child. “I grew up on a lake in Massachusetts and my mom would have to call me in out of the rain,” he said. “I loved watching storms approach.” Penn State was and still is a good place to study meteorology, and Weiss got noticed early. “A man came from D.C. to speak with one of our classes and I was in luck. I happened by my advisor’s office where the man stopped to mention he had a job opening,” he said. “My advisor recommended me.” The man was from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Weiss got the job, and that’s

where he spent his entire career. Weiss was in the mix right at the dawn of the weather satellite program, the National Environmental Satellite Information and Data Service, which is a branch of NOAA. His job was to develop techniques for forecasters to use data from the satellites. “We had so much data coming in from the satellites and no one knew quite what to do with it all,” he said. “With weather balloons, we would get data about every 12 hours. With the satellites, it was coming in non-stop.” There are two families of weather satellites: polar orbiting and geostationary. With each orbit, polar satellites scan a different slice of the earth. The geostationary satellites are more than 22,000 miles up and remain above the same spot over the earth. They rotate at the exact rate that the earth does. TOM MILLS While at the satellite service, Weiss used the data from these satellites to Meteorologist Carl Weiss still enjoys watching storms approach. develop interpretation techniques to

help forecasters better analyze imagery. “All weather is unique and challenging to predict for various reasons. Hurricanes and snowstorms are huge and can be easily seen; but it may be that the most difficult to identify is thunderstorm formation.” In 1974, Weiss went on his first business trip – “I looked for tornadoes with Dr. Fujita.” Dr. Ted Fujita researched thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons, and is best known for creating the Fujita scale of tornado intensity and damage. “We flew in and around a storm looking for tornadoes,” Weiss said. “I was in one of several small Cessna airplanes. Fujita flew in a Leer jet above the storm. I never saw a tornado on that trip.” Weiss hastened to add, “I was never one of those crazy storm chasers in a van.”

“I had been at the satellite service for six or seven years when NOAA decided they were going to develop a TV weather show meant as a first-look for airline pilots,” Weiss said. He auditioned and got the part. This was a favorite part of his career. PBS carried the two 15-minute shows each morning for 15 years. “It was fun and innovative,” he said. “We would get calls and letters from people who appreciated the show but would give us hints like ‘quit standing in front of Arizona!’ We solved that problem by putting the maps on a table and standing to the side with a pointer!” The show went off the air in 1995, and Weiss and his on-air partner went back to the National Weather Service, where he landed a position in aviation meteorology. He did outreach, trained forecasters, and worked in observations with commercial airlines. During this time, Weiss worked with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is part of the UN. “We work together with countries from

all over the world to gather and share data,” he said. “I still consult for them.” His career has been fascinating, and his stories could fill volumes – but there were two questions that Weiss needed to be asked. First, what about climate change? “There is no doubt that the climate is changing,” he answered. “The question is how much humankind is influencing these changes. ... It’s a mistake to believe all changes are because of human activity … but we need to be careful.” Also, where does this meteorologist now get weather information and predictions? “Just go to weather.gov. There are interactive maps that give precise information. It’s a very good website.” Weiss remains enthusiastic about his career. “I run across people all the time who tell me, ‘I always wanted to be a meteorologist.’ It was rigorous, but I loved my career!” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Living endless COVID days in our nighties

Page 11SC

HEY SUN CITY!

By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR

It has been eight months since I’ve had a haircut. The same for a pedicure. Eight long months of isolating myself in the house so that the COVID germs don’t attach themselves to my personal being. Eight solid months of living in a nightgown, looking like a hag. Our community has also been on shut down for months. No activities to attend, no luncheons out, no dances at the pavilion. But, since the pool re-opened, I do water walk a few times per week. However, once I return home, that infamous nightie attaches itself back on to my persona. It’s my COVID uniform of choice. My auburn eyebrows and colorful rosy cheeks sit in my makeup drawer. My beautiful eyelashes remain inside the tube of mascara waiting to once again flutter on my face. I tell myself I’m not depressed or bored, yet it’s been months since I cared enough to erase that unkempt reflection of me in the mirror. It’s months since I’ve had any motivation to do anything worthwhile. Napping has become my second greatest form of entertainment. And then there’s the COVID weight gain. I can tell myself that it’s water retention, sodium from Chinese food or bloat from beverages. But the real cause – truthfully – is too little activity and too much sitting. I’ve become a couch potato. I called a lifelong friend the other day. We’ve been friends for 70 years. We grew up together, dated and married around the same time. And now, in our old age, we share stories about our unkempt hair growth and lack of makeup during this quarantine. She wears the same outfit for a week. I do change my nightie frock daily. My friend does, however, draw eyebrows on her face daily. Not me. My friend admits she’s down to showering only once a week. I do better

Don’t you think your Sun City home’s water should taste, smell and feel great every day? than that; but I do return back to the comfort of a clean garment – always a nightgown. The only time I leave the house is for a doctor’s appointment. My husband remarks how pretty I look. It’s the only time my facial products are applied to the surface of my face, thereby giving me brows, noticeable cheeks and dramatic eyes. He thinks I look pretty because it’s the first time he’s seen me in something other than my nighttime attire, with a full face of makeup and hair combed, in months. We talk about how much money we’ve saved. We haven’t eaten out in six months. Chinese take-out is our treat. We get about six weeks to a tank of gas. I cut his hair. Mine has grown to my shoulders, hag-like. We buy nothing new unless the old one falls apart. If this hibernating goes on much longer, my toenails will turn into claws, my hair will be down to my waist, and my nighttime attire will all have to be replenished. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
