Nature of the game makes croquet suitable for all ages By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

It’s a game of elegant simplicity and deft strategy interwoven. Sun City Croquet Club’s game is nothing like what we played in the backyard as kids. Up close, it’s quiet. “It is a game of etiquette and decorum. Sort of like golf,” said club member Maria Foley. “We keep quiet when the person is shooting.” However, there is plenty of laughing and chatting between shots. “The Croquet Club has about 100 members,” said Doug Wright, the club’s affable president. “It’s a great game for the pandemic because we’re outdoors, and we’re automatically social-distanced. Anyone can play, regardless of build or athletic ability, and it’s social. We have a great time.” Traditionally, croquet players wear crisp white linen attire to matches. “All white?” laughed Doug Wright, “I don’t doubt that it used to be strictly upheld

– but we’ve loosened up a bit. People do wear all white, but often have a bit of color on their shirts, or a colored hat band.” He quickly added that “New people come a couple of times before they buy whites.” There are three basic games that can be played. Golf Croquet, which is the most casual; Six Wicket, which promotes innovative shot making; and Aussie Rules, which is a take-off on golf croquet. Wright explained, “Our club usually plays Golf Croquet. It’s team game. Everyone has their own ball, and we play on a ‘lawn.’” Sun City has three adjacent lawns for play. “The same people who take care of the golf courses take care of our lawns. I think they call it ‘bentgrass.’ They do a great job. Members set up the wickets and line the lawns.” The Sun City club is a member of the U.S. Croquet Association, and the Croquet Clubs of the Carolinas. The local club includes two or three highly ranked members. “One nice thing about this game (is) men

Christmas Bird Count in Sun City By David W. Smith CONTRIBUTOR

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a seasonal ritual that evolved from a much less bird-friendly event 120 years ago. In the original tradition, known as the “Side Hunt,” competing teams were formed to see who could shoot the most birds on Christmas Day. Perhaps inspired by growing environmental awareness, Frank Chapman, an officer in the newly formed Audubon Society, proposed just counting the birds without shooting them first. The first count was held on Christmas Day 1900, in which 27 observers took part in 25 places in the United States and Canada – and 18,500 individual birds of 90 species were counted. Last year, more than 2,500 bird counts were held, with nearly 77,000 volunteers collecting data on millions of birds from North and South America. The count, held annually for the past

120 years, is the world’s longest running citizen science project. Audubon gathers the tallies from the various CBCs and shares those results with researchers, conservation biologists, land managers, and numerous organizations to study and help manage the long-term health and status of bird populations. This informs strategies to protect birds and

their habitat, and helps identify environmental issues with implications for people as well. Think “canary in the coal mine.” The Sun City Bird Club has been holding a CBC since 1999. Typically, 70 to 90 community members form teams to survey our three golf courses in the morning and neighborhoods in the afternoon, with most participating in one or the other.

All residents are welcome to participate; bird club membership is not required. Birding expertise is not required either, as teams need spotters and a recorder as well as a photographer and knowledgeable birder. This year’s count will be held Dec. 14. COVID-19 precautions, based on recommendations from Audubon, will be in place. Dale and Paula Smith have coordinated the Sun City event for six years and, while they’ve enjoyed doing it, they would like to share the fun and turn leadership over to another couple. Ideally, this couple would join the Smiths in organizing this year’s event. There has always been a social aspect to the count, with participants getting together to swap siting stories over coffee and snacks, but due to COVID-19, a group get-together seems unlikely this year. For more information, to join the count, or to volunteer as co-leaders, email pbsmith8558@gmail.com. David W. Smith is a member of the Sun City Bird Club.

Aging has its ups and downs, and downs, and downs By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR

This getting older is getting old! I’m beginning to feel like a vintage model of my former self. Have you noticed that it now takes three lunges forward to hoist your mass out of that favorite comfy chair? As I’ve replaced living room furniture, I now measure the height of each piece – to be assured that the in-coming products are taller than the out-going ones. I find that when we visit the kids, we can no longer lift ourselves up off their low, floor hugging furniture. On our last visit, I had to roll off the couch onto the floor and then stand up. Now, my knees have given out, so I’m incapable of getting up off the floor. Solution? I don’t visit that child any longer! My husband is carved up quarterly with little growths all over his forehead and the crown of his head. Poor man has a busy display of scars all over his face.

He looks like a Pit Bull that was used as a bait dog. I, on the other hand, had a dime-size growth removed off the tip of my nose. The skin graft was taken from my ear. Now if I can’t hear someone, I find I stick my nose up and ask, “What?” Last year, my husband was in rehab

recovering from a broken hip. I hired a young fellow to climb into our cluttered attic and bring everything down. I worried that if my aging hubby could lose his balance while closing the refrigerator door, the chance of his wobbly 82-year-old body taking a plunge from the attic was imminent. I spent the next five days going through his hoarded boxes of junk. I made six trips to the dump and five to Goodwill – and cleared out 55 years of clutter in under a week. I’ve paid more attention to commercials lately, too. Did you know that if you die from Mesothelioma (from breathing asbestos fumes), you could call a Savannah law firm and sue? Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I would assume that if I’m deceased, I am probably beyond help or

in need of any financial settlement. Many elderly folks suffer from depression. But fear not; there is a new anti-depressant on the market. However, you might want to pay attention to some of the side effects: Shortness of breath, confusion, weird dreams, diarrhea, anxiety, or death in the elderly, just to mention a few. Then there’s CV 1 Weight Gainer. You know how fragile some of the older generation become with age? This guarantees to help regain weight. One gal gained 50 pounds while using this product. Heck, I gained that much all by myself, with absolutely no help from any special product. Just call me. I can help you get fat for free – I seem to have the formula. I think before I reach my 80s, I would love to go bungee jumping or hang-gliding in the nude. Similar to President Bush, but with that one exception. What a ride that would be! Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.

Live The Seabrook Life

Before YOU SELL YOUR HOME!! now’s the time to take advantage of our special program! Here’s how it works:

• Select a villa and make a minimal deposit. • Pay the required Seabrook Membership Contribution before moving in.

• A move-in date is determined and you start

paying the resident monthly fee from the date you move in.

• When your home for sale closes, you make the real estate payment to the Seller or Entry Fee payment to The Seabrook.

Here’s what a few residents who took advantage of this special program had to say:

SEABROOK LIVING OPTIONS Option #1 Buy a Condominium

Option #2 Entry Fee Contract

You would purchase and own the property (deed and title), have equity in Hilton Head real estate and the ability to renovate your residence the way you want it to look. You can sell the property at any time.

Seabrook owns the condominium which is nicely upgraded and new residents pay an “Entry Fee” to occupy the property for as long as they like. Upon leaving, the resident receives a 50% refund of the Entry Fee paid to The Seabrook.

Our condo sold in February.” Alicia/Don— “We fell in love with a villa on the 5th floor with a great view. We moved in mid-March. Our Windmill Harbor home closed in August. Then we closed the Seabrook sale.”

Shirley— “I wanted a larger villa overlooking the lagoon. There was one available but I knew I had work to do before my home would sell. This plan helped me considerably. I’m now a full-time Seabrook resident.“

and women compete equally,” said member Jim Foley. The members agree that the game and shots are easily learned; however, the jump shot is done by more experienced members. Wright explained. “There is a one-eighthinch clearance on each side of the ball as it passes through the wicket. If a ball is ‘in the jaws,’ it’s stuck in the wicket.” In a really snazzy and impressive shot, Jim Podraza, one of Sun City’s highly ranked players and president of the Croquet Clubs of the Carolinas, executed a jump shot. His ball jumped over a ball stuck in the jaws. At 96, Dulcie Knoll, the club’s founder and legend is still playing. Knoll, an accomplished vocalist, poet and painter, and her late husband, Don, retired in 1981 to Port Royal Plantation, where they organized the first croquet club in Beaufort County. “My husband and I thought it might be an interesting sport,” Knoll said. “A croquet professional came to give us lessons and after a weekend, Don and I started teaching others to play.” In 1997, the couple came to look at Sun City Hilton Head, still in its early days. Knoll said their first question was whether there would be a place to play croquet. “They didn’t get it built until the next year,” Knoll said. They made the move, and “In 1998, we started giving clinics and the Sun City Croquet Club was established,” Knoll said. “I

still play, although not like I used to and not lately. I’m being careful because of the virus. “Croquet is a great game using strategy, like chess and billiards. A good strategist can often outplay a good shot-maker,” she said. “We invite everyone to come and play. I’ll do anything I can to promote the croquet club.” Club hours during the winter are 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays, and 1 p.m. Sundays, Wright said. “Residents can use the lawns when we aren’t having club hours,” he said. “If someone wants to know more about the game, or they want to use the lawns, they can contact me.” His email is dougwright7676@gmail. com and phone is 770-316-1199.
