WW II veterans honored at SCVA Veterans Day ceremony
PHOTOS BY TOM MILLS
A little rain didn’t stop the annual Veterans Day ceremonies from being held Nov. 11. The event was held at the pavilion, with socially distanced seating for attendees, including a number of WWII veterans.
By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
The sounds of “God Bless America” wafted across Town Square as the Sun City Veterans Association (SCVA) and the community joined to recognize Veterans Day during the 75th anniversary year of the end of World War II. The Nov. 11 observance was hosted by the SCVA, with Commander Tom BeGasse serving as master of ceremonies. Music by the Sun City Singers, directed by Nancy Laws, and accompanied by Debbie Ratliff, solemnified the occasion. Spectacular flourishes were provided by Ruben Ariola and Larry Hyatt, who are affiliated with Bugles Across America. BeGasse recognized veterans by branch of service during the Armed Forces Salute, when those in the audience stood as their service song was sung. Students from Red Cedar Elementary School in Bluffton had written personal
notes and assembled posters that were presented to each World War II veteran. The guest speaker was James Lamar, who served in the U.S. Navy as a flight officer. He accumulated 52 combat missions while deployed in the Persian Gulf. The invocation was given by Senior Chaplain Larry Della Vecchia, and the benediction was given by Associate Chaplain Lauren Evans. According to Jim Quirk, communications director, SCVA has about 1,000 members, including surviving spouses, with membership open to all Sun City residents who support the military and veterans. He said there are 18 World War II veterans in Sun City who are members of the Veterans Association. Some of those World War II veterans were present at the ceremony. They are all heroes who had difficult stories to relate, but they were more likely to want to share the light-hearted ones. Here are some of their stories.

Robert Lindstrom, U.S. Army 1943-45. Private First-Class, Company B, 319 Infantry, 80th Division, Patton’s Army. Received a Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge after being wounded Robert Lindstrom on the front lines in Luxembourg at the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945. Lindstrom’s 100th birthday was Nov. 5, 2020. He shipped out to Europe in December 1944, aboard the Queen Mary. When asked if the ship was fancy, he laughed. “We were the second to the last ones to get on the ship. We came up the ramp, put our gear over to the side, and that’s where we stayed for the whole trip. We slept on the deck. The food? You couldn’t eat it. It was British. It was bland.” After being wounded, Lindstrom went through aid stations and hospitals in France and England, ultimately arriving to a hospital in Cambridge, Ohio. When he was discharged, he came home to his wife and baby.
Lindstrom has three daughters who also live in Sun City. Russell Smith, U.S. Navy 194446. Graduated from U.S. Naval Academy as a commissioned officer. Served in the Combat Information Center (CIC) on the USS Massachusetts Russell Smith (BB59,) which was in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Smith was a flight director aboard the ship. In the days before U.S. airplanes had radar on board, he and his team would spot enemy planes and send U.S. planes to intercept them. It was hair-raising work, and so when they had leave, they were ready to kick their heels up. “When we put into Port Hueneme (west of Los Angeles), I found a note on the ship that said, ‘You’re going to land at Port Hueneme. Walk to the end of the pier and you’ll find a note.’ I did that and there was a note with a Model

What can we really do to help the environment? By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR
“Environment” is defined as the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. The vast majority of scientists believe that our environment is in serious trouble and that human activities are contributing to the problem. While many of the suggested solutions require worldwide governmental and corporate action, there are numerous things each of us can do to help. The following is by no means a complete list. Throughout there is common theme – “Use less!” Many of the suggestions will also save you money. • Drive less. Burning gasoline and oil pollutes our air and is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Tailpipe emissions pollute our roadways and end up being flushed into our groundwater. Walk more – it’s also healthier, as is biking. Carpool, once COVID-19 is under control.
Shop locally, plan and consolidate trips. Electric golf carts make a great second car for getting around Sun City • Change your thermostat by 2 degrees. Production of energy to heat and cool our homes is a leading contributor to the climate crisis. While a bigger shift on your thermostat would be better, 2 degrees will make a significant difference in energy consumption without being too disruptive to your
lifestyle. Lower it in cooler weather and increase it in warmer weather. Installing a programmable thermostat will also help, if you don’t yet have one. • Eat less meat and dairy. The agriculture industry consumes a significant portion of our nation’s energy. Producing animal products uses 10 times more energy and water than producing plant products. Reduce meat portions. To start, try Meatless Mondays. • Save your trees. Trees are critically important in absorbing carbon from the air. Many Sun City residents, concerned about root damage, want to cut them down. There are ways of controlling roots. Visit
suncitybirdclub.org for information. Trees shade your home (reducing cooling costs in summer) and reduce wind damage. • Plant native plants. Plants absorb carbon too. Native plants, once established, don’t require water, fertilizer, or insecticides. Like trees, they support wildlife. • Energy Star. Household appliances don’t last forever. When the time comes to replace yours, visit the EPA’s Energy Star website for advice on choosing replacements. • Practice and support the 4Rs. Reduce, Reuse, Replace, Recycle. Dealing with solid waste is an ever-increasing problem worldwide. Landfills are being overwhelmed. We all remember the toxic smoke over Sun City from last year’s trash fire in Ridgeland. Most landfills emit methane, a major contributor to the climate crisis. The Environmental Action Group’s 4Rs Team will soon be disseminating information on these topics. David W. Smith is a member of the Sun City Bird Club.

Thanksgiving cooking brings out best worst in home cooks By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR
It was never a secret that I’m not in love with the kitchen-room of my home. As far as I’m concerned, the perfect house would come with a butler’s pantry – and with the butler who would serve me every meal. In my defense, my own mother never took the time to teach me how to cook. Both she and my grandmother were fantastic in a kitchen. But those skills skipped a generation. The first time I cooked for my fiancé was a test run. Mother had left me at home with a box cake to bake; potatoes to slice, dice and mash; and a steak to broil. Seems simple enough, right? My first mistake was placing the mixture of a two-layer cake into one cake pan. It didn’t take long before the liquid mix was oozing all over the oven, smoking as it overflowed. I grabbed a knife and another pan and scraped off cake mix until it was even with the baking dish. Mother had another stove in the basement, so I dashed downstairs with the remains of this mixture and plopped it into a second oven to finish baking. Even as I did this, I was laughing to myself as I thought this resembled a scene in an “I Love Lucy” episode. The mashed potatoes came out as lumps with far too much milk. It was more like potato soup. And the tablespoon of salt that I added could make your lips pucker up like you were sucking a lemon. The finale was the broiled steak. Except that it was charbroiled like leather sandals. It was gross. But I have to commend my then-fiancé, as he ate it all and never complained. Once we married, I prepared many more disasters that were supposed to resemble meals. Five years into my love affair with the kitchen, I thought I was ready for the big time and moved

the stuck-on bag off Mr. Bird, I was horrified to see that what I expected to be a golden turkey was, in fact, a white-skinned fowl. I stood there dumbfounded, not realizing the problem until my husband was kind enough to read the directions to me – off the turkey’s chest. I had neglected to take the plastic wrapper off the bird, so the directions were melted onto the turkey breast. To add to this wonderful holiday meal, the sweet potatoes were somewhat burnt. The pumpkin pie we could suck through a straw. And the rolls were like small black bricks. But the salad was good. To all of you apprehensive about serving a Thanksgiving dinner this season, please note there is no shame in ordering the whole meal from Publix. That’s what I’m doing! on to Thanksgiving. I invited my mother-in-law over for the holiday. My parents had always cooked their turkey in a brown paper bag, sealed up and stapled closed. I was so proud of myself when I slid that bird into the oven! We were in the process of having a house built, so, while the turkey cooked, we drove my mother-in-law over to our new subdivision to show her the model home: Our big, stately Georgian Colonial with four massive pillars. Upon returning home, I was surprised that the aroma of turkey didn’t meet my nostrils upon entering the house. I opened the oven and sliced open the cooking bag. I was sure the bird would be golden brown and juicy. As I tried to pull the brown bag away from the bird, I realized it was sticking to the outer layer. I’m sure a look of confusion flashed across my face. The problem was, mother never told me to grease the interior of the bag. Once hubby and I were able to peel

Tomorrow By Dulcie Knoll When war is over, over there And fighting men come home. When gone is every trial and care That goes with feet that roam. When over there, the job is done And all are back to stay. When men put down each sword and gun That chased the strife away –

When Hitler, Tojo, all the rest Have been knocked down and good; When all our men have done their best On grounds where they have stood; Then they’ll come back to what they left; To everything they love. They’ll find this land of greed bereft And blessed by God above. If we can say we’ve done our best To keep the home fires bright, Then not one man will think of rest ’Tis all the world sits right. On the way, the ship changed course. MacArthur did what he did, so we (didn’t have to go to the Philippines and) headed for New York. We went up the Hudson River, and everyone on the ship ran to one side. We all wanted to see the Statue of Liberty. The captain came on the loudspeaker and told us to get back over to balance out the ship!” Hollis lives in Sun City with his wife, Mary. Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.
