T h e Seabr o ok Asks, Wh a t A re You Wa i t ing For?
The New Year is just around the corner. One year older — one year wiser; let’s put all the cards on the table, and
listen to our inner voice (and “hints” from concerned children) as to the best approach to thrive in our senior years. “Denial” is a powerful emotion. No one wants to admit they’re getting older or “can’t do this or that”. If the New Year makes you wiser, be realistic in your overall health assessment and put yourself in a safe place. Senior living 50+ years ago was one-dimensional. There were no “Assisted Living” communities and no CCRC’s (Continuing Care Retirement Communities). The elderly lived with one of their children or they went to a “nursing home,” which was commonly underfunded and quite depressing. Today’s CCRC changes the whole dynamic of senior retirement. The difference is residents now reside in one or two bedroom villas, enjoy amenities, group activities, transportation, excellent food and access to health care.

Sun City lagoons offer plenty of sport for resident fishers By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
A squirmin’ lizard or a flick ’n’ shimmy two-colored worm? Should you use a 1/16-ounce weight, or none at all? Does the barometric pressure matter … or doesn’t it? The participants in Sun City’s Quarterly Fishing Tournament are enthusiastic and curious. There are as many opinions as there are people fishing, but they all echoed what resident Larry Hundertmark said: “It’s amazing these water-retention ponds support this population of fish.” Fishing is the perfect sport to enjoy during the pandemic. “It’s a natural activity,” said Sun City Fishing and Hunting Club president Bob Vodzack. “Basically, people fish alone, and travel alone to go fishing.” The number of real experts fishing in Sun City lagoons is staggering, and they are actually catching trophy fish! ing to a club newsletter, the longest entries for a recent freshwater fishing tournament were: bass – 23 inches, crappie – 15.5 inches, catfish – 26 inches, and sunfish – 10.0 inches. The 400-plus-member club promotes good fellowship, enhances knowledge and enjoyment of fish and game activities, and follows sound environmental practices. Most members fish, although a handful are hunters, Vodzack said. The club hosts freshwater and saltwater tournaments, as well as crabbing and shrimping educational events, clam digs, charter fishing trips, fly-fishing events, hunting events, guest speakers and food events. Almost all events come with cash prizes or gift cards. A map on the club’s website shows which of the 250 lagoons in Sun City allow public access. The health of the lagoons is maintained by a private company, Estate Management, which is

FISHING from page 6SC hired by Sun City Hilton Head Community Association to manage the lagoons. According to Jeff Dembiec, chair of the club’s Lagoon Committee, the lagoons are maintained at a specified water quality because the water gets discharged into the local wetlands and rivers. “The fishing club works collaboratively with Sun City management and Estate Management to decide what kind of fish would be good to stock, he said. “Estate Management has relationships with a variety of hatcheries, and depending on the kind of fish we need, they arrange for an aerated truck to bring them to us once or twice a year. The fish are not just for us to catch. It’s a circle of life thing. The habitat of the lagoons is maintained, and the cormorants and egrets get to eat too.” Andy Dvorscak said he fished a lot as a child, “but there was a career and kids, so I didn’t have time. When I retired, I dusted off my stuff and started fishing again. (In the fishing tournaments,) they pair people by skill level, and then we fish together.”
Dvorscak fishes without weights. “Just let the worm sink gradually to the bottom. Then you animate the worm – twitch it,” he said. “I try to measure the fish as quickly as I can. They shouldn’t be out of water long. Like all fishermen, I try to do it (take the hook out) as quickly as I can.” On a different day at a different lagoon, Lou Coccodrilli said much the same thing: “I take the hooks out safely so the fish are not harmed.” It is a challenge to fish on demand. Ben True painted himself as someone who has little experience, although he spent 20 years as a charter fishing boat captain out of Waukegan, Ill. “I can talk all about catching salmon and trout in Lake Michigan, but these bass have me stumped.” Bill Rogers arrived at the lagoon carrying five or six fishing rods with different lures and riggings. He explained that it is easier to just grab another rod when needed, rather than having to redo the rigging. Rogers said that when his wife asked why he needed so many fishing rods, he asked her, “Why do you need so many purses?”

It would be hard to find a greater group of people. Sun City has spawned a Fishing and Hunting Club that would rival any for fun and enthusiastic members. The club usually meets on the first Monday in each month. In these pandemic times, be sure to verify dates and times, on the club website: suncityhiltonhead. org/GroupPage/46134~2577, or call Bob Vodzack at 410-231-9024. Membership is opened to all Sun City residents. Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

(Sort of) fond memories of family Christmas with little ones By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR
Do the super moms of the world remember all the tasks we accomplished in preparation for Christmas? Weeks of shopping for those special gifts we thought the children would love. Hours wandering around the mall trying to think of something unique for our parents who had everything. And in the end, buying them a velour sweatsuit out of frustration and a yearning just to finish the list? Long Christmas dresses, complete with pinafore, were sewn for my girls. I even made matching bonnets. One year I made a navy blue velvet suit for our son. I can well remember getting up one December morning, bathing and dressing all three children. One daughter’s hair was blown and set in curls while the other girl was braided. They were dressed in their long party dresses, our son in his blue velvet suit. Off we went to the local mall to see Santa and have their pictures taken. The line stretched from one end of the mall to the other, but the children were so excited to see the rosy-cheeked bearded man in the red Christmas suit. After nearly two hours in line, it was their turn to climb on Santa’s lap. No sooner had the girls been picked up than the tears began. Little cheeks turned bright red with veins popping out in their foreheads. Snot was running profusely from their button noses. Both girls thrashed around, kicking Santa in an attempt to escape his clutches. Hair fell out of braids and bonnets were askew. Two hysterical, sweaty toddlers broke free of the fat man, running off screaming. Our son? He sat there in his little blue suit, told Santa what he wanted for Christmas and had his picture taken – with a big smile on his face. Every year, hours were spent decorating the tree to perfection just to make
sure every single piece of tinsel hung in its proper place. Hubby strung the exterior lights in the bitter cold. Cookies were made and gifts were wrapped and set under the tree. Each child had a specific color wrapping paper for easy identification. We took our time unwrapping, each taking a turn. Kids squealed with excitement, yet within hours the box that housed the new puzzle was smashed and destroyed. Toys were broken quickly and tears began to flow while little ones threw temper tantrums because of their own destruction and lack of naps. Once they became teens I found out that they slit the tape on their gifts under the tree to see what they got ahead of time. Then they’d re-tape them … and on Christmas Day, they would act surprised. Daughter No. 2 would sigh and huff, asking me why I bought an emerald green outfit to go with her gorgeous red hair. Didn’t I know she hated green? Only Goth girl was pleased that that year, receiving a single Michael Jackson glitter glove. Today? I write checks and send them out to the adult darlings. No more returning gifts, no more disappointment on their faces, and no more tears … from me. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.

Join in the challenge to make neighborhoods earth friendly
HEY SUN CITY!
By David W. Smith CONTRIBUTOR
Recycling conserves natural resources, creates new jobs, and protects our environment for current and future generations. By decreasing our waste output and reusing our materials, we can save money, reduce pollution and conserve energy. Sun City’s newest registered group, the Environmental Action Group, is working to promote recycling in our community. The Group’s 4Rs Team promotes a Reduce, Replace, Reuse, Recycle lifestyle for ourselves and our community through education and activities. The team believes that there are many Sun City households that are not recycling, and plans to educate and encourage neighbors to help neighbors become better stewards of our environment. The team recently made a presentation to our NRC announcing an upcoming Neighborhood Challenge Contest to encourage greater recycling awareness and participation. If your rep hasn’t passed along the presentation, you might request it. The contest will be based on the percentage of increase in the number of recycling bins placed out in each neighborhood, comparing the week of Feb. 1 to the week of April 22 (Earth Day). Volunteers are being sought to captain the neighborhood efforts in coordination with the 4Rs Team. Captains will be responsible for sharing contest and recycling information and managing neighborhood counts. Helpers are needed to assist neighbors who cannot carry their recycling bins to the curb and to promote the purchase of SCHH Woodworkers’ wheeled Recycle Bin Buddies ($35) to help people who cannot carry their bins. The team will need volunteers to serve as drop-off locations for foam egg cartons, plastic bags, plastic wrappers

and film, which can be taken to the green bins at grocery and retail stores. Another way to help neighbors will be by taking their green waste to the SCHH Red Dam Road mulching center. A significant amount of potentially recyclable material ends up being rejected as contaminated. Cardboard must be flattened, clean (no oily pizza boxes) and dry. Wet cardboard and paper will be sent to the landfill. Beverage containers should be emptied and rinsed. All food residue must be washed from food containers. Plastic bags cause many problems in the recycling process, so don’t put them in your bin. Placing non-recyclable items in your bin can contaminate the whole thing. Email environmentalactiongroupschh@gmail.com for a list of acceptable recycling items for curbside pickup, request a printable Recycling Guide from Recycling (beaufortcountysc.gov), or check the list acceptable items from the Jasper County Solid Waste and Recycling Center. Visit jaspercountysc. gov/departments, click on Engineering, then Solid Waste and Recycling. David W. Smith is a member of the Sun City Bird Club.
