Woodstock attendees share memories from epic 1969 music event
By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
Massive crowds, iconic music, relentless rain, and epic immobilizing mud describes the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, held Aug. 15-18, 1969, on the Max Yasgur dairy farm in Bethel, New York.
More than 30 music groups performed, and crowd estimates ranged from 400,000 to one million.
Among them were five young people, strangers at the time, who are now Sun City residents. They recently gathered for a Woodstock party, to share memories of the three historic days of soaring music and supportive community.
Jay Dorin and his wife, Lisa Henderling, Woodstock party hosts, were the source of endless stories. Dorin, a music aficionado and student of culture, grew up in Washington Heights, New York, and started going to the town of Woodstock in 1965. Many concerts were held there.
“The musicians there were unbelievable,” Dorin said. “It was an artists’ community.”
When they heard about the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Dorin and his friends knew they would go. He described what he called the one good decision of his life.
“I rented a tent on wheels (to pull behind the car). It had a wooden floor and slept six people,” he said. “We got there a day early. There were heavy rains – Biblical – but not a drop got into our tent.”
One of Dorin’s stories exemplified the ambience that was Woodstock. “I blew out my flip flops on Day One. I had a pair of back-up sneakers. I stepped into quicksand. My socks and sneakers were sucked off my feet as I was getting pulled out of the calf-deep mud,” Dorin recalled.
“I walked down the road barefooted and encountered the sandal maker. This was a stroke of fate, heaven sent. Within hours I

WHAT IS RESTORATIVE MEDICINE?
Restorative medicine involves using Human Cellular Tissue Products (HCTPs) to help the body heal itself. Through restorative medicine, damaged tissue in joints are supplemented with healthy structural tissue to provide an opportunity to restore from within.
KNEES, SHOULDERS, AND HIPS
Dr. Heather Hinshelwood MD has helped thousands of patients with knees, shoulders, hips and more. The procedure takes only 30 minutes and allows the patient to leave with a simple band-aid over the site.
RESULTS ORIENTED
Many patients experience a significant reduction in knee pain within 48 hours due to the reduced inflammation. With restorative medicine therapy, most patients feel maximum results within 10 to 12 weeks and up to 95% within 6 months.
Dec. 20, 2022 Page 5SC Over one million joint replacements are performed in the U.S. each year and according to the Cleveland Clinic, over 85% of knee replacements need to be redone within 15 years. Since 2018 the Fraum Center for Restorative Health has been one of the only facilities in the United States, offering a non-surgical alternative to joint replacement that is Beyond Stem Cells™. One party guest, Ken Jones, lived in California and hitch-hiked to New York. He was from Queens, where his father was an apartment building superintendent. “In those days, building basements were outfitted for a nuclear attack,” Jones said. “We always had tins of survival biscuits, which were dense, full of nutrition, and would immediately dry out your mouth.”
Jones took some of that stash along on his trip to Woodstock. “All I had was a tin of survival biscuits – and a jug of wine,” he said. “We were ill-prepared. We were there all three days and slept under trucks for cover.”
To celebrate this 2022 Sun City gathering, Jones wrote and performed a well-crafted song. It reflected the unique and captivating aspects of Woodstock.
Stan Lituchy, an Albany, New York, native, said he arrived at Woodstock a day late, driving his mom’s Dodge station wagon: “We stopped along the way to see ‘I am Curious (Yellow).’”
Lituchy disputed the notion that Woodstock was all about drugs. “There were people selling acid but none of us did any drugs,” he said. “There was a reputation that this was a big drug deal, but it wasn’t.”
Along with the rest, Lituchy reflected on the spectacular musicians present.
“I remember the wonderful musicians: Mountain, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, Credence Clearwater Revival.”
Lituchy, who is an accomplished photographer revealed, “I do have some racy photos.”
Each person’s Woodstock story is different, but they all include a love of the music, and details of their journey to get there.
New Jersey-born Margaret Downs was a student at St. Leo’s College in Florida, and the daughter of a strict Englishman. “We heard about it in the spring,” she said. “I had a little yellow VW bug. My friend brought her pillow and makeup. We convinced her to leave those in the car, which
we left by the side of the road to walk the final way to the grounds.”
When they got to the site, she said, “We went straight to the stage, so we were right by the music. We had no shelter, and it was either raining or the sun was beating down. The Red Cross was giving out bottles of grape juice. Everyone got a sip, but I was so sunburned and dehydrated they gave me my own bottle.
“On my way home, I telephoned. My brother told me I was in big trouble. ‘Mom and Dad are watching the news, and you’re getting grounded.’”
Parents certainly had opinions, and not all Dorin’s party attendees made it to Woodstock. Amy Keane and her boyfriend from Green Bay Wisconsin had their car packed with Coke and potato chips, but her mom wouldn’t let her go. “I was very disappointed,” Keane said. “I thought she prevented me from participating in an historic event.”
Marilyn Bernstein’s parents were different: “They told me, ‘We don’t care if you
go. Just don’t bring home a hippie.’
“I was 18 years old. Our car broke down en route, and we left our gear. We got a ride from some people driving a used hearse. I got separated from my friends and wound up spending the weekend with this guy from Tennessee.
“I had never even camped out – let alone in the mud with no tent or sleeping bag, but the music was wonderful! When I saw a copy of the New York Daily News on Sunday morning with an aerial shot of the 500,000 people, I decided to head for home because I was sure my parents were upset and worried.”
Bernstein summed up the Woodstock experience for the group.
“A few years ago, I got to go back,” she said. “Seeing the field with its big peace sign just made the hair on my arms stand up. Once again, I appreciated being part of something very special.”
