Travel club encourages residents to stay ‘on the go’

Sandy Paine writes a check to sign up for an upcoming trip with the On the Go Travel Club.

By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

“I guess we’re going somewhere!” said Martin Kelinsky as he perused information on upcoming trips with the Sun City On the Go Travel Club and the club’s very active special interest group WEGO (WhatEver’s Going On.) WEGO concentrates on local events, and the larger travel club focuses on longer trips. Kelinsky, a newcomer to the group, has not yet participated, “But I want to hear what’s happening.” Mary Turner agrees. “I want to be able to travel and enjoy the wonderful events in the area,” she said. “I am hoping to do more … it’s great that someone puts this all together!” On the Go Travel Club was chartered early in January 1999, but WEGO came first, according to its founder, Barbara O’Connor. O’Connor, who maintains incredible enthusiasm for the club and her quest to share with Sun City residents the flavor of the Lowcountry, loves relating the story of

WEGO’s beginnings in April 1998. “We weren’t allowed to meet in Pinckney Hall because we weren’t a chartered club,” she said, “so for the first 38 weeks, we met at Lake Somerset. Everyone brought chairs.” O’Connor has extensive and meticulous records, and still retains original sheets that participants made as they listened to her describe upcoming trips. “I would read a trip description, and people would write down the ones they wanted to go to,” she said. “Sometimes I’d stand on a picnic table, so everyone could hear me. We didn’t use sign-up sheets because the wind would blow them away.” O’Connor would read from a master sheet and take notes regarding who wanted to participate. In January 1999, when the On the Go Travel Club was chartered, WEGO was finally allowed to meet in Pinckney. “We needed a double room, and 12 tables for 40 sign-up sheets,” O’Connor said. One of O’Connor’s favorite aspects of

Sun City Veterans Association Commander Tom BeGasse, left, turned over command of the organization to Vice Commander Dave Davis in a ceremony Dec. 13. Davis, who has completed two years of service to the SCVA assumed responsibility for the 900-member group immediately. the early days were what she called the ORGEES, so named because they were unrestrained indulgences in local culture and events. These were events where “rovers” (Sun City participants) went on trips that took 14 hours or more with at least 10 events. “We’d hop from one event to the other. An ORGEE had to include at least one ice cream shop and one happy hour,” O’Connor said. “If you couldn’t last 14 hours, you couldn’t be a rover.” At the meeting following an ORGEE, O’Connor would ceremoniously award those who participated with a survivor badge. People loved accumulating badges. “I would love to do it all again if I had the time,” she said. O’Connor said she retired from leading WEGO in 2013 so she could clean her garage. But she hasn’t done it yet! To this day WEGO continues to be vibrant. Their December 2021 10-page local event-filled calendar is divided into five groups: Classical Events, Festivals and Home Tours, Music and Theater, More Adventures, and Museums and Tours. Joan Morris, the mastermind behind the extensive and invaluable list, gives an update at the meetings. Along with personal comments, Morris gives hints like whether venues are accessible for people who use walkers or canes, and when a participant should bring a snack or lawn chair. When speaking about compiling the monthly single-spaced list, she said, “It’s been my pleasure. For the first two weeks of the month, I’m very busy, then I take a little rest.” Outgoing On the Go Travel club president Sherry Conrad wrote in a recent travel club

newsletter, “It’s not too early to begin your planning for 2023 travel now as many trips have lower costs and good space availability. Additionally, many travel operators have adopted very flexible policies with regard to change and cancellations. By booking now, we are supporting the travel industry and letting them know we want to travel.” Dianne Brooks, one of the travel club’s three trip managers, referred to COVID challenges when she said, “Just when we think we’re out of the woods, something happens. We’ll have more short trips close by. Most of our trips for now will be in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. We want Sun City residents to come to us to suggest trips. We want feedback!” The travel club’s general meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 2 p.m. at Hidden Cypress. WEGO meetings are on the third Wednesday at Pinckney in the May River Room, with sign-up for events starting at 9:30 a.m. To join, visit SunCityHiltonHead.org, under Clubs and Groups/General Interest/ On the Go Travel Club. Click on the 2022 Membership Application. Membership fee is $5 per year. On the Go Travel Club and WEGO provide phenomenal opportunities to explore and learn, and encourage residents to go, try or do something new. “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten,” O’Connor said. “Don’t be afraid to try something new. That initial feeling of fear is only your inner energy helping you to do your best in a new situation.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.
