This Generation Has Passed Me By BY CHRIS ROOSA Contributor I grew up in an era when life was simple. Our rotary dial phone was shared with a party line. We had a selection of three channels on our 12” television screen. Nighttime entertainment consisted of Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger or Jackie Gleason. Friday nights were often spent at the roller-skating rink listening to that awful organ music as we repeatedly circled the floor. Saturday afternoons we’d walk over three miles to the movie theater to enjoy cartoons and a double feature. To the thrill of our parents, they could send us off with twenty-five cents, plus a nickel for snacks, so they could have some
time to themselves. Our brains became a mathematical wiz as we became proficient in addition, subtraction and the times tables. Spelling bees taught us how to ace the English language. Time off from school was spent outside with friends engaging in hopscotch, jax, biking or jumping rope. Wax lips and candy cigarettes put a smile on our young faces. It was a time of simplicity, days of innocence. Neighbors enjoying the company of neighbors, children learning to share with other children. We learned how to entertain ourselves with crayons or we took time to relax

Give Your Brain Some Exercise With This Real Estate Rebus BY LARRY STOLLER Contributor It is very important to exercise the brain! My wife, who is a licensed psychologist, made it very clear to me how important it was to keep my brain active. Learning new things, playing games, Larry Stoller resolving problems, working, and/or other mental exercises help keep the brain healthier longer. The first thing that came to my mind was playing poker with the guys. So maybe I need to play more poker. But very quickly, I came to realize that for me there were other activities that were good for the brain and very gratifying as well.
These activities included making real estate websites, property videos, and developing innovative marketing and advertising campaigns for the homes that I list and sell. Therefore, in the spirit of keeping our brains healthy, here’s a real estate REBUS with words that are related to real estate. Can you guess what each word or phrase is without looking at the answers below? I hope that you enjoy this word puzzle … and here’s to your healthy brain! Sun City Residents’ Votes Count At Creative Vision Event BY JOSEPH TURINO Contributor This year’s Sun City Creative Vision exhibit and competition had 2,740 visitors who cast ballots on their favorite photo, artwork, and stained-glass entries on display for three days in Pinckney Hall. It marked the 11th year for the popular event that is open to all Sun City residents. It is a collaborative effort of the Sun City Photography Club, All About Art Club, and Glass Crafters Club. There were sixty photos, fifty-five art creations, and five stained glass entries on display February 2nd through fourth. The Photography Club’s sixty photos were randomly paired with fifty-five artists in the All About Art Club and with five stained glass artists from the Glass Crafters Club. Both artists and glass crafters were encouraged to provide their own creative interpretation of the paired photograph. So not all artwork and glass art are dupli-

an opportunity to purchase a framed photo, framed piece of artwork, or favorite stained-glass piece. Not all entries were for sale, but those purchased were picked up after the show’s closing. Winners of the competition were announced after the close of the event and after all the ballots were counted by hand. First place ribbons for Favorite Pairings were awarded to All About Art member Teresa Brandt and Photography Club member Corky Burt for their entry titled “Serenity at Port Royal.” Favorite Glass 1st place ribbons went to Mary LiVecchi’s “Great Escape.” Favorite photography first place winner was Doug Scott’s “Nevada Northern 81.” First place winner for Favorite Artwork went to Barb O’Neill for “Dinghy Dock.” Additional winners in Favorite Pairing included second place to artist Janet Urbanic and photographer Jay Dorin for “Grandpa Woodstock,” and third place
winners were artist Lynne Drake and photographer Diane Brayden for “Icelandic Fisherman.” Other ribbons awarded in Favorite Photography were second place winner was Steve Tate’s “Forest King,” and third place winner Tom Mills for “Iris: Goddess of the Rainbow.” Other winners for Favorite Artwork included second place award to Carol Dombrowski’s “Hey! Who Are You?” and third place went to Jane Capraro for “Reflection.” There was only one first place ribbon awarded in the Favorite Glass category since there were only five entries. Stan Holz, president of the Photography Club, said it takes eight to nine months of and it is truly a collaborative effort by all three clubs. Creative Vision had 16 committee chairs and countless volunteers from each club. He added, “Everything went like clockwork. It was a tremendous success.”

Brodie the Basset Tells All BY ANDREA HOERNER Contributor This was the scoop of a lifetime- an interview with Brodie the Bassett Hound! As you may already know, Brodie went missing and was gone 13 days before returning home! As we sat on a Sun City patio, Brodie patiently answered questions about his adventure. How did this all begin? B. My human was working in the yard and a gust of wind blew open our back door. I ran out to see what was going on. Then he yelled, which scared me and I ran to hide. Did you realize so many folks were looking for you? B: During the day, I saw people everywhere, but mostly I moved around at night – when everyone in Sun City was fast asleep! What did you think of the traps? B: They were disgusting. Smelled of cat food and sardines which were put there to attract me. But I prefer steak, peanut butter, bacon, chicken – in that order.
B: Well, kind Sun City residents leave out food for the feral cats. And I ate a lot of birdseed and poop. Not the best tasting stuff, but I had to survive. I heard you tasted bunny? B: I refuse to comment on that! Just because it was I my mouth, doesn’t mean I ATE it. Were you frightened by the storm? B: Oh, my yes! I’m rather high strung and just the sound of thunder sends shivers down my spine! I understand Minnie was brought out to lure you into the trap? B: Boy oh boy! I’m a good looking five year old Bassett Hadn’t seen such a pretty face in days. That and the steak, I just couldn’t resist. Were you glad to get home? B: I was never so happy to see my humans and my bros Jack and Bruno. They were worried sick about me and missed me terribly. We are a team! What was the first meal you asked for? B: Boneless chicken breast, sauteed in white wine and well seasoned.
Any lessons for other dogs out there? B: For Pete’s sake, Stay home! And trust your humans! Kristie & Skip Cochran, Brodie’s humans, live in Lawton Station. “In a sense it was good he was in Sun City. Residents there are active and out and about and were a great help in spotting Brodie.” said Skip. Emily Peleaz, a neighbor of the Cochrans, was invaluable in planning how to find Brodie. She explained: “The Cochrans did the right thing in getting the word out along with his photos.” Kristie went on to say: “The Sun City Securitas officers were a big help. And golf course personnel alerted their employees, who are out on the courses very early, to be on the lookout for Brodie.” The Cochrans want to express their sincere appreciation to all the folks who were patient and helped in the rescue of Brodie. “This was a great example of a community coming together to accomplish something good,” said Kristie.
But weren’t you hungry?
LEARNING FROM PAGE 6SCS classes, and opportunities for field trips and tours. “They are well organized, very welcoming and make everyone comfortable,” Lepley said. “I feel I have grown so much and am learning about things I would never have been interested in before.” Another exciting community asset is the Lowcountry Community Concert Band. OLLI supports the band through administrative tasks, marketing, practice space and development. The Lowcountry Community Concert Band is an ambassador of “wind band” music, holding four free area
concerts a year. “Our concerts are enjoyable, and it’s our mission to present them through an educational lens,” stated David Carbone. He added “It has been an honor to serve as the ensemble’s Artistic Director and principal conductor, now for the sixth year out of the ensemble’s eleven-year history.” OLLI’s mission is to create and sustain a robust and thriving lifelong learning community for adults through intellectual and social programs. There are OLLI programs on 125 college or university campuses
from Maine to Hawaii to Alaska. OLLI is volunteer-driven. Instructors are a dedicated group willing to share their expertise and time with members. Curriculum teams, office support and community ambassadors are all volunteers. OLLI is self-sufficient with an endowment from the Osher Foundation, while USCB provides space for office and classes. How did all this start? Marge Yanker founded the Creative Retirement Center in 1991 which was the beginning of lifelong learning programs for older adults at USCB. Renamed The Learning Exchange in 1993, membership was about 750 when the Osher
Foundation came calling in 2004 to offer financial support in the form of an endowment. And who is the “Osher” behind all this? Bernard Osher is a respected businessman and community leader who is 97 years old and lives in California. He started the Osher Foundation in 1977, which seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. An enthusiastic group of Sun City residents attended the annual Sun City Day of Dancing, Singing and Giving that was held November 28 from 2-4 pm at the Pavillion. The Bluffton Self Help benefited from event donations of non-perishable food and cash. Participants enjoyed singing by the Carolina Girls and watching the Sun City Dance Clubs perform. GFWC Woman’s League of the lowcountry sold refreshments for donations to the Doors to Freedom, the only residential safe house in South Carolina that saves young girls from human trafficking.
GENERATION FROM PAGE 2SCS and enjoy a good book. Today I live in the hectic world of electronics that I can’t operate because I’m mechanically challenged. The ever changing Windows system baffles me to the point that I want to throw my computer out the window. Cells phones? I have reverted back to the flip phone and I am still dumbfounded. The other day I couldn’t figure out how to get “an outside line”. My daughter, who lives in Michigan, was programmed into my contacts. I finally tapped on her number, told her to call the party I wanted and tell them to call me back. When I go a couple of months without using my cell then I can’t
even remember how to turn it on. If I click the wrong key of my television remote the only way I know how to possibly fix it is to click the Back button or turn the TV off, then back on, hoping that will restore my entertainment. A friend doesn’t know how to pull up Netflix so she has the living room television set to regular channels. The bedroom TV is programmed for Netflix only. Makes sense! I’ve come to believe that half the cars, on the road, in S. Carolina were manufactured without turn signals. Seven times, yesterday, I sat waiting to turn and didn’t know if the car ahead of me was going left, right or center. How much effort does
it take to use a turn signal? Last week I was waiting at the front gate to Sun City. There’s a relatively noticeable sign that reads to stay BEHIND THIS LINE until the gate returns to the down position before proceeding. Of course the gentleman, in front of me, thought he could rush forward and squeeze through before the gate arm came down. Wrong! Down it came and it stayed down. I couldn’t back up because I had a line of vehicles behind me. My daughter remarked, “What’s his big rush? To get home to Ben Gay and tapioca pudding?” Are we at a point in life that we no longer can even follow simple instructions in this busy, fast paced world? I admit, this era has passed me by. I
find I can no longer keep up with the times. Some place there ought to be a paradise were the elderly can revert back to rotary phones, hand held can openers, a land free of computers, motoms, internet or cable. An island where people once again converse with others, using their mouths, not their fingers. A utopia where an actual person answers the phone at a business and you don’t have to press one to speak English in America. A destination were we once again take time to enjoy the simple things in life and one another. Where there’s no longer a rush home to tapioca pudding and Ben Gay!

Amateur Radio Club Winter Field Day A Success BY JOSPEH TURINO Contributor Sun City Hilton Head Amateur Radio Club’s Winter Field Day was “absolutely a great success,” according to its President Harve Hnatiuk, who added, “We had a great turnout of members and a lot of guests” at the event which was held at Sun City’s Lake Somerset grounds. The Amateur Radio Club has over 50 members, and over a quarter of the members took part. “We made contacts in about 35 different states plus three provinces of Canada.” Hnatiuk explained, “The event is a way for our members to practice setting up and operating portable temporary radio communications systems that use off-the-grid electrical power sources. Member Bob Officer was there to assure a supply of solar power for the field day at which the club had four stations on the air simultaneously. The amateur radio operators could be used by a community such as Sun City, or an area or region outside Sun City during an emergency when normal communications are not available.” For residents of Sun City, it could also be used to reach family when all communications are down to let them know they are okay or to

He said, “While you are required to take a test to get a license, operators are no longer required to know Morse Code.” Hnatiuk was sending messages with Morse Code at the event as he was licensed back in 1960 when the Morse Code was still a requirement and says his messages average 22-23 words per minute. It takes time to build a relationship with Mooney, but once he loves you, it’s one of the best feelings in the world! Mr. Mooney has been working with PAL’s dog behaviorist to learn to overcome his diva tendencies and become the best version of himself. After reflecting on his high maintenance ways, Mr. Mooney is ready learn and grow in a committed relationship with someone special. You should know up front that Mr. Mooney doesn’t do one-night stands. You’ll need to dedicate about 2-3 weeks to get to know him before he starts to let you in. PAL staff will work with potential suit-
ors to show them the ins and outs of having Mr. Mooney as a companion. Earning his love and affection may be a bit of a process, but once you do, he’ll let down his walls and show you the lapdog within. Underneath the rippling muscles, devilishly good looks, and bravado, Mr. Mooney is still that same puppy abandoned long ago. And at the end of the day, he just longs for what we all do, unconditional love and understanding.
