Congratulations!

Your times are in His hands! (Psalm 31:15)

The Book’d & Blessed Planner Kit is a faith-focused tool that was specially crafted to help you live victoriously by bringing your thoughts and attitudes into alignment with God’s word. God has good plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11) and nothing is impossible for you (Matthew 17: 20), and as you seek the kingdom of God, expect that everything else will follow! (Matthew 6:33)

To the Woman,

Congratulations on what could very easily be the most important decision you’ll make for 2025: the decision to take ownership of your life by taking ownership of your time. Taking ownership of your life begins with recognizing the value of time. Time isn't just a ticking clock; it's a silent partner in your quest for greatness. Time affords you the opportunity to cultivate resilience, embrace change, and evolve into the best version of yourself. Whether it's investing time into nurturing relationships, pursuing your passions, building streams and avenues for generational prosperity, or engaging in self-discovery, every choice contributes to the masterpiece of a beautiful life.

Our Book’d Planner Kits are designed to inspire purposeful actions, ensuring that each day becomes a step towards fulfilling the highest vision for your life. Life is a gallery of momentsstrung together haphazardly or curated with thought and intention- the choice is yours. Do you want to show up full of fears, doubts, and worries, or full of gratitude, compassion, and intentionality? Will your legacy be riddled with “if I had only” or will you be at ease, knowing that you made the decision to create a plan and see it through? Are you merely interested in a fulfilling, purposeful life, or are you committed to actually building one? Again, the choice is yours.

As you fill the pages with dreams, goals, and accomplishments, you're not just planning your days – you're building a legacy and imprinting the world with a stamp that no one else can duplicate. Who are you living to please, how do you define winning, and most importantly, who are you winning for?

Your Book’d Planner is more than just some pages bound together; it's a canvas for your dreams, a roadmap for your aspirations, and a companion on your journey to success. As you flip through its crisp pages for the first time, envision the endless possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. This planner is not just a collection of dates; it's a space for you to map out your dreams, set goals, and manifest your vision for an extraordinary year and an extraordinary life.

This year is yours to shape, and your Book’d Planner is the instrument that will guide you through the process. Embrace it with enthusiasm, knowing that each completed page is a leap towards the life you desire. Like a well-nurtured investment, each moment and ounce of energy invested adds to the exponential growth of success. It's the small, consistent actions that accumulate into a force that transcends expectations. Create a life that radiates with authenticity, love, and significance – a testament to the artistry of using time to its fullest potential.

As Toni Morrison said, “Your life is already artful- waiting, just waiting, for you to make it art.”

Our vision for you is a life that gets more beautiful with every passing year.

2025 VISION BOARD

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

2 Corinthians 5:17

As I prepared to enter this upcoming year, I knew my life needed radical change. The past year was bittersweet, engulfed with beautiful moments and then doused with loss and sorrow. I lost some very important people in my life and through my sorrow I yearned for my grandmother. I wanted so desperately to lay my head on her lap and cry as she strokes my head, as she had done many times before. My longing for unconditional love led me back to my roots and what has given the women of my family strength for generations: the love of God. It came to me as a whisper during a raging storm of life, marital trials, and my god mother’s diagnosis of cancer, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you: He shall never permit the righteous to be moved,” (Psalm 55:22). I did just that. I began to pray and attend church, yet I still felt lost and unsure of my plan.

January 5th, I was admitted to the hospital for an abnormal ECG. My T waves were inverted (T waves are the lines that normally point up on ECG but were pointing down). For the first time in a long time I admitted to being afraid. I had lost my godmother, my husband and I were separated, coupled with being head of household, my health, and embarking on a journey of self-transformation, my body did what my mind refused to do: it shut down, so I could rest. During my period of rest, I continued to pray for guidance. One Sunday morning my prayers were answered in a sermon. You see, in my mind, my transformation and my vision was to become unrecognizable from the person I once was; I wanted to become a new creature. That morning my pastor asked, “Do you want to change your life?” I emphatically answered, “Yes!”, like everyone else in the congregation. He said, “Turn to Matthew 6:33,” and the scripture read, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.” It resonated in me, not my way but His way and His righteousness. That week I did a true self-inspection of my life, I pulled everything out, I acknowledged my rights and repented for my wrongs. I took accountability and responsibility for my life and the choices I had made. I began my evolution, I started to grow, I started to change.

Although my work began on the inside, the first visuals of change came from my outward appearance. I modeled the path of my cousin Khadijah, who had been on a spiritual journey for two years. She changed everything about herself: the way she dressed, communicated, conducted herself and expressed love. It was inspiring to see her transformation; I could see His light shining within her and her example drew me closer to His word. Therefore, I began, I purged the items that represented the old me. I gave away my clothes and thrifted a new wardrobe. I monitored my thoughts and

guarded my heart by only allowing positive sources of information to enter my body. I changed my speech and conversations. I listened to uplifting and intentional music like Gospel, Christian, Classical and Jazz. I watched sermons, motivational messages and listened to audiobooks from Dr. Anita Phillips, Sarah Jakes Roberts and Priscilla Shirer. I increased my range by listening to and watching audiobooks and documentaries of strong black women such as Viola Davis, Nikki Giovanni, Bethann Hardison, and Toni Morrison. I spent more time with family and rekindled a beautiful relationship with my mother. Most importantly, I praised God and prayed daily despite what I was going through; He has and always will be worthy of my praise. I carried Proverbs 3:5-6 in my spirit, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” I did, I do and I always will. He has blessed my life, carried me in hard times, shielded me from danger, made a way through no way, gave me peace through troubled times, unspeakable joy in good times and unconditional love always. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs,

God’s been good to me, and the downs have been few, I would guess you can say, God has blessed me, But there’s never been a time in my life, he didn’t bring me through If anyone, should ever write my life story, for whatever reason, there might be. You will be there, between each line of pain and glory, Jesus is the best thing that happened to me.

You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened, Rev James Clevland

Questions

Prayer

Lord, Thank You, Thank you, Thank you, for the person reading this testimony of your grace and mercy. Lord, Thank you, for the reader and their embarkation on their journey. I ask that you begin a mighty work in their lives, call them to you, show them their purpose, and prepare them for their transformation. Lord, we know that living your will in this world is not easy, but Father we know that all things are possible if we have faith and trust in you with all our hearts. CHANGE OF ADDRESS: I DON’T LIVE THERE ANYMORE

“Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace,”

Luke 48-50 (also read verses 36-47)

One day I was preparing dinner (one of the few dishes I try to cook), and I was in a fairly good mood. Well, I take it that the enemy was none too happy because all the thoughts of my past sins began to flare up, and I began to feel bad. Thoughts began to race in my head, “You don’t deserve to be happy.” “Are you sure God forgave you?” And out the door went my happy mood. I then closed my eyes and quietly prayed, asking the Holy Spirit and God to talk to my spirit, silence those untrue and hurtful thoughts. And then this thought popped into my head, “I don’t live in that place anymore.” That place meaning: low self-esteem, despair, non-existent love of who I am, the need of a man to complete me. That place was my former address, and I have no intention of returning there.

Jesus Changed My Address

In our scripture we meet a woman, a nameless one in fact, who heard that Jesus was in town and made her way to Him. Now, this woman was not without fault. She was a sinner and everybody knew it. I doubt she wore a scarlet ‘A’, but they knew her and her sins. Just think, if people knew all of our secret sins, would we be able to show our faces? I know I would definitely hide for a while. Yet, this woman had hope in her last hope, Christ Jesus. Imagine her strength to walk into a house of people who looked down on her, to go to a man who raised the dead, healed the sick, and fed thousands...just to pour out everything. Her tears, her pain, and her heart at his feet. That’s a powerful thought and image. That is also us; we revere God, we pour out our praises to Him, our love, and our thankfulness that He saved us. As He is moving us from one place to another, here come those dreadful haters. Always a mouthful to say with no substance or flavor,

and hate to see you move...solely because they cannot.

Our woman in our scripture was, I believe, in her rawest and most vulnerable state of worship, and then here came those haters. Speaking of her sinful past, and looking down on her. All the while not knowing that Jesus was about to change her address. He addressed her haters and let them know that she gave him the respect, hospitality, and regard that even the owner of the home did not show. Jesus recognized that yes, she was a sinner, but also (because in the text we never hear her speak) that her spirit was ready to receive what she so desperately needed from Him. Love, freedom, forgiveness, and redemption.

When we are in our deepest places of pain, sin, despair, and hurt, we need Jesus. Now for me, I often look to my friends, but they cannot fix what Jesus can. I need him to move me, take me, and place me in a better space to serve Him. Our woman, by the time we end, has been forgiven by her unwavering faith, and boy...did she have some faith! He changed her address. He took her from her dark place to the light. Think for a moment: When you move, you often have a forwarding address, and sometimes if there is a wrong address the post office will put a yellow sticker that says, “return to sender.” And that person will get the mail back. I think sometimes the enemy, or even a few of our haters, either forget or lack clear understanding that we do not live in that place anymore. So you gotta “return some stuff to the sender”. Guilt? Return to sender. Pain? Return to sender. Lustful thoughts? Return to sender. Self doubt. Return to sender.

If God didn’t send for it, don’t accept it. If He removed you from that previous address where your hurt was, do not accept anything from it. Return it to the sender. Christ saved you, He changed your address, and you do not live there anymore.

RINSE, WASH, REPEAT: RESOLVING TO BE CONSISTENT IN 2024

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning;great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV

Because we’re still in the first quarter, I can still say- Happy New Year, y’all!

If I’m being honest, this past January’s New Year’s celebration has felt a little anticlimactic, but not necessarily in a bad way. I’m thankful to have made it into the new year, but I didn’t feel inclined to make a new vision board (my third, but who’s counting) or even a list of resolutions. And that is not so Raven.

If you’re anything like me, you can have the tendency to drink a little too much of the “New Year, New Me” punch and feel the pressure to create fresh, never-before-seen goals, systems, and resolutions to become the biggest and best, most improved version of yourself. Even if I muster up the energy and discipline to sustain a new habit through November, I never feel as lemony-fresh as I did in January.

This year, I have challenged myself to take my time and look back before moving forwards. Before the calendar gets too full, I carve out time to pause and reflect on the previous year. By looking back, I plan what the future can look like with more perspective than the natural, sometimes naive optimism of the new year. Oftentimes, I’ve noticed that I have listed several of the same exact resolutions… multiple years in a row! When I first discovered this, I initially experienced an unsettling doubt. Am I not creative enough to brainstorm new goals? Have I plateaued in life? Am I as ambitious as I think I am, or have I grown complacent?

After reeling through the realization that I have been striving for some of the same goals for five years, I relaxed into the idea that maybe those goals were the most realistic of all. Good things, and oftentimes God-things, take time. Some, but not many higher education degrees can be obtained in 365 days. Most people who achieve a dramatic amount of weight loss do so over the span of years. The best wines and cheeses

have stood the test of time, and greatly improved with every passing year.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. - Hebrews 13:8 ESV

How fortunate are we that Jesus Christ’s love is the same, yesterday, today, and forever more?

Imagine if we could not depend on the constant faithfulness of the Lord year after year. Imagine if we had to find new ways to earn his love, favor, provision, and protection. Not only would that be stressful and exhausting, but the chances are that we would be too busy jumping through hoops for approval to develop a deeply rooted relationship with Abba Father. Praise the Lord that He is faithful and dependable, and that we always have access to the same loving, perfect Father.

For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. - Psalm 100:5 ESV

So, if one of your goals last year was to drink more water and you still need to drink more water, make it a goal this year to drink more water (I know I will). If your goal is to read through the bible in a year, even if you did it last year, go for it again - even if it’s the exact same reading plan. If the goal was to write a book, then maybe the goal is still to write a book. Before you give in to the desire to make shiny, new resolutions for the year, challenge yourself to really reflect on what worked last year, what didn’t work, and what is still a work in progress. Rejoice knowing that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, and the slow, steady pace at which you are being refreshed and refined may be just the perfect portion God has for you in this moment. It is (still) a new year, and if you have accepted Christ’s gift of salvation, you are a new creation. Rest assured knowing that even if your resolutions aren’t brand new, you are daily being made new in Him.

Happy Planning!

SECRETS REVEALED: HOW TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

*NOTE: As you read this devotional, please find a version of the Bible that is easy for you to understand.

FYI: I’m writing this devotional for me. If you find something here that resonates with you, please use it.

Every self-help book, blog, and influencer tells us they know how we can live our best lives. We can be the happiest we’ve ever been if we just do, “insert the new popular thing to do here.” I mean think about it. Some of the people we follow on our socials really have no idea what is going on in our lives. Yet, we perceive ourselves to be like them and we listen. We see that person who completely organizes their entire life, and we desire to be like that. We read about the person who budgeted their way out of debt in 5 years or less and we make a plan to follow their routine. We pick up a new book because the author has flawless makeup, gorgeous natural hair, and has a catchy saying about, “standing on business” and now we must know how to “stand on business.” There is nothing wrong with any of these things. I myself am guilty of following influencers, purchasing self-help books, and listening to podcasts devoted to helping me be a better person. I subscribe to these things because I perceive these influencers to be like me in some way. They are often Christian, educated Black women and because they “look like me” or because I perceive us to “have things in common,” I must be able to learn something from them. However, what I cannot understand is why don’t we follow Jesus the same way? I mean seriously?! Isn’t Jesus the ultimate influencer?! Romans 5:6-11 highlights how Jesus Christ died for us. How many people would you die for right now? Most of us would die to save our children, some of us would die for a spouse, parent, sibling, or friend. But the majority of us would NOT die for a stranger. Jesus Christ is perfect! He lived a perfect life without sin (2 Corinthians 5:21). He sacrificed His perfect life so that we might have eternal life with Him. Let me let you in on a secret Sis. Before Christ came, died, was buried and resurrected, WE DID NOT HAVE A CHANCE AT SALVATION! He gave his life for us; yet we choose to be influenced by people who, oftentimes, will NOT even provide us with a response to a DM. Sis, I submit to you that Jesus is the only influencer you need. Follow Him.

Guiding Scripture: Luke 9:23-25 (NIV)

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

I am not sure of your Bible knowledge but let me give you a little foundation on which we will build. The first four books of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) are called the Gospels. These four books give an account of Jesus’ life on earth

from the perspective of each writer. All four of the writers were followers of Jesus, so they worked with him during his ministry on earth. In chapter 9, Luke shared with us what Jesus told his followers to do in order to live their best lives.

First, Jesus called his followers to deny themselves. Now Sis…I don’t know about you, but why would I deny myself. We live in a treat yourself society and I intend to treat myself.

But, if we are followers of Jesus, we must deny ourselves. What does that mean? Galatians 5:19-21 tells us what happens if we follow the desires of our sinful nature. Denying yourself means being on guard and turning away from those things listed in Galatians 5:19-21. Take a look at the list Sis. What on this list do you struggle with putting away? Be honest. Only you and God truly know the answer.

Second, Jesus said we must take up our cross daily and follow him. As Christians, we may suffer for Christ. Our cross will not look like the physical cross where Jesus was nailed. However, we all bear a cross if we are followers of Christ. 2 Timothy 1:8 states that we might have to suffer for the sake of the Good News. What is the Good News? Jesus Christ is the son of God. He lived as man, was crucified, died, buried, and was resurrected by God so that we might be saved. People persecute us Christians for believing this message. But we must make the choice DAILY to pick up our cross and follow him.

Third, Jesus told us that we must give our lives for him to be saved. Our lives do not belong to us. Our lives belong to God. Everything we have belongs to God. To honor God, we must dedicate our lives to Him. Jesus was the perfect example of this. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to God’s will. I invite you to pick one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) to read and study about Jesus’ life. Really pick one book and read it in detail. Take notes about the things that Jesus did in his daily life. What can you learn from Jesus?

Fourth, Jesus shared that it means nothing if we own the entire world but lose ourselves. Sis, what I am telling you is that we get so caught up in what the world tells us to want, that we forget what Jesus wants for us. Jesus wants us all to be saved. He wants us all to live our eternal lives with him and our Father God in heaven. Romans 8:31-39 tells how Jesus is pleading our case as we live our sinful lives while also informing us that nothing can separate us from God’s love.

Summary: Sis, in order to live your best life, you must make the choices DAILY to not engage in sin, follow Christ, and give your life completely for him. How can you do this? Understand what sin is and be able to identify it. Once you know what it is, you can deny yourself. Know what you must do to truly be a follower of Christ. Study his life and model his behavior. Finally, surrender your life to Christ. As you begin to grow and change, who you surround yourself with might change. Things you enjoy might change. You will elevate to a level that will surpass even the most popular influencer on the socials because you are influenced by the greatest person of all time: Jesus Christ.

Dr. Rashunda L.

ABIDING: FINDING TIME FOR CLOSENESS AND FRUIT

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

- John 15:4 ESV

I want you to pause for a moment. Stop and imagine someone you consider a good friend, maybe even a best friend, a relative, a mentor you greatly admire, or even a potential partner. Make this friend someone you have known for decades and someone you esteem highly and with whom you cherish the time. You may glance at your phone every hour in anticipation of a message from them. You scroll past hundreds of posts on social media looking for an update from them. If and when they call about once a month, sometimes it feels super rushed, and oftentimes the call only has enough space and time to address their physical and emotional needs. In fact, though you wouldn’t say it aloud, sometimes you feel like your friend is talking at you and not with you. They are technically there, but they are also not really there. You know they mean well and that they love you, but how do these microfractures in your relationship make you feel over the span of a year? How about five years?

If I’m being honest, I have been that friend more than once. This behavior has at times described my relationship not only with loved ones, but with God. I have taken advantage of the fact that the Lord knows me and loves me and is not going anywhere. I have rushed through my quiet times, muttered out thoughtless prayers, often falling asleep in the middle of them. In crisis, I have crawled back and erupted with a laundry list of desperate requests, never once stopping to take a breath and listen. Praise God for his mercy and patience because He is much sweeter to me than I am to others in this situation! First, it’s important to remember that unlike the instinctive human nature, the Lord is not secretly numbering our transgressions or tallying the times we haven’t come to him in prayer. He doesn’t feel snubbed when we don’t spend time with Him or use that as an excuse not to provide for us or protect us. His blessings on our lives are not dependent on our faithfulness (which is a great thing) because he sent his perfect son Jesus Christ to die on a cross for all our sins and shortcomings. Hallelujah for the cross, y’all!

If we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. - 2 Timothy 2:13 ESV

The Lord’s blessings are not conditional on our goodness, but we do sell ourselves short when we fail to tap into a deeper relationship with the Creator of the Universe, the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace, the One who can bring us through anything. By abiding, also defined as remaining, being present and dwelling with the Lord, we begin to know a love deeper than anything this earth can give. We can learn that this love is worth trusting, and that gives us courage and wisdom to face every circumstance. We learn to wait and we learn to listen. To abide is to stay safe and close, dwelling in the hands of the Lord while He equips and supports us in all of life’s battles. It also means being open to the pruning from the Good Gardener, and trusting Him to remove anything that isn’t producing fruit, growing you, or glorifying Him in our lives.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear

fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. - John 15:1-2 ESV

I co-run a busy household with my husband, and our only “child” has four legs and a tail. Even still, with both of us working full-time, one person in school part-time after work, and our unique social circles and hobbies, it can be a challenge to have quality time together without lots of intention and effort. But you better believe that I will ensure we have our weekly date night and plenty of one on one time, no matter what! At first it felt weird at times to schedule quality time with a loved one, but as someone who lives off her calendar consistently, I know that it means the time is sacred and worth protecting, and that’s worth it. I’m not ashamed to say I’ve done the same thing with my time with the Lord! Theologian Martin Luuther once said, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” (Martin Luther). I can’t say I’ve spent three hours in prayer in a single day, but more than once (or twice), I have literally calendar-scheduled time with the Lord. For this time, I try to make sure my phone is on DND, I’m in a quiet place, and I limit distractions (because focusing the mind is already an adventure for me). These pockets of time allow me to abide with God and really lean into what He may be communicating through His word, His people and His Holy Spirit.

Abiding sounds absolutely sweet, but in my extensively imperfect experience, it is so much easier said than done. I am reassured that even when I get carried away and talk at God for length, He will not waste a moment or prayer. He hears and honors our breath prayers before work, and before the doctor comes back in with the results of lab tests. If we only make time to glimpse the verse of the day on our bible apps, He will use that morsel of His word to refine us. I am thankful for friends in my life who remind me that we should live not in fear of punishment for spending too little time with God , but we should develop a desire for spending more and more time abiding with the Lord. When we do that, He promises us more of Himself, which is more than enough, but in His kindness, He also provides us all the fruit that results from being around someone so brilliant, sweet, generous, kind, and world-changing.

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. - John 15: 7-11 So as you plan your week, challenge yourself to schedule in all the things you love, and plan some time to abide. I have a feeling it will be the best time spent all year.

Bonus: Sometimes I enjoy a little background music when I’m prayer journaling or reading. For those of you who don’t know, I love a good Spotify playlist. I’m sharing one of my favorite creations, “Abide and Chill” at the QR code below. It’s filled with lowkey, vibey worship music, and I hope it’ll be enjoyed as you abide. Happy listening, y’all!

A SOUL CHECK WITH THE FATHER

Have you ever gotten dressed, put on some “smell good,” laid those edges, hopped in your car, and put the key in the ignition only to realize your car battery had gone out?! It can be especially surprising or unnerving when you are headed somewhere important and realize you will not make it to your destination.

Maybe that has not been your story, sis, but it has certainly been mine. I hate to admit that this has happened to me more than once, too! Do you know the wildest part about each time my car battery died? My car had been giving me warning signs all along that its life force was dying. From dim lights to a slow startup to my phone charging at a snail's pace - the evidence was right in front of my eyes.

These subtle signs that went overlooked were an indication that the need for a mechanic was quickly approaching. The results of ignoring the signs impacted not only me but others as well. If I had been getting my battery checked regularly - or at all - the problem could have been avoided completely.

Now I want us to take this a step further and imagine that our soul is like that car battery. Our soul is composed of our mind, will, and emotions. This means that it encompasses what we think, what we desire, and how we feel. Just like my story above, we can have plans to navigate through life in a holy way but our soul wounds have kept us from being able to do so. We may have small things that have happened over time that have made our souls grow weary- disappointment, fear, betrayal, busyness, misalignment, and so much more.

When our souls grow weary, we can struggle to operate in our God-given identity. This not only impacts our lives but the lives of others whom God wants us to touch! So today we're going to THE Mechanic, sis. Whether you've been ignoring the signs, believe your "battery" is in a good space, or fall somewhere in between, we're going to God to get His report. It’s time for a soul check with the Father:

Soul Check Question #1: Are my mind, will, and emotions in the hands

of the Father, or has the enemy tried to steal what isn’t his?

Soul Check Question #2: In what specific ways have my mind, will, and emotions been impacted by the circumstances of my life lately?

Soul Check Question #3: Are there any lies I’m believing that have held my mind, will, and emotions captive?

Soul Check Question #4: What is one action step I can take to put my mind, will, and emotions back in the hands of the Father?

No matter what your soul life looks like right now, remember that we can always come to the Father for the restoration and power-up that we need! Our souls find rest in the Father (Psalm 62:1). He restores our souls (Psalm 23:3). His instructions refresh our souls (Psalm 19:7). Jesus oversees our souls (1 Peter 2:25). Take some time this month to intentionally sit with God and ask Him to restore your soul. Let Him fill you up so you have the power and healing to be the woman He has called you to be on this earth. Ask Him to remove anything that has made your soul weary, and fill you with what comes from Him instead - love, joy, and the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). He sees you and He hears you, sis! His strength is our portion forever.

Pray It Out

Father God, thank You for restoring my soul! Thank You for showing me circumstances in my life that have caused my soul to grow weary. I ask for Your strength to release those areas to You and for Holy Spirit to fill any void that is left. Help me to operate in this life with a rested, revived, restored, power-filled soul. Give me the strength to take captive every lie that has impacted my mind, will, and emotions in bondage. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, and I ask that You free my soul today. Thank You for Your love, protection, and restoration! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

GRACE IS SUFFICIENT

Maybe you've been journaling, self reflecting, Youtubing it trying to figure it out on your own, but to no avail. Perhaps you've been struggling with this same challenge for years. It’s not something that is immensely overwhelming because you are able to compartmentalize it and move forward in other areas of your life, but the truth be told, it is a thorn in your side. And here lately, it’s a thorn that you’d like to remove. When Apostle Paul spoke to God about the thorn in his side the Lord told him that His grace is sufficient, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9).

What, God? I have a hurting, burning, irritating, frustrating, nerve racking thorn in my side and all you’re offering is grace? That was me once upon a time and so Sis, here’s where rest comes in. Paul’s response to God’s reply was, “Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Paul heard the Lord and surrendered his will. He accepted the power of Christ to rest upon him rather than continuing in unrest at the idea of having this thorn in his side. When the power of Christ rests upon you, you’re in God’s rest.

Scripture reads as if Paul immediately accepted God’s response. He suddenly and ‘most gladly’ had a true change of heart, embracing the infirmity along with God’s rest. He said, “Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size- abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 MSG) He did not continue to plead. The greatest take away here is that He believed what God said. He didn't question grace being the solution or doubt that in his weakness, he was made stronger in Christ. How difficult is it to believe that we can be strong in weakness? You may not see it that way at first understandably, because the notion of being strong somehow in the midst of where you feel most weak is a paradox in thought for a carnal minded soul.

Why does God do this? How is it that we can be following Christ and have great things happening in our lives but have one thing that we can’t get control of, wrestle to the ground, tie it up, and dispose of it? At times in our minds, we’re like “I have the looks I want, the lifestyle I want, the relationship I want, and the family I want. Look at me, look at what I did so well. Why am I still dealing with this issue?” The Phillips version, (2 Corinthians 12:9) sheds some light on this. It reads, “So tremendous, however, were the revelations that God gave me that, in order to prevent my becoming absurdly conceited, I was given a physical handicap—one of Satan’s angels—to harass me and effectually stop any conceit. Three times I begged the Lord for it to leave me, but his reply has been, “My grace is enough for you: for where there

is weakness, my power is shown the more completely.”

So know that when you are struggling with something long term, it’s time to release it, accept the “weakness,”- that maybe your trouble shooting, problem solving, and prowess can’t fix it this time and that it may be that way by design. Embrace God’s power and live it out with confidence, wisdom, and freedom knowing that God is not only present and fully aware of your situation but is the likely orchestrator of it. For me this hit hard because I believed God could and would resolve anything, with prayer and fasting and diligence. This too shall pass, right? Wrong, and so the thought of receiving grace - unmerited favor and love - to ride it out was not an idea I welcomed.

At a point in my life I prayed agonizingly about the thorn in my side. It wasn’t a physical disability but it did burden me for many years. Frequently, a new thought would trigger new activity on my part and immediately the unsuccessful attempt transmitted great pain in the form of stress, anxiety, confusion, worry, and a bout of depression. I heard someone say depres-sion is a need for deep rest. Rest from false pretenses, catering to the crowd, and trying to be all you desire to be on your own. It’s how I learned to rest. I didn’t surrender swiftly and cheerfully like Paul, but in not surrendering to this one thing, I began to lose grip on the many things I believed I was managing pretty well. I learned in both instances that all that I accomplished and didn’t accomplish was done in His grace. In the mindset of wanting it all and not being able to, I surrendered to a deep rest, so much so that it has become the message of hope that I choose to share.

Deep rest, imagine that. There’s blissful relief in letting go and letting God; casting all your cares to someone who cares. Rest is what God wants for us. We are beckoned to rest as His plea in this passage suggests, “Drop everything and listen, listen as he speaks: “Don’t turn a deaf ear as in the Bitter Uprising, As on the day of the Wilderness Test, when your ancestors turned and put me to the test. For forty years they watched me at work among them, as over and over they tried my patience. And I was provoked—oh, was I provoked! ‘Can’t they keep their minds on God for five minutes? Do they simply refuse to walk down my road?’ Exasperated, I exploded, ‘They’ll never get where they’re headed, never be able to sit down and rest.’ (MSG Psalm 95:7-11.)

So whatever, you’re dealing with or going through, just know that His grace (freely given, unmerited favor and love) is sufficient. Focus on God, not the thorn; on the Power, not the weakness; on rest, not unrest. Enough said, His grace is sufficient, now rest.

LOVE YOURSELF FIRST: THE FOUNDATION OF LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR

"The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

- Mark 12:31 (NIV)

In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to overlook the profound wisdom contained in Jesus' command to love our neighbors as ourselves. We often focus on the first part- loving our neighbors- but neglect the crucial prerequisite: loving ourselves. Yet, the truth is, we cannot fully embrace the call to love others until we have first embraced ourselves with the love of God.

Loving yourself is not about selfishness or self-centeredness. It's about recognizing your worth and value as a beloved child of God. It's about understanding that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, intricately crafted by the hands of the Creator. When we fail to love ourselves, we miss out on experiencing the fullness of God's love for us and, consequently, struggle to extend that love to others.

The key to loving our neighbors as ourselves lies in understanding the depth of God's love for us. As we immerse ourselves in His Word and meditate on His promises, we begin to grasp the unfathomable breadth and length and height and depth of His love (Ephesians 3:18). We learn to see ourselves through His eyes- as cherished, accepted, and forgiven- and we are transformed by the power of His love.

When we love ourselves as God loves us, we are filled to overflowing with His love. It becomes a wellspring within us, pouring out in acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity

toward others. We no longer view love as a limited resource to be hoarded, but as an abundant gift to be shared freely with those around us.

Loving ourselves first is not an act of arrogance, but of humility. It is an acknowledgment of our dependence on God's grace and an acceptance of His unconditional love for us. As we abide in His love, we are empowered to love others with the same selflessness and sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrated on the cross.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your boundless love and grace. Help me to love myself as You love me—to see myself through Your eyes and to embrace the worth and value You have placed within me. Fill me with Your love so that I may overflow with love for others, reflecting Your light and truth in a world in need of Your love. In Jesus' name, amen.

THROUGH JESUS

*NOTE: As you read this devotional, get a version of the Bible that you understand. I recommend the New Living Translation (NLT).*

Sis, I am tired! As I write this for you (and for myself), I am overworked, overwhelmed, and overcommitted. I am a full-time wife, full-time mother, full-time daughter and granddaughter, full-time professor, and most importantly, a full-time Christian. As I think about all these roles I am fulfilling, I must admit that I asked for it all. I asked God to give me clarity about His will and became a Christian over 20 years ago. I prayed to God to be a wife and mother and He answered my prayers. I prayed for my current job and now I have tenure. I pleaded (and still do) with God to keep my mother and grandmother alive and healthy and they remain here on this earth. Yes, sis. I’m letting you know I asked for everything that I have and now I’m tired. I’m sharing this with you because many of us are tired. Yet, we find ourselves in the very position we prayed for days, weeks, months, or years prior.

My goal for you, and for myself, with this devotional is to tell you that you can be tired and still be thankful. God never said things would be easy for us; however, he did promise us that we can have everything we desire. He also told us that He will give us what we need to maintain (Psalms 23:1; Philippians 4:19). With this devotional, my purpose is to show you how God helps us to find ourselves through endurance.

Guiding Scripture: James 1:2-4 (NLT)

2Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Define: ENDURE-to hold out against; sustain without impairment or yielding (Dictionary.com)

Sis, I want you to look at this word ENDURE and know that it is something that is attainable. I want you to see this word and know that God has considered all parts of us in His perfect design. Simply put, God knows what we need because He knows who we are. After all, He made us. Sis, I offer to you that if you can ENDURE for Jesus Christ, you can find yourself and

find GREAT JOY. Let me take this simple six-letter word and break it down in a way for you to find yourself through scripture.

• Exist: Genesis 1:26 tells us exactly how God made us. We were created in His image. Just as God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are mind, body, and spirit. Scripture tells us how to nourish each.

• Needs: God will provide ALL, even our most basic needs. In the field of psychology, Maslow created a hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow, there are essential things we all need to survive. These include sleep, shelter, food, etc. Scripture tells us in Matthew 6:25-34 that God will provide these things for us if we ask. We never need to worry about our basic needs.

• Develop Understanding: Okay, so I cheated here and merged two of the letters. But, if we are to ENDURE for Christ we need to develop understanding of God’s will for our lives. We often think we have all the answers, but Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us that our thinking is FLAWED. Yes sis, it is true. Even you do not know everything (again, talking to myself here). We need Jesus and we need to read and study the scriptures to grow our understanding.

• Repent: Now this is the one! Repent means to feel so sorry for committing sin that we change for the better. We must physically turn away from things that are a deliberate violation of God’s laws (Acts 3:19).

• Engage: It is time to do what Christ tells us to do. Acts 2:38 tells us to repent and be baptized. This is just one step for us to become who we truly are in Christ Jesus.

Summary: To endure is to hold out, to not give in, to not yield. As we learn about ourselves through Jesus Christ, we first must learn about how we exist as God’s creation. Next, we must believe and trust that God will supply all our needs, no matter how great or small. We can deepen our trust for God by developing understanding of His word and will for our lives. Lastly, we must repent and engage. We do this by turning away from those things that are not of God and engage in those things that Jesus Christ modeled for us in the New Testament. Sis, I hope this devotional has been a blessing to you. Please know that as you study these scriptures and work through ENDURE, it will not be easy. It will be challenging. You will stumble, you might outright fall. But if you return to this devotional and study these scriptures, you can get closer to finding yourself in Jesus Christ.

PRAYING JUST AS YOU ARE

Do you remember the game "telephone" we used to play back in elementary school? Everyone would sit in a line and someone would whisper a sentence or phrase in the first person's ear. Then, each person would whisper the message down the line. The last person would say aloud the phrase and everyone would erupt in laughter or confusion!

Most of the time, the message got lost in translation and something like "Sherry ate 5 pickles" would somehow turn into "Terry paid with 5 nickels." Honestly, I am not sure I can recall a time when we played telephone and we got the message right! This usually happened because it was being passed between too many people, or people would purposefully change the message for their own entertainment. Either way, the message was not the same.

Sis, sometimes we can treat our prayer life and communication with God like a game of telephone. We may be relying on someone else to talk to Him for us when we have direct access to Him ourselves (thank You, Jesus). We may do this because we doubt that our prayers are being heard, are not sure He wants to hear from us, or simply do not know how to approach Him. There is certainly power in praying for one another - James 5:16 commands us to do so! At the same time, God commands us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). He not only wants us to intercede for one another, but He wants to hear directly from us, too.

If you have had doubts that your prayers are being heard, I want to affirm that He hears you. Psalm 145:18 says “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.” It can be difficult when we do not get the response or answer that we want from Him, but I can assure you that the Lord hears the prayers of His children.

If you have felt like God did not want to hear from you for whatever reason, I want to affirm that He does! Remember that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). There is nothing that we can ever do that will make Him not want to fellowship and love on His children.

Lastly, if you have felt like you don’t know how to talk to God, I want to affirm that you can open your mouth and come to Him just as you are. He is not looking for fancy language or for us to sound like anyone else. He simply wants us to share our hearts with Him openly and honestly. He already knows what we are thinking and feeling, but there is power in verbalizing it to Him. When we bring our joys, struggles, and questions before Him, we invite Him into our daily lives and give Him permission to work in and through us.

As we practice authentic prayer, we will not only experience a greater intimacy with God but personal transformation. Through prayer, we invite the Holy Spirit to work in us, molding us into the image of Christ. We become more sensitive to His leading, more attuned to His voice, and more aware of His presence in our lives. We begin to boldly approach the throne of grace and pour out our hearts before Him (Hebrews 4:16).

My good sis, do not hesitate to come to God just as you are! Pour out your heart to Him, even if the words feel imperfect or inadequate. He is not looking for perfection; He is looking for relationship. He longs to hear your voice and to walk alongside you in every season of life.

Think of practical ways that you can pause and chat more with the Father throughout this month. It can be while driving, doing dishes, or doing other everyday activities. It does not have to be fancy, just open your mouth and tell Him what's on your mind. He wants to hear it all!

Pray It Out

Lord, I thank You for the gift of prayer! Thank You that I do not have to go through anyone else to lift my prayers to You. Thank You Jesus for Your sacrifice that gave me direct access to our Father. Lord, I am coming to You today asking for You to put a fresh spark in my prayer life. Help me to remove anything that would keep me from coming to You in prayer - feelings of inadequacy, thinking I have limited time, or simply not thinking about it at all. Whatever may be keeping me from a deeper prayer life with You, please show it to me. Give me a fresh fire and a desire to talk to You in authentic prayer without ceasing! In Jesus' Name, Amen.

PRESENCE UNKNOWN

As I go to send an email and scroll over the recipient's name a text box opens and reads “Presence unknown,” and instantly this message comes to mind. I’m reminded of the scripture “My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14) God promises to go along with us. He is willing to go wherever we go in the high places, low places and all that's in between. We can never say “presence unknown” about God. His presence is unmistakable throughout each and every day and just like we are always in His presence, He is always in ours whether we are mindful of it or not. “Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, You’d find me in a minute— you’re already there waiting! Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!” It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.” (Psalm 139:7-12 MSG). God’s presence is always known, never unknown, because wherever you are He is there with you and for you. “For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” (Deuteronomy 20:4).

In His presence He gives us rest and His rest brings relief from burden and struggle. He makes hard things easy. He makes crooked paths, straight. In His rest we accomplish so much more with half the time and energy it would take to do ourselves and that’s if we could do it ourselves. Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28 MSG). Moses found God’s presence so critical that he told God, “If your presence doesn’t take the lead here, call this trip off right now,” and God promised to see him to the end of his journey. (Genesis 33:14-16 MSG) We can expect the same for our individual journeys: rest, peace, success and victory as long as we remain present to His presence through connection and relationship.

1 Chronicles 16:27 reads, “Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.” Again the gain is ours just by being in our Father’s presence. Our present state of mind is an indication of our presence in His presence. The psalmist (Psalm 16:11), says “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” When we're not feeling that joy, where are we? What present condition may be clouding our mind or dominating our thoughts enough to change His joy to joylessness? Whose presence are we in when we lie despairingly, for long periods of time in those hard places and dark spaces in our lives? When we are in His presence our minds shift and we naturally come before the Lord with a spirit of thanksgiving and praise that melts away despair and hopelessness. You can’t be in the light and the dark at the same time but if you find yourself in either, He’s there. We won’t even imagine a world with a missing in action God!

Now for us “being present" is a newer part of our vernacular as we find ourselves being reminded to focus and concentrate on what we’re experiencing in the ‘now’. Being present can be an ongoing challenge because we tend to continuously multi-task while focused on thoughts of the past, present, and future simultaneously. In this space we’re unsettled and wrestling with so many ideas that we can overwhelm ourselves and then question God’s presence. When you get present, you can realize and revel in God’s presence and when you’re in unrest you may not see Him at all. When I was initiating my email, I was quietly in His presence and this allowed me to hear from Him. It’s a blissful moment when your spirit connects to Spirit and you know you heard from Him.

God’s presence was with all of the noble characters of the Bible. He was with Noah as he built that ark (Genesis 6-9), and with Joseph as he rose from the bottom of the well to the second in charge in Egypt (Genesis 37-50). How about David as he fought Goliath (1 Samuel 17) and then there’s Daniel in the Lions den (Daniel 6), and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who were tossed in the fire (Daniel 3). They all remained in the presence of God going into frightening situations but they courageously rested in His presence and came out victorious. All of these stories demonstrate how connection, relationship, and faith gave them unwavering assurance that an all knowing, all powerful and loving God would aid them in carrying out His commands and deliver them from hardships and death itself.

Do you recall Jonah? He tried to escape God’s presence in his disobedience because he did not agree with God’s plan and therefore, tried to flee the assignment. He learned that not even the ocean and a boat full of fishermen could hide him from the presence of God. Disobedience can seemingly take us out of God’s presence because when we begin to focus solely on our personal wants, needs, and desires we can lose our way and feel isolated but by the grace of God when we turn back He’s right there because He never left. If you ever feel like His presence is unknown, know that it’s you that is missing or looking elsewhere, because the truth is we're always in the presence of an omnipresent God. Being present is who He is and what He does. “And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:14)

Focus on being present, show up to give your undivided attention to your children, your partner, yourself, and mostly to your God. Live every present moment in His divine presence and reap the benefits of being in His rest in whatever you do and if you fall off “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19). Amen.

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

When you think of love, what comes to mind? Does a love that transcends time cross your mind? Do you think of a love that protects you from dangers seen and unseen? What about a love that remains even when you seemingly push it away? A love like this is very tangible and is freely given to everyone willing to accept it. It’s the love we did not know we needed, but once we receive it, we cannot believe we ever lived without it.

We look back and see this love literally dying for us, shedding tears, and pleading for us in our ignorance. As we realize this never changing love and say yes to committing to this love, we are saved. Saved from the dark spaces that lie in wait to consume us. We are saved from death of many sorts. One of the most beautiful parts of this love story is that the love is not simply past tense. It’s greater than once loved; it’s always loved. For this love continues in our present to save us from the power of the darkness that beckons to us to draw nearer. It may be enough for this love to save us from darkness and the power of the darkness. But this love is even greater; for it remains to save us from the very presence of the darkness that works hard to keep hold of us.

There is not a love story known to man that is sweeter than this love story. A love that can be described by many words and yet indescribable at the same time. One word can be used to sum up this love: salvation. As with the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is salvation past, present, and future. When we declared with our mouths and believed in our hearts, we were saved (Romans 10:9). We look back at that moment, that began even before our declaration, as the moment love grabbed our hand as the angels did for Lot and his family to lead us away from the doom waiting to fall upon the place of sheer darkness. There was safety and preservation in our love connection. We probably did not realize that love connection would have a greater impact, infusing those around us with the remnants of the love we had received. But our yes to Jesus Christ brings love to us and through us. As stated in the book of Acts, “So, they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” A promising love for you, for me, and for those we are meant to love.

Analyzing this love, we find the things that used to hold us captive don’t have the same power. Whether it was the approval of man, comfort food, inhalation of an inhibitor, or an unhealthy human connection, this love continuously washes away the desires and dependency of the false love we once depended on, ran to, and cherished. Falling deeper into His love brings richer experiences. The more we experience His love, freedom is what we walk out each and every day. See, we are not just saved from sin, but we are also in the process of being saved from the power of sin. This is why song writers can proclaim, “Sin has no hold on me!” For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live (Romans 8:13). To love Him is to obey Him. And as you love Him you do as Paul commanded the church of Philippi, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Phil 2:12).

This is where manmade love stories end, and the credits begin to roll or the book is closed. But not this love! This love pierces all future plans of everyone involved except God. For this love works to save us from the very presence of sin. It’s a future love or sum of benefits and blessings which love who abide in Christ will receive. Picture this, enjoying redemption from all earthly perils and being in the physical presence of Christ in the eternal kingdom of God. Insert any shout to glorify the King that comes upon your lips. To this thought, Paul said, “But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!” (Romans 13:11-14 MSG)
