WHAT GOES AROUND
(Re: Give in Order to Get, Issue 274)
I also had an experience where Hashem “paid me back” for a chesed. A few years ago, my son’s friend, a chasan from Eretz Yisroel, was here in the States for a few months to collect for his wedding. He sometimes ate with us on Shabbos, and we tried to help him as much as possible.
As his wedding date approached, the chasan had to go back to Eretz Yisroel, but he had some clothing and things that didn’t have room in his suitcase. We told him to leave it with us and we’d find a way to send it to him. We thought we’d manage to find someone traveling to Eretz Yisroel who could take the items, but we didn’t, so in the end, we paid to have it shipped to him.
At the time, we would purchase vitamins at a local store where you were entered into a raffle for every purchase. A week after we shipped the chasan’s items to Eretz Yisroel, we won the raffle for the exact amount of money we paid for shipping.

SCHOOL RULES
(Re: Your Say, Mother Knows Best, Issue 273)
To the frustrated mother of a high school girl: Do you think that the school hires a full-time secretary just to make your life complicated? The school’s attendance rules were obviously created out of necessity, so that students less conscientious than your daughters will not create an environment of hefkerus and lack of accountability. Your daughters definitely benefit by learning in an organized school environment with structure and accountability.
Also, please consider what message your criticism and disrespect toward the school gives your daughters.

ANTI-TIP BRACKETS SAVE LIVES
Save a lot agmas nefesh with two screws and sixty seconds. Every gas range comes with an anti-tip bracket. The purpose of this bracket is to anchor the range to the wall so that it cannot tip over. Most
people do not install the anti-tip bracket; they just position the range in place and can’t imagine that it would ever tip over. But if a child opens the oven door and sits onto it, the entire range can tip, and all of the hot pots on the stovetop can potentially spill on the child, chalilah
It might sound unlikely to you, but unfortunately, there are families that spend months in the hospital because of the burns and skin grafts needed following this kind of accident.
The anti-tip bracket is located in the back of the range and keeps the range from tilting. Please find your anti-tip bracket that comes in the range instructions package and install it. It only takes a minute and can save you a lifetime of pain.
Can’t find the bracket? Call the range’s manufacturer, give them your model number, and for $10, they will send you a new one. The bracket installation instructions will be included.
Install it tonight!

A Concerned Reader
I have a novel idea that I believe would be productive and worthwhile: Our high schools should offer classes in Spanish. So many of us interact with Spanish speakers daily, in our homes and at local businesses, or even employ Spanish speakers in various roles. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could communicate more effectively?

GROWING SURVEY UPDATE
Over the last few years, we at L’hisgadal have helped many families get approved by their insurance for growth hormone treatment.
Since there is a big demand for natural solutions, we have created a survey to gather information. Please help others by participating in the one-time survey about any positive or negative experiences you may have had with Super Patch, cranial therapy, kinesiology, reflexology, Argiplus, stretching exercises, hot showers, muscle testing, gem stones, and natural vitamins, including non-medical side effects.
You can access the survey at 201-844-8424. Please do not leave your name. We will not save your number. Please be aware that we need at least 300 respondents in order to share statistics with Klal Yisroel; if everyone assumes that others will call, we’ll be left without information.
In addition, we are looking for the contact info of someone who left a message about recommending treatments based on pictures of the patient’s eye.
Thank you,

WHAT NONFOOD ITEM DO YOU LIKE TO STOCK UP ON BEFORE PESACH?
IN GENERAL, WHERE DO YOU STORE BULK PURCHASES?
Disposable baking pans and covers — especially challah pans, which I need the first Shabbos after Pesach!
Tissues. I open all of the boxes before storing them so we never have to worry about open tissues before Shabbos.
Regular and fancy papergoods, cutlery and cups
I like to stock up on men’s wool tzitzis. As a busy working mom, I find that they’re so time-consuming to wash (yeah, dry cleaners too), it’s just not worth it for me to take care of them. Before Pesach we can find good deals on them, so we stock up for the year.
The most expensive product in Boro Park (or anywhere in New York City) is — space! Using that space for storing anything that is not needed immediately might be more expensive than you think. We have stores on every corner, so saving $5 on a product to store it in a space that is worth $40 or more per square foot… do the math.
At my workplace
We get very creative with storing our bulk orders. Wherever there’s an empty spot, something fills it up. For example, under my buffet and china closet we have plates, tablecloths, Ziploc bags and boxes of cutlery, and on top of the seforim, we store cases of baking pans. Between the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling are packages of napkins and containers.
I’m lucky to have a walkin closet for storage. One shelf is dedicated to paper goods.
We store bulk items in the dead space behind our sectional couch. In the basement The bottom of the linen

Eavesdropping on Mindoneers
The Boy Who Couldn’t Sit Still
"Hi, is this Mindoneers?" The voice on the other end sounded frazzled. "I’m wondering if you can help my son. He’s in fifth grade."
"We definitely work with fifth graders. Can you tell me a little more?"
She sighed. 'I’m at the end of my rope with Ari. He can’t sit still, he’s always in trouble at yeshiva, and nothing changes despite all the meetings.'"
"Is this only happening at school?" I asked.
"Definitely not!" She let out a tired laugh. "At home, it’s just as bad. We love him, and he has tons of friends. But I can’t relax for a second. If I turn my back, he’s overturning the house, or putting my two-year-old on the roof. I never know what’s coming. And now that he’s in fifth grade, they’re starting Gemara. It’s such an important year, and I’m worried. I always thought he’d grow out of this, but now I’m not so sure. I’m really concerned about his future."
in core brain skills that need to develop first."
"Core brain skills? What do you mean?"
"Have you noticed if Ari struggles with frustration or impatience, especially when things don’t go his way?"
"Notice? It’s impossible to miss! He can get really explosive sometimes."
Through a series of targeted exercises, he can develop these underlying skills. And once that happens, learning suddenly becomes easier. He gains the ability to understand, focus, and even have the patience to persist. When these skills are strengthened, everything in a child's life improves, and they begin to truly thrive."
"That sounds like exactly what we need. How do we get started?"
I always thought he'd grow out of this, but now I'm not so sure.
"That makes a lot of sense," I explained. "Often, when kids have trouble sitting still or focusing, it’s because certain foundational brain skills haven’t fully developed. And those same skills impact not just learning, but behavior and emotional regulation too. That’s why you’re seeing these challenges in so many areas of his life."
"I had no idea." She sounded stunned. "Is there anything we can do to help him develop these skills?"
"The first step is teaching your son that he is the boss of his body and eyes—that he has the ability to sit still and keep his focus on the Gemara while information is being taught. The next step is helping him understand that he is also the boss of his brain, meaning he can actively engage with the material and take responsibility for his learning.
"I’d recommend scheduling an evaluation," I responded. "We’ll assess Ari’s skills and create a personalized plan to help him build the abilities he needs. Once those foundations are stronger, focusing on Gemara, and everything else, will become so much easier for him."
For the first time, her voice sounded hopeful. "Wow, I’m so glad I called. I actually feel like there’s hope for Ari now."
As I hung up, I was reminded once again of the powerful impact Mindoneers has, not just for kids like Ari, but for their families, too. With the right support, these children can develop the core skills they need to thrive both in school and in life.

PARSHAS VAYAKHEL
Shabbos Above All
Y. Levenstein
When Moshe Rabbeinu gathers Klal Yisroel to introduce the building of the Mishkan, he first reminds them of the mitzvah of Shabbos. “Six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have sanctity, a day of complete rest to Hashem; whoever performs work shall be put to death” (Shemos 35:2).
As the Yidden prepared to begin building the Mishkan, Moshe wanted to remind them that there is something even more important: shemiras Shabbos. As significant as building the Mishkan may be, it does not supersede Shabbos.
Interestingly, in the previous parsha, Ki Sisa, when Hashem issues the commandment to build the Mishkan, Hashem first speaks of the Mishkan and only then tells Moshe Rabbeinu to warn the Yidden about shemiras Shabbos. “Ach es Shabsosai tishmoru” — Only keep My Shabbos, for it is a sign between Me and you for generations… ( Shemos 31:13).
Hashem uses the expression “ach,” which Chazal say always comes to diminish. Hashem was insinuating that although it is very important to build the Mishkan, it is even more important to keep Shabbos. Why, when Hashem spoke to Moshe, did He first command him regarding the Mishkan and then about Shabbos, while Moshe, when speaking to Klal Yisroel, switched the order and first introduced Shabbos and then the Mishkan?
THE KLI YAKAR EXPLAINS: Shabbos is indicative of the kavod of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Keeping Shabbos demonstrates that we recognize that Hashem created the world.
The Mishkan is an indication of the kavod of Klal Yisroel. Hashem pardoned us for the Chet Ha’egel, and brought His Shechinah to rest among us.
In a show of respect to Klal Yisroel, Hashem preceded the commandment of the Mishkan to the mitzvah of Shabbos, commanding the mitzvah that represents His kavod second to the mitzvah that represents the kavod of His nation. To impress upon us that Shabbos is actually more important than the Mishkan, Hashem inserted a “but,” with the word “ach.”
On the other hand, when Moshe Rabbeinu relayed Hashem’s words to Klal Yisroel, he reversed the order, since he wished to express the kavod of Hakadosh Baruch Hu over the kavod of Klal Yisroel. And so, Moshe first spoke about Shabbos and then about the Mishkan.
THE BRISKER RAV looked up to the sky and then back toward the shore. “When will the ship dock?” he asked anxiously.
“Can I bring along the necklace Mama gave me? It’s very precious to me… And, besides, it isn’t actually Shabbos yet.”
The sun was about to set, heralding the arrival of Shabbos Kodesh, and the Brisker Rav and some of his young children were aboard the ship that was bringing them to Eretz Yisroel. It was a stormy time for Klal Yisroel — 1941, in the midst of the great destruction of Europe — and the Rav had the opportunity to escape, while his wife and younger children remained behind.
Again and again, the Rav checked his watch and asked aloud, “How much longer until we arrive?” Trepidation was visible on his face. It was taking longer than expected, and Shabbos was drawing near.
Finally, the ship anchored, bringing its relieved passengers to safe shores. There was still time before the sun would actually set, but the Rav announced to his family members, “To me, it is already Shabbos!” He rushed to disembark the ship and instructed his children to leave all of their belongings on board. He paid no heed to the fact that leaving their valises — which carried all their meager worldly possessions — unattended on the ship likely meant they would never be seen again.
“Please, Papa!” his youngest daughter begged. “Can I bring along the necklace Mama gave me? It’s the only thing I have to remember Mama! It’s very precious to me… And, besides, it isn’t actually Shabbos yet.”
“My dear daughter,” the Rav replied in a warm, yet unyielding tone. “I’m also leaving behind my most valuable belongings. The ksavim of my father, Rav Chaim of Brisk, are all in my suitcase. You know how precious they are to me… But Shabbos is more special than all!”
When the girl heard that her grandfather’s ksavim would also be remaining on the ship, she calmed down. She understood that at this moment, it was truly impossible to take anything along.

Fundraising in the United States was no easy feat for the great Rosh Yeshivah, Rav Boruch Ber of Kaminetz. But when it became clear that there was simply no other way to keep his yeshivah afloat, the Rosh Yeshivah undertook the tiresome, challenging journey.
Reb Boruch Ber spent a Shabbos in the most frum shul available, one that had a proper, kosher mechitzah for the ezras nashim. After davening, Reb Boruch Ber delivered a rousing drasha on the topic of supporting Torah, calling on the mispallelim to pledge their support of his yeshivah. The Yidden in the shul were indeed moved and promised to give an astronomical sum for those days — two thousand dollars.
It seemed like a successful fundraising venture, until… Immediately after Maariv on Motzei Shabbos, the kehillah presented the Rosh Yeshivah with a check made out in the amount of $2,000. They felt a sense of pride and satisfaction. To everyone’s shock, however, Reb Boruch Ber took the check and
To everyone’s shock, Reb Boruch Ber took the check and ripped it to pieces
ripped it to pieces. He was worried that if the check was ready so soon after Shabbos, it meant it had likely been written out before the zman
He explained, “The yeshivah is indeed desperate for funds in order to remain open, but I don’t want to use money that may have caused chillul Shabbos. You see, for hachzakas haTorah, only the purest money will do!”
Menachem Daniel was a wealthy philanthropist, originally from Baghdad, who lived in Eretz Yisroel. One Shabbos afternoon, his butler appeared at the home of Chacham Salman Mutzafi, a venerated kabbalist who hailed from Baghdad as well.
He informed the family member who opened the door that he needed the Chacham to accompany him to his master’s home quite urgently.
When he heard that the Chacham was not home, the butler rushed to shul where he indeed found the great talmid chacham immersed in a sefer.
“My master requests that the Chacham come with me to his home. The British consul is due to arrive with a full entourage from England to sign on a deal.”
Rav Mutzafi gazed at the man sharply and called out in shock, “A business deal on Shabbos Kodesh?!”
After a moment’s thought, though, the Chacham stood up and prepared to accompany the butler to the philanthropist’s home. They walked into the elegantly appointed house and found the consul and his entourage already seated around a large table. Seeing the Chacham, regally dressed in his Shabbos clothes, they all welcomed him reverently.
Rav Mutzafi strode right over to the closet and lifted an ornate clock. “In another two hours, the sun will set, and a half hour after that, Shabbos will leave. Only then will I be able to join you to settle this deal. Until then, it is Shabbos, and as a Jew, I am obligated to protect its holiness.”
It was silent in the room. Everyone looked at each other in disbelief. But the consul immediately stood up and announced, “We very much value your faith and justness. We will wait here until your Sabbath is over.”
Rav Mutzafi thanked him and left the house, returning to his sefer in the beis midrash
When the Chacham arrived in shul, his face was shining and he was in a state of ecstasy. He announced for all to hear, “I have never felt such great kedusha as I felt during those moments, when I was mekadesh Shem Shamayim before ten honorable officials who agreed to wait more than two hours with the understanding that Shabbos is holier than anything else, and that the Jews guard its purity without compromise!”

Shabbos is our most special gift, and there is nothing in the world that is more important than guarding it’s kedusha.

Conflicting Reports on Potential Purim Road Repairs
Yellow signs that appeared in Boro Park warning of Purimday road repairs had area residents up in arms, but whether or not the work was actually scheduled remains unclear.
Signs bearing the official logos of the New York City Department of Transportation and the NYPD popped up on March 12. The signs warned that 51st Street would be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Purim and that the road would be classified as a tow-away zone during those hours, with no parking allowed. Coming on the heels of a DOT promise to avoid road closures and repairs on Purim day, the signs were particularly disturbing, sparking outrage among Boro Parkers.
Whether or not those signs were nothing more than Purim shtick remains unclear. BoroPark24 reported that community liaison Pinny Ringel was in touch with city officials to remediate the situation, and that, as of Taanis Esther, the scheduled work had been canceled. But a picture of the road repair sign posted by Boro Park Scoop yielded a DOT reply that painted the situation in a very different light.
“NYC DOT does not have any roadwork scheduled for this day and did not post this signage,” wrote the agency. “The agency did not authorize the use of its logo on this sign.”
Real or ruse, Boro Parkers were relieved that it was business as usual on 51st Street on Purim.
Residents Relieved as City Removes Abandoned Trucks
City officials have been cracking down on nuisance trucks in Boro Park, towing away several parked vehicles that haven’t been moved in weeks, freeing up valuable parking spaces and easing congestion, at least in a small way.
The NYPD’s Sheriff’s Department took to the streets at 11 a.m. on March 11, clearing away trucks without license plates that have been parked on area streets. Several tow trucks were brought in to remove the offending vehicles, which were also slapped with
tickets. Just hours later, NYPD officers were spotted removing a trailer that had been parked for some time in front of the Shomer Shabbos shul on 53rd Street and 13th Avenue.
Not surprisingly, area drivers weren’t happy with the slow downs as the vehicles were removed, but local residents applauded the move, having grown frustrated by the presence of the abandoned trucks. According to the NYPD, the two operations were unrelated and were conducted to address different concerns regarding the offending vehicles.
Camera Program To Catch Double-Parkers
The convenience of double parking may soon be overshadowed by its cost if a $35 million pilot program spearheaded by a Queens assemblyman is approved in Albany.
Assemblyman Steven Raga is advocating for New York State to sponsor the cost of 150 cameras to be installed throughout the city, reported Gothamist. Raga sent a letter to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie last week saying that manual enforcement by the NYPD has not kept pace with parking violations, leading to situations that have proven dangerous to drivers, bikers and pedestrians.
FRESHPICKS FORTHE SWEETEST SEASON
Raga’s plan would have cameras installed in parts of the city where double parking is rampant, and would also cover bike lanes, fire hydrants, and spots that are clearly marked as loading and no-standing zones. He said that the NYPD is known to ignore complaints about misuse of parking permits, and that the city rarely follows up on reports of illegally parked cars.
Department of Transportation spokesperson Anna Correa said in a statement that cameras have a proven track record of success. New York City already uses cameras to catch drivers who go through red lights, take advantage of bus lanes and ignore speed limits.
“While we are reviewing this legislation, NYC DOT supports expanding the use of automated enforcement to uphold the city’s parking regulations, which are essential to keeping streets clear, reducing traffic congestion and protecting New Yorkers on our roads,” said Correa.
Assemblyman Simcha Felder took an entirely different view of Raga’s proposed legislation.
“It’s entirely outrageous,” said Felder. “You want to save lives? You do what they’ve done for years successfully and saved lives. You have cops sporadically giving out summonses with points on your license.”
NYC Introduces Baby Boxes at Area Hospitals
Aiming to offer some much-needed assistance amid difficult financial times, New York City will be gifting new parents with essential baby items.
NYC Baby Boxes will be distributed at Kings County Hospital Center, which sees 7,000 new births each year. Filled with diapers, wipes, clothing, bathing and feeding supplies, and an official NYC onesie, the boxes will also be given out at two public hospitals in the Bronx, and another in Queens.
Mayor Eric Adams teamed up with NYC Health + Hospitals and the United Way of New York City for the initiative, which he announced in early March.
“Starting a family is one of the greatest joys in life and one that I was privileged to experience when my son was born, but it also has its challenges and financial stressors,” said Adams, who noted that the program will give “families the resources and tools they need to succeed at the very start of their journeys.”

chapter
TWENTY-TWO
Roiza couldn’t remember the last time she felt jealous like this. It was just something you outgrew as you aged. No one’s life was perfect, and no one’s life was awful. A pekele here, a pekele there. She sat on the rusty bench in their neighborhood park while the world walked. There were so many walking, running, jogging people, while she sat with her walker within arm’s reach, and her daughterin-law Blimi, Eli’s wife, sitting next to her and davening Babysitting her mother-in-law.
She suspected that this whole outing was a ruse to get her out of her own house so her kids could talk about her. She was the little girl eavesdropping, so let’s get a babysitter.
Of course, they’d planned it kindly. She had overheard Kaily talking to Perela about having everyone under one roof to discuss her care, and Yiddy had called her saying he had a large job in Monsey, so he would be around later. Then Eli’s wife called to invite her to the park. “The weather is gorgeous, shvigger. I didn’t leave my house in weeks. Maybe you want to join me?”
The bench dug into her back, and she felt the familiar tingling in her fingers.
Dance. Dance. Dance. There was nothing she
could do as her fingers began to dance. She’d learned to recognize the warning signal telling her fingers to start the dance, but there was no way to predict how long it would last. A minute, an hour, a day.
Shalva Epstein from down the block was power walking on the winding, leafy pathway. They’d gone to school together back in the Bronx, and they’d landed on the same Monsey block. They had kids the same ages, and they should be up to the same place about now.
Now Roiza sat, her hip throbbing from the uncomfortable position, while Shalva was wearing sneakers, her hands equally balanced on either side, her lips set in a firm, strong, non-quivering line, and there definitely wasn’t a child of hers solicitously nearby. Shalva even wore earbuds as she walked briskly around the path.
“Hi, Roiza!” Shalva called.
Roiza waved. She watched Shalva disappear around the bend. Shalva had sent over the most delicious apple pie when she heard about Roiza’s fall.
When she finished another round, she walked over to Roiza.
She removed an earbud. “Roiza! Good to see you! I just listened to a fascinating shiur on the parsha.”
Roiza tried remembering what parsha it was.
“Come, join me on my last round.”
“With my third leg?”
Shalva nodded. “I feel like I’m looking at myself from

last year,” she said. “You know I had a knee replacement last summer, right?”
Roiza hadn’t known.
“And now I walk every day. I was like you for months!”
A pekele here, a pekele there.
Blimi followed the exchange and motioned for Roiza to join Shalva. “Nu.” She pointed to her siddur to indicate that she was finishing up and would join them afterward.
Slowly, Blimi helped her up. Roiza moved her walker forward, the early November breeze prodding them along.
Shalva snuck her arm into Roiza’s, and with the added support, they started down the path.
“Roiza, you know what kept me going?” Shalva said carefully. “I just imagined myself being able to give back to my kids, who helped me so much.”
Roiza shook her head. “Shalva,” she whispered sadly, “this isn’t going to get better. It’s going to get worse and worse and worse. Until I’m an invalid on a feeding tube. Until I can’t talk, or think, or walk at all.”
Shalva stroked her hand.
“I have Parkinson’s,” Roiza said. “And it could affect everything. It already has.” She started crying. “I shake like that leaf over there. Some days, I just feel… like I want to stay in bed forever.”
Shalva walked silently beside her. The walker rattled on the uneven pavement, and Roiza almost missed a step. It was hard for her to walk and talk at the same time.
“Last year, at physical therapy, I met a bunch of women… like you,” Shalva said as they rounded the bend. “They meet, they dance, they sing. They love it. But mostly, they share.”
Roiza nodded. Her chin quivered, and her right shoulder jerked.
“Your kids are amazing,” Shalva continued. “But it’s good for you to be with women who really understand you.”
Roiza leaned heavily on Shalva. “I would like that,” she said.

Yiddy pounded on the table with more energy that all of his solar panels combined.
“Mommy is only going to be out for one hour. Let’s get started.”
Kaily looked at Perela and smirked. Eli eyed his brother with a mixture of amusement and antagonism. He hated being second to his younger brother.
Eli grabbed a handful of nuts and popped them into his mouth all at once. Probably to keep his mouth too full to answer. He was sweet, that brother of hers.
“Kaily, since you called this meeting, tell us what has to be discussed,” Yiddy said. He turned on his tablet and placed it in the center of the table.
“Money,” Kaily said simply.
“And the fact that she can’t be home alone,” Perela said. She launched into the story again. Yiddy stopped her.
“I get the point. We have a Zoom meeting in a minute with my friend. He’s the manager of a home healthcare agency. He claims it’s no big deal to sign up on CDPAP.”
“It’s that program that pays for family members to care for their disabled family member,” Kaily translated.
“I know how it works,” Eli said. “Blimi’s relatives who work with Chuni get paid like that.”
Yiddy connected his friend,
and Kaily took notes. Perela’s eyes glazed over the moment the CDPAP guy started talking. Eli resumed eating nuts.
It really didn’t seem like a big deal. A visit from a social worker, some follow-up, and then, hopefully, she would become the primary caregiver.
“From what I hear, I think your mother qualifies for full-time care.”
“How much can I expect to earn a month?” Kaily asked.
“Minimum wage multiplied by twenty-four hours a day. Give or take.”
She quickly did the calculations in her head and added it to her mother’s meager social security check. Food, utilities, aqua therapy. Kaily swallowed. It would be… just about enough.
Perela relaxed. “It’s more than you earned at your job, right?” she asked.
Kaily didn’t respond. Perela wanted to get rid of the guilt she was carrying since she heard Kaily quit; Kaily wasn’t going to help her.
When the guy disconnected, Kaily jumped in.
“Mommy needs a job,” Kaily said.
Eli sputtered, bits of nuts spraying the air, and Perela looked at her like she lost her marbles.
“She can’t even wash her hands,” she said.
“We know,” Yiddy said. “I think you mentioned it today.”
Perela looked wounded.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Kaily said. “I don’t mean opening a business or becoming a pilot. But any meaningful occupation. She’s going crazy from sitting home with her thoughts all day. She needs to be busy.”
Perela nodded. “Kaily is right.”
“The hydrotherapist recommended this right away. She claimed that giving her meaning in her life will keep her motivated and healthier,” Kaily explained.
“But she doesn’t even know how to turn on a computer. Let alone type,” Eli said. “I would have no problem giving her some of the seforim I’m working on. But she can’t.”
“And her hands shake,” Perela said needlessly.
“Let’s think what she can do,” Kaily said.
“Talk, obviously,” Perela answered.
Kaily tilted her head. “She can talk, but it’s not always easy for her. She gets hoarse easily.”
“But meanwhile, she can talk. She can make phone calls, then,” Yiddy said authoritatively. “I could use a telemarketer.”
“Are you kidding?”
“Not at all. She’ll keep busy, and if she gets a client, hakol revach.”
“And from all the money she

earns, we can install the handicapaccessible bathroom,” Kaily said cynically. “But seriously, it has to happen asap. We need a roll-in shower by tonight. We should’ve done it before she even came home. I don’t know what we were thinking.”
“But a handicap-accessible bathroom will cost thousands of dollars,” Yiddy said.
And you have it, Kaily wanted to say.
“Why did Tatty cash out his life insurance policy?” Yiddy grumbled. “It would’ve been more than enough.”
Eli stilled.
“Tatty cashed out his life insurance?” Kaily asked, narrowing her eyes. She’d never heard of such a policy. “Why did he do that?”
Eli glared at Yiddy with fire in his eyes.
“Never mind,” Yiddy said.
“When did he cash it?” she pressed. It was so not like Tatty to be careless about such a thing.
“Well, for the weddings,” Yiddy answered vaguely.
Perela’s wedding? My wedding? Fifteen years ago?
Perela looked bewildered, but Eli and Yiddy were still at war with their eyes.
It hit Kaily suddenly. Not their weddings. Chaim and Gedalya’s weddings.
“Oh…” she whispered. So that’s where the money had come from.
None of her siblings met her eyes.
“It’s fine,” Yiddy quickly said. “I’ll pay for the bathroom. You can hire someone today if you want.”
Kaily stared at the patterned tablecloth.
She had wanted to say so much at this meeting. How it wasn’t fair to rely on her so much, how badly she needed to shop with Sruly. How she hadn’t bought herself a thing to wear, and the wedding was in two months.
But all of the words she had wanted to say stayed stuck in her throat.
They were right to leave it all on her. She owed her mother more than all of them combined.

A SLICE OF PESACH WEEK 1 OF 4
NOTES:
If using homemade potato starch, make sure it’s completely dry before using it in your baking.
If you own a heavy-duty mixer, you can bake the following cakes in one bowl by adding yolks to the beaten snow, and then proceeding with the rest of the ingredients.
COFFEE NUT TORTE
This is an all-time Pesach staple.
INGREDIENTS
11 eggs, separated
1½ cups sugar, divided
¾ cup potato starch
6 oz. ground walnuts or filberts
1 T. coffee dissolved in 2 tsp. hot water
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat whites with half of sugar.
2. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining ingredients, and fold gently into the egg whites.
3. Pour batter into a non-disposable twopiece tube pan. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
SPONGE CAKE WITH WINE CHATEAU
This light and fluffy cake served with chateau and fruit is a Hungarian delicacy.
CAKE
9 eggs, separated
1 cup plus 2 T. sugar, divided
1 cup plus 2 T. potato starch
1 T. lemon juice
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat egg whites. Add half a cup of the sugar, and continue beating until stiff.
2. In a separate bowl, beat yolks with the rest of the sugar until thick and light in color. On low speed, add potato starch and juice. Carefully combine with whites.
3. Pour into a two-piece tube pan or two medium-sized loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour in a tube pan, or 45 to 50 minutes in loaf pans.
CHATEAU
3 eggs, separated
½ cup sugar
½ cup sweet white wine (I use Cream White Concord)
DIRECTIONS
1. Place yolks and sugar in a 4-quart saucepan. Beat with whisk until thick and light in color. Add wine and continue beating. Add whites slowly while beating vigorously. Constant beating is the trick to prevent eggs from curdling.
2. Turn on flame, and bring to a boil while beating the entire time. Remove from flame, and beat for a bit longer. Serve immediately.
Note: Chateau is very delicate and must be prepared right before serving.

1¾ cups sugar
1 cup oil
4 eggs
TOPPING
2 T. chopped filberts
2 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Toast the filberts for 10 minutes, then let them cool.
3. Transfer the filberts to a bowl. Mix them with potato starch and ground almonds until combined. Add sugar and mix.
4. In a separate bowl, mix the oil with the eggs, and then add this to the dry ingredients.
5. Kneed the biscotti until a smooth dough forms.
6. Divide the dough in three. Form three loaves on a cookie sheet.
7. Mix the topping ingredients, and sprinkle them onto the loaves.
8. Bake the biscotti for 40 to 45 minutes. Allow to cool (the biscotti will break if sliced while warm).
9. Once the biscotti has cooled, slice each loaf into approximately 18 slices.
10. Optional: For more crispy biscotti, preheat the oven to 250°. Lay the slices flat on a baking sheet, and toast for 10 minutes.
Note: If using packaged filberts, use 6 oz. chopped filberts and 6 oz. ground. If using whole nuts, chop them in a food processor until they are mostly ground, with some pieces remaining for texture.
Tip: For perfectly shaped biscotti, divide the recipe among three 10-inch loaf pans. After baking, cut each one into 12 slices.

C.G. HOFFMAN
Everything about the United States of America is oversized. The land stretches from sea to shining sea, encompassing four time zones on continental America and six if you include Alaska and Hawaii. Climates range from the steamy tropical to the frozen tundra (with deserts in between). Americans were the first to embrace large-scale automobile travel. The exciting new technology matched the American ambition to be free and travel large. American sofas, American kitchens, American food portions and American sodas are bigger than in any other country. But the American love for bigger everything has also resulted in larger Americans: the American obesity epidemic costs the healthcare industry over $200 billion per year.
One American institution has taken Americans’ love for bigger and better, threw in the thrill of a good deal, and created a giant business that netted $249.6 billion in sales in 2024: Costco.
A CLUB AND A PHILOSOPHY
Costco opened in 1976 under the name Price Club. It catered mostly to businesses, offering prime goods at wholesale prices. The first store to open under the Costco name was in Seattle in 1983. It was a unique business model: People would pay an annual membership price, which allowed them to buy top-quality goods, often in bulk, at prices that were way cheaper than at other retail establishments.
One of the founders said, “Our operating philosophy has been simple. Keep costs down, and pass the savings on to our members.”
That philosophy has paid off. Today Costco employs some 304,000 people across the globe, and had a staggering 129.5 million members as of November 2023.
SUPERSIZED!
The first feeling that strikes a newbie on their first trip to Costco is universal: It’s so big. Everything about Costco is supersized. The average Costco warehouse measures about 140,000 square feet, which is roughly the size of two football fields. The shopping carts are oversized (all the better to fit those monstrous packs of Bounty paper towels and diapers, both of which a Yiddishe family always needs), the aisles are oversized, and the shelves can reach a whopping 40 feet tall.
Julio, an immigrant from communist Cuba, cried the first time he visited Costco. “This is too much. It’s just too much!”
He was overwhelmed by the things we take for granted, such as a bag of apples. He was stunned at the sheer variety and mammoth sizes of packaged meat, fruit and baked goods.
At the end of his visit he turned pensive, and said, “When I first arrived here in America, they said I was an alien. Now that I am here, I see that I really am an alien.”
While Costco’s business model may seem like it has a wholesale mentality, the crux of their success is their phenomenal customer service. Going to Costco is usually a fun experience, with free samples and product demonstrations providing some entertainment. Staff members are trained to be pleasant and to always try to accommodate the customers.
This February, one Costco shopper found a package of beef that was marked at a shocking 11¢. When the checkout clerk spotted what was obviously a mistake, she took it to the man-
ager. Amazingly, the manager stood by the sticker price, and announced it to be the customer’s lucky day. In addition to Costco’s rock-bottom prices, it’s customer-focused service like this that makes shoppers come back again and again.
Costco also tries to satisfy their customer base by offering region- or culture-specific items. Costco stores that are in heavily Jewish areas, for instance, will often boast a large selection of kosher food. Their extra-large Kedem grape juice bottles are legendary, but they offer so much more, often carrying seasonal items around Yom Tov time.
Similarly, Japanese Costco stores offer more sushi than, say, their British counterparts, where “jacket potatoes” (baked potatoes for the rest of us) are very popular. You’ll also find kielbasa and pierogies at Polish Costcos, and the olive selection at Spain’s Costco would rival any gourmet market.
HOUSES AT COSTCO?
LOW PRICES, HIGH STANDARDS
One of the key elements of their success is that Costco is not a cheap store. They just sell high-quality, name brand goods for less. Costco chairman Hamilton James says that Costco is “by no means a dollar store.” They are not at all like Walmart, which sells everything; they keep their product offerings selective by offering only high-quality products.
While you may think that Costco’s core membership must consist of middle-class earners trying to stretch their paychecks, you may be surprised to know that a considerable percent of Costco shoppers are from the highest income brackets. It’s not just plain folks who look for bargains; the rich love a good deal too. It’s these wealthy shoppers who consistently drive Costco to sell out its stock of high-end, luxury goods.
That’s why one of the more interesting areas where Costco has recently seen success is in the luxury market. While Costco may not be the first place you’d think to buy a diamond engagement ring, in recent years they have seen a boom in jewelry sales. Surprisingly, they’ve seen great success with their higher-end offerings, selling diamond rings as large as 10 carats and luxury pieces for $40,000 to $50,000. Due to their strict quality standards, their jewelry selection is famous for its quality; each piece is hand-inspected by expert gemologists, and all diamonds must meet GIA grading criteria.
With today’s uncertain economic climate, another interesting commodity at Costco has gained traction: gold bars. Some people feel safer investing their money in pure gold rather than keeping it in banks. Costco moves between $100 and $200 million dollars in gold bars
Costco has recently made forays into another market: housing. South Los Angeles may soon be the first place in the United States where you can actually live in Costco housing. Ground has recently been broken for a new Costco store in that underprivileged neighborhood, with plans that include 800 residential units on the upper floors. About 23% of the apartments will be reserved for low-income households, with the rest going to working families. The building will include a fitness center, community rooms, landscaping and a rooftop pool. And, of course, easy access to fresh food at — where else? — Costco!
each month. Sales are driven both by affluent Costco members or people who are simply suspicious of the economy.
Chairman James says that it’s the wealthy members who allow Costco to “do remarkable things.”
“Since the beginning,” he told Chief Executive magazine, “we’ve always known we could move anything in volume if the quality was good and the price was great — Rolex watches, Dom Perignon, 10-carat diamonds.”
In fact, a Porsche car dealer once displayed their cars in a Seattle Costco and sold out within a week!
THE LAND OF KIRKLAND
There’s one offering you’ll see a lot of at a Costco store: their store-brand Kirkland. The name comes from the city of Kirkland, the location of the company’s original Washington State headquarters. While they had by then moved to neighboring Issaqua, founder James Sinegal said, “Nobody could spell Is-
FUN FACTS ABOUT COSTCO
The smallest Costco in the world is in Juneau, Alaska. The largest is in Salt Lake City, Utah, which measures a whopping 235,000 square feet.
Costco sells 4 billion eggs per year.
Costco also sells over 1 billion rolls of toilet paper each year.
Even more impressively, Costco sells about 212 pounds of diamonds each year.
Costco sells half of the world’s cashews, supporting a staggering 2.5 million independent farmers.
Costco is one of America’s biggest car dealers.
The country with the highest percentage of Costco members might surprise you: It’s Iceland!
After the company realized that entrepreneurs were loading up planes with pallets of Costco goods to sell in Iceland at a markup, they decided to enter the Iceland market.
No ID on you? Some airports might accept your Costco membership card as ID.
The Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Costco location has special parking reserved for horses and buggies.
The layout of Costco stores has a very specific strategy. Common necessities, such as light bulbs and paper towels, are regularly relocated, so that customers have to hunt for them, thereby exposing them to more products they might not otherwise have bought.
saqua!” So they stuck to Kirkland.
In the beginning, Costco sold many of their own products under different names, but then the company decided to unify all of their offerings under one name to stay consistent and to create a brand that is instantly recognizable.
The Kirkland brand allows Costco to offer customers highquality food items, with customers trusting the brand to consistently perform as well as or even better than other nationally sold brands. This strategy seems to have paid off; in the past year, Costco netted $58 billion in profits from Kirkland products alone.
Some Kirkland products are produced by nationally recognized, high-quality companies. For example, Kirkland brand baby diapers are actually manufactured by Huggies, giving you the same quality for less, and several Kirkland Signature coffee products are custom-roasted by Starbucks, even though they look generic. For even further savings, Kirkland items are often on sale, allowing customers to take advantage of steep discounts — and encouraging them to keep coming back for more supersized sales and savings.

What do you buy exclusively at Costco?
Diapers and wipes are staples we only buy at Costco. And we always fill up our gas tank there. Costco gas prices are unbeatable!
Five things that are always on our Costco list are…
Avocado oil, plastic cups, seltzer, water, paper towels, napkins and definitely eggs. (I know, I listed more than five.) With egg prices skyrocketing everywhere, these are a must-buy at Costco.
Interesting items I’ve picked up at Costco are… I’ve found great makeup and skincare products there.
We store our Costco purchases… Most items go into our pantry off the kitchen, toiletries are kept in the bathroom, and diapers and wipes are stored in one of the kids’ bedrooms.

What do you buy exclusively at Costco? Coffee cups, ground coffee, Ziploc bags and Motrin (where else can you find 3 for $10?).
Also, we only buy Costco’s brand gloves. My cleaning lady introduced me to them before I was a member. She would buy them for me, and I would reimburse her.
Five things that are always on our Costco list are… Cherry tomatoes, peppers, tissues, coffee cups, and of course, disposable gloves.
I would love to buy more produce, but everything in Costco is sold in bulk, and my kids don’t eat that much fruits and veggies. I once mistakenly grabbed a branch of four tomatoes on the vine, only to discover at checkout that they’re sold by the box.
Lesson learned!
One thing I don’t buy at Costco is…
Gas. We usually do our Costco shopping on Sundays, when there’s a line of cars snaking along at the gas station. Although their gas is definitely cheap, my husband believes that time is money as well.
An interesting item I’ve picked up at Costco is… A pair of pants for my husband. My husband was really excited with the quality, fit and price, which called for another trip to stock up on more.
We store our Costco purchases… We store our purchases either in the basement or on the top shelf of the pantry closet.

What do you buy exclusively at Costco?
Garbage bags, 9x13-inch foil pans, Kirkland detergent pods, water bottles, shelled pistachios. If we run low on any of these items, a Costco run is an emergency.
Five things that are always on our Costco list are…
Tissues, water bottles, walnuts, grape juice and hot cups.
An interesting item I’ve picked up at Costco is… A nutribullet. After we bought it, we were obsessed with smoothies for a while, until it broke a few years later.
Another interesting thing we found — and didn’t purchase! We said shelo asani goy instead — was octopus meat. It was a whole octopus, packaged in plastic, and it was all my kids could talk about for a while.
We store our Costco purchases… We store some items upstairs in the hall closet, and some in the garage.
A tip for shopping at Costco… Beware of produce from Eretz Yisoel. Those fruits and vegetables can only be eaten if terumos and maasros were taken.

AVERAGE BILL AT COSTCO: The orders magically add up; I guess metzias accumulate.
What do you buy exclusively at Costco? Detergent and flushable wipes.
Five things that are always on our Costco list are… Bounty, Tide, Downy, Honey Nut Cheerios and shampoo. I used to buy fresh strawberries from there, but since the bug-checking issue came up, I’ve stopped. Their nuts are also incredibly fresh.
Interesting items I’ve picked up at Costco are… I bought some fantastic Purim costumes there, and I’ve had great success with their swimwear; they sell great Speedo bathing suits.
We store our Costco purchases… We stock some items upstairs, but the bulk gets stored downstairs — yes, I certainly get my exercise that way!
A tip for shopping at Costco… It’s wise to plan your trips. I passed this morning at 8:15, when the doors only open at 8:30 a.m., and there was already a line from the door to the corner.
SURY GLUCK
What do you buy exclusively at Costco?
Parchment paper, paper towels, Motrin, Kirkland detergent and K-cups for the Keurig — those are essential!
Five things that are always on our Costco list are…
Water, water bottles, a box of Gushers (yes, I have a sweet tooth), grapes and eggs. The price for two dozen eggs at Costco is $8 to $9, and they’ll likely stay on my Costco essentials list for a while.
Interesting items I’ve picked up at Costco are…
I treated my girls to rocking/foldable traveling chairs, which were a popular hit in camp. I also got an air fryer and my famous cookie jars, which are permanent fixtures on my counter.
We store our Costco purchases…
Our Pesach kitchen, which is off our regular kitchen, serves as a great storage closet. The attic is also a great place for bulk items.
ON STOWING AND STORING
The art of being a Costco shopper lies in storage. How can one effectively categorize and organize all those bulk buying treasures? Hear from organizer Charny Brodt of Dott.org on how to excel at the game of “Costco Tetris.”
Regardless of your available storage space, Charny advises to always shop with a list. If lists aren’t your thing, consider taking photos of your current inventory to identify what you need, preventing overbuying.
For those fortunate enough to have a dedicated Costco closet:
Divide your closet into zones, creating separate categories for toiletries, food and paper goods.
Arrange your purchases based on priority. For example, keep cups, plastic cutlery and plates at accessible eye level, while napkins and tissues can be placed on higher shelves.
Store cases of water and juice on lower shelves. You can remove them from their boxes and line them up to create a neater and more spacious appearance. If space is limited, stack the cases for a symmetrical look, placing frequently used items on top for easy access.
If storage is tight:
Avoid over-shopping. Instead, make more frequent shopping trips as your supplies dwindle.
Look for a spot in your home for a freestanding closet to store your purchases in a functional and smart way.
If that’s not feasible, ensure your Costco items are placed appropriately from the start. For example, divide toiletries between the bathrooms, and place pantry items directly on pantry shelves.
An additional useful strategy is to create an “Overstock/Miscellaneous Bin” for your extras. However, avoid placing this in a primary area where you need to access everyday items; keep it higher up or in a less accessible spot.
Reach out to Charny to receive a 10% discount on a Costco closet session with mention of this article!
TOBY GOLDMAN MINDY BOCHNER

My bills are never under $300. It’s a very buying atmosphere, with everything being sold in bulk, leading to larger purchases.
What do you buy exclusively at Costco?
Panasonic cordless phones, batteries, garbage bags and laundry detergent.
Five things that are always on our Costco list are… Shredded cheese, fruits, water, toilet paper, Drizzilicious, and now, of course, eggs.
What do you buy exclusively at Costco?
Diapers, wipes, tissues, toilet paper, paper towel and gloves, which are perfect for sensitive skin.
Five things that are always on our Costco list are…
Meal Mart chicken nuggets top the list. Yes, they come in huge bags, but those are the suppers my kids actually eat, and they take only fifteen minutes to prepare in the Betty Crocker.
Cherry tomatoes, mini cucumbers, water and cereal are also staples.
Eggs would be on my Costco list, too, if I got there early enough!
Interesting items I’ve picked up at Costco are… Replacement windshield wipers and Aquaphor cream. The price of a big container of cream is incomparable, even to stores like Target and Walmart. Their towels are also high quality.
We store our Costco purchases…
We have an upstairs closet where we clear two shelves for tissues, toilet paper and paper towels, while bulk items are stored in the garage.
A tip for shopping at Costco… Costco has become really strict about ID cards. I once went shopping with a toddler, two kids and an overstuffed wagon, only to be stopped because I was using my husband’s ID instead of my own. There went my shopping trip. It was a humbling experience.
Interesting items I’ve picked up at Costco are… I bought three weekday tops there a while ago, and even if they’re out of style now, I still wear them as house tops since they’re so comfortable. My super absorbent rainy-day rug and my watch are also from Costco.
We store our Costco purchases… I keep my purchases in the basement, where we have a large closet nicknamed “the Costco closet.”
A Costco drawback:
Finding parking can be quite a challenge, and the checkout lines often extend out the door. They’ve also implemented more rules regarding their return policy. However, shopping at Costco remains very convenient, and you’ll still find me there.

Driving on the road is usually a pretty uneventful affair, but every now and then, a fantastic disaster makes the journey a bit more interesting.
We all hate driving next to trucks on the highway, trying not to think too hard about what would happen if it the truck would topple over, and not to get dizzy by the illusion that makes it feel like you’re suddenly moving backward, but the trucks we pass on the highway can sometimes be carrying rather unique cargo. And what happens when some of these trucks are inevitably involved in accidents? Well…
IDY PERL
CHOOSE YOUR SAUCE
Do you prefer your pasta with tomato sauce or white sauce? Well, two truck spills only a day apart might give you a new perspective on this very serious and delicious dilemma.
On August 29, 2022, a truck carrying tomatoes was involved in a chain reaction accident on the I-80 in Vacaville, California. The thousands of tomatoes created a rather slippery situation on several of the highway lanes, and traffic was closed down for a couple of hours while crews worked to clean it up.
Only a day later, in a different part of the country, another saucy disaster occurred. A truck on the I-55 in Memphis, Tennessee, crashed into a wall and spilled delicious alfredo sauce all over the road. The accident happened at around 4:45 p.m., and cleanup lasted until late into the night.
People jokingly wondered if pasta sauce companies had launched a war and warned truckers carrying pesto sauce to quickly get off the road before they got pulled into the fray.
HEY! IT’S HAY!
In November 2022, motorists on the I-91 in Hartford, Connecticut, were met with quite the scene when a truck carrying bales of hay overturned and spilled all over the highway.
Police agencies had a heyday (pun very much intended) posting about it on social media, with the Connecticut State Police posting, “We’re going to ‘make hay’ with this post. Soon, this situation will be ‘baled’ out.” Not to be outdone, the local police posted, “So, hay, we ask everyone to allow crews to clean up this impromptu hayfield. Please, do not bring livestock to the ramp for a grazing lunch.”

MONKEY BUSINESS
The last thing motorists in Pennsylvania expected to see on the road were monkeys, but in January of 2022, that’s exactly what they found.
A trailer carrying 100 cynomolgus monkeys, small and very expensive monkeys used for medical research, collided with a dump truck on the highway, causing the crates of monkeys to spill across the road. Four of the monkeys got loose, and a wild goose-monkey chase took place as crew members tried to catch them. Local police issued a warning to residents not to attempt to catch the monkeys, and to let the authorities know if they were spotted. Eventually, all the monkeys were accounted for, and they were able to continue their journey.
GOATS AND SHEEP
Monkeys aren’t the only animals that have gone loose on the highway. On September 19, 2021, a truck carrying goats and sheep (who would’ve thought so many animals are traveling on the highway?) overturned in Normal, Illinois. Tens of goats and sheep fled the truck and were seen excitedly running up and down the highway, and nearby farmers and animal hospital staff came out to help coral the animals back into the truck. Thankfully, the livestock were all found and brought back to the trailer without sustaining any injuries.
CHOCOLATE-DIPPED HIGHWAY
Chocolate is one of those things that’s good on practically everything: pretzels, fruit, ice cream, cake — the options are endless. On a road, however… not so yummy.
A massive chocolate spill occurred in Poland on May 9, 2018, when a truck carrying hot liquid chocolate spilled its contents across six lanes of highway traffic. The chocolate quickly started cooling off and hardening on the pavement, making cleanup quite a challenge.
DRIVING ON THE INFLUENCE
Don’t drink and drive… but what if the drink is all over the road?
Just a few weeks ago, on February 16, a semi-truck carrying a large amount of beer overturned onto the median on a Florida highway near Tampa when the driver attempted to exit into a rest area. State troopers were dispatched to assist the driver and clean up the mess. Authorities at the scene said that over 44,000 pounds of beer had to be cleaned up.
CRACKS ON THE PAVEMENT
Recent bird flu outbreaks and inflation have put eggs high up on the list of expensive staples. As if the shortage wasn’t bad enough, a whole truckload of them were recently ruined in a very unfortunate accident.
In what is perhaps the most expensive truck spill, at least in the current market, an egg delivery truck carrying this extremely precious and fragile cargo crashed into a wall on the freeway near East Los Angeles on February 3, 2025. The crash caused many precious eggs to crack, covering the road in egg yolks and shell debris.
Next time you’re on the road, keep an extra eye on the trucks you pass along the way, and say a little tefillah that they should keep their cargo safely inside. You don’t want to find yourself driving through a puddle of dried chocolate!

Meshers
I don’t mind washing dishes (though I do like procrastinating the task or, better yet, delegating it), but what I really dislike is dealing with food residue. I find it especially messy to clean strainers that have become super attached to little pieces of no-longer-edibles. These strainer filters stretch to easily slip onto strainers, where they stay put. Once in place, they catch all the little bits of food, after which they can simply be discarded. I also use it when I want to discard something like soup that is part liquid and part solid. Liquid goes down the drain, and the rest is collected in the mesher, which gets slipped off and dumped.
HOW
NIFTY!
It’s tough not to love this stuff
SHEVY HOLLANDER
It’s the time of year that we are super focused on our homes, the running of it, and the stuff we have accumulated in its confines.
Now may not be the ideal time to acquire stuff we don’t absolutely have to have, but maybe the new space this year’s Pesach purge has made available, there’s room to make life a little more practical.
Regardless, who can resist reading about the creativity and ingenuity of fellow humans?
Scooter Luggage
Traveling with kids is an idea so daunting, I have done it only in moderation and when absolutely necessary. But if you’re someone who does so more often, whether it’s by obligation or by choice, these suitcases that convert into scooters are great travel companions.
With these scooters, kids can scoot down the airport hallways while carrying their luggage, making the transport of all that baggage, and all the kids, that much easier.
Just ask my sister, the owner of several of these suitcases, who’s also a lot braver than I am.
Toy and Dirt Vacuum
One evening some years ago, I was sitting on the playroom floor, sorting a day’s worth of toys into their designated containers. As my arms and eyelids grew heavier and heavier, I fantasized about a vacuum device with differently sized holes, each one sucking in another type of toy into its compartment.
Now, I’ll admit my fantasy was a little more effective, but when I came across this toy vacuum, I couldn’t believe that someone had picked my brain. This vacuum is designed to pick up little toys (if your kids are into Lego, you know why this is super helpful), and it separates the toys from the dust and the dirt.
I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on my wishlist.
Flat Water Bottle
While in theory I love cool water bottles and all things hip and hydrating, I prefer my water bottles (and especially the straws) disposable. But if I’d go with something that needs care and cleaning, I’d choose this flat version for on the go. It fits so beautifully into a bag or purse without bulging, and it’s kind of suave-looking, too!
Spice Carousel
When I moved into my current home, I splurged on a home organizer until the first two rooms were done. That’s when the project was “put on hold” so the coffers could get a chance to be refilled. A few years have passed since then, and the kitchen I had such high hopes for is functional but not optimized.
For some reason, the spices landed in a deep, narrow cabinet too far from the cooking area, which meant cooking always involved a scramble and a hunt to find the spices I needed.
When I came across this spice organizer, the fondness I had for it was instant — so much so that it even got toveled within 24 hours of purchase. In my home, that says a lot.
Even though this carousel only comes with four-ounce jars, it works for me. I keep it on the counter and feel so posh cooking!
Soda Can Lids
Surely I’m not the only one who finds myself en route with an open soda can that a kid absolutely wants to save and wonder why I ever did something so thoughtless as bringing along something that has no way of being closed again. And open soda cans, well, we all know what they do.
These lids easily convert soda cans into bottles, making them both portable and protected. (If you remember to bring them along, that is.)
Battery Organizer
For anyone who can get their hands on batteries only when they don’t need them, this is a great way to catch all those stray batteries. The batteries are stored by size so you can keep an eye on your stock, and a battery tester is included to ensure that you’re only keeping batteries that still have juice.
Did I try it? Not yet. Will I? I hope to by the time this article is in print.
Portable Water Heater
Coffee on the go? Absolutely! I became friends with this small yet mighty piece of equipment when I recently traveled and didn’t have a kosher kitchen close enough to my lodgings to keep me feeling secure about my access to coffee.
This immersive liquid heater is just a few inches tall and boils a cup of water (or any liquid) in under two minutes. And what’s interesting is that it’s been around for years. How did I not know about this product in the days I’d lug around instant hot water kettles for baby formula bottles on the go? Well, now we all know!

Reb Meilech’s Shidduch
רדא
– a date that has been the starting point of so many yeshuos… A date popularly attracting Yidden from all walks of life to a little town in Poland where the great Rebbe Reb Elimelech was laid to rest.
On א רדא אכ' three years ago, a new name appeared on the list of Tehillim Kollel’s messengers who traveled to Lizensk to daven at the tzion on the day of the yahrtzeit.
Shimon’s father noticed the ad o ering an alternate way for Yidden to daven in Lizensk – without getting on a plane. Tehillim Kollel would be on site, and was taking along the requests of so many Yidden in need.
This is it! After davening so much and trying all sorts of segulos, Shimon’s father was convinced this would be the nal string that would break the monotonous pattern of quiet, quiet, no, quiet, quiet, no. You see, life was passing Shimon by, and somehow, his bashert had not yet appeared. Hardly any names were redt, and the ones that did come up each ended in the painful “no.”
What do you know?
It didn’t take long for it to be noticeable that the te llos were accepted on high! Shimon was matched with a wonderful kallah, and a date was set for their engagement celebration – רדא אכ'!

We’re back! Time to roll up our sleeves and tackle some of the busiest rooms in the house.
My husband always says that anything that happens before Rosh Chodesh has no connection to Pesach. He’s probably right, but there may be a piece he’s missing. For me, Pesach prep provides the perfect opportunity to prove my balebusta prowess.
Nonetheless, I learned a lesson five years ago. Remember Covid?
That year, many of us learned to humbly welcome Pesach k’halacha, without all the extras that make our homes feel so clean and fresh. Pride aside, we were happy when Yom Tov arrived, despite some dropped balls.
BAILA GOLDMAN
If you’ve made Pesach as many times as I have, baruch Hashem, you’ve probably come across some years when it was clearly ratzon Hashem for more balls to be dropped than you usually like. Wedding, new baby, a move to a new home… If this year is that kind of year for you, forget the stress. Accept a chametz-free, 100% mehudar Pesach, sans organized toy closet, graciously!
The very first year I made Pesach, we welcomed a new baby one week before Yom Tov. An adam gadol my husband spoke to at the time made a comment that still rings in my ears as I draft my to-do list every year: “Making Pesach is not the bear they make it out to be…”
It gave me the freedom of choice: to choose to do whatever I could, and to choose to be okay with less than usual.
So, let’s get started!
Join me in the playroom.
READY FOR SOME INSPO?
I love cleaning to music; it makes things go that much quicker. Sometimes I also find a friend or sister to schmooze with while I scrub my stuff. Otherwise, I enjoy using the time to listen to a good shiur that puts me in Yom Tov mode and reminds me why we’re actually doing all this. Take advantage of any quiet you have as long as the kids are in school, and get the most out of every moment!
If your house is like mine, then on a good day, when you walk into the playroom, there are several toys (read: 75% of the toy closet) scattered across the room.
PLAYROOM
But did you notice that most of the toys are just there but aren’t actually being enjoyed?
Kids inevitably gravitate to the same few sets of toys — think Magna-Tiles, Clics, mentchies. The specialty toys my kids got as Chanukah gifts or for afikomen, on the other hand, get taken down for play but don’t really get so much attention. So one year, I did an experiment. I removed all those toys and placed them in the back of a high, hard-to-reach shelf, and only brought them out on special occasions. It worked! Less mess, more interest.
I spoke with several experienced moms who shared the top ten toys that are actually worth stocking in your playroom’s accessible space:
Magna-Tiles
Clics
DUPLO and LEGO
Mentchies and furniture
Playmobil
Cars
Dolls, doll accessories, toy food
Dress-up clothes
Books
Puzzles and games, for older kids
This year, consider keeping your kids’ favorite, wellused toys handy, and put aside (or give away) all the rest. You’ll get less clutter in your closet and a neater play area.
(I do keep a handful of “extra” toys on lower shelves, and rotate each year when I reorganize for Pesach.)
PRO-TIP
When buying new toys, get more of the same — more quantity of your kids’ favorite toys, rather than smaller sets of a variety of toys. The kids will be thrilled with an expanded Magn-Tiles set, for instance. (Especially if you’re a Bubby! Your grandkids will love your playroom, and make space by gifting your kids with some of their old toys.)
Toys
Cleaning toys usually involves little helpers. Use damp shmattes for effective cleaning that’s also safe for children. Here are some tips on how to clean toys.
MAGNA-TILES MENTCHIES TOY FURNITURE CARS/TRUCKS
Mix mild soap with warm water.
Dip a shmatte inside and wring, leaving it damp.
Carefully wipe down each toy. This will remove oil and dirt, while keeping water out of these toys.
PRO TIP: For greater shine, use dishwashing soap in your warm water solution.
CLICS
TOY FOOD, DISHES DUPLO
Spread a towel on the floor.
Prepare one bowl with diluted soap, and a second bowl with warm water. Dip each toy piece into the soap, then into the water, and then leave on the towel to dry.
Before you start, remove any toy pieces that have tiny holes that can trap water, and use the damp shmatte method instead.
PRO TIP: Do this inside the bathtub! Spill some soap into a bath full of warm water, stir the toys around inside, and transfer it all to a towel when done. The dirty water will speak for itself.
BOOKS, GAMES AND PUZZLES
To me, cleaning the books is more of an organizing job — one I look forward to all year long!
Tape loose pages back inside books that are still in good-enough condition. Relegate those that have lost too many pages to the garbage pile.
Wipe cardboard books with a damp shmatte. (Especially important if you use them as a baby-feeding tool!)
I keep old magazines in file holders. When these get full, it’s a sign that it’s time to dump them or pass them on.
Adult books that you’ll never read again, but may be enjoyed by others, can be donated to a local library or given to your bookworm friend.
Games are a sore spot in my closet. Taped-up boxes of all shapes and sizes make it hard to keep a neat games shelf. One day, I hope to invest in uniform plastic game boxes.
DOLLS
Place dolls and stuffed animals in a mesh bag.
Cushion the load by washing along with towels or soft doll clothes.
Use a gentle cycle, with cold water only. Stuffed animals and doll clothes can go in the dryer, but keep those plastic dolls out!

Use a slightly damp shmatte to wipe down game boards and the insides of the game boxes.
Store little game pieces in Ziploc bags inside each box.
Sort boxes by size and/or by popularity and how often you pull them out.
When it comes to puzzles, first make sure they aren’t missing any pieces. Only keep puzzles that have all of their pieces. Then do the same as you did with the game boxes. Use a slightly damp shmatte to wipe out the insides of the boxes.
CRAFTS
The craft shelf! In our creative home, this means an assortment of things that may one day come to good use in some kind of project. When it comes to keeping these neat, it’s all about good storage. If something cannot be contained easily, get rid of it!
Designate a box (or more) for odds and ends. Sort in Ziploc bags inside.
Craft kits that are missing parts or are too boring to take out should go the way of overly-torn books.
Play-Doh, kinetic sand, or other crafts that may contain chametz — either in its ingredients or by being played with — should be placed in a cabinet or closet that will be sold with the chametz.
Bathroom and bleach. Ahh, the smell of a deep clean!
VANITY
Get rid of expired medications and any other toiletries that are simply taking up space.
If you’ll be selling the entire vanity, remove what you’ll need over Yom Tov. Otherwise, remove only the things you want to sell with the chametz
Check items you’ll want to use on Yom Tov to make sure they’re kosher for Pesach.
GROUT
Black or rusty stains are plain ugly. Here are some ways to get your grout looking clean and new!
Household bleach. This will clean and sterilize your grout. Don’t overuse bleach, though, as it can damage the grout.
Grout pens. These are affordable, easy and don’t involve any scrubbing. However, it’s more of a cover-up than a stain remover.
Steam cleaner with grout attachment. This means chemical-free cleaning!
DIY solution: Mix 1 tablespoon dishwashing soap, ½ cup baking soda, and ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide. Apply the solution to the grout, and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Scrub clean with a brush and rinse.
Toothpaste. Dab a dollop onto grout, let sit for several hours, and wash off.
PRO TIP: Test on a small area when trying something new. Methods may work differently on different surfaces.
SHOWER/TUB
Do you need all those soaps and shampoos? If you’re a soap-hoarder, try cutting your supply of bottles in the tub area.
If you have a hanging shower curtain, remove and wash in the wash machine.

DETERGENTS AND SOAPS
Take a look at your detergents and cleaning supplies stock. Any empty bottles? Unused brands? Toss! Organize those you’d like to keep. Wipe shelves dry before replacing.
DRYING RACKS, SHELVES
Wipe clean. This is a great time to get rid of the stray sock that somehow never met its pair and has been hanging around ever since.
DRYER
Clean the filter well.
WASHING MACHINE
Black stains on the gasket? It’s always best to keep the washing machine door open when not in use. But even so, you may be disappointed with the mold that somehow creeps inside.
Here some natural hacks:
Use 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water. Gently scrub off the mold. Rinse and dry.
Create a paste of lemon juice and salt. Apply and scrub well.
Mix good old dishwashing soap and water, and wipe liberally over the gasket. Make sure to run an empty cycle before using the machine again!
If you want to avoid scrubbing, you can try running a hot cycle with vinegar and water in the detergent dispenser. An appliance repairman once suggested I use lemon salt in the dispenser on an empty cycle.
Things are finally falling into place! Next week, we’ll be starting the kitchen and dining room. See you there!

WAIT, WHAT COMES BEFORE TWO? OR AFTER TWO?
TATTE! WHAT? WHY?!
TATTE! MISHA! I FINALLY FOUND YOU! BUT WHAT CAN I DO TO SAVE YOU?
JEWISH LIFE COMES FIRST. AND BESIDES, WHAT GOOD IS A TREASURE IF WE’RE TRAPPED IN HERE? THERE’S NO OTHER WAY OUT. WE’LL HAVE TO OPEN IT AT SOME POINT ANYWAY.
WAIT… WHAT’S THAT?
MISHA, OPEN THE GATE.
SMART CHOICE, KID.
RECAP: WHILE ESCAPING FROM A JAGUAR, THE RUBINOVS RUN INTO A HOUSE THEY FIND AND SLAM THE GATE SHUT. INSIDE, THEY FIND THE TREASURE! BUT THEN PEDRO SHOWS UP AND DEMANDS THAT THEY OPEN THE GATE.
THIS… IT LOOKS FAMILIAR SOMEHOW… WHERE HAVE I SEEN THIS WRITING BEFORE?
OH, WELL, IT DOESN’T MATTER NOW. HAND OVER THE TREASURE CHEST.
MICHAEL! MATISYAHU! COME OUT. I’M TAKING YOU HOME.
AND YOU — YOU’RE STAYING HERE TO ROT.
HEY! DON’T STEP ON THE BLACK TILES! THEY’RE SINKING!
WHO WOULD’VE THOUGHT THAT AFTER ALL THE TROUBLE THE RUBINOVS CAUSED ME, THEY’D ACTUALLY BE USEFUL SOMEDAY.
HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
PIETRO WILL SEAL THE ENTRANCE WITH EXPLOSIVES. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ESCAPING. LET’S SEE HOW YOU LIKE BEING LOCKED UP.
TATTE! THE CEILING IS SHAKING! IT REALLY WAS A TRAP!

SHEVY HOLLANDER
A LITTLE BIT OF SCIENCE WONDER
A 40-year-old Australian man is the first person to have been discharged from the hospital with an artificial titanium heart. It was implanted in November 2024. He lived with it for 100 days and then returned for a transplant when a heart became available for him. The first implant of the BiVACOR heart took place in the U.S. in the Texas Heart Institute in July 2024 when a 57-year-old man received the first titanium heart implant as a temporary solution while awaiting a donor. Since then, four more patients received their artificial hearts in Texas, but none of them left the hospital with it. While these hearts are now a temporary life-saving solution, doctors believe they have the potential to serve as permanent heart replacements in the future.

The first stretch limousine, often called a “big band bus,” is created by the Armbruster coach company in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The vehicle was designed to transport big band musicians and their equipment.
The common advice to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day has no scientific evidence to support it. Water needs are individual and can vary based on a given person’s activity level, climate and overall health. A person should listen to their body, drink when they’re thirsty and focus on staying hydrated. There is no specific amount that is ideal across the board.

As surprising as it seems, lighters came into being before matches did. The first lighter, Dobereiner’s lamp (named for its inventor), was invented in 1823, while the first friction matches were invented in 1826.

THE FAMOUS “ROYAL CLOTHING”
REOPENED AT THEIR MAGNIFICENT
NEW LOCATION IN BORO PARK TO
BETTER SERVE ITS REFINED CLIENTELE
Boro Park is buzzing with exciting news that the long-established, well-known “Royal Clothing” has relocated to a grand new venue in the heart of the heimish community. They will continue to offer the same high-quality men’s clothing as before, with the same loyal and distinguished service they are famous for, but now in an expanded and eyecatching new store.
Their golden reputation has been established over forty years, ever since R’ Avraham Schwartz opened it as the first chassidishe men’s clothing business in of Boro Park. At that time, he was a pioneer, bringing in a master bespoke designer, R’ Elazar Feig, who, together with him, set up the business. People from near and far, who understood the craft, came to observe and participate in the process of creating elegant bespoke
clothing, marveling at the exceptional care put into every detail to create a masterpiece of beauty.
Over the past 40 years, they earned the reputation as the first address to visit when looking for a durable and beautiful garment. The greatest rabbis and philanthropists chose this store, knowing that everything was crafted from the highest quality materials, ensuring the customer received the finest merchandise.
Today, the business continues on the same path, now managed by his son, R’ Yosef Schwartz, who upholds the same standard in outfitting the local community with the richest and finest garments. The specialty of “Royal Clothing” is not only that their garments are made from the finest materials by the most skilled tailors, but also their expertise in tailoring to the perfect measurements, ensuring
the best fit—one that is worn with pride and elegance. The attentive staff personally engages with each client, ensuring that everyone who walks into the store leaves highly satisfied.
Now, the long-awaited moment has arrived, as the business moved into a newly expanded space that will significantly improve and elevate the experience for its loyal clients.
An exciting addition at the new location is the inclusion of private VIP rooms for those seeking a more personal shopping experience. This will allow clients to focus on their orders in a peaceful and individualized setting.
Royal Clothing – true to its name, remains the number one address for royal, elegant clothing with regal service. Royal Clothing – for those that quality is priority!
ACTION ALERT: A FEW MINUTES OF VOTING SHAPE YEARS OF CHANGE
With the special election for City Council just days away, it is critical that we turn out to vote for Simcha Felder on March 25.
We are just weeks away from Pesach, and we know how busy this season is for every family. But taking just a few minutes to vote can make a difference for years to come. Elections are ultimately decided by those who show up and vote, and we cannot afford to sit this one out.
Simcha has always been a fighter for our community. He understands our needs and has a proven track record of delivering results. Whether it’s getting yeshiva parents door to
door transportation, advocating for safer neighborhoods, standing up for small businesses, or protecting our religious freedoms, we need a representative — someone we trust, with the experience needed — who will work tirelessly on our behalf at the City Council.
A strong turnout in this election will not only ensure Simcha’s victory but also give him a clear mandate to advocate for us in the City Council. When our community comes out in force, it sends a powerful message that our voices must be heard and our concerns must be addressed. This election is about more than
just one seat — it is about our and our kids’ future. This is our chance to strengthen our voice in local government at a time when it matters most for our community.
The strength of our representation in City Hall depends on us.
Voting is simple, quick and easy. The polls will be open from 6am to 9pm on Tuesday, March 25th.
Let’s stand together and make a difference. Do not let this moment pass. Make your voice heard. Every single vote counts. Vote for Simcha Felder on March 25 and help secure a brighter future for our community.
