MADE IN THE SHADE

(Re: Up to the Challenge, Issue 277)

Thank you so much for your doable, bite-size cleaning contest.

B. Goldman wrote that before washing walls one should wipe it with a dry rag first, just as you sweep a floor before washing it. This tip was so helpful, and I applied it to my window shades as well. I wiped the window shades with a dry paper towel first and then washed them down with a schmatte dipped in Mr. Clean. I never had such an easy time washing window shades before, and they are sparkling clean!

CHAG KOSHER — AND SAMEACH

(Re: Up to the Challenge, Issue 277)

Thanks for your Pesach cleaning schedule. I’m an old lady, and I’ve been around the block a few times. Let me share with your readers my two cents when it comes to Pesach cleaning.

First of all, any closet that will not be used on Pesach at all, we wash the floor inside it, close the door and put a sticker on it that says “muchar l’goy.” Done. Next.

We don’t declutter now. We do that in the summer. Sometimes we do it in Shevat. We don’t do it now.

Master bedroom: I don’t take everything out of the closet. The walls don’t have chametz stuck to them, and neither does the rod. This is not the time to decide whether or not to give away that skirt. The skirt is not chametz, and it can live in your closet for a few more weeks. If that’s what you’re doing, that’s why you’re so worn out. You are doing things that have nothing to do with Pesach.

Perfumes, makeup, anything you need to sell, put a muchar l’goy sticker on the night table, and put those items in the night table. From now until Pesach, keep it in the night table. Now you saved yourself a job; you’re not cleaning the night table drawers either.

Kids bedrooms: We’re not throwing away socks. Remove the clothes, wipe down the shelves, put it all back. The kids’ prize boxes? Put it into one of the closets that you’re selling. Done.

Beds and furniture: I do move and wash furniture, and turn over the mattresses and vacuum the bed frames. That’s because anything you are going to use on Pesach has to be thoroughly cleaned and checked. Walls should be washed where there is food stuck to them. I never saw a cookie stuck to the ceiling molding. Scuff marks on the baseboards are not chametz. Forget about

it if you don’t have the time or the koa’ch or the money for the cleaning lady.

There’s no chametz in the linen closet. Take everything out carefully, check for chametz and wipe the shelves if you must. You want to refold everything to military precision standards? Not today, bubbele

That’s how we make Pesach in our house. Maybe you should run another column on modified Pesach cleaning for people who don’t have ko’ach, patience, or money to do that crazy Pesach cleaning that exhausts us.

As I said, I’m an old lady, and I used to do it that way. Well, I don’t anymore. I concentrate on the actual removal of chametz, and maybe freshening up the parts of the house that will be seen and used on Pesach. My mixer does not get the toothpick and Q-tip treatment. It’s sold to the goy; so what am I selling if there’s not a speck of chametz left on it to sell?

I recommend you reevaluate the program you’re printing. It will save a lot of yinge veibelech a lot of work.

Thank you,

THE GREATEST COVER UP

You featured a great collection of handy items. Here’s my contribution: I bought this amazing product, and it keeps lebens from splattering all over when my kids eat it. You stick a straw through the hole, and everything stays clean. Enjoy, and you’re welcome.

CATALYST FOR CHANGE

(Re: Give In Order To Get, Issue 274)

My husband and I were both experiencing issues at work, and it seemed like we were both going to lose our jobs, and by extension, our entire income.

Older and Wiser

That week, as I was flipping through your magazine, I read the beautiful stories you printed about maaser. Now, although we were giving tzedakah, probably more than the exact amount of maaser, we didn’t really have an exact cheshbon. We made a commitment to work on this, and the very next day, we opened an account specifically for maaser

Shortly thereafter, we both saw a positive change shifting in our favor.

Thank you, The Boro Park View, for being the shaliach! A Local Family

DO THE MATH

(Re: Paying the Fifth, Issue 272)

Thank you for the series on giving a chomesh of income to tzedakah, as opposed to maaser. It should be a zechus for your staff that you print such ruchinus’dik content.

There were three halachic points that I don’t think were mentioned in the series. The first one is that with both maaser and with chomesh, it is preferable to do the math and separate the exact amount designated as maaser (or chomesh), and not just approximate or round up the number. (All “extra” money given is considered tzedakah, which is a different mitzvah.) However, some authorities do say it is fine to approximate.

Second, many halachic authorities say that when giving chomesh, you must first give exactly 10%, and then give exactly another 10%, as opposed to separating a fifth (20%) at the outset. This is one explanation for the double lashon of “aser te’asrenu.”

Last, there are different opinions as to how to calculate the second 10%. Some say you should separate 10% from the amount that remains after maaser is taken, and not off of the original total. For example, according to this opinion, if you earned $100, you should first separate 10% from the total as maaser, which is $10. For chomesh, you separate another 10% from the remaining $90, which is $9.

Everyone should consult their own halachic authority; this letter is just to make people aware of what the issues may be.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Some post-Purim reflections:

My preschool-aged daughter received many mishloach manos from family, friends and her morahs. Each bag contained between four and five nosh items. This amounted to a ridiculous amount of nosh for such a young girl. I find it ironic that the same mothers who were fussing over and arranging their children’s mishloach manos before Purim spend the week after Purim begging and bargaining with their kids to give up some of it. Wouldn’t we all be better off if we limit the kids’ mishloach manos to just one nosh? You can put in a drink or healthier option for the second food.

Once we’re on the topic, if you send dairy food items in your mishloach manos, please make sure they are clearly and prominently labeled as dairy. This can prevent much agmas nefesh

Your Daughter’s Friend’s Mother

Clean Smarter

IS THE ONE HOUSEHOLD CHORE YOU ALWAYS LEAVE FOR THE CLEANING LADY, IF YOU HAVE ONE, OR WISH YOU COULD, WERE YOU TO HAVE ONE?

No specific chore. It’s the idea that she comes that keeps me cool, calm and collected until she actually shows up.

I thank Hashem for my cleaning lady every day. The best part is that she does my mending and ironing, in addition to cleaning my bathrooms, refrigerator and entire house.

I give my cleaning lady my entire house besides washing laundry — yes, she also does the folding and putting away. And if I’m missing a shell, I know whom to ask…

I equate cleaning ladies with being medically sick. I am grateful I don’t need one!

I hate having another adult underfoot, and I don’t mind housework, so I’m happy to do the routine cleaning on my own. I only take a cleaning lady before Pesach to do the deep cleaning, which requires physical strength. I’m happy when she comes and even happier when she leaves.

I used to give laundry folding to my cleaning lady because I found it boring and tedious, and my friend scolded me for spoiling my cleaning lady. In terms of what I avoid, cleaning the bathroom is one chore I definitely leave for her.

Washing strollers, as they constantly need a “powerwash.” Between my multiple strollers, she has one to tend to at every visit.

Anything that involves too much stretching and bending like cleaning the oven and fridge. We need our ko’ach for cooking.

Right now, I’m baruch Hashem less dependent on my cleaning help than I’ve been in the past. I try to have all my laundry done when she comes so she can fold and put the clothing into appropriate rooms. I also schedule my cooking storms for the night before she comes so she can put my kitchen back in order.

The one chore I leave for the cleaning lady is hanging up wet laundry. For some reason, both my kids and myself dislike this chore the most.

I don’t love having a cleaning lady in my house, but having help with the important basics keeps me sane. I would definitely outsource changing linen, but ironing is a waste of time even for the cleaning lady.

Changing linen! I find this task very strenuous, especially since I’m very short and there’s only so far my hands can reach.

I always leave the stovetop for the cleaning lady. When it’s dirty, I know it’s time for a cleaning lady, and of course, I push in all the big cooking right before the cleaning lady comes (compote, soup).

All the toys and pacifiers from under the bed wait patiently for the cleaning lady. We have enough to go around until then.

Ironing is something I leave for my cleaning lady, except in the summer when I want to make sure the stains come out before the clothes are ironed. I also enjoy cooking for Shabbos on Thursday and having my cleaning lady clean up after me. A Yiddishe mamme needs to reserve her energy for her crew.

First of all, I thank Hashem for cleaning ladies; I cannot do without them. My fridge/ freezer, ovens and bathrooms I always leave for the cleaning help. If she calls in sick, I push these off for the next time she comes, and we survive until then.

I leave the bathtub for the cleaning lady to clean. As I have gotten older, I find it difficult to do strenuous work. Since my cleaning lady comes on Fridays at noon, she cleans the sinks and does the kitchen mopping for me.

Changing the linen. Fresh linen for me is a treat. If I need to do it myself, then it loses its value. When my cleaning help does it, I feel pampered.

I wish I could leave the bathroom for the cleaning lady. My problem is that I like work done perfectly, and I have yet to find a lady that can do it as well as I can. So in the meantime, I’m left doing it myself.

I used to dread washing the bathtub and tiles, but since I discovered that the magic eraser sponge does the job, it’s a breeze.

PARSHAS PEKUDEI

An Accounting

In this parsha, the weights of every donation for the Mishkan are accounted for. Moshe Rabbeinu lists what was done with every piece of gold, silver or copper.

The pasuk says, “Eileh pekudei hamishkan, mishkan ha’eidus — these are the numbers of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of Eidus” (Shemos 38:21).

Rashi points out that the word “mishkan” is repeated twice, alluding to the two Batei Mikdash which were taken as mashken (collateral) due to the sins of Klal Yisroel.

This leaves us with a question: Why is the destruction of Bayis Rishon and Bayis Sheini relevant here, while calculating exactly which donations were used for what? And if the Torah wanted to allude to this, it would seem more suitable in Parshas Terumah, where the donations come in and the Mishkan is built.

HE READ THE LINES AGAIN. What a lack of respect! Rabbi Aharon Goldberg, shlit”a, could not get over the language in the letter he was holding in his hands.

It was just after the petirah of Rabbi Goldberg’s grandfather, the legendary posek hador, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, and he was going through some of the possessions he found in his grandfather’s home. In the Rav’s personal drawer, Rabbi Goldberg found a strange letter. It was written by a young bochur.

“What is the Rav so busy with? It’s not a good enough reason not to pay attention to me! The Rav should have answered my question instead of pushing me away… Even young bochurim deserve to receive a proper answer.”

In a letter written to one of the greatest gedolim of the day, such expression was totally unacceptable. How could a young boy berate the Rav outright?!

Knowing his grandfather — the paradigm of middos, who was famous for the perpetual smile on his face and patience for every Yid — Rabbi Goldberg guessed that he probably used the letter as his little personal reminder. He imagined his grandfather kept it close to him, in his personal drawer, so he could read and reread it, to remind himself to have even more patience for his fellow Yidden, to arouse him to treat those who came to him with shailos with greater consideration and attentiveness.

Still, it was puzzling. Rav Shlomo Zalman was indeed a picture of humility, but anyone who knew him could attest that treating others kindly was his strong point!

And so, Rabbi Goldberg kept the letter — and the mystery — to himself.

One day, Rabbi Goldberg was visiting a faraway town, with a small frum community. Hearing that he was a grandson of the

“The Rav should have answered my question instead of pushing me away… Even young bochurim deserve to receive a proper answer”
Moshe could have said, “I’m the rebbi of Klal Yisrael. I should be trusted implicitly without needing to give a din v’cheshbon”

late gadol hador, a man approached him excitedly. “Is it true that you’re a grandson of Rav Shlomo Zalman?” he asked. “Your grandfather had such a clear hashkafa! I must tell you a personal experience I had with him…”

The man shared:

I was a young yeshivah bochur at the time, and one day, I went up to Rav Shlomo Zalman with a question. I waited my turn, and finally, when I got to speak with the Rav, I said, “There are so many uncommon mitzvos that hardly anyone does.” I mentioned leket, shikchah and peah as examples, and asked, “Why don’t we encourage yeshivah students to perform them? Isn’t every Yid obligated to do all mitzvos? Shouldn’t the yeshivos arrange, as part of the yeshivah curriculum, an organized way to do these mitzvos, too?”

Rav Shlomo Zalman looked at me, and waved his hand, as if dismissing my entire question. “Bochurim in yeshivah are supposed to do one thing: sit and learn. That’s all they should be involved in.”

I was disappointed. It seemed to me that the Rav was being dismissive. He hadn’t seemed to pay attention to the question on my mind and simply disregarded it. It bothered me so much that I later sent the Rav a letter.

grandfather, the great Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, had kept the letter close and humbly allowed it to serve as mussar. Even if it came about in an impudent manner, he accepted it and sought to improve, reminding himself to be sure no solicitor would ever walk away feeling as if he had not been heard.

* * * * *

Rav Moshe Feinstein explains:

The Torah chooses to refer to the churbanos of the Batei Mikdash specifically now — as we account for all donations — to teach us that had we learned our mussar from Parshas Pekudei, we could have prevented the churbanos. In this parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu shows Klal Yisroel exactly what he did with each piece of gold and silver.

Moshe could have said, “I’m the rebbi of Klal Yisroel. I should be trusted implicitly without needing to give a din v’cheshbon.” But Moshe did not hold himself high, and did not trust himself.

This was intentional. Moshe wanted to show that even the greatest tzaddik could be susceptible to the yetzer hara Despite the great person he was, in order to avoid being suspected of keeping some treasures for himself, he provided an exact calculation.

www.cheetashoes.com

The Rav replied to my letter. He apologized for his dismissive answer to my question, and agreed that the manner of his response had been improper, but explained that it had come about because he was so bogged down by the large number of people who were coming to him with their questions. Rav Shlomo Zalman requested my forgiveness for not having treated me properly, but added that he was not taking back his words — the answer he had given me is the appropriate approach, because he was truly convinced that bochurim in yeshivah must do one thing only, and that is delve into Torah in depth.

Rabbi Goldberg walked away from the exchange with renewed clarity. His assumption had been correct! His

The yetzer hara is out to trap anyone. In the times preceding Churban Bayis Rishon and Churban Bayis Sheini, the Yidden trusted themselves. They didn’t listen to the words of the neviim, and believed they understood best. They did not heed mussar, and thus did not do teshuvah. That ultimately led to the Churban. Had they been open to feedback from others, they could have improved and avoided the great tragedies of the churban

This is why the Torah hints at the churbanos specifically here. We should have taken a lesson from Moshe Rabbeinu’s actions in this parsha Al taamin b’atzmecha! A person should always second-guess himself, and check whether he needs improvement.

CRAFTING THE MAGIC OF PESACH

A Peek Behind the Process of Crafting Pesach Masterpieces

PENINA JACOBS

MAH NISHTANA , MEFOAR?

What’s different this year?
Because with Mefoar, there’s always something new, something unexpected, something glistening at the

seder table.

The Heart is in the Detail

When a mother puts her all into cooking a Yom Tov feast, it’s not because she has to. It’s because she wants to make Pesach truly beautiful. When a playgroup teacher invests time to craft a special Haggadah for her toddler students, it’s not because she must. It’s because she wants to make the mitzvah special for them. This is the beauty of Yiddishkeit: the special touch we add to every mitzvah, elevating it to something extraordinary. This very concept is also the essence of Mefoar.

Simmering in Summertime

In June 2024, what was on your mind? Summer getaways, perhaps. Maybe Sukkos arrangements, but definitely not Pesach plans. Yet, that’s what Yanky Roth was thinking about. As the mastermind behind Mefoar, his mind is always feverishly buzzing with new ideas. Last summer, he was already deep in the process of creating Pesach at Mefoar.

“I get feedback from people all year long; they tell me what they love about our Pesach set designs,” says Mr. Roth. “I’m always thinking about how to improve, how to offer something fresh, something exciting, something different.”

Creating with the Greats

Creating masterpieces takes time—and a group of masterminds. On the team, there’s Shlome Steinmetz from Pivot Group; Mayer Ungar, head designer at Pivot Group; Yoel Waksberger from Waksberger Judaica, and Yossi Goldberger from Yossi Gee Studios. This amalgamation of the greatest creative minds in the Yiddishe industry collaborates closely to oversee the meticulous process of crafting the new Pesach products.

It Starts with a Sketch

Scratch, scratch, goes the pencil, as it etches out line after line. The artist sits back to review his handiwork, then crumples the paper and begins anew. And so the process continues until there are several designs to select from. Those selections go to Mr. Roth, who convenes with the design team.

“It’s always hard to choose,” says Mr. Steinmetz. “The

sketches are all beautiful, but the finished pieces have to be really perfect—seder table perfect.” So they go back and forth, offering opinions and discussing every detail until the team decides on the final two designs.

Fabrics Have Feelings

Should we begin in Italy? The USA? Turkey? That’s the journey Mr. Roth embarked on to source the exquisite fabrics featured in this year’s new Pesach sets. Each swatch is carefully pored over to determine its quality, durability, and beauty— before the style mavens even step in.

The Estrella collection is made from three distinctive fabrics:

• Italian velvet, sourced from the prestigious mills of Como and Venice, with a silk-rich base that gives it a lush, glowing luster. This high-end velvet is then laser-cut, revealing a unique shine and depth, almost like a three-dimensional art piece.

• Belgian linen, known for its natural elegance, soft texture, and exceptional strength, adding balance and softness to the collection.

• Spanish brocade, with its rich texture and heritage of intricate weaving, adds a final layer of sophistication and contrast.

Once there are options on the table, Mr. Roth once again gathers his team to determine which trio of fabrics will beautify seder tables around the globe.

Astone-ishing Stones

Hundreds of stones are carefully examined, but only the most exceptional make the cut. “It has to be special,” says Mr. Roth. “We’re looking for something royal. Something mefoar’dig.”

The team handpicked Swarovski crystals with a unique cut that re fracts light in dazzling ways—creating a sparkle that brings a sense of won der and regal elegance to each piece.

Sew It Continues

The sketches, stones, and fabrics make their way to the factory for production. This is where vision meets crafts manship. Skilled hands transform raw materials into exquisite pieces, each detail carefully refined. Every gem is placed with care. Every fabric is stitched with precision. Every product undergoes meticulous inspection before it’s approved to carry the Mefoar name.

The result? A breathtaking creation that brings beauty and dignity to your Yom Tov table.

lessly to create a dynamic and regal centerpiece. The shine, texture, and dimension of Estrella make it a showstopper—a true work of art that captures the spirit of Pesach in every thread.

Just steps away, the Vellano collection offers a completely different take on luxury.

Where Estrella is bold and expressive, Vellano whispers elegance through minimalism. Crafted from an exclusive cottonlinen blend sourced from Spain’s most prestigious mills, Vellano serves as a canvas of quiet refinement. Intricate 3D embroidery, paired with Swarovski crystals, placed with sculptural precision, gives the set subtle depth and radiance. It’s a design for those who appreciate the art of restraint— where every stitch is considered, every detail masterfully executed.

A Royal Entrance

Finally, the new Pesach sets are ready to hit the shelf.

The Estrella collection is a bold fusion of heritage and innovation. Luxurious Italian laser-cut velvet, elegant Belgian linen, and richly textured Spanish brocade are intricately layered with stunning embroidery and crystal embellishments. The fabrics, though contrasting in nature, are melded seam-

Surround Yourself with Splendor

As you set the table with pomp and royalty, there’s a story behind every single piece. The pillows, with the matching towels and matzah tash for the entire family, were the subject of many a lively conversation at Mefoar HQ. The acrylic shtenders were carefully designed to prevent wine spills on your new matching Haggadah. The matzah covers, adorned with intricate embroidery, were created to double as chargers for the children’s places.

Eichenstein to Mayor: Proposed Shelter Will Help Dozens, But Will Hurt Hundreds

Plans to place a homeless shelter in the heart of Boro Park has Simcha Eichenstein up in arms, with the assemblyman penning a strongly worded letter to Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Social Services Commissioner Molly Park explaining why the facility would be a colossally bad fit for the neighborhood.

As previously reported in The Boro Park View, the city has proposed a homeless shelter to house 80 families at two buildings located on 50th Street and 10th Avenue. Eichenstein’s letter expressed his surprise that no input was sought from the local community or its elected officials, noting that objections from residents were summarily dismissed at a recent Community Board 12 meeting. According to Eichenstein, it seemed clear that the meeting addressing the project was a mere formality, and that the profit-driven developers had already reached an agreement with the city on the property.

“Why weren’t our community leaders or local elected officials informed and engaged in advance?” asked Eichenstein. “How was this decision made without considering the input of those familiar with the neighborhood’s dynamics? A project of this magnitude should never be carried out without the involvement of those who will be most impacted.”

ated Eichenstein. “I consider it a privilege to represent a warm, diverse and vibrant community, and I can confidently say that my constituents are united in their opposition to this facility. They are committed to opposing this project with all available resources.”

Driver Alerts as Camera and Sign Changes Go Into Effect

Eichenstein noted that while the shelter would benefit 80 families, hundreds of others will be negatively impacted, with the proposed facility to be located within two blocks of a heavily used hospital, multiple medical offices, a rehabilitation facility, a 941-student public school, and residential homes. The shelter would likely lead to security issues as well, said Eichenstein, an important concern in a neighborhood when many children come home from school after dark.

Admitting that he understood the need to house the homeless, Eichenstein volunteered to discuss potential alternatives with project stakeholders, while firmly insisting that the shelter would adversely affect his constituents.

“This proposed solution is not the right approach,” reiter-

Motorists making their way down several Boro Park streets may have noticed some changes that are intended to make sure that they slow down.

Speed cameras were installed on 58th Street between 11th and 12th avenues, as well as at the 12th Avenue and 56th Street intersection. While city officials have insisted that the cameras are there to promote safety, some have been wondering if the speed cameras are just another cash grab.

Also installed last week was an all-way stop sign at the complicated intersection of 37th Street and Old New Utrecht Road, just north of Brooklyn Square.

Congestion Pricing Deadline Comes and Goes, as Washington Grants 30-Day Extension

Congestion pricing supporters celebrated last Friday as the federal government extended the program for at least another month.

President Donald Trump had promised to pull the plug on congestion pricing by March 21, but the United States Treasury Department said that it would allow the program to continue while talks continue. But Treasury Secretary Sean Duffy made it clear that Governor Kathy Hochul’s refusal to disconnect the

toll cameras around the central business district could come with consequences, calling congestion pricing “a slap in the face to hard-working Americans.” Duffy also took Hochul to task for refusing to approve a pair of pipelines that have the potential to lower fuel costs by half, saying her actions are “against the public’s best interest.”

“Your unlawful pricing scheme charges working-class citizens to use roads their federal tax dollars already paid to bill,” noted Duffy, adding that New York was potentially risking billions of dollars in federal aid.

“Continued non-compliance will not be taken lightly,” Duffy warned.

Undaunted, a joyful Hochul celebrated the continuation of congestion pricing in New York City, taking a midday cross-town bus ride to demonstrate just how much faster traffic is moving.

“Traffic is down and business is up,” said Hochul, as she stood surrounded by signs bearing the words “Thank you Governor Hochul.” “That’s the kind of progress we’re going to keep delivering for New Yorkers. Every day, more New Yorkers are seeing and hearing the benefits for our commutes, quality of life and economy, and we’re not going back.”

According to the governor, commuters saved 21 minutes on every trip through the central business district, with bridge and tunnel crossings moving 30% faster than during the same time period last year.

Chaverim’s Newest Territory: Manhattan

They’re the people you call for anything: leaks, flat tires, flooded basements and anything in between — and their services are now available in Manhattan.

Chaverim of Brooklyn and the Catskills have long been covering calls in the city, sending volunteers from Boro Park, Flatbush and Williamsburg out on calls. But by creating a dedicated Manhattan team, those who call Chaverim for help in Manhattan can expect to see faster response times.

Chaverim of Manhattan will be covering all of Manhattan, with its services available 24/7 by calling 718-431-1818.

MetroCards Being Phased Out Earlier Than Planned

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has moved up its timetable to sunset its official MetroCard by two years, and will stop selling its signature yellow and blue cards by the end of the year.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber announced the change last week, reported NBC News. The cards have been in use since 1994, and straphangers will have until at least June 2026 to use up any balances that are left on their cards, as well as to trade in their MetroCards for ONMY cards.

Once the MetroCard is gone, travelers will have multiple ways to pay their bus and subway fares. The MTA’s OMNY card will be available for purchase at all subway stations by the end of 2025, and can also be bought at participating CVS, CFSC Check Cashing, 7-Eleven, Walgreens and Payomatic stores, as well as bodegas and pharmacies. The cards can be refilled online or at subway station vending machines.

According to the MTA, riders can also use any credit, debit or reloadable prepaid cards bearing the contactless symbol, or can load their payment cards to digital wallets.

School Administrators Turn Out To Learn About Compliance From Satmar Mosdos

An event hosted by Central United Talmudical Academy drew a sizable crowd, with yeshivah and Bais Yaakov administrators eager to learn how they can stay in compliance with relevant laws.

Taking place on March 19 at The Palace, the half-day event featured prominent CPAs and attorneys who presented the practical issues of compliance, as well as its importance. The Honorable Mitchell A. Silk, former assistant secretary at the United States Department of Treasury who also chaired the committee that oversaw a years-long compliance program at the Satmar schools, was a key presenter, sharing the many lessons learned to benefit the greater community.

“The Satmar schools are setting a precedent for the community at large, sharing our experience to provide practical, actionable insights that can benefit any yeshivah or Bais Yaakov,” said Chesky Berkowitz, chairman of the board of Central United Talmudical Academy.

Brooklyn Law School’s Professor Aaron Twerski emphasized the importance of compliance for the yeshivah community.

“A strong culture of compliance is essential to ensuring the strength, security and sustainability of our yeshivas and communal institutions,” said Professor Twerski. “Mosdos cannot afford the risk of multimillion-dollar fines or legal exposure. Proactive compliance is… imperative.”

Trailing in the Polls, Adams Blames Cuomo for City’s Woes

Former governor Andrew Cuomo may be the current frontrunner in the 2025 mayoral race, but Mayor Eric Adams is lay-

ing the blame for the city’s public safety issues squarely at his opponent’s feet.

A video released by Cuomo this month said that New York’s current lack of leadership has left city residents feeling “out of control and in crisis.” Adams responded to those allegations with jabs of his own, saying that Cuomo’s 2019 bail reform puts criminals back out on the streets where they are free to commit crimes once again.

“When you look at the problems we are facing around public safety, it was born out of Albany,” said Adams. “It was the laws that he passed… You can’t come back later and try to reinvent your life when you were in office already,” added Adams.

Adams also blamed Cuomo for the city’s current homeless crisis, saying that programs shut down by the former governor kept New York from getting the resources it deserved, which could have helped it cope with a large influx of migrants.

Cuomo’s mayoral star has been rising in past weeks, while Adams’ seems to be plummeting. As to whether the former governor can actually make it to City Hall, spokesperson Rich Azzopardi said simply, “The people of New York City will judge performance.”

Area Bridges Should be Evaluated for Collapse Risk, Says NTSB

Almost a year to the day after six

construction workers died in a Baltimore bridge collapse, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended that dozens of potentially vulnerable bridges be evaluated to determine their risk of failure in similar circumstances.

All 68 bridges identified in the NTSB March 18 report were built before 1991, when the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials began issuing bridge vulnerability standards. The agency advised conducting vulnerability assessments on the spans, which are located in nineteen different states, to see if they meet federal guidelines for withstanding collisions with passing ships.

New York/New Jersey bridges identified in the report included both spans of the Verrazano Narrows and the Newburgh-Beacon bridges, as well as the George Washington, Outerbridge, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Newark Bay bridges. Four of those spans are the oldest bridges on the list, with the Outerbridge Crossing built in 1928, the Manhattan Bridge built in 1909, the Williamsburg Bridge built in 1903, and the Brooklyn Bridge built in 1883.

The NTSB emphasized that a bridge’s inclusion on the list does not necessarily suggest that it poses a danger, but that it should be evaluated for its risk potential because it predates federal safety guidelines. Built in 1977, Baltimore’s 1.6-mile long Key Bridge was found to be at nearly 30 times the acceptable risk level at the time of its collapse.

Roiza meets her friend Shalva, who tells her about a support group. Kaily learns that her father cashed out his life insurance policy to pay for her sons’ weddings.

to keep his mother busy?

She wanted Kaily to leave her alone already so she could call the number Shalva gave her.

Roiza determinedly dialed the next number on her list. Yiddy had collected phone numbers from different neighborhoods with single-family homes who were the most likely to switch to solar energy.

Her mind and fingers used to be intimately related. Now they barely recognized each other. Roiza willed her fingers to stop dancing as she picked up the phone.

She had a job, an office chair and a phone that was somehow connected to Yiddy’s office.

Kaily hovered nearby.

Her kids were amazing. Truly. They really cared about her. They put their life on hold for her.

It was just that they sometimes forgot that although her body was rebelling, her mind was pretty much in working order. Take this job, for instance. Was she interested in selling solar energy to strangers over the phone? Well, she was interested in helping her son, but spending her days listening to people grumble when they realized why she had called was not her idea of fun. She wondered if Yiddy even thought she’d make any sales. Maybe he just wanted

“Good morning,” she trilled. Maybe Perela got her acting skills from her. She even had a script to follow. Yiddy’s marketing consultant had composed it especially for her.

A woman’s voice. “Hi? Who am I speaking to?”

“It’s Rose,” she said. “How are you?”

“Good. How can I help you?”

“How are your utility bills?”

Click.

“You win some, you lose some,” she said aloud to convince herself of this truth.

Kaily stood at attention. “Ma, do you need anything?” Honestly? She needed Kaily to give her some space.

WELL, SHE WAS INTERESTED IN HELPING HER SON, BUT SPENDING HER DAYS LISTENING TO PEOPLE GRUMBLE WHEN THEY REALIZED WHY SHE HAD CALLED WAS NOT HER IDEA OF FUN
CHANIE SPIRA

To trust her to dial some random phone numbers by herself.

“No. I’m good, Kaily, really. Don’t you have anything to do?”

“I do,” Kaily said. “I’m on hold with the insurance company. I’m working on getting reimbursed for the aqua therapy.”

“Maybe do it on the couch? At least you’ll get to sit.” Kaily had been on the phone with the insurance company since her fall, probably.

“Nah, Ma. We have to start those hip rotations in five minutes.”

“I can’t wait,” Roiza said, rolling her eyes. “So sit for five minutes.”

Kaily retreated to the living room, looking wounded.

Roiza dialed the next phone number. Two more calls, and then I’m calling this support group.

“Hi! Can I speak to Martha?”

“Speaking.” The voice was raspy and cranky. Roiza’s eyes lit up.

She spoke to Martha about her cat and about her son who moved west to Dakota. But solar energy? She lived in a rental.

No sale. But she still enjoyed it.

“Good morning,” she greeted the next caller.

“Hi,” a man’s voice said politely. He sounded Jewish.

“Hi, it’s Roiza speaking.” She glanced at the name on the roster. Yocheved Newman. “Can I speak to Yocheved?” Or maybe she should speak to him, rather? But she couldn’t imagine convincing a man to shell out thousands of dollars for solar energy.

“Yocheved?” he echoed. “Um, no.” The man swallowed. “She’s not alive anymore.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, Mr. Newman.” The man sounded young. Not twenty, but definitely not eighty.

“It’s okay. It’s been a while.”

“It’s not okay,” Roiza said softly. “My husband passed away four years ago, and it’s still not okay.”

Mr. Newman stayed silent. Finally, he answered, “Thank you, Mrs….”

“Handler. Anyway, the real reason I’m calling is because of my son. And the sun.” Ha! I never even realized that! This could be my new marketing technique. “So, my son uses the sun to power energy.”

Mr. Newman’s laughter traveled through the wires, warm and real.

“So you want me to buy the sun from your son, I get it. I want to hear more, but I’m running to work now. Can you call me in the evening?”

Kaily walked in, hold music still streaming from the phone.

“Sure. I’ll call you later, then.”

Roiza carefully guided her fingers to end the call. She took a pen and circled his name and number. Mr. Newman. She could still hear him laughing. She would definitely call him later.

“Hip rotations!” Kaily announced. She sounded like a drill sergeant.

Oy! How Kaily needed a little laughter in her life.

Round and round went her hips in excruciating spasms of pain. Round and round went her thoughts.

So this Mr. Newman is single. And he seems nice. And he has a nice laugh. All I need is his first name and some references.

“Okay, ankles,” Kaily declared.

“Yes, ma’am,” Roiza couldn’t help saying. Like a good little girl, she pointed and flexed her numb toes.

But she couldn’t help smiling.

* * * * *

The door flew open. Leiby and Avrumy bounded in from cheder in a tornado of coats, briefcases and a tree’s worth of papers.

“Hello!” Perela greeted them from between containers of soup and foil pans waiting to be labeled and put into the freezer.

“Ma! How do you know it was a woman who invented sushi?” Yonah had been making jokes about China since he heard about her trip.

She didn’t bother telling him that sushi likely originated from Japan and not China. “I don’t know,” she answered dutifully.

“Of course it was a woman! Sueshe.”

Ha.

“I have another one!” he said.

She didn’t want to listen to jokes now. Tziri had given her a day off to prepare for the trip. “Get yourself something nice to wear,” she’d said, “maybe cute booties.”

Booties. My foot. Ha, again!

She used every second of her day to stock the freezer for her trip and make sure each of her kids had enough tights and socks to last the week without any laundry getting done.

The phone rang. Pilchik, Esther Sheva’s teacher.

Avrumy was standing right next to her, ready with his own joke.

“I’ll take this call, and then I’ll listen,” she said.

She answered, keenly aware of Sheva’s presence nearby. Perela stealthily moved to the hallway. Sheva followed.

Mrs. Plonchik explained how hard they were trying to work with the calendar. “You have to understand, we have only that Monday available for this performance. I know you asked about switching days with the parallel class, but a kid from the other class has her brother’s wedding that night, so that won’t work. And the principal has a workshop the next day, in the city.

“So the best we can do is allow you to come on Wednesday, when they’ll be performing for the first and second graders in their classroom.”

Sheva would not accept that.

“Aha. I hear,” she said, as vaguely as possible. From down the hallway, Sheva stared at her accusingly. “I can’t change my trip. Will they be wearing their costumes on Wednesday?”

“I’m not sure. I’ll ask.”

She hung up slowly. Sheva’s eyes were wide and angry.

She didn’t need to say anything. Sheva tore through the hallway and ran up to her bedroom. She slammed the door like a bona fide teenager, and her sobs echoed in the suddenly still kitchen.

Should she go upstairs? Explain to Sheva that Kaily and her mother would come to her play? That she already bought her a gift and she

SHEVA TORE THROUGH THE HALLWAY AND RAN UP TO HER BEDROOM. SHE SLAMMED THE DOOR LIKE A BONA FIDE TEENAGER, AND HER SOBS ECHOED IN THE SUDDENLY STILL KITCHEN

was planning to get her another one in China?

Perela removed another label from the sheet and stuck it onto a 9x13-inch pan. Breaded cutlets

“Why is there no Disneyland in China?” Avrumy asked.

“Why?” she echoed. Batter-fried cutlets, she wrote on the next label and stuck in on another foil pan. Next. Four deli containers filled with soup. Butternut squash.

“Because no one’s tall enough to go on the good rides.”

She chuckled through clenched teeth.

“Ma, why takke are they short?”

She lost her patience. “Go ask Hillel Hazaken,” she said. “He had the patience to answer questions about the Chinese.”

Yonah looked wounded.

Why? Why was she hurting her own kids?

Because they were sucking every bit of fun from her trip.

She deserved this trip. She hadn’t gone anywhere, not even to

Florida, since shanah rishonah. Why couldn’t her family send her off with kisses and smiles? Why did she have to stock her freezer with suppers and cookies?

Did Sheva have to be so unforgiving? Kaily would make sure to video the entire performance, and she’d watch the second performance on Wednesday.

And speaking of Kaily, why was she acting as if it was Perela’s fault that she quit her job?

* * * * *

Ezriel didn’t think Sheva was overreacting. “To her it’s the most important thing in her life right now,” he explained when they were eating supper.

At least, he was. She had no appetite after cooking for so many hours. The house wore an unmistakable layer of tension, with Sheva still holed up in her room.

“You don’t get it,” she said. “When you went to Eretz Yisroel

for Yossi’s wedding last year, you just went. You packed your bags, left to the airport, and that was that. The kids were happy with the gummy worms you brought back.”

She remembered that trip. Ezriel did nothing. Perela made him sandwiches and cut up fruit, he zipped a single suitcase shut, and left.

“And I’m working around the clock to be away for one week.”

He looked at her, wide-eyed. “I don’t get it. I’m going to be home with all the kids.”

“Not Yanky.”

“Okay. Not Yanky. But I cancelled the bar mitzvah class.”

Perela nodded. “I appreciate it, really. But everyone’s making me feel like a selfish baby for going.”

She headed upstairs, ostensibly to move the laundry to the dryer, but also to check on Sheva.

She heard Avrumy talking to her. “Sheva, why is the Great Wall of China one of the Seven Wonders of the World?”

Sheva answered, “Because Mommy wants to see that more than my play.”

“No, silly. Because it’s the only thing made in China that lasted more than a week.”

No one laughed.

Come pick a pair. Or two or three. Because as the flowers bloom, so should your collection of shoes.

MOCK SUSHI SIDE OF SALMON

This mock sushi salmon is a refined take on simplicity, using minimal ingredients to create an elegant and flavorful bite. Perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious, this salmon is a must-try.

INGREDIENTS

2 lb. side of salmon

½ cup mayonnaise

1 T. lemon juice

1 tsp. kosher salt

Pinch of black pepper

AVOCADO MOUSSE

3 avocados

3–4 T. mayonnaise

Juice of a half lemon

1 T. kosher salt, plus more to taste

MANGO SALSA

½ mango, finely diced

1 small carrot, finely diced

2 Persians cucumbers, finely diced

Juice of 1 lime

Pinch of salt

POTATO CRUNCH

2 Idaho potatoes, grated

Oil for frying

Salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 425°.

2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and place the side of salmon on the baking sheet.

3. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

4. Brush the salmon with the mayonnaise mixture, and bake for 25 minutes.

5. While the salmon bakes, prepare the remaining components. Place all avocado mousse ingredients into a bowl, and use an immersion blender to blend until smooth. Do not use a fork to do this; the avocado should be perfectly smooth. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

6. For the salsa, combine all ingredients, and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

7. For the potato crunch, heat oil in a deep frying pan. Squeeze out all the liquid from the potatoes, and fry potatoes until golden.

8. Place the ready crispy potatoes onto a paper towel–lined plate, and sprinkle with salt.

9. To assemble, place the avocado mousse into a piping bag, and pipe onto the salmon. Top with salsa and crispy potatoes.

CREAMY SQUASH SOUP WITH MARROW BONES

This silky squash soup is beautifully simple, yet the marrow bones add a rich, deep flavor that sets it apart. Velvety and creamy, this soup is a welcome addition to your Pesach table.

INGREDIENTS

2 T. oil

2 white onions 1-inch piece fresh ginger

6 zucchini

1 parsnip

2 Yukon potatoes

3 T. kosher salt

½ tsp. black pepper

2 large marrow bones

8 cups water

2. Chop all the vegetables (large pieces are okay), and add to the pot. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes.

3. Place the marrow bones in a wrap ‘n boil bag, and add to the pot along with the salt and pepper.

4. Cover with water, and allow to simmer for 3 hours.

5. Remove the bones from the pot, and blend using an immersion blender.

6. Return the bones to the pot and serve warm.

APPLE GINGER ROAST

This Pesach roast features a crust of grated apples and ginger, which infuses the meat with rich depth and subtle sweetness. Tender and full of flavor, this is a stunning centerpiece for your Yom Tov table.

INGREDIENTS

3–4 lb. club or French roast Salt and pepper

3 T. oil

2 onions, sliced

2 cups grated Fuji apples (approximately 2 apples)

1-inch piece of ginger, diced

¼ cup red wine

1 cup chicken soup stock

DIRECTIONS

1. Rub the roast generously with salt and pepper.

2. Heat oil in a pan, and sear the meat for 3 to 4 minutes per side.

3. Layer the onion on the bottom of a deep 9x13-inch pan. Place the seared roast on top of it.

4. In a bowl, combine the apples, ginger and red wine. Pat the mixture onto the meat. Turn the meat halfway through so that the entire meat is covered with the mixture.

5. Add the chicken stock to the pan.

6. Wet a piece of parchment paper the size of the pan. Cover the pan with the parchment paper and then with silver foil.

7. Bake at 325° for 4 to 4½ hours. Allow the meat to cool completely in the refrigerator before slicing.

SPAGHETTI SQUASH MUFFINS

These spaghetti squash muffins are irresistibly delicious — light, flavorful and perfectly golden. They disappear fast, so be sure to double the recipe!

INGREDIENTS

1 spaghetti squash

3 T. oil

2 onions, diced

1 tsp. salt

1 cup grated carrots

2 eggs

3 T. potato starch

2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. black pepper, optional

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 450°.

2. Cut the spaghetti squash in half, and place face down on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 40 minutes. (Alternatively, you can place the spaghetti squash whole in the oven, and after approximately 20 minutes, remove from the oven to slice in half. The spaghetti squash will now be softer and easier to cut. Return to the oven for the remaining baking time.)

3. While the squash is baking, heat oil in a pan. Add the diced onions, and saute until browned.

4. Add the salt and carrots, and saute until the carrots start to soften.

5. Remove the squash from the oven. Turn it over, and using 2 forks, shred the squash into spaghetti strips. (This step should be very easy.)

6. Place the squash in a large bowl along with the onions and carrots. Mix to combine.

7. Add the eggs, potato starch, salt and pepper.

WEEK 2 OF 4

LEAH’S CORNER

As you get ready to tackle your Pesach cooking, we are back with a four-week culinary collection of timeless Yom Tov classics developed by our beloved and unforgettable food columnist Leah Stern, a”h

THE FIRST DAY IN THE PESACH KITCHEN

As soon as I open my Pesach kitchen, which is usually about one week to Yom Tov (my motto is that I don’t need more time to cook than the time we’ll spend eating the food), I focus on stocking up on the basics. I prepare foods that will ease the cooking all through Pesach so I can enjoy fresh, delicious meals with minimum work and cleanup.

I start with two large pots of apple compote, and then spend some hours cleaning all and preparing some of my chicken so it’s ready to bake. This makes Yom Tov cooking a cinch.

In addition, I prepare the three following recipes: plenty of sauteed onions, vegetable soup base in a large quantity, and ready-prepared ground chicken mixture. These are especially helpful to have on hand throughout Pesach, when I prepare everything from scratch. It gives me the opportunity to go gourmet without being stuck to the stove and sink all Yom Tov long.

SAUTEED ONIONS

Since I am of Hungarian descent, I smother my food with sauteed onions. Over the course of one Yom Tov, I can easily use between 16 and 20 pounds of sauteed onions. Having these prepared and handy cuts daily food prep time considerably.

For perfect flavor, use a variety of onions.

INGREDIENTS

6 lb. large onions

1½ cups oil or 1 cup schmaltz

Large-surface frying pan or pot

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut 1½ pounds of onions in eighths. Place in a food processor fitted with the S blade. Pulse a few times, until chopped onions are approximately ⅓-inch in size. Do not allow onion pieces to become too small or watery, or they will turn into a bitter, mushy mess.

2. Heat the empty pot on a high flame. Add oil/schmaltz to the hot pot. Once oil has heated, add the onions. Cook for fifteen minutes, mixing every five minutes. Adjust flame if onions start to burn.

3. Add another 1½ pounds of chopped onions to the pot, and continue mixing every five minutes. Continue adding onions to the pot every fifteen minutes, and continue mixing every five minutes.

4. After all the onions have been added to the pot, allow to saute for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, mixing occasionally. Store in a glass jar in the back of your fridge.

Yields approximately 4 cups of a sauteed onions.

Note: For large quantities, work with two pots at a time. Alternatively, use a large electric skillet, but make sure to adjust temperature, as onions can burn very quickly if heat is too high.

How To Enjoy Your Sauteed Onions

Put 1½ cups sauteed onions over 4 to 6 chicken bottoms, and bake.

Fry skinless, plain chicken cutlets in a little oil, and serve with sauteed onions.

Heat an ample amount of fried onions, and cube in leftover chicken from soup. Add some oil and allow to brown.

Use some of these onions to jumpstart your cholent.

Mix into or serve on top of mashed potatoes.

Fry with cubed, boiled potatoes to enjoy hash browns.

Spoon some into your potato latke, vegetable kugel or pie mixture for gourmet flavor.

Cook with 1 T. starch, ½ cup water and spices for instant onion sauce.

VEGETABLE SOUP BASE

Although this is a basic soup base, I use it in many other dishes, including appetizers, main dishes and sides. Freeze in containers of various sizes, and use accordingly.

The following ideas are a baseline to spark your creativity, as is the exact blend of vegetables. Feel free to use different combinations to suit your minhagim and eating styles.

INGREDIENTS

½ cup oil or schmaltz

2 Spanish onions

2 parsley roots

1 medium-sized knob celery

1 medium-sized turnip

1 medium-sized kohlrabi

6 loose carrots

2 squash

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut onions in eighths. Place in a food processor fitted with the S blade. Pulse a few times, until chopped onions are approximately ⅓-inch in size.

2. Heat a large empty fryer. Add oil/schmaltz, and allow to heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add onions.

3. Chop parsley roots and knob celery with the S blade until finely chopped. Shred rest of the vegetables with a fine shredder.

4. Place over onions after about 5 to 10 minutes. Allow to saute for approximately 1 hour over a medium flame, watching that vegetables should not burn. Stir occasionally.

Yields approximately 16 cups

How To Enjoy Your Vegetable Mixture

Instant vegetable soup: To each cup of sauteed vegetables, add 2½ cups of water. Boil up and add salt. Allow to cook for approximately a half hour. For potato soup, add cubed potatoes and a bit more water. This soup is delicious with thin strips of egg lokshen.

Instant vegetable sauce: Just cook with a little water, starch and salt. Serve over chicken, potatoes or blintzes.

Vegetable potato latkes: Mix with grated potatoes, sauteed onions and eggs, and fry.

Vegetable blintz filling: Use equal amounts of sauteed vegetables and mashed potatoes. Add salt to taste.

Put one cup of sauteed vegetables over 4–6 chicken bottoms in a chicken fryer. Serve with potatoes and gravy.

Mix with mashed potatoes and fill pounded chicken cutlets. Place over sauteed onions. Put some sauteed onions on top, and bake.

GROUND CHICKEN MIXTURE

In our family, we enjoy formal fleishig meals on Chol Hamoed. This prepared chicken mixture is extremely useful. It simplifies the serving of something other than chicken bottoms — yet again.

INGREDIENTS

2 lb. ground chicken

1 cup ready sauteed vegetable soup base

3 T. sauteed onions

3 eggs Salt

1 cup mashed potatoes

Note: Each 2-pound mixture serves approximately 10. Multiply the recipe to fit your needs.

How To Enjoy Your Ground Chicken Mixture

Slice large potatoes lengthwise. Bake for ½ hour on an oiled cookie sheet with a drop of salt on 350°. In a 9x13 pan, layer potatoes, ground chicken mixture, and vegetable soup base to which a little salt has been added. Repeat. Bake, covered, for 2 hours on 350°. For better flavor, sprinkle sauteed onions between potato and chicken layers.

Freeze ground chicken mixture rolled up in a parchment paper, and bake in a large pan along with chicken bottoms. With a knife, prick bottom and sides of parchment paper to allow flavors to blend.

Form into chicken patties and freeze, single layered. Once frozen, you can put them into a bag. Fry or bake as needed.

Form balls, and drop into vegetable soup for chicken kneidlach.

To prepare shepherd’s pie, place mixture on the bottom half of a 9x13-inch pan, cover with any vegetable sauce, and top with mashed potatoes to which 1 or 2 beaten eggs have been added. Top with sauteed onions, and bake. Can be frozen raw.

To prepare two-layer kugel, place mixture on the bottom half of a 9x13-inch pan. Freeze. When you prepare potato kugel, prepare an extra half recipe of batter. Place over frozen chicken layer and bake. This is a nutritious Erev Yom Tov treat.

Saute onions and sliced vegetables of your choice in a chicken fryer. Add ground chicken mixture, form patties, and allow to cook for one hour.

Fill blintz crepes with raw chicken mixture. Roll up. Place in a pan over sauteed onions, and cover with sauce of your choice. Freeze to bake before serving.

If you keep house, you’re probably on cordial terms with Clorox.

You’d also find it hard to name a cleaning agent as powerful and penetrating in odor and effect. Have you ever wondered what makes Clorox bleach so potent? Or imagine that the product has been around for one hundred and twelve years, starting off in hand-filled glass bottles on horse-drawn carts?

Get to know this aggressive foe of germs and dirt, and follow the trajectory of its producers from singleproduct manufacturer to multi-brand conglomerate.

Bleach on the Bay

It was a nice day in May 1913 when a banker, wood and coal seller, bookkeeper, lawyer, and miner each invested one hundred dollars to start a new venture. The business in question was to be a factory in the San Francisco Bay Area called the Electro-Alkaline Company, though we know it today as Clorox. Today’s shortened moniker combines the words chlorine and sodium hydroxide, the two main ingredients of the company’s original product.

Although only one of the founding five had any knowledge in chemistry, the objective for the new company was to convert ocean saltwater into sodium hypochlorite bleach using an electrolytic

process that was quite advanced for its time. Clorox liquid bleach circa 1913 was packaged in industrial-sized, 5-gallon returnable containers with labels that proudly let consumers know this product was “made by electricity.”

It didn’t take long for the young company to hit a roadblock: Electro-Alkaline was great at making bleach, but the general public was still vastly ignorant of what bleach was and what it could do.

Enter Mr. and Mrs. William and Annie Murray, a shareholder couple who couldn’t afford to see their investment go south. William installed himself as first general manager of the teetering company while Annie, a grocery store proprietress, suggested that

Electro-Alkaline produce a less concentrated bleach solution that would be perfect for home use. Annie then developed customer demand by handing out free mini bleach samples to customers at her store.

To further boost sales, door-to-door salespeople demonstrated how Clorox could whiten an ink-stained piece of fabric, then immediately took orders for local grocers to fill.

Annie even established the Clorox delivery service, which trundled wagons of bleach containers to breweries, dairies and laundries for cleaning and disinfecting.

And so, Clorox entered business and home.

The Clorox Story

Pungent and potent, Clorox’s power lies in its active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI), which is sourced from saltwater. The company’s original location in the San Francisco Bay Area was a practical choice aimed at utilizing the bay’s waters for the electrolytic process needed to create this whopper ingredient.

Once it’s part of the Clorox solution, sodium hypochlorite acts as a powerful oxidizing agent that breaks down stains and kills germs by disrupting their chemical bonds.

Clorox bleaches colors and destroys microorganisms, which is what makes it so effective at disinfection and stain removal.

Having survived two world wars, Clorox Chemical was still a singleproduct company in 1950. U.S. manufacturing company Procter and Gamble thought this business perfect for their laundry products division, and so they acquired The Clorox Chemical Company in 1957, further shortening its name to The Clorox Company. However, since the U.S. had already ingested the bitter lessons of the Gilded Age, with its monopolies and the ensuing Great Depression, the Federal Trade Commission jumped in to contest the sale on grounds that it could lessen competition and lead to an industry monopoly. The Supreme Court concurred, and though it took a decade, in 1967, Clorox became privately owned again.

As the laundry products market became more competitive, Clorox saw the need to branch out. Seeking more baskets for their metaphorical eggs, the company acquired multiple brands in ensuing years. Their gradual expansion landed them on the Fortune 500 list for the first time in 1974, and annually since 2000. Additionally, in 2018, Clorox appeared on Barron’s “100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies” list. They’ve consistently ranked in the top 25 since then; in 2019, they ranked seventh.

Today, The Clorox Company categories include cleaning and disinfecting, pet care, food storage, and wellness.

ELEGANCE IS EVERGREEN.

The Clorox Company has had its fair share in the legal limelight. Here’s a sampling of lawsuits the company has faced.

Hernandez vs. Clorox & Walmart

In 2020, Valeria Segoviano Hernandez, a young mother out shopping at Walmart with her toddler, attempted to remove a bottle of Clorox bleach from the shelf. The bottlecap unexpectedly detached, spilling bleach on her arm and hand, causing chemical burns and prompting Hernandez to file a personal injury lawsuit against Walmart and Clorox for design defect and negligence.

A twelve-member jury found Walmart’s negligence not to be the main cause of Hernandez’s harm, and also concluded that Valeria herself had been negligent, and that had contributed to her injuries. The jury returned a defense verdict and the case was dismissed, much to the chagrin of Ms. Hernandez who’d sought $43 million in damages.

Gudgel vs. The Clorox Company

During the frenzy of the Covid-19 pandemic, Shana Gudgel of Florida purchased Clorox Splash-Less Bleach and was dismayed to find that unlike the regular Clorox, the Splash-Less formula did not disinfect. She filed a class action lawsuit against the Clorox Company, hoping to raise a hue and cry and benefit the wider public. Gudgel claimed that Splash-Less Bleach had been advertised in a way that misled customers. She cited ad copy like “the same Clorox product you love, now with more power per drop” and “10X deep cleaning” as leading her to believe that the bleach could kill coronavirus.

The presiding judge disagreed with Gudgel, claiming that the brand name Clorox does not automatically imply disinfection, and that the product’s back label specifically states “not for sanitization or disinfection.” The case was dismissed.

Interestingly, Gudgel had better luck with a class action lawsuit a while later, this time against the Reynolds company. She claimed that it falsely dubbed certain Hefty and Great Value trash bags as “recycling bags” despite their inability to be recycled. While the company denied all wrongdoing, they did agree to a settlement of $3 million.

The Clorox Settlement on Specialty Bleaches

This case, filed by five Californian counties, claimed that Clorox had shortchanged their customers by filling certain specialty bleach bottles only to 80% capacity. This case’s outcome was the company paying nearly $200,000 to settle, with an injunction that prohibited it from selling household bleach products packaged misleadingly or deceptively or containing unnecessary headspace.

Clorox vs. Reckitt Benckiser

This was a case with Clorox on the offense, for a change. The company sued Reckitt Benckiser for false and misleading advertising via their Lysol brand. In an unclassy move, Lysol had aired a series of ads that hyped up its products’ cleaning capabilities and unfavorably compared them to Clorox’s, with Lysol always coming out the winner. Clorox argued that Lysol’s marketing was deceptive to consumers and gave Lysol an unfair advantage in the market. In this case, Clorox largely won. The court found that Reckitt Benckiser had indeed engaged in false advertising and so allowed Clorox to pursue damages.

The Clorox Settlement and the Recall of Pine-Sol

When it turned out that eight varieties of the popular and fresh-smelling Pine-Sol contained harmful amounts of the dangerous bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clorox issued a voluntary recall of 37 million bottles of Pine-Sol from January 2021 to September 2022. They also agreed to pay $5.65 million to settle the ensuing lawsuit against them and to reimburse customers who’d purchased the cleaner.

Cyberstruck!

In 2023, the Clorox Company fell victim to a serious cybersecurity breach. Major fallout included system disruptions and product shortages, and cost the company a whopping $356 million in damages.

Bleachers, Beware!

Is bleach safe for household use? Yes, but only if handled properly. Mind the dos and don’ts of bleach:

Always dilute bleach according to the manufacturer’s instructions to get a safer and more effective product.

Always make sure the area of use is properly ventilated, because inhaling bleach over a long period of time can increase the risk of cancer.

Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling bleach.

Never mix bleach with other cleansers, especially ammonia or acid-based cleaners, as they can create dangerous and even lethal toxic gases.

Rather not use bleach at all? Hydrogen peroxide is a safer and still effective sanitizing agent. Lemon and distilled white vinegar are also fantastic natural options.

Clorox steals color and doesn’t give it back. Keep the following away from bleach: wood surfaces, stainless steel and most metals, natural stone (like marble and granite), painted surfaces, electronics, delicate fabrics like silk and lace, and grout. The last one is mentioned as a hack on some compiled lists of uses for Clorox, but experts warn that bleach can discolor and wear down grout over time.

Clorox at Home

Clorox bleach tops the housewife’s list for a bunch of practical reasons. Here are some of the best:

Keep blankets bright. White duvets can get a facelift in no time. Toss it in the machine, set to the hottest water setting, and add a cup of bleach. After a five-minute soak, add another half cup of bleach in addition to regular detergent, wash on a regular cycle, and watch those duvets turn white again. White curtains can benefit, too!

Keep cut flowers fresh longer. This sounds counterintuitive, but try it. You can extend cut flower life by adding three drops of bleach per liter of water, plus a teaspoon of sugar. This will also prevent the growth of yucky stuff at the bottom of your bouquet.

Remove mold and mildew. Bleach is famous for this. Mold and mildew will disappear if you follow these formulas:

Siding (unpainted): Use one quarter cup bleach in two cups of water, and apply the formula with a brush to any mold or mildew in sight. Leave for 15 minutes and then rinse; repeat if necessary.

Cement and stucco can also benefit from bleach treatment; just mix one cup of bleach with two gallons of water. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse.

Shower curtains: Wash in warm water with half a cup bleach and a quarter cup detergent. Let the washer run for a few minutes, and then dry at the lowest setting for ten minutes.

Sanitize plastic toys. Now that’s a help! If you have kids, your home is overrun with small plastic toys at a ratio of seven hundred to one. Lego, play furniture and doll accessories can use a good disinfecting sometimes, especially if your household has just run through a chain bout of illness. Add half a cup bleach to a bucket with a gallon or so of warm water. Soak toys for five to ten minutes, strain, rinse and dry.

Disinfect butcher block. Butcher block cutting boards are wonderful in so many ways, but one downside is that they can harbor lots of bacteria. Combine one teaspoon bleach with two quarts of water, dip in a brush, and use small circles to scrub the board. Wipe with a damp paper towel and dry immediately.

Kill weeds in sidewalk cracks. You know these impudent green stalks that like to wave hello through cracks in your walkway? Get rid of them by carefully pouring undiluted bleach into the cracks, taking care not to drip on surrounding grass or plants.

Put sparkle back in glass dishes. If you have glassware hanging on to their stubborn water stains, add a teaspoon of bleach to hot, soapy dishwater, and wash, rinse and dry as usual.

DETAILS REMAIN UNCLEAR AS ILLEGAL ALIENS DEPORTED

The Trump presidency is marching through its first 100 days with a whirlwind of activity that makes it clear that the inaugural promise to “to put America first” by deporting illegal immigrants is a high-priority item in Washington.

WITHIN HOURS OF TAKING THE OATH of office for a second time, President Donald Trump signed multiple executive orders that dealt with immigration, ordering the military to the southern border, preventing migrants from making advance appointments with border officials, suspending parole programs, and forcing migrants to wait in Mexico while the results of their asylum cases are decided.

Within 24 hours, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, more commonly known as ICE, were ordered to deport anyone who crossed the border illegally. The Trump administration also expanded the expedited deportation program, which fast-tracks the deportation of migrants lacking proper documentation who are detained within 100 miles of an international border, authorizing its use on illegal immigrants anywhere in the United States who cannot prove that they have been in the country for more than two years.

Those actions gave way to targeted ICE raids in multiple cities, including Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and Austin, as well as cities in Colorado and Puerto Rico. ICE officials were ordered to aim for 1,200 to 1,400 arrests a day. A January 29 story in the New York Post said that within the span of a week, 5,537 illegal migrants were arrested, with 4,333 detained. Among those arrested were a Jordanian national who is believed to have ties to ISIS, a notorious El Salvadorian gang member wanted for murder, and a 73-year-old Cuban man convicted on drug trafficking and weapons charges.

ICE CONTINUES TO TRUMPET NEWS of those it describes as “arrested and pending removal,” detailing crimes committed by these migrants that include murder, child kidnapping and aggravated assault. Each new announcement bears a badge reading “The Worst First,” while one showing a week’s worth of arrests notes, “These criminal aliens WERE in our neighborhoods.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt didn’t mince words during her first official press conference as she discussed the president’s plan to launch what the president described as the “largest deportation program of criminals in the history of America.”

“If you are a foreign national who illegally enters the United States of America,” said Leavitt, “you are, by definition, a criminal, and so, therefore, you are subject to deportation.” Leavitt added that hardened criminals were clearly the top priority.

Who exactly is being arrested remains unclear. Data obtained by NBC News showed that 1,179 people were arrested on January 26, 613 of which were classified as criminal arrests. That number included eight individuals considered to be in Trump’s “Worst Criminals Arrested” category, including two gang members. The remaining 566 people taken into custody were guilty of being in the United States without legal authorization, an offense that becomes criminal in nature only if they entered the country after having been previously deported.

THE LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE arrested by ICE has been overwhelming the Department of Homeland Security’s detention centers, which were already nearly full by the time Trump took office. Ever the businessman, the president responded by signing an executive order that will have the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security building a detention facility on Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay naval base that could hold as many as 30,000 deported migrants.

The first high-threat deportees arrived in Guantanamo Bay on February 5, with the ten illegal aliens brought there all said to be part of a foreign terrorist organization known for campaigns that the White House described as “extraordinarily violent” and “vicious.” As of February 12, a total of approximately one hundred migrants had been transported to Guantanamo Bay, but by mid-March, all had been either relocated to Cuba, or sent back to the United States.

Still, the Trump administration, which had vowed to deport “millions and millions” of illegal immigrants, appears to be frustrated by the pace of operations, which have resulted in an estimated 37,600 arrests during his first month in office. ICE agents have fallen short of their daily quotas, and would

need to keep to a pace of 2,700 arrests per day to reach a goal of one million deportations by the year’s end. With the number of deportations sinking as January gave way to February, the president fired two of ICE’s senior officials from their positions, reassigning them to local field offices for failing to keep up with the required pace.

“ICE needs a culture of accountability that it has been starved of for the past four years,” Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told The Washington Post. “We have a president, DHS secretary, and American people who rightfully demand results, and our ICE leadership will ensure the agency delivers.”

A CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY DHS on February 17 encouraged illegal aliens to “self-deport.” The multi-million dollar initiative includes a series of ads that have been running on various platforms and in multiple languages, warning illegal immigrants and those hoping to enter the United States illegally that they will face repercussions.

“If you are here illegally, we will find you and deport you,” says Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in the English version of the ad. “You will never return. But if you leave now, you may have an opportunity to return and enjoy our freedom and live the American Dream. If you are a criminal alien considering entering America illegally – don’t even think about it. If you come here and break our laws, we will hunt you down. Criminals are not welcome in the United States.”

How the deportations could affect our communities and businesses in terms of migrants who may be serving as housekeepers, regular employees and day laborers has never been clearly delineated. The National Immigrant Justice Center website lists a five-point plan for immigrants concerned about deportations, which includes speaking with an immigration attorney, creating a safety plan for family members, placing important financial and personal information in a safe location, and being on the alert for both immigrant fraud and digital scams.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S AGGRESSIVE STANCE has had illegal border crossings dropping to historic

lows in recent weeks, with February 2025 numbers down a shocking 90 percent over the same period last year, according to Customs and Border Patrol data. Still, stemming the influx of migrants doesn’t solve the problem of how to deport the massive numbers of Biden-era illegal aliens, who came to the United States in droves. This remains a costly endeavor. Despite those issues, the White House is continuing to forge ahead, said Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border czar.

Axios reported that the White House has already asked Congress for $175 billion to achieve its goal, with the money to be used to increase staffing by as many as 30,000 new hires and to create more detention space, a cost that would likely be passed along to taxpayers. And while Trump’s plans to send illegal immigrants back to their countries of origin met with initial resistance, and even downright refusals from some, nearby Central and South American countries have been allowing their citizens to return.

THERE ARE MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS

when it comes to figuring out how the deportations could affect our communities and our businesses in terms of cleaning help and day laborers. In addition to never hitting Trump’s goals, the pace of deportations has slowed since January, but the president made it clear as recently as last week that he isn’t giving up the fight. Warning illegal immigrants that being deported by ICE means they will never be allowed back into the United States, Trump once again urged migrants to selfdeport, a path that leaves the door open for a legal return to the United States in the future.

While it seems reasonable to believe that even those who have come here without following proper protocol aren’t likely to be swept up by ICE at this time, assuming they are lawabiding individuals, it still is wise to be prepared for any and all possibilities. While we know that illegal immigration isn’t good for our country, our sympathies lie with those who find themselves facing uncertainty — both employers and employees. Only time will tell how this situation will resolve itself.

She spends more time in your house than your mother, your sister and your best friend. She knows your daily schedule, your eating habits, your balabusta skills (or lack thereof), and the happenings in your life.

Yet for all her intimate familiarity with your household, your own knowledge of your cleaning lady’s life might be limited to her preferred coffee-to-sugar ratio and her multiple ER visits, which, weirdly enough, tend to coincide with legal holidays.

After months of spending hours with Lourdes, often working side by side with the language barrier limiting our communication, I am curious. Who is this woman? Where does she come from, where does she go home to, and what brought her to a country whose language she doesn’t speak?

With Google Translate at my side (okay, in my cleaning lady’s pocket), I decide to find out.

I approach the conversation with some trepidation. With my previous cleaning lady, a Venezuelan native, the details were pretty horrific. Her husband had worked in a factory belonging to the opposition, and because of that, they were branded the enemy. She sobbed over my ironing board as

she described the harsh treatment she and her husband endured before the eyes of her four young children.

Lourdes, it turns out, has a far less traumatic story.

“I come from Ecuador,” she shares. “It is beautiful there, peaceful and quiet.” The problem? As with many peaceful and quiet places, “There is no work in Ecuador.” She describes a life

of extreme poverty, in which she struggled to provide for her young daughter and aging mother. “It was very hard. I tried to make food, but I could not buy many things because there was no money.”

Left with no choice, Lourdes was forced to cross the border to seek her fortunes. She shows me a picture of a smiling little girl. “My daughter, she is five. She stayed in Ecuador with my mother. I must make money so I can bring them here with me.”

“Cross the border” wasn’t quite as simple as it may sound.

“There is a guide, he helps people come, but I had to pay him fifteen thousand dollars. I took a loan from a bank.” Along with a large group of hopefuls, including some friends, she walked north.

“We walked for one month,” she writes, and I’m sure this is a Google Translate misunderstanding, because who walks for a month?

“Walk?” I repeat, marching across my kitchen. “Like this?” (What Google can’t do, sign language can.)

She nods. “Aha! Si.”

Shortly before the summer of 2024, the exhausted crowd reached big, strange, promise-filled America.

“They tell me there is work in New York,” Lourdes says. “So I came to New York.”

New York, she soon discovered, did indeed boast plenty of job opportunities. Also plenty of people, and cars and action and noise and dirt. Too much, in her opinion.

“I don’t like New York,” she tells me frankly. “It’s too busy and there is a lot of noise. Ecuador, it is much more peaceful. Also, it is very cold here.” (I almost suggest to her that there are other, saner cities in the U.S., but it’s weeks to Pesach, and suicidal I am not.)

Lourdes also misses her mother and daughter desperately. “I can’t go see them because I will have to pay another fifteen thousand dollars to come back.” She lives in an apartment in Queens with friends, working to send money back home while trying to save up enough so her family can join her one day. “I don’t know how long it will take,” she says, “I hope it will be soon.”

Prior to her arrival in New York, Lourdes had never met a Jew. “Everything is very interesting,” she says with a laugh. “Your life, your language, the way you dress. You all dress very nicely.”

This surprises me. I expected comments about basar v’chalav, maybe Shabbos, or the kids’ negel vasser she’s always taking out (sigh). Of all things, this is what struck her?

“Nicer than other communities?” I ask.

She nods, smiles wide. Yes, she says, she finds our mode of dress far more attractive than that of any of the many people she’s encountered over time.

ing on, I wonder, is Lourdes nervous about the possibility of being forced back to her hometown?

This question, when I pose it, is greeted by a very emphatic nod.

“Si,” she says to her phone. “Si, Si,” followed by a string of words in Spanish, and I don’t have to read the translation to know that she is very, very nervous. At this point, my compassionate human heart — and my self-preservation instinct — kicks in, and I explain to her that the government is primarily looking to evict criminals.

“This is what they tell me,” she replies, “but still, I am very afraid they will catch me and deport me back to Ecuador and I won’t have work.” She tells me about Juan, her neighbor in Ecuador. “He went to a city called Minneapolis, and one day he went to buy food and they caught him and took him back to Ecuador.”

LOURDES ALSO MISSES HER MOTHER AND DAUGHTER DESPERATELY. “I CAN’T GO SEE THEM BECAUSE I WILL HAVE TO PAY ANOTHER FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS TO COME BACK”

She loves working for this community because she’s treated well. “Some of my friends, they do really hard work, and they are very tired. The work here is not hard, so I am not tired.” (Yes, this was before Pesach cleaning, why do you ask?)

With the new administration in Washington cracking down on illegals, many foreigners are understandably panicked. A friend of mine was informed by her cleaning help that she could no longer come to work because “they’re already snatching people at the trains.” Another lady simply packed her bags and took the next flight out. With all that go-

Admittedly, I don’t know Juan, I have no idea what he was doing when he wasn’t buying food, and whether or not his food-buying involved payment. But I can see how a story like this could frighten the wits out of my cleaning lady, who’s now living with the terror that an innocuous trip might end on a southbound plane.

“They aren’t looking to deport honest, hardworking, people like you,” I assure her again.

For Lourdes’s sake and mine, I hope I’m right. And that the president achieves his goals, but — please, Hashem — without sacrificing my cleaning help.

We spend months meticulously scrubbing every corner of our homes in preparation for Pesach. Our cars get a thorough vacuuming, our walls are wiped down — but what about the garbage cans sitting in the driveway?

Joel Perlstein, owner of Mr. Sparkle, a professional trash can cleaning company serving New York City, shares why keeping trash bins sanitized is more important than people realize. He opens up about the unique challenges of the job and how his team is making New York smell good again, one trash can at a time.

Mr. Sparkle began…

About a year ago, when I recognized a real need for a professional trash can cleaning service in Boro Park and the surrounding areas. The idea first struck me while visiting family in London, where I saw a sleek-looking truck rolling down the street, sanitizing wheelie bins. I had never seen anything like it and found it fascinating to watch.

After some research, I discovered that no such service existed in Brooklyn. That’s when I knew I had to bring this concept to New York City. I found a manufacturer in Florida that specializes in these hightech cleaning trucks, and before long, Mr. Sparkle became Brooklyn’s very first bin cleaning company.

Today, we proudly service all five boroughs of NYC as well as the Five Towns. We stand by our company slogan: “Make New York Smell Good Again!”

When

Mr. Sparkle cleans your trash cans…

Not only are you sparing your cleaning lady from a truly unpleasant job, you might actually save money in the long run!

Many people wonder why they should pay for a professional cleaning service when their cleaning lady has been handling their bins just fine. But here’s the thing: You’re paying her, too, and cleaning trash cans is a time-consuming job. Most households have three to four bins, which can take hours of scrubbing, especially in freezing winter temperatures or sweltering summer heat. And even after all that effort, the bins still won’t be fully sanitized.

Our truck, on the other hand, can clean two bins in just 30 seconds. Using high-pressure water heated to nearly 200°F, we blast away every trace of grime while completely sanitizing the cans. All dirty water is contained inside our truck, so there’s no mess left behind on your driveway. To top it off, we finish with a fresh deodorizing spray, leaving your bins smelling clean and fresh

Surprising challenges we encounter…

Navigating traffic, especially in Brooklyn and Manhattan. With congested one-way streets, maneuvering our truck and handling trash cans can be tricky. That’s why these areas typically have overnight garbage pickup.

Scheduling is another major hurdle. We typically clean commercial bins at night, as these dumpsters fill up early in the morning. Residential bins, on the other hand, are cleaned during the day. However, our service depends on garbage collection times, so if pickups are delayed or canceled, it can throw off our entire schedule. National holidays, sanitation days and even snow days add to the complexity, forcing us to adjust routes and timing on short notice.

Services we provide…

We provide professional trash can cleaning for both residential and commercial customers. Our residential clients include private homes, apartment buildings and multi-family residences. On the commercial side, we service businesses with mini-dumpsters, including yeshivas, stores, restaurants, warehouses and groceries.

Prior to launching my business, I took a walk around my neighborhood and quickly noticed a major issue: Many groceries and restaurants have dumpsters placed right on the sidewalk, and sometimes even near their front doors. Patrons are forced to walk past unsightly, foul-smelling garbage dumpsters just to enter the establishment. In the summer, the problem is even worse, with flies swarming around the trash. Our commercial customers are relieved to finally have a solution to this persistent and unpleasant issue.

Residential areas aren’t much better. Small front gardens are often cluttered with dirty, smelly trash cans, making neighborhoods feel less clean and inviting. Many of our customers have reached out to express how grateful they are to have a service like ours. One customer, who lives in Monsey but owns a second home in Brooklyn, had been using a bin cleaning service in Monsey for years. She’d been searching for a similar service in Brooklyn and was thrilled when she found us. The amazing feedback we get from so many happy customers reminds us of why we do what we do.

Since our truck is equipped with a built-in high-pressure washer, we also offer professional pressurewashing services for decks, front porches, driveways and building facades. We were even hired by a yeshiva to clean their school buses. Unlike standard pressure washers, ours uses boiling hot water, which cleans better and faster.

The coolest thing about the truck is…

Its built-in pressure hoses. Not only do these allow us to offer professional pressure-washing services, but they also ensure that our workers can thoroughly clean the outside of the bins as well. If needed, they’ll also clean the area where the bins are typically stored, keeping everything fresh and sanitary.

The truck features a 850-gallon clean water tank and a 750-gallon wastewater tank, allowing it to operate efficiently without constant refilling. Similar to a garbage truck, it uses hydraulic arms that tilt the cans upside down and lower them until they are partially inside the tank. This design prevents dirty water from spilling onto driveways or streets.

The real magic happens next — high-pressure water heated to 200 degrees blasts away built-up grime, grease and bacteria at 1,200 psi (pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or psi for short, which indicates the force exerted over a unit area of one square inch). The heat is so intense that you can actually see steam billowing from the truck! And the best part? There’s no need for harsh chemicals — the sheer power of scalding water does all the sanitizing, leaving the bins spotless and germ-free.

Our most difficult job…

First-time customers! Their trash cans are so dirty and require a lot of work to clean. It’s always amazing to see what an improvement a thorough cleaning makes. Even though trash cans are constantly being filled with garbage bags, we can see the difference between cans that are cleaned regularly and those that are not.

During

the

Erev Pesach season…

Regular customers come first! But first-timers and one-off customers can be assured that we will be spending every spare minute handling the overflow of pre-Pesach customers.

When I started this business, I didn’t know that…

The economy was so bad. I was working hard to sign up customers, but many were hesitant to spend money on what they saw as a non-essential service. Commercial businesses, in particular, were being extra cautious with their budgets, making it even harder to gain traction.

Baruch Hashem, we found our footing by attracting discerning customers who recognized the real value of our service. One of our commercial clients, a fruit store owner, initially signed up for monthly dumpster cleanings. However, after seeing the results, he’s already planning to increase to weekly or even daily cleanings once summer arrives — to keep those pesky flies away and maintain a cleaner, fresher environment for his customers.

One of our residential customers is a bit of a neat freak. Not only did he sign up for our service to keep his own trash cans spotless, but he also hired us to clean the cans for his tenants next door.

I wish people would know…

How important it is to keep your trash cans clean. These bins are breeding grounds for insects, maggots and harmful bacteria, yet they’re often overlooked when it comes to sanitation.

Another thing most people don’t think about is that garbage collectors wear the same gloves as they go from bin to bin, unintentionally spreading germs from one house to the next. On top of that, they’re not always careful about closing the lids after emptying the cans, which leads to another frustrating issue — pedestrians tossing their own trash into your open bin.

Since the COVID pandemic, more people have become health-conscious and hygieneaware, recognizing the importance of maintaining a sanitized environment. In fact, the manufacturer of our cleaning trucks told me that in the first three months of the pandemic, he sold more bin-cleaning trucks than he had in the previous ten years.

A great bin cleaning tip…

This one is simple but effective: Make sure to properly tie the drawstrings of your garbage bags. Many people just pull the strings closed without securing them with a knot, or they tie the bag but leave too much space between the ties. This can lead to garbage spilling into the bin, creating unnecessary mess and odor.

Another bonus is that a tightly sealed bag can actually deter pedestrians from tossing their own trash into your bin. If someone opens the lid to discard their coffee cup and sees a neatly closed, well-maintained bag, they’re more likely to keep looking for a different bin — one that’s not as clean.

Interestingly, I’ve even heard from customers that when passersby spot the Mr. Sparkle sticker on a bin, they usually choose to dump it elsewhere. A small detail, but one that helps keep your bin cleaner for longer!

IN THE KITCHEN

According to the Jewish religion, we are very careful never to mix meat and dairy products. Because of this, we have separate sides of the kitchen for meat and dairy. Some of us also have a side that is neither for meat nor dairy. Please be careful to wash your hands and change your gloves and cleaning rags when going from one side to another. Thank you!

¡Gracias!

Wrap Up

Last-minute reminders

Hello again!

This is the week when many of us will be joined by company.

Do your kids help? Are you afraid of asking them for help? Do you worry they’ll feel overworked? I was. Until… Several years ago, my twelve-year-old daughter made the following comment. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the joint effort involved in making Pesach. On a random winter day, we were discussing Yomim Tovim, and my daughter said her favorite is Pesach, “because I work for it, so I enjoy it more.”

So, are we overworking our kids by handing them gloves and shmattes? No! On the contrary, it’s good for them! After all is said and done, even teenagers thrive on that feeling of accomplishment, of having completed a task, of crossing another thing off the long to-do list. Growing up, we used to label each kitchen cabinet as soon as it was done, and I remember the euphoric feeling of looking around the room and counting just how many “Clean for Pesach” labels were hanging thanks to me.

BAILA GOLDMAN

Understanding and Identifying the Underlying Core

Issues

At CanAdvance, we use the Tomatis Listening Test to uncover the root causes of the challenges—“chasing the why”—and create a tailored roadmap for growth. Families value our clear, personalized programs, which set realistic expectations and provide honest, transparent guidance for their child’s success.

It’s not tutoring. It’s not therapy. It’s foundational success!

I try to capitalize on this satisfying sense of accomplishment when I work toward family cooperation. For example, some years, we hung a large sign on the fridge with a long, windy path drawn from one corner to the other. I gave each child a sheet of dot stickers in a different color, and each time they completed a task, they stuck one of their stickers onto the path. We loved watching ourselves get to the finish line — and each child was so proud to see his/her color on the sign!

This countdown idea rewards each child individually on an emotional level — while developing that unified sense of pride that we’re all getting there together. In truth, any chart or list filled in with your kids’ initials can have the same effect.

Bottom line: Don’t be afraid to get your kids to help. The inner feeling of satisfaction they’ll feel will make Pesach their best Yom Tov yet!

PRO-TIPS

How Can I Get My Kids To Help — Willingly?

Remember that your attitude will become their attitude. Keep your smile on!

Assign jobs that match each kid’s strong points. A confident child will do the job well — and be happy to do it.

Compliment, don’t criticize! (And if you need to redo something they’ve done, do it when they won’t see.)

Treat your kids if they’re up, dressed, davened and ready to roll up their sleeves by a certain hour. A special breakfast or morning treat can go a long way.

Let your teens have “airing out” space; encourage them to spend some time on the phone or in person with their friends. A good break makes for a good helping session after — and fills their needs.

A chocolate bar or iced coffee as a random, unexpected break can be a great expression of your appreciation for their involvement.

There’s a line my kids have heard me say dozens (or hundreds) of times: “I only allow happy helpers.” I’m completely ready to be mevater on the help if it’s coming with a grumble. My kids know this, and hearing this line is usually enough to stop the complaining and get the job done cooperatively.

So, goodbye quiet. Welcome noise — hopefully only giggles, banter and fast-paced music. Oh, the pleasures of working with a crew!

Let’s get started!

KITCHEN, PART I

I don’t know about your cabinets, but sometimes I find random things in funny places as I clean out mine. I like to ask myself, “If I needed this item, would I remember I already have it? Will I remember where it is?” If the answer is yes, put it where it belongs. If the answer is no, the item goes straight to the bin.

I also ask myself if I’ve used over the last year whatever item it is that I’m encountering while cleaning. Space is at a prime in the kitchen, and extra gadgets or serving utensils — although I love collecting them — simply do not belong there. (Sometimes a newer gadget or appliance takes over an old one. Since I got a Betty Crocker, my sandwich toaster no longer deserves kitchen space. Consolidate!)

DECK W IT H

The simplicity you love and the design you crave, combined. Set your table in just one go with permanently attached liners. No more double decking, effortless class. Setting gone easy!

WEEK 1 WEEK 2

3

CABINETS

The process of cleaning kitchen cabinets is rather messy. The first step is making sure the counters and table are clear, ready to host the assortment of stuff that will come piling out — some of which won’t be going back in right away.

Do a dry cleaning of each cabinet or drawer first. I find my hand-vacuum super handy at this stage. It gets into the crevices and corners easily (and makes cleaning so much more fun for the kids!).

Next, use Windex, Soft Scrub, dish-detergent solution, or any other fresh-smelling soap you like to clean all surfaces.

Miracle sponge can be helpful on stubborn stains.

If you don’t have a Pesach kitchen, or if you rely on using some year-round cabinets for Pesach, it doesn’t pay to invest too much time in reorganizing your cabinets. At this point, you can already place any objects you don’t need until after Pesach in the place they’ll be stored over Pesach.

Picture Perfect

My daughter snaps a picture of each cabinet before she empties it. Then, when putting everything back, she knows exactly how I like it to be organized.

SMALL APPLIANCES

I like to clean my small appliances the last time I use them before Pesach — not necessarily when I’m up to the cabinet they live in. For example, after I put up that last batch of challah before Pesach, I’ll take the time to clean the mixer.

Toothpicks, Q-tips, a toothbrush and a magic sponge — they all come to good use in the crevices of a mixer, food processor, toaster, etc.

SPARE FRIDGE/FREEZER

If you’re lucky enough to have more than one, clean your spare freezer or fridge and line it now. You can now comfortably bring in Pesach foods as soon as you’re ready!

4 WEEK 5

DINING ROOM

The first apartment I made Pesach in had an open dining room plan. Actually, the dining room was just about the entire house! We needed to leave it for last. But if your dining room is a separate room — bonus points if it has doors — now’s the time to get it Seder-ready.

TABLE AND CHAIRS

This is one of the most tedious pre-Pesach chores — and also one of the most important ones. You’ll be sitting here on Seder night!

Wash all wooden parts with mild soap. You can choose a commercial furniture cleaner or use a homemade solution of dishwashing soap, water and a drop of lemon juice.

Vacuum upholstery, pretreat any stains (I use regular laundry stain removers) and then carefully wash the entire thing.

Don’t use too much water, and don’t rub stains too vigorously!

If you have any spare folding tables or chairs that you’ll be using over Pesach, make sure to clean them well too.

COUCH

A thorough vacuum is the most important part of the job.

You can sprinkle some baking soda to deodorize, let sit for a few minutes, and then vacuum again.

A professional steam cleaner works wonders on a fabric couch, but if you don’t have one, spot clean stains using liquid laundry detergent or mild cleanser. Blot — don’t scrub!

On leather, a damp shmatte with mild soap is most effective.

BREAKFRONT

Don’t wait for the last minute, when there’s so much to be done, to polish your silver. Hopefully, your breakfront has a good air seal that will keep your silver shining.

Silver pieces that will be used on Pesach may need to be kashered or rinsed with boiling water. Make sure to use kosher l’Pesach silver polish or a new container of polish.

Window treatment companies suggest cleaning drapes once a year, which aligns perfectly with our pre-Pesach cleaning system. Freshly washed curtains really make a difference in making the entire room feel fresh.

If your curtains are hard to remove, do a good vacuum. You can also steam-clean them.

Some curtains will do well in your washing machine, but many should be sent to the dry cleaners or professionals.

FOR WINNING $200 AT MYSELF LINGERIE! Please contact The Boro Park View to claim your prize.

COAT CLOSET

Like any closet in your house, remove, scrub and declutter before putting everything back inside. Organize your storage bins containing scarves, gloves, reflectors, rain bonnets, etc. You can also clean out the pockets of coats/jackets that won’t be worn until Pesach.

Pro Tip: It’s best to store winter coats in a cool, dry, dark place over the spring and summer months. If you’re tight on space, use storage bags.

We’re getting there…

Next week, we’ll continue moving the chometz out with more deep cleaning in the kitchen. See you then!

I completed Week 3 of The Boro Park View’s Annual Pesach Cleaning Challenge!

QUICK! RUN OUTSIDE! THE BUILDING IS COLLAPSING!

TATTE! MISHA! GET OUT! SAVE YOURSELVES!

ZUSHA!!!
ZUSHA!!!

RECAP: THE RUBINOVS ARE TRAPPED IN THE BUILDING. PEDRO WANTS TO TAKE THE KIDS HOME AND LEAVE MR. RUBINOV BEHIND, WHILE KEEPING THE TREASURE FOR HIMSELF. SUDDENLY, THE FLOOR UNDERNEATH HIM BEGINS TO SINK, AND THE CEILING TREMBLES.

LOOKS LIKE THE ENTIRE BUILDING COLLAPSED! I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M ALIVE.

I JUST CAN’T GET AWAY FROM YOU, HUH? SO, YOU’RE ANOTHER RUBINOV. YOU TRICKED ME. VERY CLEVER.

I DIDN’T MEAN TO DECEIVE YOU.

I ONLY WANTED TO SAVE MY FATHER AND BROTHER.

BAH, WHAT DO I CARE? THE MAIN THING IS — I GOT THE TREASURE.

WHAT GOOD WILL THE TREASURE DO YOU WHEN YOU’RE BURIED UNDER THE RUBBLE?

I’LL FIND A WAY… WAIT, WHAT?! NO WAY! WE WERE TRICKED! EVEN MY GREATGREATGRANDFATHER DIDN’T LEAVE ME ANYTHING?! I —

OH, NOT ANOTHER JEW!
BARUCH HASHEM.

BITS OF WITS

A LITTLE BIT OF SCIENCE WONDER

The koala is the animal that sleeps the most in a 24-hour period, catching winks between 18 and 22 hours each day. On the other end of the slumbering spectrum is the giraffe, which requires an average of 30 minutes of sleep each day.

THE CHANGING FACE OF:

Continually and continuously are two words that sound almost the same but have different meanings, resulting in frequently wrong usage. When you do something continuously, it is constant, without end. When you do something continually, you are doing it frequently. You start, and you stop, but you keep starting again.

FLOWER POWER

Use the following letters to list 5 words, each using 7 letters and up. Only the center letter must be used, and letters can be repeated. Bonus points for pangrams (words that use all seven letters).

TANACH TEASER

Triplets are born on the same day, and yet each bris milah will take place on a different day. How is that possible?

One boy was born on Friday before shkiah, so his bris will take place the next Friday. The second triplet was born bein hashmashos, and because of the doubt, his bris cannot supersede Shabbos and will therefore be postponed to Sunday. The third triplet is born after nightfall, and his bris will take place on Shabbos.

Why call it an umbrella if you can use the much more fun word bumbershoot, especially if you’re the kind of person who brings their bumbershoot with them all the time, just in case?

Following the September 11 attacks, the U.S. skies were eerily silent as all civilian and commercial flights were grounded. However, there was one plane that was granted special clearance on September 12: a private jet that left San Diego carrying lifesaving antivenom for a critically ill snakebite victim in Florida. It was escorted by two fighter jets.
