Welcome
Welcome, fellow livestock enthusiasts, to the second edition of the Midwest Aberdeen Association breeders’ directory. We are, once again, excited to present this set of members and advertisers to you. We are confident that they will help you expand your cattle network, no matter which part of the country you live in. As you browse our directory, you will find outstanding Aberdeen and Moderator producers who can provide you with superior genetic opportunities, offer their knowledge and experience, and share their passion for this outstanding breed. The Aberdeen breed truly has a lot to offer. These cattle provide tremendous calving ease and calf vigor, resulting in higher survival rates with less labor. Our breed’s efficiency is second to note: You’ll consistently see cows that wean calves at 50+ percent of their own body weights, production females thriving on less pasture acreage than their non-Aberdeen counterparts, and calves that perform well in a feedlot setting and hang high-value carcasses. Simply stated, Aberdeen genetics will work for you. We are proud to host numerous Aberdeen gatherings right here in the Midwest. Our shows each year at Iowa State Fair (IA), World Beef Expo (WI), and American Royal (MO) are some of the most elite Aberdeen events in the country. This year, we are fortunate to also be hosting the National Junior Aberdeen Show - June 19-23 in Ames, Iowa. We invite you to join us at any and all of these events. We’d be glad to see you. We also invite you to become a part of our growing membership. For the most up-to-date information about our association and its upcoming activities, follow us on Facebook or check out our brand new website, midwestaberdeenassociation.com. If you have any questions about the Aberdeen breed, are interested in joining the Midwest Aberdeen Association, or simply want to talk cattle, give one of our directors or members a call. We look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, The Midwest Aberdeen Association Board of Directors

Breeding Season Basics
Each breeding season, progressive cattle producers face a number of questions. As the demand for quality genetics increases, so does the demand for artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET). It seems that there are more options than ever, whether you’re considering new synchonization protocols, the AI sires available, or flushing options. No matter your program or breeding philosophies, there are a few simple things you can do to maximize your conception rates, and thereby improve your bottom line.
Build Open Relationships with Reproductive Professionals
Your veterinarian, embryologist, and AI technician are highly trained professionals. They can provide you with crucial information regarding animals’ reproductive health. Visit with them about the synchronization protocols that will work best in your operation. Set a schedule with your technicians and veterinarians that works well for all involved parties. Understand that their time is valuable, and have your animals and facilities ready when they arrive – and pay your bills on time. For many of us, breeding season is a cooperative effort, and these are people you want on your team.
Heat Check, Heat Check, Heat Check
Over the years, this one tool has helped to boost the conception rate in my family’s herd immensely. Know the signs of heat, and watch for them regularly. Even if you aren’t breeding yet, mark your females’ heats on a calendar or notepad so you know when to expect the next heat. Like baking cookies, timing is everything.
Implement a Mineral and Nutrition Program
By supplementing your stock with a fertility-aiding vitamin and mineral program before you begin breeding, you will increase conception rates. We start ours about a month before calving, then switch back to summer pasture mineral at the end of breeding season. Increasing the energy level in your feeds prior to breeding will also help to bolster your animals’ reproductive systems.
Utilize Low Stress Handling
Work your cattle in a calm manner. Have your facilities in proper working order, and set up to simplify the flow of cattle into and out of them. The quieter and easier you are with your breeding females, the less stress they will experience, leading to an increased chance of conception. Great Grandpa always told me: “Treat your stock right, and they will treat you right.”
Maintain Adequate Body Condition
This is a year-round project. Cows and heifers that are in optimal condition at the time of calving will almost all be cycling within 80 days and have a highly increased chance of settling on the first service. Above all, continue your learning process and, if needed, try new practices to give you and your program better results. Best of luck in your next breeding season! s Written by Shea Esser. In 1998, the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center began a project to decrease cow size. When the decreased size “sucked the muscle right out of the cattle,” they were forced to regroup. In 2004, they began using Aberdeen bulls in the project, as they met the criteria of Center having at least 1.3 square inches of ribeye per 100 pounds of live body weight. For the next four found they they showused an increase of 37% in pounds beef years, Aberdeen bulls on theirofheifers. Theseand slides birth weights below pounds, the dystocia rate Ringwall’s was just over 2%. are from Dr. Kris presentation on the research.
The resulting male calves were sent to a custom feed yard as yearlings. They finished at just under 1250# on average, with a frame score of 4.8. They achieved 83% Choice or higher, 84% Yield Grade 3 or better, and had an average daily gain of 3.1 pounds per day. Meanwhile, the F1 Aberdeen-cross (Moderator) females were retained in the herd. The cows at the Center were all bred to the same Red Angus sires. The following charts highlight some of their findings.

Duff Tank Semen Available
Catalog Special only $20/Straw Contact Doug for Purchase 701-710-0144 The name Duff Tank is definitely fitting. This guy is just plain powerful. Not only is this stout made, easy fleshing bull phenotypically impressive, but he is backed by some great genetics. The cow family behind him has been extremely influential in the Duff herd. He is sure to inject some maternal cow power in anyone’s program. -Addison Magill, SDSU Livestock Judging team
