WELCOME
Welcome, fellow livestock enthusiasts, to the third edition of the Midwest Aberdeen Association breeders’ directory. We are, once again, excited to present this set of members and advertisers to you. We are confident this information will help you expand your cattle network, no matter which part of the country you live in. As you browse our directory, you will find outstanding Aberdeen and Moderator producers who can provide you with superior genetic opportunities, offer their knowledge and experience, and share their passion for this outstanding breed. The Aberdeen breed truly has a lot to offer. These cattle provide tremendous calving ease and calf vigor, resulting in higher survival rates with less labor input. Our breed’s efficiency is second to none: You’ll consistently see cows that wean calves at 50+ percent of their own body weights, production females thriving on less pasture acreage per unit than their non-Aberdeen counterparts, and calves that perform well in a feedlot setting and hang high-value carcasses. Simply stated, Aberdeen genetics will work for you. We are proud to host numerous Aberdeen gatherings right here in the Midwest. Our shows each year at the Iowa State Fair, World Beef Expo (Wisconsin), and American Royal (Missouri) are some of the most elite Aberdeen events in the country. For the second year in a row, we are fortunate to also be hosting the National Junior Aberdeen Show. It takes place June 24 through 29 in Lawrence, Kansas. We invite you and your family join us at any or all of these events. We’d be glad to see you. If you aren’t already a member, we invite you to join our growing regional association. For the most up-to-date information about Midwest Aberdeen and its upcoming activities, follow us on Facebook or check out our website. If you have any questions about the Aberdeen breed, are interested in joining our membership, or simply want to talk cattle, give one of our directors a call. We look forward to hearing from you.

SHOW AWARD
PROGRAMS
SHOW BULL & FEMALE OF THE YEAR These awards will recognize the animals who compete at Midwest Aberdeen Association sponsored shows and are continually selected as Class Winners, Division Champions and Overall Champions of these shows. Points will be allocated based on placings and total number of cattle entered at each show.
Requirements: All Midwest Aberdeen Association members and Midwest Aberdeen junior members who are dues-paying members by 5 pm on Sunday, August 12 will be eligible. Cattle must remain in member’s name prior to the Iowa State Fair show and through the American Royal show. The Midwest Aberdeen Show Committee will oversee the program and place points on all eligible animals following each respective show. Following the American Royal show, points will be tallied to determine highest points for: Fullblood Female, Fullblood Bull, Percentage Female, and Percentage Bull. Owner(s) of each animal will be responsible for providing the Show Committee with one backdrop photo of that animal from one of the three sponsored shows. Midwest Aberdeen Association will place a one-page ad in the following year’s directory, recognize winners on the web page, and provide awards during the following year’s Iowa State Fair, when it is anticipated to have the Association’s Annual Meeting. For partnerships, only one award will be given.
HERDSMAN OF THE YEAR
This award will recognize a herdsman who is a member of the Midwest Aberdeen Association and promotes Aberdeen cattle in and out of the show ring in a positive manner. Decision criteria include but are not limited to: • Quantity of cattle presented at sponsored shows • Quality of cattle displayed/shown and overall placings • Professional appearance of stalls and displays • Utilization of animal pedigree signs • Interaction with other exhibitors and breeders and a willingness to share knowledge of cattle • Assistance, cooperation, and willingness to aid in smooth-running shows • Mentorship of Junior Members Following each show, Show Committee members will provide notes on candidates. Upon completion of the American Royal show, a Midwest Aberdeen Association Herdsman of the Year will be selected. The winner will be highlighted in the following year’s directory, recognized on the Association website, and presented with an award at the following year’s Iowa State Fair at the Association’s Annual Meeting.

TATTOOING GUIDELINES
American Aberdeen Association (AAA) rules require that all registered animals carry a tattoo in one or both ears. Tattoos must consist of the original owner’s herd letters, an individual animal identification number, and a year letter.
HERD LETTERS
Herd letters are assigned to each member when application for membership is submitted, and to non-members when they first register an Aberdeen with AAA. Herd letters must be a minimum of two and not more than three letters. When registering a calf born to its natural mother, the herd letters of the owner of the dam at the time of birth must be used, and that individual must register the calf before its ownership can be transferred. An embryo calf must be tattooed and registered with the herd letters of the owner of the calf at the time of registration. Under no circumstances should you attempt to register an animal with herd letters that have not been approved and assigned to you by the Registry Office, or with the herd letters of another member or breeder.
INDIVIDUAL I.D. NUMBER
No two animals can carry the same tattoo, so your individual identification numbering system is important. The individual ID number can be a minimum of two and not more than four digits, including the year letter.
YEAR LETTER
Part of the required Aberdeen tattoo must be a letter indicating the animal’s year of birth. Usually, it is the last digit in the tattoo. The upcoming year-letters are as follows:
2019 - G 2020 - H 2021 - J
2022 - K 2023 - L 2024 - M
Note: The letters I, O, Q and V are not used in the year-letter succession.
EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE TATTOOS
The tattoo should be arranged with the Herd Letters followed by the Individual ID Number then the Year Letter. In these examples: The herd letters are ALR, the animal’s individual ID is 1, and the year letter is X.
TISSUE SAMPLING
With advancements in DNA collection, tissue sampling is becoming very popular with producers. Scientific advancement in the mapping of livestock genomes, along with continued development of affordable analytics has changed the sampling industry. Why Tissue Sampling?
Samples can be collected in seconds with minimal animal restraint. A single-squeeze motion collects a clean, uncontaminated sample, minimizing distress to the animal. The genetic material is then sealed in a specially designed preservative for shipment, ensuring success of the on-farm sample. Tissue contains a large quantity of high quality DNA for genetic analysis, yielding excellent lab results with minimal retesting. Tissue sampling can be used for: • Parentage Verification • Genetic Selection • BVD Diagnostics 2019-20 Membership Directory

ABERDEEN BREEDING PROGRAMS
The American Aberdeen Association provides four different registration programs to help you achieve your cattle breeding goals.
FULL BLOOD
MODERATOR®
These cattle trace back to the Triangie Research Center in Australia and the original Angus purchased from Canada.
Both the sire and dam of a Moderator® must be registered with the American Aberdeen Association. Moderator shall be added to registration papers for these animals.
100% Aberdeen
ABERDEEN PLUS 25 - 87.5% Aberdeen
These are percentage Aberdeen cattle with the non-Aberdeen portion coming from registered American Angus or American Red Angus. The submitting member must supply the registered, genetic defect-free pedigree and appropriate fee to enter the foundation animal into the Aberdeen Plus registry. This member must also be the recorded owner of the dam at the time the calf was born. A flush report is required for all embryo transfer (ET) calves. Multi-generational cattle are accepted, as long as the breed and percentage criteria are met. Either the sire or dam (or both) of the first generation Aberdeen Plus must be registered with American Aberdeen.
50 - 87.499% Aberdeen
MODERATOR PLUS® 25 - 50% Aberdeen
A Moderator Plus® has Aberdeen genetics on at least one side of the pedigree, and must be registered with the American Aberdeen Association. Either the sire or dam (or both) of a Moderator Plus® must also be registered with the association. Moderator Plus shall be added to registration papers for these animals. Grass Master Cattle BIG GAIN WITHOUT BIG FRAME!
Not all moderate-framed cattle are made the same. No matter what segment of the beef industry you are breeding for, our cattle need to gain to be profitable. At GMC, our Aberdeen Moderators are achieving frame moderation goals while remarkably increasing weight per dayof-age from birth to 12 months. These multi-generation calves are gaining 2.2 to as high as 3.3 pounds every day they are alive, measured to 12 months, which is grass turn-out time here. Calves are weaned at 8 to 9 months off the cow with no creep and usually foraging crop residue the final 3 months on the cow. They are fed a grain-free, high-nutrient ration through winter. It has taken 17 years of genetic selection with the help of carcass ultrasound and strict culling to maintain calving ease, while increasing gain with muscle and flesh with modest frame increase. Most of our nations’ commercial cow herd show big gains due to big frame growth. They require one-third more land usage and are certainly not a fit for high-quality grass-fed beef. Our mission has been, and will be, to produce calving-ease cattle that gain muscle and flesh on forage in a timely manner. GMC Aberdeens will increase ribeye per 100 wt., and demonstrate higher marbling with fine, textured, tender end product. Stop in and pick your low-maintenance champions, including jaw-dropping red fullblood and Moderators by Ducati, Rob Roy and others.

In the words of 2018 National Aberdeen Show judge P.J. Budler about General Jackson: “True Aberdeen character. ... Get behind him to appreciate his shape, chest floor and base width. ... He’s a bull that can get out and move out of his shoulder and has a strong hind leg.”
