A MESSAGE FROM THE WSA PRESIDENT Dear Shorthorn Friends, 2020 has forced most of us to look back and think about many things. When writing this President’s Message, I decided to do the same and reflect on my time served on the WSA Board of Directors. I have served on the WSA Board for six years, including four of those years as President of the Board. Here is a list of some of the accomplishments that the volunteers on your WSA Board of directors have achieved in the past six years: > Three past WJSA Members were nominated to hold seats on the WSA Board. One of these individuals has assumed the vital role of Secretary. > The WSA Directory evolved into a new format with widespread distribution. > The difficult task of choosing a long-term State Show site was finalized. > The WSA bylaws were overhauled. > WSA and WJSA’s financials were streamlined into QuickBooks operations. > WSA became a 501C3. > The WSA website changed to a new format. > The WSA email notification system was streamlined. > Policies have been put into place to increase funding for junior activities and scholarships. > WSA and WJSA collaboration continues to evolve in order to benefit both organizations. > Wisconsin hosted the 2018 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference. > While faced with overwhelming obstacles, determined WSA Board members, WJSA members and volunteers shifted gears and carried out an
incredibly well planned, organized, and carefully executed 2020 Wisconsin State Shorthorn Show. These are not my accomplishments. These are some of the achievements of the hard working volunteers who put an incredible amount of time and energy into YOUR organization. To my fellow Board members: Thank you! Thank you for your work and dedication to WSA and WJSA! It has been my privilege to work with such dedicated individuals who, when faced with repeated adversities, have been able to put aside conflict and strife, to get the job done, and to come back to the table as Shorthorn friends. As WSA and WJSA move into 2021, we all have to look forward and continue the onward momentum of our organizations. This year’s WSA Annual Meeting will be held on a new date at a new location. Complicated decisions will need to be made for the future planning of the WSA State Show. WSA and WJSA need you, the members. We need your continued support, compassion, and involvement. 2020 has shown us all that we can rise to the occasion. Let’s make 2021 a year of new beginnings and new accomplishments, not only for ourselves as individuals, but for WSA and WJSA as well. Thank you for allowing me to serve on the WSA Board of Directors for the past six years, it has been my privilege. I look forward to seeing you again in the barn aisles! Sincerely, Dennis Schlimgen

WJSA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Shorthorn Enthusiasts, Hello, my name is Courtney Stelzer. I recently completed my term as the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association President. I have been blessed with the opportunity to be an active WJSA member for the last five years, where I have served on the WJSA Board and as a Wisconsin Shorthorn Lassie Princess. I got started in the Shorthorn breed when I purchased my first Shorthorn steer, Prince. I had been showing cattle a few years prior to Prince but fell in love with him for his docile temperament and roan color. He also won Grand Champion Ultrasound and Live Market Steer at my county fair that year. After a fun and successful year with him, I knew this was a breed I wanted to expand in. My sister and I now have our own small herd of Shorthorn cattle consisting of sixteen cows. I am currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls where I am majoring in 20 > Wisconsin Shorthorn Association
Animal Science with an emphasis in Meat Animal and a minor in Agricultural Business. I will be graduating this fall. Although this year is very different than others, WJSA members were still able to participate and compete in a few events. We recently completed the National Junior Shorthorn Show in Abilene, Texas and the Wisconsin State Shorthorn Show in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Both events were great opportunities to represent WJSA! As my career as a junior comes to an end, I am thankful and blessed to have been a part of the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association. I am excited and looking forward to watching where WJSA goes next. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask! I am happy to help, and the WJSA Board is here to serve you! Best Wishes, Courtney Stelzer 2019-2020 WJSA President

FRIENDS OF WJSA Each year, the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association recognizes a supporter of the organization and its members. For their unwavering support of youth in the Shorthorn industry and their belief in the WJSA, we are proud to announce this year’s Friends of WJSA.
Dick, Marj & Rick Colby Oakwood Farms Grand Marsh, WI Wisconsin Dells, WI
Dick, Marj and Rick Colby of Grand Marsh and Wisconsin Dells, respectively, were selected as the 2020 Friends of WJSA. The Colbys have been long-time members of WSA, strong supporters of WJSA, and generous contributors to the WSA Lassie program. Their Shorthorn herd began in the fall of 1981 when Dick and Marj’s daughters, Cathy and Jeanne, took steers to their county fair. A couple years later, they got their first Shorthorn breeding stock. That was the beginning of what is now a herd of 75 head. Dick, Marj and Rick are owners of Oakwood Farms, a 300-acre Centennial Farm that has been in their family since 1860. In addition to Shorthorns, they are also cash crop farmers. At one time, they rented and owned up to 600 acres. Dick is still involved in feeding cows, planting crops, and field work. Rick manages the cattle and other farm operations. Together, Dick and Rick work to make the breeding decisions for their herd. Marj is the farm’s record keeper. They utilize artificial insemination and embryo transfer within their herd. Rick owns a farm a couple miles down the road from Dick and Marj. They have shown cattle at the county, district, state, and national levels. Some of their proudest show ring accomplishments were having the 1990 Champion Bred & Owned Shorthorn Bull at the Wisconsin State Fair and having a Grand Champion Female at the Minnesota State Fair in the 1990s. The Colby family members are no strangers to the WSA Board of Directors. Dick served as President of the WSA Board in 1991, Marj from 1996 to 1998, 22 > Wisconsin Shorthorn Association
and Rick from 2001 to 2003. Marj again held a seat on the WSA Board of Directors from 2013 to 2018 and was the WSA representative to the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association from 2019 to 2020. For many years, Oakwood Farms has taken Shorthorn cattle to Farm Technology Days, representing WSA and the Shorthorn breed in the Beef Tent. The entire Colby family are huge Wisconsin Badgers fans. They are also all UW-Madison alumni. Dick was an ag teacher for 35 years in the Lake Mills and Adams-Friendship school districts. Marj worked as a teacher in the Wisconsin Dells School District, at Mid-State Technical College, and at the Oxford Prison-UW Baraboo Center. Rick holds a degree in Meat and Animal Science and works off the farm at Penda in Portage. Cathy is a teacher at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids, and Jeanne works at Lands’ End in Plover. Dick and Marj have seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Dick and Marj both have an affinity for the WSA Lassie program, as both their daughters were Lassie Queens. Cathy (Colby) Hunn was the 198788 Wisconsin Lassie Queen, and Jeanne (Colby) Challoner was the Wisconsin Lassie Queen in 1985-86. When the Wisconsin Lassie program was resurrected in 2009, Dick and Marj graciously funded the purchase of WSA’s new queen kilt. The Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association would like to thank Dick, Marj and Rick for their constant encouragement, financial assistance, and genuine support for the WJSA, WSA and the WSA Lassie program. Congratulations on being the 2020 Friends of WJSA!
