Midwest Aberdeen Association

Welcome

Welcome, fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen, to the first ever Midwest Aberdeen Association breeders’ directory. It is with great excitement that we have put together this set of members and advertisers. We hope that it will help you increase your network of cattle contacts, no matter which part of the country you live in. As you turn the pages of our directory, you will find outstanding Aberdeen and Moderator breeders who would be happy to hear from you and can provide you with some of the best genetic opportunities available in our breed. The Aberdeen breed truly has a lot to offer. These cattle excel at providing tremendous calving ease and calf vigor, resulting in higher survival rates with less labor. Our breed’s efficiency is second to none: You’ll consistently see cows that wean calves at 50+ percent of their own body weights, production females thriving on less pasture acreage than their non-Aberdeen counterparts, and calves that perform well in a feedlot and hang high-value carcasses. Simply stated, Aberdeen genetics will work for you. If the show ring interests you, we’ve got that covered too. We are proud to host a number of junior and open shows right here in the Midwest, including the 2018 National Junior Aberdeen Show in Ames, Iowa. We invite you to come take a look — and to show alongside us — at any of these events. We’d be glad to see you. We also invite you to become members of our growing association. For the most up-to-date information about upcoming activities and the benefits of being a Midwest Aberdeen member, follow us on Facebook or check out our new website, midwestaberdeenassociation.com. Lastly, if you have any questions about the Aberdeen breed, the Midwest Aberdeen Association, or simply want to talk cattle, give one of our members or directors a call. We would love to hear from you. Sincerely, The Midwest Aberdeen Association Board of Directors

The Aberdeen Advantage These real-world cattle can solve real problems on your ranch.

A perfect heifer bull will: • eliminate calving difficulty, thus reducing labor and stress during calving. • produce calves that are vigorous at birth and will get up and go. • drastically improve the breed-back rate on first calving heifers. • produce marketable calves with eye appeal.

Testimonials

from the Spring 2014 Power Plus sale catalog

“After many sleepless nights over the last twenty plus years of using multiple registered Angus sires, I finally came to the realization that there had to be a better way to calve heifers. Just like many of you, in order to minimize the loss of baby calves out of first-calf heifers, I lived with them. I would move them in close to the barn and check them round the clock, night and day, and be plum worn out by the time calving season was over. “Three years ago, I finally decided there had to be a better solution to this madness. So I began a search for the best low maintenance, easy calving Angus genetics available to use on my virgin heifers. After countless hours and many miles, we came across some quality Aberdeen Angus. Over the last three years, the result has been very satisfying. Here at Power Plus, we have calved over 200 head of virgin heifers bred to Aberdeen bulls. Additionally, we have supplied hundreds of straws of semen, and we also leased out numerous Aberdeen bulls to several of our long-time commercial customers in order to test the results over a larger number of cattle in multiple states. “We no longer bring our heifers up close to the barn to calve them; they stay out on grass just like the cows during calving. We only check them once a day to tag babies. Birth complications have been

minimal, as the birth weights have ranged from 50 to 69 pounds. The calves are vigorous and grow very well. The two lines of Angus genetics are so distantly related that, when mated together, the result has added hybrid vigor. “We have harvested over 100 head of the calves thus far. They have finished on 30% less feed and in considerably fewer days while also achieving a high percentage of Choice and Prime. “How can you argue with that? Low birth weights, performance, and tons of eye appeal.” Newley Hutchinson • Chain Ranch Canton, Oklahoma Testimonial from February 2016

“We’re calving out 600 heifers. Normally, we use the best calving ease EPD sires in the Red Angus and Angus breeds. We usually assist 20% of the calves - 120 births. This year, we went all Aberdeen. I just assisted my fourth calf. He had a leg back.” For calving ease that really works, For hybrid vigor that saves time and money, For a higher breed-back rate on first-calf heifers,

use Aberdeen bulls.

To eliminate sleepless nights, To allow you to calve your heifers with your cows, To produce vigorous calves that get up and go,

use Aberdeen bulls.

Unassisted calves. Low birth weights. High vigor. It’s what you can expect when using fullblood Aberdeen bulls.

Shown just 45 days after breeding season, this fullblood Aberdeen bull maintained excellent body condition and will produce efficient progeny. 6

(weaning weight) produced per acre when using Lowline Moderator females bred to Red Angus bulls. These slides are from Dr. Kris Ringwall’s presentation on the research.

In 1998, the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center began a project to decrease cow size. When the decreased size “sucked the muscle right out of the cattle,” they were forced to regroup. In 2004, they began using Aberdeen bulls in the project, as they met the criteria of Center having at least 1.3 square inches of ribeye per 100 pounds of live body weight. For the next four found they they showused an increase of 37% in pounds beef years, Aberdeen bulls on theirofheifers. The resulting male calves were sent to a custom feed yard as yearlings. They finished at just under 1250# on average, with a frame score of 4.8. They achieved 83% Choice or higher, 84% Yield Grade 3 or better, and had an average daily gain of 3.1 pounds per day. Meanwhile, the F1 Aberdeen-cross (Moderator) females were retained in the herd. The cows at the Center were all bred to the same Red Angus sires. The following charts highlight some of their findings.

Duff Tank Semen Available

Catalog Special only $20/Straw Contact Doug for Purchase 701-710-0144 The name Duff Tank is definitely fitting. This guy is just plain powerful. Not only is this stout made, easy fleshing bull phenotypically impressive, but he is backed by some great genetics. The cow family behind him has been extremely influential in the Duff herd. He is sure to inject some maternal cow power in anyone’s program. -Addison Magill, SDSU Livestock Judging team
