Cultivate Your Mind Go For The Gold
by Chance Ujazdowski Every four years, the world’s most elite winter athletes compete in the famed Olympic games. Throughout our great country, Americans tune in for two weeks to cheer on the red, white and blue – even when the Games are on the opposite side of the globe. We find renewed excitement in a sport we haven’t seen since the previous Olympics. We revel in the stories of the athletes’ backgrounds and the host country’s history. We celebrate each medal, no matter the color, that our countrymen and women bring home. The Olympics unite us like no other sporting event can. As livestock producers, buyers and exhibitors, we should take a few lessons from the Olympic games and the competitors who make them famous. While we likely won’t land any product sponsorships or national TV time, we can all strive to be at the top of our games. Much like it does for the best athletes in the world, it will take practice, dedication and decision-making. Here are a few ways you can get to the spotlight like an Olympian.
Find Your Sport
Are you built for speed or distance, snow or ice, precision or power? One of your biggest and most important decisions will be choosing a direction. When selecting your program’s path, consider things like your facilities, your personal schedule, your access to economical feed, and your market availability. Ensure that your resources match up with your plans before you become too invested, and reevaluate periodically.
Dedicate Yourself
Every Olympic athlete shows persistent commitment to his or her sport. They complete countless training runs, giving them the experience to handle a variety of situations. They cooperate with coaches and teammates, allowing them to see their game from a different perspective. They press their personal limits, maximizing their potential for success. Imagine how your operation could benefit from similar actions.
Join A Team
What fan wasn’t rooting for the United States men’s curling team? I certainly was – and not because that’s the only sport I might be in good enough shape for. Team sport or individual, Olympians benefit greatly from the support and experience of their national teammates. The livestock industry is similar in many ways. Your fellow livestock enthusiasts can provide valuable insight, connections and motivation. Fortunately, you can join countless teams to increase your network: state associations, breeders groups, show clubs and more.
Trust The Pros
Even the best athletes need help. To maximize achievement, they rely on managers, trainers, equipment technicians and more. Your operation will benefit from doing the same. Nutritionists, hoof trimmers and veterinarians will optimize your animals’ health. Photographers, fitters and graphic designers can provide you with a professional look. Coaches, mentors and even parents offer experience-based knowledge and hands-on learning opportunities. No matter your operation, there are professionals and seasoned veterans who can help you succeed.
4
If your animals are like ours, they are far from Olympic-level athletes. They need us to be at our best, so they can do the same.
Get Qualified
You’ll never be Cinderella if you don’t make it to the ball. So how are you going to get there? Set standards for your program to ensure you’re meeting your goals. Are your conception rates high enough? Are your feeders growing properly? Are you staying within your budget on show animals? Whenever possible, examine your progress to ensure you’re on track for a finish on the podium.
Be Adaptable
Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin set a goal of winning five gold medals in Pyeongchang, only to have the weather limit her competition to just three events. It happens, no matter how big the stage. Your plans will occasionally need to be adjusted, so be prepared. Build good relationships with your feed suppliers. Keep your calf jack in an accessible location. Know how to treat common illnesses or injuries. Be ready for anything.
Expand Your Horizons
Does the name Ester Ledecka sound familiar? She’s a Czech snowboarder who won 2018 gold – in alpine skiing. She then followed it up with a snowboard gold, becoming the first-ever to win gold in multiple sports. She increased her skill set, and her name will forever be etched in Winter Olympic history. There are many ways you can do the same: Test a new piece of equipment, research a new marketing avenue, or study materials on a production technique that interests you. If you think your operation would benefit from an added feature, give it a try. It might take your program to the next level. The 2018 Winter Olympics are in the books. All of the medals have been awarded, and all of the anthems have been played. For fans like me, it will be another four years until that many winter athletes congregate on my TV screen. For the athletes, though, their sporting season is still in full swing. Even when the competitions end, their focus will remain. By treating our livestock enterprises with such focus and dedication, we can propel ourselves towards that qualifying run – and maybe even a gold medal. s

The Other Side of the Fence Small Town Throwdown by Garret Carnahan
I want to start by giving a quick update on Clyde. My lady fans will be plenty excited to hear that I’m single again. With the girlfriend out of the picture, I had to make a decision on what to do with “our” horse. Initially, I figured I would keep him. That way, if one of my future ex-girlfriends were an equine fanatic, I wouldn’t have to buy another. If that was going to happen, though, I had better be sure I could ride him. Long story short, I got bucked off twice more, and now I have a horse for sale. Turns out that I’m not much of a cowboy after all. Clyde or no Clyde, though, I occasionally feel like I’m living in the days of Wyatt Earp. Possessing a quick wit and a sharp tongue now is a lot like having a fast trigger finger and deadly aim back in the Wild West. My pals are always willing to laugh along and tip a few back, and most people understand that it’s usually in good fun. But every now and then, some young gunslinger wants to put me to the test. Now, I’m no instigator – but if you point your pistol in my direction, you can bet I’ll return the favor. It seems that out-of-towners are the worst offenders. Here in Cal-Co, we have Lake Winnebago to the west, which limits our proximity to everyone from across the water for about ten months out of the year. During those other two months, the lake is frozen enough to travel across, and the trails open. That’s when our new neighbors come riding into town with posses in tow and points to prove. When west meets east, it occasionally turns ugly, especially when one party lacks the ability to think something without saying it out loud. That’s my specialty. My fieriest incident came a couple years ago. As I remember it, my buddies and I were sitting at the bar with glasses in hand when the doors swung open – much like those old saloon doors you see in western movies, only without the creaky hinges – and a boot-laden crew stomped in. In this situation, the smart move is
always to keep looking straight ahead. But, really, how many smart moves are made from a barstool? I turned around to see a group of strangers. One of them – the lone lady, if I can call her that – marched right over and said she knew me. Well, yeah. I’m the Big Deal. Of course you know me. I told her she didn’t look familiar, and she responded by asking why I look so cocky and arrogant all the time – and telling me I should’ve never turned around when they walked into the bar. Settle down, folks. I wasn’t about to fight a girl. A few drinks later, though, she came back for more and brought her boyfriends along. One of them got in my face real close, so I asked if he wanted a kiss. That may have been something I should’ve kept to myself, but the first shot had officially been fired. So he popped me in the nose while his buddy simultaneously knocked me over the head. If you love Bonanza like I do, you can imagine what happened next. Let’s just say this: Barstools, bodies and beer were flying everywhere. Before long, I was lying in the corner getting the ol’ two-step on my rib cage. I could hear the barkeep yelling from the top of the bar, “Get off of Garret!” I think that was her version of a warning shot. She kicked those west-siders out before any more of my DNA got scattered around the joint. I may not be as strong as Hoss or quick like Little Joe, but I am well liked in my local establishments! When the smoke cleared, we did some reflecting. Broken neon, bent coat hangers, and a busted dartboard littered the bar. All because I couldn’t keep my mouth shut! Or maybe it’s because I always look so cocky? Either way, you’re going to have things like that in a small farming community. It makes me wonder, though... If all these people want to treat me like a cowboy, maybe I should keep the horse? Nah. s
Garret Carnahan is a professional baby maker and an amateur boat builder. He’s also a real sucker for redheads of the four-legged variety. He has been on stage in front of thousands of fans, though they probably weren’t his. Don’t take him too seriously, or you might get offended.

Livestock Living Cowboy Cookie
Brand The
by Madeline Bode
Most days, the man in my life that I call ‘my cowboy’ is just like the one in old western movies who rides into town and steals hearts - or at least some version of it. He’s comforting, supportive, and compassionate. Other days, he’s more like that old trail boss who has been in the saddle for too long: Rough, tough, a little grumpy, and a lot stinky. Maybe you haven’t found the cowboy of your dreams, or maybe yours is more of the trail boss type. Have no fear! There is always a reliable Cowboy Cookie in which you can find comfort. Cowboy Cookies
Ingredients 1 cup shortening 1 tsp salt 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups flour 1 cup white sugar 1 cup oatmeal 2 eggs 1 cup Rice Krispies 1 tsp soda 1 cup chocolate chips 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Cream the shortening, brown sugar and white sugar. • Add eggs. Mix well.
• Add all remaining ingredients. Mix well. • Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
Personally, I think they’re better when slightly under-baked.
• Lay out on newspaper (or similar) to let cool. What’s better than a cowboy? A Cowboy Cookie, of course! s

The key component of BioCycle Showcase is the presence of L-Form Lactobacillus. The unique properties allow it to survive when mixed, letting it reach the lower digestive system unharmed. No other product on the market contains these special Lactobacillus! • Maximizes growth potential • Superior stress management
“
• Strengthens immune system • Improves hair quality
What most impresses me about BioCycle Showcase is the increased appetites of calves. Even at the shows, feed pans are licked clean morning and night. BioCycle Showcase keeps calves looking fresh and helps grow hair. I’ll never feed a show string without it!”
