Since 1980, the Races have raised more than $5 .5 million to support the Brandywine Conservancy’s open space and clean water programs. So many beautiful areas in this region—including Radnor Hunt’s W . Burling Cocks racecourse—have been forever protected from development thanks to the Conservancy’s efforts making ours a wonderful place to live, work and visit.

On behalf of the staff of the Brandywine Conservancy, welcome to the 92nd Radnor Hunt Races!
Since its founding in 1967, the Brandywine Conservancy has protected more than 70,000 acres of open space— including the Radnor Hunt racecourse and surrounding lands—and continues to improve and safeguard water quality, protect outdoor recreation, engage landowners, advance historic preservation, and pursue new perspectives on climate resiliency and sustainability in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware .
The Race for Open Space has been a key fundraiser to support the Brandywine Conservancy’s open space and clean water programs for more than 40 years . Net proceeds from sponsorships; tent and tailgate reservations; and souvenir, program and ad sales from today’s event will support the Conservancy’s land and water protection efforts for the coming year.
The Radnor Hunt Races is the result of countless hours of planning and would not be possible without our staff— who, with help from the Radnor Hunt Race Committee, Boy Scout Troop 78, and dozens of other volunteers, plan this unforgettable event. We thank each of them for their time, attention to detail and passion for Brandywine’s mission and the sport of steeplechase. Willistown Troop 78 Presents the Colors
We’re delighted to welcome representatives from Willistown Boy Scout Troop 78 to present the Colors today. Founded in 1930, Willistown Troop 78 has positively influenced the lives of thousands of young men throughout its dynamic yearly roster of activities that emphasize outdoor skills, leadership training, community service and fun .
The scouts, leaders and families of Willistown Troop 78 have been valued partners of the Radnor Hunt Races for 33 years . They have over 150 volunteers here today . We thank them for their time, effort and enthusiasm!

Orpheus to Sing the National Anthem
Founded in 1872, the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia is the oldest independent men’s choral group and social club of its kind in the United States. Each program year the Club presents three formal concerts exclusively for its Associate Members/subscribers . With the opening of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Club performs in several venues throughout Philadelphia

Michael hails from a long line of horsemen . When not in his gallery/shop, Yoicks!, in Monkton, Maryland, he can be found in the saddle whipping-in to hounds for the Elkridge Harford Hunt Club or in the announcer’s stand at steeplechase meets and polo fields up and down the East Coast.

The Elizabeth R. Moran Stewards’ Tower
The Radnor Hunt Races have showcased the best of steeplechase racing in Chester County for 92 years. Thanks to Elizabeth R. “Betty” Moran, all proceeds from the race meet have benefited the open space programs of the Brandywine Conservancy since 1980. Until her passing in January of 2020, Betty was an integral part of the event and the Brandywine by serving on the Board of Directors of the Museum & Conservancy, Chairing the Race committee, hosting sponsor events at her Brushwood Stable, and providing generous financial support.
Betty, like the landmark race tower seen from Providence Road, is part of the rich history of the Radnor Races The iconic three-story stewards’ tower has been an important part of our event since it was built in the early 1990s. Rising over the course, the tower allows the race officials a bird’seye view to see and call the day’s races . It has become a beloved sight for those who live near or travel by Radnor Hunt .
Last spring, with help of the Conservancy, Radnor Hunt launched a $250,000 campaign to repair and restore the tower to ensure its safety and use for generations to come. By December of 2022, through the generous contributions of Radnor Hunt members, race patrons and committee members, approximately half of the funds had been raised .
In January of this year, the Moran Family offered to close the fundraising gap to honor their mother’s life-long dedication to the Radnor Hunt Races. Thanks to their generosity, and the craftsmanship of B & D Builders, the tower will be safe and secure and now known as the Elizabeth R. Moran Tower—a very fitting tribute to someone so well known for her love of horses and philanthropic support in Chester County .

Pony Races
We are pleased to host Pony Races again this year . Organized as lead line races in 2022 by life-long equestrian and Radnor Hunt Races Committee member Anna Coyne, this year’s Pony Races feature four heats: two lead line and two flat races.
Our pony races are open to juniors who have not reached their 16th birthday as of the first of the current year. Mounts to be a minimum of 5 years old . Riders competing in lead line may not also compete in small or large pony flat races. Ribbons are awarded for win, place, show and best turned out .
Children who ride learn self-discipline, patience and responsibility. They also learn to become stewards of the open space required to support all equestrian sports . Please give them—and their parents—a hearty round of applause!

CHARLES WAYNE “SKIP” ACHUFF
Achuff grew up in Glen Riddle, Pennsylvania and was a teenager when he first worked as an exercise rider. He became a regular jockey on the National Steeplechase Association circuit in the 1970s and 1980s. He rode his first race May 23, 1970, at Fair Hill in Maryland, finishing seventh aboard Tip Tank for Woodcrest Stable. Achuff had many wins while teaming primarily with legendary trainer Morris “Pop” Dixon. His first official win came May 8, 1971, at Radnor in Pennsylvania aboard Waterloo Place—a race meet where Achuff would ultimately take the reins as Race Director.
Achuff rode many races in the 1970s and into the 1980s and put together a five-win season in 1984. The highlight was a flat win aboard future member of Thoroughbred Racing’s Hall of Fame, Flatterer, at Tanglewood in North Carolina. Achuff then retired as a jockey but returned for one more ride in an amateur race finishing fourth at Atlanta in 1986.
After retirement from race riding, Achuff stayed connected and devoted to Steeplechase by serving as an official, a chart caller, and a mentor to young jockeys. In November 2004, he became the Race Director for Radnor Hunt Races. He served in that position until his passing, expanding the participation of horsemen and spectators. He was committed to growing the sport and was always quick to encourage and recognize others who did the same.
Skip Achuff passed away on August 28, 2022. He had many talents but was first and foremost a horseman. The Achuff family has created the Stalwart of Steeplechase award to honor his contributions to the sport of steeplechase racing .

Meet the Team
Christy Wray Greenberg joined Brandywine as Associate Director of Fundraising Events and Sponsorship in October 2022. Since then, she has used her extensive background in sports event planning to improve processes for the event . Prior to joining Brandywine, Christy was a Director for the NYRR, who produce the New York City Marathon. Originally from Delaware, Christy is a graduate of NYU and Colorado College Christy looks forward to experiencing all the fun and pageantry of the Radnor Races this year!
James Slater joined as Race Director in November 2022 and oversees all equestrian-related aspects of the Races, just as Skip Achuff did before him. A steeplechase jockey for over 15 years, he still rides the occasional flat race. Slater has been involved in horse racing in various capacities for over 25 years and brings that experience to the role .
Brooke Pitone has been part of the Radnor Team since 2017, though she has been attending the Races with her family before she started working for Brandywine. Her knowledge of horses and her sunny personality make her an invaluable part of the team and a great resource to our Race patrons . In addition to her work at Brandywine, Brooke also coaches high school lacrosse and field hockey at Unionville High School. We’re lucky to have Brooke in our corner!

Theme:
A Hop, SKIP & a Jump!
The Picnic Patron area is always a favorite of tailgaters who enjoy the creative competition of themed tailgates and who like to be near the action at the finish line.
This year’s picnic theme—A Hop, SKIP & a Jump!—was chosen to honor former Race Director Skip Achuff’s memory and places him right where he would want to be at Radnor… in the middle of it all! Individual and group tailgates are awarded prizes for best food, interpretation of the theme, and costumes .
A horseman his entire life, Skip was a jockey, race caller, and all-around true gentleman He served as the Radnor Hunt Race’s director for nearly two decades and was a fixture in the steeplechase world. In addition to his equine pursuits, following his father’s retirement, Achuff operated The Brass Ladle bistro in Concordville, PA, and a mail order cake-mix business, Brass Ladle Products .
