Jacket Aliph by Gatsby Shoes and Shirt from Tommy Hilfiger In a recent chat with India’s spin-spearhead, Ravichandran Ashwin, we found out many exciting things about him, starting from how he enjoyed playing racquet sports to taking up entrepreneurship in the near future. It was such a delight to see him so motivated and persevered but at the same time enjoying every minute of his journey. That man never seems to stop and look back but, just wants to keep moving forward. It is such a pride and honour for India or let us say Chennai, to have produced this triumphant cricketer. Ashwin is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off break, he plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and the Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL after Chennai Super Kings ban. Started off as a successful opening batsman at junior-level cricket, Ashwin dropped down the order and turned into an off-break bowler. He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in December 2006 and captained the team that following season. But it was not until the 2010 Indian Premier League in which he played for the Chennai Super Kings, that he came into the limelight with his efficient bowling. He was also part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Later that year, he made his Test debut against West Indies and became the seventh Indian to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. Ashwin is the only bowler in recent times, apart from Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis to bowl the carrom ball.

1.Ravichandran Ashwin is the fastest in the history of cricket to have taken 300 wickets. Do you consider this as your biggest achievement? In cricket or in any field, there is no limit for achievement. The growing never stops. I consider this as a stepping stone to reach greater heights.
2.Who is your inspiration? I am my own competition, so I don’t look for any inspiration outside. I just try to be a better version of myself. I am quite a taskmaster myself. It works that way in my family. The benchmark is set quite high. Having said that, my wife is the only one who brings the balance. But, I grew up watching people like Sachin Tendulkar play and it was great that I got to play with him. To answer your question, I don’t look for inspiration beyond myself.
3.If not cricket what would you have done? Not too sure. But I definitely would’ve tried and been the best in whatever I would’ve been in. As I mentioned earlier, the benchmark is set quite high. But, I think I have a good chance in entrepreneurship. I am really keen on entrepreneurship. I love creating job opportunities for young people. I think I would motivate my employees to a great extent.

4.So you always saw yourself as a cricketer? Not exactly. But cricket happened at the right time, probably a little delayed but breaks happened pretty quickly. I didn’t really think that I would play for India when I was 17 or 18. I thought I had a decent chance but I didn’t overload myself with expectations. I played cricket and finished engineering. The best part is Chennai has a decent cricket structure. You kind of know that you can make a living out of cricket and settle down in life but I didn’t know I would have done that. I was quite happy when it happened but neer thought of it as an automatic choice for me. From then on, I never settled.
5.What are your other interests? I am a sports buff. In fact, I started playing tennis first and then cricket happened accidentally. I had to fill in for a school match in PSBB. I play basketball as well, basically found ways that kept me apart from studies (*chuckles*). I am pretty good at racquet sports; it is something that came naturally to me. I am also a fan of movies, books and television series. It is just to be on toes.
6.Where do you see yourself ten years from now? No goals no ambitions. I’d love to take life as it comes because I have handled a lot of pressure the last couple of years. So now I would like to handle things as it comes. When I started playing I enjoyed the game but as time passed its became like work. So I want get away from the monotony and try and make sure I enjoy the rest of the career that I have in front of me.
7.What do you love the most about Chennai? Home! Chennai is everything. No holiday is required when I am back home. The one thing I love about Chennai is that I like how conventional it is when it comes to thinking. I feel it is far more grounded and very realistic. It gives you the space needed.

The atmosphere in a hospital is not one that’s quite welcoming I would say. But that is definitely a beacon of hope for those who have to deal with issues that are most important.

We can talk about the millions of health care seekers around the world who walk in or stay at the hospitals all over. Each person has a story that is harder to hear than the other. Age irrespective, they all will surely bring a tear to our eyes. When we open the papers every morning, try to understand what is happening in our city, state and country, we come across a sad story about the loss of an unknown human life, we pause for at least a second, don’t we? That compassion is what still makes us run in this crazy race. When we as normal fellow beings can spare and show care amidst our routine lives, the amount of patience and compassion needed for those employed in the health care industry is tremendous. As much as a soft heart that is required of them to deal with patients in pain and suffering, so much should they also have the strength to help those patients get through it all with ease.

Healthcare is a unique field when compared to all other professions existing. While making money is the primary target of any job or business, healthcare deals with gifting a cure in return. We may have read or heard friends say tall tales about how unfair and inhuman those in power have been. I admit there is no denying to those hard facts. But let us not jump to conclusions and categorise the entire fraternity under that single label. Technology has advanced tremendously, in the medical field especially. So many un-diagnosable health conditions have been diagnosed and cured found. Uncountable breakthroughs have been made and targets achieved by so many research scientists all over the world with the single thought in mind of trying to do their part in saving mankind. One must realise that this level of research and development requires a lot of financial aid for its support, right from the research process up until its successful implementation in hospitals all over the world. And so, like any other business, the money that was put in must be reeled out by way of charges. I am not trying to rationalise the exorbitant charges levied by the hospitals. But trying to make one understand that nothing comes free of cost.
Gone are the days of free medication, excessive generosity, etc. Today has come to a stand of man for man, word for word; and every man fending for himself. We can blame this situation on the changing ways of the world, but as hard as it may seem, this is reality. This is in fact like how a dosa is charged anywhere between INR 25.00 to INR 250.00, for example. The place we receive the service matters and becomes the reason for the change in rate for the service. Either way, our stomach gets filled. In this kind of an environment, that deals with pressures such as these, both internal and external, this month’s article is to talk about those who are the backbones of the undisturbed functioning of this industry. When we start from the bottom of the ladder, these men and women take first place. More popularly known as AAYAMAAS and ANNAS, their job is the most unwilling of all. But they do it with a big heart and a beautiful smile. I have seen them do their work, personally; thanks to my sick grannies. And never have they once put up a sad face nor shown any disrespect towards the patient. They clean out the patients’ secretions however bad it may be. Whilst many family members themselves find it disgusting to do that kind of help to their kin, these men and women really surprise me. Up on to the other sect of people who work at the morgues; they have always given me the shivers. Its not about the countless dead bodies they have to deal with, day in and day out but the thought of sealing the fact that those were actual living people until they landed up at their doorsteps, and watch them being torn apart for whatsoever medical reasons; now that requires immense courage and sanity of the mind to be able to do that job every single day. I had always wondered as to what would be going on inside their heads every time they have to deal with a corpse! The kind of dedication they show, when they patiently listen to the wailing cries of the families, console them and make sure their beloved ones come out in a decent shape from the post mortems, these folks handle it with so much ease that brings a little bit of comfort to those affected.

Having grown up with the dreams of becoming a doctor someday but settled for the opportunity of a NURSE, mostly women [in case of India] graduate out of Nursing Colleges by the thousands. A nurse is the next best thing any patient can find to a doctor. Amidst all the hundreds of patients that the doctor has to attend to, he/she might not have the time and patience to stay there and comfort each and every patient at length. Its during times such as these that the nurses come in playing the role of a doctor; trying to explain the un-understandable, complicated medical situation of the patient in the politest way, ensuring it does not scare them even more. They know to follow the instructions of the doctor, the medicines to be dispensed, the method of prescription and personal care to top it off. Life had placed me in many a dull and depressing moments where I have had to deal with situations of near and dear ones quite often at the hospitals. I have personally spent months that stretched into years, all the while observing the way these nurses behave with the in-patients. When these unfortunate inmates have a bagful to deal with already, missing their homes, dealing with their illness and more, the nurses show so much love and care, ensuring the patients gain confidence on the treatment being given to them and hope in a quick return home. That is something that definitely deserves a salute. Sitting in front of a system, monitoring the beeps of the machines, checking the patients’ condition and conveying the same to the concerned doctors, the LAB TECHS sure should know to receive news both good and bad when they see one. In fact, they are the first, of all the people who will get to know if the patient is in the survival basket or not. Irrespective of the tests’ outcome, they just have to type it all out the same way and send it across to the doctors’ office. They have no clue as to who each patient is, what they do for a living, or anything of that sorts. They treat every sample that comes in similarly and process the same to obtain the results. They show zero emotion simply because it is not going to affect the outcome or those concerned in anyway. And in return, neither the patients nor those related show any concern or interest towards these people who let them know what their actual health condition is. So, here goes another section of the unknown. One wrong diagnosis could alter the life of the patient who might or might not be critically ill. That’s how important the lab tech’s job is, for its their report that the doctor relies on to decide the present state of the patient and based on which he/she will target the method of treatment to be commenced.

Whilst I spoke about all these people working inside the walls of a hospital, I almost forgot to discuss the AMBULANCE DRIVERS and PARAMEDICS who have the toughest job in the city, especially in a metropolitan one. Once a person goes through an emergency and calls for an ambulance, the anxiety that the entire family goes through is unexplainable. Starting from receiving the panic call, reaching the place of pick up on time, transporting the injured/affected safely through the crazy city traffic, ensuring the patient stays stable until their arrival at the hospital, the stress level that these ambulance drivers and paramedics go through is something else. They are looked up to like Gods, as the lives of their loved ones now rests solely with them for the next ‘X’ number of minutes. One wrong move could possibly result in tragedy. Keeping all this in mind, these men and women treat every single call as equal as the other and balance life on a needle point until its delivered to their superiors at the hospital for intensive care and treatment. Little do we realise this and come back to thank these people for bringing the affected, on time and having saved their life. Many such people go unnoticed in various fields, all over the world. I have had the opportunity to discuss a few the past few months, and found a great deal of satisfaction in bringing to light the forgotten few. I will continue to do so and help people remember what they have missed along their busy lifestyles. So together let us keep searching for the forgotten few.

Considering all the impediments that women face in general, when it comes to sports, it is much more than that. One of the struggles that Muslim women face is wearing a burkha or hijab while having to play sports. For years they have struggled in upholding their principles of modesty at the same time play their favourite sport. While competing in the Olympics, 2016 held in Rio de Janeiro, Ibtihaj Muhammad, sabre fencer, wore children’s hijab for it to fit better, often she would sweat through the material and it would obstruct her from hearing better.

Keeping all this in mind, Nike has introduced the ‘Performance Hijab’ for female Muslim players. It is designed in such a way that it tackles all performance related problem that women face in terms of weight, breathability, and the shift of the fabric during performances. The hijab is made of lightweight optimal breathability. It is made of fluff threads to purge rubbing and irritation. Also, the hijab is super-stretchy for a personalized fit and adapts aptly to the wearer. The pull-n design and the long back keeps the hijab in place. In order to make this the best, the hijab was planned in collaboration with many Muslim athletes including weightlifter Amna Al Hadad. The Muslim women that were first to try these on were, figure-skater Zahra Lari and Egyptian runner and mountaineer Manai Rostom. “The Nike Pro Hijab has been a year in the making, but its impetus can be traced much further back to Nike’s founding mission, to serve athletes, with the signature addendum: If you have a body, you’re an athlete”, Nike established. This was unveiled two days before International Women’s Day 2017. As we all know, Nike’s “Just Do It” has made them do so much. Sports as an industry has come a long way especially for women, it is so much better now. Not only has Nike come up with such ideas, many other brands are working towards the betterment of Sports worldwide. Last International Women’s Day (2016), Hummel, a Danish sportswear company, introduced new kits for Afghanistan women’s soccer team. Their kit was the first to include a hijab as a part of it. Their motto is ”Change the World through Sports”. Nike is not the first brand to introduce modest sportswear, smaller companies like Capsters which was started in 2001 have been selling sports hijabs all over the world. On the other hand, Muslim women have been creating and designing their own hijabs from the money raised in fundraising and crowd sourcing. Ruqsana Begum, a British Muay Thai fighter, to encourage more women to participate in sports, she started her own line of hijab. ,

When asked a Muslim district level athlete and volleyball player, Samah, how useful will this be for her she said, “Hijab should basically cover the entire body but the hijab that just covers your head is just a modernized version that conservative Muslims don’t follow. I am from a conservative family and my parents let me play until school without hijab because I studied in an all girls’ school. But once I entered college, my parents refused to send me without a hijab. The performance hijab by Nike is a good initiative but it wouldn’t benefit conservative Muslims like us because we cover our body from head to toe. At the end of the day, it depends on the sports you play, like volleyball and basketball can be played with a hijab whereas it is difficult to run or jump with the same.”

Deepthi Bopaiah, executive director of GoSports Foundation, when asked if religion should be brought into sports, she said, “I think it is an amazing initiative. It’s just an added advantage for the Muslim women, if they can perform better without any hindrances and also keeping their religion in mind, why not give them a chance? Moreover, sports is the only field where religion is not brought into. We only play as a country. Only in India there is so much diversity but this Performance Hijab concentrates on all parts of the world especially Muslim countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan. If women are restricted due to hijab, Nike is just providing a platform for such. So I personally think that this is just a development in the industry and this will not create any division.”

Nike is said to bring this into the market in the beginning months of 2018. It is priced at 35 US dollars (Rs. 2235) approximately. It is available in three different colours such as black, vast grey and obsidian. It is also available in different sizes from extra small to large. The advancements in sports especially for Muslim women have always made a mark. A great example would be Burkhini (burkha + bikini) a sportswear that covers your body from head to toe. A brand that is favourite for many has come up with such an initiative it will definitely take a toll in the market.

MARKUS ZUSAK YOHESWARI DEVARAJ
Markus Zusak, an Australian writer was in the city to attend The Hindu’s Lit for Life 2017. This was his first visit to the country. He is famous for The Book Thief and The Messenger. He has won the Margaret Edwards award for his contribution to literature. With 5 books under his name and a sixth one under progress, Zusak talks to Yoheswari Devaraj and M.Meghna on his next book, plagiarism and chicken biriyani. Edited excerpts follow:
What were the genres you wanted to write about initially? I just copied my favourite books really. In some ways, my books are a copy of my favourite books. But that’s how you learn. Genres of kids growing up is what I wanted to explore I guess. About the real life. That’s how I started, they weren’t really good. And thank god! They weren’t published. But they were good because I believed in what I wrote. I finished my first book when I was 18 and it was rejected by 5 publishers. But that’s how you start.
Have you ever had the fear of plagiarism? Less and less. I would worry about it more when I was growing up because the idea of originality is drilled into you. When I was writing my 4th book, which got rejected by the publishers by the way, it was set at a football field and it was quite similar to the book, Shoeless Joe which was set in a baseball field instead. So I stopped writing. When it is the same plotline, you worry. The book am writing now has the protagonist dig up a dead snake, typewriter and a dog. That too is similar to another book. But am not worried, because only that is similar. In the past maybe I would’ve panicked. But now after 5 books under my name, the confidence has grown to believe in my writings. Now you could say I copied it but I know it’s not true. So you can think what you like.
When did you believe you could move masses through words? Ah! I never did believe actually. You just have a mission to do what you can do and to write what you can write. And if you are extremely lucky, someone will read it.

How do you deal with hate comments? Many did not like The Book Thief (TBT). They wanted to bag it because they could accept that the book was too ambitious and had a lot of ideas. It was upsetting and it could affect your writing for a month or two. But then you just have to believe in your work and they can all just go to hell. I believe that if you get hit, you can hit back harder. That you have to stand up for yourself and not lie saying,” you don’t care.” Because I do and that is what drives me to do better.
Are you afraid your next book will not measure TBT? Is that why there is a decade long gap? The book am writing now is what I always wanted to write about. TBT really surprised me. I still want to have a career beyond TBT. I feel like I have to prove myself beyond TBT. I’d like to write at least a dozen books before my death and so far, I only have 5. I have people come to me and say “You don’t have to write a better book than TBT, you just have to write a different book.” But no, I have never had that attitude. I always want to do better. These 10 years are because I have got so invested in the book, that it’s just has to be what it is, irrespective of what others say.
Do you aspire to write better than other writers? TBT may not be the best book ever written but its not the worst book ever written. It is the only book like it. When I was young, after a race I had complained to my dad saying that I had thought I won. When I had actually got the sixth place. My dad had said “You made a big mistake, I thought you won too but you did not win by enough. You have to win by so much that no one can take it off you.” And that has stayed with me in writing too. It’s not that I want to write better than others. I want to write so much like myself, that no one else can write like.
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? Since I was 16. I got lucky at 23 and my first book was published. But it’s easy to get published when you are young, in some ways. 5 books you would steal?
No. By the time the book comes out, you have read it so many times you become sick of it. At various occasions I am asked to read a few pages but I would never read the book as a whole. I would read the start of it, just to remind myself what it was that kept me writing during that period but only in that technical sense and it’s always just a short passage.
The Idiot, Catch You In The Rye, A Suitable Boy. But maybe not that since it would be too big and difficult to carry. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? That’s one of my favourites and The Commitments.
If there is one thing you could change in the movie, what would it be?
The people. They are so warm and generous. The intelligence too. Some of the questions asked were a delight to be answered. Did you eat the chicken biriyani? No. Am a vegetarian. So that rules it out.
I can’t really comment on that. If I have to, then it would probably be the ending. In the book, the protagonist comes around and finds everyone dead but in the movie, one of them is alive. And that is so Hollywood. All I could think was “They couldn’t resist. They had to do it.” That upset and hurt me a lot.
How did you support yourself financially before you got published? I had 3 jobs. I was a substitute teacher for a high school, a cleaner at a doctor’s surgery and tutored children after school in English.
Are you a kindle or a paperback person? Paperback. But its only cause I find it difficult to download.

Any memorabilia you are taking back from the city? Someone here gave me a card. In TBT the protagonist played cards. And so this girl wrote a personal note on one side of the card. It was the ace of spades, I guess. It was sweet gesture.
Message to aspiring writers? My advice to the young writers would be that, just know that there is a long life ahead of you. There will be times when you just want to give up and times when you just want to curl up on your couch feeling guilty on not writing, but you will (write). Maybe the next day or the next year. The hardest thing in writing is showing up to the desk to do the work. Don’t be afraid to fail and to not do good work. The work will get better as you keep doing it. It is always in the attempt.

Someone wise once said, “The world by day is like European music; a flowing concourse of vast harmony, composed of concord and discord and many disconnected fragments. And the night world is our Indian music; one pure, deep and tender raga.” In his book, Another Garland (Biographical Dictionary of Carnatic Composers & Musicians), N. Rajagopalan said “Classical Carnatic music is but the continuance of ancient Indian music as it was prior to the advent of Persian influence and the attendant evolution of the Hindustani style. The Tamil areas in the South had from pre-historic times a well-developed, scientific, distinct style known as Pann. The Indian (later called the ‘Carnatic’ from the days of the work Manasollasa) and the Tamil Pann had coalesced invisibly during the middle ages and presently the South has the Carnatic music and the North has the Hindustani music - of course, both raga -based with common and distinct features.”

The influence of Indian classical music on every other form of music is pervasive and longstanding. Its beauty, grace, and unique melodic phrasing has inspired musicians for decades, and its exciting rhythmic language has given percussionists, instrumentalists, and even vocalists new resources upon which they have drawn. Its philosophical underpinnings have allowed many musicians to deepen the spiritual aspect of their music. For many global musicians the influences have been personal, at times abstract; informing their musical choices, but not always in a manner overtly apparent to the listener. For a few however, the influence is so strong, it is immediately apparent at every level of their music.
Today, an evolving group of new-age music composers of the millennial generation are trying to challenge the traditional boundaries of what consitutes contemporary classical music, in an effort to reignite the underlying essence of this enchanting form. One such global musician is Mahesh Raghvan, a young internet-popular Carnatic Music Fusion Composer & Digital Artist, whose musical works straddle the line between classical and indie with an alluring, innovative rhythm and sound, giving it new life and meaning.
Raghvan recollects how he was inclined to music right from his childhood with support and encouragement from his family. He was brought up taking Carnatic vocal lessons, keyboard classes, Trinity College exams and music performances. His other key passion, besides music, became technology, where he enjoyed experimenting with computers, software, hardware etc. Today, Raghvan magically combines his academic knowledge in Audio Engineering and Digital Composition & Performance with his passion for the visual arts, digital media, sound design and technology to create music with unconventional, inventive and radically different techniques. He cites Mandarin Srinivas and Niladri Kumar among his key music influences and takes an experimental multi-instrumental approach to his music, combining electronica with more classical instruments. His all acoustic, all instrumental pieces tell more story than any poet-cum-musical artist ever could in rambling verbal form.

Raghvan is a true artist fit to reintroduce the listener to the area of acoustic music as something to be appreciated and savored. A typical musical creation for him starts with an idea say thillana and then moves towards methodically breaking down the structure of the entire piece to identify the specific elements of western music to be introduced into the composition. His main intent in every composition is to strategically retain the core element of the classical music to emanate a strong energy that exhibits both rhythm and quiet power, as well as the touch of mysticism. He currently runs a popular YouTube project called FLAIR – Carnatic Music 2.0 where he creates modern electronic versions of popular Carnatic music pieces and Indian style versions of Western pop songs. “The objective of this project is to provide a fresh new take on Carnatic music by mixing it with elements of Electronic Dance Music,” says Raghvan. He uses a

lot of technology to produce his music. The iPad app he usually plays is called GeoShred, which simulates the sound of the electronic guitar and other stringed instruments. Raghvan is also the Creative Director of Indian Raga, an arts education startup founded at MIT that aims to become the largest community of artists and mentors in the world who produce authentic, yet ground breaking new works in the performing arts. As part of the IndianRaga Fellowship, one of the world’s most prestigious network of performing artists producing the best collaborations and music videos, Raghvan has collaboratively composed over 15 new tracks that would be released later this year. He also works with major music technology companies such as Wizdom Music, CME Pro, Swar Systems, SWAM and ROLI to make Indian Classical Music playable on their hardware/ software.

The word “Yoga” has its origins in Sanskrit and its roots traced back to India, but if you were to search for the word on google images, this is what you would find. White, American women with their hands folded in the classic Vanakkam/Namaste pose and facing the sunset atop a mountain or near a beach. Even after scrolling through more than 10 pages of google images, the results look the same. White, incredibly toned and fit women practicing various postures in picturesque locations.
Not only is it shocking to see something Indian being represented by foreign entities, it is interesting to note that western adaptations of yoga sometimes override the traditional practice. The websites of most yoga studios in the country as well as Chennai is also portrayed by foreign women practicing yoga. A lot of times Indians have failed to understand the value of their own practices unless it is validated by the west. The “Thoppukaranam” (Holding your right ear with your left hand and left ear with your right hand and performing sit-ups) that Indians have been doing in front of a Lord Ganesha statue since time immemorial has been called “Super Brain Yoga” by researchers in the west and is said to stimulate various parts of the brain. There are various emerging trends to the age old yoga that is becoming popular all

over the world. One such twist to this ancient Indian practice is a new trend called “Beer Yoga” that originated in Germany and has spread to various parts of Asia, Australia, US and Europe. “Philosophies of yoga paired with the pleasure of drinking beer to help a person reach their highest level of consciousness”- This is what Jhula, the founder of Beer Yoga promises. While this brings attention to the practice of yoga as a whole, it takes away the essence of it. Yoga has always been about the connection between the body and the mind without any other external influences and Beer Yoga seems to go against this basic principle itself. Attaining discipline, balance and

concentration along with physical fitness and flexibility- this is what yoga is about. Drinking beer neither helps with discipline nor balance (From what researchers say, it is extremely difficult to balance while intoxicated) and the beer belly that comes with it isn’t really the exact definition of fitness! “These new trends are all counter -productive to what one usually seeks to achieve through yoga,” says Sruthakeerthi Mohan Ram, the founder of Teal Zeal- A yoga centre for Women in Chennai. “Moreover Yoga is to be done on an empty stomach. It’s terrible to fool people into thinking that such trends will work wonders for your health. It definitely doesn’t,” she adds.

After this Beer Yoga trend went viral on social media, Stand-up comedian Sanjay Manaktala made a satirical video, “Biryani yoga” that spoofs the concept of beer yoga. “I think that beer yoga, pizza yoga, gun yoga etc... is all a bit too silly. However I also was somebody who kept making fun of yoga until I got into it a year ago and now I can see how it’s helpful in health and fitness and peace of mind. So while I don’t believe in all these gimmick yogas (the point of sarcasm in my video) I think that anything that gets people talking is good for the industry as whole. Hopefully if we realize beer yoga is stupid we will probably realize too much beer is also bad!” he quips.

While we are talking about a new twist on our age old Yoga, “ The Yoga Journal” claims that “No one invented yoga, no one can claim ownership (including cultural ownership) and no one can determine what yoga should be.” Yoga’s Indian roots have been proven and with the Modi government’s Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), of the Ministry of Science and Technology that challenges several claims made by global MNC’s and individuals for patenting different branches of yoga; it cannot get clearer than this. The magazine in another article says that the word “OM” also means “Orgasmic Meditation”- yet another yoga trend that defeats the true

purpose and defies its basic principles. On similar lines is something called Aerial yoga, where people hang from ropes and practice various asanas. It is supposed to give them a feeling of flying and defying gravity. What irks a person who practices regular yoga is when people add any word before “yoga” and try making it an actuality. How is it physically possible to attain a “deep connection between the mind and the body” while you are hanging from a rope? When people fail to ask questions, it eventually amounts to accepting the trend. “It is honestly a struggle to make the good old yoga attractive because to this date, its considered to be a boring work out, These trends trivialise yoga

to suit the consumerist tendencies and trends.” explains Sruthakeerthi. Nowadays, there has been a growth in the number of yoga studios and more number of youngsters take to this as their primary fitness routine. With the Modi Government’s push to make yoga mandatory in schools, or to have a recognized International Yoga Day or even an official body to keep unlawful patents in check, there seems to be an overall positive impact in the country with more people practicing yoga despite such trends and commercialisation of culture.

While that might not always be possible budget wise. But using organic food is healthier. As, they contain the most pesticide residues.

Colourful ranjolis, early morning recitals, scented flower garlands and extravagant art festivals are just the ancillary eye-candies of the month MARGAZHI. Margazhi is the ninth month of the Hindu calendar which falls roughly between the 15th of December and January months in the Gregorian calendar. It is considered the most auspicious month by the Tamilians and is regarded as sacred and prosperous. It is believed that Lord Krishna himself professed that he shall pervade everywhere, in all forms in the month of Margazhi in the Bhagavat Gita. His words “Maathangalil Naan Margazhi” confirms the divinity of this month. The month Marghazhi derives its name from the star Mrigasirsha occurring on or immediately after the month’s full moon. It is also known as Dhanur month as the sun transits through ‘Dhanur rasi’ (Sagittarius).

The Aarudhra Dharshan which celebrates the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva and the star Aarudhra coincidentally falls in this very month. This happens to be the longest night of the year and falls on a full moon phase. The opening of the ‘Gates to the Lord’s Inner Sanctum’ or ‘Vaikundam’ is also observed in the month of Margazhi. Both ‘Thiruppavai’ and ‘Thiruvempavai’ are chanted in this month. All temples across India have special pre-dawn worship during this month. Notably, the religious pilgrimage season to Sabarimala Ayyapa Temple comes to an end in Margazhi. Celebrations like weddings and engagements are usually not held during this month. The whole of Margazhi is dedicated to the worship and elevation of Gods. The main objective of this month is to get together and offer group prayers in a belief to appeal to the Almighty. This is the major reason for all the Religious Satsangs and Discourses both early in the morning and at evenings. Apart from these satsangs, a lot of importance is given to Carnatic music and Classical dance. The various mythological stories are narrated through the songs and dances in a way to experience divinity.

The weather and the harvest during this month is extremely prosperous and most of the festivals and social events are based around this cold weather. It is not easy to get up early in the cold months and our culture has embedded the practice of getting up early to attend these discourses or to draw the rangoli in an attempt to shake off the lethargy and become energetic and healthy. The easiest way to teach people effectiveness was through the religious route or though the “Bhakti Marga”. It is surprising as to how our ancestors found ways to keep man active in all social interactions. Scientifically, Cold weather is the most “creative” weather filled with efficiency and stamina after getting over the initial laziness. Pavai Nonbu, also known as Margazhi Nonbu, is observed in Tamilnadu during this month. The history of pavai nonbu is more than 2000 years old and is mentioned in the early Tamil scriptures. The general belief is that pavai nonbu was observed for Katyayani [a form of Durga]. It is said that Gopis first observed it to attain Lord Krishna as their husband. Even today, girls and women observing this sacred fast take a bath early in the morning, light oil lamps in front of their houses and draw big, colourful rangolis. The hymns of both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are recited for the eternal prosperity of the universe and to be devoid of any famine or natural disaster. The misty month of Margazhi is not only known for its divinity but also for the aroma of the array of dishes that embellish the festivals. The devout bhajans, and temple bells are just tools to make people get over their self-centeredness and think about the wellness of the humankind.

Travel is one of the things I got to know more about from my December trip to Bangalore. There’s more to it than coming across new people, food and lifestyle in another place. At a very soft level, it makes you question yourself and ponder over certain things. And between all the nuances of being away from home, there are some simply beautiful moments in which you are introduced to a new side of things. The winter of 2017 had something in store for me that I very much needed; aside from long conversations and a chilly December. On my way back to Chennai now, from the train I notice beams of sunlight falling on coconut trees and grass as the fog lifts, listening to the rattles from below. And remember yesterday’s breakfast of huggi gojju.

The sourness in it was on the higher side impeccably to my liking. And then remember all the yummy food I’ve had over the past month. It started with majjige kodbale in Maiyas right on the first day of arrival. And then came grand-aunt’s tomato soup, bisi bele bath, coriander chutney, kodbale and mysore pak among other items throughout the rest of the month. I would say most of Bangalore is passionate about its food; places like Vidyarthi Bhavan, Brahmin’s café or even a street-corner food outlet do it with utmost passion and sincerity. Most people have mainly the traffic and weather to talk about. Having heard nothing else much about the city I was in for a pleasant surprise when I had earlier come in August. We were walking on the footpath in Malleshwaram, and suddenly I saw myself surrounded by flowers and flower sellers, with the stalls stacked with malas and heaps meticulously arranged with flowers of all colours. I’d never thought these shops in Mylapore (Chennai) would have an identical twin.

So in reality the city is not as bad as it is portrayed. Especially about having the time and space for oneself. I very much feel otherwise. The balcony in my cousin’s place overlooks a hilly residential area, with a lot of space in between and strong, cold winds blowing. In all my juggling and tight schedule this place was my refuge. Another place I found extremely peaceful was the terrace of another cousin’s house. It was the penultimate evening. After climbing three flights of stairs, when I reached the top in the dusky twilight with a drum I’d picked up from some room, all it took was one breath to take my mind off some haunting thoughts. I sat there playing the instrument for almost two hours with no winter clothing for cover. And maybe the cold winds that I have so much of an aversion towards are not as harmful as I think. The coldest December of my life felt quite warm that evening. I went again early next morning. Since I had time at hand I decided to meditate. And yet again, the longest meditation felt the lightest. While there was so much chaos inside me, it felt as if everything was in order, within and without. Maybe I haven’t looked close enough until now. Maybe things are not how one hears them to be and there’s a deeper truth to them. Maybe, at the centre of all chaos lies the mind that has the power to perceive it as in order. As I eat the chocolate cake made by my aunt, I try to make sense of the chaos in my life with the things the past month has taught me.

Human life comprises of three components namely personal life, family life and social life. Thiruvalluvar has defined these three components in three cantos or parts. The canto on Wealth categorically enumerates various aspects on social life. Thiruvalluvar describes his crystal-clear political philosophy in the canto on Wealth. Thirukkural, the rarest of rare ancient literature possesses enormous wealth in it. It shatters the boundaries of race, language, religion, etc and suits all ages.
