BREW BREW LIFESTYLE LIFESTYLEAUGUST JULY 2017 2017
Millennial dComing u t i ofe sage Akila Sridhar
I thought the right time to talk about this would be on my birthday (Women’s Day) so here it goesI’ve always wanted to be a woman of content. To start off I might’ve always been one but I’ve never really seen myself to be qualified enough for that. Someone once told me that in your 20s, the bars are always set too ambitiously high and no feedback would ever be a good enough feedback.
6 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
I’ve always wanted to make life altering changes and come out head strong. Have the strength to walk away from situations harmful for confidence and people who’re toxic, but never really listened to my own advice. I’ve always wanted to help out in the society, sort of like giving back for all the privilege taken for granted over the years and I’ve spoken the big words but never really implemented it myself. Having been brought up in the household of tough love believing that unless the going gets tough, you aren’t really going, I’ve never found time outside of my normal lifestyle
to contribute and introspect my position. I’ve never felt like I had it all or enough to start giving. I always felt like I could start tomorrow but that never came closer. Those of you who know me well, have also known me to show them pictures of “people” I’d like to be similar to and I often used to say “I wish I had it as easy as them” completely discounting their struggles and hardships they’ve had to face. I’ve never really thought about the sacrifices they’ve had to make and changes they’ve made to endure to make even the slightest change in the society or even themselves.
I agree, I was wrong all along; It’s never too less to share and never too small to give. In building others is where one can see the real self growth. So now I’ve decided enough is enough. It’s high time I start walking the talk about the agency I believe in. I need to start putting in hours for the community, for myself outside of work as relaxation for the mind, as a step to proving to myself that there is so much to my 20’s than just partying and academics. -Woman of the 20’s!
7 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
March on
MI’ LADIES! MARCH ON!
Roshan Siddharth
Of women, history, march and marching For the many that studied in schools in India, a story in their English prose from standard 6 or 8 would be an iconic remembrance. It was the story of defiance, grit and revolution. And it sprung from the very simple action, of one lady refusing to give into bigotry, racism and dictatorial authority, by sitting down. Yes. She sat down and refused to get up, even while being hurled abuses, curses and threats. Her name was Rosa Parks. And Rosa Parks sat still, created a revolution for her, women and mankind. 8 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
Wind back in time, years before Rosa, you have Susan B Anthony. This stalwart of a woman took matters into her own hands and defied every single shackle thrust upon her by men and society. And pioneers of many a movement, like the Temperance movement, her newspaper “The Revolution and the National Suffragette Movement.” All of which have created ripples that last even today and have helped women gain a better footing in society, equal rights on matters that involve them as a part of society and a valour to voice themselves as equals. If you are wondering why this piece of writing talks of Rosa Parks and Susan B Anthony, its because this month is Women’s History Month. It is an opportunity to celebrate the women that broke “the glass ceiling” despite the hurdles that we as a society, a patriarchal one at that, kept in their way.
And the reality was, at all times, all the women are always asking society to do is treat them as equals, and not tie them down to their bodies, body parts and natural body functions. As a regular guy, it has never made sense to why women were put through all that and I apologize for that. Women’s History month has its origins tied to small socialist movements in the early 1900s.These movements had intense participation from women and their activism was loud and volatile. The inspiration for these movements came from the Suffragette movements in the USA, such as the ones led by Susan B Anthony. In 1909, an activist named Theresa Malkiel suggested a National Women’s Day to be observed to the Socialist Party of America. The word about the observance spread to great acclaim. This practice was great news to women and grassroots women’s
movements around the world. About a year late, the women’s wing of global socialist parties called to organize the second edition of the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. There, German activists Clara Zetkin and Kate Duncker along with others proposed for an observance like in the states, but did not conclude with a date. Following that in 1911, on March 19 the first International Women’s Day was observed across Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Switzerland, with over a million people participating. In the years that followed, especially in 1914, Germany and England observed IWD on March 8th, possibly owing to its falling on a Sunday. And it continued to be celebrated in scattered dates, until something threw the world upside down and women, true to their spirit were at the fore front of it.

In 1917, on March 8th (which was celebrated as Working Women’s Day) women working in textile factories in St. Petersburg, in the erstwhile Russian Kingdom ‘marched’ out of their factories for “Bread and Peace” i.e. the restoration of economic conditions, food shortage, the abdication of the Czar, and to cease World War 1. Over 9000 workers, majorly women ‘marched’ out onto the streets in protest, which became the February revolution, leading up to the October revolution and the eventual formation of the USSR. Leon Trotsky, a revolutionary leader wrote in awe stating “The 8th of March was International Woman’s Day and meetings and actions were foreseen. But we did not imagine that this ‘Women’s Day’ would inaugurate the revolution. Revolutionary actions were foreseen but without date. But in the morning, despite the orders to the contrary, textile workers left their work in several factories and sent delegates to ask for support of the strike… which led to mass strike... all went out into the streets.” Eventually this date was adopted internationally with the UN accepting it in 1975, International Women’s year. In 1980, Jimmy Carter ordered the celebration of Women’s Week inspired by a weeklong celebration in school in Sonoma in 1978. The following year a resolution was passed calling for Women’s Week celebration nationally. Six years later, with the work of the National Women’s History project, the resolution to extend the celebrations came into being. And slowly with the work of international organizations commemorating this day and the month of March for Women’s history.
10 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
The beauty of it lies in its roots. Although lost and distorted, with many a claim about a factory burning in the United States, being liked to the day, the fact that one of the greatest revolutions on the face of this world, led on the frontlines by women, on this day and month makes it fruitious. And this year’s theme for the month amplifies it. ‘The Valiant Women of the Vote’ is the theme for this year. It commemorates 100 years of the ratification of the 19th amendment of the US constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Today, it may seem like a simple thing. But the right to vote meant the right to choose your leader and in a world that damned women to the confines and child bearing and cooking, getting to choose your leader meant being part of the public discourse as equals. One small step, one giant leap. 100 years later, if Susan or the other women that fought and laid the foundations of women’s rights globally, including our own Savitribhai Phule or Kamini roy, were to look at the world today, they might be amused. Many has changed, many has not. Especially the commercialization of this day and month. In this world, it was bound to happen someday. But, their idea, thought and intent will be in our remembrance. And ideas are invincible. And what we as a society should do, is to change the ones that hasn’t, improve the ones that have, celebrate Women, not just their history and work, as equals and ‘march’ forward as a society. Women’s history is our history. March on mi’ ladies.

Heroine s REDEFINING
FEAR TO FIERCE
taapsee Ridhi Suri
Often in cinema, women have been portrayed weak. It isn’t until one learns about women empowerment and feminism, that they start noticing how it is always the hero who needs to possess strength, a woman who’s another woman’s enemy and worst of all, it’s the damsel who always needs to be saved by the hero. Thankfully, during the past few years, certainly a number of women-centric/ women-lead movies are climbing up the cinematic ladder. And one of the actresses who’s changing the so-called heroine’s norms and empowering women through her acting is Taapsee Pannu! It’s been a decade since the girl from Delhi, made her debut down South in cinema. Taapsee Pannu with her big, broad smile and gorgeous curls who started her career in 2010,
with the Telugu movie – ‘Jhummandi Naadam’ worked her way to success and won hearts all across the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and most recently – Bollywood! Her latest film, Thappad, has not just received positive critics but also serves as one of the major eye – opening movies to have been made by the film industry. Following Women’s Day, Taapsee Pannu opens up to Brew about her views on Women Empowerment, Gender Equality and lots more.

“There shouldn’t be just one day for women, it should be an entire year where we should celebrate women.”
Let’s rewind a little. How were your school and college days? I used to do a lot of public speaking during school and college. I’ve been the Head Girl of my school. I’ve participated in many debates and group discussions, be it interschool or college. I used to take part in many of my college activities. But now when you start working versus when you’re a student, the whole perception of life and being a woman is different. You know when you’re a student, you don’t really know that much about being open. You realize it more when you start working in the real world out there. So, it’s probably now after gaining experience at work that I started talking about women empowerment. How significant is Women’s Day for you? It is significant but I think we are very far away from equality. So, Women’s Day, I look at it as a day where I can promise or pledge to do something that will help
bring a change and help us move towards equality; at least a step. I celebrate Women’s day by taking that one step which, in my capacity as an actor, as a woman; I can do for equality or to bring equality.
vehicle should be moving in. therefore, it is important for both the wheels to be equally strong and moving in the same direction.
How important is Women Empowerment?
How inspired have you been after working in films like Saand Ki Aankh, Pink and Badla?
This is why we’ve still not achieved equality because we really need to empower each other. Even men -- they need to empower women. The women need to empower each other to make sure we realize what our potential is!
Very! Because each decision of such sort, when it has worked at the box office, has giving me confidence that I can go ahead and do more such films. So yes, these films have truly helped me gain a lot of confidence.
Until and unless we get that equal status in the society, I think we need to keep empowering each other.
In India, have you noticed progress or feel that there is enough work done to empower women?
How important is gender equality in the society?
Of course, I have in almost every field. Let’s talk about my own field… If you notice, five or ten years ago, there were not as many women-lead films as there are today. This year has a record number of female driven films in Hindi. So, which is a big change from what we were couple of years back. Hence, there is a definite progress.
For a society to progress in the right direction, both wheels of the society need to be in sync and be equally strong. If one wheel is not working well or is given the step-motherly attitude, it’s going to take a wrong direction rather than where your
14 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
Which women personalities served as a source of inspiration to you in your life outside of films? I don’t think there’s one particular person, but I do get inspired seeing different women in different fields. If you ask me, I have been impressed and been a big fan of Indian-American business executive and former CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi. She’s a very, very smart and intelligent woman. I look up to her.
What’s your word on giving out love to the society? As a human, I want to make sure that people know that there is a lack in love out there. It’s there in everyone’s life today and we can only mend this world with love, which we’re ignoring. Lately, I feel that the love between humans has really, really gone down. I just hope we get the love back, wherever we’ve missed it; whenever we’ve missed it. Because only then we will truly enjoy living!

“Life on her own terms” That’s what Jananie Baskaran wants the title of her biography to be. Born and raised in Muscat, Oman, Jananie moved to Toronto when she was 13-yearsold. With an honours degree in Health Sciences, she works as a healthcare professional in Toronto. Being involved in arts since a ripe age had Jananie develop a passion for photography. And it is with the same passion did she make up her mind to help transform a children’s life through education. In a chat with Brew, Jananie talks about how her life took a turn through photography, how important it is to educate children, her definition of Women’s Day and a lot more.

Tell us about yourself. I work as a healthcare professional in Toronto. Since a young age, I’ve always been involved in the arts in some form. I learnt Bharatanatyam and have always stayed involved in dance. And now my interest in arts has shifted towards photography and storytelling. What was it that pulled you towards photography? I used to love sketching at a young age. I used sketching to express my thoughts and creative ideas. As I grew older, I remember been given a camera during one of my family vacations and I loved the liberty it gave me to capture moments and tell stories that couldn’t be explained in words. It also helped me think in alternative perspectives to the norm. How has photography transformed you? Being involved in the arts is a therapeutic experience and photography is no exception. It has helped me overcome tough days and given me the confidence to continue pursuing my dreams regardless of who supported me. Photography has made me more open minded and has given me the opportunity to connect with artists from all across the world. I’ve always been an introvert, so photography became my medium to express myself and connect with like-minded artists from all across the world.
Canada. In addition, I wanted to raise funds to support educationbased projects for children who were not able to continue schooling due to the financial struggles and challenges beyond their control in Jaffna. So, I initiated Palm Roots – a photography-based auction and exhibit where I sold photos from my travels to raise funds for education-based projects in North / East Sri Lanka. What was the response you received initially for Palm Roots and after its success? Since this idea was one of a kind and hadn’t been done before, it was a challenge to gain the support of donors. There were trust issues related to making sure that the funds raised reached students who were truly in need or having confidence that their contribution would truly make a difference in a child’s life. However, once I took on the responsibility of providing each donor with receipts and proper follow up documentation of how their contribution was creating an impact in someone’s life, I instantly gained the support of people. For my first fundraiser, I raised about $2300 CAD and my most recent one raised close to $22,000 CAD. The growth in funds raised and support I received for Palm Roots was drastic and truly humbling.
Which would you say was your stand-out experience as a photographer? Undoubtedly, my venture with Palm Roots would have to be the highlight. Since I don’t take up event gigs, its a challenge to continuously create content to stand out as a photographer. But, once I found an aspect of photography that captured my interest through Palm Roots, it made my work more noticeable. Talk to us about Palm Roots. Palm Roots is my brainchild! It will always be an initiative that remains close to my heart. Since I spent most of my life in the Middle East and Canada, I’ve learnt about my culture, language and traditions through my parents, books and people in my environment. Everything I had learnt about Jaffna (my parents’ hometown) in addition to the war and rehabilitation was through media and word of mouth; until 2013, when I had the opportunity to visit Jaffna for the first time. I expected to see people in Jaffna in utter devastation after what they had experienced for many years of their life. Instead, the people I met in Jaffna were some of the most strong-willed people I had come across. They were so motivated to build back their life regardless of horrendous experiences they had gone through. This made me realize how blessed I was to have the life I had in Toronto and things I had taken for granted so far. We always complain about little things because our focus is usually on what we lack. Whereas, the amount of happiness, strength and gratitude that people in Jaffna had after experiencing trauma was unbelievable. Children in Jaffna were dedicated to pursuing an education and succeed in life and that motivated me to become a catalyst to their success. Once I returned back to Toronto, I wanted to share these stories and inspire people to be more grateful for the life they had in 18 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
What inspired you to combine creativity with charity? Typically, charity work is a sector that people focus on post-retirement or imagine people in non-profit as someone much older than me. I wanted people from my generation to be inspired to give back and become more involved with people in their countries of origin and the best way was to involve creativity in it. From a marketing point of view, creativity adds a wow factor to the charity aspect and adds curiosity to the initiative.
Talk to us about the earlier stages of Palm Roots where combining creativity and charity was a new concept. I had two intentions behind combining creativity with charity. Firstly, it was to prove that artforms could be used as a tool to create change in society and convey messages about societal issues. And secondly, to prove charity work and social entrepreneurship isn’t boring! Combining a photography exhibit with fundraising was a one of its kind experiences for most people. It attracted an audience ranging from young artists/entrepreneurs, curious to see the combination of art and charity to the more successful, accomplished entrepreneurs who attended the event to contribute to education-based projects and support a young artist. Being a new concept, it proved to be an advantage I had over other fundraisers and charity-based initiative. The key to finding success with fundraising is to always find newer ways to present ideas and connect with the target audience from different age groups. 19 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
What does Women’s Day mean to you? Women’s Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of anyone who identifies themselves as a woman. I personally believe that we are gradually moving towards celebrating women and their accomplishments on a regular basis so I choose to celebrate women’s day everyday. In addition to celebrating achievements, women’s day should be used to raise awareness about the discrimination we still face as women and highlight the lack of equality and contribution women have in global development. How do you think women should be celebrated across the globe? In my opinion, women don’t require grand gestures of celebration to remind them of their value. One of the most beautiful traits we have is our selflessness. We go above and beyond for our family and people we love and equally achieve goals beyond imagination with minimum expectation. Regardless of, if they are home makers or CEOs, women selflessly dedicate their life to their dreams. The best way to celebrate women across the globe is little gestures of appreciation everyday - whether it is something tangible, words of appreciation or titles that outline their true potential. Where do you see yourself heading in 2020? I hope to move higher in career and simultaneously keep building a brand for myself. I want to see Palm Roots reach
a wider range of audience, internationally as well and I truly believe that this recognition by Brew Magazine is a beautiful reminder that my dreams are manifesting! I hope the world that’s currently in standstill due to COVID-19 soon gets back to normal and we’re all able to live in a more healthy and appreciative life hereon. If there’s one thing you wish that people would do more, what would it be? Letting love & kindness conquer the ego. Sometimes we take life way too seriously or think we have to present ourselves a certain way to maintain a reputation. We let our ego overpower our ability to be kind. It is a great trait to look out for yourself but I believe its equally important to be kind, always spread love and be more empathetic to each other. With COVID-19 taking over the world at the moment, we have all become aware of how important it is to be compassionate and sacrifice certain parts of our life for the well-being of the world. Regardless of who we are in societal hierarchy, a virus changed our status and turned us all into vulnerable beings. The most important asset we have in life is our physical and mental health; not the material assets or accomplishments we gain. I recently came across powerful words by Bruce Lee where he talks about how important it is to empty our mind and keep flowing like water. Be kind and never let anything else get in the way of living life on your own terms. Just keep flowing.
What’s your idea of vacation? My idea of a vacation is being away from everyday work chores, either by a body of water or a country I’ve never visited before. Most of my conversations revolve around work or creative projects. So, I cherish my time away with my loved ones, where I am a complete stranger in an environment free from expectations!

Naresh Nil, who wanted to join the army when he was younger, and was a part of the National Cadet Corps at school and who was also quite adept at rifle shooting has without a preamble found that Photography is his passion. As he grew, he had to reconcile with the fact that his energies had to be redirected elsewhere, which is when he found photography.

Among your works, which one is your favourite? Why? Dark Is Divine - a project against colour discrimination. This project is my favourite because it motivated a lot of people. I believe in it a lot. “Divinity has many forms and colours. This initiative goes beyond common perceptions and celebrates the Divine by showcasing their beauty and majesty in their dark-skinned forms. Dark is not just beautiful, but divine.” When did you choose to pursue a career as a photographer? I was in my teen years when I first saw my grandfather’s picture for the first time. That’s when.

How would you describe your photographic style? Its pure fashion, portrait and lifestyle. How long have you been a photographer? From 2008 June till now - 12 years. What is the most difficult part in being a photographer? Becoming a photographer is very easy in this digital era but becoming a professional photographer and commercially successful is extremely difficult. Why? I never regret investing on photography equipment. Although, I hate phones. How transform the person, place or thing in front of you to your perfect picture? Communicate with the model as much as you could make them comfortable and confident. What is it you aim to achieve with your pictures? Her; Was it in her or Just her? It was magic. Dark and tragic Or bright just about right? She saw the rainbows fade away; She saw the sun lose it’s day. She saw the trees hunt for shade And hide it’s face; Behind the clouds Also deep within the lakes. She cried aloud When mountain moved to Mohammed At the brink when love finally surrendered. Was it In her or Just her? It was magic. Dark and tragic Or bright just about right? Was she queer by day and sly by night? Was she here to slay or bed? She was a personification, A metaphor, alas, without meaning. She lacked in her what she found around. She tasted what went missing but Never was it to be found.
She was a portrait of the puzzle itself Somehow that gave meaning And somewhere that let her be herself. Was it in her or just her? It was magic. Dark and tragic Or bright just about right? She wasn’t in a rush Wasn’t in a queue She was in solace, in awe For she was looking around what she had lost in a few. She said there wasn’t time, For she was told. Looking around in neglect and thirst, She forgot what was on hold. She craved what was hidden inside her She caved when someone stood beside her. She longed for companyHonestly, maybe her own. Weighing upon her The world looking down upon; False pressure was her companion And societal norms her add-on. Was it In her or Just her? It was magic. Dark and tragic Or bright; just about right?

‘She is beauty… She is grace… But let’s be real, She’s much more than just a pretty face!’ March 8th may be the one day for the celebration of Women, but it’s no surprise that Brew celebrates Women every chance it gets. In the past year, Brew has had a chance to interview a variety of women with various cultures and lifestyles. But you know what’s the best thing about each and every one of them?
All of the women have fascinating stories to tell. Hence, Brew put together a collage of smart, strong and inspiring women; all in all – The Best of Brew! ANANNYA PAREKH She is called the Big Sister and rightfully so. Anannya Parekh started working towards women empowerment back in 2016. A year after her journey began, Anannya visited an Islamic orphanage in Chennai where she learnt how curious girl children are to learn and explore. This was enough for the bright eyed Anannya with a fierce smile to take the first step towards women empowerment – Education! With the help of the social media application; Instagram, Anannya had girls to volunteer and teach children free of cost. Moreover, Anannya stands as an unshaken warrior, empowering and empowered. She quotes, ‘Through all this, the most empowered woman is myself.’

SUNDARI AKKA Back in August, during Madras Day, Brew dug deep into the sands of the Marina and reached the infamous Sundari Akka! Sundari Akka, a middle-aged woman runs a small eatery which goes by the name – ‘Sundari Akka Kadai’ on the banks of Marina Beach.
ADITI MITTAL She makes a person laugh their hearts out but, in an industry, which is dominated by men, it was definitely challenging for Aditi because no lady was doing it. And this made her more determined to change it.
Sundari Akka first came to Chennai in 1976, in the hunt of a better life and to meet MGR, whom she did. Later, Sundari Akka married her betrothed cousin with whom she later had 2 beautiful children. She might’ve started her eatery to support her husband who was working labour but soon it became clear that Sundari Akka was no less than
a mother who made it her life’s mission to feed people to their hearts content. ‘My day starts at 4/5 in the morning and ends at 10. I’ve to be on my toes because if I slacked one bit, Sundari Akka won’t be Sundari Akka!’
Aditi claims that hard work is the key. One has to struggle and try out open mics after open mics. Only when a person tries out their jokes and pays attention to the audience do they become successful as a comedian. She is keen on breaking stereotypes where women are pitted against women or where women aren’t praised on their accomplishments. Kudos to you Aditi! ‘Aditi is funny is how I’d like to be known. You have to love everything that you talk about. For me personally, the moment I don’t understand something or fall in love with something, I start talking about it whether I write about it or not. So yeah, these are a few things that make you a comedian.’

DEEPA AATHREYA Deepa Aathreya may be called the successful Founder and CEO of the School of Success, but success did not come to her easily. Growing up, Deepa’s story tells us that she wasn’t any different than the other girl. She was bullied in school for being overweight which took a jab on her confidence. But a motivational speaker in her middle school inspired her to take charge of her own life. The same year, Deepa was asked to read something out of an English textbook by her teacher and when she did, the
teacher complimented her on her communication skills. That small achievement made a massive difference in Deepa’s life. Yet again life wasn’t easy for Deepa as she nearly faced death not once but twice, underwent a financial disaster and hit by poverty so badly that she had to sell balloons on the beach. Nonetheless, Deepa rose from all this and is one of the best entrepreneurs of the day. “Whatever I did or struggled for in life has been for money but now my dream to try and help change children’s lives” says Deepa who’s helped transform the lives of lakhs of students.
In 2019, she was titled the Trans-queen India Brand ambassador. She was the first trans-person to represent India for Trans International Beauty Pageant. She has won Miss Popular voted by the public. But all of this had a cost since belonging to a different gender was not easily accepted. She was thrown out of her house when her parents came to realization that Namitha belonged to a different gender. When she was all alone with no accommodation, Namitha Ammu met Ms. Sudha, another transwoman who became her foster mother. She helped Namitha through the phase and also counselled her parents. It was in 2014, when Namitha participated in a community function and won as a model. Realization hit Namitha that if she could win weighing 120 kgs, then she could definitely do more. 2016 was her big break when she won Miss Chennai and the rest is history! Keeping her head high Namitha states, ‘I consider myself the queen chosen by the people.’

“Medicine, Law, Business, Engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” Said the late Robin Williams and his words couldn’t have been more true. Many in todays world migrate towards art. Why? Because art provides freedom like none other. Some play music, some dance, some paint and much more. It provides a canvas for people especially women who have difficulty breaking norms. Art plays such an important part in the society but sadly not many acknowledge it. Hence, to take people back to the time when they dipped their fingers and painted without a care in the world, Brew brings back one such artist who paints her heart out and who’s paintings express her better than words…

Having worked with most of the galleries in Chennai- Apparao art gallery, Gallery Veda, Forum art gallery, the art41 poet garden- where she has been plenty exposed to Indian contemporary art and is now keen on expanding her horizon even further. In other simple words, she has also been regularly travelling to France since her young age and likely a lot of European art influence comes from visiting the galleries, learning about art and inspirations from there. To which I retorted with- “had travelling to a place been enough for improving exponentially in talents then the world wouldn’t be here- we need the skill, determination to make something good out of what we’ve been served and we need clarity. She does, she is and she has.” What is the concept behind this art work of yours in particular? The overall concept revolves around defense mechanisms based on Sigmund Freud’s theory; coupled with problems that exist in reality that are most often brushed away by society, a society that encourages repressing of emotions. Mental hygiene is as important as physical hygiene. In my series I merely point out the existence of troubles and emotional turmoil drawing from personal experience, the personal experience being the loss of a loved one at a young age. The pain attached to mental traumas are equal to any physical pain that one experiences. Thus, the point I try to make here is that one must give these emotions the importance that it needs, deal with the consequences rather than suppressing it or brushing it away. Living in denial, projecting it on other areas of their lives are some of the defense mechanisms that the mind adapts in order to deal with the pain. Painting is my Catharsis. “Sublimation is one of the defense mechanisms derived by Freud. It takes place when we manage to displace our emotions into a constructive rather than destructive activity (A. Freud, 1936). This might, for example, be artistic.” The painting is cordoned off by dividers made from PVC pipes to create a sense of privacy. The sounds that play in the background are sounds of a person swimming, a car crash and a piano composition of mine, arranged together in a dramatic sequence. FIRST CIRCLE The first Circle is the ‘Memory Pond’, a white circle covered with nails that’s laid on the ground, with traces of flower cut outs that are either fading or fully present representing good memories and fading memories. The nails either pierce through these flower silhouettes indicating a good memory turning bad or the nails go around it leaving the good memory untouched. Upon viewing the reel one can see me stand on this memory pond, witnessing pain within the closed edges of the view master. SECOND CIRCLE The second circle, ‘The Aquarium’ is a literal depiction of the aquarium that I’ve visited as a child. The painting depicts people engaged in prayerful gestures. Now these references to the spiritual attachment that most people develop after a traumatic event such as loss, something I’ve experienced first hand. It also highlights a certain level of hypocrisy. In the reel the painting is enclosed by a black grill, the design adopted from the grill that surrounds my swimming pool.

THIRD CIRCLE The third circle, ‘Comfort Zone’ is a hoop with a lamb sitting on the inside. This refers to regression which is another defense mechanism where one resorts to a habit or possession from their childhood, e.g. comfort food. In the reel the lamb is caught between strings of blue thread. FOURTH CIRCLE The fourth is ‘Stability’ where a woman is seen falling down steps that seem to be coming from nowhere, or the middle of a void. She seems to be holding on to a rope that appears from the bottom of the composition, a sense of uncertainty but some form of support. This again creates a contrast in the reel with the nude female body falling without any stability or support, slipping down and succumbing to her fall much like we do with the many problems of our mind, a gradual hard decent. FIFTH CIRCLE The fifth circle is ‘Wall Flower’. The painting depicts a woman diving into a small circular enclosed pool. This talks about how we too dive into situations without knowing the depth of the issue itself. In the reel the female figure is in the nude shown diving into a cemented box with wallflowers on its surface. The wall flowers indicate a personality type. SIXTH CIRCLE The sixth circle is the ‘Ostrich Theory’. The Ostrich theory: The “ostrich effect” is the avoidance of apparently risky financial situations by pretending they do not exist. There’s also the saying, “Don’t be an ostrich and hide your head in the sand.” The version on the reel shows a nude woman burying her head in the sea. The nudity that is opposed by the literal representation of an ostrich not only directly tells people that denial is something that we all indulge in but also speaks about the sexualizing of something as normal as the female body. SEVENTH CIRCLE The seventh circle is the ‘Reel’, a blown-up version of the view master’s reel. The squares of the reel are seven in number (standard number of images on a reel) and represent the seven colours of the rainbow. In the center is a whirlpool that can be rotated. In the reel, the image poses the question “did you like watching”, forcing the viewer to feel like that of a voyeur for that moment. The View Master not only holds significance from my childhood but also has an innocent value to it. When one picks it up hoping to reminisce childhood memories they are struck with images of the painful reality, that’s tied up with male gaze and the voyeuristic tendency of the society. All the paintings have the element of water that ties it all together. Some of the artworks have dashes that is drawn from Indian art, a pattern of sorts, symbolizing the monotony of life. “Viewing Sublimare”, the title, talks about the action of the viewer who “views” my sublimation, “sublimare” being the Latin origin of the word. “Viewing” also being a wordplay on the center piece of my project, the view-master.

Do you feel that it’s important to convey your own beliefs and opinions within your art? And should your work therefore be viewed as autobiographical? My works of art can definitely be seen as autobiographical especially the view master. Each installation is a reflection of my conscious and or subconscious, whether I want to admit it or not. I learn through experience and the artistic revelations are full of different kinds of experiences- be it spiritual, religious or even personal. I’ve encountered my fair share of tragedy, obstacles and blessings. One simply has to seize the Opportunity where it chooses to show present itself and will have to make a pattern of events as they make sense. It’s how one marks their place in today’s millennial generation. Often, these experiences are my teachers, my influences and messages in my art. The beauty of darkness is that it forces you to create light. Not all art works need to be defined or guided by darkness and not all hearts are meant to be broken to create art. But there is a separate unbounded joy that comes out of creating something so pure, so beautiful from a place of darkness and sorrow. When you are guided to creativity therein lies true freedom. I always learn a lot about myself and what’s going on inside me subconsciously through the process of conceiving and producing my art. To me, art is something really personalfor the creator and the spectator, to each is their own and that is the unbounded beauty of art. Does true society’s reaction to an artist, worry you? Have you been in any such situation? I always get asked - “Is this a lucrative choice?” To be honest, yes it bothers me. But I’ve learnt that you cannot win everyone over and you don’t have to convince everyone, as long as you know what you want, the world is your canvas. It’s a daily struggle to not let it get to you, but we all have our days. I don’t think anyone really understands what an art student or an artist in progress goes through. It’s the lack of clarity that brings about trouble. I don’t know where I’d be or what I’d be working on in a couple of months. But in a society filled with graduates and straight jacket mentality, it’s difficult to paint my world in colours they’d understand. I don’t have a set schedule or planned sketch to show, but I have situations which need my spontaneous decisions and creative solutions to tackle problems. It’s in the ‘heat of the moment’ sort of a field which I’ve chosen especially when it comes to freelancing projects that I take up, and not everyone can wrap their mind around it with ease. Sometimes I’ve realized that one just has to cut the rest of the world out in order to listen to the inner self/ voice and let that guide you. We just have to take it one day at a time and see what the bigger picture we can make. 37 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020

A TWIRL FOR T. Gokul Sriman
Made of brass, weighing about 2-5 kilograms, this 19th century musical marvel is one of the greatest gifts given to the western music– the Saxophone. It is the most vocal and produces the richest sound in the family of woodwind instruments. This iconic European instrument has been grabbing major attention in India due to a sensational, record breaking musician, “Saxophone” Lavanya.

At age of six, Lavanya, interested in music, started taking violin and singing lessons. Years later, when she was in high school, the saxophone grabbed her attention and she wanted to learn the art of playing one. Wanting to set herself apart from the mainstream woman musicians, she started taking up saxophone lessons from the great saxophonist Shri Kadri Gopalnath at her father’s bequest, with whom he maintained a close friendship.

Hailing from Mysore, Lavanya comes from a family with rich musical background. Her family is home to over 10 percussionists including her grandfather was a musician at the Royal Court of Mysore and her father, Mr. Sainath is a well-known mridangist. When asked about the early days of her training, she fondly recalls the countless days her father would sit next to her and her sister, in full professional attire, along with his mridangam just so his daughters got the feel of playing at a concert, every time they practiced. She also recalls the countless days her father made her listen to numerous concerts on the radio, cassettes and CDs to improve her knowledge. Her family, her father especially has consistently been a huge source of support and inspiration throughout her career. She is well-versed in classical Carnatic music, and with the western counter-parts such as Jazz and particularly, her uniqueness is accentuated by her prolificacy in Fusion. “People generally come with requests to play famous movie songs and when I play them the excitement is palpable. When I play in the southern cities like Chennai the shows consist more of Carnatic songs and further north of the country, at say Mumbai, the concerts comprise more of western music, both attributed to the audience’s choice” she said in a chat about her concert experiences in the country. Her performances have consistently been well-received with an air of appreciation and encouragement – both in India and abroad – as people are enchanted by her enchanting skills.

During the early days of her career, Lavanya and her sister, Subbulaxmi, were known as the “Sax sisters” and played the saxophone together at various occasions. Although the duo was a great success at every stage they stepped onto, for a long time now, Lavanya has been flying solo. Recently, she toured four different cities in the U.S. during the Festival of India event. In her pursuit of musical mastery, she has travelled to 17 different countries, performed with multiple, well-known artistes like, Grammy award winner Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the famous sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee, the versatile musician “Drums” Sivamani and caused quite the rumble at every occasion. She has garnered various accolades - the Madhura Murali Puraskar award (named after the famous Padma Vibhushan winning vocalist M.Balamuralikrishna), Rajyothsava Award given by the Government of Karnataka, the Yuvakala Bharathi Award, an entry in the Limca Book of World Records as the only woman Saxophonist in India, to name a few. 41 I BREW LIFESTYLE I MARCH 2020
Being the one of the top women saxophonists in the world comes with its own demands – rigorous practice and rehearsal sessions, learning the routines of musicians with whom you share the stage, follow a proper diet containing walnuts, almonds, milk and fitness plan to meet the physical strength requirements of the saxophone. Due to this very reason – the sax being a very physically demanding instrument, Lavanya believes that children should only take up sax lessons at around the age of 15 as, if they are any younger, any practice of this heavy and complicated instrument would be much more difficult. Lavanya has also been teaching a lot of aspiring saxophonists online. She has students from the US, Switzerland, Sri Lanka and Dubai. Some of them also visit her in India during vacation to gain a more interactive learning experience. Furthermore, she has joined hands with a lot of DJs in Mumbai in an effort to popularise her instrument. Finally, when I inquire about her future plans and aspirations, she says “I want to grow more as a musician in the western and fusion genres and incorporate new styles in the latter. Aside from that, my lifelong dream has been to share a stage with the popular American saxophonist, Kenny G”.
