Dear Readers, What a couple of weeks we have had! Coming from a drought-ridden country town originally, I never thought for a minute I would ever say I wish this rain would stop! But the devastation it has caused in our area was unbelievable! The best thing to come out of this was the community came together and joined forces, vax and un-vaxed to dig in and help where they could. It was beautiful and heart-warming to see all the offers of help, support and care for our community come rolling in, reuniting our community. This edition has a special flood feature in it, highlighting all the amazing people, out there giving. I know there is so many more of you out there, so from all of us, thank you. This is what makes living in our beautiful district our home. YOU! The community, coming together as one. I take my hat off to the VMR and the SES who volunteer their time to make sure we are safe. They do this at the risk of their own lives, their own homes, and their families. How can we say thank you enough? Without them, we would have been in a lot more trouble.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Sometimes in life – as the old saying goes – we “can’t see the wood for the trees”, and it often takes someone else to identify the real wealth around us…. not in the luxuries of life, perhaps – but in PEOPLE!

I read, recently, how the people of Denmark have put this concept into practice, by opening up new libraries …. featuring PEOPLE, primarily, not books. And if reports on the Danish experiment are correct, the Danes’ experimental and innovative new concept of a “people library” is aimed at reducing prejudices and bridging gaps in their communities, and encouraging greater appreciation, by people, of each other. It involves inviting people into their new “human libraries” (so named) to hear the life stories and experiences of people in their own communities, cutting across all ethnic, religious, cultural, and racial groups. Reportedly, it has – noticeably – begun bringing Danes closer together, in their communities …. and the concept is claimed to be catching on, now, in some 50 countries. In the Danish experiment, speakers delivering their own and their family life histories are allotted 30 minutes to speak, either one-to-one or in small groups. Throughout Australia, the Men’s Shed and Women’s Shed movements, and
various other clubs (and theme-based organisations) are helping, daily, to bring people closer together and to highlight the capacities (and worth) of people around them. But most of these are gender-based. Few involve both sexes getting together to get to know each other better - and to develop a more accurate appreciation of people’s individual worth, and the contribution they are (or could be) making within our communities…. with greater encouragement and integration. The simplicity of it all, in our modern societies now seemingly “gobsmacked” (or entranced) by the magic of ever-changing technology (and advances), was what impressed me most. It turned back the clock, for me, to the times when the technology junkies (and other people) weren’t glued to their TV sets, computers, and mobile phones, as many are today – but people actually got together, regularly, to just TALK TO EACH OTHER. This is how it was, in my earliest days – when the nearest thing to technology was a “wireless” (a radio, to those who don’t remember these times) …. and a wall-mounted home telephone (for those who could afford it). I reckon a Danish-style “human library” (even just a few days a week) would go down a treat among the residents of Bribie Island and its adjacent mainland communities.

s many might know or have heard, the fibre optic Telstra network on the Pacific Harbour Golf Course Estate collapsed on Sunday 20 February 2022. As a result, 429 households were without the Internet, landlines and streaming services (eg Foxtel) and were informed the services would not be restored until 13 March 2022. The Estate is well planned, and all the cables are underground and rather than the NBN there is a fibre optic system - Telstra Velocity. Rumours abound as to the reason for the outage; ranging from the cables somehow being cut by a person or persons unknown to ‘unscheduled repairs and maintenance.' Other tongue in cheek reasons cited were that the Estate had been hacked by the Chinese or even Aliens! A sense of humour always helps in situations such as these. However, the outage did cause much angst and outrage
HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY amongst householders. If it was for unscheduled repairs and maintenance what does that mean? Why couldn’t the maintenance be scheduled, and residents advised the same way they are when there is an electricity or water outage? Why was it for so long? Many blamed the Estate Developers for the problem, while others blamed Telstra and abused their front-line staff for something they may have had nothing to do with. This is not an uncommon reaction in society today – i.e., lash out and blame without knowing the facts. For some residents, the outage was just an inconvenience. For others, it was a surprise to realise how much they depend on Internet-enabled devices. Since the lockdowns, created by the pandemic, our homes have become our sanctuary and we have come to depend on the Internet for our news and entertainment.
But for many, the outage caused serious problems. It meant they couldn’t work from home or do homework, online learning courses or University assignments; couldn’t pay bills, and for the elderly and disabled, many of whom depend on their landlines and Internet, a major safety and wellbeing concern. These outages have happened previously; however, they have never taken this long to remedy. Anecdotal stories, from old hands on the Estate, say that outages have occurred due to flooding of the underground wires, while on another occasion the cables were eaten through by white ants. Others talk of numerous occasions when builders have accidentally cut the cables when preparing foundations. How hard would it be for the cables to be encased in a waterproof plastic, concrete, or steel tunnel/conduit – or at least some sort of impenetrable cover? Could cost be the
automated voice that you could use the Telstra App! As we don’t really know what happened perhaps people might hold fire on their abuse of Telstra staff. The person we spoke to, on two occasions over the long and frustrating first week, was courteous and went out of his way to help us. Residents have invested large sums of their hardearned money in the Estate and so should be receiving a fast, reliable Internet service. Questions must be asked about this outage – particularly why it happened, who caused it, and what reimbursement will be offered by the offenders? Is it likely to be a regular event? I wanted to give a big shout out and heartfelt thank you to 4 young people on Bribie!! On Sunday in the midst of it all, 2 young guys and 2 young girls came down my driveway on Gidya Ave (all dressed up as cartoon characters) They just went out walking to see if anyone needed help. They hauled sandbags, shifted heavy furniture out of the flood, washing machine, fridge and saved my mower. They were amazing, wonderful youth who lifted our spirits, and the girls even went back home to locate tarps for us! So again, thank you!

There were four young locals there who were not only filling sandbags, but also uploading them into vehicles that pulled up. SEWERAGE UPDATE ALL RESIDENTS IN THE BRIBIE ISLAND AREA YOUR SEWERS ARE GOING TO BE BLOCKED TODAY AS WELL UNTIL THE RAIN STOPS. THE SAME PROBLEMS AS YESTERDAY ARE STILL WITH US TODAY. STAY SAFE Brad - Plumbing Bribie Is. Read this post for information and what to do. You may be experiencing problems with your Sewers at the moment. Toilets not flushing properly and or Gurgling noises in the drains. There is nothing you can do at this stage as I've been advised by Unity water. The Unity Waters (UW) Sewage Infrastructure is being flooded with rainwater and the pump stations are not coping. If you are in these areas make sure the ORG Grate as shown in the photo is free to rise or pop out if your mains back up. This will stop any internal flooding in your home. I’ve now reported this problem to Unity Water and they are responding as quickly as they can. UW has advised if any internal surging occurs that causes flooding, to contact Your insurance company immediately. There is no action we can take on your property when the UW mains are blocked. If you are being flooded with rising sewage, ring Unity Waters Emergency 1300 086 489 but be patient as their crews are flat out at the moment. Hope This Helps . Stay Safe. Brad

With the Bribie Island Community of Whit Patch isolated due to flood waters, local franchisee Niravkumar and his team rolled up their sleeves and got cooking. The team were able to donate 50 pizzas that were picked up and delivered back to hungry locals by boat! If there’s one thing for sure in these “unprecedented times” it’s that the strength within local Australian communities is unwavering.

I Acts of Kindness
have been the fortunate recipient of many acts of kindness, some large, some small, Peculiarly, it is the small acts of generosity that I remember most. The simple word or deed that acts as a balm when one is feeling bruised. In case I have already lost my reader, no, this is not going to be a sticky, over-sentimental piece of gooey writing, just a small thank you to those who have made my way in life less troubled. A belated breadand-butter note that my parents urged me to write, to acknowledge birthday and Christmas presents, which I sometimes wrote and sometimes “forgot”. Previously, I have mentioned my infantile eczema, which I am still waiting, with growing impatience, to outgrow. This was diagnosed by my infant school classmates as leprosy. Bless the little boy who whispered in my ear that he did not think my leprosy was that bad. Yet, even today, I think that inside this apparently confident clown is a small girl with leprosy struggling to get out. Whilst my mother was ill with TB, my brother and I were looked after by a series of housekeepers, some of whom would not have gained Dr Spock's approval. A diet of egg and chips does pall after several weeks, and I was so grateful to the bakery lady who would call me in and give me a lardy bun. This was a real treat, being a large bread bun with dried fruit enclosed, and in this case, topped with white icing. Heaven! Have one ready for my last meal! The schoolteacher who introduced me to literacy, on noticing my distress when asked to practise what was termed, “running writing”, enquired what was wrong. I damply explained that I did not know how to “running write” or what it was. “Oh, Elaine, then just print.” Magical words! The sun could shine again!

The kindness of friends shown in small acts, holding my hand whilst skipping, the innumerable acts of kindness shown throughout the years by my friends from school years and those who became friends when establishing my new life in Australia. Friends I have had for years and have stood by me in good times and in bad. The group of friends whom I would meet for coffee and who would make me laugh, giving me the therapy, I needed most when I was still raw from the loss of my husband, the gentle phone enquiry by another friend asking if I was OK when I failed to turn up to his morning tea. I had got the days confused. Another friend, noticing that I was looking less than
my usual cheerful self, took the time to show me videos of ABBA reunited and made me laugh. The lift I got to a doctor from someone who did not really know me well, another friend who drove me to Morayfield, making sure I had my full complement of “jabs”. Too far for even my willing friend Ferrari, although he always does his uncomplaining best. I shall refrain from mentioning individuals in this article as it would become a long list of names and deeds and for fear, I should omit someone and perhaps cause offence. However, the kindness I have received over the years is not forgotten, nor the people associated with them. My husband was a very gentle and kind man, a happy relationship is not made up of grand gestures, but rather of small acts of consideration and kindness. A little humour can always oil the wheels. Why is it that some people are naturally kind; is it Nature or Nurture? Both, I suspect. Recently, I have had to stay with me, for a week, my cousin's son and his family, consisting of his wife and three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. I observed the family group as a kind of social experiment, and I must say that, from my perspective, they got full marks. Three-year-old’s do not find it easy to be tolerant when their carefully set-up games are interfered with by younger brothers, who either want to take over or adopt a bull-in-achina-shop approach. Calmly, her parents exhorted her to share her toys. Share was a word often used. Gradually the concept was mastered, and due praise given when she was seen to share her Zooper-dooper, frozen ice block, with her brother. The lesson was unexpectedly reinforced when she had attempted to win a chocolate bar from a machine to no avail. A little girl, no more than 7 years or eight, who had observed her disappointment, took her turn next and won two bars of chocolate, one of which, with a big smile and unprompted by any adult, she gave to our three-year-old. Kindness from a stranger. Kindness is contagious, the more acts of kindness one receives, the easier it becomes to pass on the “infection”. I hope that I manage to pass on all the kindness “bacteria” that I have received from so many over the years; a grateful thank you to all who have infected me. I am aware that this article is a little different to my usual, not too preachy, I trust. I promise to return to comedy next fortnight.

International Women’s Day makes me stop and reflect of the plight of women throughout the generations, the progress that has been made and where women are now. I reflect on equality, education, financial security, justice and personal safety. I want every woman to feel courageous, empowered, loved, respected, safe, supported and valued. If each of us have an attitude of being available to opportunities that present themselves-to make a difference in another woman’s life-then we should just do it. Don’t over think it- just do it! Being that listening ear, giving someone a contact phone number, or directing them to a professional, may make a positive difference to the life of a woman who has reached out to us. B
efore any Jurisdiction on the Eastern Seaboard of Australia considers embracing Australia Eastern Daylight Time – AEDT – there is a much bigger problem within our current time zones that must be addressed. It has existed since 1894 when Australia first embraced ‘Standard Time’ Zones. Once this anomaly has been corrected, the current form of AEDT becomes obsolete. In October 1884 an International Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C., recommended the introduction of a global system of time zones based on the Greenwich Meridian with zones of 1 hour difference for every 15
degrees of longitude from the Greenwich Meridian. Among its other recommendations was the strong opinion that ‘major population areas [e.g. State Capitals] should be included in the most appropriate time zone’. In November 1892, an intercolonial conference of surveyors was held in Melbourne to consider the Washington proposals and recommended the introduction of three time zones for Australia in which standard time would be ‘the mean solar times of 120 degrees, 135 degrees*** and 150 degrees east of Greenwich’. In Australia, the setting of time zones is the responsibility of the State and Territory Governments. By 1894 all states and territories had enacted time acts that defined the time zones and the mean solar times for use within those zones. {The Act that still applies in Queensland is known as the ‘STANDARD TIME ACT 1894’. The responsibility for the management of this legislation

Firstly, Adelaide’s longitudinal co-ordinate is 138.35 degrees east of Greenwich – outside the 135 degrees *** boundary mentioned above. In1898/99 South Australia, as was its right, advanced CENTRAL STANDARD TIME by 30 minutes to 142.5 degrees. ANOMALY SOLVED – Adelaide cannot be shifted but the boundary of the appropriate time zone can be. Secondly, Sydney and Brisbane – two major ‘State Capitals’ are located at 151.12 and 153.01 degrees, respectively east of Greenwich. Both cities - as well as a number of other ‘major population areas in Queensland and New South Wales - are outside the original 150-degree boundary of Eastern Standard Time. The total area engulfed within this anomaly stretches from
Rockhampton in the north to Wollongong in the south and as far west as Goondiwindi and Tamworth. Approximately 44% of our national population lives within this area. Why our eastern seaboard politicians will not address this problem by using the power they have within their respective portfolios is puzzling. The problem will disappear by advancing Eastern Standard Time by 30 minutes – 7.5 degrees, PERMANENTLY - as did South Australia in 1898/99. At last – all clocks in Australia would be as they should have been back in 1894. No more confusion at the border/s. No more extra costs and loss of revenue when the clocks on the eastern seaboard are not in unison. No more than three time zones across the whole Australian Continent. Innumerable benefits will accrue to Australia when the necessary changes to the relevant legislation are enacted – the most significant of which will be the obsolescence of AEDT, FOREVER.

he New Year is a good time to think about building up your retirement nest egg using your super. In the future, Government pensions may barely cover basic living costs and leave nothing for a few of life’s simple pleasures. All levels of Government are maxing out their (our) credit cards. Coupled with an aging workforce and a shrinking number of taxpayers it is inevitable that pensions will be squeezed, and the pension age will continue to be pushed up. Your super may be your financial salvation so take every opportunity to top it up. Also super is a tax-effective way to save as investment earnings are taxed at 15% instead of at your marginal tax rate. Firstly, a government co-contribution is worth taking advantage of if you qualify. The maximum co-contribution is currently $500 if you earn less than $41,112 and you contribute $1000 after tax to your super fund. The cocontribution reduces progressively and cuts out when you earn more than $56,112 See the ATO co-contribution calculator for details. HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Concessional contributions are, as the name implies, pre-tax contributions usually made by your employer, yourself if you are self-employed, and/or through salary sacrifice. The “concession” you receive for such contributions is a 15% tax charge instead of your marginal tax rate that you would pay if you took the earnings in cash. The amount you can contribute pre-tax is currently capped at $27,500 per year and penalties apply if you exceed the cap. Non-Concessional contributions can be made from after-tax income or savings and have more generous contribution ceilings. If you are under age 65 and you have less than $1.7m in super (including the non-concessional contribution that you intend to make), the annual nonconcessional contributions limit is $110,000. You can
contribute $330,000 at the start of a three-year period using what is known as the “bring forward” rule. In July 2019 the Government provided another opportunity to top up your super if you are over 65 and decide to downsize to a smaller property. From July 2022, the age limit has dropped to 60. You can contribute up to $300,000 ($300,000 each for a couple) from the proceeds of selling your home. To be eligible to make a downsizer contribution to super the amount you are contributing must be from the proceeds of selling your home where the contract of sale is exchanged on or after 1 July 2018. You or your spouse must have owned your home for 10 years or more prior to the sale. Your home must be in Australia and not a caravan, houseboat, or other mobile homes. and you must
not have previously made a downsizer contribution to your super from the sale of another home. You must make your downsizer contribution within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of the sale, which is usually at the date of settlement. The downsizer contribution does not count towards your contributions cap, and you do not have to purchase another property to qualify. If you are contemplating selling your home and contributing to your super from the sale proceeds it is important to consider the impact on any Centrelink benefits that you receive. Whereas the money tied up in your permanent place of living does not count towards the Centrelink assets test, downsizer money transferred to super will be treated as an asset, which will reduce your benefits if the value of your
assets exceeds the allowable maximum. Superannuation is a complex issue. ong before Carrie Underwood was singing about taking a Louisville slugger to a cheating boyfriends’ headlights and Miranda Lambert was singing about a special delivery of gunpowder and lead, Loretta Lynn was raising a ruckus with her own defiant lyrics. And she wasn’t just warning a tomcatting husband with songs like “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” either. The Country Music Hall of Fame member was also putting ambitious ladies in their place with “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” — as well as empowering them in the controversial birthcontrol anthem “The Pill.” While Lynn didn’t write all her lyrics, she sure delivered them like she did.

As feminist anthems go, 1975's "The Pill" is a doozy because it's as funny as it is cutting. Lynn sings as a protagonist who's fed up with getting pregnant, while her no-account husband is still out playing around, so she scores some birth control, declares that it's his turn to watch the kids and steps out herself.
SONG FACTS
The lyrics celebrated the freedom that the advent of the birth control pill afforded to married women who didn't want to have more kids, and while the lyrics were not particularly salacious, 60 country radio stations across the country banned the song for its theme as the conservative country music scene still wasn't ready for a song celebrating the use of contraception. Doctors were grateful to Lynn as the song introduced the availability of the pill to women living in rural areas. Many country stations pulled the song from their playlists, and it stalled at #5. But controversy breeds curiosity and curiosity boosts record sales, so the song became Lynn's highest-charting single on the pop chart at #70. The singer couldn't understand what the fuss was all about. She explained: "I didn't

I didn't have the money to take it when they put it out, but I couldn't understand why they were raising such a fuss over taking the pill." Although it was written by a team of songwriters, Lorene Allen, Don McHan, and T. D. Bayless, Lynn could certainly relate to the narrator who is sick of having babies left and right and is "makin' up for all those years, since I've got the pill." By the time she was 19, Lynn had three children and would give birth to three more, including a set of twins, just as the pill was gaining traction by 1964. She told People magazine: "If I'd had the pill back when I was havin' babies I'd have taken 'em like popcorn. The pill is good for people. I wouldn't trade my kids for anyones. But I wouldn't necessarily have had six and I sure would have spaced 'em better." Unbeknownst to Lynn at the time, she was almost banned from singing this at the Grand Ole Opry. She recalled in an interview with Playgirl Magazine: "You know I sung it three times at the Grand Ole Opry one night, and I found out a week later that the Grand Ole Opry had a three-hour meeting, and they weren't going to let me [sing it] … If they hadn't let me sing the song, I'd have told them to shove the Grand Ole Opry!" Lynn performed this on Dolly Parton's variety show, Dolly, in 1988, and on Roseanne Barr's talk show, The Roseanne Show, in 1998. This is the first popular English-language song about birth control. "This old maternity dress I've got is going in the garbage/The clothes I'm wearing from now on won't take up so much yardage/ Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills/Yeah, I'm making up for all those years since I've got the pill"

Caramelised Banana French Toast Bake
INGREDIENTS
• 10 slices white sandwich bread • 8 eggs • 2/3 cup caster sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 1/3 cups milk cup cream and 2 bananas in a food processor. Process until smooth. Pour banana mixture over bread in pan. Stand for 15 minutes.
• 300ml pure cream • 6 small bananas • 60g butter
• Step 3 - Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden and set.
• 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
METHOD
• Step 1 - Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan-forced. Grease a 5cmdeep, 20cm x 28cm (base) 25cm x 32cm (top) roasting pan.
• Step 4- Meanwhile, slice remaining bananas lengthways. Melt butter and brown sugar in a large frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook for 2 minutes or until melted and smooth. Add remaining cream. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium. Add banana and pecans. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes or until sauce is slightly thickened and banana is tender.

best of times, and this time was not the best. After the Surprize crew managed one transfer, they battled the surf back to their ship, loaded the next group, then headed back to shore. This time the heavy surf capsized the boat. Those onshore managed to drag some survivors onto land, then watched on helplessly as seven females thrashed about in the waves and disappeared. The boat was smashed to pieces. Any attempt to board by the now deeply disappointed stranded sailors was abandoned. It would be another six arduous months before they would be rescued. Justina had laid off the island to wait for Surprize to complete her offloading and collection of passengers. With the fate of Sirius now known by the Captain of Justina and having just observed the tragic fate of convicts in the surf, he decided to abandon the delivery of stores and sailed off to China to sell the supplies, leaving the Norfolk Island colony in a dire situation. There was one bright spot. The captain of Surprize was able to tell a relieved Phillip that his friend and crew of Sirius were safe on land if a little hungry. On 19th September, Supply, laden with food stores, returned to Sydney from Batavia. Her captain had also chartered a Dutch vessel, Waaksamheyd, to follow with more stores. Finally, the people of Sydney Town were able to live on a full ration.

n July 1790, as Sydney began to recover, Norfolk Island was in the grip of starvation. Phillip, with no knowledge of the conditions on the Island, and having a deep concern over the fate of Sirius and her crew, knew he needed to send help to Norfolk. He commandeered Surprize, a convict transport from the second fleet, to transfer convicts and supplies to the Island. He contracted Justina, the store ship, to accompany her with more supplies. On 31st July, Surprize sailed out of Sydney Harbour with 149 women and their children, the great majority of them still unspoken for and many pregnant. As Surprize anchored off Norfolk, the stranded sailors from the wrecked Sirius breathed a sigh of relief. At last, after five long months, they would be on their way back to Sydney. The cheerful sailors collected their personal belongings and gathered at the shore waiting to be ferried to Surprize. Landing on Norfolk Island was a hazardous task at the

On 21st February Supply finally brought a much-relieved Captain Hunter and his Sirius crew back to Sydney after having been stranded for nearly a year. After being briefed on the loss of Sirius, Phillip ordered Captain John Hunter to return to England aboard Waaksamheyd where he would have to face a courtmartial for the loss of his ship. Phillip despatched a report on his preliminary investigation, which included details of the difficulties of landing on Norfolk Island. Over a year later he was pleased to hear that his good friend John Hunter had been honourably acquitted. On 9th July, Mary Ann, the first convict transport ship of the Third Fleet arrived in Sydney with 141 women convicts and six children on board. Soon afterwards, Phillip Gidley King also arrived back in Sydney from England on HMS Gorgon. Phillip immediately sent him to Norfolk Island to replace Major Robert Ross who had been recalled to England.
REGULAR FEATURES In November, the last ship of the first fleet HMS Supply, finally left Sydney to return to England. Onboard was a live kangaroo to be given to King George as a gift from Phillip. The ship reached Portsmouth the day before the Dutch ship which had left Sydney seven months earlier. On 18th December, after four years in the colonies, Major Robert Ross and his Marine Corps sailed back to England on HMS Gorgon. The soldiers had been replaced by a new marine force, the New South Wales Corps.

On arrival in London, Major Ross expected accolades for his service in NSW. Before his departure four years previously, he was promised that, as an incentive, he would be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given the command of a marine battalion on his return. To his shock, he was instead paraded before a Court Marshall to answer the many charges made by Governor Phillip. Phillip’s report stated that Ross had opposed his schemes for organising the convicts and had refused to allow the officers to help supervise the prisoners. He had criticised Phillip for not building fortifications, while at the same time complaining that his officers had to remain under canvas and later threw difficulties in the way of Phillip's efforts to have barracks built. He had missed no opportunity to embarrass and hinder Phillip, and at one stage had placed five officers under arrest, after a trivial disagreement about the sentence of a court-martial. He had suspended two more, had two others asking to be relieved, and had “the adjutant and quartermaster under his displeasure”. He was found guilty of serious misconduct, demoted to Captain, and posted as a marine’s recruitment officer to the provincial centre of St Albans, outer London. Forgotten and disgraced, he died two years later. As returning ships arrived in England from September 1791 on, many, on landing, contacted British newspapers. Soon details of the horrendous abuse of convicts in the Second Fleet became headline
news. More and more articles were published, detailing the sadistic captains’ actions. One letter published was from William Hill, a captain in the New South Wales Corps who sailed with the Second Fleet. He said that conditions in the slave trade were better than those in the Second Fleet. He wrote about the masters of Neptune and Scarborough, as being cruel men. His letter in part said: “We left the Cape, the twentyninth of April, and anchor'd in this beautiful Harbour the twenty-sixth of June; Wou'd I cou'd draw an eternal Shade over the Remembrance of this miserable Part of our Voyage, miserable - not so much in itself, as render'd so by the Villiany, oppression and shameful Peculation of the masters of the Transports. - The Bark I was on board of, was indeed, unfit, from her make & size, to be sent to so great a Distance; if it blew but a trifling Gale, she was Lost in the Waters; of which she shipp'd so much, that from the Cape, the unhappy Wretches, the Convicts, were considerably above their waists in Water; and the men of my Company, whose Births were not so far forward, were nearly up to their middles; in this situation they were obliged, for the safety of the Ship, to be pen 'd down; but when the Gales abated, no means were used to purify the air by Fumigations, no vinegar was applied, to rectify the nauseous steams, issuing from their miserable Dungeons; The more they can withhold from the unhappy wretches, the more provisions they have to dispose of on a foreign market, and the earlier in the voyage they die the longer they can draw the deceased’s allowance for themselves; for I fear few of them are honest enough to make a just return of the dates of their deaths to their employers.” Humanity shudders to think that of nine hundred male Convicts embark'd in this Fleet, three Hundred and seventy are already Dead, & four hundred & fifty are landed sick, and so emaciated and helpless, that very few, or any of them, can be saved by care or medecine; so that sooner it pleases God to remove them, the Better it will be for this Colony; which is not in a situation to bear any Burthen; as I imagine the Medicine Chest to be nearly
exhausted and Provisions are a scarce“ . Contract payment wasn’t dependent on how many people reached Australia alive, instead, the contractor was paid for the number of people who boarded the ships in Britain. There was absolutely no incentive for the contractors to treat the prisoners with care. There was also a provision allowing contractors to sell any leftover stores at the end of the voyage. This saw the ruthless captains reportedly withhold food from the prisoners, which they later sold “for a killing” to those struggling in the colony of NSW. As a result of Phillip’s report and the widespread public outrage, Neptune’s captain Donald Trail, along with his chief mate William Ellington, were brought to trial at the Old Bailey. Trail was a former navy master who had commanded a slave ship and was described by many as a sadist. The trial was initially about unpaid wages for some of the seamen on the voyage, but the trial quickly turned to the brutal treatment of the convicts. Many witnesses attested to the abhorrent conditions imposed on convicts. Incredibly, Trail and Ellington were acquitted. After the trial, the government defended them when the issue was raised in parliament. By that stage, the international scene was lurching towards war with revolutionary France occupying all press interest, and the Second Fleet atrocities faded into the background. Astoundingly, the same contractors were employed for the Third Fleet. But the lessons learned from the public outrage and Phillip’s scathing reports ensured that there were changes made to the contracts. Payments would be made for the numbers that were safely delivered. Incentives were also included if the convicts arrived in a fit condition to start work immediately. At least the Second Fleet deaths had one positive effect. As 1792 began, Phillip, for the first New Year’s Day since his arrival, felt optimistic about the future of his colony. Sydney Town was well-established, though it still remained an unplanned huddle of wooden huts and tents. The whaling
industry was booming, ships were visiting Sydney to trade, and convicts whose sentences had expired were taking up farming. John Macarthur and other officers were importing sheep and beginning to grow wool. The colony was still very short of skilled farmers, craftsmen, and tradesmen, and the convicts continued to work well, though mainly employed in growing their own food. Phillip’s health was deteriorating, as he suffered from the effects of poor diet and exhaustion. Nevertheless, he enjoyed his first year free of famine and an uncooperative military. He was pleased when he received permission to leave. On 11th December 1792, he sailed away in the ship Atlantic, taking with him many specimens of plants and animals, as well as two aboriginal men, Bennelong and Yemmerrawanne. Both became attractions in London society. Sailing out of the heads Phillip would have reflected on the past five years. The European population of NSW at his departure was 4,221, of whom 3,099 were convicts. The early years of the colony had been years of struggle and hardship, but the worst was over, and there had been no further famines. Had it not been for the tenacity, courage and leadership skills demonstrated by Phillip, it was likely that the colonisation of NSW would have been abandoned, with the likelihood that it would have been the French who would have quickly moved in. Phillip arrived in London, in May 1793. He tendered his formal resignation and was granted a pension of £500 a year. He settled in Bath to “take the waters” as a cure for his failing health. Phillip, whose first wife, Margaret, had died in 1792, married Isabella Whitehead in 1794 and lived for a time in Bath before returning to sea. In 1805, aged 67, he retired from the Navy with the rank of Admiral of the Blue and spent most of the rest of his life in Bath at 19 Bennett Street, where he died aged 75 in 1814. He is buried in St Nicholas Church, Bathampton, where his gravestone is set into the floor immediately inside the church. Issue 161 Mar 11, 2022 41

THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT PEOPLE AND EVENTS THAT TOOK BANKSIA BEACH FROM ISOLATION TO A BIG NEW SUBURB. THE NAME BANKSIA RELATES TO JOSEPH BANKS, A YOUNG BOTANIST WHO SAILED WITH CAPTAIN COOK ON HIS JOURNEY OF EXPLORATION IN 1770. Although well off the coast sailing past here, street names include Solander, Banks assistant, Elizabeth Batts, Cooks wife who lived to the age of 94, and Endeavour, their ship. The first explorer Matthew Flinders repaired his sloop Norfolk at White Patch in 1799 and camped with the aboriginal inhabitants. Eighty years later few remained, and they were placed in a government reserve at White Patch, where they had a ceremonial Bora Ring, later destroyed by developers. About 1898 the government gazetted land there for a new settlement to be called the Town Of Bribie. However, it did not eventuate as a private tug company built a jetty at Bongaree in 1912, running steamships from Brisbane, leaving Banksia Beach very isolated. The only person to come to Banksia Beach in the 1890s was Gustav Gux, a Prussian migrant who lived on the Caboolture River, who came to catch many big mud crabs, in what we now call Dux Creek. In 1913 the whole Banksia Beach area was acquired by Harry Wright, Secretary of the Licensed Victuallers Association in Brisbane. He must have seen the potential business opportunity and growth for Bribie and built a house named “Mountain View”, south of Wrights creek which was later named

for him. He sold this large parcel of land to the Landells family in 1925, who had been missionaries in Samoa. In a letter to their son at the time, they told proudly told him they “had acquired the largest
piece of freehold land on Bribie Island.” The land was between Dux Creek and Wrights Creek but proved totally unproductive and largely swamp. They eventually sold it in 1933 for 260 Pounds (A$ 490) which was less than they had paid for it. This extensive area is now Pacific Harbour canal development.

away shearing, while Phyllis remained isolated in their waterfront cottage, growing her own food and keeping Dingos away from their cattle grazing over hundreds of acres. Mango trees she planted can still be seen along the foreshore at Banksia beach. In the early 1970s, Ted Howard bought land from Sunderland for a residential subdivision around the landlocked Solander Lake. A road was constructed from Bellara, all around the extensive Dux Creek, to the foreshore at Banksia beach, and residential land was offered for sale. The aerial photos show the road, Sunderland Drive, built to Banksia Beach in 1979. The extensive lake and watercourse land progressively became the major residential canal and golf course development known as Pacific Harbour, with the main canal entrance cut through to Dux Creek. An early resident of the new Banksia Beach subdivision

They sold to Lavinia Lindsay, a lady who lived next door to Jimmy-no-legs Hagan at Bongaree. She bought the property during the Depression to support her family by grazing cattle, growing vegetables and fishing. Her granddaughter recently contacted us with Photos and her fascinating life story. The only access to Banksia beach all this time was by boat. The next residents of Banksia Beach were Harry and Phyllis Sunderland who came in 1945. Harry was a shearer who spent many months

was Colin and Bry Fischer who bought 33 Solander Esplanade in 1979 for $16,000 and built
Glasshouse Mountains, replica models. The area was named Col Fisher Park in his honour, and prior to his death in 2013 at the age of 94, his book of memories was launched by Bry at the Historical Society. Banksia beach had extensive wildflowers and was home to many local and migratory birds, and Kakadu Wading Bird Reserve at the mouth of Dux Creek reflects this. Much natural flora and fauna have been

Reed-Warblers are
reasonably common birds on Bribie Island living mainly in reeds at the edge of waterways. They are small Old-World Warblers (sometimes referred to as true warblers) around 17 cm in length and weighing only 12-23 g. They are slim passerines with olive-brown backs, creamy underparts, tawny rumps and are not streaked like Grassbirds or Cisticolas. Inside their mouths is yellow and obvious when warbling amongst the reeds. Small spiky crests on their heads are sometimes visible. They are hard to spot as they tend to remain mostly hidden but their loud tuneful call resembling that of the Brown Honeyeater will betray their presence if they are about. When perched or moving about they cling to the reed stems. Both males and females are similar in appearance. They are likely to be found throughout most of Australia where there are reed beds in fresh or brackish waters. Sometimes they appear in clumps of lantana and bamboo. Some populations seem to be sedentary but mostly they are migratory, moving for fresh food or south in the summer to breed. More is yet to be learnt about their migratory habits, particularly of those in the north. Australian ReedWarblers are also residents of PNG and islands across the Indian Ocean to South Africa.

Food is obtained mostly from the ground amongst the reeds and consists mainly of insects, but sometimes seeds and molluscs are added to the menu. Usually, they forage singly but sometimes form pairs. Breeding takes place usually from September to February. Males arrive early to the site to establish their territory. During the courtship, males are extra noisy and warble to impress the females. They build flimsy nests which are believed to be part of the mate selection process. Reed-Warblers are monogamous for one season and probably select a new mate the following year. Well hidden, cup-shaped nests of grass and reeds are built by both parents 1 m or less above the water supported by 3-4 reed stems and attached cleverly with fibres tied around reed stems. Nests are deep and narrow towards the opening at the top, so eggs and babies don’t fall out during strong winds. 3-4 spotted bluish-brown blotched eggs are laid and incubated by the female for 14-15 days. Both parents feed the young birds. After 14-16 days the young leave the nests but continue to be fed by the parents till around 28 days. 44

The scientific name Acrocephalus meaning “Topmost Head” in Greek refers to their short spiky crest. Australis in Latin means “Southern”. Australian Reed-Warblers have only about 58% nesting success when breeding. Some of their threats are from predators when nesting and burning and human interference of their habitat. Their conservation status is listed as least concern.
MAGPIES ARE FAMED FOR THEIR INTELLIGENCE AND NOW A “FAILED” EXPERIMENT BY RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SUNSHINE COAST HAS SHOWN JUST HOW CLEVER AND COLLABORATIVE THE AUSTRALIAN SONGBIRD REALLY IS.

small group of feathered masterminds foiled a project trialling a novel harness design, which allowed GPS tracking devices to be strapped to the backs of magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen), by helping each other quickly remove the devices. Dr Potvin said the way the magpies teamed up to escape from the harnesses was unexpected. “This shows high levels of cognitive ability and also cooperation – helping others seemingly without getting a reward,” she said. “This kind of ‘rescue’ behaviour has only been documented in a handful of birds and is a remarkable indication of tight social structures and relationships.” Mr Crampton, who helped conduct the study as part of his honours research, said that despite previous tests demonstrating the strength and durability of the harness, the birds managed to remove the devices within minutes to hours of the initial fitting. “To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the removal of GPS trackers within members of the same species and should be considered when planning future tracking studies, especially on highly social species, such as magpies,” he said. The pilot study involved five birds and got off to a good start, with the researchers initially hopeful it could be replicated on a larger scale. “We first trained the magpies

The idea was for the harnessed birds to later return to the feeding station, where a magnet would release the GPS device without the need to catch them again. “Of course, every time you put a tracker on a bird, it takes a bit of getting used to, so the magpies were adjusting and turning their heads to try to grab it,” Dr Potvin said. “But the harness isn’t accessible by the birds. Well, by themselves. We didn’t count on them asking for help from each other.” Within the hour of the last tracker being placed on a bird, the researchers witnessed an adult female pecking at the harness of a juvenile, eventually managing to release it. “This is quite a feat because there is only one weak point on the harness, which is where it would have been released by the magnet,” Dr Potvin said. A few days later, none of the five birds, even the dominant male, still had their harness on. The researchers said the behaviour demonstrated both cooperation and a moderate level of problemsolving, providing potential further evidence of the cognitive abilities of this species.

The Bribie Island Croquet Club recently held its Annual General Meeting. Well not in the Clubhouse due to Covid restrictions, but outside under the trees. The weather was kind, and a new committee was elected. Jan Rees was elected to be President taking over from Dick Byres who had been president for 8 very successful years –Difficult shoes to fill, but Jan is the person to do just that. Dick has done an amazing job over that time to develop Bribie Croquet Club into one of the best in Queensland. New sheds, new equipment, coaching members to be the best they can. He has been heavily involved with the Sunshine Coast Region Croquet committee and the Croquet Association of Queensland. He obtained grants which helped to develop such things as a fifth croquet court. Brooke Savage and Terry Young have also been very supportive of the club and Dick thanked them for their help over the years. To thank Dick on behalf of the club he was presented with a collage of photographs representing some of his achievements and an engraved glass plaque. After the presentation club members enjoyed drinks and finger food beautifully prepared by two of our members. So, who are the new committee you may ask? Jan Rees - President Maggie Lawson – Vice president, Lyn Beh – Treasurer, Joan Gleeson – Secretary, Gwen Connelly, Ian McCasker, Sue Green general members. Directions
Carefully lift the cheese from the parchment paper and add to a lightly greased muffin tin. Using your hands, mold the cheese inside each cup and set aside to cool completely. Meanwhile, grease a frying pan with olive oil and place over low heat. Sauté minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add ground beef and sprinkle with cumin powder, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook ground beef over medium heat for 15 minutes or until beef is browned and cooked through.
Preheat the oven to 190c and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Some dogs are very strong and determined to pull when out walking. No matter how many times you stop walking or changing directions it’s to no avail. There is equipment that stops dogs from pulling and safe and gentle for your dog as well. These are body harnesses that have a front attachment. It redistributes weight to help prevent pulling. The way it works is because the dog’s centre of gravity is located at the chest. The harness sits behind the front legs and loops around the chest, with a leash ring at the front. It is totally safe and very comfortable for the dog and comes in all sizes from petite to giant. There is other equipment that should be avoided such as head

collars, check or prong/pinch collars. The way these collars work is if the dog pulls it causes pain and discomfort. They do work because when the dog pulls, he is being choked. The problem with this is the dog may associate being choked with something in the environment such as other dogs or children. Dogs then can become frightened or even aggressive. Most dogs find head collars very uncomfortable and have to be trained to accept them. Head collars can jerk a dog’s head to the side, which can cause injury. Front attached body harnesses are the easiest and dog friendly way of stopping a dog from pulling.

PLAY WITH PURPOSE
When petting and playing with your dog, especially when they are young, intentionally play with their feet, ears, and mouth. By doing things like touching their feet, toes and nails during positive play experience, you will desensitize them to being touched in these areas when it’s time for nail trims. Looking in their ears and mouth and getting them used to being handled in this way will make it much easier for your vet to examine your dog when they go in for check-ups. This will make your vet’s job easier, your pup will be less stressed during their exam, and your vet will be more likely to catch any abnormalities in the event that there is something wrong with your dog.

If your dog or puppy eats their meals very quickly they increase their risk of having stomach issues or upsets that may lead to vomiting. Slowing down your dog’s eating is good for their digestive health and can be done easily. One option is to buy a puzzle feeder from a pet store or online. Alternatively, a cheap easy solution is just to put a large tennis ball in their bowl. Both the ball
and puzzle toy will work similarly making your dog have to work around the inedible obstacle to eat their meal.
BONDING BE A FRIEND TO YOUR DOG Dogs need love and affection to thrive. Make sure they’re spending plenty of time inside with you and your family. Give them attention, treats, and play games with them.
Hang out with them while they eat Dogs are by nature pack animals and you’re their pack. Stay near them when they eat and make this an ongoing communal act. Picky eaters might also show more interest in their food when they see you take an interest.
HAVE PATIENCE WITH THEM
It can be challenging when your dog acts out or isn’t picking up on a new training technique, but with some grace and patience, they’ll be more likely to continue trying. If you’re feeling frustrated, take a break from training and consider consulting your vet or local training professional. BRIBIE WOODIES Start The Year

E
ach year the Bribie Woodies commit to donating sums of money raised each year to a worthy local cause. These amounts of money come from Bunnings Sausage sizzles, open days market sales, projects, and other activities. We started the year by donating $3,000 to the East Pumicestone Community Support Association following an address by Greg Rollason at our January General Meeting. This group runs the monthly Munch Markets to raise funds for their work in supporting homeless people and others in need of emergency accommodation. Then at the February general meeting, Bronwyn Sheehan from the Pyjama Foundation addressed the Woodies about the work done by them. This organisation is a not-for-profit organisation that supports the educational outcomes of children in the foster care system. They recruit volunteers, known as Pyjama Angels, who spend one hour a week visiting their pyjama child, playing educational games, reading aloud and most importantly having fun. The February meeting voted to donate $2,000 to their cause. And early in January the Woodies supplied all the cut and dressed wood, to a Toc House project. The Bribie and District Woodcrafters recently supported Toc H Bribie Island with the provision of material for two outdoor tables and eight bench seats, now located in the garden setting of
Coungeau House at Bongaree. John Tunks from the Woodies designed, milled, and finished the timber slabs which were then assembled by the Youth Development Foundation lads undertaking training in construction at Coungeau House. Christine expressed thanks to the Bribie Woodies and YDF for their support in providing such a solid outdoor setting that will provide users of Coungeau House an area to sit and enjoy a coffee for many years to come... And if all that is not enough a group of Woodie's members produced 100 specially labelled wooden pens to distribute to the front-line staff in the Covid intensive care wards and other front-line staff. The pens will be presented to these people in a
presentation box provided by Ali King, State member for Pumicestone. It is important that they know we appreciate the heavy and stressful workload they have been experiencing during the Covid crisis. President Kim Bowers said that “The commitment of the Woodies in supporting local causes shows that our members are about more than just fashioning wooden objects, but that they care about, and support the community in which we all live. WHITE VINEGAR
Among all its home-cleaning benefits, white vinegar can absorb and remove kitchen odours. To do this, simply place a bowl filled with white vinegar in your room. For very stubborn odours, you can boil the white vinegar in a saucepan without a lid. Its vapours will make bad odours disappear. White vinegar is also effective in removing odours in a dishwasher. To do this, fill the rinse aid container with white vinegar and run your dishwasher empty.
BAKING SODA
Baking soda can help you fight kitchen odours, especially those from garbage cans. Sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom of the trash can and put your trash bag on top. This miracle product also helps remove refrigerator odours if you place it in a cup in the middle of this appliance.
LEMON
Lemon is very effective in eliminating cooking odours. All you need to do is bring lemon juice, water, and a few cloves to a boil. By placing this citrus fruit, on which you will have planted 3 or 4 cloves, in your refrigerator, you will also easily get rid of the bad smells that emanate from it. Lemon also could deodorize your microwave by mixing its juice with water that you heat for 40 seconds in the microwave.
ESSENTIAL OIL OF LAVENDER OR EUCALYPTUS
Another tip with a simple and easyto-reach product to eliminate kitchen odours: no longer throw away your coffee grounds but, in the event of bad odours coming from your sink, put some inside and run some hot water above. Coffee grounds have a stripping power that helps remove bad smells from residue. It also removes stubborn odours from your refrigerator. Just put coffee grounds in a cup and change it once a week.
A very simple gesture can remove kitchen odours with essential oil of lavender or eucalyptus: put a few drops of this essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in a small cup in your kitchen. Not only do these essential oils chase away bad kitchen odours, but Don’t throw away your orange peels. they discreetly perfume the room. If bad odours persist in your kitchen, use them. Put the orange peels in an oven and heat them on medium heat for a few minutes. Your cooking odours will have disappeared, leaving behind a sweet citrus scent.

Thyme also helps neutralize lingering cooking odours. For it to act in this direction, boil 500 ml of water with the addition of 2 tablespoons of thyme. Miracle, odours disappear with this grandmother trick.
CINNAMON
A single stick of cinnamon will help eliminate the fishy smell in the kitchen, especially. Immerse the cinnamon in a small saucepan of water and heat this mixture on the cooktop. An ideal solution to get rid of those stubborn smells.

ue to Covid restrictions, February was the Bribie Island Garden Club’s first meeting of 2022, and 62 members braved the rain to join us at the RSL Bribie Island A great big thank you to Busy Fingers who donated to the Club a much-needed sound system. Having a hands-free headset will make it easier for our speakers to speak and display the items they bring. The Bribie Island community is just so lucky to have Busy Fingers Our State Member Ali King presented the Club with a gift basket. We raffled it at our February meeting and Maureen Potter was the lucky winner. Our speaker was Jill from Searles, and she was very amusing. Jill came bearing gifts and gave us great
Garden Club
advice on what to do with our gardens after all this rain. Jill not only handed out gifts on the day but next month the rest of her gifts will be part of our monthly raffles.
Due to the huge amount of rain, our judging table was small, but our members still managed to display some beautiful plants and produce. It is great when your cherished bloom or vegetable manages to win points for the end of year prizes. Everyone enjoyed viewing the judging table at morning tea and mawny conversations were had regarding the plants. We also held 2 ‘Come and Share’ Days in February. The Come and Share days are very popular, we bring a plate of food, cuttings, and our excess plants. We then spend the next few hours catching up with old friends and making new ones. The one thing we all have in common is our love of plants. Our AGM for 2022 will be held at the March meeting. This will be held as usual on the fourth Wednesday of the Month with a start time of 9.30 am.

THE CABOOLTURE ORCHID SOCIETY INC ARE WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH BPW TO PUT ON A PLANT SPECTACULAR AS PART OF THE BPW CABOOLTURE AND SURROUNDS BUSINESS SHOWCASE AND EVENTS. The planning for this started last year and the idea was presented to us at a Terry Young Federal Members Vision Builders event.

Crew night training Wednesday 23rd February 2022 in Bribie 2 and Jonkers Bribie 3, the crews dodged the weather for most of the night but at 8.30pm they got a huge downpour.
Friday 18th Feb 2022 - A little trip out today in great conditions for the on-call crew a vessel with alternator issues safely taken back home to Pacific harbour.
BUSY WEDNESDAY Wednesday 2nd February 2022 - The first assist was a small runabout near Donnybrook. As the tow started you could see the storm was heading over Mission Point. Second job was attending to a drifting cruiser at Turner's Camp, followed by an unmanned small half cabin whose anchor line had broken and was taken and secured to the MSQ mooring.

Monday 21st Feb 2022 - Bribie 1 and crew took 5 lovely nurses and all their medical gear over to Tangalooma to conduct vaccinations for staff and guests they will stay overnight, and Bribie 1 will pick them up at midday tomorrow. Ricky Dewsnap CEO of Tower Force dropped into VMR Bribie’s Base to make sure that all the recent upgrades to the Radio Tower which included two new top sections, new antennas and cabling were all working well. Commodore Liz Radajewski and Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe took the opportunity to present Ricky with a framed series of photographs of his team working on the recent upgrades. Commodore Liz said that the work done by Ricky and his team will ensure that we are in the best position with respect to communications to fulfill our primary role of “Saving Lives.”

Sat 26th Feb 2022 - Bribie 1 has just left the Caboolture River now heading across Moreton Bay it has been one hell of a day for this crew thanks guys.
WHITE PATCH CUT OFF VMR Bribie One skippered by Coxswain Jim Brown ferried the Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council Peter Flannery and Member for Pumicestone Ali King MP along with other council officials, local police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Personnel to White Patch which was cut off during the floods, to assess the damage to local infrastructure and what needs to be done as well as taking some much needed food supplies for locals. This was a joint operation with our SES colleagues with whom we work closely for the benefit of the local community. Over the weekend VMR Bribie‘s Rescue vessels were involved in numerous calls for help with assisting pumping out of vessel. Medivacs with
FISHING, BOATING AND ADVENTURES patients that needed to be transported to Hospital urgently and transporting emergency medical supplies to the Island, transporting an emergency electrician required at Beachmere to fix the water supply pumps and calls for help with grounded vessels, and helping to man the evacuation centre on Bribie. A big Thank You to all of our Volunteers for offers of additional help, plus along with our colleagues at the Coast Guard and SES we all have the same aim of keeping our communities safe and saving lives

Hello everyone, I am sure many of you are growing webs between your toes, I am. I have a daughter and son-in-law living on a Catamaran near the bridge. They have reported getting regularly bashed by debris and big logs moving in and out with the tide, not really conducive to safe boating at the moment. Speaking of which, we have been closing the shop early as foot traffic and fishing has been minimal during this round of weather. In my last report it was blowing a gale. ON THE ROAD
GETTING CLOSER W ell with a now cheery complement of travellers not really rested but much improved in temperament we journeyed without further complaint in our now speedy and trusty bus to reach the road border that joined France to Spain.
This was sited in a town named Perpignan at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains; it comprised the usual pre - European Community era border crossing manned on the one side by French police (Le Flic) and on the Spanish side by the Guardia Civil, the paramilitary police organisation who were numerous at the time of our adventure. Generalissimo Franco the Fascist dictator still ruled the Peninsular at this time so things were still run in the 'old way'. The Guardia was armed, and not just with small pistols either; they wore dark coloured military uniforms with black leather 'Tricornio' hats, altogether a pretty intimidating presence. These Guardia men were certainly not your 'helpful' English Bobby types and you were wise to keep out of their way. When seated in your typical Spanish bar you could watch them enter, look around the place, sit and take a drink 68
and maybe cigarettes, but you seldom saw any payment offered or taken. They largely left tourists alone because we were a source of state income and valuable for that but you always felt wary when they were around. We did have a little run-in with them later in the trip but thankfully that situation was resolved. However, one of our party seemed particularly spooked whenever one of the Goons came close to the bus at the border post. You know the scene when someone tries to slide down in a seat to try to disappear. Didn't take too much notice at the time but it created a problem later. With the border crossed without incident, we powered on to Barcelona, the city of Las Ramblas, Gaudi architecture, the Sagrada Familia cathedral plus cheap local champagne, red wine and brandy. We came to know the bubbly and the cheap red quite well later. We frequented a particular local seaside bar. This place seemed to be run on the smell of an oily rag so much so that we would often quickly drink them out of bubbles so we got the idea of telling the barman to mix the bubbles with the cheap red to produce a hybrid we christened "Flying Dog"; so named because we reckoned that if a dog ever

did drink the stuff then the critter would surely be able to fly. Years later when in Australia I discovered the drink called 'Cold Duck' which I'm sure was made using the same formula. When leaving the famed city to head south towards our rented villa we ran into trouble. Now if you look at the pics in the articles that show our Commer bus you will notice that from the side entrance door there is no step to assist entry but on our model, we had a substantial item of this type. It was far more heavily made than the sheet metal van side. Now as we left the city we got a bit lost in the narrow back streets that were lined with parked cars and, you guessed it, this 'stairway to heaven' collided with a parked car. Whoever was driving the bus didn't notice, or so he said and he kept going. It was early evening and the light was poor so maybe there was an excuse but we were seen to do the damage and a motorcycle gave chase. We stopped to see why the cyclist was in pursuit waving madly at us. When the situation was explained some international bonhomie was brought into play. We apologised and offered the details of our insurance to cover the damage costs. This was when our travel
companion, the one who had done the seat slide at the border seemed to lose it. He was against us talking to the guy and insisted that we just give him something that didn't identify us and that we drive off quickly. 'Just get his address and we can sort it when we get home' was his preference. 'Let's go, let's go before the Guardia get here', he raved. It was only much later when we had left the scene that it came out that on a previous trip to Spain this guy had had a run-in with the Black Hats over a matter concerning the dreaded weed and didn't want to face them again. Years later I was given advice which I have rated as being the wisest words ever uttered by a fool. The adviser, who I had no great admiration for spoke the words - 'When in doubt scream and shout, wave your arms and leap about'. He reckoned that if you ever met a performance like our drug fearful passenger was putting on then the performer was on very unsure ground, was well out of their comfort zone or was straight out telling porkies. This advice is given long after the Spanish trip has proved of great value in life ever since.

speeding drivers putting school kids at risk Aussie drivers may need to head back into the classroom to brush up on road safety, as new research from insurer AAMI reveals almost half (46 per cent) admit to speeding because they didn’t notice signs indicating a change in the speed limit. Of those who admit to speeding, over half (56 per cent) claim to only do so by less than 10km/hr over the speed limit.
Australian roads (up 2.9% from 2020) - Of those fatalities, 11 per cent were children under the age of 18 years - 19 pedestrian children were killed on Australian roads last year. It appears that whilst many people know of our existence of us, they are not aware of the reasons for our presence in the community. Crime Stoppers is a partnership between the community volunteer organization Crime Stoppers Qld Limited, the Queensland Police Service, the media and the public. Crime Stoppers Ltd is a registered charity and community organization that provides and promotes anonymous contact mediums for the general public to report information and help that make a difference in stopping, solving, and preventing crime.
The Crime Stoppers program was established in Qld in 1989 and now operates around Australia and all around the world. The key feature is that all information provided may remain anonymous and removes the fear of retaliation or becoming involved in any court proceedings. There are now 32 Area Committees around Qld all run by like-minded volunteers who wish to help protect their community, so whether you are in The Tweed or out in the west of the State or the F.N.Q., you will find an Area Committee near you. Area Committees provide the a tangible link to our local communities and give empowerment to the public to contact Crime Stoppers should
