178 e m o c l e W Dear readers,

Christmas as I feel as if we just had Easter! I have not done any Christmas shopping (yes, again) so I dare say I had better get out of my state of denial and start getting organised! Last year my Christmas tree went up on Christmas Eve and I don’t want to repeat that this year! As you will see in this magazine, we have a lot of Christmas events coming up, we should feel very lucky as a community to have such a wonderful array of things to attend! We also have a fantastic amount of talent in our area, with artists, performers, photographers etc, we have a few in this edition for you to read about! On a more serious note, we have been having a significant rise in crime around the district, as a community, we need to band together and keep an eye out for our neighbours and not turn a blind eye. Our elderly is vulnerable, if you have an elderly neighbour, pop in and check they are ok. Maybe give them your number in case of an emergency. I can only imagine how terrified they would feel with a prowler around their home. This is our wake-up call. It’s time to let these thugs know we are a community that will not tolerate this behaviour

PREVENTIVE

Healthcare

SCREENINGS

for Women by Himanshu Singh

Every woman should take care of her health and regularly go for preventive healthcare screenings. In that way, a woman preserves her health and improves her quality of life. Taking care of your health is crucial because you will have a longer lifespan. The best care you can have for your health is going to preventive examinations. That way, in the event of an illness,

the doctor will be able to react promptly and stop the further spread. In this way, you will avoid consequences that can be long-term, even fatal. While both men and women suffer from common diseases, some of them affect only women. Heart diseases can occur in both women and men, but it is more likely that women will have consequences. At least once a year, every woman should go for regular preventive examinations and routine screenings and talk to the doctor about her health.

Cervical Cancer Screening

The number of women diagnosed with cervical cancer is increasing every year. In most cases, women do not go for regular preventive screenings, and the disease progresses. Most women consult a doctor if they feel any pain or notice changes. Cervical cancer occurs due to the HPV virus, which often passes without symptoms. It means that a woman will not even

know she is suffering from this disease. The role of regular preventive examinations is to stop the disease at its root and prevent further progress. Going for preventive screenings reduces the chance of getting cervical cancer. It is recommended that women aged 25 to 75 go for regular one-year screenings for cervical cancer, even if vaccinated for HPV.

Mammograms

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with a high mortality rate. It is recommended that every woman goes get a mammogram at least once a year. Those having risk factors for getting this disease should do it even more. Also, every woman should do a self-examination of her breasts at home. A mammogram cannot stop or cure breast cancer, but it detects this disease at an early stage. If this disease is detected at the very beginning, there are great chances of a cure.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Women should go for regular preventive examinations and mammograms to protect their health. It is advised for women over 50 years old. If you notice any changes in your breasts, do not hesitate to contact your doctor.

Screenings for sexual and reproductive health

Reproductive and sexual health is important for every woman. It is a guarantee for the possibility of pregnancy and giving birth to children. To maintain reproductive and sexual health, every woman must regularly visit a gynaecologist. It is recommended that every woman does this at least once a year, and even more often if necessary. Women must get vaccinated for HPV, have regular screenings for cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia, Pap smears, and pelvic exams.

Blood Pressure Screening

Every woman must have the habit of checking her blood pressure at least once a year. Even if you are in good shape and lead a healthy life, you should do blood pressure screenings. A blood pressure test can also be a routine part of a doctor’s examination. In case it is discovered that you have high blood pressure, the doctor will advise you to do screenings. It is important to regularly check blood pressure because it can lead to the appearance of many other diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, heart attack, and many other health problems.

Gestational diabetes screening

Gestational diabetes, one of the types of diabetes, is diagnosed during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes can cause many complications and put both the pregnant woman and the baby at risk.

Working on your core strength Hi everyone, let us discuss core strength and ways to help you improve yours with some exercises!! Having core strength is important for the protection of your back, which is one of the biggest health complaints most people have. A good core strength helps to take the strain off your back which assists in lifting, moving etc. To start, we always take our four big yoga breaths to prepare and increase our oxygen levels. For the first one, start by lying flat on your belly and push up with your hands under your shoulders, fingers spread. You can either be on your knees or up on your toes depending on your strength. Now hold this position for one minute using your

Twisted Willow Yoga

Now sit comfortably taking in four deep yoga breaths to re-establish your oxygen and lay on your back with your legs up straight towards the ceiling. Now slowly lower your legs to the floor, breathing deeply again. Repeat this ten times, if possible, if not, as many as you can. When you have finished, bring your knees to your chest, and give yourself a hug, stretching your back out. Finish with four deep yoga breaths. Try to do these exercises every day to improve your core strength, you won’t regret it and you will feel better for making the effort! Always remember, it only takes a little movement each day to help maintain and build our bodies, which we all take a little for granted.

ACUPUNCTURE & CANCER CARE

Cancer is a diagnosis that no one wants to hear. It can throw you into a rollercoaster of overwhelming feelings and fears. If you or a loved one is facing cancer it is important to note that there are options available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life while you are undergoing treatment. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of conditions. It is commonly used to manage cancer-related symptoms, treat side effects induced by anticancer therapies, and boost white blood cell and natural killer cell activity in the immune system. Commonly treated symptoms include: • Cancer pain • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and other symptoms that affect a patient’s quality of life, including: • Anxiety • Depression • Insomnia • Poor appetite • Fatigue • Dry mouth • Hot flushes • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation and diarrhoea.

ACUPUNCTURE & CANCER PAIN

Pain in cancer patients and survivors is very common and can be caused by the cancer itself invading organs, soft tissues (nerves and blood vessels) or bones, or the treatments for cancer, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormones and surgery. Multiple sites may be affected and multiple mechanisms are at 12

play including inflammatory, neuropathic, ischemic (restricted or reduced blood circulation) and compression pain. Bone pain due to metastatic cancer is often particularly severe, unremitting and poorly controlled. Patients with bone pain often require high doses of painkillers, which are often associated with undesirable side-effects. Moderate to severe pain is experienced by 40% of individuals with early or intermediate stage cancer and 90% of individuals with advanced cancer. It is estimated that up to 70% of all patients with cancer pain do not receive adequate pain relief, diminishing their quality of life in terms of both physical and psychological well being. Studies have shown that acupuncture can significantly reduce cancer-related pain, particularly malignancy related pain and post-surgery pain. A 2016 systematic review that evaluated the effects of acupuncture reported significant relief, and recommended that acupuncture be included as part of a multimodal approach in treating cancer. Some conventional medicine hospitals, such as the Mater Hospital in Sydney, in fact offer an oncology acupuncture program where acupuncture is provided alongside conventional cancer treatment to support recovery and minimise side-effects, as well as support mental well being, improve physical and emotional resilience, and manage pain. Acupuncture practitioners take a holistic approach to cancer care. This means that not only will your symptoms be considered, but your lifestyle, emotional state, and overall health. Your whole being will be taken into account, not just the cancer.

Mango Hill residents put their best bras forward for Breast Cancer Awareness

Over 20 residents, and Seasons staff members, from Seasons Living Mango Hill hosted a fundraising afternoon tea for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a ‘best-decorated bra competition’. Dressed in pink, the residents from the community had an ambitious goal of raising

$200 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation at the afternoon tea, which was held on Tuesday 18th October. They exceeded their goal, raising over $600. “Sadly, a number of our residents have been affected by breast cancer, so it’s a charity close to many of the women and men’s hearts from our community,” Anna Garrood, Lifestyle Coordinator,

said. “The bra decorating competition was a good bonding experience for us all to share stories of the impact cancer has had in our lives, and it helps that we were able to share a few giggles along the way.” “It’s been a wonderful event and we are really happy with the outcome of the fundraiser for this incredibly worthy foundation,” agreed Bernie

Hatton, Community Manager. Seasons Mango Hill is home to 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom luxury, independent seniors living apartments, with 24/7 onsite care available. By Heenam Kim

Past-Life Regression Hypnotherapy; Quantum Healing

I don’t know how to begin the

story as even I am in the midst of experiencing this phenomenon. I am sometimes hesitant to talk about it because our conditioned logical left-brained world makes it hard to grasp the experiences I am having. However I find the sessions with clients absolutely fascinating. I still can’t believe what I hear when the clients were under the hypnotic, theta brain wave state. Theta state is a state of being in deepest relaxation; the brain waves are slowed down at a frequency of 4-8 cycles per second. It is the first state of the phase when we dream, it’s like half awake and half asleep, a moment between asleep and awake. When we dream, our logic, the reasoning mind doesn’t work. This hypnotherapy is similar in a way that our left-brain needs to be quiet then the right brain is going to take over the experience.

Dr Brian Weiss is a high profile psychiatrist, hypnotherapist and author who specializes in past life regression. In a series of bestselling books, Dr. Weiss has recommended hypnosis for patients, in order to overcome phobias. These phobias go back to experiences from previous lives. By going back to those experiences through hypnosis, the patient confronts his/her fears and ultimately becomes desensitized to the original fears.

if one died by drowning, they may suffer from fear of water and consequently sometimes they suffer from the related diseases. When people died from stomach injury they often suffer from digestive issues. Some people recall their past life with intense emotions, some recall the stories like their conscious mind is observing the situation.

Experiencing the past life is the pathway in order to connect with their higher-self/super conscious mind. This state can be also accessed by deep meditation. In some aspect I don’t want to say hypnosis - it’s more like people are reaching deepest relaxation state. The usual questions I ask during the session are how many times has he/she been reincarnated as human. How many spiritual guides they have and the relationships between their spiritual guides and themselves. During one of the sessions, my client went back to 30,000 years ago, and she mentioned that I was there too. I was somewhat confused, I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be there 30,000 years ago with her. Apparently I was her mother in that life and I was kicking her out from our tribe, because she was raped by a man from the different tribe and was carrying his baby. So she had to live with them. Since that incidence I often ask my clients whether we have known each other in the past life. It’s interesting that I sometimes had past life together with the clients who I never met or known before.

The session takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on the client’s issues and situation. The interview time will take one to one and half hours. functions of the body. EFT alone is very effective tool to heal your body and emotions. During EFT session I usually ask a client for the most traumatic experience they have had since birth to now that they can recall, so that we can cancel out traumas and physical pain. Whatever happened in your life will stay in your memory but it doesn’t have to affect your emotions. So this process is detaching your emotions to the situation, after EFT session it would be like you watched a movie. Then the hypnotherapy session begins, about 30 minutes to 45 minutes of past life experience and another half to 45 minutes talking to your super conscious mind or higher self. The healing happens during this time as required. Most people who can visualize images can go under

easily but for some, if they struggle to visualize simple images they may find difficult to reach deepest state of mind. The session is always recorded and is given to the clients so they can listen to the session again. It is advised to listen more than once; usually there is heaps of delightful information for you to realize and learn from it.

Well, the lack of it really. We used to talk about romance, movies, our sex lives, other people’s sex lives, our babies, our disappointing husbands, and did I mention … our sex lives. Ah, the good old days. Now it’s bone density and weight-bearing exercises. It seems as we get older, life becomes a series of losses. Hair, muscle, memory … and bone density. So far, I’ve steadfastly refused to

resilience on

Bribie Island

The community of Bribie Island QLD in Longman is now better prepared for emergencies and natural disasters following the installation of a backup NBN Sky Muster satellite service under the Australian Government’s Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) program at Bribie Island Recreation Hall. 16

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Australian Government is protecting communities through the STAND program by investing in improved connectivity for emergency services depots and evacuation centres, improved telecommunications resilience under the Mobile Network Hardening Program (MNHP), and portable communications facilities across the country. All of these measures will help to save lives and reduce the impact of natural disasters on the community. The satellite services being deployed at emergency service depots and community evacuation centres across the country will provide backup and alternative communications facilities. These projects will help ensure communities such as those on Bribie Island can continue to access emergency information and remain connected to friends and family through NBN’s Sky Muster satellite service during times of disaster when land-based networks are damaged or offline. STAND-funded assets have proven to be effective in supporting local communities during natural disasters, including the 2022 East Coast Floods in New South Wales and Queensland, the December 2021 and January 2022 Western Australia bushfires, Cyclone Seroja, the June 2021 Victorian and Ingham, Queensland floods. The Australian Government is also encouraging people to be prepared for natural disasters through a public communications program, including by having a portable radio in emergency kits and notifying family members of travel plans. The Bribie Islander

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP: “The Albanese Government is committed to delivering the investments and infrastructure which local communities need to be better prepared for natural disasters. “The project on Bribie Island one of 1051 delivered so far under the program, with the remaining projects to be completed by November 2022. “While no network can ever be 100 per cent disaster-proof, these investments will go a long way towards ensuring local residents can stay connected in the most difficult times, especially to access potentially lifesaving information and advice”. Quotes attributable to the Assistant Minister for Education and Regional Development, Senator the Hon Anthony Chisholm: “Staying connected during a natural disaster can be the difference between life and death, whether that be receiving the latest information or contacting emergency services. “This project is a major boost for Bribie Island and will help ensure we minimise the risk of local communications network disruptions when natural disasters strike. “I am pleased the Albanese Government is listening to the community and making significant inroads toward more resilient communications infrastructure to keep local residents safe and informed.

I would like to thank the following...

Playing Field Dedicated to Long Serving Member/ Executive Robert (Bob) Hamblin

In the words of Robert (Bob) Hamblin. I arrived in Australia and on Bribie Island in February 2006, aged 58.

Being involved in Football in the UK for 43 years, 25 years as a player and 18 years as a coach and committee member, having been involved with ‘The Beautiful Game’ all my life, I soon got the itch to get involved again. The local club, small but big on ambition, with the potential for growth seemed very attractive. Starting out with coaching juniors, but soon I volunteered for the committee, first as Vice

President, then President, then finally the Treasurer. I had an initial reluctance to accept the honour of the main field naming, but my acceptance was influenced by two factors. I am a life member, an honour not bestowed lightly; a reflection that many great volunteers at Bribie had not been afforded such a great honour, volunteers who were founding members and life members included.

The club and its members for the main field being named in recognition of the time invested in Bribie Tigers and the local community. Moreton Bay Regional Council for agreeing to the main field naming and its ongoing support for infrastructure development at Bribie Tigers. And my wife of 55 years for the support on my football and volunteering journey, especially as I step back into a committee position once again.

he other day, I received a friendly postcard from Energex, telling me that they intended to cut off my electricity on the 12th of October, between the hours of 8:00 am and 11:00 am. How nice of them to inform me of this minor inconvenience, though if I was in charge of their Public Relations, I might suggest a peaceful scenic picture or even the smiling faces of their yellow-vested tradies, rather than the alarming orange and red shout, POWER OUTAGE.

of the electricity network”. Social distancing and dog warnings, clearing the fuse box, all sensible suggestions were mentioned, but I did take exception to the advice that I should “refrain from nonessential interaction with our staff on-site”. What exactly did this mean? No cheery waves or greetings; no offers of cups of tea; no observations about the weather? Must we fail to acknowledge their presence in any way, lest we distract them from their duty?

On turning the postcard over to read their greetings, or perhaps an apology for any inconvenience caused, we were merely given instructions on how to deal with this “necessary maintenance

I had plenty to do that did not require power, eat chocolate, then an apple to neutralise the evil of the chocolate, shower, listen to the birds, and make vital decisions as to what to wear, not that I was going

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY anywhere as although my berage doors will open and can be closed manually if I returned before the witching hour of power renewal, Ferrari and I would have to remain outside, cooling our wheels, until such time as my remote would open the doors of Home, Sweet Home! Busy, busy, busy! Then PING! power restored. But the drama had just begun. Now I had to venture into the kitchen and set the clocks on both my Microwave Oven and Stove. At least I had the Manual for the Microwave, so it only took me a mere sixty minutes to successfully perform this task. For any normal person of average intelligence, this would take less than five minutes, even allowing for errors, but I suffer from a medical condition that causes what I refer to as my “finger stutters”. Not surprisingly, I felt inordinately pleased with this victory over the odds, rewarding myself with yet more chocolate, again counteracting this evil by eating yet another apple. I have a lot of sympathy for Eve,

I feel she has received totally undeserved Bad Press! After this hour of frustration, I still had to tackle the clock setting on my ancient but perfectly functioning electric stove. I no longer have the manual for this; it has proceeded its servant and already “Gone to God”. You might quite reasonably question why it was necessary to set yet another clock in my kitchen. Here we encounter a peculiar eccentricity of this appliance. Although the hot plates function perfectly so long as the power is on, the fan-forced oven refuses to cooperate unless the clock is set. No matter what I did, I could not revert to the clock setting mode. As a result of my pressing buttons at random, my poor stove had a complete nervous breakdown, signalling its distress by lights flashing everywhere. Nothing for it but to Google “Destructions”, as my father would say. This I did, but I was asked for the Make and Model. Make I could supply, but Model?

I searched everywhere, in the oven, the grill, both doors, illuminating interiors with a torch, all to no avail. On the point of giving up, I noticed on the white enamel exterior, writ in large numerals, 558. Could this be a CLUE? Sherlock Googled this, and after following several blind alleys, finally reached the answer to the question as follows: Press the mode button 4 times until you see a blinking clock. While it is still blinking, use the + or – buttons to adjust the time up or down. Lesser persons than myself might still be mystified, I had lots of blinking lights still showing, but then I had a flash of pure brilliance! I needed to clear the stove of all my previous attempts and start from scratch by cutting off power to the stove so that it might rest and recover its wits. But the stove cannot be moved, at least by me, so it would not be as simple as turning off a power-point, supposing one existed. There was only one course of action!

Out went this intrepid explorer in her slippers to the fuse box outside and gazed into its innards as if she knew what she was about! I seemed to remember being told by my late, lamented, husband that there was a separate fuse for the stove. He had not lied! There, amongst the multitude of fuses, was one faintly labelled “Stove”. I switched it off, pulled it out, examined it, pushed it back, and switched it on. Back I paddled to the kitchen, mercifully unfried, and noted that most of the lights had ceased to blink. I began to press the mode button the required four times whilst muttering any abracadabra-type incantations that I thought might help. Magically, the stove went into the correct mode, and I was able to set the clock. Would the oven heat up, enabling me to cook my already-prepared casserole? With trepidation did I turn the oven dial, praying for success? YES, YES, YES, VICTORY!

“OLDIES” A Vital Resource

By Colin Walker

Thousands of genuine “carers” throughout Australia, who daily give their all to help those in need, could do worse than consider a public “adopt-a-pensioner” national support program…. with a return on “investment” guaranteed, too.

But why would that be necessary, we might ask, given what our pensioner population already receives in pension payments and entitlements? Well, it is very clear that officialdom (that is, government and all its official “appendages”) has all but given up on how to adequately compensate our pensioner population for all their efforts in contributing, over many decades, to the wealth and progress of Australia (as we know it today). The issue is obviously in officialdom’s “too hard basket”. Admittedly, based on recent and current figures pensioners are not an endangered species; in fact, the demographics show we are living longer and our numbers are increasing, unlike (we are told) the frogs, 20

bears, koalas, elephants, tigers, sharks, monkeys, and all the other native animals claimed to be facing extinction…. those at risk (we are told) in heart-tugging pleas for greater compassion (and more dollars!). Now, I’m an incorrigible animal-hugger and if I had the resources to do it, I would kick in millions (of dollars) to save them all from extinction. But alas, such is not the case. And what concerns me most is just how much of the public funds directed to these worthy adopt-an-animal causes actually find the way to the “sharp end” of these programs, that is the direct care, protection, preservation and upbreeding of these species to ensure that they don’t face extinction. A couple of years ago

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

national and international research focused on where the dollars went (in public welfare programs, for people and animal causes). The results were, to say the least, enlightening. It was found that as little as 10% of the money kicked in found its way to the “pointy end” of the programs actual service delivery to those in need. Upping the ante …. A better deal … for pensioners doesn’t present the same risk of not “delivering the goods” for the dollars outlaid (or committed). In fact, it’s as good as “money in the bank” for governments, at all levels (massive savings of government funds). Apart from the decades of effort most retirees (pensioners, and the self-funded) have contributed to make modern Australia a pretty impressive place, they are very significant contributors to the operations of community service and welfare groups as well. These include our emergency services too…. our “firies”, boaties, childcare, food and other care services for the aged, and so on. In fact, it is more than doubtful that all of our community care and welfare programs could survive if it was not for the efforts of the vast “army” of community volunteers who now keep them going, every day. Governments, on their own, could not carry all of the load, or supply all of the services now extended by caring community volunteers…… including a sizeable proportion of “oldies” who (in many cases) are on their second round of “working for Australia”. The concept of an “adopt a pensioner” program may not seem all that ridiculous when we consider all of these facts. The base rate for Aussieaged pensions is now (official A.B.S. figures) 13% below the acknowledged “poverty line” in Australia, less than 10% of the base rate salary of an elected Federal MP (in Canberra), and we are rated # 20, among acknowledged advanced (and “wealthy”) democracies, worldwide, when it comes to looking after our “oldies”. Like most oldies in the categories covered here,

our contacts range from our grandchildren’s generation to those older and less fit than ourselves. I’d have to concede that I didn’t give much thought (in my younger days) to the plight of our “oldies” …. not until I became one of them. I pitched in a bit…but not enough. But I am, now, constantly in awe of the contribution they have made – and are still making – through volunteer (and unpaid) roles in community service programs, across the board……. covering the needs of all age groups from children to the aged (or the cradle to the grave, if you prefer this analogy). I also have become acutely aware of the massive amount of knowledge, expertise and intelligence being held “in storage” by our retirees and others of our “oldies” generations, most of it going relatively “untapped” by our powers-that-be. It’s like having a massive reservoir on our doorstep, with water almost ready to rush over the spillway – but with no means of drawing from the dam, before it bursts and all the water goes to waste. We hear a lot about young (but experienced) sportsmen and women acting as role models and/or mentors to younger aspirants and emerging “stars” ….and this can only be regarded as a good thing. It’s an example of sensible thinking by our new breed of sporting administrators. Is it unreasonable to suggest that our governments (and education authorities, especially) could show a bit of similar foresight, and draw on more “common sense” mentoring by qualified “oldies” to resolve some of the thorny (and troublesome) issues and decisions confronting worried Aussies, of all ages, today? (A bit of old-fashioned common sense wouldn’t go astray in our classrooms and other places of “learning”, for example!) The “wisdom of age” ……. does it mean ANYTHING to officialdom today – or is it just another cliché, trotted out to impress at the appropriate time?

It is fitted with rescue and spinal boards together with a defibrillator, Oxy Viva and a fully equipped first aid kit. Mr. Butler advised this vehicle allows the volunteer patrolling club members to reach areas, well outside the red and yellow flags, promptly. Unfortunately, it is outside the flagged area where most incidents/ rescues occur. “The Club is ever so thankful for the Bribie Free Masons support,” Mr. Butler said.

Setting Healthy Boundaries?

WE OFTEN PERCEIVE THE WORD “BOUNDARY” AS A DIVIDE OR SEPARATION, THOUGH HEALTHY BOUNDARIES EXPRESS OUR LIMITS, AND WHEN WE DO THAT, NOT ONLY DO WE KNOW WHERE WE STAND, OTHERS DO TOO!

Creating healthy boundaries can provide healthy rules within all our relationships. I know for me creating boundaries is sometimes challenging, though i find it helps when we set up clear limits to begin with and remember how it makes us feel when someone crosses the

Setting boundaries isn’t always easy, especially when we may have none in place. Remember though, you are more than worthy of being heard and respected. Trust yourself, know what is right for you. Clear boundaries help us feel honoured, safe and valued, and are beneficial for reducing stress and our mental wellbeing. We can set boundaries for: • Personal space • Sexuality • Emotions and thoughts • Possessions • Finances • Time and energy • Ethics

“Faces Behind The Music”

“FACES BEHIND THE MUSIC” COMES TO CABOOLTURE REGIONAL ART GALLERY

Internationally renowned Australian photographer Wayne Budge is bringing his “Faces Behind The Music” exhibition to Caboolture Regional Art Gallery. After successfully touring around Australia over the last few years the exhibition returns to his home state of Queensland, Wayne is a local resident of Bribie Island, and will be on show at the Caboolture Regional Gallery from October 26, 2022.

The exhibition showcases Wayne’s Black and White photographic portraits of high profile, predominately Australian singer-songwriters and musicians from the 60’s through to more contemporary artists of today.

In this series, I wanted to create something different than the usual “Promo”, “On Stage” or “Back Stage” shot - I really wanted to photograph the person and not the celebrity. “These portraits were not staged in a photographic studio, and most of the images were taken in the artist’s homes or in their own surrounds. These artists also presented themselves as to how they wanted to be portrayed and

photographed.” Over the years Wayne has worked closely with many high profile Australian and overseas artists, and this has enabled him to become part of their inner circle. Budge says, “My love for photography is leading me to create this series of portraits, which I truly believe captures the soul and character of these living icons.” “Faces Behind The Music” is on exhibit at the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery from October 26 through until November 26 2022. Convenient

Consumerism: THE POWER OF THE CUSTOMER

T

he price of a product or service and the convenience of purchasing and receiving it are two factors that affect consumer behaviour. As a result, companies often direct campaigns toward the customers regarding the cost of the product and the ease of receiving the product. They market convenience, emphasizing the importance of time. This makes all businesses competitive when this extra service may be considered as an investment in customer acquisition.

For all companies involved in providing a product, door-todoor delivery services are crucial if they want to entice the consumer toward their company. Most people no longer wish to have to leave their homes as time becomes more precious and there’s a significant risk outside. These individuals might find shopping to be a chore when done in a physical store. Therefore, the convenience offered by businesses that direct their product to the welcome mat of someone’s home is often preferred.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Aside from swift and accurate transit of products from factory to someone’s house or apartment, customers prefer their opinions to be valued. They would like to have a say in the packaging used by companies as it affects the surrounding environment. Others prefer convenient payment methods as a sure-fire way of making the transaction happen. Removing barriers to transferring money from the client to the business can have a tangible impact on customer acquisition. WHENEVER AND WHEREVER Considering how much busier working individuals are today, time is an essential commodity. They might not have the luxury of leaving their office for lunch, or they could still be working from home to steer clear of being infected by a virus. Whichever their reason for ordering, they would like the liberty to choose whenever and wherever the product or service will arrive. As a result, companies need to provide this form of convenience. This can be a

competitive advantage for a business. For example, a venture like Netflix pioneered the transit of movies by mail. Following this goal of making it easier for consumers to receive a product, they developed on-demand viewing. The streaming services that are available today are a result of encouraging a consumerdriven market. However, there are logistic concerns regarding this aspect of convenient consumerism. The weather can often be an enemy of shipping things on time, as well as the traffic experienced by those moving the products from one place to another. Furthermore, the will of the person delivering items can have an impact on the schedule. Another concern is the access to some locations of the customers. Not all areas have a reliable road network. Therefore, for companies to achieve the preferred convenience of their clients, they need to work with a logistics company that can handle these concerns.

PREFERRED PACKAGING Nowadays, customers purchase products with sustainability and causes in mind. This kind of social consumerism has affected businesses, especially those involved in plastic. Some movements boycott the use of plastics in packaging. These clients prefer reusable and biodegradable materials such as tin, cloth, and paper. Other businesses have decided to develop new kinds of packaging, such as those made from mushrooms or cellulose materials in fruits and plants. For countries where palm or banana trees are common, their leaves are often used as packaging for food. There are also locations in India where leaves are the preferred material when preparing plates for restaurants or picnics. Since people are becoming more socially aware of specific environmental and social issues, businesses have noticed a shift in the factors that affect convenient consumerism. CONVENIENT PAYMENT METHODS Companies that prioritize convenient payment

methods might have a higher customer acquisition rate than other businesses. This could be due to the rush that clients feel when they make a purchase, especially when it’s done by a single tap on a screen. There are fewer barriers to making a money transfer, exemplifying the convenience of buying an item online or in a physical store. Customers also prefer businesses that have many kinds of payment methods. Some people still prefer cash, but others have gone digital. They use e-wallets, online banking, and cryptocurrency. Companies need to find a way to accept these different ways to pay for their product or service, making it easier for clients to give them their money. It is clear that as markets become more saturated, convenience becomes a key unique selling point for businesses. This means gearing more campaigns and capital toward convenience as a factor in a company’s growth. Doing so can help them improve their numbers in customer acquisition.

Art Exhibition and Auction

Your local Rotary Passport Rotary Club is holding an art exhibition on Saturday 3 December 2022, which is International Day for People with Disability. Over 30 paintings from well-known and emerging artists will be on display in the Garden Room of the RSL 99 Toorbul Street from 9 am. From seascapes and landscapes to Indigenous art and abstract and impressionist pieces, all paintings will be auctioned at 4 pm; however, silent bids for your favourite item can be lodged throughout the day. All artists have generously donated their paintings to support our d9560 Passport Club’s programs. There will be several paintings by well-known artist Paul Constable-Calcott, who shares his stories as an Aboriginal gay man living with a disability in urban Australia. His recent painting ‘Respectful Listening’ received much publicity and praise. The painting portrays the journey the Royal Commission took while gathering information from those living with disabilities. Beautiful seascapes by emerging artist Sabina Murphy, who

Also, a couple of paintings by Brenda Pitt Maddock, whose Queensland jockey husband, Russ Maddock, rode for the Queen and Queen Mother. Brenda painted Russ wearing the Queen’s Colours. Entry to our exhibition is free. So, call in and see us, buy a raffle ticket and win one of our beautiful prizes. And perhaps pick up a painting as a Christmas present for yourself or someone special.

12 Years of Christmas Cheer

This year, the Annual Bribie Island Christmas Lights Boat Parade celebrates its 12th year of bringing joy around the canals of Pacific Harbour. Held on Saturday the 10th of December, boaties will light up the Pacific Harbour canals with their decorated boats and jet skis for thousands of residents and visitors to watch and enjoy. This event is organised by local volunteers from the Pacific Harbour Residential Community Association (PHRCA) while boat participants are navigated safely through the canals by the very generous help of the Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR). “The boat parade brings joy to thousands of residents,” tells Ritchie Bloomfield from the PHRCA, “and this year’s event has been made possible thanks to our main sponsors including Bribie Realty, AquaCapture and Div1 Councillor, Brooke Savige.” The day will start at 1.30pm with the Bribie Island VMR cruising the canal with Santa and his helper delivering lolly bags to the waiting children and maybe a Schmako or two for the waiting dogs. Just listen out for Santa’s bell. From 4.30pm til 7.30pm, the Munch Markets will offer a great variety of stall and food holders at the Pacific

Harbour Marina which will be a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and grab some dinner before the main boat parade at 7pm. The 2022 parade will also see a local choir offer their very best singing voices carolling their way through the canals as part of the parade. Vessels of all shapes and sizes are invited to dress up their boats and join in the fun for the chance to win some great cash prizes to the value of $1850. Entry is free with the first 30 entrants each receiving a free goody bag. Participants will gather around the main canal adjacent to the Pacific Harbour Marina from 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. Fireworks, which have been enjoyed since ancient times, symbolise our continued fascination with the effects of fire. After all, despite central heating and electricity, we light candles to create a relaxing ambience. Streaming platforms even offer videos of fireplaces for aesthetics! As the Lunar Eclipse encourages dramatic change this week, although there’s beauty in the new, some aspects of the past are worth preserving. They can help create an inspiring atmosphere that enables progress.

Some events have a sense of history about them. Even when you’re caught in the midst of them, you ‘know’ they’re going to have an effect on the rest of your life. Others, conversely, might turn out to be equally momentous, but you hardly notice them at the time; it’s only later that you realise the profundity of their effects. You’ve been on a significant journey recently. It may be a while before you can assimilate the enormity of all you’ve experienced, and of what you’ve learned. But this week’s Lunar Eclipse brings you a glimpse. A brilliant offer... completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com The search for meaning can take us as deep as the bottom of the ocean, or as high as the Himalayas. Yet, more often than not, the answers we seek are within touching distance. At first glance, the statues on Easter Island appear to be heads sitting on the ground. It’s only on close investigation that we realise that over time, their bodies have been buried by the soil. You’re on a quest for something precious. The Lunar Eclipse enables you to see that you have all the right tools. You just need to start digging in the right place. Don’t miss out... completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Unless you’re reading this in front of a mirror, or with a friend, it’s impossible to know if you’ve got a mark on your cheek right now. Interestingly many people don’t like it when their friends act as a mirror. We don’t like having things pointed out to us. Neither do we see the mirror as being particularly friendly when we look into it and see something we don’t like! This week, under the influence of the Lunar Eclipse, you’ll be presented with a very valid and valuable impression. Hopefully, you’ll have the courage to learn from it. VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sept 23)

When we teach ourselves to like someone (or something) we take pride and pleasure in our appreciation. Our acquired taste gives us greater satisfaction every time we indulge in it. Since you’re not particularly enjoying an experience right now, it’s understandable that you’re keen to make sure you don’t have to repeat it. The last thing you want me to say is, ‘I wonder if you could ever develop a tolerance, even an enthusiasm for this?’ But I’m saying it for reasons you’ll soon understand. This experience can lead to great success. Especially for you... completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

You’ve made courageous choices recently. And with the Lunar Eclipse, you’re in the process of making more. To some degree, circumstances led you to make certain bold decisions. Given the situation you faced, how could you have reached any other conclusion? But you could have done. You could have opted out. Or chosen an easier (less challenging) option. Or accepted a compromise that might have left you very compromised. Instead, you’ve done what you felt was right. This week, it will prove to be very right indeed. The Lunar Eclipse encourages you to embark on a new adventure. You’ve come a long way on the good ship Aries. You’ve visited some fascinating ports and made several promising expeditions into uncharted territories. You’ve opened up some encouraging avenues of trade in far-flung places too. But lately, there’s a sense that you’ve been stuck somewhere for too long. The good news is that it’s about to be time to set off exploring again. Good memories don’t leave us. We just need to be careful that we don’t take so much pleasure from celebrating past successes that we forget to take care of what’s going on in the present. No matter how good last Sunday’s roast tasted, it won’t sustain you for long. Currently, you’re trying to achieve something. You know it’s possible, because you’ve done it before. Some people are experts at getting other folk to say what they want them to say. Specialists in the art of psychological manipulation are so skilful, they don’t even put their victims under pressure. There are times when we have to pull the wool over our own eyes. We need to tell ourselves that we’re doing something, when we’re doing something else. This enables us to break away from established thought patterns. If we didn’t do it, our inner urges and deeper needs wouldn’t get a look in and we’d end up with bottled-up emotions and repressed desires. Which is, of course, not a healthy (or happy) way to live. If you want to see yourself as other people see you, there’s no point looking in a mirror. That only shows you the image in reverse. A Christmas Carols event is planned for Saturday 10th December at 6:30 pm on the oval at Sandstone Point Community & Sports Complex, 202 Bestmann Road E, behind the Sandstone Point Shopping Centre (The Village). The Committee who has organised the Sandstone Point Community Carols in the past few years, for a variety of reasons, decided not to go ahead this year. However, Sandstone Community Church (SCC), which has supported the previous carols events for many years, wanted to host a Christmas Carols event for the local community, so they are inviting the community to “Carols on the Oval” – a carols sing-along and concert featuring Dan Warlow, children’s musician and entertainer, performances by a local Bribie Island Dance Studio, Island Dance and fireworks sponsored by IGA Sandstone Point. Other sponsors include Victory Press, Hans Electrical Service and Nathan’s Sound & Lighting. SCC thanks MBRC for their Community Event Grant to help with production costs. This will be a different event from previous years as there will not be a pre-carols festival. Instead, all resources are being focussed on planning a fun family concert with favourite Christmas Carols. A limited number of glow sticks and battery-operated candles will be available on the night. This will be a free family event, so why not plan to have a family picnic – (BYO chair/ rug, food & drinks, torch or candle) and go along to sing your favourite carols and enjoy featured soloists and entertainment? SCC has been meeting in Sandstone Point Hall for almost 10 years and currently meets each Sunday at 3 pm. They have the heart to support the local community in any way they can, including a Craft Group on Mondays, mainly

music for pre-schoolers and their carers on Thursdays, and Average Joes (AJ’s), a men’s group promoting masculinity, mentoring and mateship, meeting at the Sandstone Point Hotel on Wednesday evenings.

You can also find SCC outside IGA Sandstone Point Tuesdays during school term, 11 am – 12noon. For further information, contact secretary@sandstone.org.au or ph. 0413251569.

Charles Eaton

MASSACRE PART 3

By: AL Finegan

A

s 1834 drew to a close, John Ireland and little William D’Oyly slowly recovered from the trauma of the wreck and subsequent massacre and settled in to live happily with the natives on Murray Island. Ireland lived in the same hut with Chief Duppar and his family. His job was to manage a plantation of yams, and occasionally assist in harvesting turtle and shellfish. Meanwhile, William lived a contented life being well cared for by his adopted mother and her family. From time to time a European trading vessel would arrive, usually Dutch, or British from India. Ireland tried several times to board visiting ships but was held back by the locals. He knew they were fearful of retribution if he escaped and told his story. On 18thSeptember 1835, the trading vessel Mangles under the command of Captain William Carr, anchored off Murray Island. Among the natives who came out in canoes to trade was John Ireland. He told the sailors the

38

tragic story of the wreck of the Charles Eaton but when he was offered a chance to escape, he was reluctant, saying he was now happy enough and would not leave without William. Next day Captain Carr landed on the island to investigate the story and, sure enough, saw the young boy William D’Oyly, whom the natives made no attempt to hide. When Captain Carr eventually returned to Sydney, he told the local press of the two young castaways on Murray Island. During 1835, more stories of white people being held in the Torres Strait reached Sydney from visiting ships. Dutch newspapers arriving from Batavia also reported being told of the white “pets” of the Murray Islanders. Meanwhile the five deserters who abandoned the people on the wreck of Charles Eaton reached the Tanimbar Islands - about 450 km north of Darwin where they were captured by the local natives and put to work. Thirteen months after their capture, the survivors were permitted to leave, reaching Batavia on 6th December 1835. Piggott

arrived seriously ill with fever and died in hospital. The other four were arrested and required to make sworn depositions regarding the wreck of Charles Eaton. They stated that they had stayed on the cutter near the wreck for the rest of that day and night. Having no anchor, they were exhausted from rowing to hold their position. They swore that in the morning they could see no sign of life on Charles Eaton, and they concluded all had been washed off and drowned during the night. Their depositions reached England in June 1836. About the same time, another schooner captain, who had come through Torres Strait and just arrived in London, reported that he had seen white people being held captive by the Murray Islanders. With reports already appearing in London newspapers about the loss of the barque Charles Eaton in the Torres Strait, and the supposed captivity of some of her passengers and crew, Secretary for the Colonies, Lord Glenelg decided to act. He sent a despatch to Sir Richard Bourke, Governor

of NSW, stating ". . .. it will be highly desirable that you should adopt such measures as may appear to you most advisable for ascertaining the fate of those unfortunate persons, and for rescuing them.... "

About the time that Bourke BY: Al Finegean received Glenelg's despatch,

a copy of the Bengal Herald of 28th February 1836 reached Sydney. It reported that as a result of lobbying by Captain D’Oyly, grandfather to young William, and the receipt of other reliable information, the Governor-General of India had exerted his influence to implore the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) to mount an expedition to recover the persons supposed to have survived the wreck of Charles Eaton. The report stated that the East India Company's armed brig of war, Tigris, had departed for Torres Strait in search of survivors. Back in Sydney, Governor Bourke decided to act immediately. The only vessel available for the rescue was HM Colonial Schooner Isabella. At great expense she was fitted out in preparation for

REGULAR FEATURES her mission. A crew of five officers and 25 men were recruited. Isabella was outfitted with six cannons, and an armoury of muskets and cutlasses was installed. Bourke's instructions to its Captain, Charles Morgan Lewis included, “… search and enquire thoroughly wherever he landed and to conciliate with the natives - whilst using the utmost precaution to prevent a surprise attack”. The evidence to assist in the search was sparse and conflicting. Among the reports were the depositions taken at Batavia that indicated there could not be survivors, whilst Carr's and other captains’ statements claimed that there were survivors on Murray Island. Bourke advised Lewis to proceed directly to Murray Island. He could not have given better advice. On 3rd June 1836, Isabella sailed off for Torres Strait on her belated mission of rescue. She dropped anchor at Murray Island on 19th June 1836. Four huge 12m long canoes came out, each containing 16 men. They were fitted with outriggers and with a large platform amidship on which were tortoise shells, coconuts, plantains and other articles of trade. As they approached, they made signs of friendship by rubbing hands over their abdomens and calling out, "poued, poued”, meaning peace, peace. They held up items of trade and asked for "toree" and "tooleck", knives and axes. Their language was not entirely unknown to some on-board Isabella, who pretended by signs not to understand, in the hope that the natives would bring out a white man to interpret. This ruse failed, so axes were tantalisingly displayed as bait. Then by signs, Lewis asked for the white man to be brought out, which they declined. Soon the locals realised there was to be no trade without producing “Wak” (John Ireland). Their desire for axes had overcome their desire to retain John. A canoe was sent to shore to fetch him. An hour later the canoe returned with a white youth, aged about 17. As the canoe came towards Isabella, the lad showed mixed emotions of fear and delight. A stern Lewis demanded silence, and in an uneasy atmosphere, he quietly asked John for the name of the ship in which he had been wrecked. After an anxious moment, John replied, “Charles Eaton”. Lewis then asked John if there were more survivors, and he replied, “One, a child aged about five”. The tension increased when Lewis told him to climb aboard, triggering the natives to seize John, demanding axes first. The axes were tossed down, and John clambered aboard. On the beach, Lewis could see little D'Oyly, who was holding hands with one of the women. Now having the advantage of Ireland to interpret his demands, there would be no mistake in his message to the natives. Either they produced the child in return for axes, or force would be used. The sullen natives returned to shore. After waiting for some time while staring at an empty beach, Lewis ordered the gun

ports opened, and the cannons run out. When there was still no movement on the shore, he ordered a cannon to fire a shot at the water near the beach. The sudden deafening bang and huge splash had the desired effect. The child, surrounded by the islanders, was brought to the beach clinging to a young, sobbing woman, who was kissing Willy repeatedly. Duppar, resigned to the inevitable, pulled Willy from the grasp of the woman, stepped into a canoe, and was rowed to Isabella. Willy was bawling, clearly terrified and kept pointing to the shore. Duppar forcibly released Willy to John, took the axes from Lewis, then solemnly returned to his island. Isabella weighed anchor and set sail.

Lewis needed more details about the massacre. John struggled initially to form sentences, but after a few days, his English language skills returned. According to Captain Lewis, “Young John was deeply imbued with native superstitions…. the little boy, Willy D’Oyley, spoke nothing but the island dialect. He is a fine boy.” When an emotional Ireland finally told the terrible story of the massacres, a horrified Lewis became more determined to search the neighbouring islands to find the murderous tribe and deliver justice. Isabella anchored off Masig Island where they were told by the locals that it was the men from Aureed who had committed the massacre and taken the skulls back to that island. Taking a volunteer from Masig as guide, Isabella sailed off for Aureed and dropped anchor. Lewis led an armed party ashore but found the village deserted and showing evidence that it had been hurriedly abandoned. In the centre of the village, the men found a decorated hut, and in it a huge mask made of a single painted turtle shell surrounded by human skulls. Some appeared to be of European origin. They took 41 skulls and

mask, then set fire to everything, including plantations of tobacco, leaving the island a smoking charred ruin. Isabella called at other nearby islands, but all had been deserted by the natives for fear of being punished. Days later, Thomas Harrison, bound for Java from Sydney, came into sight and from her master, Lewis learnt that Tigris was somewhere in Torres Strait also searching for survivors. Whilst Lewis was on board Thomas Harrison, Tigris, under command of Captain Iggledson, hove into view. The surgeon of Tigris examined the Aureed mask figure and its skulls and pronounced that 17 were European. Iggledson insisted that he take young D'Oyly to his grandfather in Calcutta, which Lewis declined in view of his instructions from Governor Bourke. As SE trade winds would not permit a return to Sydney down the Australian east coast, both ships headed west. The following day, Tigris was about 5km ahead of Isabella when Lewis heard cannon fire. He knew this to be a distress call. As Isabella closed with Tigris, Lewis could see that she had struck a reef and that her rudder had been ripped off. With difficulty, the crew of Isabella in their long boat, towed Tigris clear of the reef and lashed her to Isabella's quarter. The ships sailed as one for the nearby Raffles Bay where a new rudder was built. On 24th August both ships arrived in Kupang, Timor, where they separated - Tigris for India and Isabella for Sydney via Cape Lewin, WA. She reached Sydney on 12th October 1836. On arrival in Sydney, Lewis and the two boys immediately became local celebrities. John gave a narrative of his experiences to Governor Bourke in council, and afterwards was presented with a first-class passage to England. He later released a popular book on his adventures and went on to have a successful life. On 17th November, at the direction of Governor Bourke, the 17 European skulls were given a Christian funeral service and interred in a monument built in the form of a huge altar stone recording the tragedy by which they perished. The monument is now located at the Bunnerong Cemetery at Botany Bay. Lewis escorted William D'Oyly to London on HMS Buffalo arriving in May 1838 and delivered him to grateful relatives. In September 1839 Lewis arrived back in Sydney and immediately applied to Governor Gipps for the reward he had been promised for a successful rescue. Gipps rejected his application and instead appointed him as the harbour master at Port Phillip. In December 1841, this brave man suffered a severe stroke and became destitute. Friends brought his case before the Legislative Council. Finally, in 1845, he was belatedly awarded the promised £300 for his successful rescue mission. He died soon after, aged just 40. BRIBIE NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS FROM 60 YEARS AGO For this History Page, I have selected cuttings from the Bribie newspapers of 1962/63. The first Bribie newspaper started in June 1962 when the Bribie Bridge was being constructed, prior to being opened in October 1963.It is interesting and entertaining to read the sorts of things that the Counciland community were concerned about in those days. Here is a selection.

VACCINATIONS ON BRIBIE ISLAND

STREET NAMES Some confusion is being caused in regard to street names. Quite a few residents on Cotterill Estate have Hall Street marked on their deeds of Property when their property is in Cotterill Avenue. The Council has been asked to supply the Ratepayers Association with the correct names of Streets or Avenues from Fifth Ave. or Shirley Bridge to Wattle Street at right angle to the Esplanade, so that the correct names can be inserted on the Title Deeds.

BRIBIE JETTY It is becoming a practice of some car owners to drive on to the Bribie Jetty, park their car alongside the waiting shed and start fishing off the Jetty obstructing the full use of the jetty to the general public. To warn car owners against this practice it is suggested that a sign NO PARKING ON JETTY be placed at the entrance.

40

www.thebribieislander.com.au

Salk vaccine injections were administered to local residents on Tuesday July 10th at the immunization clinic situated in the Ambulance Hut on Bribie. They were mostly third injections. The Health Inspector intimated that the Council had decided to carry 4th injections..

BRIBIE MUST BEAT THE BODGIES Has the curse of Bodgyism descended upon Bribie? This is the question that must be solved immediately if the social life on this fine island is not to be defaced and deformed beyond recognition. On Saturday night the “Braves” together with their moral assistants, in the form of females, created as scene worthy of American outlaws..

STRAYING STOCK Complaints are still being made about straying cows and horses roaming the built-up area of Bongaree and breaking into properties and damaging gardens. A final warning should be given to the owners of these animals. A law-abiding citizen should have some redress from damage caused by straying cattle. The Bribie Islander

BRIBIE OF TODAY & TOMMORROW

THE COMMON MARKET People of the UK and British Commonwealth, and indeed all Britishers throughout the world, will be dissatisfied with, if not disgusted at President De Gaulle’s obstinacy against Britain’s entry into the Common Market. Apart from whether they believe, or how they may be divided on the subject, the last source from which British residents and sympathisers would expect oppositiion is France.

Bribie Island, a semi-tropical island lying in a sapphire blue sea, today is the sanctuary for those in the wintery years of their lives. Here, lazing in the sunshine, fishing, playing bowls or walking through the bush lands are the people who have given years of work to help bring Australia to its high standards. This is the Bribie of today, but what of the Bribie of tomorrow. With two bridges spanning Pumicestone Channel, a great change will take place. Towering hotels will be built, and in time will become a more popular playground than the Gold Coast. Cars will burn up the roads where now only bush tracks exist. The natural beauty and life of the island will disappear.

HOTEL AT BONGAREE Seeing most of the population on Bribie live on the Channel side it was proposed that action be taken to procure an Hotel at Bongaree. There are two bowling greens at Bongaree but neither of these are licensed to sell liquor to locals or visitors to take away and who are compelled to travel three miles and back to obtain a bottle of beer for home consumption.

2nd BRIDGE TO BRIBIE ISLAND? Large scale subdivision of Crown Lands on Bribie Island has been deferred by the State Government until after the completion of the new bridge under construction. One of the reasons or this decision was that investigations were pending on some projects for development that had been planned by the Caboolture and Landsborough Shire Councils. These projects could possibly involve the construction of another bridge further up Pumicestone Channel towards Caloundra.

ARTIST STILL IN HOSPITAL Bribie Island’s artist Ian Fairweather is still in Princess Alexandra Hospital with an ear infection. It is expected that he will be there for at least another week. Mr. Fairweather’s paintings, sold recently at auction, brought more than 3000 Pounds. Australian art critics have credited him as being Australia’s greatest living artist. One of his pictures was sold to the Art Gallery Trust for 400 Pounds and the rest were sold in 10 minutes.

RUSH TO BUY LAND ON BRIBIE ISLAND Bribie Island was entering a land boom with elements of popularity and “glamour like Surfers Paradise” estate agents said recently. Southerners and people now living in Malaysia and PNG had rushed to buy land since the announcement that it would have a bridge to the mainland. “Land which sold two years ago for 600 pounds is now selling for 1000 pounds despite the credit squeeze.

DELAY ON BRIDGE A delay on the Bridge has occurred with lack of sufficient beams for the support of the deck. “There is a temporary delay in the beams due to a production difficulty in Brisbane, however we hope to have some beams in a fortnights time. There is no slack in the work at the bridge as there is another deck to pour and we have started on the handrails”.

Does Having

a Pet Teach Responsibility

PART 1

P

REGULAR FEATURES

et adoption can teach anyone responsibility and can even give your children a reason to wake up early on a Saturday morning. Being a pet parent at a young age can help children develop essential, valuable life skills; it can also make them better pet parents in the future. We all know the benefits of pets, including lower stress levels, increased happiness, and motivation. But, perhaps the most significant advantage of pet ownership for children, besides having a loyal best friend, is learning responsibility. HOW DO PETS TEACH RESPONSIBILITY? Attention and Care Pets require just about the same attention and care as children; they need regular vet visits and a schedule. Dogs are creatures of habit. Once you get them on a schedule, including when to wake up, go outside, and go for a walk, that schedule becomes hard to break. Other pets, such as cats, rabbits, and fish, don’t require as much planning and scheduling. All pets need to be fed, given water, and regularly see the vet. Cats and dogs might also require grooming. Everyone can benefit from being able to keep a schedule, especially children.

Companionship Even pets that are independent need human companions. A human will need to feed them and fill their bowls with water. Additionally, dogs might require training to learn how to behave at home and out in public. Anyone can become more responsible because they must fulfill their pet’s needs. When a small child begins feeding their pet, they become more compassionate and learn how to care for others. Unconditional Love Pet parents wake up early on Saturday mornings for their pets because they love them. Pets offer us unconditional love that we can’t get anywhere else. Pets teach your child what it’s like to be needed and loved without asking for anything, which helps everyone learn the importance of love and compassion. Putting Others First You can’t always do what you want to do when you have a pet. For example, if you have a dog, you can’t always go on vacation for a week without having some sort of plan, or even sleeping in late on the weekends. Having a pet teaches us to put others first, especially when someone or some pet relies on us. Being a pet parent forces you to consider what’s truly important in your life.

Kathy Vincent If you had driven past the Bribie Island Croquet Club a few weeks ago you would have seen tables set out for almost 50 people. There was a lot of laughter as everyone tucked into a free lunch, enjoying a glass of wine too! Not the usual Croquet afternoon. Was this some sort of celebration you may ask? Well yes, it was. This was a BBQ lunch for the members to say thank you for a very successful competition season. The Club has many internal competitions in all Croquet disciplines. There is Association, Golf Croquet, Ricochet and Gate ball. There are far too many for me to mention and some members have had their photos in this magazine many times! I cannot possibly include everyone. There is Joy and Jenny with

the Ricochet cup. Florence McLaren presented the Florence McLaren Cup to Greg Wymark. These are just two of the many Highlights of the afternoon. There are many competitions held with the Sunshine Coast Regional Croquet Clubs (SCRCC). This is against the other Croquet Clubs in the Sunshine Coast region. Plate for those who may not have been playing for long, Shield for those with more experience and Pennant for the experienced players. Plate just missed the championship by 1 hoop, Pennant played exceptionally well against State players but the stars this year were the Shield Team. Not only did they win the competition, but they were also way ahead. They were focused, determined, and could not be beaten. Well done Sandy Edwards, Shelly Moar, Jan Sampson, Sid and Lyndell Goodier, Dolly Taylor, Maggie Lawson and Kathy Vincent.

5WAYS A

well-planned sleeping schedule is a crucial part of your selfimprovement. It helps us in focusing on our daily tasks and be productive. If you have difficulty falling asleep within 30 minutes, try implementing these 5 tips to improve your sleeping schedule.

ESTABLISH A BEDTIME RITUAL

Identifying the cause of your sleep problems can help you address them and improve your quality of sleep. Lifestyle changes can also help, especially if you’re experiencing short-term insomnia that is caused by something in your life (like a stressful situation). Your body needs time to wind down at night, so try to stick to a routine every night before bedtime. A relaxing ritual can be anything from taking a warm bath to reading a book or ingesting a CBD concentrate. However, avoid doing anything too stimulating before bedtime (such as watching suspenseful movies) because it may keep you awake for hours afterward.

LIMIT NAPS

A nap is a short period of sleep that occurs during the day. It’s not considered necessary for health and well-being, but it can be beneficial to many

people who don’t get enough night-time sleep. Naps are a great way to recharge your batteries. But they can also be detrimental to your sleep schedule if you’re taking them at the wrong time or if they’re too long. Naps that are longer than 30 minutes may make it harder for you to fall asleep at night and napping in the afternoon can interfere with sleep at bedtime. The best time for a nap is in the early afternoon, after lunch. If you do take a nap, limit it to 30 minutes or less.

EXERCISE DAILY Exercise is one of the most important factors in maintaining a good sleeping schedule. Exercise releases endorphins and adrenaline, which makes you feel good and can help you get over any anxiety or stress that may be keeping you up. It also helps to clear your mind as well as your body, which can help with stress relief. There are many ways to incorporate exercise into your day, whether it is walking, jogging, swimming, or working out at the gym. Find what works best for you and stick with it! If you have trouble sticking with an exercise routine, try finding a partner or friend to work out with who also has this goal in mind. This will help motivate

each other and keep each other on track.

CUT DOWN ON CAFFEINE

It’s no secret that caffeine can make you feel more awake and alert, but did you know it can also affect your sleep? Caffeine is a stimulant that’s found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate. The amount of caffeine a person needs to feel its effects varies from person to person. The average cup of coffee contains between 95 and 200 milligrams (mg) of caffeine. The average cup of tea contains between 20 and 50 mg of caffeine. Caffeine can make it harder for you to fall asleep at night. It may also cause frequent awakenings during the night or make it hard for you to go back to sleep when you wake up during the night. If you have trouble sleeping, try cutting down on your intake of caffeinated foods and drinks before bedtime — especially later in the day when your body is used to having them from earlier in the day. Don’t drink any caffeinated beverages after 2 p.m., for example, if your bedtime is typically 11 p.m.

HAVE A LIGHT SNACK BEFORE BEDTIME

A light snack before bedtime can help you fall asleep faster

and stay asleep longer. It also helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable, which is important for healthy sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, try having a small snack before going to bed. Here are a few examples of snacks that are good for sleep: 1. Yogurt and granola: This combination contains protein, which helps build muscle and repair tissue. It also contains carbohydrates that release energy slowly over time. The calcium in yogurt helps relax muscles and nerves and may help you fall asleep faster. 2. Cheese and crackers: Cheese is full of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps produce serotonin in the brain — a chemical that makes us feel relaxed and sleepy. These tips should be a great place to start if you’re looking to improve your sleeping schedule. By making small changes and tweaks, you’ll find that it is possible to sleep better and wake up more refreshed. It’s still a good idea to speak with a medical professional before you make any drastic changes or decisions. They can help you determine the best course of action for you as an individual and offer tips that are customized to your specific needs. Issue 178 Nov 4, 2022

Have you been to the Bribie Island Community plant nursery in the last couple of weeks??

I

f the answer is ‘yes’, you would have noticed the changes that a brilliant band of volunteers have completed. The nursery closed its gate for 10 days and volunteers got stuck into renovations. The entire floor surface of the nursery has been replaced with a high-grade recycled product which not only looks like a treat but has made the nursery a safer environment for our community shoppers. The decision to upgrade

was prompted by customer comments that the old surface was not always safe or practical for aged or disabled customers and volunteers, especially in bad weather. Now customers & volunteers with wheelchairs, wheelies or just the wobbles should have a much better experience. I think that all those who have visited since the upgrade will agree that issues have been addressed and it’s now a pleasant day out for all. As well as the surface

upgrade, plants have been rearranged to make it easier for customers to find their favourite plants as well as find new favourites. The nursery not only showcases native & tropical plants, but you can find all sorts of other surprises around the grounds. New additions to our stock are some mobile wooden plants Stands & wooden trellis which have been made by the local men’s shed. Stage 2 of renovations will also see new plant benches

to further enhance the look & practical aspect, so watch out for these updates. Our nursery is often gifted donations by our generous community, and we would like to thank them for this as it plays an enormous part in the assistance, we give our greater community. So come on in and have a look around and buy a few goodies so we can continue to donate back to our community.

National Recycling Week 7 - 11 November 2022 This year's theme asks us to consider the materials and items we use, recommending we choose items that are used over and over again. Household items that are used once and disposed, are creating more waste for disposal to landfill and more need for recycling. These choices will always be more expensive for us and the environment. To make everyday items, there is a large investment of money, design, mining or growing, transport, fuel, processing, display for purchasing, labour and specialists, water, energy, time, and after you use them: recycling or disposal.

RECYCLING TIPS: Takeaway coffee cups, compostable packaging and many household items can't be sorted or recycled through your household recycling bin. Never place rechargeable battery operated and electrical items in bins. Powered items disposed in bins have already caused fires in collection trucks this year. We are unable to safely handle these items in bins and ask residents to take them to retailers who recycle them, or to Council's major waste facilities. Check Councils website for information on: • What can I put in my bins? • Search where to recycle or dispose • Council waste facilities, locations and what can be

The Best Methods to Refresh Your House Before Summer by Himanshu Singh

summer is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to start thinking about refreshing your home for the warm weather ahead. here are some of the best ways to revive and redecorate your home before summer arrives. USE NATURAL COLOURS AND TEXTURES When renovating your home for summer, consider using natural colours and textures. Earthy tones and materials such as wood, wicker, and stone can help to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the summer months. These natural elements can also be used to create visual interest on walls and furniture, adding extra personality to your home. Adding natural touches to your home is a great way to celebrate the coming of summer, and it can also be a cost-effective way to give your home a fresh look.

REDO THE EXTERIOR

Exterior cladding of your house can be a great way to prepare for summer. If your house needs some repairs, now is the time to take care of them. Additionally, if your house is made from concrete or brick, you may want to consider having it rendered. If you’re thinking about having our house rendered, it’s important to choose a reputable contractor who can do the job properly. The process of house rendering can be expensive, but it’s worth it in the long run.

UPGRADE THE OUTDOOR SEATING

ADD SOME MORE PLANTS

CHANGE THE CURTAINS

Upgrading the seating is one of the most effective methods to freshen up your house for summer. Adding new furniture or cushions can make the space more comfortable and inviting, and it can also be a great way to show off your style with the latest furniture trends.

Adding plants to your home can be a great way to celebrate the coming of summer. Not only do they add a touch of natural beauty to your surroundings, but they can also help to improve your home’s air quality. Plants can also be a great way to reduce stress, and they can provide a calming atmosphere in any room. Plants can be a great way to freshen up your home for summer, and they can also provide many benefits for your health and well-being. By adding some plants to your house this season, you can enjoy all the benefits that they have to offer.

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to refresh your home for summer is to change the curtains. Curtains can add a lot of personality to a space, and they can also help to control the amount of light that enters a room.

There are many different options for seating, so you can find something that suits your needs and preferences. If you’re looking for a comfortable and stylish option, consider upgrading to rattan or wicker furniture. These pieces are weatherproof and can withstand the summer heat, making them a perfect choice for your porch. If you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly, consider using cushions instead of new furniture. Cushions can be used to update any type of seating, and they come in a variety of styles and colours.

When choosing new curtains for summer, it’s important to consider the style of your home and the amount of sunlight that is available. Natural fabrics such as cotton or linen are ideal for summer, as they allow air to flow through them, and they can help to keep your house cool. If you’re looking for a more decorative option, sheer curtains are a good choice, as they let in plenty of light while still providing some privacy.

DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE THE SPACE Decluttering and organizing your house before the summer can be a great way to prepare for the warm weather ahead. Tidying up your space can help to create a more relaxing and inviting atmosphere, and it can also make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Fast-tracking reconstruction of White Patch crossing Moreton Bay Council is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) for the reconstruction of the White Patch bridge after the old causeway was washed away by flood waters during the February weather event. Mayor Peter Flannery said the EOI process will enable Council to consider contractors from a shortlist, saving time and money once it goes to tender. “Council is seeking funding from Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements for the construction of this new bridge,” he said.

“If we are successful in acquiring QRA funding for this project, Council must complete the works within two years of the weather event in align with funding arrangements. “The EOI allows us to get ducks in a row so if we get funding approval, we can go to tender straight away while simultaneously finalising the detailed design for the project. “Having a list of contractors who have demonstrated the ability to undertake this work prior to going out to tender saves Council and tenderers time and costs associated with procuring these

works and allows for a fasttendering process to expediate the delivery of the new bridge.” Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) said the proposed reconstruction will see the existing temporary crossing - built within 96 hours during the February flood event removed and replaced with a more flood resilient bridge. “This crossing has been washed away twice in the past 15 years, leaving the residents of White Patch isolated with no access onto Bribie Island via White Patch Esplanade,” she said. “This is an important project to improve road access and reliability

not only during our wet months but throughout the year, which I hope will prevent this community from being cut off in future weather events. “The White Patch community showed great community spirit and resilience back in February and I know they will be happy to have a safer crossing in and out of town during flood events once the project is complete.” Expressions of interest will be open to market until January 2023 with requests for tenders open from March 2023 dependent on State Government Environment approvals and funding.

COMPOSITE

DECKING IS A GREAT OPTION FOR YOUR POOL AREA

Pondering building a pool in your backyard? Composite decking materials might be the best option. For many homeowners, the backyard swimming pool is their escape from the world’s cares. There’s nothing serene like a cool dip on a sweltering summer afternoon to restore and refresh you. You have more choices to start looking for a new pool. HOW COMPOSITE DECKING IS A GREAT OPTION FOR YOUR POOL AREA Suppose you are wondering about the material for your decking board. In that case, all that you need is some information pertaining to it. All sorts of materials can be used to build one. You can choose from various composite decking options to adorn your pool area. Composite decking materials are made from recycled materials, including plastic and wood fibre. Since there’s no weathering or cracking to occur, they can last for 20 years or more. Plus, composite decking is nonporous, so

mould growth is less likely. SAFER If you are a homeowner or involved in ongoing building work, you have often been warned about the dangers of sandstone, concrete or timber decking surfaces. These risky hazards include slipperiness, round and unstable surfaces, cuts and splinters. Composite decking offers a smooth and clean surface along with a safe pool area. SLIP RESISTANCE Slip resistance is a top concern for pool owners because a solid grip is especially essential when standing on pool decks. A wet floor can be a dangerous one. It’s true. Even floors made of the products used to withstand wetness can turn slippery. In comparison, the composite decking is laced with anti-slip powder. Heat reflection The dark pool decks make it difficult to walk in scorching heat as it absorbs. Whereas composite decking reflects UV rays and is comfortable to walk.

RESISTS WATER Composite decking absorbs less water than wood. This new decking technology has been developing for several years now. Still, as the demand for plastic-based materials increases, composite decking products have become more popular. Various design options The deck is an excellent choice when it comes to making the most of your space and investing in additional plumbing. The designs for pool decks can be chosen from a wide variety, making them a sought-after addition to your pool. Pool decks can be formed into a variety of shapes with composite decking materials. BETTER LOOK AND FEEL Many homeowners don’t realise that several composites could provide you with the look, feel, and durability of a real wood deck. These composites not only look good but can withstand the test of time and will continue to look great for many years.

SAFETY DAVE THE FRENCHIE’S MESSAGE:

Safety Dave says for this coming holiday period check your LIFE JACKETS: • do you have the appropriate life jacket for the whole trip? • are the life jackets suited to the activity being undertaken? • do you have one jacket for everyone on board? • are the jackets in good condition and correctly labelled? • if boating at night, do the jackets have reflective tape on them? and • do you have an appropriate sticker/label showing where the life jackets are stored? Many boaters have their jackets still in their original packaging – this leads to lack of effective inspection and the deterioration of the straps. This in turn also makes it difficult to fit in an emergency. The bottom line – life jackets should not be stowed and forgotten. They are difficult for a novice to put on in an emergency, and then it’s too late to realise they are inappropriate for the intended person in that emergency. Skippers should inspect each before each trip, show all passengers how to wear and have them easily accessible for use, preferably worn. “SO PLEASE WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKETS!” “BUT importantly – Always remember if you are heading out on the water LOG ON with your local VMR or Coast Guard, its a free service for everyone, so why wouldn't you! - It just may save your life!" ith the weather not being so favourable for any type of boating, some of our keen fishermen have tried their luck throughout the Passage when it wasn’t raining, resulting in only a few coming back with some dinner. However, our regular fishability group produced a good catch each week, bringing home some big bream, ranging from 45-65cm and some nice flathead. Mick put some crab pots up Ningi creek for 4 days, but only ended up with two keeper muddies and returned lots of little ones. A great sign that there will be plenty around in the future. Cheryl and Steve caught a few almost big enough breams out the front of the Sandstone Point Hotel, while Rachel encountered lots of weed but still bought home 2 summer whiting and a bream. Blake

THE QUEEN'S

NOW THE TERM 'HORSEBOX' IS COMMONLY USED IN THE UK BUT IN AUST, THE MORE FAMILIAR TERM IS HORSE FLOAT, BUT IN EITHER CASE, IT MEANS A VEHICLE IN WHICH EQUINES ARE TRANSPORTED.

HORSEBOX. A HORSE By: David Horrocks

eons ago I worked as a tech sales rep for a company that supplied just about everything needed to build whatever type of truck body anybody wanted. I had a good customer located near the famous town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. The town was and still is most famous for the making of pork pies however the area was also noted as the home of the Quorn Hunt; established in 1696 it was the most prestigious and famous foxhunt in the country - really quite posh, you had to be somebody to hunt with the Quorn. These were the days before the 'sport' was banned, when the high and mighty would gather in packs of riders and hounds to roar across the countryside including all the farmland in pursuit of a fleeing fox. Fence jumping was part of the fun. All damage to crops was compensated for of course - no point in upsetting the peasants. Well, my motor body building customer located in the area had many clients who were members of 'The Quorn', they bought his horseboxes to transport their 'hunters'. One client of note was Lady Agatha, a prominent member of the local landed gentry. She was a woman of large stature and generous physical proportions. She also possessed a personality to match her appearance and would brook no interference with her intentions. She was formidable, she was fearsome. It was the opinion of the locals that if she had been around at the time and had led the charge of the light brigade the battle would have had a different outcome. She was in fact the person who had given the nickname of 'Sar Major' to my client because he wouldn't take any of her bullying’s. Well, this lady was having a new box built by my client and one day whilst he was out somewhere she arrived at the factory and waltzed in to inspect progress. The male staff were terrified of her and almost to a man scattered and hid as they saw her enter. The few slow movers were cornered and stood in fear as she inspected the construction. She

was of course referring to the stallion! The impressive visitor introduced himself as the Queen's equerry and in a very refined voice told that he was there to discuss the purchase of a new horsebox for his employer.

"Well, it's the normal size, your ladyship" pleaded one of the men.

Suitably impressed S.M took the visitor into his cluttered office, cleared the top of the desk, and started taking notes. He advised the gentleman of all the latest ideas as regards designs such as the recent introduction of positioning the horses diagonally across the truck rather than at right angles as had previously been done. The visitor just shook his head and replied that the old methods were fine and acceptable. He then requested that the builder source a truck cab/ chassis from the supplier for them and said that they preferred a Bedford model. Sar Major was perplexed as Bedford was a pretty downmarket marque usually bought by local councils and commercial buyers. Wouldn't

Sar Major summed up the situation and told her "Aggie you've had six kids; your arse is too big". She looked at him, threw back her head and roared with laughter. "Well, I suppose I can turn sideways to get in". Then off she went still laughing. But this story is about the Queen's purchase, not Lady Agatha's so back to the beginning. Sar Major told me the story of how one day a very imposing, impeccably dressed man rode into the factory yard. He was mounted on a huge black stallion. "Gawd" S.M. related to me "talk about flared nostrils - you could have stuck a pint pot up 'em". He

the Royals be better with something more upmarket he asked to which the equerry replied, "The Queen doesn't have to keep up with the Jones. " After the visitor had departed S.M. started to organise things. He contacted the local Bedford truck dealer and asked about the supply. When he told the dealer who the customer was there was a silence and the dealer told him he would get back to him. He didn't, but the Bedford factory did. They asked which model he wanted etc., they also asked what wheelbase he wanted on the chassis. Now, normally each particular body needs a different wheelbase spacing on which to mount the required body design. The builder usually picks the available wheelbase that is longer than what he wants then he cuts it down in length to exactly what suit the needs. No; the man on the phone said, what exactly did he need, they would build what he wanted. Now,

this came as a shock, the fact that they would interrupt a production line to make a one-off was unbelievable. It would normally require a large number order before they would oblige in this way but given who the client was, they would produce what was required. Now, this little event planted a seed in S.M.'s mind. If such a large organisation would jump hurdles and bend rules, then what would smaller firms do to 'oblige'? So being the wheeler and dealer he was he made sure that every supplier knew that he was building to special order and when he wanted anything, just anything he dropped the hint when he ordered that the item was for 'a special job'. He traded on this advantage to get special treatment for long after the new horsebox was being driven around to events by members of the royal household.

Dear Editor, “Ignorance or arrogance, the Queensland government deficits has now reached $100 billion, the greatest deficit since the start of Federation. The governments answer, spend another $12/$20 billion on a plan to push water uphill to generate power going downhill. The bulk of these taxpayers’ dollars will go to China, the world’s largest polluter, to buy solar panels and wind turbines. which will all need complete replacement in 20 years. The pollution generated in the manufacturing process will probably never be recovered by the solar panels and windmills. The rail river tunnel cost has blown out from $6 billion to almost $9 billion and the premier wants to demolish the Gabba to add some extra seats at a cost of over $2 billion. Meanwhile, the police station on Bribie closes at 5 pm, it takes four hours for an ambulance to get to you, ambulance ramping has reached 45 percent and you can wait up to 9 hours before you're seen in the hallway by an intern. Over 6000 people are currently homeless in SEQ and 17000 DV victims need homes to go to many will be forced to live with abusive partners. Cost to fix the social housing, $7.8 billion according to a recent media report, but much easier for the government to continue virtue signalling its green credentials rather than fix a problem that's already five years overdue. Thomas J Mahon JP Bcs Dear Editor, Ian Plimer, former university Professor of Geology gave a very informative speech about ORBIT CHANGE, generally misrepresented as "climate change" at the Bribie Island RSL which was attended by 250-300 open minded people. I believe that most of his knowledge is far beyond the comprehension of the people who attended & also of those conspicuous by their absence. To comment on "climate change" one has to have assumed knowledge, a level of education in Geology that frankly speaking is not evident in the vast majority of people. High School Geology at a pinch. I would like an article about how they help Christian organisations. No. I didn’t think so. My father was/is one and it has destroyed our relationship because he is full of selfpride. The times are changing but THAT organisation is as awful and dangerous as ever! Wake up please Ed. Don’t try slide this one past us. “Perturbed Island Resident” but not Mickey Mouse Dear Editor, Good on Horst! Like him I believe that we would all be healthier if we could cut down on the amount of air pollution caused by burning coal, petrol and diesoline. I just wonder what it would be like living without transport and electricity. Blakey. Dear Editor, I've read with interest all the comments on Climate Change, and catastrophic effects thereof. But was extremely interested in comments by Dr Michael Cavenor PhD. Physics. Although I have no degree in

science, I have an enquiring mind and have done a lot of reading on the subject both current and historical. I agree with Dr Cavenor entirely, having just read Professor Ian Plimer's latest book 'Green Murder'. Professor Plimer deals in facts, not hypothesis or computer modelling, and he believes the science is never settled, there are always questions and discussions. Climate is changing all the time. Perhaps if HB reads this book, it might give her something to chew on. LouLou Taylor
