TASTE OF MISSIONS WHERE CAN YOU GO TO GET FREE FOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT LEAVING MUSTANG? That’s right! As we kicked off mission’s emphasis week on September 28th we were able to host our annual Taste of Missions event in The Venue. This event is where families in our church have the opportunity to prepare their favorite dishes from around the world. Then, in a “marketplace” kind of feel, they are able to hand out their food samples to all those in attendance. India, Mexico, England, Georgia, Korea, Zimbabwe, and even the U.S. were just a few of the countries represented at the event. Main courses, snacks, and even desserts filled plates as we celebrated with food, our world’s diversity. We were also reminded of the responsibility that we have as a church to make missions a priority.

4 / THEBRIDGEAG.ORG

Our church, for many years, has made it a great priority to actively support through prayer, volunteering and finances the many men and women who choose to preach the gospel as missionaries to the, “ends of the earth.” This past year, as a church, we have supported monthly over 70 individual missionaries and many mission’s groups and organizations. Additionally, over 100 of our church’s attendees have served on a short-term missions trip/project in the past year. Simply, missions is a priority here at The Bridge and we’re glad that we can work and serve together to take the message of Jesus Christ everywhere!

HALLOWEEN WHAT TO DO...WHAT TO DO..

Halloween seems to be the one holiday in American Christianity that we just don’t know what to do with. We are happy to celebrate cultural or historical holidays like the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, or New Year’s Day. We love religious holidays like Easter and Christmas, but Halloween has quite a mixed history, and so we don’t know how to approach it. In one sense, it is a religious holiday. In another sense, and one that is far more obvious to a 21st century American, it’s a cultural holiday. To most families in America, Halloween is a fun time to eat candy, dress up, and have fun with friends. Yet because some choose to use this holiday to celebrate evil and its effects, it also can be a dark holiday.

8 / THEBRIDGEAG.ORG

With such a complicated mixture of influences, it’s important for each family to use discernment and wisdom in determining if and how to celebrate this holiday. I believe that there are sinful ways to participate in Halloween, just as there are with any holiday. Regardless of what you think of the holiday and its roots, the culture we have been sent by Jesus to reach is going to celebrate Halloween. We all have in front of us a wide open door for missionary engagement in our neighborhoods. I want to encourage you not to miss out on the opportunity. After all, the “church” (that’s you) isn’t supposed to be scary! Let’s make sure that this Halloween, however you choose to (or not to) celebrate, you lovingly display to your neighbors what Jesus’ love really looks like.

If you are looking to be more intentionally engaged this year, I want to present you with a few ideas for how you can more effectively walk through the open door that

GO TO THEIR PLACE Join what is happening elsewhere

Halloween presents to us as Jesus’s missionaries.

7. Attend the Party

BE HOSPITABLE

If neighbors are throwing parties, you may want to join

Don’t just give out candy

them. If so, bring drinks, food or whatever is needed. Then, serve by helping clean up.

1. Give out the best Candy Please, don’t give out tracks or toothbrushes or pennies… kids are looking for the master loot of candy. Put yourself in their shoes.

8. Join the Community If your community has key events, join them and invite some neighbors to go with you (then get to know their stories along the way). Our area has a trick or treating event

2. Think of the Parents Consider having some hot apple cider and pumpkin bread or muffins out for the parents who are bringing their little kiddos around the block. Make your entry-way inviting so

on a main street where all the businesses give out candy, the firemen give tours of the fire engines, etc. We go with a group of friends to this each year and consistently meet more people to reach out to.

they want to come closer and hang for a bit.

9. Serve with Us 3. Be Present Don’t hide out all night. Come out to the door or hang out on the porch, and if they stop to have some cider, get to know their names and where they live in the neighborhood.

4. Be Encouraging

Bridge Kids will have several area homes equipped with the best candy, games and bounce houses.

Consider

volunteering your time to make those homes be the best that they can be!

BE PRAYERFUL Ask for the Spirit to lead, guide and work

Tell the kids you love their costumes and to have a great night. Practice building others up with words.

10. Pay Attention Ask the Spirit to open your eyes and ears to the real needs

5. Party

around you.

If you’re really into it, you may want to throw a pre-trick or treating party. Provide dinner and drinks. Then, send the

around you.

Then reconvene with the parents and kids together to examine all of the loot (kids love to show their parents and other kids the loot).

12. Open Doors Ask the Spirit for open doors for new relationships and

6. Learn the Stories

gospel conversations.

If you are out trick or treating with the kiddos or staying back with the other parents, or simply answering the door, ask questions…get to know their stories. Pay attention to their hearts and their needs. Look for opportunities to serve them later. Isn’t it possible that by getting to know their story and about their life you may also be presented with a “real” opportunity to discuss Jesus Christ? THEBRIDGEAG.ORG / 9
