Serving with Faith:

An Interview with The Bridge Church Veterans Meet our Veterans

Gary Stephens Air Force

J U LY

Angie Grisham Coast Guard

4

Karen Douthit Air Force

2018

Why did you join and where did you serve?

Gary Stephens: I was originally drafted by the Army, but went straight to an Air Force recruiter and requested to join the Air Force. I served in Missouri, California, and Colorado before I left for Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Vietnam, where I was assigned for four years. Angie Grishan: I chose the Coast Guard because I wanted to save lives; I wanted to serve something bigger than myself. I was stationed in Cape May, New Jersey and then transferred to OKC. Karen Douthit: I think God put me in the Air Force. He knew me and He knew my heart. I loved serving others! I was 30 years old and a divorced mother of two daughters when I had a meeting with an Army recruiter and was soon on my way to San Antonio, TX for Basic Training for the US Air Force. I served at Rogers Air National Guard Base for 24 years and was eventually promoted to E7, Master Sergeant, Training Supervisor. After I was injured, I was classified as a disabled American Veteran and became a Chaplain for the American Legion Post 353, Mustang, OK.

Why did you love serving your country?

G: There was great pride in serving my country and doing what was needed to protect my home. Also, I got to travel (gulf, west coast, east coast, Vietnam) and saw what war was like and understood that side of life. A: I was working behind the scenes, preparing learning materials for those serving. I was able to help men and women in the field that were saving people’s life. It was bigger than me, bigger than my personal dreams, and it improved everybody. K: I loved where I found myself because I had prayed for God to use me. I had no idea how to fill the longing I had, but God know right where to put me.

What lessons did you learn while you served and how can you apply that to your daily life?

G: I learned that I had to live consistently for God. He gives a peace that only God gives and the knowledge that you are always in his hands, regardless of what you may be facing. A: You have to do everything with excellence and you can be pushed further than you ever dreamed for a cause you believe in. I learned I was stronger than I thought. If I put my mind to it, I could do anything. K: Always listen to advice from your superiors and compare it to what the still, small voice of God is saying. Ask God to reveal himself by giving you clarity. Talk to Him everyday and ask Him what “we” are going to do today.

Based off your time of service in the military, what would you want to tell someone about the value of serving?

G: Serving taught me a lot about discipline, it helped me grow up and understand that I needed to stand for my own beliefs, because so many others around you won’t. Don’t miss an opportunity to witness. A: I think everybody should serve. It creates a selfless attitude and pushes you to see the price that was paid for the freedoms so often taken for granted. While in the military, I had to decide if Christianity was my mom’s religion or mine; I had to claim my relationship with God as my own. K: God knew me, He knew my strengths and weaknesses. Nothing makes me feel better than doing something to help someone else! God knew that because He made me and led me to it! Trust in Him and He will lead you to what you’re called to do.

All around us are incredible individuals who have served our country, our communities, and our churches. During this time of the year, don’t forget to give thanks to those amazing people and honor their stories! 5
