RODNEY & KATE Church Planting Pastors
A couple of weeks ago, Pastor McNabb introduced to the congregation a young family who God has laid on their hearts to plant a church in the Uptown area of OKC. Rodney and Kate Wardwell are excited about beginning this new season of their lives and want to invite you to partner with them in prayer as they step out in faith on this new adventure.
we would do student ministry for as long as we possibly could. However, several years ago, God began to speak to us that He was going to bring us a new assignment. We knew that a change was coming. Little did we know, God was taking us outside our current box and had much different plans for us. One day in April of 2013, while we were driving through Oklahoma City, God spoke to my heart that this was our city and that we were to plant a church here. God has confirmed it time and again in our hearts, and He continues to confirm it through friends and mentors in our lives.
Pulse: Tell us about you and your family. Rodney: Kate and I have been married for 13 years. We have two kids, Kierstyn who is 10 and Ryan, 5. Both Kate and I graduated from Central Bible College in 2002. We have served as student pastors for over 12 years in Kansas, Indiana and most recently Enid, Oklahoma. Kate has owned and ran her own graphic design company, “Kindred Creative” for 9 years now.
Pulse: Why do you believe God has placed Oklahoma City on your hearts? Rodney: For the past two years or so, God has been burdening our hearts for OKC. We love the people, and we are drawn to this city. Neither Kate nor I are from Oklahoma, but we can’t imagine living anywhere else. This is home, and we really connect to people here. The more time we spend in Uptown and on NW 23rd street, the more God breaks our hearts for the people there, and the more we know that these are the people we are called to serve and do life with.
Pulse: Choosing to plant a church is a big decision, how did you decide this is what you wanted to do? Rodney: It’s been quite a process for us. We always thought 4 / THEBRIDGEAG.ORG
Pulse: Describe the type of people who are living in the Uptown area of OKC? Rodney: The Uptown area is extremely diverse ethnically and culturally - it’s a melting pot. The median age is 29 1/2 years old. The people who live in and around NW 23rd street are very creative, and with the restoration taking place down in that area, you can see their creativity coming alive. The challenge that is before us, is to blend those ethnic and cultural lines and to help redeem all of this creativity for the Lord. Pulse: Where will you hold services? Rodney: As we are continuing to look for a building to meet, we are considering any place with a large enough meeting space for adults, and a safe, clean and size-able area for kids ministry as well. Although we do not have a building at this time, we are not going to sit around and wait. We are calling ourselves a “church without walls”. While it would be nice, and we can’t wait to have a location, we do not need brick and mortar to the body of Christ. So, we are already planning outreaches into the area. Pulse: What is your vision for The Bridge | OKC ? Rodney: Our vision as The Bridge OKC is to see lives changed and fulfilled through the power of Jesus Christ and to link arms with Him as He renews our city. Pulse: How can we pray for you regarding this church plant? Rodney: First, The Bridge can join us in praying for the right location. Secondly, we are praying for divine appointments and strategic relationships. As we continue to move forward, we are finding that the spiritual warfare is intense. Anything that we attempt to do to impact the kingdom of God is often met with opposition. With that in mind, a third prayer need is for our launch team and for our families as we walk through this season. Finally, please pray for the people in the Uptown area, that God would begin to prepare their hearts for the message of hope and love that we are going to bring through the gospel.
