14 / 15 SEASON
As a class, pick one fairytale everyone can agree on. Discuss the characters and the plot of the story. Have students volunteer the information that they know. Explain that all stories have a beginning, middle, and end. For example: • The stories start with a person, in a place, who has a problem. (Beginning) • The hero then goes on a journey to solve his problem. The hero will be faced with bad guys! (Middle) • Then, there is a happy ending! The hero has his happy ending, and the bad guys are punished. (End) Choose 2-3 more stories that were mentioned earlier. As a class, break them down into their beginnings, middles, and endings. Ask the students to name some of the characters in the stories you are discussing. Introduce the concept of “stock characters” to your students.
Stock Character: a character who is based on a type of person often found in books. (Princess, handsome prince, evil stepmother, fairy godmother, talking animal/magical being, villain, etc.)

Lesson Two: Improvisation Games! Lesson at a Glance Objectives: To introduce students to improvisation, and have students Practice Improvisational Skills themselves. Materials: Paper “tiles” with nouns and verbs written on each piece, blanket, ball. Standards Addressed: CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.RL .K.10, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.K. 1, CCSS:ELALITERACY.SL.K.4 , CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.1 .1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.1 . 4, CCSS:ELALITERACY.SL.1. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.2. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL. 2. 1 Time: 30 Minutes
Explain that the actors from Impro Theatre are going to create a brand new fairytale story, right in front of our eyes!
Share the “RULES FOR IMPROVISATION” with your students. Explain that all actors follow these three rules when they are improvising! (see bubble)
RULES OF IMPROVISATION! 1. They LISTEN! 2. They say “YES, AND…” 3. They WORK TOGETHER
Have students explore these three rules by playing these improvisational games:
1. They LISTEN: Telephone - Whisper a phrase into one student’s ear and ask him or her to listen very carefully. - Then ask that child to pass the message to the next child in the class, making sure that each one listens carefully to the message and repeats it exactly to his or her neighbor. - Continue until the message has been passed through the entire class. - Ask the last child to reveal the message. - See if the message has changed from its original form, and discuss the importance of listening.

Define Improvisation: performing without a script; creating in the spur of the moment. When actors are improvising, they are making the story up while they are onstage.

3. They WORK TOGETHER: Ball on a Blanket - Each student takes an edge of a blanket and stretches it tight. - Place a ball at the center of the blanket. - Task students with getting the ball from one side of the room to the other, keeping it in the center of the blanket.

2. They say “YES, AND…”: Group Storytelling - Create individual word “tiles” that the students can stick on the board or line up on the desks. Each tile should have a noun or verb written on it. - Invite the group to participate in group storytelling. - Have students select 1 tile each. - One student starts by using their noun or verb to make a sentence. The next student adds to the story by creating a following sentence using their noun or verb. The key is to make each sentence make sense within the story. - Continue building the story as a class until every student has added a sentence.

Lesson Three: Music Matching Lesson at a Glance Objectives: To have students explore the various feelings that music can evoke, and how that might connect to various stock characters. Materials: Computer, Internet Access, a way to play music for the class. Standards Addressed: CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.K. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.K. 4, CCSS:ELALITERACY.L.K. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.1 .1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.1 . 4, CCSS:ELALITERACY.L.1. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.2. 1, CCSS:ELA-LITERACY.SL.2. 4, CCSS:ELALITERACY.L. 2. 1 Time: 30 Minutes
Listen the part or all of “Peter and the Wolf” as a class. You can find a recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ueGfjBKbiE (Starts at 2:30. Make sure that students only LISTEN to the story, and do not watch the visuals.) Discuss the piece of music. How could you tell what was going on? Listen to each of the following six selections on YouTube. (Make sure to only listen, with no visuals.) 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5Q5FFWRxCE 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOk8Tm815lE 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1z4JfxFb6c 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdqjcMmjeaA (at 0:23) 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450 6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cfvnlqnFck After listening to each of the selections, ask your students: • How does this song make you feel? • What pictures are in your imagination when you listen to this music? • Does it make you want to move? How? • What are some words you could use to describe the music? • What ‘color’ is the music? Explain that the Calder Quartet will be improvising music along with the actors. The way that they improvise is by matching the TONE of the action onstage. For example, a sad moment might have slow, low music. An exciting moment might have quick, high music. Activity: Music Matching Listen to part of each piece above again. Ask students to match those pieces of music to the different stock characters discussed in the previous lessons. • (Examples: Princess, handsome prince, villain, stepmother, magical being, talking animal.) Theater Traditions! The Broad Stage is a beautiful theater that was inspired by Italian “horseshoe” theaters in Italy. Theater shows, dance, film, operas, musicals, and symphonies are performed here. The Broad Stage has 499 seats and you will be sitting in one of them! The theater is a very special place and, in our culture, it has some special traditions.
Tradition: A way of behaving or doing something that have been used by a society or group of people for a long time
FUN AUDIENCE TRADITIONS!
Watch and Listen! Many things are happening on the stage and you want to make sure to catch every moment. Live theater is different than watching a movie. What you see on the stage is the ONE and ONLY time you’ll see that exact performance because theater changes a little bit each time. You can’t rewind and see a part over again. Audience Participation! In the theater, the audience is VERY important. The actors on the stage can see and hear you. In our culture, you can laugh at funny parts and clap at the end of a scene that you really enjoyed. It’s important to find a comfortable seat and sit still so the actors can concentrate on giving you a GREAT performance. Talk After! Talking to your friends is an important part of seeing a show at a theater. There are special times to talk about the show. Before the performance you can talk about what you’re excited about seeing or what you are wondering about. If there is an intermission (a break between acts) you can talk about what you have seen and what you anticipate is coming next. After the show, is a great time to talk to your friends, teachers, or parents about what you just saw. You can share what you liked or disliked and ask them to share what they thought about the show too!
FUN THEATER TRADITIONS! Break a leg! It is considered bad luck to wish someone “good luck” in a theatre so instead we say “break a leg!” to the actors before they perform. Keep the ghosts away! One silly tradition is that the theatre should always be closed one night a week to give the ghosts a chance to perform their own plays. This is usually on a Monday night which is nice because it gives everyone a day off after they’ve performed all weekend!

Dress Up! Everyone is welcome at the theater no matter what they are wearing but it can be really fun to “dress” for the theater. It’s a very special place so it’s fun to wear very special clothes.
