Flood Mansion bathrooms receive major renovation after 70 years.

The second and third floor bathrooms of the Flood Mansion were renovated over the summer for the first time in almost 80 years.

“Those bathrooms had not been touched since 1940 when we moved into this building,” Plant Operations Director Geoff De Santis said. “There have been some minor renovations but the major overhaul, the plumbing, the fixtures, the flooring, hadn’t been done since we moved in.”

The new bathrooms were a much needed upgrade for the student body, as most of the time, at least one stall was always out of order, according to senior Lauren Wasserman.

Stalls now have automatic

flush toilets, and sinks come with automatic soap dispensers and hand dryers.

“We installed a Dyson hand dryer on the second floor as a test to see how that works in a school environment to hopefully reduce the amount of paper towels that we are using,” De Santis said.

In addition to new fixtures, the stalls are six and a half inches larger wider and a foot deeper than before, according to De Santis.

“Changing in them for sports will hopefully be easier since you’re not crammed into a tiny little stall,” junior Amelia Estes said.

Many of the stalls clogged frequently because the Flood Mansion was built 1886 for a family, not a school. Clogging is commonly caused by flushing unnecessarily large amounts of toilet paper or feminine hygiene products.

“You always run the risk of clogging with anyone putting too much product down, whether it’s feminine products or toilet paper — the hole is only a certain diameter,” De Santis said.

“I’m confident that the amount of clogging we’ve had in the past is going to be reduced if not altogether removed as long as the proper amount of product is used.”

A coed Senior Retreat takes place on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at St. Dorothy’s Rest in Occidental, providing the first all-class experience since Costa Rica in the Sophomore Year. All grades will have single-sex retreats during the spring semester.

New food service comes to campus

n enticing aroma coming from the basement cafeteria can be attributed to the school’s change in food provider, to SAGE Dining Services.

“We are not a cafeteria, we are a dining facility,” Food Service Director Richard Legge said.

“Our food is comparable to any restaurant that you would go into. All our vegetables and fruit are organic when possible. Everything is made from scratch, and we try to buy locally.”

Lower form will have a modified menu that is geared towards younger kids, allowing for older students and faculty to enjoy a more diverse menu, according to Legge.

Main line meals are priced at $7.75, while the salad and deli bar items are priced by weight.

Grab and go prices range by product, although will be reasonable, according to Legge.

“The main line is a meat and a vegetarian protein, a starch, two vegetables and a soup,” Legge said. “We have ‘Pacific time’ which is our Asian cuisine bar, and grab and go, with assorted salads, parfaits, burgers and fries, assorted healthy chips and whole fruits.”

Theology teacher Paul Pryor Lorentz, along with other fac-

ulty members, ate lunch from the new provider everyday last week. Even as a vegetarian, Lorentz says he always had a good number of options to choose from.

“There was a good, tasty rice that felt autumnal with squash or pumpkin in it and tasty spices, and there was a crispy tofu dish with really good sauces,” Lorentz said. “I didn’t have to piece together a bunch of sides to feel satisfied. I felt well-fed and it’s been quality food.”

Breakfast service at the Broadway campus is planned to start September 11, with meals costing $7, according to Legge.

“The breakfast has been really good, I had some of the best french toast I think I’ve ever had,” Pryor Lorentz said. “They had an omelette bar which I didn’t take advantage of. I don’t know if this is going to be indicative of the whole year, but this made the faculty feel pretty excited about the new food.”

SAGE focuses on tailoring menus to each individual school’s needs, according to the company’s website.

“If anybody has any suggestions, comments or anything else, our door’s always open,” Legge said. “We’re only here because of you, we know that. My job is to make you guys happy, and that’s what I want to do.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap election June 8, hoping to fill more Conservative seats in Parliament as she moved the country into “Brexit” negotiations.

But, the Conservative Party lost influence as the Labour Party gained traction — resulting in a hung Parliament and more complex negotiations ahead.

North Korea has continued tests of its nuclear weapons, launching missiles that some say may reach as far as Hawaii and Alaska.

President Donald Trump responded quickly, saying that U.S. military forces are “locked and loaded” and ready to release “fire and fury” if the country continues to make threats.

A “Unite the Right” rally gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia, protesting the removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee, turned violent when a man drove a car into a group of peaceful counterdemonstrators, resulting in the death of a woman.

President Trump was widely criticized for his response to the tragedy, blaming both sides for the violence.

“Wonder Woman” grossed over $800 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing super hero movie of all time.

The July-released “Girls Trip” became the first all-black production to gross over $100 million at the box office.

The film’s director, producers, writers and stars are all black.
