THE BRYAN MUSEUM 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
THE BRYAN MUSEUM
02
Dear Friends, Thanks to your steadfast support, The Bryan Museum has claimed an important role in preserving and showcasing the dynamic history of Texas and the American West. 2019 was a tremendous year of growth and accomplishment for the Museum. Membership and attendance doubled, programming expanded exponentially, and our exhibitions earned increasing recognition for exhibiting our storied past. With our incomparable collection, the Museum is blazing a new trail in education, telling the amazing, highadventure stories of the diverse men and women who came before, and inspiring new generations of adults and students. 2019 also saw the expansion of the collection both through targeted purchases and donations of scores of rare and unique objects including the only remaining original Borden Map of the City of Houston. Education remains our primary commitment and has always been at the heart of what we do. Our visitors journey back in time, not to relive the past but to gain inspiration, perspective, and understanding about themselves and the future. Last year, the Museum presented a wide range of programs, community festivals, workshops, and musical performances. We honored noted Texas author, Stephen Harrigan with our Distinguished Speaker Award and hosted special speakers whose topics included cowboy culture, battlefield archeology, the privateer Jean Lafitte, Emperor Maximillian, Sam Houston, and much more. In addition, drop in visitors were greeted with gallery demonstrations nearly every weekend of the year. Each of these events helped bring history alive in new and unexpected ways. While last year was a year of significant growth and major accomplishments, 2020 poses unexpected challenges. We have become a leaner and more nimble organization, delivering new programs through the use of technology and social media. With your help, the Museum will continue to play a vital role in education because it is through history that we understand the whole of everything and the importance of our connection to place and to one another. We are deeply grateful for your continued support! We hope you will remain an integral part of The Bryan Museum family and please enjoy our 2019 Annual Report.

HISTORY The Bryan is a young institution, opening our doors just five years ago. With a nationally significant collection of art and artifacts that span 12,000 years of history related to Texas and the American West, we bring to life the diverse stories of the men and women who lived in the West - a story that continues to captivate and inspire people around the globe. Our opportunities lie in the strength of our collection, our reputation in the field, our networking capabilities, and the use of technology to share our resources and multiply our reach.

MISSION The Bryan presents the history of Texas and the American West in a comprehensive and inspirational way, creating informed and engaged citizens who are better equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century. By transforming historical education through compelling stories and a world-class collection, we elevate the importance of our shared history as a source of wisdom and guidance for our institutions, our communities, and ourselves.

EDUCATION Education is at the heart of what we do. With programs that inspire a sense of discovery and reflection, we challenge individuals to see themselves as part of the drama of history. The Museum is significantly enhancing student tours to make them more impactful by creating new field trip and workshop opportunities to support all K-12 students and teachers at all grade levels. We held our first Teacher Open House in 2019 and established a Teacher Advisory Group to better support the efforts of social studies instruction in the classroom. In 2019, we continued Free Days for Families, with activities that encourage drop-in visitation involving the entire family. The Museum expanded its offerings for adults and under-served audiences through a wide range of demonstrations, films, lectures, and hands-on activities.
THE BRYAN MUSEUM
SHARING THE MUSEUM VIRTUALLY The Bryan continues to offer our popular virtual reality tours to reach schools who, because of distance or funding, cannot visit. Using 3-D technology, four, five-minute video segments use the collection to tell essential stories from Texas history along with lesson plans intended to facilitate discussion. This initiative, funded by a generous donor, was developed in cooperation with the Texas State Historical Association and was successfully piloted in seven schools across the state.

1878 The Galveston Orphans Home was founded on October 20, 1878, by Galveston journalist George B. Dealey, who, with Mrs. E. M. Arnold, served as first director and established the orphanage in a rented house as the Island City Protestant Orphan Asylum.
1893
The city of Galveston was bequeathed funds by philanthropist Henry Rosenberg to construct a modern orphanage built in the Gothic Revival style by architect Alfred Muller.
1900
The new public building was to be in use for only five years as the 1900 Hurricane destroyed the structure almost completely.
1900
A charity event hosted by newspaper publisher Willam Randolph Hearst at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, raised funds for the restoration of the orphanage. Lieutenant Colonel Nelson A. Miles delivered the opening address. The audience included author Samuel Longhorn Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, and then Texas Governor, Joseph B. Sayers.
THE BRYAN MUSEUM
1902 The Galveston Orphans Home was rededicated on March 30, 1902 with much celebration. The orphanage operated in the building until 1984 when it became the Children’s Center and moved to another location.
1988 In 1988, the home became a private residence for almost 18 years and then was vacant for almost a decade.
2013 In October 2013, J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan purchased the old Galveston Orphans Home.
2015 After a careful restoration of the historic structure, The Bryan Museum opened in June 2015. With 20,000 square feet of exhibit space and lush, manicured grounds, the Museum has become a Texas destination.

2019 ACQUISITIONS CARTES DES CÔTES DU GOLFE DU MEXIQUE,1800 This landmark map of Texas, Florida and the Gulf Coast, is based upon the 1799 Carta Esferica, commissioned by Bernardo de Galvez. Its most significant milestone was the discovery of Galveston Bay in 1785. Galveston Bay is shown on the present map. The coastline configuration in the Carta Esferica established the prototype for the mapping of Texas and the U. S. Gulf Coast.
KARL BODMER MANDAN
STUDY
In 1832, Swiss artist Karl Bodmer accompanied Prince Maximilian of Wied on a scientific journey that took them up the Missouri River to the village of the Mandan Indians. Bodmer documented their year-long stay with many drawings and watercolors. This pencil sketch is of Mandan women in winter clothes.

SPANISH PISTOL This Spanish made pistol features a decorative motif of Saint George and the Dragon, patron saint of Catalonia. The pistol was probably made in Ripoli, Catalonia around 1650. A significant number of pistols made at Ripoll were shipped to the American colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries.
FLINTLOCK RIFLE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS
This 1840 Tryon rifle was made in Philadelphia and shipped to Texas. The new Republic ordered 1500 of these rifles between 18391840 to arm the troops against Mexican retaliation. Only 860 were delivered to Galveston. Many of these rifles were carried in the failed Texas-Santa Fe Expedition of 1841 and were seized by the Governor of New Mexico, making this an extremely rare survivor.

PLAN OF THE CITY OF HOUSTON GAIL BORDEN 1836
The Allen brothers, founders of Houston, used this map, created by Gail Borden and Moses Lapham, to illustrate the size and location of the lots, blocks and streets offered for sale in the proposed City of Houston. This is the only surviving copy of the map known to exist. This copy was given to Sam Houston along with a gift of one city block. Houston is said to have hung the map on the wall of his office. Following his death, the map passed to his son, A.J. Houston.
CATTLE BRAND REGISTER 1875 This hand written record of 6,000 cattle brands, belonged to one of the most famous cattlemen in Texas, John H. Slaughter. Slaughter's San Antonio Ranch Company drove cattle along the Chisholm Trail along with his partner, James Lowe. Lowe settled along the Frio River in 1858 and J. Frank Dobie wrote about his cattle activities in A Vaquero of the Brush Country.
