The Buck n’ Ball Award The Buck n’ Ball Award recognizes distinguished individuals with roots in the American West who have demonstrated extraordinary resolve and history-changing achievement in their careers. The award pays homage to an unknown Texan who showed incredible tenacity and determination during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836). Relentless rains caused Texas roads to fill with mud as Antonio López de Santa Anna led his Mexican Army into the region to punish rebelling Texans. Throngs of panicked residents began to flee east, among them a wagon carrying a mother and two daughters became stuck in a muddy rut in the road. Other evacuees passed the bogged down vehicle in their haste, but Emily Austin Bryan and her family stopped to lend a hand. After unsuccessfully digging around the wheels of the entrenched wagon, Bryan proposed attaching her own mules to the vehicle in an effort to pull it from the mud. The fierce woman declined the offer. Thanking Bryan for her efforts, she determinedly drew out a bullwhip, cracked it over the heads of her own team and cried, “Rise up Buck and Ball and do your best.” And so, they did, and the lady was able to continue on her journey to safety. Generations of Bryan family members have used the phrase, “Rise up Buck and Ball and do your best” and the memory of this remarkable Texas woman as a rallying cry in challenging times. Designed by the founder of The Bryan Museum, J.P. Bryan, and sculpted by local artist, Doug McLean, this award pays tribute to like-minded pioneers of today.

Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Bryan

The Bryan Museum was established in 2015 to share a nationally significant collection of 70,00 works of art and artifacts spanning 12,000 years of history related to Texas and the American West. The Museum brings to life the diverse stories of the individuals who lived in the West, through six galleries devoted to Native peoples, Spanish exploration, the Frontier, the Texas Republic, Statehood and Beyond, and Masters of Texas Art. The story of the West continues to captivate and inspire people everywhere. Through a wide range of educational history and literacy programs, workshops, and exhibitions, we ask guests to consider the fundamental question: “Why are we where we are, and how did we get here?” We explore the role that history plays in providing context for our lives, offering students of all ages a chance to experience the stories of yesterday and write the history of tomorrow.
