think it is becoming increasingly hard for anyone to deny that the weather is becoming more extreme, more often. Even those who until recently would claim that statistics were being fudged by environmentalists and that climate change is a myth, have had to change their argument into “yeah, but China, what can we do?” I have no idea, but it would seem logical that “something” is a good place to start.

Personally, I was incredibly lucky with the June storms. It would turn out that people I know who live 20 kilometres to the east and west of my village suffered significant damage, but short of some heavy rain and a few gusts of wind, we barely noticed the storms of June 20th. The next day, it just so happened that I had a meeting in central Dordogne and set off early without checking my phone or listening to the news.

There aren't really any trunk roads that cross the department diagonally, so journeys of this nature are a series of small

back roads that criss-cross through bucolic towns. It takes ages, but there is always something beautiful around the corner. On this particular morning, as I crossed into the Dordogne from the northwest, I suddenly came across a stretch of road that was coated in greenery and had branches piled up along each side. I had to stamp on the breaks and slalom my way through.

I must admit, my first instinct was that someone had been tending to the trees that lined the road with no regard for the safety of others. Quickly, however, a sense of unease washed over me and I realised that something was not quite right.... the trees had no leaves.

As I slowed further, my mind flicked back to a storm warning I had read the day before and it became obvious that something very powerful had passed through, taking no prisoners. The next ten minutes of driving was a solemn affair.

Cars, roofs, buildings, trees, crops... everything had been damaged. Entire fields of what were once wheat or sunflower resembled a war zone. All that

remained was an endless sea of broken stumps protruding through the debris.

Within 15 minutes, I was “out the other side” and while I became more aware of isolated areas that had suffered from flooding or hail, it was nothing on the scale of the devastation north-west of Ribérac.

I had never seen anything like it before. Although of course I have. On the television. But when you are faced with it, the sheer scale of damage is hard to comprehend. I have since seen plenty of evidence of the damage on social media and in the huge media coverage and spoken to several advertisers who were affected.

Sadly, events such as these are happening more and more frequently and while the vast majority of people are ultimately covered by their insurance, it can take months or years to get everything put straight and my heart always breaks for the farmers who lose everything overnight and who often do not get compensated.

It wasn't just freak hailstorms we saw in June, however. There was also an intense canicule and on that occasion I found myself in the eye of the storm.

The heat topped out at 42 degrees where I live, an insane temperature for mid-June.

What's more, some friends of mine own a wedding venue and I had promised to help out with tables, chairs and various other tasks on what turned out to be

the hottest day of the heatwave.

I do not cope well with the heat at the best of times and as soon as the temperature gets beyond 20, any light exercise will see me mopping my brow shall we say. Playing sport as a kid, the teams would always be “shirts vs skins”, but no mater who the captains were, or how good I was at the game in question, there was an unwritten rule that I was always the first pick for shirts, simply because everyone would refuse to play against me on skins... let's just say I was a bit of a slippery eel.

Which means I have to be careful to stay hydrated on hot days. I swear that between my mouth and my back is some kind of watering can system that bypasses my stomach. On the day of the wedding I drank six litres of water, one litre of Coke Zero (and a cheeky beer)

and I can count the number of times I visited the toilet on one finger!

By the evening, I honestly felt drunk; lightheaded and struggling with basic motor skills. I know that for some people it is a case of the hotter the better, but if days like that were the norm for any length of time each year, I would give serious consideration to moving further north.

Anyway, as I write this, the sun is out, there is a gentle breeze blowing and it is an absolutely perfect 24 degrees, so I am going to go and sit under a tree with a cold drink...

French appetite threatens frog species Sleepy pilot causes potential terrorist scare

uch like the Brits' love of roast beef, the French penchant for frogs legs is somewhat of a cliché, but this country's hunger for cuisses de grenouille may be driving several species to the brink of extinction. Europe imports a staggering 200 million, mostly wild, frogs each year, the vast majority of which are consumed in France and Belgium.

Much of this trade comes from Indonesia, Turkey and Albania and a recent study has warned that the Anatolian water frog could be extinct in Turkey by 2032 because of over-exploitation, while other species such as the Albanian water frog are also now under threat. Indonesia has recently put a hold on exports of their native Javan frog, a move that conservationists believe is in response to significant population depletion.

“In Indonesia, and now also in Turkey and Albania, large frog species are dwindling in the wild, one after the other, causing a fatal domino effect for species conservation,” explained Dr Sandra Altherr, the cofounder of the conservation charity Pro Wildlife. “If the plundering for the European market continues, it’s highly likely that we will see more serious declines of wild frog popula-

tions and, potentially, extinctions in the next decade.”

“Frogs play a central role in the ecosystem as insect killers – and where frogs disappear, the use of toxic pesticides is increasing,” said Charlotte Nithart, president of the French NGO Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), which co-wrote the paper.

“Hence, the frogs legs trade has direct consequences not only for the frogs themselves, but for biodiversity and ecosystem health as a whole.”

At first glance, it would appear that it is actually the Belgians who bear the most guilt, despite being more famous for eating chips, choco-

late and waffles: around 70% of European imports arrive in the land of Tintin. Closer inspection, however, reveals that most of these are then sent on to France, which also directly imports a further 17%.

“A shift in public consciousness needs to take place in Europe to realise that the burden of these declines in amphibian populations is being placed on poorer countries because of demand in wealthier ones,” explained Jennifer Luedtke from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “We need to talk about sustainable use... and whether that’s even possible.” ■

tired Italian pilot triggered a full-scale terror alert in French skies after failing to respond to air traffic communications for more than 10 minutes. The ITA Airways flight was en route from New York to Rome when operators at Marseille airport were unable to contact the pilot, prompting them to instigate hijacking protocols and prepare to scramble two fighter jets.

After being made aware of the developing issue, Italian authorities then contacted ITA Airways’ central command centre, which also tried to reach the pilot, firstly through a satellite phone and then through ACARS - a satellite communication tool used between pilots in the air and ground staff. After ten minutes, both the captain and co-pilot finally responded.

During the incident, the plane's co-pilot had been asleep, taking an authorised nap within the context of a “controlled rest” period. The captain should have been at the controls, but after initially claiming that his communications system had malfunctioned, a subsequent enquiry revealed “inconsistencies” with his story and he was later found to have fallen asleep in the cockpit; he has since been fired by the airline.

A spokesperson for ITA Airways said that passengers were never in danger at any point as the plane’s automatic pilot system was in place. The plane never diverted from its planned flight route during the entire incident and landed safely at Rome Fiumicino airport twenty minutes ahead of schedule. ■

The right to abortion in France is already protected in a 1975 law relating to the voluntary termination of pregnancy - the so-called Veil Law - part of a wider legal framework that decriminalised abortion.

Laws can be repealed and changed, however, and those backing the current bill argue that enshrining the right to abortion in the country's Constitution will make it much harder for any future government to alter it. The Veil Law gave women the automatic right to an abortion up

to the 10th week of pregnancy. This was extended to 12 weeks in 2001 and then to 14 weeks in March of this year.

Any challenge to abortion rights is seen as most likely to come from the right wing of French politics.

The far right National Rally has long been opposed to abortion, but the party's leader Marine Le Pen has presented herself as a defender of women's rights in recent years and has backed the status quo. While the party did vote against the move to 14 months earlier this year, one of their MPs, Philippe Ballard, was recently quoted as saying “We don't touch the Veil Law”. ■

Bill proposed to protect Overnight pool rescue women's abortion rights for Dordogne cow

ordogne firefighters spent an entire night last month rescuing a trapped cow from a confused couple's swimming pool. The drama began when the owners of the pool were about to head to bed at their house in Saint-Pompon to the east of Bergerac and heard a loud mooing coming from nearby. A quick check outside revealed the bizarre sight of the noisy cow seemingly enjoying a midnight dip, and prompted a panicked call to the pompiers.

With the cow unable to escape under its own steam, rescuers first emptied the pool before trying to build a ramp out of hay bales and entice the 600 kg beast out. These efforts proved fruitless and at 3 am a vet was called to administer a sedative to calm the animal down. One of the volunteer firefighters was then able to borrow a telescopic forklift and the cow was finally lifted to safety using a sling as the sun came up.

While the cow emerged safe and sound and was able to rejoin her sisters at a nearby farm, the swimming pool did not escape unscathed. The ruminant's hooves had ripped the lining in several places and what remained of the floor was covered in an unpleasant mix of mud, hay and cowpats, leaving the owners with a difficult call to make to their insurers.

“They are a bit put out,” explained the town's mayor, Carole Henry, with admirable understatement. ■

emergency numbers were set up by insurance companies and the department began to count the cost of the damage. A report from the chamber of agriculture stated that 8,500 hectares of crops had been affected, causing €15 million of damage. This included 3,000 hectares of cereal, 2,000 of sunflowers and colza, and a further 2,000 of maize, all at a time of shortages of these staples due to the war in Ukraine.

“Ribérac, a town crushed,” wrote one resident on Twitter. “I lost everything in 10 minutes... no more house, no more car, but safe and sound thanks to my neighbours.”

“Everything outside has been ransacked,” another local wrote on the pages of the Météo France website. “We have no more garden. Flowers, vegetables, fruit... all gone. Chicken coop destroyed, severely damaged shutters, gate and fencing also damaged.”

“It's apocalyptic, I've never seen anything like it,” said Nicolas Platon, mayor of Ribérac who described seeing hail stones the size of tennis balls. “Every car that was outside has been affected. In Ribérac we have 2,700 households, and not one of them was spared.” The only good news to emerge in the aftermath was confirmation that no one had been injured locally during the storm. ■

ourteen communes in the Dordogne have called on the State to declare a natural disaster after violent hail storms caused widespread damage to property and farmland. A number of storms hit France during June, but those that ripped through the region on June 20th were among the most violent, and the north-west of the Dordogne was one of the worst affected areas.

If the government declares a catastrophe naturelle, central funding will become available to compensate individuals and businesses for damage caused. This does not usually cover damage from hail and wind – this should be covered by household insurance – but will activate compensation for flood damage.

Much of the damage in the area around Ribérac was caused by a giant hailstorm that destroyed houses and cars, stripped trees of their leaves and flattened crops.

Hail stones the size of golf balls not only damaged windows and roof tiles on thousands of buildings, but a number saw their roofs completely collapse under the barrage. There was also extensive damage caused by flash flooding, and falling trees blocked roads and brought down electricity pylons.

Eymet Cricket Club mourns ex-president's death Ian Brown, the former President of Eymet Cricket Club and the Chairman of ACCSO (Association des Clubs de Cricket du Sud-Ouest) lost his battle with liver cancer and died on Sunday 5th June. ictor Frankl contends that death is what gives meaning to life. For the community of those who knew Ian Brown that is not how it feels. It feels raw, brutal, and desperately unfair. Une vie inachevée.

Ian Brown was a generous man with a good heart. In preparation for Ian’s cremation service parole I contacted many who had known him and they recounted spontaneously Ian’s many kindnesses towards them.

Perhaps his greatest kindness was the fact that he was diagnosed with a pathway to a terminal outcome in August of 2021 and despite four previous years of recovery from major surgical interventions Ian’s natural instinct was to shield and protect others; that took courage and bravery. Ian was set to manage events his way according to his timetable.

Ian joined Eymet Cricket Club upon his arrival in France, like many expats because he loved the sport and wanted to be involved. A former IT Specialist, his familiarity with spreadsheets made him a natural Administrator and Fixtures Secretary. The highlight of his playing career was being part of the famous 3, who became known as the 200 Club. This was not due to scoring a double century but being part of a 3-man team fielding in the covers with Glyn Taylor and Paul Bradford.

Their combined ages approached 200!

In 2015, Ian succeeded Tim Smith as the President of Eymet Cricket Club and in the subsequent years skilfully continued the transition of the club from a group of ageing expats to a team mixed with talented young lads, who call themselves ‘les gars’, but hail from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, all proud cricketing nations. In 2017, Ian became Secretary and subsequently President of ACCSO - Association des Clubs de Cricket du Sud-Ouest.

We find ourselves taken back by the suddenness of Ian’s passing and a strong sense of wrongness in its timing. I always thought of Ian hap-

piest pottering in his garden, looking after the needs of his chickens or chatting away to Marie Christine, his partner, oblivious to the comings and goings of the world around them.

Ian was 72, his passions were foreign travel, cricket and wine. Ian had a winning smile, liked to win, and embraced the competitive nature of men. It is said that you “don’t know you have lost until it’s gone”.

Ian lost his deserved comfortable retirement. We, going forward, will need to learn to recover from the loss of his considerable input into the smooth running of cricket in the South-West of France. ■ Footnote: Eymet CC play a series of matches each season, mid-April though to October in the South-West France League, Cup and T20 competitions, and welcome touring teams.

In-person residency card applications

I

n an apparent U-turn, the government has confirmed that applications for residency cards can once again be made in person in certain circumstances. Since May last year, all French administration has been exclusively managed online, including residency card applications. Following pressure from lawyers and immigration groups, however, those with complicated situations, incomplete documentation or without access to a computer can make an appointment in person at their local prefecture.

“Regarding the characteristics of the public concerned, the diversity and complexity of their situations, and the consequences for foreigners of their adminis-

trative situation, notably on their right to remain in France and, in some cases, to work, it is incumbent on the administration, when they impose online services to obtain certain residency papers, to provide accompaniment for those people,” the Conseil d’Etat said. “If a foreigner cannot submit their application online, the administration is required, as an exception, to allow people to submit requests for residence papers in another way.”

In a separate intervention, the interior ministry has confirmed when those currently in possession of a five-year Brexit residency card should apply for the tenyear “permanent” card. Expats who had been resident in France for more than five

years when the Withdrawal Agreement expired were eligible for a 10-year carte de séjour, with everyone else legally resident before the 31st January 2020 eligible for a five-year card.

Those who were resident in France for four years before the Withdrawal Agreement came into effect are now in theory able to apply for a ten-year card, but authorities are telling expats not to do so until their current carte de séjour is due to expire. In practice, the two types of card give British expats the same rights and with the system currently struggling under the weight of applications, there is no benefit to applying early and expats are being urged not to do so. ■

Lightning hits Mortemart church spire As storms hit towns across the region in June, a major disaster was narrowly avoided in Mortemart, northern Haute-Vienne, when the church's bell tower caught fire after being struck by lightning. The direct strike hit at 9:15 in the morning, but the damage caused was not immediately noticed.

“I saw a huge flash, which thundered right behind me and I said to myself that must have been close,” said one local. Another resident noticed the flames emerging from the bell tower half an hour later and calls were made to the pompiers. Twenty firefighters were soon on the scene, battling to control the fire, save the church and also the mairie, which is attached to the listed building.

The quick action by the brigades from Bellac, Mézières-sur-Issoire and Limoges ultimately saved the building and the majority of the damage was confined to the top of the bell tower. The church and the treasures within were unscathed, although the roof of the mairie did suffer damage from falling debris. ■

Australia compensates Sick killer whale dies France over sub deal in the river Seine @SeaShepherdFran (Twitter)

I

n a sign of a thawing in relations with France, Australian president Anthony Albanese has agreed to agreed to pay €555 million to settle a dispute over his government’s controversial decision to scrap a contract to buy French attack class submarines. The French government was left furious last year when Australia abruptly cancelled a €35 billion deal to build a fleet of submarines, before announcing that it had signed a separate deal with the UK and US - the so-called Aukus deal.

Despite being a close ally, authorities claim that they were only made aware of the cancellation hours before it was made public. The diplomatic incident also caused severe tension between France and the governments of the UK and US; President Biden made a 30-minute call to a reportedly frosty Macron to try and smooth over the damage caused.

President Macron accused the then-prime minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, of personally lying to him to which Morrison responded by saying he was “not going to cop sledging of Australia”. Relations remained on ice until Albanese was elected earlier this year and pledged to repair the damage to international relations caused by the previous administration.

“This is a fair and an equitable settlement which has been reached,” Albanese told reporters. “It follows, as well, discussions that I’ve had with President Macron and I thank him for those discussions and the cordial way in which we are re-establishing a better relationship between Australia and France.”

The French appear to have accepted the olive branch, with the defence minister welcoming the settlement deal. “It allows us to turn a page in our bilateral relations with Australia and look to the future,” Sébastien Lecornu said. “Just because a government in the past did not keep its word, it does not mean we have to forget our strategic relationship. Australia has a new team in power, we are happy to be able to work with them.”

When Albanese's left-of-centre Labour government won elections in May, ending a decade of right-wing politics in Australia, Macron welcomed his victory and invited the new PM to visit him in Paris. This offer has now apparently been accepted. “Details are being worked through. We have a critical relationship. France, of course, plays a critical role in the European Union. And President Macron, of course, has recently been re-elected, I am newly elected and it is important that we have engaged,” Albanese said recently. “I see a personal meeting between myself and President Macron in France as being absolutely vital to resetting that relationship, which is an important one for Australia’s national interests.”

he skeleton of a sick killer whale that was spotted in the Seine river will be preserved and stored in the capital's natural history museum. The orca was first spotted after it became detached from its pod and swam more than twenty miles up the river.

Attempts to lure the whale back out to sea via a drone emitting orca sounds failed, and audio recorded by the drone showed the sick animal was itself making distress calls. After scientists concluded that the whale was terminally ill, attempts were made to find and euthanise it, but the orca died of natural causes before the plan could be carried out.

A subsequent autopsy revealed that the whale had been suffering from mucormycosis, a disease that attacks the skin of the animal before spreading to the heart, lungs and brain. The disease was found to be very advanced, hence the whale's erratic behaviour, and experts say it would have caused significant suffering.

The Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris has one of the largest and most significant naturalist collections in the world. It currently holds 67 million specimens of animals, vegetables, and minerals, which it has been collecting for over 400 years. The latest addition will become the first full example of an Orcinus orca to be held at the museum. ■

A

mummified African cockroach, which stowed away on an 18th century French slave-trading vessel, has become a surprising new addition to the British National Archives. The insect was discovered by Oliver Finnegan as part of a project to digitise documents including undelivered letters, logbooks, ships papers and bills seized from “enemy” ships. The cockroach, named Peri, was found inside the pages of a captured French ship's ledger which had not ben opened in more than 200 years.

“I opened the book and saw this huge bug. It was kind of a skin-crawling moment because of its unexpectedness. It’s bigger than it looks in the pictures,” said the archivist. “These ships papers probably haven’t been opened or looked at since the mid-18th century.”

After initial fears that cockroaches had somehow infiltrated the high-secure archives were put to rest, entomologists determined the creature was an ex-

ample of an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), also known as a ship’s cockroach, which is native to Africa and introduced to the Americas via the slave trade.

The insect’s journey began when it boarded a slave-trading vessel which arrived in Guinea, on the west coast of Africa, in 1793 having set off from the French port of La Rochelle.

The crew later boarded a different vessel in modern-day Haiti bound for return to France, taking the ledger with them. During its journey, the vessel was seized by a British ship during one of the 14 wars that occurred on the high seas between 1652 and 1817.

In order to avoid accusations of piracy, captains would keep the ledger of any captured ship during times of war and present this to the Admiralty as proof that the seizure was legal. The ledger in which Peri was found is one of 35,000 such documents held today by the National Archives.

“When it got shut in the book it created a microclimate that was perfect for preservation,” said Natalie Brown, senior conservation manager at the National Archives. “We’ve named him Peri. When we opened it, we exposed him to the elements, so

that’s why there was such a race to get him analysed and placed in nice housing to protect him.”

Peri, pinned and mounted in a box with a Perspex lid, now has his own reference number and will be kept in a drawer in the National Archives. Like every

other item in the archives, Peri is now available to order up for anyone wishing to inspect him further in a special room, but despite the insect's colourful history, Finnegan admits he's “not sure how much uptake he will have”. ■

A

Parisian rat has become a surprise internet sensation after making an appearance during a live Spanish TV report. The rat appeared in front of the Notre-Dame Cathedral while a journalist was commentating on the controversial Champions League match between Liverpool and Real Madrid, provoking a mixture of disgust and hilarity.

“I can see a rat, Carlos... look over there, there's a rat!” the reporter shouts to his cameraman. A few seconds later, as the camera operator zooms in, a huge rat emerges from the undergrowth and calmly walks the length of the wall, prompting both laughter and horrified screams from the studio.

Whilst the incident provided a light-hearted meme that was very quickly circling the internet, many used it as another opportunity to attack the city's leaders over the state of the capital. Like many large cities around the world, Paris has a rat problem. A recent report revealed that France in fact has two entries in the top ten list of the world's most rat-infested cities: Paris comes in at number four, with Marseille at number 10. The capital is currently home to an estimated 10 million rats and is only beaten by Deshnoke in India, London and New York.

Another French city with a growing problem is Toulouse, where the town hall has turned to ferrets to combat the exploding number of rodents. “Using ferrets avoids the need for chemicals, which pollute the soil. Ferrets are environmentally friendly and also more humane than poison or traps, which can cost up to €800 each, including disposal of the corpses,” explained Françoise Ampoulange, who is responsible for the city's rivers, canals and animals.

As well as being better for the environment, the ferrets are also more efficient. While a trap may catch just one or two rats a day, ferrets can flush out an entire colony of around 10 rats in 15 minutes. “We block the exits to an underground burrow with fine black nets. Then the ferrets are let in and as soon as the rats smell them, they run out and we catch them. We then euthanise them with gas. It is quicker and more humane than poison.” ■

he European Union has introduced legislation that will see all smartphones and tablets required to use standardised charging cables from autumn 2024. Once in force, all devices must be equipped with the USB-C connector, bringing to an end decades of proprietary formats and incompatibility. The decision will have the greatest impact on Apple which currently uses its own “lightning” port for charging.

The rule will also apply to a number of other electronic devices including digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles and e-readers. Laptops will have to comply with the rule at a later date.

“Today we have made the common charger a reality in Europe!” said the European Parliament’s Alex Agius Saliba in a press statement. “European consumers have long been frustrated by multiple chargers piling up with every new device. Now they will be able to use a single charger for all their portable electronics.”

The EU has been fighting several high-profile legal battles against Apple in recent years, but denies that the company has been targeted by the decision to choose USB-C as the new standard. “The rule applies to all and sundry. It’s not adopted against anybody,” said Breton.

“We’re working for the consumers, not the companies, and we have to give these companies rules; rules that are clear in order to enter the internal market. In two years’ time, if Apple wants to sell products within our internal market they have to abide by our rules, and their device will have to be USB-C.” Critics say the new legislation will stifle innovation by de-incentivising manufacturers from developing improved charging standards. The EU denies this will be the case, and says it will update the legislation as new technology is developed. People in the EU currently spend around €2.4 billion per year on chargers alone and the European Commission has said that the new rule will save consumers €250 million annually.

Although Apple has campaigned to keep its lightning connector, this latest move has been on the cards for a number of years, and the tech giant has gradually been introducing USB-C to its newer models. USB-C ports were introduced in Apple’s 12in MacBook model in 2015 and in the iPad Pro in late 2018, while other iPads have come with the port since 2020. None of their iPhone range, however, currently uses USB-C. ■

No points for minor Limoges homeless speeding infractions charity appeal

U

nder plans being considered by the Interior Ministry, drivers in France may no longer be docked points on their licence for minor speed infringements. According to officials, 58% of all speeding fines are handed out to drivers going less than 5 km/h over the speed limit. While fines for such small excesses will remain under the proposals, drivers will not also lose a point from their licence.

Campaigners have fought for the change for years and driving association 40 millions d’automobilistes welcomed the news while still highlighting how the government's tough stance on speeding is hitting drivers in the pocket. “This announcement marks a real break with the road safety policy of Emmanuel Macron's first term in office, which was responsible for the 80 km/h speed limit and the rampant increase in all types of speed cameras.”

Critics of the government's approach have argued that many drivers are behaving sensibly, but are simply being caught out by the constantly changing national speed limit as you cross France. Since the government's

botched attempt to lower the speed limit to 80 km/h, almost half of the country's departments have rolled back to 90 km/h on part, if not all, of their road network. The result is often confusion as to what the current limit is and the amassing of points and fines for relatively minor offences.

The new 5 km/h limit will reportedly be implemented after the current 5 km/h tolerance is taken into account. Under the current rules someone driving at 54 km/h in a 50 zone will be “controlled” at 49 km/h and escape sanction, but someone travelling at 59 km/h will be controlled at 54 km/h and receive a €135 fine and one point off their licence. Under the proposed changes, in this second case, the driver will simply be handed the fine, with no loss of points.

The 5km/h tolerance applies on roads with a speed limit of up to 100 km/h. Above this speed, there is a tolerance of 5%.

Fines in low-speed areas are more severe.

Outside of town centres on roads with a speed limit greater than 50 km/h, motorists caught driving at less than 20 km/h over the speed limit currently receive a fine of €68 and the loss of one point. ■

There's more to fish than cod

ne of the outcomes of Russia’s war against Ukraine is not just the impact on global food stocks of Ukrainian exports of grain and sunflower seeds, stalled by Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s seaports but the rising cost of white fish.

Were you aware that Russia is responsible for the provision of 45 per cent of the world's white fish supply, largely pollack (lieu jaune), cod (cabillaud) and haddock (églefin), all fished in the Barents Sea? Not just a shortage of sunflower oil is pushing the price of fish-andchips to extraordinary heights. High-end chefs are taking specialities like scallops off their menus. They are no longer saleable at a price that reflects their now hugely elevated cost. In London, one Michelinstarred chef’s signature scallop dish that had been £19/€22 would now have to be costed at an impossible £30/€35. So it’s no longer on the menu.

France is fortunate that its own fishing grounds are so close and so abundant with interesting varieties there is less need to buy white fish. Fishes appear on the fishmonger’s slabs of ice that may be utterly unfamiliar. But there is no one more willing to tell you what to do with them than the person behind you in the queue.

The British have always been conservative in their fish choice, unaware that half the species they spurn (like the gurnard common in British waters highly prized in Marseille as essential to bouillabaisse) are warmly welcomed in Europe.

There were fifty-two species of edible fish listed in the 1970s by what is now Britain’s Sea Fish Industry Authority. That’s not counting shellfish or freshwater fish, nor fish imported for specific ethnic markets, and the Brits still don’t eat nearly enough of them. Maybe it’s a left-over from the days when it was felt men required a good steak or chunk of red meat as a main course.

Those days and attitudes are long gone, and we understand how important it is for climate change to reduce our appetite for red meat.

Over the course of one summer, I counted over twenty-five different kinds of fish in our Périgord markets. But if you still feel a little anxious about venturing into unfamiliar cooking territory, try this dish, which makes a change from the familiar Moules marinières, and has the advantage that most of it can be prepared in advance. ■ Julia Watson has been a long-time Food Writer for newspapers and magazines in the US and the UK. Gratin de moules

Ingredients (serves 4-6) 2 kg mussels 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 350ml dry white wine 350g butter, softened

3-6 garlic cloves, depending on enthusiasm, peeled and grated Zest of 1 lemon and 2 tablespoons juice 4 rounded tablespoons finely chopped parsley 100g fresh breadcrumbs Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Tip the mussels into a sinkful of cold water. Scrub each one, pulling off their beards. Discard any broken mussels. Tap any open mussels with a knife. If they don't immediately shut tight, discard them. Once cleaned, tumble the mussels through fresh cold water to eliminate any remaining sand.

Heat the oil in a large pan, add the shallots, stir, and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the wine and raise the heat to medium. As soon as it comes to the boil, tip in the mussels and cover with a lid. Cook the mussels for about 5 minutes to open them, shaking the pan frequently. Remove the lid and lift out the mussels with a slotted spoon. Discard any that are still closed. Reserve the cooking liquid and strain into a bowl through a sieve lined with muslin or doubled kitchen towel, discarding the shallots. Rinse out the pan, then return the liquid to it. Boil the liquid over a high heat down to about 2 tablespoons.

Remove and discard the top shell of each cooked mussel. Arrange the bottoms close together in a roasting pan.

Mash the butter, garlic, lemon zest and juice, chopped parsley and breadcrumbs together with the mussel cooking liquid. This is a great deal easier if you do it by squeezing everything together with your clean hands. Season, and press a blob of the mixture onto each mussel.

Preheat your grill to its hottest. Place the roasting pan under it until the butter is bubbling and the breadcrumbs lightly browned. Serve immediately with plenty of crusty baguette to dip into the juices - and a pile of paper napkins.

The dish can be prepared ahead and stored in the fridge up to the point where you dab the garlic butter mixture onto each mussel. (Keep that mixture on the counter to stay soft. Adding it to the mussels before refrigerating them will make the fridge reek of garlic.)

t was humbling to be invited to sit once again on the superjury that chooses the Vigneron of the Year. People far more skilled and experienced sitting on the other juries that pick the gold, silver and bronze winners from which we on the super-jury select the ultimate prize.

It was also heartening, since time after time, wines that I have praised in these columns ended up winning gold and silver medals in the annual Concours, held this year in the splendidly restored setting of the Château de Commarque.

It was also with a great sense of pride that we picked this year the first woman to be Winemaker of the Year, Gaëlle Reynou of the Domaine de Perreau in the Montravel, for her glorious Côtes de Montravel 2021. I wrote an entire column, based on my visit to her vineyard, about her excellent wines. Looking back in my file, I found several other references to her wines and her valiant work on promoting and supporting women winemakers, while also raising three small children.

The Concours required a great deal of organisation. A total of 221 wines were presented to the Concours, coming from an extraordinary sixteen different appellations.

No other wine region in France can boast so many different types of wine.

So we had medals for three types of Bergerac - red, white and rosé - and medals for the differently defined red and white Côtes de Bergerac. There were separate medals for the reds and whites of

Côtes de Duras and for the reds and whites of the Montravel. Then there were medals for Monbazillac dessert wine, for Pécharmant, for Rosette and for Côtes de Montravel.

This year there were also medals for the best of the reds, whites and rosés from the IGP, the second category of quality for French wines. It stands for Indication géographique protégée, not so strictly regulated as Appellation d'origine contrôlée, but much more stringent than the lowest category Vin de France. So an IGP wine may blend wines from different years, and from more grape varieties.

Earlier this year I raved about the IGP wines being made by Patrick Barde at Château Le Raz, and his red and white each won a gold medal. For the whites of the Bergerac, Château du Rooy and Château Les Brandeaux, each the subject of a column, won golds.

For the Bergerac reds, two subjects of columns, Les Verdots won gold and Domaine de Pécoula won silver. For the Montravel reds, Château Moulin Caresse won gold and Château Puy-Servain won silver; each the subject of a column.

For Monbazillac, the Abbaye from Château La Vieille Cure won gold, from the vineyard of the late and lamented Christian Roche, again the subject of a column. And from the Pécharmant, the cuvée Kallinago and the cuvée Constellation, each from the vineyard named Hukulumbarros, won golds. After I visited the vineyard recently, it was to be the subject of a future column because the wines

of its young owner are very good indeed.

Mickaël Gaulhiac has wine in his blood as the son and grandson of a winemaker, and also the grandson of a wine négociant. The name of the vineyard comes from the name of an ancient Roman ship, which became the name of his family’s vineyard in Tunisia.

He spent more than twenty years in agriculture bio and bio vineyards before starting out on his own, and picked 5 splendid hectares on the Pécharmant plateau, close to the magnificent Château Mondazur. Then he built a very impressive chai, digging into the hillside so that his wines are fed into the cuves by gravity, not by pumps. His barrels are kept buried in a limestone chamber, no concrete allowed, so the temperature is regulated naturally.

His first year, 2017, was a disaster, all his grapes killed off by frost. He persevered and I was able to taste the two wines that won golds, and at once bought a case of each. He uses three cépages, as he puts it: “Merlot for its roundness and red fruits, Malbec for the spicy notes, and Cabernet Sauvignon for the complexity.”

I have yet to taste his Hukulumbarros, after which the vineyard is named, and am waiting for it to go on sale again, since most of his wines sell out fast. I’m sure we will hear much more of this gifted and bio-committed young winemaker.

I should add that I have no special qualifications as a judge of wine, except that I love wine,

The wines of Bergerac - Awards season

Winemaker of the year: Gaëlle Reynou of the Domaine de Perreau drink it often and have a great respect and affection for the people who make it. But the fact that so many of my columns have covered vineyards that have gone on to win gold medals is not a matter of luck.

I always ask the advice of people whose expertise I respect for the next vineyards to visit. As Murray Sayle, one of my Fleet Street colleagues once observed, for any journalist “expert knowledge is just a phone call away”. ■

As in most situations there is usually one partner who “deals with the finances” and there is nothing wrong with that, but if that partner is the one to die first it could leave the surviving partner and family in a very difficult situation, especially with the situation in France of Forced Heirship. By being prepared, by talking to our families, by documenting what is in place or what you ideally want to happen if you find yourself in a similar situation of needing long-term

care, this can be just as important for your family as making the plans in the first place.

I cannot purport to be able to help with every aspect of your future planning, but your finances are a good start. What shape are your pensions, savings and investments in? Are they setup properly to be able to access, if you need, throughout your lifetime and pass on to the right people on your death in the most tax efficient manner? his month’s article is one that is quite personal to me due to a situation I have been assisting with over the last few months. An elderly and very dear friend of mine has lived in the next village for possibly close to 20 years now. She gave up driving a few years ago after an accident made her realise it was time, but has not been isolated, as friends and neighbours have always been able to help with taking her shopping, etc. Unfortunately for her, she only has one child who doesn’t live in France or the UK and with the Covid pandemic their last visit was nearly 3 years ago, although, as we all now know with technology, the world is a much smaller place and they have kept in touch on a daily basis.

Recently, however, my dear friend has become quite suddenly ill and to cut a long story short I became her Personne de

confiance. There have now been several visits to hospital, doctors and specialists and a stay in a convalescent home, followed by some care at home. This is a very real situation that we could all find ourselves in at some point and quite scary for both patient and family in a system that is not familiar to us and a language that is not always easy to fully understand. From the latter perspective, my daughter has been an immense help in this situation.

As a first-year medicine student she understands a lot more of the vocabulary than I do and also as a fluent French speaker has been available as much as possible for translation and phone calls to ensure we did not miss anything vital. I can’t thank her enough, hence my opportunity to mention, publicly, how amazing she has been.

You might be wondering why I am sharing this story. Just over a year ago I wrote an article about how it was “Good to talk about Money” and this was followed by an online campaign from Blacktower. The Solarventi air panel was invented more than 20 years ago by Hans Jørgen Christensen, from Aidt Miljø, with the backing of the Danish government. How it works The principle behind Solarventi is simple: a small, builtin, solar cell powers a 12V fan that is connected to an air vent, a control unit and an on/ off switch.

Whenever the sun shines, the air in the solar panel is heated and the fan, receiving power from the solar cell, introduces warm, dry air into your home at the rate of 20 to 100 cubic metres per hour.

The initial models were more than capable of keeping the cottages dry (and ventilated), even with the limited sunshine hours available in Denmark during the winter season.

Les petits jardiniers du Limousin

We are a gardening association based in the Mairie at St. Amand le Petit, between Eymoutiers and Peyrat le Château.

We hold monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month, starting at 2.30 pm. Meetings are held in English, but we can also present topics in French. We have lots of different nationalities amongst our members. Our aim is to provide and promote opportunities for people to develop their interest and knowledge in horticulture and gardening and related topics in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In-house workshop meetings, external speakers and visits are on our agenda.

During Covid-19, we were not been able to have meetings and kept in touch with members and friends via Facebook.

This has become a very popular feature so do have a look at our Facebook page, "Les petits jardiniers du Limousin", where people post photos of their garden, ask questions, share information and keep in contact on a casual, friendly basis.

Titine This lovely girl is called Titine, a five-year-old Labrador cross who has found herself at the refuge after her owner went into a retirement home.

Until now, she has spent her life in a courtyard, she has been loved, but knows very little of the outside world.

Because of her former life, she is going to need a family with a lot of patience who will show her how wonderful life can be. She is already enjoying walking on a lead, running around the large parks at the refuge and getting to know different people. This girl really will make someone a superb companion, all she needs is time and love.

Cancer Support Haute-Vienne ACTIVITY FOR LIFE 2022 Cancer Support France have announced that their annual fundraising event, Activity for Life, will take place from 8 to 11 September.

This year the Activity – called “A Lot of Cycling” - will be hosted in the Lot department. In a departure from the traditional format of a linear cycle ride, it will be centred on the charming town of Puy L’Evêque, with daily cycle rides beginning and ending in or near the town, plus a walk for non-cyclists on Saturday 10 September. Puy L’Evêque sits at the neck of a long loop of the river Lot, between Fumel and Cahors, capital of the Lot département and at the centre of the famous Cahors wine region. The cycling terrain in the Lot can be hilly; however there is also a véloroute along the meanderings of the Lot which allows easy cycling and lovely countryside either on quiet back roads or on a voie verte.

The Tour de France is scheduled to finish in Cahors on Friday 22nd July (stage 19) and it’s hoped to be able to include a small part of the route in the ride.

Cancer Support France national president Sue Smith said: “We rely on fund-raising to support our training and website, and this is our main way of doing that. We hope that as many people as possible will join us for a fun few days in a lovely region.”
