MESSAGE from the Publisher Earlier in 2016 Northland has again made headlines, being the region with the best Electric Vehicle infrastructure in the country. The Business Finder is proud to publish a four page update on the amazing work that local companies do to win us this title. The people behind this put their heart and soul into it – please go and speak to them and see why they are so passionate. In a digital age where print can be perceived as outdated, we want to thank all our advertisers for again choosing this trusted medium. It proves print is still an advertising medium of choice. Our product’s high visibility and the use of combined media solutions, is only part of the reason why we are thankful to say that we have a 95 % rebooking rate year after year. By pairing print with our other media solutions, you are spreading your advertising message across different mediums that appeal to different demographics. This gives your business the best opportunity of achieving the desired outcome – without breaking the budget. 2016 have just started and thus far we have gained a beautiful canopied shared zone and an improved town centre. We believe this to be a step in the right direction with support for the town centre. Higher foot traffic and positive reviewing of fresh ideas. We trust our council will keep on upgrading this already beautiful city and district - creating opportunities for everybody with initiative and ambition. The Business Finder aims to promote Whangarei district businesses using combined media solutions in the form of three different mediums: • An annual, glossy, perfect bound business directory • Digital signage • Business overviews at www.thebusinessfinder.co.nz Kind Regards

Be Prepared, Look After Yourself and Your Loved Ones In an emergency situation, are you prepared? Do you have food and water and resources to look after yourself and your loved ones up to 3 days without any outside help? This is the reality of a civil defence emergency so it’s better to be ready! Do you know the hazards that may affect the Whangarei district? The 3 major hazards for the district are: • Flooding / storm • Electricity Failure • Human Pandemic • Regional Tsunami Preparing a home and / or get away kit is recommended. Storing water, 3 litres per day per person, torch, first aid kit, face / dust masks, essential medicines and a radio with spare batteries are some of the recommended items. Looking after pets and animals is also important; make sure you have what you need to look after your animals too. Northland Tsunami sirens are tested on the Sunday at the beginning and end of Daylight savings at 09.20am. Tsunami sirens mean ‘Seek Further Information’ about the situation so you can make an informed decision on how to respond. In some cases there may not be time to sound sirens, so learn about the natural warning signs of a tsunami, including the ground shaking for longer than a minute, loud roaring sound like a jet engine and the ocean going in and out unusually fast. If you notice any of the natural warning signs, move to higher ground immediately. There are other hazards which can strike anytime, for further information to help in being prepared here are some useful websites:

Foreword from Mayor Sheryl Mai

It takes a community to grow a business... That community includes people with the bright ideas and courage to get it started, a Council and business development organisations with support programmes in place, a skilled local workforce, and a commitment by other members of that community to using its service or goods.

Mayor Sheryl Mai

Whangarei is large enough to offer a broad range of retail outlets, manufacturing, health care, eateries, crafts and trades people, industries and public sector organisations, and yet still small enough to retain that ‘village’ feel where everyone knows and plays their part in growing a prosperous district. Our diverse businesses generate approximately half of the Northland regional economy and are the economic lifeblood of our district and region, so ensuring they thrive is in the best interests of everyone living here. Whangarei District Council is leading the way. Over the next ten years we are investing heavily in business and economic development, and are committed to working with industry, the community and public sector organisations to form alliances and promote growth for both new and existing businesses. Central government has also come to the party with the release in February of the Tai Tokerau Economic Action Plan. Aimed at stimulating Northland’s economy, this very exciting plan outlines 58 tangible actions to lift employment, incomes and investment in the region. Using the locally owned and operated Business Finder is one way for our residents to join that push toward a healthier economy. When they spend their money at local businesses they increase the flow of wealth around their community and the number of jobs created. We all benefit from that in the long run, so go ahead and use The Business Finder advertising service as often as you can, and help make Whangarei a better place to live, work, invest and play.

JACQUES DE BEER – PORTRAIT SKETCHES Pencil portrait sketches for sale by taking your photograph and transforming them into authentic works of art. We take your photographs and transform them into authentic works of art. All the portrait sketches displayed in this brochure are real examples of my work, hand-drawn by me and using artistic attention to detail to bring out the very best in every subject. For many years this was just a hobby for me doing my family and a few friends children, now you can have your own personal sketch too. All of these drawings are made with graphite pencils. My artistic interpretation allow me to produce high quality, photo realistic artworks about people, specifically portraiture, trying to capture the person inside the outer shell of a body. Sizes available: A2 - $ 225 A1 - $ 350 Framing is not included but can be arranged. Picture is supplied with standard white mounting board.

Monica Krey Mon-Lo Sculptures. www.mon-lo.co.nz. I grew up in South-Africa in a creative environment my background in Ceramics began in 1987, where I learned all the aspects of hand building, glazes and wheel work, under the strict guidance of my Tutor Shirley Dunkin. I knew from the first moment, I worked with clay, I had found my creative purpose as working with clay involves imagination, touch and vision. After my one year part time course in Ceramics, I started working full time and had very little time at my disposal to pursue my Art, only to return in October 2014, when my sister- in- law passed away at the young age of 52, I then realized not all of us have the privilege to live to retirement. I started Sculpturing as a distraction to keep my mind and hands busy and also realised if you have a passion to do something, now is the time. I had my first exhibition in August 2015 ( the Art of convergence ) with Lenny Murupaenga, which was a great success, shortly after that I was invited to have my second exhibition with Sculpture Northland in November 2015, they accepted three of my Sculptures for

display. In November 2016 I did a short workshop with the famous Dell Pryor, who has since become my mentor and adviser. I am a Ceramicist and I am openly addicted to clay. For the last 2 years I have been creating works in Clay. I find that Clay anchors me to the Earth and sends me other places. It informs my sense of peace in the world and fires my imagination in a way NO other material or Media can. Clay comforts and inspires me and constantly challenges my understanding of its potential possibilities for future aspirations. Inspiration for my Sculptures stem from my longstanding curiosity and interest in Anatomy, Art and Nature. Indigenous Artists were masters of utilising materials from their natural resources, as well as material collected by themselves, each form, whether a Totem, Mask, shield, Body art, or Figurine was created as a means of connecting human beings to each other and to the natural and spirit worlds. My process is strictly intuitive. The work will begin with a seed of an idea based on a cultural myth, folklore or legend, each piece is hand built, sculptural, unique one of a kind, colour is incorporated predominately through

P: 029 770 1720 E: jacquesdebeer7@gmail.com

the application of glazes, oxide and stains. My work incorporates a wide range of detailed expressions, including denial, contemplation, greed, anger, joy, pleasure, pain, frustration, sorrow and confusion. The expressions on each face are unique, as NO two faces are the same. Exploring the possibilities and encountering the unexpected are what inspire me and keep me creating new pieces. As I am very visual, I tend to think in images and creating a sculpture allows me to express what words occasionally will not, for example, as I worked on the sculpture “Folami”, I realised I was working through a feeling of being out of balance at a time in my life when I was going through great transition working with stone and clay. I’m working with the crust of the Earth and feel a strong sense of honouring that primordial connection we humans have with the earth that sustains us.

NORTY NORTH MOVEMENT Norty North Movement is collective of around 20 individual artists who have collaborated together on an album representing their unique Northland style and bringing back real hip hop. Their sound is a mixture of hip hop, reggae, roots and soul, influenced by growing up in rural communities from Whangarei to Moerewa to Kaitaia and day to day struggles faced within their communities. They use their music to uplift others in similar situations and inspire them to chase their dreams. Look out for their self titled album due to be released this year.

DERMEO CAVI-FAST CaviFast is one of the most advanced and efficient systems using Ultrasound Cavitation to breakdown fat cells. Cavitation works by destroying the membrane around a fat cell that holds a pocket of fat. The released fat is then metabolized through the liver and lymphatic system. Only a few treatments are needed for results. We help men and women with fat deposits on the belly (love handles), thighs, hips, and buttocks. No injections or other interventions are needed....no anesthesia...no antibiotic treatment....and you can immediately return to your normal activities. Because of these characteristics aesthetic therapists have named it “Natural Liposuction”

What is the cavitational non-sugical liposuction? Cavitation enables treating localized excess fat and reduces the accumulated layers thanks to the propagation of low frequencies sound waves. The cavitation principle allows the treatment of excess localised fat and reduces the built-up layers in order to lose centimetres from the treated zone. Low frequency ultrasounds generated by the transducers use the water located in our cell to form bubbles. These bubbles increase their volume until imploding, thus weakening the membrane of the adipocytes and releasing the triglycerides. Indeed, thanks to this technique, it is possible to fight effectively against unsightly dimpling of fat to obtain a loss of centimetres of the treated area!

the cellulite and eliminates localised fat within the first month. This treatment is FDA approved and has been researched with great results!

Is the treatment painful? Cavitation is a non-invasive technique. Therefore, it is painless. However, some patients may feel mild tingling or slight overheating on the treated areas. During the treatment, the patient hears tinnitus due to low frequencies ultrasounds that are propagated in the body. The perception of this sound is normal during the session.

Benefits Removes fat from stomach (love handles) and waist, hips, thighs, arms and buttocks etc. Reduces cellulite, helps to firm and tone, completely painless.

Treatment Information The treatment lasts 30 minutes, it is totally painless and with no known side effects. In most cases the results can be seen immediately depending on individual clients. Clients needs vary with how many treatments they will need and treatments require intervals of four days in between each session. Prices from $99.00.

Is it effective? The results are visible from the first session. Moreover, in addition to a diet and regular sport activities, the treatment significantly decreases

Exercise Your Body to Increase Your Long-term Memory

It seems that regular consistent physical exercise increases the volume of regions of the brain that are important for thinking and memory. A study published in Neurology showed that adults in their seventies that exercised the most experienced the least brain shrinkage with less white matter brain lesions that are signs of dementia. Additionally, another recent study revealed that older adults that exercised regularly reduced their risk of vascular-related dementia by 40%. That’s significant.! If losing weight, lowering your blood pressure or preventing disease and depression are not enough to get you motivated to exercise then the fact that 1 new case of dementia is detected every 4 seconds will do the trick. You can avoid the brain fog that comes with age but don’t wait until it begins to show up…give your brain what it needs to stay healthy now. Studies suggest that people who exercise versus those who don’t have greater volume in the parts of the brain that control thinking and memory (the medial temporal cortex and prefrontal cortex). A neurologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and instructor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Scott McGinnis, went on to say that “Even more exciting is the finding that engaging in a program of regular exercise of moderate intensity over six months or a year is associated with an increase in the volume of selected brain regions.” Exercise reduces insulin resistance and inflammation and stimulates the release of growth factors…chemicals that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of blood vessels in the brain and the survival of new brain cells. Physical activity that engages hand-eye coordination or complex motor skills are particularly beneficial for brain building. Because of the increased heart rate when you exercise, more oxygen is pumped to the brain, so physical exercise not only gets the body in shape but it helps to firm and tone up the mind, it stimulates the growth of new neuronal connections in the brain. It also releases an army of hormones that all aid in providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells.

Shop 2, 485 Kamo Road Carolyn Hansen Fitness www.carolynhansenfitness.com Exercising your body isn’t hard, simply adopt a challenging and fun exercise program that you can perform a few times weekly for 20-30 minutes at a time is all it takes. But you must be consistent and dedicated to get results. Both physical and mental activity require active sessions and down times when your body and mind are “regrouping.” Life can be a struggle if you have not built your “mind muscle” and like all muscles it requires rest in between challenges. For example, when exercising your muscles, you must allow for rest periods between your exercise routines to allow your muscles to regroup. The down time is as important as the active time. Same is true with your mind. You must find appropriate exercises such as meditation that give your mind “rest” in between active participation in life. Maintaining a calm attitude and mental state when everything around screams disaster is a form of mental mastery. But only those who have developed their mental muscle will show mental mastery when the time comes. When you are hyper or nervous you can’t think straight. Your mind literally gets foggy and this impacts your personal, social and business health as well as the health of your body. Being calm allows you to mentally tune into what is happening around you both internally and externally and to act rather than “react.” But, just like your bodies physical muscles, brain muscles don’t develop overnight. So, don’t expect to find yourself calm in a challenging mental situation if you have not done the needed work ahead of time. Challenge your body with physical exercise and it gets stronger but the added benefit is that your mind does too. Exhibiting a strong memory and staying mentally sharp depends on the health and vitality of your brain. Exercise has proven to improve long term memory, reasoning, abstract thinking, problem solving and a whole lot more. So, what are you waiting for? Isn’t it time you “Reclaimed Your Longevity”…

Stylish Living We’re proud of what we do! Starting with a blank canvas is a great way to achieve a truly individual home. From initial contact through to completion of your home we want you to feel at ease. We believe with the quality of people at Bella Homes we have the ability to deliver that “something special”. During construction we encourage our clients to come to site and get involved. Our clients are treated as part of our team, and the more input they have the greater the chances of delivering that dream home. Watching your new home that you have had genuine input into evolve in front of you is a wonderful feeling.

www.bellahomes.co.nz

A concept design agreement is the first step. This agreement outlines the cost of engaging one of our architectural designers to create a concept for your new home. We come to you. We sit, we listen, we talk. By engaging in conversation and getting a feel for exactly what you want and need from your new home we will deliver a truly personalized, unique design. As part of our desire to offer the complete package we have our interior/exterior designer come to you and start talking colours, styles, fabrics and textures. These are a fun element to individualizing your home and an area most people love to express their personality. Construction time frame depends on the size and complexity of your design.

We prefer to give time frame estimates, focusing on the quality of what we do rather than on a finish date. So that we never sacrifice our level of quality and service we only build a limited number of homes a year. Bella Homes has no desire to be the biggest home builder in Northland – just the best !

WHICH WAY DO I GO WHEN I WANT TO BUY A HOUSE? How do you choose between building new or purchasing an existing home? This is a personal choice which is normally emotionally driven. Older homes have usually more character and are in established areas with a garden. New homes are usually in subdivisions which are not established. This is the emotional buy in, but there are other factors to consider. In a new home you have the benefit of all the warranties, guarantees and of course warmth. But there is a price to pay for this, or is there? As with the whole housing market, everything has a cycle that is well documented in historical fact. In a rising market, second hand homes increase in value that is driven by the market in regards to supply and demand. Once this kicks into gear, it affects new homes too. The cost of sections increase it escalades the cost to build. But there is a time delay between the two and if you find the right section you can do very well.

This is the same in second hand homes. When the market is flat, you can pick up some real bargains. At the end of the day It comes down to personal choice what is right for you and your family. Are you looking for low maintenance living Or good rental return with minimal work? Maybe that home that you love the look of, in your desired location. But once you lived in a new home it is certainly hard to go back… enough said J www.pacifichomes.co.nz

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WOOL INSULATION: A ‘BREATHING’ INSULATION Wool ‘breathes’, which means a drier home, as wool absorbs and releases moisture from your living environment (within a breathable construction system. Terra Lana recommends the Foreverbreathe wall system). Dampness is a main factor in the health risk of cold, uninsulated housing. It is much harder to stay warm in damp air, plus the moisture can cause moulds, mildews and other organic contaminates to grow. Research shows these are a threat to your health, leading to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, rheumatic fever and infectious skin diseases. Our wool blend insulation is resistant to mold, unlike some other fibres often used as insulation. In addition, as wool breathes it resists temperature change by absorbing and evaporating moisture from within the fibre. In a breathing construction system Terra Lana can • Act like a very considerable thermal mass, • Resist the change in temperature, • Flatten out the peak highs and lows of temperature, • Improve the comfort of homes, • Reduce the energy required to heat and cool a home.

DETOXIFYING Wool actually absorbs toxins out of the air around it. Sick building syndrome is a well documented illness caused by toxins emitted from building materials and furnishings (such as formaldehyde) and from moulds and mildew. Terra Lana works against that for you, locking those toxins permanently away in its cellular structure. Formaldehyde is commonly used in resin-based wood products such as chipboard or customwood and is also found in finishes, furnishings, floor coverings and some insulations. Formaldehyde is slowly released from these products as the resin hydrolyses. The emissions increase with temperature and humidity. Wool molecules bind with the formaldehyde molcules in such a way that the result is irreversible and reemission does not occur. Thus wool is able to effectively and permanently remove formaldehyde from indoor air.

Terra Lana natural wool insulation is capable of absorbing close to 100% of the formaldehyde commonly found in most new buildings. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are by-products of combustion processes using petroleum products and coal, and are produced by gas cookers, open fires and vehicle exhausts. Wool is able to trap these harmful gases in the same way, thereby filtering your breathable air.

NON-TOXIC Terra Lana Wool Blend Insulation is toxin free, non-irritant, nonallergenic and odorless. No harmful chemicals are used in it’s manufacture. The fibres in wool are too large to be a respitory threat, and if inhaled, they break down easily because they are a natural organic protein. Often synthetic fibres (such as glass fibre) are very fine and easily inhaled, where they remain and can cause aggrevation. Terra Lana Insulation can be safely and easily installed with bare hands and requires no protective clothing. NATURAL Because our insulation is made from natural and recycled resource, it’s also a healthier choice for our wider environment, saving on pollutions from primary manufacturing and toxic or synthetic materials. Using a natural product also means no lasting nasty legacy at the end of it’s life, as it will safely decompose with no toxic residue. Terra Lana Wool Blend Insulation is made from pre-consumer recycled natural wool and a non-toxic polyester melt bond to help bind it together.

ENHANCE YOUR HOME, COMFORT, HEALTH & FUTURE When tomorrow finally comes, you’ll appreciate that you made a healthy choice for your home insulation. Wrap your home in the superior natural warmth of Terra Lana Wool Blend Insulation ~ it’s the natural choice for your home, family and future.

www.fall-pac.co.nz A new home in Canterbury is making use of natural building materials to make the building healthy for its occupants while coming in at just $1600 per square metre. Robin Curtis’ beach home in Canterbury cost about $1600 per square metre to build. Even complete strangers will get a welcoming cup of tea and a tour of Robin Curtis’ North Canterbury home. The newly built Rotherham home is a showcase for a range of products that in combination create a warmer, drier, healthier home environment. At first glance it looks like a regular family home but the use of Foreverbeech native hardwood timber, Magnum Board interior and exterior linings, Terra Lana wool insulation, Natural House oil-based coatings and Biopin interior paints has created a house that is not only breathable but free of chemicals. Curtis describes it as “health-based building”, an environmentally beneficial home construction philosophy he studied while living in North America. Health-based building combines materials that have been manufactured with minimal environmental effect to create affordable, high-quality, chemical-free homes. Walls, floors and ceiling cavities are breathable, meaning the house remains mouldfree, warm and dry without the need for mechanical air transfer systems. Coming back to New Zealand just before the first of the Christchurch earthquakes he took a job with New Zealand Sustainable Forest Products, a West Coast-based

supplier of sustainably logged hardwood beech timber. Marketed under the Foreverbeech brand, the company produces interior and exterior timber that can be used for cladding, decking, joinery, furniture and flooring. The timber can be stained or oiled to create anything from a Scandinavian-style blonde wood through to something more traditional in appearance. Curtis saw an opportunity to bring together a suite of complimentary building products and suppliers to give home builders access to a range of materials to build homes that performed to higher levels. “We’re far from being a timber mill now. We’ve had to be active on a number of fronts.” More importantly, he wanted to prove a better home could be built for a similar price to what is currently available in the market. “This house is a $1600 per square metre house. The current rate in Christchurch is $2000 per square metre for a standard four inch wall; which is common to market but is of low performance,” he says. “Homes should be valued upon the whole home performance, and that includes the quality of its air.” Curtis built his Rotherham home using post and beam construction, which he admits looked like a barn during the build, but now it’s complete has light and airy rooms with high ceilings. He chose that style of construction because it gives a high level of structural performance in areas with strong winds, earthquakes and high water tables. Curtis chose a New Zealand-made Pyroclassic fire to heat the home. “Where Pyroclassic is concerned; we looked into the engineering/performance that makes Pyroclassic stand out and relied upon

Consumer magazine for independent evaluations,” he says. “The Pyroclassic wood burner provides high levels of radiant heat into large spaces. Radiant heat is the aspect needed when the home design is based on breathable materials and whole home performance.”Pyroclassic is a woodburning engine we should duplicate for use in many wood burners. The home also has thick walls stuffed with Terra Lana wool insulation to cope with the southern winter. Curtis says the product range could be used with any style of house and is even fielding approaches from building companies interested in adding the environmentally friendly line-up to their homes. “We want consumers to know they can play a large part in sustainable development without impacting their daily lives or stepping away from the constructors they trust.” For more information on Health based building visit Hardie Thomson Northland 18 Rewa Rewa Road Raumanga Whangarei

Robust drug & alcohol policy key factor in new Health & Safety at Work Act. New Health & Safety legislation is scheduled to take effect on 4 April 2016. (Health & Safety at Work Act – HSWA). The new Act will significantly alter New Zealand’s health and safety system. For Directors or those in a governance role, the implications are significant. There will be a due diligence duty to proactively manage health and safety. Individual officers are personally liable and are not able to delegate responsibility. For Directors, it makes sense to proactively manage drug and alcohol risk, before the new legislation takes effect. Workplace drug and alcohol testing - preemployment, random, reasonable cause and post-incident - is key to ensuring a safe workplace and is proven to be an effective tool to prevent accidents within the workplace, but a Drug & Alcohol policy must be in place before testing goes ahead. The benefits of introducing a testing regime are many, including reduced accidents and near misses, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity and reduced disciplinary actions. The new HSWA brings with it added responsibility to Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking, referred to as a PCBU. This recognises that not every person on a working site who is responsible for health & safety is necessarily an ‘employer’. Under the Act all PCBU’s must maintain a safe working environment, ensure the safe use, handling and storage of plant, structure and substances and provide information, supervision and training to help protect the health and safety of workers. They must also ensure the health and safety of anyone else that comes to the workplace. Workers themselves must also take reasonable care to ensure that their own acts or omissions do not adversely affect the safety of themselves or others. The new HSWA brings with it harsher penalties, for example a PCBU who is reckless in respect of their duties under the HSWA can liable to a fine of up to $600,000 and even a term of imprisonment. If an unsafe working practice results in a death in the workplace the fines are much higher, up to $3 million for a company. Officers of PCBU’s who are found guilty of reckless conduct causing death or serious injury (ie being aware of a significant risk and failing to take steps to eliminate it) can face up to 5 years imprisonment. (An officer is defined within the Act as those who ‘exercise significant influence over the management of the business or undertaking’). Drugs in the workplace are a recognised hazard and as such only a robust and approved drug testing programme, utilising fair and proper procedures and conducted in accordance with best commercial practice, will help create a safe workplace. The testing provider must hold ISO 15189-2012 accreditation to be able to conduct on-site screening and prevent any allegations of discrimination, the tester should also be an independent service provider to be able to withstand legal scrutiny. This is the start of creating a drug-free environment. Further to this, TDDA also believe training and education is the key to effective implementation of all drug and alcohol policies. TDDA’s existing clients, in their diverse industries, take drug testing very seriously and know that it plays an important part in their business operation. But there are others who run the inherent risk of either doing nothing at all, or being so off track that it gives a false sense of security and promotes an unhealthy environment. With the new HSWA all businesses, Directors and employers need to be confident they are managing all risks appropriately.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE USING POWERED HAND TOOLS? •

• •

5 Walton Street, Whangarei www.powertoolcentres.co.nz

Ensure that you have been properly trained to use the tool safely. Read the operator’s manual before using the tool and operate the tool according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use only tested and approved tools. Ensure that the power tool has the correct guard, shield or other attachment that the manufacturer recommends. Prevent shocks. Ensure that the tools are properly grounded using a three-prong plug, are double-insulated (and are labelled as such), or are powered by a lowvoltage isolation transformer: this will protect users from an electrical shock. Check electric tools to ensure that a tool with a 3-prong plug has an approved 3-wire cord and is grounded. The three-prong plug should be plugged in a properly grounded 3-pole outlet. If an adapter must be used to accommodate a two-hole receptacle, the adapter wire must be attached to a known, functioning ground. NEVER remove the third, grounding prong from a plug.

• •

• • • • •

Replace open front plugs with dead front plugs. Dead front plugs are sealed and present less danger of shock or short circuit. Have a qualified electrician install a polarized outlet if the polarized, two-prong plug of a double-insulated tool does not fit in a two-hole receptacle. Double insulated tools use plugs having one prong that is visibly wider than the other. Test all tools for effective grounding with a continuity tester or a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) before use. Use only the kind of battery that the tool manufacturer specifies for the battery-powered tool that you are using. Recharge a battery-powered tool only with a charger that is specifically intended for the battery in that tool. Remove the battery from the tool or ensure that the tool is switched off or locked off before changing accessories, making adjustments, or storing the tool. Store a battery pack safely so that no metal parts, nails, screws, wrenches and so on can come in contact with the battery terminals; this could result in shorting the battery and possibly cause sparks, fires or burns.

100 years later and the Wairua Hydro Station is still going strong! The Wairua power station owned by Northpower was first built in the early 1900’s with this first of the

generators installed in 1916. With great care and maintenance these are still operating. The water canal intake was upgraded in 2009 which has since provided a much improved water flow to the station. The new weir flap gates have also given better water management of the river in flood situations and a much reduced maintenance cost for many years. The power station’s aging control

system has also been replaced to maximise output and reduce outages. A 4th generator was installed at the site in 2007 and with the latest improvements to the canal walls, control systems and increased capacity (5MW or 50,000 100 watt light bulbs) the power station can now run at its optimum level. This work has also resulted in a station that is now a solid robust structure and the life of the asset has also been extended well into the future.

Proudly Northland owned and operated, we collect transport, treat, recycle, recover and dispose of residential and commercial waste from Puhoi to Cape Reinga. Northland Waste is a vertically integrated Waste Company specialising in waste collection, transfer station operations, recycling and has a 50% shareholding in a Joint Venture Landfill (Puwera) with the Whangarei District Council. INVESTING IN SHARES Today’s investor faces many choices. Investments can be in shares, bonds, property, bank deposits, domestic or international assets, directly invested or via managed funds. By investing in shares in a public company listed on a stock exchange, you get the right to share in the future income and value of that company. Your total return (or loss) will comprise two elements: •

dividends paid out of the profits made by the company;

capital gains/losses made because you are able to sell your shares for more or less than you paid. Gains may reflect the fact that the company has grown or improved its performance or that investors consider that it has improved future prospects.

Any loss or gain in value is said to be ‘realised’ when you sell the shares. If you hold onto them the loss or gain is ‘unrealised’. The price of shares in any individual public listed company can vary from day to day. On any day some shares may go up in value and some down, depending on how investors view the prospects of each company. There are many complex factors which influence share prices on a daily basis and no one can accurately predict what price listed shares will be in the future. Overall the long-term trend is for the value of listed companies to increase at a rate higher than inflation. Therefore, by investing in a wide variety of companies operating in a range of industries and countries, an investor has a good chance of making long-term gains. Remember that in assessing the return from shares you

“Servicing the North for over 30 years”

Hubands Energy was awarded Best Small Solar PV Business award at the 2015 Sustainability Electricity Association of New Zealand annual industry awards. The award reflects the high levels of professionalism in all aspects of the company. With over 30 years experience in Northland, Hubands Energy should be top of your list for all of your home energy needs.

WHY SOLAR?

Typical on grid solar set up

The “winterless” north offers an ideal climate for the production of solar power, allowing you to convert the suns power into energy cost savings. This not only reduces your power bill, but your unused power can be exported back into the main power grid in exchange for a credit to your power account. As part of our tailored solutions process we work out the maximum cost savings for you when we quote on your individual solar system.

Why Choose Solar Power? • Affordable sustainable living • Protect the environment • Save money by reducing your power bill • Get credited for surplus power you produce • Increase your property value • Reduce your carbon footprint What is Solar Power? Solar Power or ‘Photovoltaic’ (PV) converts sunlight into energy. A solar panel soaks up photons from the sun and converts them into electrical charge. There are 2 different types of solar

systems.

“On grid” solar power involves solar panels being mounted to the roof or your home, school, marae or business. When sunlight hits the panels, DC power is produced. This power is then sent to a Solar Inverter with converts the DC electricity to AC power which can be used by your appliances. Any surplus power is then exported to the grid and credited against your electricity bill.

Typical off grid solar set up “Off grid” solar power is ideal for those who want to be completely self-sufficient. Solar panels are still mounted to the roof of your building, with the power produced supplied to an inverter/ charger which maintains and charges the storage batteries while also

converting the energy to AC power which can be used by your appliances. The stored energy can then be used to power different requirements within the house such as lighting.

How Much Can Solar Save Me? The savings will depend on the size of the system you decide to install. As a guide, you can expect to save $1,000 per year on a 3.0kw system (approximately 12 panels) over a 20.0sq metre roof area. This would be over 50% of your annual power consumption. (source Mitsubishi Black Diamond Solar Panels). If you decide to go with a bigger system, you could be saving over 90% of your annual power consumption.

Boosting health outcomes in Northland – a New Zealand success story…

Outgoing Manaia PHO boss Chris Farrelly ranks Northland’s Healthy Homes Te Tai Tokerau programme the most important and effective health initiative of his 25 year health career – and a stand-out for New Zealand. In fact, he believes insulating homes is the most permanent and positive health determinant a family can receive. The programme has seen around 8000 of Northland’s most at need homes retro-fitted with insulation since 2007. Insulating a further 7000 will complete the programme but that will require around $20 million more in funding. “The project has made a huge difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable people in Northland – it has been a thrill to see it happen,” says Mr Farrelly. “The cost to insulate a home is around $3000 and in the year to the end of June, 2016, a further 900 homes will have been insulated alone. This programme is critical for a region for Northland where we are still contending with rheumatic fever which has actually shocked us into a whole lot of actions.” On average the Government (through EECA, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) provides annual funding of around 60%, Foundation North 31% and Northland funders like Top Energy and Northpower 9%. But Mr Farrelly says more local funding would be welcomed by the governance group behind the project. “We feel it important to flag to other Northland businesses an opportunity to contribute funds to continue the programme in some form. Lots of small amounts will ensure we keep moving Northland ahead. There are 7000 more homes to insulate in Northland at which point the programme will be complete.

“For many years now, through the ‘Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes’ programme, EECA has contributed $60 for every $40 raised locally. So any corporate contribution from Northland businesses actually triggers more contribution from EECA and others. “The flow on effect of this is in employment. This home insulation programme has created jobs for 20 men in the insulation teams, many of whom have come from long term unemployment. That’s another positive for the North. “ So far around 4500 Far North homes have been insulated, more than 2500 Whangarei homes and over 800 Kaipara homes. “This is already a massive Northland success story (we firmly believe we have developed the premier model of the rest of NZ to adopt) and will be so much greater when house number 15,000 is insulated. It is something we can all do together because we are so much more effective as a team,” says an upbeat Mr Farrelly. Retro-fitting at-need Northland homes with insulation has dramatically improved health and educational outcomes for thousands of Northland children. And Mr Farrelly says there are also economic benefits through lower work absenteeism and the fact that money invested in the community has a three phase cycle. “What a lot of people don’t realise are the conditions many of these families live in. There can be families of ten sleeping in one room in winter because they need to provide each other heat. A lot of houses have no beds or curtains. Insulating these homes has a positive multi-generational impact.” #Studies published in the British Medical Journal and the American Journal of Public Health on insulating homes have pointed directly to improved health outcomes including: fewer exacerbations of respiratory illness; fewer general practitioner visits; less time off work and school; improved self-rated health; reduced hospitalisations for respiratory and coronary conditions.

Northland Container Gardening Guide

Colourful flowers, seasonal salads, microgreens and aromatic herbs are easy to grow in containers - perfect if you are short on space. Buy a coloured one for a feature or brighten up that’s dull spot on the porch. Containers should be placed in an area that receives plenty of sunlight. At least 5 hours sunlight a day is recommended and as many hours as you can for fruiting plants like tomatoes or cucumbers! The biggest key to success with all aspects of gardening is to get the foundations right. Healthy soil is especially important when growing in a limited area. Choose the right potting mix that supplies ample nutrients as well as creating the right soil consistency for healthy development for the green and colour above and the roots below the soil. Whangarei Landscape Supplies has a range of quality potting mixes available for different planting needs. Use good quality potting mixes that is suitable for extra special or expensive pot plants. Potting Mix is a light friable mix that provides the ideal porous conditions for growth and we believe in it so much, we guarantee your plants will grow! It is formulated to provide excellent growth for indoor plants, including ferns and palms. This mix sustains growth of heavy feeding plants such as vegetables and potted colour for three months, and up to nine months for certain indoor plants and is specifically designed to grow plants in containers and hanging baskets in outdoor areas. Outdoor Container Potting Mix also contains water granules to sustain the water requirements of the plant. This is ideal for plants such as flowering annuals and perennials. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONTAINER In addition to the perfect potting mix, the perfect container has to be chosen. Ask garden centre staff for advice or research the recommended sizes for particular plants, and

always make sure pots have ample drainage. Keep in mind plants grown in containers dry out quicker than garden plants, so regular watering is needed. WATERING Soil in pots and containers dries out quicker than soil in the garden. Specifically designed soil wetter helps to prevent this. The granular soil wetter channels water to the root zone where it is needed most. It promotes even water distribution so there is less water runoff and dry spots in potting mix and soils. Sprinkle water retention product on soils in pots, hanging baskets and grow bags every season or when repotting to further enhance water absorption and retention. Here are some other general water tips: • Water roots not foliage. • Water in the morning or evening to avoid water evaporation. • Water deeply twice a week rather than a little each day to encourage deep roots. FERTILISING A controlled release fertiliser within your potting mix will provide nutrients and some mixes such as Polyon Nutrients keep feeding for up to 12 months. For expert advice and tips come and see Whangarei Landscape supplies.

Pure, fresh allergen free air

BLOWING ALLERGIES AWAY You'd be hard pressed to find a kiwi that doesn't suffer, or knows someone who suffers from allergies. 1 in 3 New Zealanders are affected by allergies at one time or another, and more than 10% of our kids battle with symptoms every single day. HRV is on a mission to improve the invironment of every home in New Zealand. To help us on this mission we've partnered with Allergy New Zealand to help raise awareness and find relief for those who live with allergies. It’s a tough task to eradicate the problem. Every home contains harmful dust, toxins, pollen, allergens, and other airborne particles that all contribute to an environment that dust-mites love to live in. Humans, less so. Only HRV ventilation systems have a four-stage filtration process with Seta nano-fibre technology that purifies your air, leaving you with a cleaner home invironment. Something that’s not to be sneezed at.

Air and water. They’re the most essential elements we need to live. So why do we think so little about just what we’re breathing or drinking? Our passion at HRV is to make your whole home a lot healthier – and it can be with the world-leading solutions we’ve developed.

Allergy in New Zealand

1 in 4 NZ kids has asthma and the rate of environmental allergies, including hay fever, eczema, and dustmites, has doubled in 15 years. Most of the research points to the state of our damp, cold home invironments here in NZ and the air we’re subsequently breathing in.

Asthma NZ Sensitive Choice

It reduces the triggers for illness, like, mould, dust mites, allergens and pollen, by thoroughly ventilating the air in your home. For this reason our HRV Next Generation system was awarded the Asthma NZ Sensitive Choice badge, and it’s the only ventilation system in New Zealand to be part of this programme.

The firm conducted a survey of around 1,000 people and found that many individuals believe having a nice set of teeth can have a major impact on a person's career and romantic life. Over half of those polled believed a good smile could help an individual get a better job, while almost half believed it could help people make more friends. Conversely, three-fifths of respondents suggested that having bad teeth can prevent people from finding a partner. It was found that one in seven people had not been to the dentist in the last four years, while one in 25 had never been to the dentist. Being happy with your teeth can have a big impact on your confidence and this can affect your work and relationships. So it's surprising that so many people don't go for regular dental examinations. Even people who are currently happy with their teeth should pay attention to their dental health, as problems can happen at any time and get worse if not treated. www.selfgrowth.com Many diseases are linked to your oral health, including heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Dental problems have an indirect cost to society, with one in ten adults aged 18–64 years having taken, on average, 2.1 days off work or school in the previous year due to problems with their teeth or mouth.

CATARACTS Cataracts are the most common age-related occurrence in eyes but may be congenital. They may also develop as a result of diabetes, various chronic eye diseases, eye injury or excessive ultraviolet light. The lens becomes thicker and stiffer and appears yellow and cloudy. Eventually it may turn white, changing the colour of the pupil. A cataract may cause your vision to become fuzzy in a progressive fashion and may also be the cause of disabling glare. Symptoms you may notice include: 1.

your vision may be a little blurred, like looking through a cloudy glass

2.

light from the sun or bulb may seem bright or glaring

3.

when you drive at night, oncoming headlights may cause glare or halos

4.

colours may not appear as bright as they used to (many televisions have been fixed by cataract surgery)

5.

your glasses prescription may change and your optometrist may say they “cannot improve your vision with glasses”

6.

you may have double vision.

These symptoms can be signs of other problems. With cataracts, vision typically becomes more blurred, hazy or foggy although near vision may improve. How is a cataract treated? Cataracts cannot be cured by any type of medication, eye exercise, alternative therapy, diet or glasses. Surgery is the only way to treat a cataract. Once a cataract affects vision too much, a cataract removal operation is generally advised. This decision is usually made

in consultation with an eye specialist. Removal of cataracts is the most common eye operation and one of the most common surgical procedures performed in New Zealand today. It has a high rate of success due to modern methods used. It involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens implant. About artificial lenses The artificial lens is called an “Intraocular Lens Implant” (IOL). It is a transparent disc with a shape similar to the natural lens. Measurements of the eye will be undertaken by an IOL Master to determine the correct lens for your eye. Cataract surgery The operation is almost always done under local anaesthetic. The procedure we use is called Phacoemulsification - a 3mm incision is made in the front of the eye and the lens is broken into tiny pieces by a special machine that emits sound waves. The lens is suctioned out of the eye capsule. In this procedure the back half of the capsule (posterior capsule) is left in place to support the new lens. Once the cataract has been removed, an artificial lens is put in to replace it. These lenses usually correct for distance vision, therefore some patients will still need reading glasses post-op. Multifocals are also available but are not suitable for everyone. It usually takes approximately an hour and a half from the time you arrive at Kensington Hospital where the procedure will take place in their modern and friendly day stay unit. An overnight stay in hospital is not required. If you have no one to stay with you the night post-op, arrangements can be made for an overnight stay. Post-operative care consists of eye drops 4 times a day, a check-up 1 day post-op at the rooms and at 1 week by your specialist and then, if required, a visit to your optometrist at 6 weeks post-op. You will receive comprehensive pre- and post-op instructions before surgery.

hen it comes to servicing your car two of the biggest problems arememory and money. As long as the car is performing we just plain forget to get it checked and when we think we should, we justify not having it done becausemoney’s tight. It’s false economy of course and having the car clap out on a rainy winter’s night isn’t pleasant. It’s a good policy to establish a relationship with your mechanic. Most vehicle service providers are bound by consumer protection legislation and, if they’re part of a franchise or belong to a recognized servicing organisation, are additionally contractually bound to provide a certain standard of customer care. If you think you’re not being looked after well, change your provider. It’s a competitive world and you’re the customer. The Warrant of Fitness check acts as a service reminder of course andWOF rules were recently changed. Since 1 January 2014 all vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2004 now only require annual inspections for the lifetime of the vehicle.

From 1 July this year other WOF changes will be introduced: • After an initial inspection new vehicles won’t require aWOF inspection until the third anniversary of first registration • Vehicles less than three years old will be issued a WOF that expires on the third anniversary of first registration or 12 months after the currentWOF expires, whichever is the longest Kamo 09 435 1950 • Vehicles firstPanel registered& onPaint or after 1 January 2000 will require an annual inspection • Vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000 still require a six-monthlyWOF Colenso Street inspection. The EV highway Northland’s EV expansion Wellington was the first region to have public electric vehicle charging in New Zealand, and significant investment is now being made in Auckland infrastructure - but which region is the leader in accommodating plugin vehicles? It would be hard to find a region that has prepared more for the future than Northland, which has one of the most comprehensive charging networks in the country. So how has a semi-rural, and hardly wealthy, region come to prominence in the EV rollout? The answer is the local lines company North- power – which like Vector in Auckland is a consumer trust, feeding its profits back into the community. Northpower has 1200 staff, and as well as covering the Kaipara and Whangarei regions, offers network services under contract throughout the North Island, West Australia and the Pa- cific. According to public affairs manager Steve Macmillan, the decision to develop charging infrastructure stemmed from Northpower’s roll out of the Ultra-Fast Broadband fibre network in Whangarei. “A big part of our man- date and ethos is to enable the community,” Macmillan explains. “We saw what was happening with fibre, how itwas enabling people, and we thought let’s give them options for electric vehicles.” New Zealand’s first fast- charger, in central Whangarei, was opened by communications minister Amy Adams in May 2014. “We put the first fast charge station based out of our Alexander Street substation in the CBD of Whangarei powered by the Wairua hydro power station, which is turning 100 in September,” Macmillan explains. “It’s one of the oldest hydro schemes in the country and generates enough electricity to power 3500 average residential homes.” To get the market running, the company worked with Christchurch-importer EV imports to put EVs on its fleet, and then in the hands of others. “We put one, for example, in the hands of the Manaia PHO, which runs the Healthy Homes project, with backing from Northpower and others, insulating homes throughout Northland,” he says. “We now have eight EVs on our fleet.” There have been discussions that the Northpower sponsored Northland Emergency Services Trust may acquire an EV for its own use. “We have just introduced our first EV van (the Nissan e-NV200) for our community liaison officer to use. Now our fibre installers want to switch to the same model.” With one charger and a growing fleet, Northpower began to expand their network with destination chargers, adding 11 destination charging units at five locations on their own network. “At that point we said that was going to be it for us, but now we have started installing fast chargers for Charge. net.nz,” he

says. The network has spurred businesses in the region to install their own chargers. “A lot of people are starting to do it themselves – Educare for example - and that’s great, that’s what we want.” The lines-company hasn’t ruled out installing more. Macmillan says the impetus for the venture has come from network planning engineer Russell Watson, and network general manager Graeme Dawson. “Russell and Graeme have really pioneered it for Northpower, backed by the board of directors, and the Northpower Trust, who have quickly seen the impact on the community. “They say ‘build it and they (EVs) will come’, and it seems that way with the infrastructure. The region has more than 60 plug-in vehicles, many of them sold by Whangarei- dealer Cashback Cars, big proponents of vehicles such as the Leaf. Macmillan notes at two charger openings (Dargaville and Kaiwaka), customers drove away in cars purchased from the dealer. “Cashback Cars, and good on them, and others, have started to ride off the back of the publicity and the push that Northpower, Joe Camuso from the Northland Regional Council and others - such as Charge.net and the REV-UP group - have given EVs. “What we are trying to do is make it really easy for people to understand and know where things are in terms of the charge stations, charge times and what the capabilities of the cars are.” Northpower has undertaken run-out tests on their cars, and continues to work with the University of Canterbury on research – most recently on the ideal port- able EV charger for helping motorists who run out of charge between EV stations. This work has dove-tailed into initial discussions with the Automobile Association in developing ways EVs can be helped by roadside assistance services. Are Aucklander’s with EVs being drawn to the region by the network? “They are because they can charge their cars with ease when they are heading to their Northland bach for the weekend - and these are often people with money,” Macmillan notes. “We see it as a good thing for the north. “Having -fast charging points at Kaiwaka, Dargaville, Tikipunga and Kawakawa - that Steve and Dee from Charge.net have put in in less than six months – along with multiple other charge points in the region, is making it easy and accessible for Aucklanders to get up here - and for Northlanders to head south. It has taken the pain factor, the what-if factor, away.” Macmillan indicates they don’t expect the government to assist in the development of charging networks. “Why should they give us a handout,” he explains. “If they think it’s good for New Zealand Inc, good on them. Simon Bridges will step up and do it, but I think we have proven that we can do it ourselves. Mind you, a move to EV fleets for central and local government would be a great way to fast track a roll- over of EVs into the second hand vehicle market as those fleets are rolled over in years to come.”

VECTOR EXTENDS ITS EV CHARGER NETWORK

Vector’s electric vehicle charger programme is being further extended today with the launch of two more rapid chargers along with a standard charger in Newmarket. The two rapid chargers, which can each replenish EV batteries in just 15 to 30 minutes, and the standard charger, will be unveiled by Transport Minister, the Hon Simon Bridges at Vector’s Newmarket substation at 11.00am. “It is our plan to install the right charging solutions at the right places,” says Simon Mackenzie, Vector’s CEO. “In the next six months, Vector will install at least another 13 rapid chargers. “Newmarket is an excellent site in that you can get easy motorway access northbound and southbound so rapid chargers are a good fit, but Newmarket also boasts movie theatres and great restaurants, in which case drivers can use the standard charger

Efficient

while they are enjoying these facilities.” Mackenzie says Vector will continue to expand the charger network as EVs become more commonplace in New Zealand. Vector was the first to install two rapid chargers in the CBD, along with two standard chargers at Britomart car park, a standard charger at the NorthWest shopping centre and two standard chargers at its Newmarket headquarters. AECT Chairman, William Cairns says the charging infrastructure has been made possible with the support of the Auckland Energy Consumer Trust, via a fund which has historically been used for undergrounding projects in the AECT district and has recently been extended to include new technology such as solar and battery and EV chargers. “The Trust is supportive of Vector’s investment in new technology and is delighted to see this initiative gaining momentum”.

Electric highway taking shape

out of what is believed to be the largest fast charging network in the Southern Hemisphere.

Steve West’s vision is for an electric highway running the length of New Zealand is fast becoming a reality. Charge.Net.NZ currently has 15 fast charging stations open throughout New Zealand and plans to lift that figure beyond 40 by Christmas 2016. In total the aim is more than 100 fast charge stations the length of New Zealand by the end of 2018. Already there are four in Northland – Kaiwaka, Dargaville, Tikipunga and Kawakawa. West, the CEO of Charge.Net.NZ has partnered with six of New Zealand’s electricity network lines companies Northpower, Powerco, Wellington Electricity, Orion, Alpine Energy and PowerNet - which together deliver electricity to over 37% of New Zealand. “Northpower has the same vision as us and has been a significant partner in leading the charge in Northland putting in a number of their own charge stations from as early as 2014, together with many local EV advocates,” says West.

He says customers can sign up quickly online and an RFID card is then couriered to them giving access to the rapid charger network – a simple tap against the front of the charger and the machine activates. An average 20 minute fast charge costs $7-$10 and provides a range of around 100km. His interest with electric vehicles (EV) started in childhood, inspired by Usborne books painting a future of elegantly simple and efficient personal transportation. “As an EV owner, I was increasingly frustrated at waiting for that future to arrive in New Zealand so I set about doing something about it. Data from around the globe on electric vehicle uptake clearly shows that fast charging networks greatly improve adoption and customer confidence, and encourage more people and businesses to adopt electric vehicles in their personal and business fleets. 1057 Electric Vehicles were registered with the Ministry of Transport by the end of February 2016.

THE WHANGAREI SPCA AT A GLANCE Our centre is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm. We are located at 143 Kioreroa Road, next to the Re:Sort centre and Cowleys Party Hire. The Whangarei SPCA inspectorate covers an area from the Brynderwyns across to the Kaipara Harbour, up through Dargaville to just south of Kaikohe, to Waiomio south of Kawakawa, then back across to the east coast (to just north of Whangaruru North). Around 3000 animals are brought to our centre annually, and each year we investigate around 900 animal abuse complaints.

Our Inspectors are on call 24/7 for investigation of animal cruelty and neglect and accidents & emergencies. We receive a small amount of funding from the Government towards welfare investigations, but no financial help from Whangarei District Council, the Northland Regional Council and are not eligible for Lotteries Grants

We could not exist without volunteers and donations from the public! 09 438 9161 Kioreroa Road

PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS – stop rubbish fires destroying your property. The Fire Service attends hundreds of rubbish fires every year. These fires are almost always deliberately lit and come at a huge cost of around $100m annually, not to mention your business continuity.

Secure any material that could be set alight – for example rubbish, cardboard, wooden crates and the like, to prevent it becoming a fire hazard. Follow this checklist to keep your business safe: • Locate bins away from buildings • Store combustible waste in metal rubbish containers with self-closing lids. • Products and materials that need to be stored outside must be in limited pile sizes and well away from buildings and fencelines. • Limit public access to your building and yards.

• Arrange to have waste collected weekly to minimise rubbish on site, especially at weekends • Define safe designated smoking areas for staff. • Lock bin lids when not in use, overnight, and weekends. • Check your perimeter fencing is secure • Consider security lighting and surveillance equipment.

For more information on how to keep your business safe, contact Fire Safety on (09) 430-1256

Ever wanted to fly a helicopter?

those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Now you can in NEST’s flight simulator which is a virtual replica of the Sikorsky S–76 helicopters our pilots fly in real life rescue situations.

Younger children are also able to sit in the back of the simulator while being taken on a flight.

Built using the wreck of a Japanese Coastguard aircraft that was damaged during Japan’s 2011 tsunami, it is Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) certified and the NEST team is ready to teach you how to fly this state of the art machine.

Flights are guided by our pilots. We recommend booking your flight experience as our schedule fills up fast.

Located at Whangarei Airport the simulator, or Flight Training Device (FTD), is surrounded by a curved 270-degree screen which produces high-grade city and landscape visuals for the ultimate authentic flying experience. While the helicopter remains static, it’s feels as if you are flying, accelerating and hovering in the air – but without leaving the ground.

Caring for Northland since 1988

And it’s no easy ride, with pilots and passengers potentially suffering air sickness, and crashing a real possibility. The surprise bonus of the FTD has been the realism of the visual effects which brings almost any location around the world to life – from Auckland and the Bay of Islands through to New York and London. A favourite flight path for many pilots has been to fly under the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and happily not one has hit either the water or the bridge. Children aged 8 years and over are able to fly the simulator, and

UPWARDS AND ONWARDS… A facelift to the current airport will see it equipped to serve Whangarei for another 10 to 15 years, while Whangarei District Council searched for a site for a new airport. The upgrade was fuelled by the larger 50-seat Q300 aircraft now exclusively landing at Whangarei Airport. The project was funded by $210,000 from Whangarei District Council, $210,000 from the Crown and $600,000 from the council’s Airport Reserve Fund. There will be room for up to 100 seats, instead of the current 50, self check-in kiosks, an improved baggage claim area and potential for a laptop charging station and children’s play area. The expansion of the terminal, to about double its current size, followed the completion of a new apron and taxiway, new toilets and the addition of about 20 carparks. More lighting and CCTV will also be installed after the upgrade is complete.

So where is the value in a funeral? By not having 104a funeral service for a loved one, we run the risk of glossing over our loss and trying to continue with our lives as though nothing has happened. But it has. One of the most traumatic events in anyone’s life is the death of a family member or close friend. Arranging some form of final farewell increases our ability to deal with the trauma we are experiencing and helps us start to move on with our lives.

YOUR LOCAL

FUNERAL DIRECTORS

There are a number of elements that make up the value of a funeral.

Reality Funerals create reality out of a surreal situation. They draw a line in the sand and mark the occasion. Creating a before and an after. This realisation of the situation is important in that its start to move us from what was to what is.

Recall Funerals help us to convert our relationship with the deceased, from one of present to one of memory, by providing a forum to recalling memories of our loved one. Often the get together after a funeral is the time that recall plays its most important role.

Whangarei & Northland Freephone 0800 66 77 47 www.morrisandmorris.co.nz

Support Funerals are social gatherings and bring together people who care and who can start to build a support network. This support is vital in our healing process we need other people to lean on.

Expression Funerals help us turn our raw grief into a more productive period of mourning for the deceased, by allowing us space and time to express our feelings openly.

Meaning Funerals bring meaning, they make us question and contemplate our lives and those of our loved ones by placing them and us into context. These are the crucial reasons why we have funerals. We are not advocating that every family should use a funeral director; we would like them to of course. We believe that it is the best way for families and friends to achieve a meaningful farewell; by utilising the skills of a funeral expert. What we are saying is that families need to mark the death of a loved one in a way that brings these elements of Reality, Recall, Support, Expression and Meaning together like the pieces of a jigsaw, to make a meaningful funeral. The value is not in the amount of money spent but in the act of remembrance that is created at a funeral.

Government broadband programs triple NZ internet speeds Two independent reports have found New Zealand’s UltraFast Broadband (UFB) and Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) programmes continue to deliver faster internet speeds, says Communications Minister Amy Adams. “In 2008, average broadband speeds were around 2.7 Megabits per second. By the end of 2015, average speeds have more than tripled to 9.3 Mbps,” says Ms Adams. “The December 2015 Akamai State of the Internet report found that in the past year, average speeds rose from 7.3 Mbps to 9.3 Mbps, representing a 27 per cent increase in speeds for connected New Zealanders. “Alongside this, TrueNet’s latest update on RBI connections found the Government’s scheme is growing by about seven per cent each quarter.” Rural New Zealanders covered under the first phase of RBI are now able to access websites at a rate three times faster than they would otherwise have been able to. “Faster and more reliable connectivity is vital to all New Zealanders, and the Government’s UFB and RBI rollouts are lifting speeds and access right across the country.

“The strong progress of the rollout means more than 875,000 New Zealand households, businesses, schools and hospitals are now able to connect to UFB, while almost 280,000 rural New Zealanders are now able to connect to either fixed wireless broadband or improved copper broadband services. “I look forward to more and more New Zealanders gaining connectivity to high-speed internet,” says Ms Adams. Key statistics from the Akamai State of the Internet report: • Average speeds rose from 7.3 Mbps in 2014 to 9.3 Mbps, a 27 per cent increase • Peak connection speeds increased to 42.8 Mbps, a 25 per cent increase on the previous year • The number of New Zealanders accessing over 15 Mbps has almost tripled over the last year Scoop.co.nz - April 2016

Of the 3000 businesses in Whangarei, 500 are connected to Northpower Fibre’s UFB network.

Mr Mason says he’d like to see all businesses capitalising on the opportunities afforded by UFB.

“I was at a telecommunications conference recently where some research statistics were shared and it was quite telling. Digitally enabled SMEs have revenues 20% higher than those less engaged,” says Mr Mason. “What was surprising was that only 22% of businesses use the internet for social networking, 21% for email marketing, 13% to sell products online and in the retail/hospitality trade 30% have no web presence. Those figures are incredibly low for this day and age – especially when you consider so many cities in New Zealand have access to world-class UFB fibre networks.

Mr Mason says everyone he has spoken to who is on the Northpower Fibre network say UFB fibre has saved them time and money.

check the coverage tab to see if fibre is at your doorstep.

“Based on that, why wouldn’t you connect to UFB. If I was a business owner I’d far prefer making more money and having more time for leisure activities at the end of the week. Mr Mason says at 27%, uptake on the Northpower Fibre UFB network is the highest of any local fibre companies in New Zealand and there are a number of business and residential areas in Whangarei where uptake has reached 50%. “People in Whangarei have certainly embraced the benefits of fibre and we appreciate that level of support. In February we topped our record monthly connection figure of 300 and we had an impressive March. We have more than 6000 people out of a possible 20,000 connected to Northpower Fibre and are likely to top 9000 by December 2016,” says Mr Mason.

Choose your prefered broadband provider and

get connected.

“Fibre really is a game-changer for people and is proving a huge enabler for our local community and economy,” says Mr Mason. TUANZ CEO Craig Young says high internet use firms are four years ahead of the average firms and high internet use firms are 6% more productive than the average. “When you consider 81% of consumers rate the internet as their important source of information, 86% buy goods online and 47% prefer online shopping to physical stores, there is immense opportunity for businesses to take advantage of UFB fibre networks,” says Mr Young. “So we are concerned at the relatively slow uptake by businesses in the SME space as this is where the majority of economic benefits to the local, and national economy, will come from the UFB initiative. There is a great opportunity for Whangarei businesses to embrace right now.”

Uber Group was established in 2003 to provide wireless broadband to remote Northland communities. We are a privately owned Northland company staffed by locals and now provide both wireless and fibre broadband (including phone) to residential and business customers in Northland. Uber’s key features are the speed and reliability of our broadband services, high data caps, competitive monthly pricing, high end technology which minimises customer faults calls, and best of all our locally-based staff. You can find us at 53 Port Road Whangarei if you have any questions, or just want to bring us wine and chocolates (yes, people do!). We own and run our own wireless network which now covers around 80% of the land area of Northland, from Snells Beach and Warkworth up to Te Kao in the north.

www.uber.co.nz

We are also the only local provider to offer fibre broadband in the Whangarei urban area.

Voice over IP is changing the way business communicates.

Well now you don’t have to put up with that. IP Telephony is revolutionising the way business telecommunications are provided.

Why do people change to Voice over IP and IP telephony?

0800-567-567 (option 1) www.maxicom.co.nz 20 Herekino Street, Whangarei If you are not on VOIP yet then you may be paying too much. Call us today and let us show you how easy it is to change to this incredible technology. Are you tired of paying too much for your business phone land lines and getting substandard service and advice from call centres who don’t know your site, don’t know your business and don’t know who you are? With Voice over IP and IP telephony from Maxicom you can change that today.

So what is Voice over IP? It’s simply a method to deliver your phone lines over the internet instead of over copper wires. Right now your carrier charges you a line rental for each line you have. This can range between $39.95 and $65.00 per month per line. You have also got to pay for your calls on top of that. Then you also have to pay for your broadband. The average small business with 4 lines normally has a phone bill of between $500.00 and $1000.00 per month!!

The overwhelming majority of our customers who have transitioned to VoIP technology do so to save money, to receive better service and to get better features that offer real business benefit. If you are not using VoIP for your business then you are probably paying too much for your telephone service.

Here are the facts. • • • • • • •

VoIP saves you money. No more line rentals. One monthly fee which includes a huge free-calling allowance. VoIP adds feature benefits like call recording, voice mail, mobile voicemail, caller ID, audio conferencing without changing your phone system. VoIP is reliable. This is a carrier grade service offering reliability and redundancy and is a business grade service. In most cases there is no capital outlay. Keep your existing phone numbers. Many of our customers have saved up to 50% off their phone bill and in some cases up to 80%. Deal with local people who know your site. When you call us you talk to an engineer and not a call centre agent who doesn’t have any technical skills.

Call us today on 0800-567-567 and select option 1 and let us show you how to save money and get an incredible phone service that offers real business benefit.

Heavy vehicle specialists, CDL are driving forward again When Brent Butler & John Sanderson started Warkworth Diesel 14 years ago it was the first step on a journey that has taken in many great moments. With the purchase (several years ago) of Intertruck Distributors in Whangarei and the re-naming of the business as Commercial Diesel Ltd (CDL), Brent and John have never been ones to sit still. That purchase made them Northland parts and service dealers for Kenworth, Daf, Iveco and a regional dealer for Castrol Oils. Then, some 18 months ago CDL moved into a purpose built facility offering; COF capability, brake roller testing system, in- house auto electrical and drive through servicing bays with a full length pit for over dimension vehicles. Put simply, the CDL operations in Whangarei and Warkworth have been pumping.

Now, another step forward, with the announcement CDL are becoming the Northland Authorised Service Centre for CAL>ISUZU. CAL, a heavyweight in the national transport sector were started more than 25 years ago in Hamilton by brothers Ashok and Raman Parbhu. They are delighted that they have found a service provider in CDL, who shares their same customer facing values. Today, the award winning CAL>ISUZU operation have sales, service and parts departments operating in Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga and an additional high-tech engineering facility based at Hamilton, which links into their entire operation. As Managing Director Ashok Parbhu will tell you, “The addition of CDL to our Northland offering is tremendously positive for both businesses, It’s all about adding more value, service and flexibility to both our client bases”. Good times indeed for CDL and CAL customers in Northland.

Fat Camel Cafe ISRAELI FOOD - FRESH - HEALTHY - TASTY

MINISTRY OF HEALTH WARNING - FALAFEL IS ADDICTIVE The Fat Camel is modelled after a typical Tel-Aviv Café, where food is the centre of social life. Where the builder meets the banker, where people can relax, come in flip flops or a suit and feel comfortable. Back home you can see kids finishing homework in the café, people playing games of Chess or Backgammon. A place to drop in and have a quick bite before the movies or a more leisurely meal shared with good friends over a glass of wine, where you are remembered and can find good conversation. We want to give that same sense of intimacy and atmosphere to Whangarei, a place that you can always come and feel welcome at any time.
