FROM THE PUBLISHER Congratulations on your excellent choice to pick up The Business Finder 2022. We appreciate and need people like you, who actively go out to see what smaller, local businesses have to offer. It is no coincidence that this issue of The Business Finder is our biggest issue yet. Now more than ever, we are starting to understand and value the contribution local businesses make to keep the economy going.

The good thing that came out of it, is the hard lessons we had to learn. To appreciate anything locally produced. They are the people who look after us when we need them most – let’s keep that going when you have a choice who to support. Long after the amount spend is forgotten the service is remembered. Tēnā koutou katoa, Welcome to the latest edition of The Business Finder. For the past few years, Whangārei District has been experiencing significant growth both in population size and in economy. While the effects of COVID-19 are being felt on a global and national scale, our local businesses are likewise struggling to continue operations. Luckily, there is something we can do to help our local business owners – and it’s well within our power to do so.

We all win when we choose to buy locally, supporting local businesses and service providers. By spending our dollars locally, we spread the flow of wealth around our own community and contribute to business growth for the future. Using this locally owned and operated Whangarei Business Finder is a great way to support our local retailers and businesses. Inside this latest edition, you will find an easy-to-use directory for local businesses along with other handy features like a calendar showing public holidays, a dining guide and emergency numbers. Whangārei District has proven to have a resilient, community-focused mindset, with many businesses going above and beyond to care for their customers during our series of COVID-19 lockdowns. I have been impressed by the innovation shown by our local businesses, and most importantly the kindness towards their scared and stressed customers. These are indeed trying times; I thank you all for continuing to support each other with care and compassion. Use The Business Finder to support our businesses, and make Whangārei an even better place to live, work, play, and invest!

Latest news & updates from around our Network

Investing in Northland’s future Northpower’s newly updated Asset Management Plan outlines the planned investment in our electricity network over the next ten years. Northpower is responsible for delivering reliable, resilient and safe electricity services today and into the future for our communities of Whangārei and Kaipara. This 2021 Asset Management Plan enables that future and sets out a roadmap to support our customers as they increasingly generate and store their own electricity, sell it to others, and use the network to power their electric vehicles.

Our network

23

Preparing for the future

Northpower plans to spend around 30% of capital expenditure on growth related projects to cater for the region’s population increase, including a new substation in Waipu.

We’re transitioning our network control system to a new advanced control system, which has enhanced cyber security, inbuilt safety features and importantly will be able to provide us with visibility and control to support smart energy technologies (such as solar panels, and electric vehicles).

Replacing assets 60% of the capital expenditure will be spent renewing aging assets – both our substations and overhead and underground lines. Many of our substation assets were installed in the 1950s and 60s and are now reaching end of life. Our plan outlines a targeted replacement programme to ensure this equipment is replaced to ensure resilience and reliability of the network. Collaborative workspace demand increasing A start up business model launched in 2016 that offered office work space for short term hire has grown so much that one office has turned into two commercial hot-desk premises in Whangarei’s CBD. But if you are on the hunt for a hot desk you’d better get in quick as there are only a handful of spaces left! Workspace was the brainchild of Lisa and Brett Halvorson when they converted an old mechanic workshop on Finlayson Street into a multi-hot desk environment with numerous meeting rooms. Their funky but rustic fit-out of Workspace was designed to capture the imagination of entrepeneurs and business people alike. But not satisfied with one location and seeing demand for their business offering grow, they looked for other opportunities. When COVID struck in 2020, the couple decided it was time to ramp up their business model. Their search for additional locations saw them develop Pivot in Reyburn Street which they opened in November 2020. It is infrastructure the couple believe is essential in helping boost the local economy by removing expensive set-up

costs for business owners. As a Parafed Board member Ms Halvorson has ensured the buildings are on ground level with full disability access so the environment is totally inclusive. They still cater for short term desk rental but have landed a bunch of long-term loyal clients who have simply never moved out! “Our aim has always been to help entrepeneurs, businesses and government departments do business easier by providing an affordable office solution. The focus of my team is to help grow people and Northland businesses from throughout the Kaipara, Whangarei and Far North Districts,” says Ms Halvorson. Tenants have access to desks, Wi-Fi, scanners, printers, meeting rooms (some which can seat up to 50 people), kitchen, shower and bathroom facilities – and they can come and go as they please. “People can move around our locations and stay for as little or as long as they like. We are a one stop shop so people just need to turn up with their lap top and they are away. Initially our focus was providing a facility for locals but we quickly realised that the concept was being embraced by people across Northland and as word has spread, from throughout New Zealand and Australia. “We have people based here working for

companies in Australia, the US and England. Numerous Government departments utilise our services along with entities like Northpower, Refining NZ, Gas and Tyre, Northland DBH, I Have a Dream, Driving Miss Daisy, Jim’s Mowing, purpose Built Careers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Massage Therapists, Communication Specialists and more. “Having such diversity creates a really vibrant and creative space. And because the space is neutral, people use our locations for performance reviews, one on ones and HR mediation. The landscape with how people work has certainly changed dramatically since COVID, and we can’t see demand for our spaces diminishing which is really good for the region,” says Ms Halvorson. Desk space is $20 for a half day or $35 for a full day, while small meeting rooms are $45 for four hours and $75 for a day. Large board rooms are $30 an hour, $60 for a half day or $100 for a full day. Permanent desks are $130 per week.

Why should I use a Business Broker? An overvalued estimate by a broker in the hope of listing you, will damage your ability to make key decisions.

With a general listing, the business owner can expect:

Good business brokers will give you a fair and honest appraisal based on the market – not as a way of securing your listing.

Rushed or limited preparation – risking future litigation… Compromised confidentiality through wide exposure to as many potential buyers as possible as quickly as possible

Once your business is appraised, the marketing and sale process is governed by the terms agreed with you, so it is vital that everyone is on the same page.

Discouraging potential buyers who cannot act immediately. Big decisions take time for people who want to make smart choices.

Finding the right buyer – who is not just interested in the price but able to actually operate the business – will allow the sale process to achieve the best price and terms for both buyer and seller.

A bias to accept first offers as soon as possible for a quick sale – before a chance to compare or negotiate competitive counter-offers.

Listing with an A+ business broker and following diligent and transparent process means client involvement can be kept to a minimum.

Pressure to accept a discounted price to offset uncertainties or lack of information that cannot be determined due to time pressure.

You need to concentrate on keeping your business ticking and in healthy order, not being distracted by the ins-and-outs of the sale process.

So the pitfalls of the general listing process is a race to produce a buyer at possibly the minimum price acceptable.

Confidentiality is of the utmost importance at all times. Along the way, your broker will help analyse and evaluate offers and any special conditions associated with the sale.

The ingredients of a good business broker. Integrity: They need to earn your trust. After all, they are dealing with your livelihood – and what is likely to be your retirement funds! Experience: It takes a long time to learn the ins and outs of the business sales game. It is complex; each transaction can be a lengthy process and involving skilled negotiation, accountancy, and business nous. Assessment: with knowledge gained from selling similar businesses in New Zealand. Lateral thinking: A capacity for lateral thinking is essential to get around potential deal-killers which arise. Having been down the path many times enables us to see problems coming before they hit. Empathy: to hold negotiations together in complex transactions. Negotiation Expertise: Probably the most important role. We know the virtually unlimited variations that are available in structuring a sale. This only comes with experience. Market values: Every business is unique and appraising them is a complex skill. Requiring market knowledge Exposure: The Broker will ensure your business is exposed to the maximum number of eligible buyers ensuring the price is maximised

By using a sole agency, ‘feedback loops’ in communication enables dealing with objections and questions, that will inevitably arise, in a clear and steady way. By appointing a sole agent, a business owner can expect:  Targeting of purchasers in order of suitability.  Time to evaluate the business correctly at each stage.  Confidentiality.  Commitment to the project, confident in a process that is appropriately managed.

Why sell through one brokerage? A sole agency process provides better results for the vendor every time. Selling a business is not like selling a house! The process requires the commitment of all parties to achieve an optimal result. Unlike a house, a business is dynamic and in a constantlychanging environment. For this reason, a business sales specialist needs to create a level of empathy and trust with both owner and purchaser sufficient to work through potential ‘deal breakers’ that can arise during the process.

Austrian migrant hopes to normalise te reo Māori throughout Aotearoa Julian Svadlenak moved to New Zealand in 2013 along with his parents and sister. Originally from Austria, 24-year-old Julian Svadlenak has been on a mission to learn te reo Māori for the past 3 years. Julian discovered his love for te reo Māori in 2019 while working as a security guard at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA) and began his journey after speaking with the kaiako (teachers) during his shifts. “The view points or the whakaaro Māori resonated with me and made me feel at home. I feel very comfortable and natural in it,” says Julian, who moved to New Zealand in 2013 with his parents and sister. As well as his law degree, Julian credits his reo Māori studies with helping him secure his current job as a policy advisor for Waikato-Tainui.

His mahi (job) has also given him the opportunity to expand on his reo Māori knowledge. “I’ve been really lucky in my environment. I’ve had people around me that I can practice with at both university and mahi. As well as my deep passion for te ao Māori and te reo Māori.” As part of Mahuru Māori, Julian has made a commitment to speak only Māori for the first half of the day, with the exception of some work hui (meetings) involving external people. Julian’s motivation to take up the Mahuru Māori challenge came from his desire to normalise te reo Māori being spoken all throughout Aotearoa. “The more it’s heard, the more it’s made normal. We should make a considered effort because the more we do it the less likely it will be a māngere thing to fall back into reo Pākehā.” After completing his Level 2 Te Ara Reo Māori Certificate in 2019, Julian skipped to Level 5 Te Rōnakitanga ki te Reo

Kairangi and is now completing his Level 6 Diploma in Te Aupikitanga ki te Reo Kairangi with TWoA. Through the help and support of the TWOA kaiako, Julian is confident he will continue his reo Māori journey and begin a Level 7 Diploma in Te Pīnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi next year. “The kaiako have been very patient with all the tauira, accommodating to what each tauira needs. So even if you have a higher skill level, they will still challenge you,” says Julian. He is hopeful that more people will take up the opportunity to learn te reo Māori, including his own parents. “If you want to learn, there’s never a wrong time to start. Just a kupu (word) a day goes a long way if you think about it. 365 days in a year, you’ll know alot of kupu at the end of it.”

Research by Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) has revealed over a third of Kiwis have experienced a serious situation in the water, and continue to underestimate the danger posed by our waterways. Under five is the best time to start learning to swim, so that by age eight all the key components are in place – body position, head position, streamlining and breathing technique. Swimming lessons will help build your child’s confidence as they face new and difficult tasks in their learning environments. For young children, learning is a constant process. Every day they are learning new things about the world and their abilities. And this only increases when they go to school. So by having a regular activity like swimming lessons, it can help balance out any perceived failures by providing them with a comfort zone in the pool where they feel confident.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

At the recent SEANZ Tomorrow’s Energy Today Annual Conference, the Best ; Off Grid Implementation Award (Runner Up) was won by the Matekohe Limestone Island Solar Project. In 2020 Northpower and Hubands Energy teamed up to completely upgrade the ranger’s house off-grid solar system on Matekohe Limestone Island in Whangarei. The only power on the island was a small, dated 12V off-grid system that was failing to provide enough power for the ranger and his family living there. Running power was far too costly, so an off-grid solution was the perfect answer to this challenging problem. Running power cables from the mainland to the island was going to be far too costly. Northpower approached Hubands to install a new solution that would suit both this family and new ranger families in the future. The island is only accessible by boat so staff from Hubands and Northpower enjoyed many trips across the water with the ranger and his family. The ranger was very involved in the project, bringing all the equipment and the Hubands installation team across every day.

Over the last summer the data from the battery system showed that enough energy was stored in the battery to ensure that the back-up auto-start generator only needed to be used twice. The Honda auto-start generator is required for whenever the weather is bad for days on end. The new system has proven to be incredibly reliable and has catered for the rangers perfectly. Northpower was delighted to sponsor this project as the conservation and education work on Matekohe Limestone Island is invaluable to the community. ‘‘We are absolutely delighted to receive this award for an off-grid solar project we installed in conjunction with Northpower that we are all very proud of,’’ says Warren Hubands from Hubands.

www.hubands.co.nz | www.northpower.com Below: Warren Huband (left) (Hubands Energy), Russell Watson (right) (Northpower)

After removing the old 12Vsystem, the Hubands team began work on installing the new system. It was a great learning opportunity for some of Northpower’s junior cadets to also be on site to learn more about solar installations and off-grid solutions. A lot of the ranger’s power usage was during daylight, so a system was installed that gave the best self-consumption during the day from solar panels, with excess energy being fed into a Power-plus Premium lithium battery bank for use in the evenings.

Toyota Land Cruiser gets a major refresh in its 70th year. The Formidable Off-Roader… With a 70-year legacy of being the formidable off roader, the Land Cruiser badge is Toyota’s longest selling car. With over 10 million vehicles sold globally, the development of Land Cruiser considers that it will be used in every corner of the world. Launched in August 1951 as the “Toyota Jeep BJ”, Toyota has consistently developed versions that cater to customer needs, without sacrificing the reliability, durability, and drivability on backroads. Land Cruiser remains the benchmark for go-anywhere, conquer-anything four-wheel drive vehicles, that are an integral part of kiwi life.

system. The new Land Cruiser 300 has all those attributes and more. It remains the benchmark for a go-anywhere, conquer-anything four-wheel drive. It marries that extreme functionality with a premium interior fit-out, contemporary exterior styling and the latest in driver assistance technology. The new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 (LC300) is the next evolution of the iconic Land Cruiser brand; the finer details add a modern edge to the 4WD off-roader, which will be sold exclusively with a 225kW 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 mated to an all-new 10 speed automatic transmission when it arrives in New Zealand. The LC300 has exceptional towing capability towing a 3,500kg braked trailer load with ease. New V6 Twin-Turbo Diesel engine adds more power and torque

In New Zealand’s rugged terrain there are times when you just need a big strong diesel engine, a ladder chassis, and a terrific four-wheel drive system - the new addition Land Cruiser 300 has this and more. This latest addition to the badge performs, drives, and tows as you would expect of a Land Cruiser.

New 10 Speed automatic improves the driving experience and adds fuel efficiency GAZOO Racing adds Land Cruiser to the GR Sport portfolio Northland Toyota is now taking orders with delivery expected from October 2021.

Globally launched today, the new Land Cruiser 300 epitomises the quality, reliability, durability, and safety that customers have come to expect of the Land Cruiser badge, in an all-new modern package. In New Zealand’s rugged terrain there are times when you just need a big strong diesel engine, a ladder chassis, and a terrific four-wheel drive

RECYCLING Non-official bags must be 65 litres or less (large kleensak or black trash sack for example). Oversized or garden bags, even if only partially filled, won't be collected. Each household is entitled to two recycling bins: one red bin - for plastic and metal recycling (i.e. type one and type two plastics, tins or aluminium cans)

GLASS

Yes: glass bottles and jars - with lids removed.

METAL

Larger lids (e.g. jam jars) should be unscrewed from glass jars and placed in your red recycle bin.

Please squash cans flat to reduce volume.

Typically steel lids are lined with a very thin layer of plastic. Because of the high-temps used to recycle metal, it's burned off. No: window glass, light bulbs, crystal, ceramics/pottery, drinking glasses, or broken glass.

PLASTIC

Yes: aluminium drink cans, clean foil plates, steel food cans, empty aerosol containers.

PAPER AND CARDBOARD

Yes: all plastics marked '1' or '2' (except containers of motor oil, please see below). Maximum size of 4 litres for all plastic containers - larger ones cannot be collected at kerb side as they take up too much space in the truck.

Yes:newspapers, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, flattened cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, cartons, old phone books.

Plastic bottles need to be rinsed, squashed flat (if possible), remove the lids and put it in your rubbish.

Make sure card is folded so it is smaller than your recycle bin. All paper and card should be flattened and placed beside your recycle bin. You can tie it in a bundle, or put in a plastic bag.

No: plastic bags.

No:plastic coated paper and card - for example, cardboard milk and juice containers.

Tips for kerbside collection:

Remember to wrap any sharp objects before putting them in the rubbish bag. Please double-bag tissues or other potentially hazardous items. Plastic bottles need to be rinsed, squashed flat (if possible), remove the lids before you put them in your rubbish. If you have more items than can fit into a standard recycling bin or rubbish bag, please keep the excess until the next week's collection or take it to a rubbish and recycling station. Whiteware, hazardous waste, and e-waste goes to rubbish and recycling stations.

Recycling

one blue bin - for glass recycling (i.e. glass bottles and jars clean, unbroken, any colour)

WHY MUST WE RECYCLE? New Zealand may be perceived as clean and green by the rest of the world, but we have significant problems in NZ. In New Zealand we discard 15.5 million tonnes of waste each year. That is 3,200kg for every kiwi! Right now we only recycle 28% of this waste. To make matters worse, developed, or high-income, countries have an ecological footprint five times that of developing (low-income) countries. The earth can viably reproduce renewable resources (including cropland, grazing land, forests and fisheries) for the current population if humans keep their demands at 1.8 global hectares (gha) per person.

We need to change our mindset. One of the mantras that should be adopted today that would make a difference to the present state of affairs is to “consume less, and recycle more”. At the end of the day, consuming less in the way of unnecessary products, would be kinder on the pocket, and would ultimately ensure more quality time to be spent with family, friends, and in the community.

www.recycle.co.nz

New Zealand’s current footprint is equal to 4.31 gha per person. Europe’s is 4.72 and African countries at 1.45 gha per person.

Moving up the chain of life-forms capable of digesting solid matter from human and food wastes, Waterflow NZ Ltd

came to the conclusion early that vermiculture and biological processes offered by far the best means of treatment, for the solid waste, without using mechanical or electronic means. It has been shown, through extensive trialling worldwide, these vermiculture processes which reduce the solids by up to 95%, are unmatched by any other process. There are no mechanically moving parts in these processes and nature’s power is FREE! Ph 0800 628356 www.naturalflow.co.nz

Consult a certified asbestos abatement professional for the best advice. Some authorities allow homeowners to remove asbestos materials on their own. If you are considering DIY asbestos abatement, remember the following precautions:  Seal off the work area with plastic sheets and turn off the air conditioning  Wear a respirator with a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter

Exposure to asbestos causes cancers and other diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestosis.

How to Identify Asbestos Products Microscopic asbestos fibres cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Unless it is clearly marked as asbestos, the only way to detect asbestos in an unmarked material is to send a sample to a lab for testing or hire an accredited asbestos inspector.

Tips for Safely Handling Asbestos Some situations require the removal of asbestos-containing materials. But it may be safer to leave the materials undisturbed or encapsulate them with a sealant.

 Wear disposable coveralls and gloves during asbestos abatement  Use a pump sprayer to keep asbestos materials wet and suppress dust at all times  Clean the work area with wet wipes or a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (High efficiency particle arrest) filter  Dispose of asbestos waste in clearly labelled bags at a landfill that can accept asbestos

person who has gone, but for the people left behind. This is a fundamental thing to understand. Experience shows that funeral rites help to give meaning to the loss, to tighten the bonds in one’s circle, and to facilitate the process of mourning in various ways.

Certain rites such as the viewing, the service (whether religious or not) and the post-service reception allow the bereaved to feel the support and friendship of their relatives and friends. They are ways to share memories, express emotions and make a good start on the mourning process.

One major element to consider when you are aiming to get your business noticed online is cost. Digital ads can be expensive particularly if you want them placed on highly visible prime locations. Luckily, by being strategic about managing the fundamental elements of a company’s digital presence, your business can become visible online without the business having to resort to the high-cost expenses. Top Tip: Social Media no longer has the cut through that it once did. 1. Create Your Own Website You’d expect us to have this top of our list, but a website controlled by you, allows you to convey your message free from distractions to your customers. You are able to play by your rules not a platforms like Facebook. There are many ways to get online. If a bespoke site is not within your budget now, digicowebsites.com site subscription plans will let you have a fully functioning professional website, complete with a content management system, in weeks not months. Our designs are customised for the industries you work in. They are optimised for search and come with: Annual Domain Fee Included Refreshed Website every 3 years Professional Email Address Self Manage your website

Ecommerce Options Product and Listing Functionality Submitted to Google Secure Hosting (SSL)

2. Social Media Marketing A large number of companies engage with their customers and potential customers on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The technique here is to diversify the type of content shared on the accounts. It’s a no-no to keep on posting positive features of your products or the unique selling proposition of your service. Include links to interesting stories that are related to your niche or industry or perhaps a fun anecdote about your work, office environment, or a company event. Engage don’t Sell. 3. Don’t Purchase Links Links are important when it comes to SEO. It is a great driver of site traffic. Buying links from those who engage in black-hat SEO strategies may sound tempting, but you have to keep in mind that Google considers every link to your site as a vote of confidence that will help to boost the site’s search engine ranking.

digicowebsites.com When those links are found to be bogus, the site can be penalised. You wont just loose the value these gave you but also be penalised. Consider it like cheating on a test. What must be done is to build relationships with authority and reputable sites. Poor quality links for sites with limited reputations will have a negative rather than positive impact. 4. Don’t Forget to Use Instagram Whilst we have already mentioned Social Media, Instagram currently deserved its only mention. Instagram has over 300 million users and they spend an average of 21 minutes on the app each day. Instagram is not only intended for businesses like bakeries, flower shops, gift shops, and the likes. Instagram can enable emotional connections with current and potential customers regardless of the business. It also makes a great tool for recruitment since it lets you present the company’s culture. 5. Domain Name: Focus on finding a domain name that matches your brand Keywords in a top-level domain like .com or .org do not render any advantage or disadvantage to search results. It is pointless to spend excessive money on an exact-match domain through a reseller. However your brand and your domain should be unified. This will help customers remember your business and find you if searching online. 6. Create a Google My Business Account Take advantage of this free service that enables your business to appear in local search results. All you need is to have a (free) Google account. With this account, you can control your online presence, gather positive customer feedback and reviews, and have a deeper understanding of your site’s performance through Google My Business insights. 7. Track the site through Google Analytics Google Analytics is another must-have free tool for your business site. This can provide insights about the number of users who visit your website, how effective your current site content is, and if the varied channels are working well for your business or not. Summary These are only seven of many strategies available to promoting a small business. The trick for guaranteed success is to put eggs in different baskets, which means you have to diversify. These are great techniques which you can do immediately without much (or any) cost. Digicowebsites.com proudly partners with micro and small businesses on their online journey. We provide guidance and support through blogs, guides, and resources to help small businesses grow.

Why should I go for Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions. Microdermabrasion is an in-office procedure that usually takes about an hour. It helps to stimulate your skin’s collagen production and natural rejuvenation process by gently removing dead surface cells. Using diamond-tipped microdermabrasion and vacuum suction technology, combined with a combination of powerful topical cosmetic products. This procedure is typically performed by a licensedskincare professional.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal (Hyaluronic Acid) Fillers have been used throughout the world for more than 40 years; however, we still find that a lot of clients are unaware of exactly what this is and how it works. Here are five of our most frequently asked questions:

What are Dermal (Hyaluronic Acid) Fillers?

Hyaluronic Acid is a complex carbohydrate molecule produced naturally by our

body and reabsorbed in a short regular cycle. Its job is to attract fluid and provide hydration to the surrounding tissue. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid in a concentrated form, designed to integrate into your own tissue and hydrate and plump the area. They last between 6 – 24 months, depending on the type and amount injected, as well as the individual person.

Dermal (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers are not permanent and can be dissolved if necessary.

What does it do?

Dermal fillers work by attracting fluid and hydrating and plumping tissue. They help to address volume loss in areas of our face caused by the process of ‘growing up’. As we age, changes to facial fat pads and loss of bone density may be seen as hollowing or shadows. Additionally, our skin loses elasticity and cell turnover slows down, resulting in the development of lines and wrinkles. Such changes can make the individual feel that they look tired and sad, or even ‘saggy’ with areas such as the jawline looking soft and poorly defined. We use a variety of types of Hyaluronic Acid filler depending on the result required, to soften fine lines and wrinkles and to volumize and support areas of fat and bone loss. The result is a fresh and rejuvenated look that matches the inner you! Dermal (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers may also be used where no bone or fat loss is present purely to enhance and glamorise features such as cheeks and lips.

Does it hurt?

Our Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers contain a local anaesthetic, so any discomfort is minimised. Our techniques are designed to maximise your comfort; those receiving dermal filler treatments will often describe the feeling as a mild stinging sensation – or ‘weird but not painful’.

Will I look ‘frozen’ or ‘unnatural’?

Achieving a natural look is absolutely achievable; the key is taking a holistic view of the face. Best results may be achieved by gradual treatments, making subtle improvements each time. This approach results in a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance, rather than looking like you've 'had work done'. It is certainly possible to look unnatural if too much product is used or is placed incorrectly. This is why it is so important to do your research and choose your treatment provider wisely. “Take it one day at a time, and I’ll be here with you through them all.”

3 . “ W H AT H AV E YO U G OT TO B E D E PR E S S E D A BO U T ? ” Depression isn’t always caused by a traumatic or sad event. Sometimes, it just happens. That doesn’t make it any less serious.

1 1 . “ L I F E G O E S O N .” Yeah, life does go on, but for someone dealing with depression, it can feel as if they are stuck with no way out. They probably have trouble imagining getting through a day, let alone the entire week.

What you could say instead: “I didn’t realise you were strug gling. I’m here now if you need to talk.”

What you could say instead: “You have so much to live for, and I will be with you to help you rediscover those things.”

4 . “ YO U N E E D TO G O TO T H E GYM A N D G E T SO M E E XE RC I S E .” Although exercise can help combat bad days, when someone is strug gling with depression it may be too difficult to even get out of bed some days.

1 2 . “ YO U ’ R E B E I N G S E L F I S H .” Chances are, a person strug gling with depression is probably already being incredibly hard on themselves. They don’t need you to cut them down, as well. And remember, depression is not a choice. They are not choosing to do this.

What you could say instead:

5 . “ OT H E R PE O PL E H AV E I T M U C H WO R S E T H A N YO U D O.”

“I really miss you. What can I do to help?”

Someone else having problems does not make your problems disappear.

1 3 . “ YO U J U ST N E E D TO G E T O U T O F T H E H O U S E ! ”

What you could say instead:

Again, for someone strug gling with depression, leaving the house could seem next to impossible. And even if they do, leaving the house isn’t a fix for depression.

“I’m sorry that you’re hurting. How can I help you?”

6 . “ YO U J U ST H AV E TO D E A L WIT H IT.”

What you could say instead:

Someone who strug gles with depression IS dealing with it… every single day… as best they can. Saying this undermines them and could make them feel as if they aren’t good enough.

“I don’t like the thought of you dealing with this alone. Maybe I can come over or we can go somewhere together.”

What you could say instead: “You don’t have to deal with this alone. I am here for you.”

7. “ L I F E I S N ’ T FAI R .”

What you could say instead:

This is, once again, downplaying this person’s feelings. No, life may not be fair, but that won’t make them feel any better about their situation.

“You seem to be having a difficult time and I just want you to know that I’m here for you.”

What you could say instead: “I’m sorry this is happening to you, but we can and WILL get you through this.

1 5 . “ YO U ’ R E ST RO N G , YO U ’ L L B E F I N E .” Depression will make anyone feel weak and helpless.

8 . “ B RO, YO U ’ R E B R I N G I N G E V E RYO N E D OW N .”

What you could say instead:

Depression is not a choice. A person strug gling with depression may feel helpless. They are strug gling to help themselves; the last thing they need is the extra worry and pain of trying to help you.

“I believe in you, and I know you can get through this. I will be here every step of the way.”

What you could say instead: “I hate seeing you so down. What can I do to help?”

Vaccination is our best protection against COVID-19 The higher our vaccination rates, the fewer restrictions we’ll need to keep the virus under control Make summer unstoppable - Vaccinate against COVID-19

Go to Northlanddhb.org.nz for more information A number of recent surveys have shown health to be second only to housing in importance to New Zealanders. Even though coronavirus is top of mind, core health conditions have continued and, in some cases, e.g. Cot death they have escalated. Here are 3 health areas that worry New Zealanders: 1. Waiting Times. Currently 30,000 people have waited more than 4 months to see a specialist or to receive treatment. It is vitally important that waiting times be a target and not an indicator. 2. PHARMAC. New Zealanders want access to a wider range of medicines more quickly. To do this we will need to benchmark

ourselves to Australia and the UK, and to allocate more health funding to PHARMAC. 3. Cancer. Cancer is one of the few conditions where very short periods of time can dramatically change options and outlook. New Zealanders want the highest quality cancer treatment possible including timely access to surgery, accessible radiotherapy, and a wide range of cancer medicines. National commits to New Zealanders that we will return health targets and hold ourselves

accountable to those targets. An indicator is a direction of travel. A target is accountability for the direction of travel. I choose the later. Dr Shane Reti QSM. RETIREMENT Alzheimers Northland has doubled in size in the past 10 years since general manager Kevin Salmon took the helm. Staff numbers have grown from 12 to 22 and the organisation now helps more than 550 clients compared with 350 a decade ago, Kevin says. It’s a growth that he is proud to have been part of, with the vision and expertise of the board that helps keep the organisation running smoothly. Kevin says the advantage for Alzheimers Northland is its autonomy. That means all money that we raise or that is donated to us remains in Northland we can decide how best to use it to the benefit of our clients.’’ The busy Tikipunga centre offers day programmes Monday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm, as well as twice a week in Waipu and once a week in Paihia. “The day programme is just as important for the carer as it is for the client, who gets a great day out in a fun environment. The carer gets the respite time which they can use however they want.
