Tsunami Siren Testing Northland Tsunami sirens are tested on the Sunday at the beginning and end of Daylight savings. Tsunami sirens mean ‘Seek Further Information’ about the situation so you can make an informed decision on how to respond. In some cases there may not be time to sound sirens, so learn about the natural warning signs of a tsunami, including:
the ground shaking for longer than a minute loud roaring sound like a jet engine the ocean going in and out unusually fast. If you notice any of the natural warning signs, move inland or to higher ground immediately.

MAKE YOUR HOME FIRE SAFE Here’s a quick and easy checklist you can use to spot any risks or hazards that might cause a fire.
SMOKE ALARMS Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommends long-life photoelectric smoke alarms.
For optimum smoke detection, long-life photoelectric smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, living area and hallway in the house. Test the batteries every month. Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust and debris can stop alarms from working properly, so vacuum over and around your smoke alarms regularly.
KITCHEN & LAUNDRY Clean the clothes dryer lint filter after every use Keep the stovetop clean and free of any spilled fats or burnt foods.
LEADS AND CORDS Do not overload multi-boards. At most, plug in one appliance per wall or multi-board socket. Never plug an adaptor or multi-board into another adaptor or multi-board.
ESCAPE PLANS Work out two escape routes for every room and make sure everyone in your household is familiar with your escape plan. Pick a safe meeting place outside the home (often the letterbox) and practise your escape plan regularly.
APPLIANCES Turn off appliances when not in use. If practical, unplug them at the wall as well.
ELECTRIC BLANKETS Make sure your electric blanket lies flat on the bed and the controls or cords are not twisted or caught. Twisted cords are a common cause of electric blanket fires. Never sleep with an electric blanket turned on.

Like many other people, we were completely unaware of the extensive value the Northland Rescue Helicopter service provides to our emergency services system. Grant from the Northland Rescue Helicopter came to see AirConnect a little while ago with regards to getting a compressor and associated equipment sorted. This was to assist with the modifying of two new helicopters. Listening to Grant, and the work they do on a daily basis, we realised that we had to support this awesome service. AirConnect is a fresh, new Northland owned and operated company and we are very passionate about supporting local industries and services. We set them up with a brand new Compair 10hp rotary screw compressor. Complete with receiver, dryer and all the accessories
required to assist them with their project. During our meeting, we casually made the comment “You never know, we might need this service one day.” As it unfortunately turned out, it wasn’t just a remark. Raymond’s daughter had been involved in an accident and was in a critical condition. She was flown to Auckland for immediate intensive care. Due to their fast acting, she was able to make an excellent recovery. Our office manager Maera is also a walking testament to the great work they do. “I never dreamt I would need the Rescue Helicopter. A couple of months ago, I had pain in my chest that was intense. After medical attention, it was recommended I urgently get sent to Auckland hospital as the procedure I needed could not be performed at the Whangarei Hospital. The Northland Rescue Helicopter got me to Auckland very quickly and that saved my life. I live in Kensington and hear the

helicopters come and go day and night. After being transported in one, I now think about the person laying in the back on the stretcher. Hoping to get to the nearest medical centre, relying on the extraordinary crew and capabilities of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. The helicopter service is only partially funded by crown health agencies, leaving the Trust to find sponsors and donors from the community to fund approximately 25% ($1.25 million) of its operating costs.

NORTHLAND REGIONAL LANDFILL PUWERA The northland regional Landdll (Puwera) is one of New Zealand's newest landdll located south of the Portland turn off, 8.5km south of Whangarei. The site is on 84 hectares of farm land with the landdll footprint being well buffered by surrounding land. The site has sufficient volume to provide refuse disposal to the northland region for the next 35 years. The landdl was opened in 2010 providing residual waste disposal services in the greater Northland region as a 50% shareholding in a Joint Venture Landdl with Whangarei District Council and Northland Waste Ltd.
LANDFILL GAS MANAGEMENT As the rubbish in the landdll degrades over time, it releases methane gas knownas LFG. Gas is extracted via a network of gas wells. Gas concentrations will peak approximately twenty years after initial refuse deposition. A reticulated gas collection and management system will be installed progressively to monitor and control the methane gas created in the landdll cells.Gas will initially be removed and disposed of through a air. Fairing entails burning excess gas in a controlled manner, thus reducing the risk from uncontrolled combustion. However, once sufficient volumes are generated, Northland waste plans to use the gas to produce electricity. An electrical generation facility constructed on site would produce power for the operations at the landdll as well as supplying the national grid.

The future of farming
Younger generations are growing up surrounded by technology and the advancement of these technologies is ferocious. Along with being frightening and daunting to most of us, it is also exciting, challenging and now more than ever necessary. The biggest hurdle will not be the appetite for young farmers and supporting industries to do the job, it will be capital and viability. As the world population continues to increase, so does the demand for food. The issue is that 80% of available land is already being cultivated and due to water shortage, crop diseases, labour shortage and climate change, productivity is falling worldwide. The only way forward is more technology -- more precision farming and more precision planning.
Robotics Right now in this country you can install a fully automated rotary cowshed capable of milking 800 cows per day. While the robotic arms milk your cows they also gather screeds of data to help with accurate and informed planning. The future is here and being adopted already. Robotics and automation advancements are huge worldwide. Fully automated and driverless fleets of tractors are in use, and robots armed with highly advanced lasers are able to select and pick fruit, spray crops precisely and measure nutrients and yields. It would be great to see more innovation and/or adaptation of these advancements used in New Zealand. Look at robotics and agriculture on YouTube and you will be shocked and inspired. What an exciting opportunity for our aspiring robotic engineers.
Effluent and nutrients What if the problem of nutrient loss was turned into an opportunity? At least in part this is being done in various countries and is now being developed and attempted in NZ. Digesters are being used in the US and Europe on dairy farms, among other industries and, connected to an effluent system they can provide fertilisers and power. In NZ they sit alongside a newer technology -- a bio-reactor growing algae. This is potentially capable of producing stock feed, fuel and pharmaceuticals, and it finishes the process by releasing clean water. Using this could quickly turn around a dairy farm’s environmental impact while producing useable resources for a farm.
Crops Let’s say a farm is growing 15t DM/ha/year now; how can this get to 30t DM/ha/year by 2050? New grasses are impressive, but I doubt grass alone will get us there; I suggest part of the solution is to be found in cropping. Already many farms have come a long way and farmers, consultants and scientists are figuring out how to adapt these crops and practices for more profitable farming. It’s not as straightforward or as easy as traditional grass
farming but many farmers already understand the benefits of cropping and a lot of work is underway to produce more from the land for a profitable outcome. The newly unified research farms under Dairy Trust Taranaki are researching a control system alongside a research system in a commercial environment. Lincoln’s research on beet is bringing an opportunity to lift DM production on farms significantly, as maize has done and continues to do. Along with advancements in other crops we have a pool of highly talented and motivated young agronomists supporting these new crops. The more this is done the better we’ll get at doing it; as long as it is based on profit the future of cropping is bright. Feed budgeting and farm modelling Many feed budgeting tools are available now and are widely used; if regularly referred to and updated these are a powerful tool on a farm. A feed budget is critical to working out profitability on farm and although it is only a budget it gives guidance and a reference point for farmers to work from. There are also new programs brilliantly written to model farms and compare changes in systems and payout. These programs are accurate enough to base big decisions on. FarmWise has this tool developed over many years called Optimiser, and with accurate information entered into it this creates a clear view of what is profitable or at least what it would take to be profitable. For example, if you wanted to know how going OAD early in a low-payout season would compare with your current system, instead of guessing you can model it to see if it will actually work. All the variables – labour, power, feed cost and cow condition – are taken into account to give clear direction. Every farm is different and these tools can help you plan to get what you want from your farm while helping relieve the stress of the unknown.

Important information about trees and powerlines Trees too close to powerlines can be a danger to the public and property. Trees and other types of vegetation like bamboo and shrubs should be regularly maintained, so they do not grow into powerlines. If trees are not maintained this can cause problems in high winds and storms –
it can lead to power cuts and is a potential fire risk. A person who touches a tree that’s in contact with a powerline can get an electric shock.
Power outages due to trees in powerlines cause major inconvenience to people, businesses and the community, and in some cases can also be life threatening for those who rely on electricity.
Your role in keeping trees clear of powerlines There’s a legal requirement under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 to keep your trees clear of our powerlines, to make sure they don’t affect our electricity supply or anyone’s safety. It’s your responsibility to keep trees you own trimmed and away from our powerlines.
We regularly carry out tree surveys and inspect our powerlines, and we’ll do our best to let you know if your tree is getting too close to the lines. But we also need you to keep an eye out too. If we find one of your trees is growing too close to our powerlines, we will discuss this with you or send you a notice advising what work needs to be done.
Please note, this does not include the service line from our network powerlines to your property. You will need to arrange your own arborist to carry out this work, however we can assist with arranging a free disconnection while the tree maintenance is underway.
The Growth Limit Zone The Growth Limit Zone is the legal minimum space surrounding any powerlines on our network, that must be kept clear of trees (this doesn’t include the service line to your property.) If we become aware that your tree is growing into the Growth Limit Zone, we will advise you and issue a ‘Cut or Trim’ notice, with a date by which the work must be completed by. Cutting or trimming trees powerlines can be dangerous.

For safety reasons, trees in the Growth Limit Zone can only be maintained by us or an arborist who we have approved to work near our powerlines. We can provide you with a list of authorised contractors who can trim around our powerlines. In most cases, we will meet the reasonable costs of the first tree trimming. This public notice provides you with information as required by the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003.
