VOICING THE PAIN Campbell hosts its second annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week

Feb. 3 marks the beginning of the second annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week. During this week, the Campbell community learns

about sexual assault crimes and resources for victims of those crimes. Sexual crimes are an uncomfortable topic for some individuals, but the Sexual Assault Awareness Committee said they want to be

frank about the topic to allow victims to feel comfortable to come forward and seek help. Dr. Catherine Cowling, a criminal justice professor at Campbell, and a member of both the Sexual Assault Awareness Week Committee

and the Clothesline Project Committee, said, “It is important to know that college students are at a great risk of sexual assault.” According to the Rape Cri See SAAW page 5

Because of Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine, the university’s Health Center has undergone several changes and improved its services. Prior to the medical school

opening, a physician’s assistant (PA) was available to treat students at the CU Health Center on T. T. Lanier Street during normal business hours. But with the addition of the new Osteopathic School, has come also an additional staff of students and physicians to treat patients

around the clock. Physicians are on call for extended hours, so students have someone to contact outside of operating hours. According to Dr. Nicholas Pennings, who became Director of Campbell’s Health Center in August 2013, the beginning of the medical

school brought in highly skilled medical professionals who can provide students with excellent medical care. “Many of the physicians are professors of medicine, and are Board certified, and they are respected leaders in

After 100 days as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, our former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences says he is more comfortable and confident in his new role. “I began to understand that I am accustomed to the responsibilities and challenges that come with this office,” Hammond Hammond, appointed in September, said. All of the deans of Campbell report to Hammond. He is also responsible for the university’s accreditation, as well as playing a role in deciding prospective new programs here. In addition to his provost duties, he is also a professor of biology. “I remember so well hiring him to become an assistant professor of biology,” President of Campbell University Dr. Jerry Wallace said. “I saw him as a very fine man who would do well at Campbell.” Hammond’s role as professor is what he said allows him to close the gap between provost and students. “I haven’t given up that most direct contact which is that faculty role.
