Twinkle into the stars Students look to the stars for inspiration in new club

“Everybody has been waiting on this part of the stadium for five or six years, so the anticipation that it is finally here has everyone excited,” Coach Minter said. “No longer do I see it in a picture, but I see it in real life. So I think, the excitement is that Campbell football is here for real.”

Barker-Lane Stadium has been the home of Campbell’s football team since the program’s re-launch in 2008.

The stadium also played host for CU’s inaugural women’s lacrosse team in spring 2013.

This year, some may see some Camels looking up at the stars.

The Campbell University Astronomy Club begins its inaugural year with plans to become a large presence here in The Creek.

For senior biology major and Astronomy Club Ezell President Kaitlyn Blackburn, the club is meant to create a community with a common interest in the stars.

“It is a club that I want to being people together and for them not to be intimidated by the word “astronomy,” to see another side of it, a fun side, and to kind of embrace that, and do it as a group,” Blackburn said.

According to club faculty adviser and Campbell physics and astronomy professor Jason Ezell, Astronomy Club began after reaching a “critical density” of interest.

Over the years, I’ve had different students come up to me and ask me about an astronomy club,” Ezell said.

“This past year, we finally have enough people interested in it, and that’s where it took off.”

Community anticipates new additions to Baker-Lane Stadium

Campbell has been making numerous headlines with the opening of the new School of Osteopathic Medicine, but the athletics program has been creating its own ‘buzz’ around campus.

The 2013 football season marks a new era of Campbell Football.

Not only will the program see the impact of new head coach and former NFL player and Carolina Panther safety Mike Minter, but also the impact of the next stage of renovations to the BarkerLane Stadium.

Ways to stay fire safe living on campus

CU Republicans prepare for new year

As students embark on a new school year the Campbell University College Republicans feel eager for all the opportunities and events planned.

This year, the College Republicans plan to focus on more on-campus events including the annual College Republican and College Democrat Debate, potential guest speakers, and monthly meetings.

They will continue to stay active in the Harnett County community by working with the upcoming municipal elections in November.

The CU Republicans also said they look forward to their annual trip to Washington, D.C. to the Conservative Political Action Committee Convention (CPAC). At CPAC, individuals will hear from nationally syndicated conservative speakers and politicians.

The CU College Republcians also have statewide leadership. The Campbell University College Republican Chairman this year is Valerie Procopio, a junior political science major, will also serve as the North Carolina Federation of College Republicans Communications Director.

Senior Nate Pencook will also serve as the North Carolina Federation of College Republicans Chairman as well as the College Republican National Committee’s Southern Regional Secretary.

CAB hosts tailgate for home game On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., the Campus Activities Board will host an afternoon of ‘water fun’ and refreshments before the CU Football Team’s first home game against Virginia-Wise.

Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

Administration anticipates ribboncutting for CUSOM On Sept. 19, Campbell administration will hold the official grand opening of North Carolina’s first new medical school in 35 years, the 96,500-square-foot Leon Levine Hall of Medical Sciences.

Students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community are welcome to tour the new building as well as meet CUSOM faculty.

As students settle into classes this semester, students must be aware of fire safety rules and tips.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “most collegerelated fires are due to a general lack of knowledge about fire safety and prevention.”

The first step to preventing dorm fires is through awareness of what causes them and how to avoid those circumstances.

Firefighter/EMT Wesley Smith of Buies Creek Fire Department provided simple tips of ways to prevent dorm fires: 1. No candles. While dorm rooms may produce foul odors, lighting a candle is one of the easiest ways to start a fire in the dorm. There are several alternatives to candles to keep a fresh smelling dorm

such as Febreeze or Wall Flowers that have a lower fire risk.

2. Be aware of the dangers of hot plates in such a confined

space. Because of the amount of smoke they produce, they aren’t allowed in the dorms.

3. Know your microwave

safety. Keep an eye on the food put in the microwave. Do not microwave with aluminum foil. Smith suggests if a person is unsure whether they can microwave an item not to put it in the microwave. He also said individuals may call the fire department at 910.893.4327 with microwave item questions.

4. Avoid overloading outlets, overcrowding rooms, and smoking in or near the dorms because they are easy firestarters.

5. In case of a fire emergency be sure to remember: all dorm should have a fire exit plan in plain view and all should learn it. Smith urges to keep all exits clear. He advises window sills to remain clear as well.

Hopefully the only orange flames we see on campus are the students and staff burning with Campbell pride.

Five Questions With Peter Newby Senior Peter Newby begins his term as Student Government Association President with high hopes for Campbell’s student body. He values both his position and his responsibility to the university. He also hopes to establish a strong community among SGA. What do you hope to do most in your role as SGA President this year?

“I would like to lead SGA into a position of service and leadership on campus and throughout the community. SGA should be leading and serving the students by example.”

What new initiatives or resolutions are you planning to implement for the new year?

“I would like to see more involvement with clubs on campus this year. Clubs directly reflect what the students are passionate about. By working in conjunction with club leaders and students, we can grow the presence and influence of each of the clubs on campus. I also will be working to make sure that the organization is being run in the most efficient and effective way possible. First, as the head of the Student Government, it is important for me to know each member personally. Second, as a student who was elected to serve the University, it is necessary that I have a productive relationship with all of the leadership across campus. Finally, and most importantly, as someone who was elected to serve best interests of the student body, it is vital for me to have a strong relationship with the students. I want all students to know that I am here for them, and that I am their advocate.”

What are you most excited for during the upcoming year?

“I am most excited about seeing the great things that the members of Congress will collectively accomplish this semester.

We have a great group of students serving in SGA this year. I have a fantastic executive board to work with, our committee chairs are extremely qualified for their positions, and our class officers and representatives are excited about working for the students. By working together, we will have the ability to achieve so much more than we would on our own. That achievement is what I am most excited about seeing.”

Embarking on beginnings

With the many years the average person experiences in a lifetime, each goes through numerous transitions.

Whether taking the steps from child to teen to adulthood or high school to college, the “in-between” periods cause trouble most of the time.

Each step toward the final transformation can be a struggle.

Living without my parents for the first time during freshman year threw me for a loop.

Months leading up to my university life, I continuous talked about how excited I was to live on my own with my own rules, schedules, and whims. Chockfull of teenage angst, I couldn’t wait to get away from my parents since I was convinced they were the ones “cramping my style.”

Nevertheless, in the middle of fall semester of freshman year, I began to miss the comforts of home.

I’m sure everyone experi-

ences those feelings during the first steps of a transition. Humans respond uncomfortably to change. We like our lives to stay relatively the same each day since uniformity helps us avoid conflict.

However, we should never be afraid of conflict or the trials and tribulations, which are inevitable in the scheme of life.

Every time we make a mistake or are faced with a difficulty, we grow.

Often, the growth takes longer than we anticipated and the journey appears completely uphill without any give.

Once the journey stops being what we expected, we start to panic. Control is natural to human nature. Yet, how can we have control of something we’ve never experienced?

In May, I plan to graduate and end my undergraduate career. Every time I share I’m a senior in university, I’m confronted with the question of my future plans. Unfortunately, I don’t know yet. I often feel embarrassed when I share my uncertainty. Many

of my friends have their hearts set on graduate programs or a specific job in their field, but I’m still sloshing around in the wade pool of undecided college graduates.

The most frightening thing to humanity: the unknown.

Each step I take I’m hoping is toward my future career path(es). There is no way of knowing which road is the right one; yet, I’m ok with that.

I don’t need to know right now. Freshman year I didn’t need to know everything about college life al at one time. I learned over the years.

With each year, I continue to grow. With each step in the journey, I unearth more about myself, but also the world around me. Yet, I realize there is so much more that I don’t know, which is terrifying and exciting at the same time.

There is no way to anticipate what is to come.

However, the best strategy to the unknown is to face it head on. Hopefully, as I’m still splashing around, I’ll find a buoy.

Study Abroad Column

Finding a new fairy tale

Castles. Princesses. Houses made of candy. Lost children.

Ogres. Witches’ brew. Storybook material and real life overlap in “Fairy Tales in Germany and France,” the newest summer program of Campbell’s Office of Study Abroad.

Led by famed French language professor, Dr. David Steegar, and learned philosopher and German language professor, Dr. Brian Thomas, students will study the cultural context of fairy tales in Europe.

These professors plan to journey with alumni and students to the lands of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault. The itinerary includes Sleeping Beauty’s castle, Rapunzel’s tower, Little Red Riding Hood’s countryside, Germany’s Fairy Tale Road, and the home of Puss in Boots and Tom Thumb.

This program perfectly complements the “Fairy Tale Class,” a regular course of the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program.

Campbell students will also have three other faculty-led study abroad experiences to choose from in the summer of 2014. Students can earn three to six credits on these pro-

grams and can apply financial aid to cover the cost of tuition and program fees.

Dr. Jutta Street will lead students on the “Psychology and Culture” program through the Alpine splendor of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Students will explore the roots of psychology at such sites as the Freud Museum, the Piaget and Rousseau Institutes, and Viktor Frankl’s house. Lectures by world renowned psychologists at top universities, concerts, and lots of schnitzel fill the itinerary.

Dr. Taylor, a psychology professor who accompanied the 2012 program, says that the experience makes the abstractness of psychology in the classroom “more real and alive.”

In the “Hawaiian Natural History and Culture” program, Dr. Chris Havran will introduce students to the study of “Natural History” – the interaction of people and plants in Hawaii over time.

Surfing and hula lessons, climbing volcanoes, snorkeling over coral reefs, and replanting indigenous plants are parts of the packed and exciting itinerary. Students assist Dr. Havran with ongoing research, while also conducting self-designed research projects and practical field

exercises.

Dr. Carol Maidon will lead the “Education in Costa Rica” program to Alejuela Province in Costa Rica. Students live with a local “Tico” family and take Spanish lessons at ICLC, a local language school. Students will observe and volunteer in the local school system, explore the natural beauty of Costa Rica’s rainforests, and live like a local while earning Spanish and Education credit.

Students can learn more about all the study abroad opportunities at the Study Abroad Fair on September 9th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the Alumni Room of Marshbanks Cafeteria. Applications for the summer faculty-led programs are due by January 17th.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Though it may not be the mainstream thing to do during the best four years of your life, College Republicans play an important role in the campus community. Because of the liberal bias that is inherent in our education system, College Republicans fill the void by providing intellectual diversity on campuses across the state.

That’s why it’s important to be sure that College Republicans get adequate funding from Student Governments.

This week, the UNC College Republicans received a 75% funding cut from last year’s budget for seemingly no reason other than “across the board cuts.” Yet anarchist and feminist groups received significantly less cuts and substantially more funding. The anarchist UNControllables received $4,005 and feminist Siren Magazine received their full funding request of $5,157.

Keep in mind that UNC CRs are one of UNC’s largest student organizations, and especially larger than the two mentioned here.

Regardless of your position on the ideological scale, I hope you realize why it’s important for College Republicans to exist. Whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, an Unaffiliated, or an Apathetic, we all have friends on either side of the aisle, and we respect their opinion as it brings balance to our political dialogue which as of late is regrettably rather polarizing.

I encourage every campus community to support intellectual diversity on their campuses. That includes open dialogues amongst different ideological groups as well as fair funding practices in SGA. If you’re fed up with the gridlock plaguing our government, let’s change that. It starts now by opening our minds to other views rather than shutting them down by pulling funding.

With the start of a new school year, many students begin the search for a new club or group to join.

While Campbell University offers various options, several students have recently joined together to form an organization not affiliated with the school--The Young Republicans of Harnett County, an organization available to both Campbell students and the Harnett County community.

The club’s creation stemmed from the students’ feelings that the young people of Harnett County were not as involved in the Republican Party as they could be.

“Campbell has the College Republicans and the county has the Harnett GOP, but nothing for young people ages 18-39,” said organization chairman and senior history/ pre-law major Gabe Snyder.

Since its inception earlier this year, the Young Republicans have gained twenty members along Snyder with eight Campbell students in leadership positions.

Although a new group, the Young Republicans have already gained support from several key Republican leaders, including State Senator Ronald Rabin, Congresswoman Renee Ellmers, and Representatives Mike Stone and David Lewis.

Snyder strongly believes in the importance of the young population’s voice.

“In these days it is vitally important for young people to be involved and express themselves through political involvement,” Snyder said.

“It is not the older people that will feel the effects of the legislation, but the younger generation. We should have a greater say regarding what goes on in Washington and Raleigh.”

In addition to promoting the Republican Party, the club has several fun events planned such as a shooting range day, cigar nights, happy hours at Lillington’s County Seat, and a trip to Washington DC to tour the capital and attend a Conservative Conference with speakers such as Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

Students can learn more about the Young Republicans of Harnett County at the club’s next meeting on Sept. 5 at 203 Kivett Road in Lillington.

“It was fun and exciting to teach the students,” said Castillo Alfaro.

Castillo Alfaro suggests to students that have never danced the salsa before to not be shy and to come out and dance.

She said she was very proud of the students for trying the new dance.

For some players, like freshman froward, Tunji Osifejo, it is only the beginning of a long career here in the Creek.

Osifejo made his first appearance in a home field appearance during the game against the Wolfpack Friday night.

Despite the loss, Osifejo still had a positive, and memorable experience.

“It honestly felt great. Coming and almost scoring a goal was one of the greatest feelings of my life. The atmosphere was unbearable and I really felt welcomed,” Osifejo said.

The Camels will host VMI at home on Tuesday Sept 2, which is the first conference game of the season.

Another change to the stadium atmosphere was to Ed Gore Field: the CU logo in the center of the field was flipped so that it faces the newly built home grandstand.

This is the second big addition to Campbell’s home field, as stadium lights were added

to Barker-Lane Stadium during the summer of 2012, to allow practices and games to be held at night.

“I think everybody wants to see the new stadium and the new football team,” said Coach Minter. “So there’s a lot of new stuff going on right now and come the first home game, man is that stadium going to look good under the lights with a packed crowd on September seventh.”

New season ahead for Lady Camels

The Fighting Camels Women’s Soccer team looks forward to another season under the direction of Head Coach Todd Clark.

Last year, the team competed in the Big South conference, but fell to Radford in the Big South Tournament Quarterfinal.

Clark and the team hope to make a larger impact in this year’s conference championship.

“As always the team is excited around this time of year and believes this could be the year,” Clark said.

The women’s soccer team has experience some early season injuries including many experienced and top players on the team.

“This is never an excuse for poor play, and the exhibition games are still the same 11 versus 11 players on a field,” the coach said.

am very confident we will have a successful year. This year’s team has loads of talent; we just need to put all twenty-seven pieces to the puzzle in the right spots. I believe that this is

the team, and now is the time.”

Schneider said she looks forward to keeping the Camel offense going and helping the underclassmen learn how to be leaders.

“The team is feeling good about the season, we have some obstacles early on but we are hardworking team; and are working hard to overcome those,” junior forward Ashley Clark said. “We have a lot of new experience so we just have to find the balance. The older players are stepping it up; injuries are just something we need to move forward from and other players have to step it up.”

Many players like Schneider and Clark are determined that the team will use the exhibition games as a learning experience.

Under the direction of players like junior midfielder Alexis Prada and Schneider, the team said they hope to overcome any difficult times.

Prada said, “Our team has been working extremely hard and we have a great group of returners with a goal of winning the Big South Championship.”
