An extraordinary team of local heroes have distinguished themselves by completing a challenge few thought that they were up to, and fewer still among them would have believed possible, even just a few short months ago, when they arrived to work the summer season with TUI UK’s top British travel brands Thomson and First Choice Holidays. When Gran Canaria resort manager for the group, Paul Gilliam, first suggested that he, and perhaps some members of his team, might like to contribute half of the proceeds from

a TUI charity raffle to our annual ACCM Breast Cancer Awareness drive, even his most positive visions could not have fortold the massive commitment and determination that would be shown by his entire resort team, based on the south of the island. Feeling, however, that he should lead by example, Paul agreed to join a small group of adventurers planning to walk coast to coast, across the summit of Gran Canaria, from Maspalomas to the capital, Las Palmas, in solidarity with those suffering from such serious illness.

Paul, whose mother had battled with Lukemia, worked to prepare himself mentally and physically for the arduous task ahead, which was to take place over four days of rough terrain mountain hiking, in the knowledge that not everyone has a choice about which mountains they must climb. His partner, Sharon, was concerned knowing that he had not done anything like this before, but that once he set his mind to it, he wouldn’t stop until it was either done or he fell down trying.

It turned out that his resolve was contagious. His co-workers decided that they could do more than simply sell tickets in a raffle...

Her Majesty´s Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley Simon Manley CMG, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1990, succeeds Giles Paxman as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and non-resident Ambassador to Andorra On his arrival, Simon Manley, the new Ambassador, said: “I am delighted to be here in Spain and look forward to strengthening our broad and deep bilateral relationship. Spain is a key ally within the European Union and NATO and is one of our most important trading partners. “Creating sustainable growth is a priority for both the UK and Spain. I’m delighted that some 400 Spanish companies are registered in the UK and investors such as Santander, Telefónica, Iberdrola and Ferrovial have made Spain our sixth largest inward investor, totalling 40 billion pounds of Foreign Direct Investment stock at the end of 2011**. “Meanwhile, British companies exported 8.27 billion pounds (9.7 billion euros) of goods and service to Spain, making it the UK’s eighth largest export market.” Mr Manley said he was looking forward to meeting and working with companies in both Spain and the UK, whether established investors or new entrants keen to secure a foothold in their respective markets. “I am excited by the prospects for cooperation and growth in sectors like energy, car manufacturing and life sciences that are so important for future growth. “Liberalising trade both within the European Union and beyond it is a vital enabler to create jobs and growth. Mr Manley read Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford and International Relations at Yale University Graduate School. He is married to Maria Isabel Fernandez Utges Manley, an intellectual property, competition and regulatory lawyer. They have three daughters aged 13, 12 and 5.

HOW CAN YOU HELP: We need volunteers to raise funds, gather food items, deliver donations to us, collect items such as bread from bakeries at the end of the day and freeze it to be distributed frozen on Tuesdays, to inform us of any available food that we could distribute, to help the needy recover their independence by means of worthwhile occupation, if you are looking for a cleaningwoman, a babysitter, a caretaker for the elderly, even part time or now and again, this can help someone to make some money that will help them feel productive and reduce their debts. We have a programme called “Adopt a Family” – individuals may commit to covering certain basic expenses for a family (any one or a specific one) such as their utilities, etc., for any amount you choose, or help by covering the expenses for schoolbooks for children, outfits for school, dental expenses, etc. A group of retired ladies (the Hattedamene) are sponsoring baby and children’s food for the over 100 children between newborn and age 12, when there are available funds we purchase nappies for children under age 3. We have a bank account: Any amount is welcome! if you wish to make a donation earmarked for a special need (dental costs for a child, nappies, rent, eggs, potatoes, baby food, a specific family, transportation, etc.), please state it when making your deposit or transfer. Research has beaten many diseases in recent history, and in time, we believe that research will beat prostate and testicular cancer. But we need to accelerate this reality and that’s why at Movember, we are changing the culture of science by breaking down barriers, by funding innovative research that builds powerful, collaborative, global teams. It is through this pioneering new model that we will achieve our goal of improved clinical tests and treatments for men with prostate and testicular cancer.

MOVEMBER’S GLOBAL ACTION PLAN

As a result of working with prostate and testicular cancer partners from around the world, Movember identified an opportunity to accelerate research outcomes by providing researchers across the world the opportunity to work together on specific projects.

At a global level the Movember Foundation funds the Global Action Plan (GAP), an international research collaboration initiative that is accelerating outcomes by providing researchers from around the world the opportunity to work together on

By bringing together international researchers, GAP facilitates a new and unprecedented level of global research collaboration, not previously seen within the cancer community. Over time, researchers coming together to share details of what worked

Today there are five GAP projects underway, which have brought together more than 250 of the world’s top prostate and testicular cancer researchers, all of them committed to working together on research and sharing their knowledge in the area.

HOW GAP WORKS An independent GLOBAL SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE (GSC) identifies one priority project for GAP each year – this is the piece of research that would best benefit from global collaboration. The GSC is comprised of internationally renowned prostate cancer experts from around the world, and chaired by Dr. Colleen Nelson. Once the priority area is endorsed by Movember’s BOARD, the best prostate or testicular cancer researchers in the world are brought together and funded to collaborate and answer a pre-determined issue or question. Once the researchers are recruited, they collaborate through a number of platforms, including regular conference calls, annual face-to-face meetings and participation on Movember’s online collaboration platform called Promoveo. Promoveo is a Latin phrase which means to push forward, move ahead, advance and that is exactly the aim of the online platform which Movember has custom built for the prostate and testicular cancer research community. AWARENESS & EDUCATION

On average men live five to six years less than women and more than five men die prematurely each hour from potentially preventable illnesses. These are hard hitting facts, especially when you consider there’s no biological disadvantage putting men at greater risk and, according to research, up to half of male cancer cases could be prevented by healthier diet and lifestyle choices. The reasons for the current state of men’s health are numerous and complex but undoubtedly a big issue is the way men think about their health. Preventative health is something many men just don’t consider. It’s this issue that Movember’s Awareness & Education programme is working hard to change. Awareness and education alters behaviour and mind-sets. It gradually breaks down barriers, removes stigmas and brings about real change. Movember wants men to take responsibility for their health, prevent illness by leading a healthy lifestyle and understand the symptoms and signs in both themselves and others so they can appreciate when and how to seek help if needed. MOVEMBER’S AWARENESS & EDUCATION PROGRAMME The appearance of a moustache on a usually clean shaven man prompts questions and, throughout Movember, men are constantly asked, “why the moustache?”. Justification and an explanation follow, and the result is a highly effective and authentic word-of-mouth campaign for men’s health. In this way, each member of the Movember community is helping to bring about change through their moustache and the conversations it generates. What has happened so far?

• 67 % of Movember participants recommended others to go see a doctor • 20 % of Movember participants went to see their doctor • 70 % talked about men’s health issues • 43 % became more aware and educated about the health risks they face The research shows that participation in Movember does encourage men to proactively engage in the management of their health. However, findings also highlighted that some men had ignored an issue rather than taking action, seeking support or going to a doctor. This is proof that there is still work to be done and Movember has a responsibility to keep raising awareness, thereby motivating and engaging men around the world to change the face of men’s health. Movember’s Awareness & Education programme is delivered through a number of different mechanics, including our ambassador programme, media relations, events, educational materials, website and campaign creative. La Luna in Arguineguín is one of those places that you can easily miss, but once you know it is there, you are drawn back time and time again. If you want no frills, affordable food all throughout the day this is the place to go in Arguineguín. Situated on a busy walkway on the main road through town, there are always people in La Luna, and on occasion there is simply no where to sit. The fact that workers, taxi drivers, local police, Canarians, Scandinavians and Brits all eat there show it must have some appeal. The coffee is hot and strong, the service fast and the food edible, which are all good points. You need to enter La Luna with an open mind, as there is nothing special about it, however, it is a relaxed place to meet friends for a coffee, or grab a quick bite to eat. The tapa on display is always the same, and the menu does not jump out and grab your attention, but the food is basic and delivered speedily. Whether you want to try the local tapa or a toasted sandwich, everything is cooked fresh and is an excellent price. Two people can easily eat lunch with drinks for under 10€.

Gran Canaria as an event destination

Gran Canaria enjoys great infrastructure, excellent airport, hotels, resturants, transportation. There are flexible flights to and from most locations in Europe. Prices are fairly low, much lower than comparable prices in London or Paris. Several excellent conference centers have been built. All this makes Gran Canaria a great location for all kinds of events. Especially any event that has participants from multiple locations in Europe. Being a sunshine location Gran Canaria also offers you the opportunity to bring your spouse or family, place them in the hotel while you go off to attend the event. It is the perfect combination, especially in the wintertime. We believe Gran Canaria can be developed into an event destination similar to what Las Vegas has become in the USA. A natural spot to convene.

What needs to be done; Facilitate for less formal events. Our beloved hosts here in Spain are rather conservative, rather formal, when they gather they like to dress up in their best clothes to look their best. This is reflected in the conference venues that have been built, huge glass structures where people attend indoors in aircondition, fully dressed suit and tie. Even the lunch area of the conference centers are indoors, sometimes even without windows. While this fits into the formal conference type we all know, this is not the future. The future is less formal events, taken “down”, dress down, “smart casual”. People who come to Gran Canaria from Northern Europe during winter want to enjoy the weather. Our suggestion is this: do the presentations outdoors, have lunch in the sun. Long pauses outside between lectures. Dress smart casual. Allow new innovative concepts, meetings, conferences to be launched, nurture things starting small, and help them grow. Thoughts & feelings about my life in the Canary Islands Barrie Mahoney I have recently been putting the finishing touches to my latest book for expats. Whilst reading it through for one last time before it is sent to the publishers, I realised that it was not written in quite the same buoyant tones as my earlier publications. It was written during a year of relative turmoil in the Canary Islands and Spain, as well as across the world. Increased concerns about unemployment levels of around one third of the working population in the islands for much of the year, the increasing impact of the banking crisis upon ordinary people, bankruptcies and home repossessions have all led to increasing uncertainty for both the local and expat population of the islands and much of Europe. The political situation has not been good either, with political uncertainties, scandals and ‘in-fighting’ within the ruling Partido Popular (Conservative) party, affecting the popularity and possible tenure of the Spanish Prime Minister. Even the once highly popular Spanish Royal family has come in for considerable criticism for unwise financial dealings from the usually acquiescent and respectful Spanish media. As I write this, the old chestnut surrounding the status of Gibraltar has raised its ugly head once again. Most observers agree that this is a regular ploy by both the Spanish and UK Governments during periods of internal discontent and unrest to focus the attention of the media and general population upon issues other than the economy, unemployment and unpopularity of the government. However, such issues are unsettling for both businesses and expats alike, and can cause needless concern and anxiety for all. Building sites that were once identified as areas for smart new development for expat homes, shopping centres and offices remain silent, sale boards of both completed, as well as incomplete, properties abound. Many Spanish people have left the country for work elsewhere in Europe and beyond. In most towns and cities, there is an abundance of empty shops, bars, offices and homes, and the once bustling Costas are no longer the bustling areas that they once were. Looking back, it should not have come as such a surprise. Spain's economy, as well as that in many other countries, grew far too quickly to sustain, and the people behind the system grew both greedy and complacent. The bubble had to burst eventually, together with its disastrous consequences. The unpopular truth for political and economic commentators is that, despite support from the European Union, Spain is nowhere near a lost

cause. In the last two years, Spanish manufacturers that traditionally focused upon home consumption have turned their attention to the global market. As a result, exports have reached a record high. Even the most jingoistic of commentators are beginning to realise that Spain has the capacity, ability and wherewithal to rectify its economic problems, and is not another Greece or Portugal as was popular opinion a short time ago. The European Union is not a popular concept in the UK. I doubt it ever will be, and there is a possibility that the UK may leave it in the future, or be part of some other formation that will accommodate its unique and distorted perspective of the continent, and ease it finally and painfully from the days of Empire to a modern state working within and being a true part of a united Europe. However, as it currently stands, the EU has been a true blessing, for it has provided the opportunity for anyone to live and work in any other EU country, without visas and work permits, which was unimaginable forty years ago. So where does this leave the expat in Europe? Well, it is true that there is now greater uncertainty about the future than I have known for many years. However, I am and always have been an optimist and I have little time for the cynical “my glass is half empty” brigade that appears to be the most damaging part of the modern current psyche. People will always have dreams and passions, for that is the true essence of the human condition. For some, this may mean a larger home, a new car, or climbing a mountain. For many others, like myself, it is the dream of a new life, new experiences, new cultures, the opportunity to experience, taste and smell the excitement in a place that is of our own choosing and not merely based upon an accident of birth. For many, the dreams will be of a less stressful life, an opportunity to be challenged by new experiences, new and exciting work opportunities, a place where there is a high quality of life in which a young family may grow. For others, it may be the dream of a carefree, long, happy and healthy retirement, but for all it is an ‘Escape to the Sun’.

31st October saw the great and the good attend the opening of the new Angry Birds Activity Park Gran Canaria , located at the entrance of Puerto Rico’s main strip near to the bus station . The 5,500 m2 leisure facility for the south of the island has been heralded as a highly innovative and much needed tourist attraction for the town, the municipality of Mogán and Gran Canaria as a whole. Representatives of the various companies involved in the project were there to welcome press, members of the tourism industry and 550 school children who had been especially invited from across the south of the island, to bring the park to life. Officially to the general public from November 1st, entrance has been set at 15€, though residents (with residencia) who read our paper can get in for just €12.50 which also includes a 5€ voucher to spend in the Bar & Restaurant. Calvin Lucock, CEO of the company Holiday Club Canarias, Dan Mitchell, Director of Location Based Entertainment company (Rovio), Johanna Ikäheimo – Chairman of the Board for Lappset, all beamed with pride at having reached their goal just 3 months after the initial announcement was made, thanks to the help of collaborating institutions of great importance in the construction, development and projection of the park and an investment of more than €4 million. President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, spoke eloquently in English about the importance of the development not just for Puerto Rico but for the island as a whole and paid homage to the Finnish private investors responsible for bringing this worldwide brand to The Canaries. He thanked them for their confidence in Gran Canaria and was grateful that so esteemed a group were so willing to extend their global offering to the island, its tourists and its residents. The Finnish consul was also present. Francisco Gonzalez, Mayor of Mogán, spoke of his pride at being able to take part in such an important project that has not only brought jobs and a world class attraction to what he described as the number 1 municipality for tourism in the canary islands, but also has created a first in spain with the arrival of an activity park which will set the standard for family tourism. He was one of the first to give it a go (pic below). In addition, Vesa Tengman, CEO of Holiday Club Resorts, Thomas Lorenzo, Councillor for Tourism of Mogán, and various other dignitaries were in attendance from across the south of the island, to inaugurate this theme park based on characters known worldwide from the “Angry Birds” game, which still tops global download charts. Tom Smulders of the IFA hotel association was overjoyed at the prospect of such a shining example of cross cultural investment and most importantly being able to offer an attraction oriented specifically towards children and families which, he said, is a keystone to responsible tourism development. The project has been co-financed by the Sabadell bank and has meant hiring several local companies to carry out all preliminary construction work, employing eastern european workmen as well as locals to complete the first construction of its type in Spain in record time, creating what the tourist boards called the largest Angry Birds park in Europe. An agreement between the municipality of Mogán and resorts chain Holiday Club, has been announced, enhancing the recruitment of staff needed in the new theme park.

Regular readers of this newspaper will be aware that an intrepid group of adventurers raised money this year by taking a little walk across the island, travelling from Maspalomas to Fátaga on foot with a group of committed tour reps who decided to challenge themselves to do something painful in order that they could show solidarity with cancer sufferers. In their effort and to support their team leaders they managed to raise 4000€ which was awarded to local Breast Cancer Association the ACCM in Las Palmas. Chicken Jumpers I have a small dog and have often been tempted to buy him a little jumper to wear, however, every time I pick one up my husband pulls a face that indicates that if I purchase one he will pack his bags. Therefore, the doggy clothes remain on the shelves, but I have found a really cool website that sells jumpers and hats for chickens. Now you may be questioning why, you would need a jumper for a chicken, however, if you see the condition of the batteries you would understand why. There are many charities all over the world that rescue battery hens from the poor conditions of the factories. However, many of these chickens have no feathers, and this leaves them exposed to the elements. Therefore, knitted goods are required to ensure that the chickens remain warm, which is not as silly as it may seem.

With further research I discovered that there are dedicated websites to chicken clothing, and you will be amazed at what people dress their chickens in and how much time they spend on this process. Now I think the whole thing is slightly silly, however, there is something tempting about dressing all of the chickens in little Santa suits at Christmas, or as Leprechauns on St Patricks Day. REPORTING A CRIME Theresa Coe

If something is stolen, you may need to go to the police station to make a denuncia (deh-NOON-sia) or formal report for your insurance company. Although the details can be taken by phone in your own language, you still need to attend the Comisaría (police station) to obtain necessary paperwork.

LA SALA DE ESPERA

When you arrive at la sala de espera (the waiting room), you can say to the duty officer (el policía): ‘necesito hacer una denuncia sobre un robo’ (nehseh-SEE-toh a-SAIR oona deh-NOON-sia soh-breh oon roh-boh) – I need to make a report about a robbery. Although interpreters should be provided, you need to find out if they are on duty when you get there: ¿hay intérprete disponible ahora?’ (eye in-TAIR-preh-teh deespoh-NEE-bleh a-ora) – is there an interpreter available now? If the reply is negative, ask ‘when is there an interpreter here?’ ¿Cuándo hay intérprete aquí? (kwan-doh eye interpreteh akee). You might hear: por la mañana or ‘por la tarde’ (in the morning, or in the afternoon) or a timetable: ‘desde las cuatro de la tarde hasta las ocho’ (from 4 in the afternoon until 8pm).

Explain that you need an official report for the insurance: ‘necesito un informe para el seguro’ (necesito oon in-FOR-meh para el seh-GOO-roh). You need to take your passport (pasaporte) and give your address (la dirección) and your surname (apellido, pronounced a-peh-YEE-doh). They might ask where the robbery happened: ¿dónde pasó/ ocurrió el robo? And you could say ‘en mi hotel/ en la piscina/en la playa/en la calle’ (KAH-yeh) – in my hotel, at the pool, on the beach or in the street. Or maybe it happened en un bar, en un restaurante o en una discoteca. They need to know ‘when’: ¿cuándo? And at what time ¿a qué hora? To which you might reply: ayer, a las séis de la tarde (yesterday, at 6 in the afternoon) or: anoche, pero no sé a qué hora (last night, but I don´t know at what time).

Puerto Rico mourns Gisela The Community of Puerto Rico are in mourning over the loss of Gisela Crispin, a much loved, highly esteemed and long-time colleague and co-worker in the town, who died peacefully last saturday morning surrounded by those she loved. Tributes have been flooding in all week for a lady in the prime of her life and who seemed to have touched the hearts of many in the town over career spanning more than 22 years. Heartfelt condolences have been shared in particular with her brother and mother, as the whole community move through this unexpected ordeal that came as such a shock to everyone. It seems that this by all accounts wonderful lady, still vital and vibrant, was informed by a doctor only last week of her terminal cancer, after having simply gone to check up on a pain in her back. At the age of just 45 she was given only days to live. The community as a whole have been left numb at losing her with many thankful, at the very least, for the chance, no matter how brief, to say their goodbyes to their dear friend. Gisela at Chez Funnyboy, Puerto Rico As posted by one of her colleagues, on social network Facebook in one of the many public outpourings of sentiments shared throughout the south of the island, “Dear Gisela, we do not say goodbye. Always, always you will be in our hearts. Now only left for you is to rest in peace. Goodbye my love, Funny Boy Fidel and your coworkers.” Another, on the discovery of her diagnosis poignantly wrote “live, love, laugh….it’s far too short for anything else.” Many have taken this shocking event as a warning and stark reminder that prevention is always better than cure, and regular screening and visits to the doctor can be vital in the fight against disease of this nature. This devastating loss will weigh heavily on a community already so focused on helping to support the fight against cancer, but with luck it will also act as an inspiration to all, to really look after each other, and as a continual reminder that worry is no remedy, and that ignoring even the smallest signs of ill health can end in tragedy. With luck and love, and each other’s support, the Puerto Rico community will undoubtedly emerge stronger than ever from this saddest of news and in celebration of their departed friend and her life well lived; they will tell her important story in years to come as a way to conserve her memory and inspire others to longer life and better health. As one commentator put it, she taught us that “happiness only exists when shared.” Thank you Gisela, with love and laughter, rest in peace.

The day to day operations in this successful venture were coordinated under the skilled guidance of Sra. Andrea Hansen, a long time animal advocate who has dedicated decades of care, concern and hard work to addressing the problems of dog and cat overpopulation on Gran Canaria.

Firsts can be a lovely thing. So let the trumpets blare and the chorus sing! For the first time in our island history, the government has financially sponsored a project to neuter homeless dogs and cats! No, not the Spanish government, nor the island government, nor the county governments, nor the city governments. We owe a great debt of gratitude to none other than the European government. That’s right: Asocíacion Protectora de Animales Europea (European Animal Protection Association) funded 100% of this wonderful project on Gran Canaria.

The island dog and cat pound in Bañaderos served as operating and holding facilities under the auspices and assistance of the director, Sra. Maria Rosa Gonzalez Moreno, and facility veterinarian, Dr. Syra Roiz Martin. The entire project was approved by the Colegio de Veterinarios President Manolo Morales.

A Big First In Animal Welfare

An astounding 527 abandoned pets and feral felines (337 cats and 190 dogs) were neutered, sprayed for parasites, treated with antibiotics, and observed through the recovery process. Two dedicated veterinarian brothers from Bulgaria, Dr. Konstantin Antov and Dr. Vladislav Antov, were provided and all the materials and pharmaceuticals required supplied. The project lasted for 12 days and the pre-operative, surgeons, and postoperative teams worked from 0900 till at least 1600 hours every day.

Perhaps the most special aspect of this big first in Gran Canaria was the effort to include dogs and cats under the protection of several registered animal welfare associations and many private citizens throughout the island who give so much to the cause of rescuing and rehoming of abandoned and abused pets and caretaking feral feline colonies. In fact, knock on wood, this first effort was so successful that the rumblings are positive to support such a project annually. So let it be written. So let it be done. And a big BRAVA to all those determined animal lovers who helped to make it possible.

surgery. The two vets operated for hours. The biggest danger was the ruptured urethra, with the urine pouring into the body cavity and organs.

At 2300 hours on the 7th of October 2013, Monday, the Mogan police put a call out for Dr. Jesus Melo. A dog had been run over by a car between Puerto Mogan and Pueblo Mogan. It was hit and run and the dog was dead or close to it. Dr. Melo owns the Veterinarian Clinic in Pueblo Mogan. He roused himself from a comfortable sleep and drove to the scene of the accident.

The doctors managed to save Canela’s life. Dr. Melo keeps her in his clinic, providing antibiotics, keeping her free of worms and parasites (mostly fleas this time of year), monitoring her progress, providing exercise and companionship to heal the damaged leg, gives her quality food and water to pack some weight back on her, and mostly gives hours and hours of love. Such is the way of Dr. Grande Corazón (Dr. Big Heart).

There Dr. Melo found the Podenco Canario who would become Canela (Cinnamon in case someone forgets her colour). She had obviously been left behind on the previous day’s hunting excursion as these swift dogs that roam the mountains in search of rabbits often are. In her desperation to find her hunter, she had darted in front of a passing car and been struck down. Dr. Melo quickly surmised that she was bleeding internally, struggling to breathe, and dying. He rushed her to his clinic and further determined that the dog’s urethra had been ruptured and her hip broken. He didn’t have much time. He contacted his veterinarian buddy, Dr. Ayose Torrent Pérez, and asked for assistance in emergency

Jesus contacted TARA Animal Respect Association and brought our attention to Canela’s needs. He wants her with what TARA calls a Forever Home - a family of her own. Canela is walking, her limp already diminishing. Her wounds are healing, Her urethra has responded well and will probably function for the rest of her life without fail. She has put on a few pounds already. But most important, Canela has become a healthy, happy, hearty dog of about 18 months. Her fear of humans and her general timidity - a common trait of Podencos subjected to the life of typical hunting dogs, is on the mend. TARA visited Dr. Jesus and Canela at the clinic and found the pair in great spirits. Canela has been resurrected from a virtual death. When she rose back to life, she found herself in Paradise on Earth. Now all she needs to make the dream come true is you - a human of her own to love. surviving twin Alice was just 4 years old ,the legend that was Pavarotti died aged 72 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

CLIMB EVERY MONTAIN... (or somewhere over the rainbow?) “Once upon a time” stories ...after the hero has climbed every mountain, slain the dragon and survived the wicked witch ...do they always end “and they all lived happily ever after?” We probably reply in answer to that question “Of course not – only in fairy tales.” But there are some real life exceptions. Just recently I have been looking at a couple of people who are or have been coping with seemingly insurmountable odds; yet they press on, determined to do all in their power (sometimes feeling the need to call on a Higher Power) in their utter distress and heartache, to help them believe in that elusive “somewhere over the rainbow”... As a family we have two dear young friends – a guy called Owen and his fiancée of just a few short months-Joanne, who are going through an horrendous time as 28 year old Owen fights for his life following what should have been routine surgery. Complications arose and he is now climbing his very own mountain as he battles his way out of a coma and off a life support machine. Overnight the beautiful world of these two folk turned topsy-turvy. The road ahead looks as though it may be long and hard, BUT - if courage and faith in the face of this particular ‘adversity mountain’ have anything to do with the outcome then their rainbow awaits. Our prayers are with you dear friends. Last week I read the inspiring story of a shy 23 year student, Nicoletta Mantovani, who with her straight mousey locks and geeky glasses accidentally barged into the office of an imposing 58 year old ultra famous giant of a man. She was a temp in his admin team, and he the world renowned tenor who brought opera to the masses, becoming a household name through his 1990 World Cup rendering of Nessun Dorma – Luciano Pavarotti . They fell in love. The couple enjoyed all that money could buy in terms of a lifestyle of fame, and luxury. But wealth alone could not “buy off” the massive mountains they came to face. They married amidst much controversy, but in the belief that “love conquers all” they were a couple who always chose to see the glass half full.

Did this heartbroken young widow hide away to grieve and mourn for what might have been? “No” she declares. “Luciano would never have wanted me to live in the past”. So she fought her MS through rather unconventional methods refusing to contemplate a wheel chair, she decided to concentrate on making a great life for their daughter, which helped her cope, and little by little opened her heart to a new love. In the epic movie “The Sound of Music” the decision to stay or leave the convent becomes agonising for novice nun Maria. She is given some advice when she faces this crossroads in her life as the Mother Superior sings the well known refrain “Climb every mountain” All of us will have to learn to face our own personal mountains in life....large or small. What can we learn from these rather extreme examples of ‘climbers’...one an ordinary but very special young man and dear friend with his whole life before him as with courage and determination he bravely fights to overcome his illness and realise his dream come true .. to marry his darling fiancee. We are supporting you in prayer and rooting for you Owen...all the way to the top. And then, worlds away in totally different circumstances another ‘mountaineer’ - widow of a world famous man, who has been given another chance...having climbed massive mountains to arrive at a place where, in her own words, Nicoletta Luciano is able to say; “Life is really how you deal with it - you are the one to decide. I could say ‘Oh my God, I am sick with MS, I lost my husband, I lost my child, I am so miserable. Or I can choose to say - I have MS but I have been given the opportunity to feel better. I lost my husband but God gave me another love. I lost my son, but I still have a fantastic daughter.” On a less metaphorical and much more physical mountain-top, congrats to Ed the Intrepid (Editor) who this year climbed (literally) his own mountain as he and the team scaled up over the top and down the other side of our very own island. He forged a personal best in terms of stickability and goal reaching. You will see elsewhere in this edition comprehensive details of the trek and all walkers’ stories. So much fun and camaraderie; so many targets reached; so much money raised for a great cause, so many survivors who have climbed their personal breast cancer mountain, so much more awareness of the need for cancer research, as together we strive to take the old nun’s advice...
