Cancer is the result of mutation at the genes responsible for the growth and health at the cells in the body. When this abnormal proliferation occurs in the chest cells it is called breast cancer. Breast cancer cells may continue dividing without a halt resulting in a tumour.

Even without obvious symptoms breast cancer development can be associated with a family history of the disease, early onset of menstruation, late menopause, dense breast tissue, exposure to carcinogens, the use of oral contraceptives, or drinking excessive alcohol

Who Gets it? Breast cancer is common to women but men are also susceptible to the disease. People who have it may not show any symptoms at all, especially in its early stages; but a new lump or mass in the breast can be indicative of a potential breast cancer. Generally any change to the breast appearance, its texture or pain can all be a sign a breast cancer, nipple discharge or redness, nipple pain, dimpling or swelling of the breast can also be a sign of the condition. Breast cancer has better prognosis when treated in its early stages. All women are advised to undergo routine screening procedures to detect breast cancer earlier. Monthly breast self-examination, clinical breast examination and mammography are the recommended routine screening procedures to detect it.

Breast Awareness - Knowing your own body Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine. Each year there are approximately 41,000 new diagnoses. The incidence of breast cancer for men is on the increase too with approximately 300 new cases diagnosed yearly (in the UK). It has been shown that early detection of breast cancer can improve the outcome. Survival rates from breast cancer have improved partly in recent years due to early presentation and from individuals being breast aware. [Source: MumAbroad.com]

What Is Breast Awareness? Breast awareness is a process of knowing what is normal for you and becoming familiar with the appearance of your breasts. It is about being aware of your breasts when carrying out daily activities such as washing and dressing. By looking and feeling and becoming more familiar with your breasts at different times you can become more breast aware. You do not have to examine your breasts in a particular way or at a particular time. Do what feels best for you and make breast awareness a normal part of caring for your body. 90% of cases of breast cancer are

detected by women themselves or by their partners. By being breast aware and knowing what is normal for you will be able to detect any changes, should they happen.

Follow the Breast Awareness Five Point Code: • Know what is normal for you • Look and feel • Know what changes to look for • Report any changes without delay • Attend for breast screening The Normal Breast It is important to know what is normal to expect breasts to feel like and also how they can change throughout your lifetime. Before the menopause breasts feel different at different times of the month, as they are affected by the hormonal changes in the milk producing tissue. For some women their breasts may feel lumpy or tender before a period. After the menopause the breasts will not be affected by monthly hormonal changes and will feel less firm, softer and without lumps. If you have had a hysterectomy your breasts will usually show the same monthly changes until the time when your periods would have stopped Changes to Look Out For When looking at and feeling your breasts be aware of anything that is new for you or that is not normal for you. Look for any changes in the skin, any puckering or dimpling. Look and feel for any lumps or bumps, especially

It is important to know what sort of changes to look out for, but it is equally important to report them to your doctor / Nurse without delay. You will not be wasting anybody’s time and the earlier any problems are detected the easier the treatment is likely to be. Breast Screening Programme The risk of breast cancer increases with age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. In Spain, women over the age of 50 are offered routine mammograms to help detect breast changes at a very early stage. Women under the age of 50 are offered breast screening when the need arises. Though we believe that prevention and early detection is your best line of defense. Throughout Europe many different screening programmes exist. Thermography has become an outdated modality of investigation, and most data on the use of this technique are now nearly over 10 years out of date. It is not used by any major western government health care screening programme because the technique is associated with an unacceptable false positive (over-diagnosis) and false negative (missed disease) rate. Some recent research claims that thermography with surface cooling may be a sensitive test, but this has yet to be fully evaluated and is not widely available outside of research institutions. More exciting is the recent emergence of MRI (Magnetic Resonance scanning) in the detection of breast cancer. Currently costs limit its use, but in those patients where ultrasound and mammography are not been diagnostic, MRI scans can help doctors decide whether or not to operate.

The Holistic View From the Gran Canaria Holistic Centre As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. There are a lot of activities planned, not least the charity walk from Maspalomas via Molino de Agua in Fatage to Pico de las Nieves on the 4th and 5th of October.

Reiki is just one of a host of complementary therapies and techniques that can be used to improve the well-being of a cancer patient, helping to overcome the adverse effects of chemo and radiotherapy. Reiki is already widely used in hospitals throughout many countries around the world; the USA, Belgium, England and Switzerland to name but a few. It is also being taught in the School of Nursing in Las Palmas.

We’ve been working on new approaches to creating awareness and support for those who are not just going through the trauma of cancer, but also their support network too. BREAST EXAMINATION Self examination should be performed regularly every month preferably on a fixed day of each month. Just follow these simple instructions:

Breast Cancer Early Diagnosis Unit Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among the female population. It is fundamental to make women aware of the importance of knowing self-examination techniques, of regular check-ups and breast scans.

1. Standing in front of a mirror with your arms down and check that your breasts are still the size and shape they usually have been, that your skin is smooth and has no wrinkles or roughness and the lower edge is regular.

The importance of detecting breast cancer early on through breast scans is fundamental as early detection changes the story of the disease, because it is a critical factor in the evolution and consequences of the disease. Early diagnosis is vital because the chances of curing the disease depend on this and may be as high as 100% if the disease is detected in time.

Women should learn to know their body well and be able to recognize any warning signs. Specialists recommend that every woman over 20 should self-examine their breasts every month. Over 25, it is recommended that a specialist examine their breasts every year. Women over 40 should undergo a breast scan regularly. It only takes paying a little attention to any changes in the breasts and if any change is noticed, you should go to your doctor immediately, he/she is the only person who can decide, through specific tests like the breast scan, if it is cancer or not.

Self-examination can be carried out in front of a mirror to detect any change in colour and texture of the breasts. Once both breasts have been checked visually, the examination should be completed by palpating the breast

Another month passes and this one has not been quite so strong for the pound, so what has happened to influence exchange rates?

From the UK figures out showed that retail sales slowed and disappointed in August as retail sales fell 1.0% on the month - the first month on month fall for 4 months and alarmingly the biggest fall in more than 1 year. Clearly people were looking at their waistlines as food sales saw the largest fall. Better news came from car sales where the UK saw increases sales completely bucking the trend seen across the Eurozone. Latest information from the Office for National Statistics indicates The UK’s public finances showed a smaller than expected deficit for August helped in part by a cut back in government spending and we could be looking at the UK coming in below its budget for borrowing at around £107 billion rather than the target of £120billion all brighter news going forward. The Cooperative Bank is still very much in the news and has caved in to bondholder pressure as it seeks to work out how to restructure it’s banking arm. Most of the talk this month however has been centred on the Eurozone and of course the victory in the German elections for Mrs Merkel as she wins her third term in office with a promise to continue the successful path Germany has been treading. Data from Germany is showing the manufacturing and services sector both rising again in September which shows business conditions are solid and continues to show its strength as the strongest among Eurozone countries. France thankfully also saw expansion as the private sector at last rose to its highest for 18 months and saw a figure of 50.2 up from 48.8. With both of the above mentioned countries showing improvement they contributed greatly to an improved reading for the Eurozone taking it to a 27 month high of 52.1 for September which interestingly was also the steepest growth since April 2011. The downside still remains in Italy where the government has raised its debt and deficit forecast for 2014 which confirms weaker growth in the country and they now expect the economy to contract around 1.7% this year. Greece still rumbles on and unfortunately is hit by a further round of public sector strikes just at the time the committee from the EU and IMF visit to agree the release of a further 1 billion euros as part of the previously agreed bailout package. Great news from Ireland came out of recession in Q2, helped by exports and consumer spending and further good news for the Eurozone came when inflation fell to 1.3% in August down form the July figure of 1.6%. and is expected to remain below the European Central Bank’s (ECB) 2% target through 2014. This should give the ECB plenty of scope to keep interest rates “at present or lower levels for an extended period of time”, as stated by President Draghi. Even with the good or improved news from the Eurozone its still hard to understand why the European Parliament is to pay out a massive £174million for new buildings in Brussels!! Across the water at last the news is out, initially the Federal Reserve in the US was expected to slow its quantitative easing (QE) purchases last week and reduce the amount of monthly bond-buying from the existing level of $85bn a month, however it did surprise most people when it agreed to continue the bond-buying at its present level of $85bn a month. For Americans the expectation of a interest rate rise had also seen their monthly costs for their mortgage and other household items increase so the Federal Reserve may have been a bit concerned that any further increases could create a slow down in consumer spending. It seems however the decision when it was taken was a close call. For the USA and The Federal Reserve the next issue is, who will replace Mr Bernanke and of course the decision to taper may wait until the new person is appointed. Monthly unemployment across the States held out , even though the last weeks figures were slightly higher than expected. WOW! Portofino is one of the restaurants along Amardores Beach that as a family we love, and we often take friends there when we want to enjoy a relaxed meal, with excellent staff, for a reasonable price. There is something magical about eating dinner, watching the sun set with a glass of wine in hand. We have been going to Portofino for many years, and have never had a bad meal. The food that is served is a mixed bag, and you can get everything from steak dishes to pizza’s and anything in between. The kids enjoy being able to choose more than chicken nuggets, and everything is delicious and fresh. The staff are brilliant, they are friendly, experienced and not over whelming which is a pleasant change.

Dear Editor, After having read your paper and reading the “Where to eat” section, I felt I had to make you aware of Al Ponte in Puerto Rico. My Son and I had a fantastic meal in this restaurant. The staff were so friendly and the service was excellent. The starters were delicious and very well presented. My Son ordered Calzone, which is his favourite Italian dish, this Calzone was amazing. I didn’t think my Son would eat it all as it was large with loads of filling but he ate the lot and said it was the best one he had ever had. I ordered Ravioli with gorgonzola cheese and spinach, this dish was cooked to perfection with a tasty filling. This meal was not only the best meal of our holiday but the best Italian meal we have ever had. Thank you Al Ponte.

A real zest for freshness & quality The Lemon Tree only opened in June this year but is already a rising star in Puerto Rico’s plethora of restaurants. Two friends who met while working the popular tourist town quickly realised they had similar ideas about the samey, mass produced menus offered by so many of the eaterie into which customers are often cramped after having been dragged in off the street. Their idea was to create a noticably different style of restaurant in a space that would normally seat over 120 clients, but to arrange the eating area so as to only accommodate 60 or so. This would enable all to eat comfortably without being constantly bashed into by chairs or other clientele while waiting staff could serve the tables with ease, creating a sense of space and occasion. Secondly they wanted to create a menu that would reflect their professional talents as highly qualified Chefs preferring to create individual dishes from fresh rather than freezer or packet. Third was the location, their desire was for somewhere with a great view, without the loud, pumping music constantly in ear shot at most other Puerto Rico establishments, yet still somewhere only a few minutes away from all the local night life. And they wanted to provide all of this at the most reasonable prices. The Lemon Tree restaurant is all of these things and more. From the moment you walk in you are treated to a uniquely wonderful view over both harbours and the beach, which only improves as the sun sets providing an ambiance of romance and comfort. The seating is well appointed to provide several distinct open sectiones, with tables for two, four or more as well as a separate dining area by the bar, perfect for a group or small party. The menu is designed to be enjoyed with palns to update regularly. The desserts are hand made and fresh every day. The Lemon Tree, run by Jock and Paul, is quickly making a name for itself due to its fresh produce and their insistence on proudly creating each meal as ordered so as to provide a worldly experience that cannot be rushed. Once you have finished your meal you’ll not be run off either. Customers are encouraged to have a drink, sample the wide range of wines, or settle into a relaxed evening in the lounge area or patio and simply watch the world drift by, or enjoy the live music that comes with the regular Tuesday night barbacue. The lounge and bar are welcoming enough making a nice place to meet friends, even if you are not dining, though it is likely that your apitites will be awoken by the gorgeous aromas that drift from the kitchen. struggle. The deserts are the only part of the meal that I ever feel are a letdown, as they are shop bought, and never very exciting, but the kids love the ice cream selection. As with everywhere the complimentary drink is a nice addition, and you never feel rushed to leave the table, or the restaurant. Many a night have we sat and talked for far too long, when everyone else had left the area. Perhaps the menu needs updating, as in all the years we have been going to Portofino they have never changed the choice. Is that a bad thing, or does that make you want to return, as you know exactly what you are going to get? If you want a top quality meal, for an affordable price this family run restaurant is an excellent choice.

On a recent visit we choose to have the Garlic Chicken, Mixed kebab, Calzone and Tuna steak, all of which were excellently presented, and delicious. You are given a choice of potatoes with your meal, and every meal is accompanied by Food: rice, and salad. There is something for everyone, and even vegetarians do not

As this was our first holiday to Gran Canaria, we found the map page of Puerto Rico extremely useful especially when running the annoying gauntlet of people trying to drag us into their establishment. We were able to state and find a specific bar from the map which stopped much of the engagement. (It could also be rolled up and used to swat them with LOL). It came as some surprise when a British Consular official in the Costa Blanca announced to me during an interview that, “One must remember that the Brits come here to die.” The comment astounded and puzzled me, as the evidence that I had was completely to the contrary. British expats did anything and everything but move to Spain to die. I had never seen a livelier bunch of over seventies! Looking back, if the truth had been known at that time, it was the British Consular services in Spain that was nearing the end of its useful life, as it continues to be managed, mismanaged, reorganised, renamed and repackaged into near oblivion, which demonstrates a far shorter shelf life than the average British expat living in Spain. I contrast this to expat life in the Canary Islands. One of the few things that I dislike is the transitory nature of life on the islands. It is very difficult to make and keep friends who intend to stay for any length of time, and truly regard the islands as their permanent home. I know many people, after all it is a small community, but my heart sinks when I hear them talk about “going home to the UK”. By the time that we get to know them as friends, it seems that most have either lost their jobs, relationships have been destroyed, they are in financial difficulties or they cannot stand the heat (in more ways than one). Many realise too late that to truly enjoy life on these beautiful islands, they also have to put something back. Low pay, long hours, periods of unemployment and poor employment prospects really do have to be taken into account, and the lessthan-determined expat quickly realises that there is no such thing as a free sun-bed.

Unlike the Costa Blanca, many people that we know come and go after a few months or a few years. Very few intend to stay on the islands and make it their home. Of course, there are exceptions, but these are few. If I return to the comment made by the British Consular official in the Costa Blanca, I would say that people move to the Canary Islands to work, and certainly not to die. Sadly, due to the recession, and even before the recession, there are not jobs for all and many return to the countries of origin sadder, but wiser. Expats CC by-nc-sa 2.0 Bec Plumbe

As a newspaper reporter in Spain’s Costa Blanca, I quickly came to love and admire some of my fellow expats, who were enthusiastically determined not to let old age and growing infirmity get in the way of having a really good time. Clubs and associations flourished everywhere and new ones seemed to be appearing all the time. From salsa classes, brass bands and stamp collecting to tap dancing for the over eighties, there really was something for everyone to enjoy. I sometimes wondered how they all had the energy, as we were summoned to various neighbours’ terraces for “a quick drink” that rarely ended until two o’clock the following morning.

We all value friendships, and I don’t mean cursory acquaintances, such as the “You must call and see me sometime” brigade, but those for whom you have a genuine empathy with and feeling for. These are the people that you would do anything for and know that it would be reciprocated. True friendships are rare and I guess most of us would count ourselves fortunate if we have enough true friends to match the fingers of one hand. Island friendships are difficult to sustain and lack the support structures of the Costa Blanca. I now often find myself subconsciously gauging just how long new friends are likely to stay the course on the islands before I invest too much time and energy in getting to know them properly. Experience tells me that within a few months or a couple of years, most will return to the land of their birth and will become just another name on a Christmas card list. As we depart the coastal sand dunes of Maspalomas and as we make our way to the mountainous interior through the most ancient volcanic valley on this beautiful but, far-flung sub-tropical island paradise, the natives will be watching our every move. Over three days we aim to cover 75km, travelling through the island’s rustic heartland, following in part the Camino de Santiago, climbing almost 2000m to the top of the mountain before crossing it’s ancient crater Las Cumbres, hoping, while we pass, that it’s deep rumblings spill forth no more of the torrid and violent sea of sub-Atlantic rock from which the very island of Gran Canaria was forged some 4.5 million years ago.

We will be meeting from 1pm at the RIU Palace hotel Dunes for a little photoshoot and will be joined by friends and supporters from the TARA Animal Respect Association who are celebrating World Animal Welfare Day. We would love for anyone who wishes to join us there to take part in the photographs before we prepare to leave on our epic 2013 journey across the mountain. We will be leaving promptly at 1355 and walking 3.5 km straight through Playa del Inglés to La Casa Viejea. There our leaving party will leave us as we stroll at some pace off into the rustic wilds of Gran Canaria. Again, please do join us in Fataga for Friday evenings celebration.

To prove it, Thomson Holidays are sending nearly all of their young reps walking with us! They have been raising sponsorship and training hard (we hope)! Their task is to walk from the dunes of Maspalomas, through Playa del Inglés, up through San Fernando, stopping briefly at the La Casa Vieja Restaurant and then heading off into the hills through some of the most stunning countryside on the south of the island to Fataga. Saying the right thing

Often we get the gist of people´s news but aren´t sure how best to respond. Useful words are felicitaciones (congrats) and lo siento mucho (I´m so sorry). Or depending on the circumstances, you could reply: ¡Qué buena/mala noticia! (what good/bad news). Many exclamations start with what, not how, eg: ¡Qué emocionante! (how exciting) or ¡Qué fatal! (how awful). So when you get a present you can say: ¡Qué generoso! Estoy muy agradecido/a. (How generous. I´m very grateful). Here are more suggestions for responding in different situations.

Good News Birthday: Es mi cumpleaños hoy (it´s my birthday today) Response: Muchas felicidades (many happy returns) or: feliz cumpleaños (happy birthday). ¿Cómo vas a celebrarlo? (how are you going to celebrate it?) and maybe ¿cuántos años cumples? (how old are you?)

Bad news In hospital: Mi padre está en hospital (My father´s in hospital) Response: Lo siento mucho. ¿Qué le pasa? (I´m so sorry. What´s the matter with him?) Maria Luisa Herrera Ramos A tireless campaigner, she founded The Canarian Breast Cancer and Gynaecological Cancer Association in December 2001, a non profit organization whose purpose is to complement the activities of existing institutions, focusing on the development of social and emotional support for women to help them achieve a better quality of life and general well-being through health promotion, extending support activities to their families, and to the entire resident population of the Autonomous Community of The Canary Islands. Marisa Herrera has been a woman committed to these women’s personal and social reality which she has shown through her unfaltering commitment to providing and highlighting breast cancer risk and the advances that have been made in this area, both preventive, and in the form of advanced treatments, all managed under the umbrella of the ACCM Canarian Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Association, of which she is the President. She is a woman of great values, expressed in her very human qualities, her selfless and caring capacity, and especially through her perseverance with governmental institutions in order to highlight those diseases that are particularly relevant to women and keeping them on the political agendas of local, regional and islands-wide government. She is undoubtedly, a woman committed to removing barriers and inequalities that stand in all walks of life and specifically in the field of health. Accepting her award from the Mayor of Teror at the main town square surrounded by dignitaries she said “It is a privilege to receive this distinction. I’ve al-

ways been someone who is rooted to the earth and Teror is the best in the world, the place where I was born and grew up with my parents and my grandparents. Being named Favourite Daughter is something that fills me very emotionally, and it is the greatest honour ever to have been given to me in life. Margarita Ramos Quintana was born in Teror, in the village of Arbejales. Her studies started with law at the University of La Laguna, where she later received her doctorate. She has visited foreign and national universities in order to carry out projects in the field of legal research (at Bologna, Lyon, St. Etiénne, Salamanca) and has published a large volume of work contributing to the fields of Labour Law and Social Security. Favourite Son of Teror was Carlos Guillermo, international writer, a journalist, specializing in Children’s Books Information from the Official School of Journalism. “Insignias de Oro” Gold Badges were awarded to the Banda de Musica de Teror, a wonderful orchestra primarily made up of brass and wind instruments founded in 1884, who treated the audience to a most

excellent program of well known classics, Western Movie themes and locally composed music popular throughout the Canary Islands. And a gold badge also was awarded to the Rancho de Ánimas, one of the oldest preserved manifestations of traditional popular culture, working to this day. Three local businesses also received Gold Badges, all involved in

the production of one of Teror’s most famous exports, the “Chorizo de Teror” one of the famous flavours of the island, essentially a local chorizo sausage, which is served as a sausage meat paste. The companies honoured were Los Nueces, CarB and Terorero; three family businesses that have helped spread Teror’s fame throughout the islands and well beyond.

ELVIS ROCKS THE ROCK FOR TARA

Yes, it is true. The King of Rock and Roll will be entertaining for TARA Animal Respect once again. It was 7 short years ago: the inimitable Paul Thorpe left Gran Canaria, his last Elvis Show a charity bash for TARA. The lovely Sara O’Neill has reached out to Paul once again. He has agreed to make his triumphant return to Paradise for a one off show for – you guessed it – TARA Animal Charity. Sara is the owner of El Cardonal Pool Bar in Sonnenland. She has offered her venue as the place to be for this historical event. In addition to the extraordinary King of R&R, there will be DJs and live entertainers, fab food (including BBQ), beverages galore, make-up specialists for the glamour-minded guys and gals in our community, a raffle, and

as a very special treat: Ed the Ed will be auctioning off the hair on Brian’s chest. The winning bidder gets to remove it with hot wax provided by Helen Cordingley of Elegance – Hair, Nails, Beauty, Massage. Walk on the Wild Side TARA Animal Respect Association is throwing all in for The Long Walk II. This is the second year that our island community is organizing a spectacular nature walk in support of ACCM (breast and gynecological cancer prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation). Joining the event this year are Thomson Holidays (TUI UK). The Canary News, an important and much appreciated supporter of TARA, has embraced the event wholeheartedly. TARA discovered that some of the funds raised will be going to the UK charity the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). That was a clincher: children, women, nature how could any cause be more worthy? Unsurprisingly, TARA decided the answer to this unanswerable question is HOMELESS PETS! The trumpets blared, the hallelujahs were issued, a few genuflections here and there, and Walla! TARA is pleased and proud to be part of this celebration of Paradise and our community determination to be doers of good deeds! We will be celebrating our women, our children, our pets, and our gorgeous island!

We invite all TARA supporters to step forward (several hundred thousand times before it is all said and done) and walk on the wild side to raise public consciousness (and the odd bob or two) for these grand and glorious causes. TARA volunteers will be walking TARA homeless dogs (looking for their chance for a Forever Home of their own). If you have a dog that loves to stroll on lead side by side with her favorite human, then do the right thing and bring her along. The views will be sumptuous, the air fresh, the fauna fantabulous, the fun ferocious. All TARA supporters will be given a top-of-the-line TARA T-shirt (only one line, so it is the top) and asked to donate energy, enthusiasm, and enjoyment. Find a sponsor (or be one yourself) to donate ONE to ONE MILLION EUROS to TARA. There have been several ONE EURO donations, but never a ONE MILLION EURO donation (not yet anyway). In truth, the bottom line for TARA is pro-active participation in one of the biggest and most important charity drives of the year. If you, a family member or a friend have a hankering to see more of our incomparable Paradise, get a bit fitter, and help women, children, pets, and Mother Earth, rock and roll and gutchy goo with your community by contacting your FACEBOOK friends at TARA. The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons, and the color pink in general, identify the wearer or promoter with the breast cancer brand and express moral support for women with breast cancer. Pink ribbons are most commonly seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

History The first known use of a pink ribbon in connection with breast cancer awareness was in the fall of 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. The pink ribbon was adopted as the official symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the next year, in 1992. The pink ribbon was derived from the popular red ribbon for AIDS awareness. Alexandra Penney, the editor-in-chief of the women’s health magazine Self, and breast cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder, the senior corporate vice president at the cosmetics company Estée Lauder created a ribbon for the cosmetics giant to distribute in stores in New York City. Estée Lauder and Self initially approached Charlotte Haley, who had began a peachcoloured ribbon campaign to press the National Cancer Institute to increase its budget for cancer prevention research. Haley refused to be part of what she felt was a commercial effort, so Estée Lauder and Self changed the color of their ribbon to light pink in 2005, to circumvent Haley’s efforts to stop them. A pink and blue ribbon is sometimes used to symbolize breast cancer in men, which is relatively rare. The pink and blue ribbon was designed in 1996 by Nancy Nick, president and founder of the John W. Nick Foundation to bring awareness that “Men Get Breast Cancer Too!”

Meaning The color pink is considered feminine in modern Western countries. It evokes traditional feminine gender roles, caring for other people, being beautiful, being good, and being cooperative. The pink ribbon represents fear of breast cancer, hope for the future, and the charitable goodness of people and businesses who publicly support the breast cancer movement.
