Set to be the sparkliest wedding of the century on the 7th of October 2011, Steve and Tony, Lou and Lol invited the world to, you’ve guessed it, Sparkles Showbar in Playa del Inglés, to celebrate what was being billed as, not only the most glamorous affair of the year but, the first double gay wedding of its type to be held here in the Canaries or anythere in Spain, presided over by the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana

Perez is no stranger to same sex causes and was a guest speaker at this years Maspalomas Pride civic reception, before the local elections, where he promised to continue to put sympathy for gay issues at the heart of his administration if and when he became mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Perez was also the serving Mayor ten years ago when the decision was taken to officially sanction the Maspalomas Gay Pride event on an annual basis, an event which now draws between 50,000 and 100,000 revellers every year.

Roberto Herrera told us “He is very forward thinking, the problems with his party are only really on the mainland, here politicians are a little more open minded and Marco Perez is a real innovator when it comes to sexual freedoms and equalities.”

Steven and Tony and their colleagues at Sparkles Showbar have in recent years played an integral role in the life of the Gay & Lesbian Association of the Yumbo, donating large amounts to the production of Gary Pride and associated charities.

President of GLAY, Derek Payne, told us “this is just such a wonderful day, and a historic day, the first time that members of our committee have married, the first double wedding of boys and girls in the Canaries and we think in the whole of Spain.”

This historic event was the product of many months hard work from wedding planner extraordinarie Sonja Arup, who not only looked after nearly all of the arrangements but also found time to create a blog for the event tracking their progress and allowing well wishers to leave messages for the happy couples. She was assisted by the tireless Carolina Mejía and the exquisite catering was provided by the Yumbo’s very own celebrity chef Tom Greb of Facecook

Gay Marriage Same sex marriages have been legal in Spain since 2005, with Spain being only the third country in the world to pass the legislation. Although the Canary Islands, along with several other autonomous regions, has recognized civil partnerships since 2003, according to the Spanish Constitution only the State Government has the power to change marital law.

Same sex marriage finally became legal on the 2nd of July 2005 after a long and convoluted political battle. Although two thirds of the Spanish population approved of the legislation, the Partido Popular, which has strong ties with the Roman Catholic Church, opposed the bill. The PSOE, with Zapatero at the head, was determined to see the bill passed, and was supported by all political parties other than the PP and the Democratic Union of Catalonia. The Bill itself is extremely simple, consisting of a short addition to article 44 of the civil code: Matrimony shall have the same requisites and effects regardless of whether the persons involved are of the same or different sex.

The Spanish Constitution requires that the reigning monarch endorse any new legislation, and there was some speculation as to whether or not King Juan Carlos would approve the bill, but he gave his royal assent on the 1st of July 2005, finalizing the process.

Eight days after the new law came in to force, the first same sex marriage took place in Madrid. A month later, in August, three same sex couples on Gran Canaria were refused marriage licences by a judge who went on to mount a

constitutional challenge. The challenge was rejected in December 2005.

Currently there is some unease amongst the gay community, as the PP again challenge the same sex marriage law.

The PP says that it is only challenging the name of the partnership, stating that it is unconstitutional to call a same sex partnership marriage, and that gay couples rights would not be affected.

Almost 4% of all marriages taking place in the Canary Islands are same sex, the highest percentage in all of Spain. This is hardly surprising, as Gran Canaria is considered the gay centre of Europe, and many homosexual men and women choose to make their homes here because the island is so gay friendly, and they do not suffer the prejudices and abuses they might suffer elsewhere. ‘Gay bashing’ and verbal abuse are unheard of here, allowing couples to live their lives openly and peacefully.

Whilst there is no doubt that anti-gay sentiment, and even homophobia does exist here, most gays never come up against it. Opinions that may be voiced in private are not publicly expressed, particularly in the business world, where the pink Euro is recognized as king, and is well catered for.

In certain sectors of Gran Canaria society homosexuality is not permitted for religious reasons, and anti-gay sentiment is not uncommon amongst older members of the population, but although many people stand against homosexuality as a concept, most of them are tolerant and not judgemental, often including gay couples in their social circle.

El Hierro Volcano

After significant earthquake activity and constant monitoring it seems for now that the danger of a full eruption has passed. El Hierro, the youngest of The Canary Islands, has been likened to a giddy teenager by local press.

New Flea Market

Arguineguin - The City Council of Mogan has announced the licensing of a big, new Flea Market (RASTRO, Car Boot, Flohmart, Loppe Marked) which began October 1st. It will transpire each and every Saturday thereon from 0800 till 1400 hours.

The Flea Market offers citizens, residents, and tourists a chance to buy and sell second-hand goods (previously owned treasures) and homemade items (art from skilled and gifted artists), whilst enjoying the company and conversation of those from near and far. Musicians are encouraged to set-up and play/sing/ dance/and busk to their hearts’ content.

The venue is the spectacular Plaza Negro.

This perfect locale features a gorgeous, broad sand beach, indoor and outdoor childrens’ playgrounds, and lovely stretches of plush grass. The parking is free and the public facilities clean. The enormous square for displaying goods is black-topped and each of nearly 700 selling spots is painted and numbered.

All this is surrounded by palm trees, cafes, bars, restaurants, and retail outlets of many varieties.

So began the recent news report on Telecanarias, which filmed a September group session of the ‘Intercambio de Idiomas’ at Café Florin in Playa del Inglés.

Free for all The language exchange group (LEG) is a free initiative launched six months ago by Spanish and English tutor and Canary News contributor Theresa Coe. We´re delighted that this service, which matches people with speaking partners for a wide range of languages all over the island, has now received national news coverage across both Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

The television report, which appeared three times, aired on the ‘Informativos’ and then on Buenos días Canarias the following morning. Stressing the importance of being able to speak and understand key languages to obtain work in these difficult times, newsreader Marta Modina provocatively added that existing private academies now have new competition from a language service that is totally free: “al alcance de todos” (accesible to everyone).

When interviewed about why she launched the initiative, Theresa cited her frustration at the way English, German and Spanish are taught in most schools, with too much emphasis on grammar and writing, and little opportunity for speaking and understanding in real-life situations.

Help finding work A number of participants shared their reasons for taking part in the ‘intercambio de idiomas’, with Canarian Ana Lozano explaining that while she could write English well, she needed more practice speaking in order to improve her chances of finding work again.

“Lo que piden siempre es dominar el inglés y no tengo problemas con el escrito, pero sí, con el hablado” (what they always ask for is good English and I don´t have problems with the written stuff, but I do with the speaking). Francisco Casti, another local who attends

the tri-monthly group sessions, said that they helped him maintain his spoken English, so crucial in his work at an international shipping company in Las Palmas. He also practices Swedish out of personal interest, having lived there when he was younger.

Regular Gisela Borowy, who´s retired, gave her reasons for attending the Playa del Inglés meetings as needing Spanish for daily life on the island, in exchange for which she helps Canarians with their German.

Reporter Cristina Suarez continued: “Abogados, médicos, profesores, hosteleros, estudiantes y desempleados son los mayores fans de este método que usan, sobre todo, con fines laborales” (lawyers, doctors, teachers, hotelworkers, students and unemployed people are the biggest fans of this method that they employ, above all, for work-related reasons). She observed that: “Se admite cualquier nivel y no hay límite de edad” (people at all levels can take part and there´s no agerestriction).

In addition, coordinator Theresa is happy to suggest appropriate Spanish speaking partners for one-to-one conversations close to where you live or work.

However, it should be stressed that the aim of this service is to practice conversation, alternating between your language and theirs, NOT to replace structured classes in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Even so, it can provide an ideal complement to your formal studies, useful speaking practice to those who already have a good level, and a viable alternative to those who can´t afford prívate tuition to improve their conversational Spanish.

Cancer Beaten by Early Diagnosis ACCM conference reveals that nine out of ten breast cancers are cured by early diagnosis.

Paulino Rivero defended the future of free mammograms, which have lowered cancer mortality rates, at the IX Conference on Breast and Gynaecological Cancer this week organised by Marisa Herrera’s ACCMyG charity.

LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA Early diagnosis and prevention are the two key weapons in the fight against cancer. Among the most common diseases such as breast cancer and prostate cancer, early stage diagnosis means a cure for nine out of ten patients.

“This is due not only to technical advances and new drugs, but also to the vital screening programs that have meant that the majority of patients with these diseases can be diagnosed very early, unlike 30 years ago” stated the director of the Canarian Institute for Cancer Research (ICIC), Pedro Lara, on Wednesday at the IX Breast Cancer and Gynaecological Conference, inaugurated by the President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, the Minister for Health, Bridget Mendoza, the president of the University of Las Palmas, José Regidor, and the president of the ACCMyG (Canarian Association of Breast and Gynaecological Cancer), Marisa Herrera, among others.

Melinda spoke of the difference between transient beauty - our outward appearance which, however attractive nevertheless will fade over time and an inner loveliness –that special everlasting beauty of character formed from spiritual attributes.

Earlier this month I was privileged to attend a superb ‘time out’ weekend at the luxurious Melia Tamarindos Hotel in San Agustin. The hotel is a superb facility…a veritable haven for a ‘get-away-from-it-all’ weekend, it certainly lived up to its 5 star rating …elegant rooms, superb food and relaxing facilities.

This was the fifth bi-lingual annual retreat sponsored by the Christian Life International Church, Gran Canaria.

It was planned this year just for CLIC family ladies and some friends with 46 attending.

Ladies of several different nationalities - young, old, married and single - were encouraged by our speaker,

CLIC Pastor Melinda Henderson (picture – third from the left front row) to enjoy 2 days of rest, relaxation and refreshing, with a lot of fun and friendship thrown in .She did not have to twist our arms for us to comply with that one.

Melinda is a gifted speaker and passionate about her Christian faith - her teaching was dynamic and inspirational .The conference title was “Beauty that

We were of course encouraged to look after our physical bodies and appearance –“nothing wrong with that providing it does not become all consuming” she said.

We studied good and Godly qualities that would make for a person of beautiful character. Humility, integrity, compassion, love, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, service and sacrifice, were discussed at length.

Physical beauty is fleeting and soon fades doesn’t it?

Personally I know that my beautifying lotions and potions are losing the battle! Therefore I will simply surrender to my encroaching wrinkles, and “Bingo wings” and spend more time putting into practice the things we learned on the ladies retreat –ever aspiring to a ‘shapely character over a shapely figure’ and a deeper inner beauty …beauty that will last.

Quick & Cheap Divorce?

I got married six months ago but I cannot go on like I have been with my husband.

Is there any kind of quick divorce? How much does it cost? How long do I have to be married before I can get divorced?

Can I just leave the house and tell him that my lawyer will be in touch with him?

It just needs to have been at least three months since the wedding was celebrated before you can apply for divorce whether the complaint is uncontested or contested.

It is not necessary to plead the causes of the divorce or to apply for the previous separation. You do not have to wait the full three months if you can prove the existence of risks to your life, personal safety, freedom or moral integrity or to mutual children as well as for children of one spouse. It is important to understand that there are two different types of divorce: - Uncontested divorce This process can turn out to be comparatively quick, simple and cheap. It does not require going to trial as presenting the divorce request will be enough to confirm the agreement and subsequently have every document ratified at court by both spouses, who do not necessarily have to appear at the same time or on the same day. Furthermore, it allows a reduction of costs when both spouses decide to be represented by the same attorney and to be defended by the same lawyer.

In an uncontested divorce the spouses can share the attorney and the lawyer. The costs of the proceedings can change and depend mainly on whether it is an uncontested divorce or not. It might be possible to apply for free legal assistance if you are unemployed.

The proceedings start with the presentation of the divorce request by both spouses together or by one spouse with the consent of the other, and a regulatory agreement signed by both (a document that gives the details for the custody of the children, visit schedules, payments for the maintenance and the use of the family residence, etc.).

This document has to be confirmed by both spouses.

According to the norms set out in the ICALPA (Law Society of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) the fees of the lawyers

come to 1.200 € (600 € each spouse). You will also need a letter of authorization for the attorney which can be granted by any notary and will cost between 30 and 40 €.

This document can also be granted by the court, called the power “apud acta”, and if this is the case it is free.

- Contested divorce When a couple has a disagreement about ending a marriage, i.e. one of the spouses does not want a separation; the other spouse might apply for a contested separation or divorce. In these cases, the costs of the proceedings will usually be higher (more than 1.200 €) and the time needed to obtain the judgment will be longer. Furthermore, this proceeding is a lot more complicated as it requires the carrying out of more procedures in order to secure an agreement between both parties; the holding of a judicial hearing and, obviously, you will need two lawyers and two attorneys.

The proceedings start with the presentation of the claim for divorce, enclosing the marriage certificate and when applicable birth certificates of the children; as well as every document that verifies the financial situation in order to adopt the necessary economic measures (tax reports, pay slips, bank certifications, property titles or certifications of registration).

Once the claim is presented and answered by the other spouse, the judge will call both in order to arrange a hearing where every party will have to appear with their lawyer and attorney. In the case of having children who are minors, the Attorney General will also be involved in the proceedings.

During the hearing arguments will be presented on each side in order for decisions to be made about the measures which will have to be adopted in relation to custody, the visiting schedule, use of the family residence, payments of maintenance, etc.

Once the hearing has taken place, the judge pronounces the statements that lead to the divorce of the spouses and establish the measures which will control the relationship between the spouses and the children, if any. The divorce will then be entered in the Registry of Family Status.

In summary, it would be definitely convenient to find a common solution with your spouse and get divorced by mutual agreement.

Dear Sir

Thank you very much for taking the time to write in to us. It is rare for us to get a letter from a member of the public so unabashedly singing the praises of a service provider or business with whom they have had successful dealings.

Good service!

Earlier this year I decided to buy a second hand car in the UK and import it to Gran Canaria to use here.

I had heard about the need to know all the Spanish import regulations and not being a Spanish speaker, I knew there would be difficulties for me without help.

I telephoned Phoenix International here in Gran Canaria and I briefly explained my wishes to import a car. The lady said she would return my call in 20 minutes. And she did! She gave me all the information I asked for, and more.

A couple of months later I telephoned again and the lady remembered my enquiry. I then visited the Phoenix International office and met the lady, Nicole Wessel, to finalise the details and costings.

Every detail was clearly explained to me. They would handle everything for me once the car was left at Felixstowe port in UK for shipment.

When this was done, it was just over 2 weeks later that a lorry arrived outside my bungalow here in Gran Canaria, and offloaded a small container. Then in true ĘťThunderbirdsĘź style, out from the container came my little car, safe a sound!

Of course there will be skeptics out there who have noticed that Pheonix are a regular advertiser in our publication and might suspect that your letter, and your satisfaction, are not genuine. I can assure any such reader that all of our letters are genuinely received here at The Canary News GCHQ and each one is seriously considered for its honesty and whether or not it serves a purpose to our wider readership.

Yours does so on several levels. Sadly in this day and age we too often hear about things going wrong and people not being happy with what they pay for, but sometimes we all forget that there are many people we deal with who do deserve the highest praise and it is too often overlooked.

I look forward to hearing more stories of good service and seeing if we can be of help to those who have not been so lucky.

Phoenix International had taken all the hassle of shipment and importation away from me.

Then after arranging the ITV (MOT) test were able to re-register the car onto Spanish plates for me.

Edward Timon Dear TCN, I have recently followed the ongoing articles and letters regarding customer service on the island, and one problem in particular seems to keep cropping up.

I have been surprised that your paper has remained so one-sided, favouring the suppliers over the consumer on more than one occasion. The fact is that things like internet provision on this island can be rather haphazard to say the least, but there have been some

providers who seem to be apperently more focused on taking peoples money, than they do on making sure that their customers are happy.

To my mind it makes little difference where the fault lies in a service I pay for, so long as the problem can be addressed and I am not left paying for something that has little or no use for me; if I as the client need to modify my behaviour, or how I use a service to get the best from it, I want to be informed of that before I sign a lengthy contract, similarly if the service offered is not suitable for what I want to use it for, I would hope that a professional company would clearly explain to me, after their expert assesment, what issues I might encounter, and indeed give me time to work out if their service is the right one for me.

It is a serious problem however if any company focuses primarily on getting a service contract signed and then somewhat abandons their customer should unforseen problems arise. This is how I feel I have been treated recently.

At the end of the day I am a reasonable person with the ability to comprehend a problem explained to me, but if I encounter a problem that I do not understand I fully expect a company that is benefitting from my regualr payment to them, to be more than willing to help me solve any issues I reasonably encounter with their service.

Anon. Puerto Rico Thank you for writing. Indeed customer service is an art too little employed. It must be understood that if a customer feels ignored, lied to, sneered at, dismissed out of hand or just simply told to go away, unfortuantely human nature often leads them to beleive that the company they are paying does not really care what the quality of their experince is going to be, and as such will be of little help if things go wrong.

Denial is no way to deal with any problem. All service providers must remember that they are paid to try to ensure that their customer gets a good deal.

If the customers are seen as the enemy, then they will quickly become so, and perhaps irretrievably. -Ed.

Driving in Gran Canaria

Buying or hiring a car is easy. Driving around without being road raged or receiving a fine is the tricky bit. This short guide has all the driving rules you didn’t know about and how to avoid the huge fines they hand out here.

Parking – basically you can’t park on a yellow line or if the pavement is yellow or on a main road. The last point may seem obvious but there are many small roads in the resorts that look perfectly safe places to park, if there aren’t parking bays I wouldn’t risk it. They will catch you and they will fine you. Fines can be from 50 to 200€ and paying them is a right pain.

Single white lines – If there is a single white line in the middle of the road you can’t cross it unless there is a parked car on the road. Don’t overtake. Don’t

cross to turn left and especially don’t do a u-turn. Cross it at your own peril.

I have been caught twice in 3 years, once the policeman was hiding behind a sign and the other time in a garage. Each time I received a €40 fine even though there was no traffic anywhere near.

Carry all your documents ALL the time.

The police can stop you anywhere and ask to see your paperwork. You need:

0. Driving license (you don’t need a Spanish one) 1. Permiso de circulación (Car certificate) 2. Insurance AND the last bank statement showing you have paid it. If you don’t have the bank statement you WILL get a fine.

3. ID (DNI or passport) 4. Road tax Plus:

5. Enough fluorescent bibs for each passenger - if you break down and don’t have enough bibs for everyone you might well get fined.

6. Warning Triangle Tunnels - You have to turn your lights on in tunnels and remove your sunglasses even if the tunnel looks like a bridge. It may not seem something that is worth worrying about but the fines are huge so try not to forget.

Mobile phones - you can only use

them if you have a hands-free unit that doesn’t touch your ears. Headphones and Bluetooth headsets are not allowed. This rule also applies to music and if you are caught using headphones while driving you’ll be fined about 200€ and get points on your license.

Other random rules which our website readers have told us about include, the passenger putting their feet on the dashboard, driving barefoot or with flip flops and driving with their arm hanging out the window. Each time they have been stopped and had a stern talking to.

In general, driving here is fine, as with anywhere if you respect the rules you’ll be OK. Just remember to keep your documents in order and smile sweetly at the police officer when they pull you over.

Greece Slides as Pound Strengthens Greece has continued to be the word (is this a throwback to the 70s?) although if they had a choice I am sure they would like to go back in time.

The question on everybody’s lips has been will Greece default? The news out of Greece is that they will do everything they possibly can to avoid default and with recent data we see that unfortunately Greece will miss it’s target for the Budget deficit this year although in fairness it will reduce from the start of 2011 and probably end up around 8.5%.

The very fact that they will miss however has somewhat spooked Eurozone ministers who have delayed their decision on when to provide the next chunk of money that was originally due mid October. The ministers had expected to sign of on the release on the 13th October but that meeting has now been cancelled so don’t expect Greece to receive any funds until November. Now here’s the dilemma will Greece be able to afford to pay its public sector workers and some of its loans that are due.

Biofuel Flight to The Canaries Platinum Fuels have been chosen as the fuel handler to fuel the aircraft.

Aviation Minister Theresa Villiers said: “I very much welcome Thomson Airways’ announcement and wish them well with this project. The Government believes that sustainable biofuels have a role to play in efforts to tackle climate change, particularly in sectors where no other viable low carbon energy source has been identified – as is the case with aviation.

Thomson Airways, TUI’s flight division, have announced that following the initial delay to their biofuel operations, back in July, they have now made aviation history by becoming the first UK airline to fly customers using sustainable aviation biofuel. The maiden flight, TOM 7446, flew from Birmingham to Arrecife, and daily flights will follow from Birmingham starting early next year for around four weeks.

The biofuel is produced from used cooking oil, and has been rigorously tested to meet strict aviation safety standards. The selected flights will operate one engine using sustainable aviation biofuel and one engine using standard fuel – which will allow them to collect valuable performance data.

Prior to the flights departure, Thomson Airways wrote to all their customers, crew and passengers due to take part in this historic flight – and they were invited to a champagne reception before boarding.

Sustainably, say Thomson Airways, is one of their top priorities. So, this is an exciting initiative not just for Thomson Airways, but for Thomson as a whole. It offers Thomson Airways the opportunity to improve their environmental performance and at the same time, set

the benchmark for green aviation in this country.

Thomson carried 232 passengers on a Boeing 757-200 for the four hour flight.

The airline already operates one of the highest load factors in the UK industry and therefore makes the most efficient use of its fleet and of the airport slots made available to it. It operates with an emission rate of 75g CO2 per passenger kilometre flown, significantly lower than average emission rates for both low cost and full service scheduled carriers.

Chris Browne, Thomson Airways Managing Director, said: “This is a very exciting day for Thomson Airways and a further step in our commitment to invest in sustainable aviation biofuel.

We firmly believe the adoption of sustainable biofuels by airlines will help achieve the Government’s carbon budget which commits the UK to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2025. Most strikingly, sustainable biofuel has the potential to reduce aviation emissions by up to 80% in the long term.”

The sustainable biofuel used by Thomson Airways is supplied by Dutch-based company SkyNRG, who is advised by an independent Sustainability Board consisting of two leading NGOs and a leading Government scientific institute.

“We want aviation to flourish and grow but we have also been clear that the environmental impacts of flying must be addressed. I welcome the efforts being made by the UK aviation and aerospace industries to drive forward the technological change we need to tackle this challenge effectively.”

Following the first UK commercial sustainable biofuels flight, there will then be a short gap before the daily operations start from early 2012 for approximately one month. Birmingham Airport is supporting the sustainable biofuel operation through the provision of a dedicated fuel truck, independent technical oversight and storage infrastructure. As sustainable biofuels become more commercially viable, Thomson Airways plans to expand its use of sustainable biofuels across its fleet.

Fuelling discussion

Earlier this week Iberia became the first Spanish airline to use biofuels in its fleet.

Several charities and environmental campaigners have questioned the green credentials of aviation biofuel many claiming that it does little to help the envirnoment and in fact can often exasperate environmental problems as well as causing further encroachment on rainforest and negatively impacting the poorest in society by the knock-effects which can cause food prices to rise

significantly due to land being cultivated for the high profit biofuel industry, in fact causing a negative impact on the most vulnerable. It has also been suggested that biofuel could eventually contribute to rises in aviation costs which would certainly affect ticket pricing.

Regardless of all of these complications it is heartening to know that a company like TUI at the forefront of the aviation and tourist industry are also leading the way in trying to find solutions and develop new ways to approach the problems associated with aviation.

We here in The Canary Islands are proud to be involved in these first steps towards more sustainable travel.

MASDANZA!

Maspalomas is very shortly going to be overrun with dance talent, not only from here in The Canaries, but from all over the world. Masdanza is an international contemporary dance contest of increasing importance, which takes place in San Fernando de Maspalomas. Dancers are coming from as far away as Japan to perform here on our beautiful island. We are privileged to be able to play host to teams from all over Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia and Taiwan will be represented at Masdanza for the first time this year.

Masdanza continues to grow in importance on the international dance scene, attended by talent scouts, producers and journalists from all over the world. Providing a show case for fresh talent, its reputation for the avantgarde is turning it into an important reference point.

Dance is probably the most widely favoured form of artistic expression in the Canary Islands, and while so many British kids are hidden away in their bedrooms practising scales on the violin, many little Canarians are out in the street practising their new dance moves.

Natalia Medina used to be one of those little dancers, born and bred in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. She began her training here on the island, and went on to complete her dance education abroad, travelling to Barcelona, London and New York, as well as spending time in Holland and Germany. Sixteen years ago, having returned to the island, she decided it was time to give something back to the community she came from. The original idea was fairly simple – a contemporary dance competition for local dancers. She got in touch with her local Ayuntamiento, who agreed to support the project, and thus ‘Masdanza’ was born.

Since that first competition, Masdanza has gone from strength to strength, growing first into a national competition in just its second year, before becoming truly international in its sixth year, a showcase of new talent in the world of contemporary dance.

Because of the way the competition has developed, participants are granted full freedom of expression, fostering innovation and originality which is so often quashed by financial concerns. On which subject, Masdanza is working in conjunction with Casa Africa to facilitate the application and participation of African choreographers and dancers, offering financial support and assistance with visa applications etc. This year we will see contestants from Tunisia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, chosen from amongst 36 applications from Africa.

Although the contemporary dance competition forms the heart of Masdanza, a break dance championship has been added in more recent years. This new element has been received with great enthusiasm, especially amongst younger members of society.

Masdanza, now a full blown festival of dance, begins on Saturday the 15th of October with a ‘dance marathon’, a series of ten dance classes, each offering a different style, that begins at 11am and goes on until 9pm. It might be a little ambitious to try to participate in all ten classes, but anyone can go along and at least try one or two. The contemporary dance contest is divided into two sections; the solo contest, and the choreography contest.

Of the 220 applications received, only twenty have been selected to participate in Masdanza. The 11 solo acts and 9 choreographed groups will perform their pieces from Monday to Wednesday, with the solo final taking place on Thursday, and the Group final on Friday.

Saturday the 22nd will be the busiest day of the festival, as ‘Breaking Masdanza’ begins at 11am, lasting all day – if you want to see the entire break dancing competition it would be wise to take a cushion, as the benches are hard, and the competition lasts all day.

The winner’s gala starts at 8:30, and prizes are presented at the end. Be sure to attend the performances during the week, as there are special prizes for the audience’s favourite soloist and choreographed group.

Although the actual contest will end on Saturday the 22nd, the participants will remain in the Canary Islands for another week, giving performances throughout the archipelago. As events such as this rarely take place outside the largest cities, Masdanza wants to make sure that as many people as possible, locals and tourists alike, are able to attend performances.

Natalia Medina, wishing to make contemporary dance accessible to a younger audience, has also introduced ‘cultural breaks’ in local schools. Fifteen minute performances will take place in several local schools during Masdanza week, giving pupils a taste of what can be done, and encouraging young dancers to persist. Natalia is aware of the difficulties facing young dancers living in the Canary Islands, having been one herself, and hopes to foster more interest in the discipline, not only socially, but also politically. Many young dancers currently find it necessary to leave the islands to properly develop their talents, but Natalia believes that provision should be made within the archipelago, facilitating not only training, but also the production of artistic projects.

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

How Big is Your Gnome?

I have to confess that I am not a great lover of gnomes. No, I don’t mean the real ones that appear in fairytales, but the depraved garden variety. Toadstools, seagulls, fairies and wishing wells I can take quite happily, but the grinning garden gnome, wearing that totally impractical, ostentatious and irritating red hat really makes me see red (if you excuse the pun). A garden is meant to be a thing of beauty, an extension and reflection of our own personalities; so why is it that some people fill their gardens with these malevolent, desperate looking creatures?

way. Maybe it was some horrific tale that I read in childhood - after all, some fairy tales actually are not at all fit for children (the authors are not called the Brothers Grimm for nothing!). Maybe they remind me of a much-detested Sunday School teacher from my early years or, as I have long suspected, the uncanny likeness between them and the much disliked Great Uncle Gilbert.

Many people think that garden gnomes are quite innocent, sitting quietly with their fishing rods dunked into a sea of concrete that will never catch any fish. Do they really think that they are sitting on a toadstool for their benefit? No, they are planning their next attempt to undermine the human race. Besides, most gnomes are far too plump and well fed for any self-respecting toadstool to survive under their weight.

I used to think that gnomes were a ‘Brit thing’ and I recall many quite attractive gardens in the UK ruined by rows of these miserable creations. I recall another uncle who had dozens of things, which he brought into the garage each winter and spent his spare time repainting them ready for the next season. As a child, I always had the desperate urge to pull the communication chord on a fast moving train. Similarly, I also had the desire to blow the heads off as many of these evil creatures that I could find in Uncle’s garage. No, don’t worry, I never did either, but I wish I had.

As I walked my dog Bella past the garden gate, we stopped as usual to peer inside at the latest development. Horror upon horrors! As I peered over the gate, the gaze of another being met my eye. The evil gaze that met me was from the largest and most malevolent looking creation that I have seen for some time. It was the tallest, plumpest gnome that I have ever seen! He grinned and, I thought, winked at me. Bella growled menacingly and I walked smartly on. Bella seemed relieved to get away too.

So there we have it. Our early nightmares come back to haunt us in later life, it seems, wherever we are. Mine lives just a few doors away and is a constant reminder of the nightmares of childhood.

more so in the Canary Islands. Don’t believe a word of it. Today, I walked past a neighbour’s house - they are a nice old couple who spend a lot of time developing their small garden. It has moved on from being a stony desert left by the builders into a thing of beauty, a delight on the eye and full of colour for most of the year.

Neither is there a prickly cactus in sight, which is remarkable - given where we live.

We also have other neighbours, well known artists, who have a passion for drawing, painting and designing naked gnomes. The first time that I saw them I was rather taken aback, but at least they had hung up those silly red hats.

As with humans, it is rather hard to look intimidating without wearing a shred of clothing. Apparently the pictures sell rather well in a specialist market and I was given a free sample, but that is a story for another time. © Barrie Mahoney

“It´s too good to be true” – es demasiado bueno para ser verdad

Sayings and useful expressions: part two Again, we´ll start with those that are similar to English, though it´s those tiny differences in how we express ourselves that are so charming. For example, instead of saying “it´s a small world”, the Spanish say that it’s a scarf: el mundo es un pañuelo. Similarly, “to beat about the bush” is ir por las ramas, (to go through the branches), while “let´s get to the point!” would be ¡vamos al grano! (let´s go to the grain). Your soulmate can be translated as your ‘alma gémela’ (twin soul), though the Spanish more commonly refer to finding their media naranja (other half of the orange). And while we might tell a ‘white lie’ to save someone´s feelings, this translates as una mentira piadosa (a merciful lie) in castellano.

Easily confused!

Slang words are probably best avoided unless you’re confident about the pronunciation or you could be saying the opposite of what you mean. For example, es cojonudo/a means that something or someone is fabulous (we might say it´s the bee’s knees, or bloody brilliant). An easier alternative would be to describe the person or thing as super-bueno or buenísimo.

However, estar acojonado (or acojonada for a woman) expresses a temporary state, and means to be really scared. A simpler alternative is to say “I have fear”: tengo miedo.

Here are some of the most popular mixed language phrases:

• El Naife es el cuchillo canario (knife);

Aquí están algunas de las frases más populares del lenguaje mixto : The Cambullón was a person who traded on the docks in the postwar years, and is said to, as soon as seeing a cargo ship arriving near the pier, have jumped into the water screaming in Spanglish “can buy one?” Professor Juan Martinez Torvisco from La Laguna University, tells us the origins of the term in the port of Tenerife. “British ships disembarking there were allowed to sell certain products brought for that purpose. The English ships invited buyers to board the ship and exchange goods, by saying, ‘You Can buy on’, or shouting ‘Come, buy on’”.

These buyers were “cambulloneros” renowned for their devotion to fiddling and double dealing.

El Cambullón era la persona que comerciaban en los muelles en los años de la postguerra, y se dice que al ver llegar un barco de mercancías acercarse por el muelle, se tiraban al agua gritando en Spanglish “can buy one”. Otros como el profesor Juan Martínez Torvisco de La Laguna, nos dice que, el origen del terminacho está en el puerto de Tenerife.

Los barcos ingleses que allí recalaban permitían la comercialización de algunos productos que traían al efecto.

Los barcos ingleses invitaban a subir al barco y realizar el trueque de mercancías diciendo: “you can buy on”. o gritando “ “Come, buy on”(= puede usted comprar a bordo), fuera del arancel. Esos compradores eran los “cambulloneros” que luego se dedicaban a trapichear con esas gangas.

• Queque is a large homemade cake.

• Queque es un bizcocho casero de mayor tamaña (cake).

• Ticket is an entry ticket or receipt.

• Tique es un billete, entrada (ticket).

• Trinque means drinking (drink) “to like a drink” subsequently gave their name to the three types of potatoes known here as: The Quinegua (or Chinegua), the Rambana and the Cara potatoes. These directly correspond to their original English names of “King Edward”, “Arran Banner” and “White Care”.

Las papas y la palabra que las designa ya habían llegado a Canarias desde el continente americano poco después de la conquista de america, pero fueron los tubérculos importados desde Inglaterra posteriormente los que dieron nombre a los tres tipos de papas más conocidos: la papa Quinegua o para algunos Chinegua, la papa Cara y la papa Rambana.

Estos tres nombres corresponden a las denominaciones inglesas que aparecián escritas en sus cajas como “King Eduard potato” , “White Care potato” y “Arran Baner potato”.

• El Choni es el sinónimo de extranjero, y nace de la palabra “ Johny” porque así se comenzaron a llamar a los primeros comerciantes y funcionarios ingleses que se instalaron en canarias en el siglo XIX. • Choni is synonymous with foreign, and born from the word “Johnny” because that was the way to call the first English traders and officials in the Canary Islands who settled in the nineteenth century.

• Flis is a bug and is used for bug spray.

• Flis es un insecticidad.

• Fos is an expression of disgust when smelling something bad. It could come from the English word Faugh, because the British also used to express disgust with a similar word (faugh!).

• Fos es un expresión de asco, cuando huele mal. Podría provenir de la palabra faugh, que los ingleses también usan para expresar asco (faugh!).

• Fonil is the funnel (funnel). It can also derives from Portuguese (Funil).

• Fonil es el embudo (funnel). También puede derivar del portugués (funil).

• A Guanijei, guanijai is a cup of booze, and comes from whiskey or give me One Haig- John Haig.

• Un Guanijei, guanijai es una copa de alcohol, y nace del güisqui John Haig o dame One Haig.

• Naif is the canary word for knife.

• Trinque significa beber (drink): “le gusta el trinque”; • Piche means asphalt, tar and comes from the word: pitch.

• Piche significa asfalto, chapapote (pitch).

And finally our beloved word “Guagua” or bus, is actually an American Anglicism that comes from Cuba. A phonetic translation of the word “waggon”(wagon) or “uagon.

Y por último nuestra querida palabra “Guagua” o Autobús, es en realidad un anglicismo americano que proviene de Cuba. Una traslación fonética de la palabra waggon (furgón) ó uagon.

In 1910 Las Canteras beach was little frequented by bathers due to the disapproving morals of the time, so if one visited the beach it was only for a stroll. By the 20s a mass attraction to swimming had begun, a custom brought here from Cuba by many of the Canarians who were returning after having migrated there some years earlier, including my own father. On this Caribbean island, swimwear and morality was a little more relaxed, and this is how swimming and the use of modern bathing suits, showing that little bit more flesh, made this beach a popular destination for young canarians of the time.

Por la década de 1910, la playa da las canteras era poco frecuentada por los bañistas debido a la moral de la época que veían mal el baño, así que la mayoría de los visitantes iban a pasear solamente, ya unos años mas tardes por allá por los años 20 empezó a llamar poderosamente la atención a los canarios la natación, costumbre traída desde Cuba por muchos de los Canarios que regresaban después de haber emigrado allí durante un tiempo entre ellos mi papá. En esta isla caribeña la moda de baño y la moral era un poco mas relajada ,y así fue como la natación y el uso del traje de baño mas moderno y que enseñaba un poco mas de lo habitual en las mujeres hizo que esta playa un destino popular para los jóvenes canarios de la época.

On it´s inauguration in 1890 this theater was originally named Tirso de Molina but after the great success 11 years later of the opening of Galdos’s Play ‘Electra’ the theatre was renamed in his honor

In the 30s Las Palmas de Gran Canaria became one of the favorite places to escape European winter, visited annually by some 3,000 tourists mostly from Britain, many of the hotels where they stayed were in the area of the Las Canteras beach which by then many people were drawn to on a regular basis.

The British were the first to bring tourism to Las Canteras. They came to the island initially to work in businesses on the Puerto de la Luz, but many eventually settled in the city, where they created a large colony that came to extend many of its customs among the residents of the islands.

If we walk through the old town of Las Palmas we will see the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Ana, in front of which in the square the famous dogs guarding it.

It is worth remembering that Gran Canaria was named after the abundant dogs on the island when the Spanish conquistadors arrived and that these statues pay tribute to those dogs. Of course it was the Romans who first named the Canarii people, who worshipped these dogs.

Si paseamos por el casco antiguo de las Palmas veremos la hermosa Catedral de Santa Ana, en su plaza encontraremos perros que la guardan hay que recordar que Gran Canaria recibió su nombre por los perros que abundaban en la isla cuando llegaron los conquistadores españoles así que de esta manera se les rinde homenaje a esos perros con este monumento.

Por supuesto que fueron los Romanos quienes primero nombrado a las personas Canarii, que adoraba a estos perros.

You will need Bananas (1 per person Canarian bananas are tastiest) Eggs (1 per person) 1 cup white rice (normally 1 cup feeds 2 generous portions) Sofrito (tomatos, onion and garlic) or tomato sauce Sausages (optional) A little salt and Olive oil Arroz a la Cubana

Boil the rice, usually for every cup of rice are 2 cups of water add a little oil and salt to taste, seperatly fry the whole bananas, eggs and sausage Once the rice is cooked serve with everything else, you can add tomato sauce to taste, for those who want to make your own “sofrito” chop tomatoes, garlic and onion finely and fry gently with a bit of olive oil and serve Because it is so easy to prepare many people have their own way to combine different ingredients some might have ground beef instead of sausages or even without any meat for vegetarians, you might also like to accompany it with avocados or anything else that you can think of, this is the basic idea.

The festival, which will be held on Saturday 12th November from 5 pm until 3 am, changed its format and will be known in this its 17th year as Fiesta Womad 2011.

The 2011 edition of Womad Las Palmas will be reduced to a single day because of the crisis that has seen its budget cut from 700,000 euros, provided by the previous socialist government, to 250,000.

Minerals appear in many different forms. In order for us to process minerals they must be bound to something – oxides, sulphates, carbonates and citrates – typically referred to as “the salt form” of the mineral.

What Melts Your Heart?

My good friend Gisela is known as a bit of a tough cookie - an iron lady who has no problem in calling a spade a spade. Recently, when talking about things that really move us, things that so affect us emotionally that we cannot control our feelings and which leave us in little puddles on the floor, she related the following moving story to me.

On her way to work by tube train, she sometimes met groups of severely disabled youngsters.

They played happily together, laughing at the simplest things, and a joy to behold, even though many were in wheelchairs, sometimes without limbs, deaf and dumb, paralysed, and with many with other disabilities. Deliberately choosing to travel in the same compartment as the young people, Gisela discovered they were on their way to hospital workshops where they learned to adjust to their disabilities and integrate into the community.

Before boarding, Gisela was often in a sour mood or annoyed at something that had happened at home/work, but as she travelled she felt an inner peace and always thought, “How stupid of me to be angry at trifling things when these dear children have such enormous problems”. She felt ashamed of herself for getting so worked up about trivial, insignificant things and gradually learned to be thankful for the many blessings which filled her life. Her heart was melted!

They’re barely getting by as it is”.

I need not have worried. In one week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his little finger, and my regulars had adopted him as their official mascot!

Later Fran walked into my office. She had a couple of paper napkins in her hand and a funny look on her face.

“What’s up?” I asked. “This was tucked under a saucer,” she answered, handing me a napkin. Three £20 notes fell out. On the outside, in big bold letters, was printed,

“When two others customers heard the news they gave me this”. She handed me another serviette that had ‘Something for Stevie’ scrawled on the outside. Two £50 notes were tucked within its folds. Fran blinked at me and we both swallowed hard.

He couldn’t stop grinning as he headed straight for his apron and trolley. “Whoa Stevie,” I said. “Work can wait a minute. To celebrate your return, breakfast is on me!” and led him towards a big table.

My cafe was a gloomy place when, for the first morning in three years, Stevie missed work. He was in hospital undergoing heart surgery. We prayed his doctors were right when they said he would come through the op and be back at work in a few months.

Glancing back I saw all the staff - plus table after table of beaming diners - joining the procession. We stopped at the table, covered with crockery, sitting on dozens of folded paper napkins.

“First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess,” I said, trying to sound stern.

Stevie stared at me. He picked up a napkin. It had ‘Something for Stevie’ printed on the outside. Two £10 notes fell out. He gaped at the money - then at all the serviettes sticking out from under the crockery, each with his name scrawled on it. I turned to his mother.

“There’s more than £10,000 in cash and cheques on this table, all from diners, truckers and their companies who heard your story”, I smiled.

And guess what? While we were all busy stamping and clapping, Stevie, with his usual beatific smile and attention to duty was back on the job, busy clearing away and wiping down the table.

Both Gisela and Stevie’s stories teach us lessons we ought never to forget, don’t they? True compassion is sure to melt the hardest heart … and if these stories don’t light your fire, examine yourself … maybe your wood’s wet!

Where the Mind Leads... ...the Qi follows It’s a curious title for this edition’s article, I hear you say. It’s actually a description of a very old principal found in Chinese therapeutic exercise, or Qigong as it is popularly known. This principal although it is often related to the practice of Qigong, it actually holds true for everything in our daily lives.

To explain this further I would like to talk about a lady I know here in London who has multiple sclerosis. I work with this lady three times a week and have been helping her for the past two years to overcome a variety of symptoms including numbness in her hands and feet, involuntary muscle spasms, heaviness in the limbs, a tendency to fall over her own feet and general mobility issues. When I first met her she used to fall over quite frequently and was very often covered in bruises.

This particular lady is very inspirational to me as she never moans or complains about herself, she lives a very busy married life with three children and a house to keep, and yet she always has a smile on her face. She is a scientist, and yet has a very genuine Christian faith which is in no way in conflict with her scientific training and curiosity. The first thing we needed to address when we first met was learning how to walk again from scratch, and slowly but surely learning how to remain in balance on the leg she was standing on while setting the other foot forward in such a way as would not pull her off of her centre of balance.

It’s an ongoing process, relearning how to do the “simplest” of things, like walking up and down the stairs whilst remaining centred, comfortable and confident. She is a realist and therefore will tear apart any point of view about her condition which doesn’t make any

sense practically for her, so when I first began to speak to her about the words she spoke to herself, and to others about herself and her condition, to discover how unconsciously negative and self limiting her dialogue was, she was initially very challenged and slightly uncomfortable at the thought that her inner dialogue may not have been helpful, but rather served to perpetuate the idea that there was nothing she could do to heal herself.

Very often when a person is given a diagnosis of conditions like MS the person somehow then surrenders and believes that from that point on they are suddenly on a downward slope towards further degeneration of the physical body. Now, in this case if that persons mind fixates on such a negative idea then the body will follow... Where the Mind Leads The Qi Follows.

Alternatively this principal works universally for example: the woman I mentioned above has been actively, joyfully and with great humour been engaging in developing and inner dialogue with herself which has one single purpose at its core, and that is to liberate herself from any belief which doesn’t help her to heal herself. She has been and continues to apply on a daily basis all of the principals which I have been describing in these articles... and it is an ongoing process, with each new day bringing with it its own challenges.

Perseverance, Constancy, SelfDetermination, Humour, Vigilance and a Joyful Heart can renew every part of one’s self, in the mind, the emotions and the physical body. The lady mentioned above is, in spite of the prognosis, getting stronger in her hands, fingers and wrists, she can walk up and down stairs with a smile on her face whilst remaining absolutely in balance and can move from A to B steadily, no longer tripping over her own feet... much to the astonishment of her consultants at the hospital.

She is becoming more and more fascinated by the process of eradicating negative thinking, whilst developing a dialogue with her body which is both thankful and kind... and this is the key which sets her free.

I personally find her a great inspiration, and her story is well worth passing on to the readers of The Canary News because we all have the capacity to heal ourselves... what a lovely thought!

Less than two weeks after announcing they would perform, the chart-toppers said they could no longer take part due to “unavoidable circumstances”.

The US group was one of the biggest names on the bill for The Michael Forever Tribute Concert at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Christina Aguilera, Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson are still taking part, while Beyonce will appear in a video performance.

David Cassidy Sues Sony David Cassidy sues Sony over Partridge Family royalties The show turned Cassidy into a 70s heartthrob for all them that can remember cassidy US singer David Cassidy has sued Sony, claiming he has not been paid royalties for sales of Partridge Family merchandise which bear his image.

The 70s TV show made Cassidy, 61, an international star.

A string of spin-off merchandise included lunchboxes, magazines and board games.

Cassidy told broadcaster CNN that Sony had breached his 1971 contract which gave him 15% of sales. He is demanding “in excess of millions of dollars”.

Sony has not commented on his claims.

Cassidy’s legal action, which was filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday, claims Sony Pictures Entertainment and its co-defendants Screen Gems and CPT Holdings “have swindled Mr Cassidy out of his rightful share of the profits from

His lawyers claim that, during the show’s run between 197074, Cassidy received an average of 30,000 letters from fans per week. They say his contract guaranteed 15% percent of net merchandising profits which bore his image while the show was on air.

It adds that merchandising has since generated “nearly $500m” (£323m).

Cassidy told CNN that his former manager told him he has only been paid about $5,000 (£3,228) for merchandise.

The legal action claims Sony has failed to provide Cassidy with financial statements for merchandising, or has “provided such accountings and reports only begrudgingly, inconsistently, inaccurately and fraudulently”.

Speaking to CNN, Cassidy said: “It’s just a matter of

Ocean Earth Confital Pro 2011

The biggest surf contest on the island comes to town bringing with it some of the best surfers to challenge local experts in perfect Confital waves... an epic spectacle, it certainly was!

occasions was pretty thrilling, leading the guys in the commentary booth to nickname him “Jona-TEN Gonzalez”!

Testimony to the great waves and fair judging system (the guys in the tower did a fantastic job), the two duly met in the final of the event. In front of a rapturous and vocal Canarian crowd, the two surfers exchanged blows in a wave for wave confrontation.

The setting was the beautiful Confital bay on the North east side of Las Palmas.

Don’t be mislead by its city address, this place is quiet and mystical and hosts - in the right conditions - one of the best right handers (a wave that breaks from left to right)in the whole of Europe.

It was as if the Ocean Earth organisers had booked the waves; we received the first pulse from a far-away storm right on the first day of the waiting period (there is a buffer of several days to run the contest so the organizers have the choice of the days with the best waves). The first waves started to show on the rising tide, sending a flurry of activity and by 4pm the contest + webcast + music + rock concert atmosphere was on...

Looking on the positive, the waves really were on our side with epic conditions and it gave local surfers a real opportunity to challenge these travelling pros and to post a real “local talent Vs. travelling

pro” contest with local guys waging war against surfers as far away as Australia, Tahiti and Reunion Island.

The event was completed over 4 days of fantastic surf, where on some days we saw waves bigger than the competitors opening out into cavernous barrels allowing the surfers to get very valuable “tube-time” inside the wave, spectacular and highly awarded by the judges.

As each round went by, the quality of surfing got higher and higher and as we reached the finals, it seemed to be destiny written that the surfer from Reunion Island, Adrien Toyon, would meet with Canarian (from Tenerife) Jonathan Gonzalez. Both of these surfers were repeatedly scoring the best waves and best combined heat totals throughout the contest and were definitely the in-form surfers of the event. Statistically, it would be fate to see these two in the finals.

Jonathan was in particularly terrifying form. In the round of 16 and in the semi finals, he scored a perfect ten. This is where the judges deem the wave to have been surfed “perfectly” and cannot award a higher score. It is pretty rare to see tens dropped in professional surf contests so to see the local lad do this on TWO

Jonathan was clearly elated after his win: “It’s been a long time since I last won an event, it was two years ago here as well so it’s great to win once again at home. For a 2-Star event the level has been amazing from the beginning and we saw some experienced surfers loose in the first Round. I’m really stoked that the wave was that good until the end, it got glassier again and the sun even came out this afternoon so the conditions have been just perfect.”

He went on to praise the organization of the event: “...Organizer Federico Garcia has worked a lot for the Canary Islands, and in this time of financial crisis it’s becoming very hard to make an event like this.”

Adrien Toyon was gracious in defeat: “This is definitely one of the best events in Europe, it should have more stars to it but I’m super stoked of going that far and I’m happy for Jonathan (Gonzalez) as well he’s at home! Last time I beat him on my home spot of Papara in Tahiti, it’s how competition goes. He knows the wave really well and surfs amazing, he’s one of my favorite surfers to watch.”

Drick mycket, men drick rätt! Även om man inte möts av tropisk värme är det ändå en ganska stor omställning för en frusen nordbo att komma ner till soliga Gran Canaria.

Det blir soligt, det blir varmt, det blir skönt. Men det blir också svettigt och kanske lite pressande.

Då är det viktigt att kompensera den vätskeförlust som svettningen innebär.

Att svettas är kanske inte alltid så behagligt, men det är en i allra högsta grad önskvärd, ja rent av livsnödvändig företeelse.

Om vi inte kunde svettas skulle kroppstemperaturen i t ex Gran Canarias klimat snabbt stiga till rent av livshotande nivåer.

Att svettas är livsnödvändigt!

Först av allt, vad händer när man svettas? Svettningen innebär en vätskeförlust som i extrema fall kan uppgå till flera liter på bara några timmar. Den vätska som avgår tas från olika vävnader i kroppen, bl a från blodet. Minskad blodvolym innebär omgående nedsatt prestationsförmåga. Försämringen går snabbt om man inte ersätter den förlorade vätskan. Redan vid en vätskeförlust på 2 % av kroppsvikten har prestationsförmågan minskat med 20 %! Vid en förlust på 4 % av kroppsvikten är prestationsförmågan bara 50 % av den normala. Och hur skoj är det att gå på ”halvfart” under semestern? En förklaring till nedgången är att blodvolymen är nedsatt, samtidigt som hudens blodkärl är vidöppna vilket egentligen skulle kräva en större blodvolym än vanligt. Om inte vätska tillförs kan kroppen råka ut för överhettning.

Symptomen är minskad svettning, varm och torr hud, sviktande omdöme och till sist medvetslöshet.

Störst risk löper personer som är dåligt tränade, överviktiga eller lider av någon hjärtsjukdom. När man ska ersätta vätskeförlusten är det viktigt att ha i minnet att törst inte är något bra mått på vätskebalansen. Bland

maratonlöpare är det ett väl känt faktum att när det gått så långt att man är törstig, då är det för sent.

Då har man så stor vätskeförlust att det inte går att kompensera med mindre än att man avbryter aktiviteten, (slutar springa) och tillför vätska. Av den anledningen dricker maratonlöpare ofta, minst var femte kilometer, i varmt väder ännu oftare. Vi har alltså mycket att lära av just maratonlöpare. En kontinuerlig tillförsel av vätska, små mängder men ofta, är idealet.

Det viktiga saltet.

En vanlig och mycket utbredd missuppfattning är att vi förlorar salt genom svettningen. I själva verket är det precis tvärt om! Visserligen smakar och innehåller svetten salt, bl a natrium, kalium och magnesium, men bara till 0.3 %. Blodets och övriga vävnadsvätskors salthalt är betydligt högre, närmare 1 %. När vi svettas så innebär det faktiskt att salthalten i kroppen stiger. Det är när vi ersätter förlusten och späder ut kroppsvätskorna, som salthalten sjunker. Om man enbart fyller på med vätska som inte innehåller de nödvändiga salterna råkar man så småningom ut för saltbrist. Symptom på detta är bl a kramper.

Sportdryck – en bra lösning!

Nu är det väl knappast troligt att Du kommit till Gran Canaria för att springa maraton. Men Du måste ändå räkna med att kompensera för vätskeförlust med uppemot tre liter, kanske mera, per dag. Att täcka vätskeförlusten med enbart vanligt vatten, eller öl, är ingen bra lösning, med tanke på det vi nämnt, saltbehovet. Som tur är finns det idag en enkel och bekväm lösning på problemet. Lösningen heter sportdryck. De flesta moderna sportdrycker har idag en väl utprovad och dokumenterad sammansättning som är en kombination av vätska, mineraler och salter. Det är en bra och lättillgänglig lösning då sportdryck finns i de allra flesta matvarubutiker, även på Gran Canaria. Drick mycket mineralvatten och kombinera med

en klunk sportdryck då och då under dagen. Gör så och Du undviker obehaglig salt- eller vätskebrist.

ICCM I Melenara ligger ett centrum för marina studier – Instituto Canario de Ciencias Marinas, ICCM. Det har funnits i ca 30 år. Från början en liten forskningsverksamhet; ett bibliotek och satsning på rehabilitering av skadade sköldpaddor. Den 21 september återinvigdes det moderna institutet. EU bidrar med 60 procent av de pengar som krävs för verksamheten. Institutet behandlar alla marina frågor och dess forskningsresultat är offentliga.

Så beroende på tillämpning kan privata företag utnyttja studieresultatet för så skilda ämnen som utvinning av energi ur havet, och förutsättningar för odling av tonfisk. Ett behov som har accentuerats över åren. Arbetet bedrivs i nära samarbete med avdelningen för marinvetenskap på universitetet i Las Palmas, ett av de fem som finns i Spanien, med motsvarande inriktning.

I sammanhanget kan nämnas att Gran Canaria har 3 privata företag inom fiskodling. Det är framför allt brax, abborre och piggvar som odlas.

Vulkanutbrott på El Hierro?

Naturligtvis följer vi fortlöpande händelseutvecklingen från ön El Hierro. Sannolikheten för ett utbrott har avtagit och den bedöms för närvarande till endast 10 procent. Skolorna hålls öppna och myndigheterna manar till lugn. Men vaksamheten är hög och såväl militära enheter som Röda Korset deltar i förberedelserna för en eventuell evakuering och har en omfattande katastrofberedskap på plats.
