Fusion 4th Birthday Air Tour of Spain
Fusion Restaurant celebrated its 4th birthday on Saturday the 4th June literally with a bang. David, the impresario behind Fusion, ensured a great atmosphere at the party by using the cult move “Good Morning Vietnam” as the theme for the night. The Restaurant was decked out for the occasion with sandbags, bamboo and camouflage netting arranged at the front door and around the restaurant.
Fusion Restaurant in Arguineguin specialises in South-East Asian food, mixed with flavours with European ingredients. This special mix of flavours from the orient gives the diner a unique taste experience.
Many friends entered into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in khaki uniforms of British and American design, which complemented others dressed up as Buddhist Monks, and ladies of the night in Chinese silk and conical straw hats. As well as the 70’s music we were treated to live music from Jason Burrows singing the songs of Boy George. Jason is normally to be found in Puerto Rico’s Funny Boy’s bar. Everyone joined in the singing and dancing in the restaurant, on the pavement outside and even on the wide window ledges, making an electric atmosphere.
We were then treated to a beautiful buffet of Mini Asian Burgers, Chinese 5 spice infused roast pork, Asian glazed roast beef and Thai-style cous cous salad among other delicious nibbles. David then thanked everyone for making this a special night, and everyone partied well into the small hours to make this a party to remember.
From the 11th to 17th of July, aviation enthusiasts have been celebrating the XLV Air Tour of Spain and XXVIII Majesty the King Trophy, organized by the Royal Aero Club of Spain. For this edition of the Tour they decided to visit the Canary Islands.

On the 14th [as we go to press], they flew stage 3 covering Gran CanariaLa Gomera-Tenerife-Gran Canaria. On Friday 15th they are enjoying a period of rest in Gran Canaria, then the 16 planes participating will move to Lanzarote. On the 17th they will stage the 4th leg from Lanzarote Agadir-Casablanca-Jerez, from where they will return to the finish point. The 18th will see the pilots of the aircraft disperse back to their bases. In this race-like Tour of Spain the pilots demonstrate their ability to maintain regularity and precision during the competitive stages, as well

as strengthen relationships between members of the large family of aviators in this part of the world. During each stage of competition pilots must maintain the route proposed by the organization, without breaking from a virtual plan and having not more than 740 meters on each side of the path to keep within, they must also try to keep to the exact processing time estimated as optimum between stops. The can be penalised for every second of advance or delay, and time off course, turns into points, so the team who accumulates the least points is the aim of the test. To ensure the route is completed, each aircraft has a data logger that collects in a memory the exact position and time for each step (via an internal GPS), this information is then downloaded into the computer of the technical organizaers who can check the route graphically on a map and calculate the penalties.
The aircraft participating are stationed at El Berriel Aeroclub Gran Canaria for most of Friday 15th of July.

GC on SKY TV
... Continued from front page. Produced by UK based Nik Coleman Films it will Premiere on the new SKY Holiday and Cruise Channel launching in August. The channel is expected to feature in SKY’s Lifestyle programming section, alongside the likes of Discovery Real Time, Sky Arts and The Food Network.
The company expect to film in the Islands for up to three months during the first series, and claim the shows will be edited and ready for screening ‘very very quickly’ to, they say, ‘give the series a fresh, immediate feel’
12 other territories throughput the world have already been lined up to screen the show, in three languages. The show is expected to screen as multiple series repeats with the channel through into 2012, providing, the Producers claim, ‘a perfect platform’ for business wishing to heavily promote themselves during the crucial peak advance booking months.
They also expect the series to be repeated ‘for some considerable time’, citing a typical on air life for this type of programme of of 3-5 years.
Asked whether the series will extend beyond six episodes if it’s well received, Producer Sarah Coleman told the Canary News:
The producers are now asking business owners, whether hotels, restaurants, sporting or tourists attractions to contact them with a view to be included in the series. They also plan to speak with local journalists and broadcasters about their favourite places to go and things to to on the Islands – an opportunity for The Canary News Team to grab our 15 minutes of fame alongside all our readers!
Both the Production company and SKY are remaining tight lipped about the exact details of the channel ahead of it’s August 1st launch, however it’s believed to be backed by a long established Liverpool based online Travel Agency. Sharp eyed viewers will have already spotted a website promoting the channel - www.holidayandcruisechannel.co.uk, and social networking sites Twitter and Facebook both carry entries for the TV newcomers.
Fronting the show will be well known entertainers Lee Sanderson and Paul Carroll, they’ll be joined by a series of guest presenters, and the producers say they’ll also be looking for personalities who own local tourism based businesses to tell their own stories on camera.
‘If the reaction is good and the audience is there, we do have an option to extend our contract with the Broadcaster - so who knows, we could be starting our own Canaries weekly soap! - Seriously though if there’s enough interest and it’s working for both the broadcaster and the Islanders, then we will look seriously at extending the Production run’

Campaign Launched Campaign launched to help tackle international parental child abduction.
Sharon Cooke, from Reunite International Child Abduction Centre, welcomed the latest advice and said while sometimes there were no warning signs, there were things people could look for which may indicate their child was at risk.
Every other day a British child is abducted by a parent to a country which has not signed the 1980 Hague Convention on international parental child abduction, according to new research released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In practice this figure is likely to be even higher as many cases are simply not reported. The latest figures represent a ten per cent increase in new cases handled by the FCO in 2010/2011 and have been released to mark the launch of their child abduction prevention campaign. In the past five years the number of new child abduction cases handled by the FCO has doubled, partly as more people of different nationalities form relationships or families relocate overseas. Evidence shows that many cases occur around school holidays when a parent refuses to return a child following a visit to the parent’s home country. FCO figures also reveal just how widespread the problem has become. Last year the FCO handled cases in 97 ‘non Hague’ countries ranging from Algeria to Zambia. These are countries which have not signed up to the 1980 Hague convention on international parental child abduction and with whom negotiating the return of children to the UK can be extremely complex as there are no international agreements on returning children. Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Jeremy Browne said the campaign will help people become more aware of what they could do if they think their child may be at risk.
Local News 5
“Where there are warning signs these may include a change in either parent’s behaviour, a breakdown in a relationship or marriage, one parent expressing a wish to take the children on holiday - perhaps even on their own without the other parent - or one parent expressing a wish to move back to the country where the extended family lives,” she said.
“We are very concerned that we continue to see an increase in the number of cases of international parental child abduction. The latest figures suggest the problem affects people from all walks of life and not just certain types of families or particular countries. Finding a solution can be especially difficult if a child has been taken to a non-Hague country as there are no international systems in place to help you. This is why prevention is so important. The FCO will do whatever we can to provide advice and support but our role is limited, not least because we cannot interfere in the laws of another country” The FCO has teamed up with leading parenting websites Mumsnet and the Fatherhood Institute to spread the prevention message and make people aware of the support it can provide.
“For many people the issue of parental child abduction is something with which they may not have had direct personal contact. There’s often a perception – fuelled by a number of high profile cases - that it’s about fathers abducting their children but in reality it is more often mothers who are the abducting parent – either intentionally or unintentionally. However, the latest figures show just how widespread this problem has become,” she said. “The psychological impact on children can be traumatic and for the left-behind parent, the shock and the loss are unbearable, particularly if they don’t know where their children have been taken to. Even after they have been found, the fear and pain of not knowing if their children will return home is unimaginable.” If you are worried your child might be at risk, or if your child has been abducted you can call the Child Abduction Section at the Foreign Office on 0207 008 0878 or www.fco.gov.uk or reunite on 0116 2556 234.

Swedish National Day
Scandinavian Scene 7
The day was known as Swedish Flag Day until 1983 when the day was officially recognised as the Nations day. However, it was only in 2005 that the day became a national holiday too. Making the day a holiday was thought to emphasise the importance of the day. The Swedish School in San Agustin marked the day by having a celebration at the school premises. The children of the school entertained friends and relatives during the afternoon while everyone enjoyed some traditional food and drink. A few of those attending were wearing the Swedish national dress which is commonly worn on this day as wall as for other festive occasions.
It was the Swedish national day on the 6th June. Swedish National day or Flag day as it is also called is celebrated to commemorate the day Gustav Vasa was elected king of Sweden in 1523. This marked the end of the Kalmar Union which had seen Denmark, Sweden and Norway governed by one king, and Sweden was again an independent state
Cheap Excursions With a Twist Many of those walking around in the south of the island may have seen brochures lying around at bus stops and cafÊs in Scandinavian languages offering excursions at very cheap rates. Recently one of the major national newspapers in Norway, VG, wrote about these trips after being contacted by several people who had been on the excursions. The company offer excursions for as little as 8 Euros, but you have to sit through a demonstration by a company called Ecobed who sell wool bedding. The main complaint was the fact that the sales demonstration are a major part of the tour and this had not been made clear in the company’s literature. There was a mention of the fact that those taking part would have to attend a sales demonstration on the second page of the brochure but in relatively small writing. On the company’s website it says that they offer lunch and wine on their tours in connection with showing the latest products in cashmere and merino wool. It does not specify what kind of products or the duration of the demonstration. Previously there was no mention whatsoever of this at all on their website, but they have now added the information after this was highlighted by Norwegian media. They have promised to make the fact that everyone will have to attend a sales demonstration clearer and their new brochures being printed for the
winter season will state this in bold capital letters and a larger font. Ecobed, the company holding the sales demonstrations, will also now provide all customers with written information on what to do should they change their mind about their purchase. Customers that buy the product sign a contract of purchase and the products are then shipped to their home address and payment has to be made when they receive the goods. The company will now give all customers 14 days in which to cancel the purchase should they wish to do so. The European Consumer centre, Forbruker Europa, who were contacted by customers who had regretted their purchase are pleased that the companies involved are willing to change their marketing and policies for the better. Many within the travel trade in Norway have commented on the low price of the excursion and urged consumers to do a little research if faced with a too good to be true offer. They emphasise that you would normally have to pay a great deal more for a similar excursion so find out why it is so much cheaper. There is after all some truth to the old saying that nothing is free in life.

8 Your Questions Answered
‘The Canarian Lawyer’
Returning a dress
Driving without insurance
I bought a dress before the sales. I saw it later half price and I brought it back. Then I wanted to buy it with the reduced price but they told me that this would be fraud and they would not sell it to me if I did not pay the price I originally paid before sales. Is this legal?
What kind of fine could I expect for being caught driving without auto liability insurance?
No. The consumer rights system allows you to bring back a more expansive article in order to buy it again for the sales price. So long as it fulfills the necessary requirements for return and the periods of devolution, you can bring it back and buy it again at the lesser price. Patients’ right to Medical records I have been refused my medical records at the hospital. Do I have the right to obtain them? No. The information you asked for remains with the public or private health care service where you have received treatment in order to show that they have attended to you and how. Apart from this, a medical record contains information that can affect other people (e.g. in cases of cell donations, organ transplant, insemination, etc.) as well as subjective annotations by doctors who have treated the patient. However, you do have the right as a patient to accede to medical background checks and to obtain a copy of information and tests that appear, as well as medical reports. Complaints form I wanted to present a complaints form but they told me that I had to go to their central offices because they had no complaints form in the store. I went to the offices and they told me that I had to hand it in back at the store. Where do I have to present it? The complaints form has to be given in at the store where you received the service or made the purchase. They are obligated to offer their clients the right of complaint at all times within opening hours.
The driving of vehicles without valid auto liability insurance can attract a fine of 1.000 Euros for mopeds, 1.250 Euros for motorbikes, 1.500 Euros for cars and 2.600 for heavy vehicles. Disconnection of the telephone line I have asked my telephone company to disconnect the telephone line but they ignore it completely. Can I stop paying the bills? Yes. They are not allowed to charge you once two days has passed after your request for the disconnection. You can prove this with the reference number they gave you on telephone during the request for disconnection. Article 7 of the Spanish Royal Decree 899/2009, by means of which they approve the Bill of users’ rights related to electronic communication services, establishes that “the operator must refrain from invoicing or charging any amounts due which are not attributable to the user after two days has passed, during which time the disconnection must take effect”. Be aware that other charges may apply for early termination of a contract dependent on the agreement you have signed. Opening other peoples’ letters I have a neighbor who is opening my letters and after reading them returns them into the letter-box. How can I find out who? Hire a detective. Article 197 of the Spanish Criminal Code points out that: anybody who, so as to discover secrets or to violate privacy, seizes another persons documents, letters, email messages, etc., will be penalized with imprisonment of between one and four years and a fine.

Letters to the Editor 9
Please write to us and The Canary News will award the Letter of the Week a Free COMBO meal at Fusion Restaurant & Lounge Bar in Arguineguin (See advertisement below for address) The Canary News reserves the right to edit your letters and accepts no responsility for readers’ opinions.
Letter of the week WI FI BROADBAND, A CAUTIONARY TALE We recently decided to change from our long term broadband provider to try a new WI FI system which promised 10 -12 megabytes of broadband, free telephone calls to the UK and Spain all for an “inclusive” reasonable rate. We questioned the salesman who promised it would run our TV system which was received through our Router so we could still use the computer while the TV was working. He also promised that it would not be affected by weather etc. We had to sign a 15 month contract and the installation and 3 months payments up front. Once the system was installed in which I must add we lost our electricity supply for nearly two hours the system was up and running, but the TV was not playing properly and this was put down to the electrical problems at the time. They had no phone voice boxes in stock so we had to wait over a week to get the use of the phone and unfortunately when we did get the voice box, we were told that the phone did not come with the system and we had to pay a further 20 € for the privilege, we were not impressed. Further insult was added in that although the person on the other line could hear me ok, it sounded terrible at my end with echoing and you just could not hear people on the other end.
almost as soon as I arrived here last year and must admit that I really am a fan. The Canary News uses just such a connection in our offices in San Fernando and it has been so good for us that I have recently asked for a second system to be installed at my home in Vecindario. In fact we have benefited so greatly from the connection that we have been not only avidly been recommending it to many others, but have also agreed to officially assist in the development and distribution of these systems and in dealing with some of the customer concerns that have been raised by the, so far, very small group of people for whom the installation has not appeared ideal. That said, I hope you will believe me when I say that I find your situation less than ideal and in fact a little worrying. Not so much from the point of view that you were not satisfied with the system’s performance but more from the point of view that there seems to have been a number of miscommunications involved in getting you connected and in what you had expected to receive for your money. That said, of course you are entitled to expect good and timely delivery of precisely the system you have purchased, and if any provider cannot give you what they promised, then a serious question mark must be raised over what has been agreed, and what has actually been supplied.
This system may be good for people who can get no other broadband provider, and as I was told afterwards, they do have a computer based TV system which they “recommend” at extra expense which may or may not work, as their information states “Rain, wind born sand and dust, low cloud cover all affect radio-waves adversely as do atmospheric conditions”. Finally, as for the “Free phone calls” I got a telephone bill of 9 Euro’s on top of the cancellation fee, and I do not know what it was for as I never received an invoice, so be warned, and think carefully before you buy. JS, Puerto Rico Dear JS, Thank you for your letter. Before addressing your concerns, propriety dictates that I must declare an interest. I too have been impressed with the all inclusive packages that are on offer for this type of internet connection on the island. I have found them to offer the best connections available on the south of Gran Canaria, having taken up one of these offers
It is perplexing, and you are not the only one to have such problems. However I do, though with some caution, sympathise with your internet provider in this instance. The fact is if they can satisfactorily show that the download speed you were receiving is within the parameters they originally stated, and furthermore in some instances they can even show that other similar systems are working happily over their network, then it does appear that the problem does not actually lie with them. Other worrying factors include a sales person who actively does themselves out of the commission they could earn from selling you the phone, by seeming to suggest that it was free. I am not sure why a sales person might do that, other than by mistake. I do concede that if the phone call quality is not of a sufficient standard that there may be an issue to be looked into, but this must be done methodically. Terminating the system is no way to find the problem. The fact that your old provider offered you a better deal only when they thought they were leaving does not say much about their scruples either.
We quickly realised that the TV was not going to work on this system and called the office, and someone came out but said it was our TV system and not their system so basically tough luck. We hoped it would improve but it did not and after the old provider cut us off we had no TV system that was watchable, the phone sounded like Skype and although on their internet speed site it said we were getting 10 megabytes, every other speed site we checked on said we were only getting 3 – 4 megabytes. In the end because of the above we called our old provider back, who gave us a better deal, and cancelled the Wi-Fi system which cost 5 months further rental to cancel, so it was a very expensive mistake on our part, and the reason for this letter is to ensure no-one else pays this price.
was not working, however when they have switched from the English channel they want to one from another European country (some systems use multiple broadcasts to provide a wider European selection of programming) it seems to have worked fine. But not so well with the British TV broadcasts.
I wonder what test sites you used to check your internet speeds. Can you wirte in and tell me? In the next edition I will be looking further into this problem and would very much like to hear from anyone else who has had similar issues.
Whether it be the television provider or the internet provider or any other provider at fault. In my time looking at the concerns voiced about this I have found that nearly all the people, who have not been as pleased as I am, appear to have some things in common. Primarily the English TV systems they use to watch streamed content over the internet. Almost all of those who have had problems are using one of 3 types of TV system, either a sling box, a Virtual Private Network or a shared card system. I have yet to find anyone who has experienced the same problems with TV systems from Scandinavian countries or further afield and so the problem at least appears to be isolated to those trying to watch English TV. The unfortunate part of this story is that many of these TV system suppliers are too often rather secretive about what it is they are actually offering people. This makes it difficult to figure out where faults lie. Especially if, as I suspect, not all of them are acting strictly within the law so as to provide TV streams from abroad. Although I do not yet fully understand the workings of such TV systems [I will cover that in a future edition] I find it most odd that the Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and German providers of internet based TV do not appear to be adversely affected in the main. I’ve even spoken to people who’ve said that the system
As a community newspaper our first and only responsibility is to our readers and so I trust you will not judge me harshly for reserving my opinion for the moment until we have had a chance to gather more information on problems like yours. I trust also that you are now receiving a good service from your old supplier, and putting aside the extra expense to go through this process, I hope that you will not get any similar problems in the future. As for the high speed, all inclusive internet packages that are currently being offered, I would hope that all of you will take the time to enquire carefully about what it is you want to do with the connection before signing a contract. The particular provider we use, I know offers a testing service for a very small charge, whereby they will come to your house and confirm to you if it is appropriate for your needs or not. From my perspective it would seem to be a sensible option. What I do know with certainty is that I am supremely satisfied with my connection and the envy of all my friends for having flawless internet speeds and cheap phone calls. I’m sorry I could not be more helpful in this instance, but you are already disconnected from the other provider. I would love to hear much more about these issues, and I will be reporting fully on them in up coming editions. Edward Timon

Over the last couple of months or so the market has been preoccupied with Greece, unusually for this time of the year its not holiday bookings or resorts they have been talking about but how is Greece going to repay its debts. As we know the good citizens of Greece have also taken to the streets protesting against all of the measures the Government have had to consider implementing to reduce its debt and their concern of course is how it will hit their pockets so not really an unnatural reaction. Like many of the countries who were the last to enter the Eurozone the funds they received certainly helped the feel good factor and the governments “closed eyes” approach made things seem very rosy but the gravy train had to stop at sometime which is one of the reasons why we are seeing the situation as it is now. So what is happening now to fix the problem? Of late the Greek parliament have finally had to agree a series of Blue 1 measures R&A to increase taxes, 75% cut public spending, C 100 R 26 privatise Massets and 87 G 31 provide Y redundancy 50% 2 B 93 to many Kpublic sector employees, these 45 measures have enabled the Finance Ministers within the EurozonePantone to release billion euros to cover ® a further 12 25% 2757 current “expenses” and hopefully avoid a default on the government backed bonds.

Now its not just the eurozone that has its fair share of bad news, in the UK we have recently heard that retail sales are down and people are not spending. The most recent figures for the Services Sector (which covers restaurants, hotels etc) has shown some very disappointing statistics , link this to the closures of many High Street household names, the Bank of England saying that mortgage repossession’s are likely to increase then you have a lack of confidence in the recovery path the UK is taking, although we all know this is a longer term commitment to stability and economic growth rather than a short term stop gap . Moving Here 11
Moving to The Canary Islands Information and Preparation
There are many cargo and container companies from all over the world to choose from when moving home to The Canaries, however whatever they might know about international shipping, there are very few who really understand the nuances of dealing with moving to these islands. We spoke to one of the most successful removals and shipping companies working on the islands and through the port of Las Palmas. “Often we’ll speak to customers who have been somewhat misguided by ‘Relocation Advisors’ purporting to have inside knowledge on the best way to ship their worldly possessions to the archipelago. More often than not these are simply people who have lived here for a little time and think they can make quick money by advising customers on how to cut corners. We have been in this business for more than 11 years and it has taken us that long to fully understand all the special circumstances of the Canary Islands, which are not only a very specific case in Europe, but also have many of their own special rules on customs clearance and import taxes.” Bad advice can cost you money and time. If correctly handled a shipment should not take more than 3 days to get through the port authority process, however lack of preparation can lead to unnecessary delays of between 8 weeks and 3 months before you see your goods again. The paperwork must be right to avoid import taxes and unplanned-for storage costs. It is a very long time since it was last possible to get items through the ports here quickly, simply by bribing an official with ‘black money’. Las Palmas port is a tricontinental gateway and as such employs very modern methods to ensure contraband is not smuggled in and that all the appropriate taxes are paid. Anyone who thinks they can grease the wheels of bureaucracy by seeking out a dodgy official is not only in for a surprise, but will almost certainly find themselves in trouble. Getting things in order Many people come here first to find somewhere to live and then once they have secured accommodation return to their own country to organise the shipping of their furniture and perhaps even their car. It is when they first arrive however that they should be seeking expert advice. Many of the necessary papers needed to get your belongings on to the islands take a few weeks to obtain and so should be applied for as early as possible to avoid delay and extra expense. A young man moving here might, for instance, be given a motor car by his father as a leaving present only to find that having not owned the vehicle for very long will invite full import tax on the car. You have to have owned it for a minimum time before it can be brought in as part of your removal property. In fact shipping a vehicle is a very specific process and it is not as
simple as just driving in to a container and declaring the container, you must declare much of the contents too, especially vehicles. As well as that some of the cheaper companies make no special arrangements to secure a vehicle for transit by sea, you have to know what you are doing or you risk damaging the vehicle, or even losing the shipment. A ‘Relocation Advisor’ is not really a professional shipping agent and is unlikely to have either the specialist knowledge or the contacts to get the job done right, first time. You need to speak to an expert if you want to be sure of what is involved. Containers are large items which must be handled with preparation and care. You will need to organise storage, parking, declarations and classification and much more than just the hire and shipping of it. There is no one size fits all solution. Every removal is unique. To do it right you need to speak to the specialists who have the right knowledge and equipment for the job. Pheonix Trans International is a complete logistics company who deal with everything in the field of transport and removals. They speak German, French, English and Spanish and are uniquely positioned to ensure that your shipment arrives safely and reliably. They look after the whole process whether it be a house move, a car shipment, the transport of a yacht or the moving of works of art. They deal with domestic and commercial shipments on a daily basis and are well placed to advise you on the best way to deal with your move.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’
by Barrie Mahoney
13
Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.
Energy Island
We hear a lot about global warming, renewable energy and climate change nowadays. The need seems to be clear enough but, as yet, only around 12.9% of the energy supply required by the world comes from renewable sources. Of that, about half comes from the burning of wood for heat and cooking in developing countries, which causes other problems. In addition, these sources are not always renewable, because they depend upon new trees being planted, which is often overlooked. The fastest growing technology is solar electric power, yet this continues to be among the most expensive option and will continue to be so for several more years. The good news is that a recent report on climate change says that renewable technologies could provide 80 per cent of the world’s energy needs in the next thirty years or so. However, there is a solution closer to hand than we may think, and that solution is just a few hops across the water to one of our beautiful islands - El Hierro, once known as ‘Fire Island’. El Hierro gained its original name of ‘Fire Island’ from its origins of volcanic eruptions many years ago, and although
volcanic activity has now gone, the natural Earth forces of water and wind remain. These power sources are now due to be harnessed so that by 2012, this small island in the Atlantic will be the first to be able to generate all of its electricity needs from sources that are renewable.
There is plenty of wind on El Hierro and visitors will have noticed that the reason that most plants and trees seem to be suffering from osteoporosis is that they have become bent by its force. There is enough rain to meet the needs of the 10,700 inhabitants of the island, and the five wind turbines in the north east of the island will produce enough electric power to supply all of the island’s energy needs, as well as pumping water from a reservoir near the harbour to a bigger reservoir at a higher level within a volcanic crater. What if there is no wind? Well, in that case, water is released from the higher reservoir through these pipes that will drive hydraulic turbines to create electric energy. Therefore, electricity can be produced by wind or water power. Clever stuff! This project in El Hierro is the first that does not use electricity produced from
traditional methods, and contributes to moving the island towards being totally self-sufficient. When the project is completed in 2012, this renewable energy project will produce three times the island’s needs for electricity, including electricity for 60,000 tourists who visit each year. Also, when there is a surplus of electricity produced, this will be used for three desalination plants to convert seawater into fresh water for irrigation. In 2012, the oil-fired electricity power station that currently produces electricity for the island will close, reducing carbon emissions and saving on the cost of importing 6000 tonnes of oil each year. Although this renewable energy project will have cost €65 million, future income from this energy source will eventually repay this investment, cover future maintenance and replacement costs, and still make a profit.
This project alone means that the island will meet 100% of its energy needs by 2015, but El Hierro has launched other sustainability projects too. The island is mainly agricultural, and is a leader in organic farming, as well as in projects that convert sewage into fertiliser and methane. Even more energy savings are planned after 2012 by replacing all the cars on the island with electric vehicles, and although the investment costs for charging terminals and purchasing the vehicles will need a similar investment to the wind energy project, this would be repaid in ten years, assuming that drivers are charged the same price as for petrol. Yes, there is always a catch! © Barrie Mahoney

14 Language
With Theresa Coe
Spanish Lesson
Back to the future, part 1 Essentially, there are three ways to talk about future actions in Spanish: 1)Nice and easy: using the ‘present simple’, e.g. mañana trabajo (tomorrow I´m working) 2)The ‘going to’ future: to talk about plans or observations, e.g. mañana voy a trabajar (tomorrow I´m going to work) 3)Equivalent of ‘will/won´t’ (future simple): for promises, predictions and the ‘first conditional’ to talk about consequences , e.g. si tengo suficiente dinero este verano, iré a Londres (if I have enough money this summer, I´ll go to London) Present simple for future actions The English language uses ‘ing’ forms of verbs for all sorts of things, including the future. An example is ‘I´m going out tonight’. However, the Spanish equivalent of this would be: I go out tonight – (yo) salgo esta noche. Here are a few more examples: Como en casa el sábado (I´m eating at home on Saturday) ¿Vienes a la barbacoa este domingo? (Are you coming to the barbecue this
Sunday?) Mañana no voy al colegio porque estoy enfermo (tomorrow I´m not going to school because I´m ill) Estudio esta noche porque tengo un examen el viernes (I´m studying tonight because I have an exam on Friday).
As you can see, while we say ON Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday, the Spanish use THE (always ‘el’ because the days of the week – los días de la semana – are all masculine) In summary, you can use the present simple (I talk, I walk, I dance) whenever you´d use the present continuous in English for future actions. They also use sometimes use the present simple when we´d use WILL, e.g. for spontaneous decisions: Te llamo luego, ¿vale? - I´ll call you later, okay? (Literally: you I call later) Te veo esta noche, ¿no? – I´ll see you tonight, right? (Lit: you I see this night, no?) The ‘going to’ future This is the one we use to talk about plans we´ve already made, or the obvious consequence of something we observe:
Lesson 43
Mira las nubes negras: ¡va a llover! (Look at the black clouds: it´s going to rain!) To form the ‘going to’ future, we use: the present tense of IR (to go) + ‘a’ + original infinitive verb Like a maths equation isn´t it? Actually, Spanish is pretty logical. However IR, (pronounced ‘ear’) is an irregular though very important – verb, so it´s worth revising how to conjugate it in the present: (yo) voy – I go (tú) vas – you go (informal, singular) (él/ella/eso) va - he/she/that goes (usted) va - you go (formal, singular) (nosotros) vamos – we go (ellos) van - they go (ustedes) van – you go (plural form: y’all or youse) Here are a few more examples: Voy a ver una peli esta noche (I´m going to watch a film tonight) ¿Vas a trabajar el sábado? (Are you going to work on Saturday?) Maria va a cuidar a mi gato mientras
estoy en Londres (Maria´s going to look after my cat while I´m in London) Usted va a traer mi libro esta tarde, ¿No? (You´re going to bring my book this afternoon, right?) Vamos a comprar un piso el año próximo (we´re going to buy a flat next year) Mis padres van a visitarme en agosto (my parents are going to visit me in August) Ustedes van a cerrar a medianoche, ¿No? (You´re going to close at midnight, right?) In the next issue we´ll look at the will/ won´t future. Voices Of Change Voces Del Cambio Avaaz, now with almost 10million members worldwide, were one of the many organisations who rallied international support for the Arab Spring and who regularly call on their supporters to fight tyranny in all its forms, from Sudan to Burma to Canada, France and South Africa and many places beyond, using little more than people power and the collective voice. Through almost 1 million actions, 7 campaigns, 30,000 phone calls, investigations and countless stunts and legal tactics, they’ve played a lead role in stopping Murdoch from buying over 50% of UK commercial media! Now they’re taking their red-hot UK campaign global, to roll back the Murdoch menace everywhere. Avaaz—meaning “voice” in several European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages—launched in 2007 with a simple democratic mission: organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want. Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. Our model of internet organising allows thousands of individual efforts, however small, to be rapidly combined into a powerful collective force. The Avaaz community campaigns in 14 languages, served by a core team on 4 continents and thousands of volunteers. We take action -- signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events -- to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all.
Visit Avaaz.org for more info.
Here’s their plan: together they want us to a) hire investigators to expose Murdoch’s corrupt tactics beyond the UK b) organize prominent voices to break the cycle of fear and speak out on this issue and c) mobilise people in key countries behind new laws and legal actions that stop Murdoch and clean up the media for good. Avaaz members live in every country where Murdoch works, making their movement one the only single organisations who can truly take on a campaign against his global empire and win. The time is now – They say if just 20,000 people donate a small amount each, we have a chance to seize this oncein-a-generation chance. Go to the link below to chip in: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stop_rupert_ murdoch_donate/?vl
End Murdoch’s Criminal Empire Hacking murdered children’s phones, paying off police, destroying evidence of crimes, threatening politicians -- UK leaders say Rupert Murdoch’s empire has “entered the criminal underworld”. For decades, Murdoch has ruled with impunity - making and breaking governments with his vast media holdings and scaring opponents into silence, but a powerful new force in the world claim to be fighting back, and winning!
For weeks, nearly daily revelations have uncovered the extent of Murdoch media’s corruption in the UK. His operatives hacked the phones of thousands of
people, including grieving widows and soldiers who died in Iraq, stole a Prime Minister’s bank information and harassed him for 10 years, paid huge sums to police officers, and Rupert’s son, James Murdoch, himself authorized hush money to victims. But this is the tip of the iceberg -- Murdoch is a global problem. He’s famous for dictating editorial positions to his papers. He corrupts and controls democracies by pushing politicians to back his extremist ideas on war, torture and a host of other planetary ills, and destroys the careers of politicians with smear campaigns unless they do his bidding. In the US, he helped elect George W. Bush and has most of the Republican presidential candidates actually on his payroll (see sources below). His Fox News Network spreads lies to promote the war in Iraq, push resentment of Muslims and immigrants and spawned the right-wing tea party. Maybe worst of all, he has helped block critical global action on climate change. Murdoch’s reign of fear appears to be breaking down, and many are on the edge of speaking out against his tactics. The dam may be about to break in the US, Australia and elsewhere, but we need to give it an urgent push by investigating Murdoch further, organising high profile opposition, and making sure that our politicians pass laws that will clean up our media for good. Let’s make it happen together: The Avaaz community kept campaigning on this issue when almost everyone else in the UK gave up hope. Because they’re people-powered, they say they don’t have the same fear of Murdoch that almost everyone else does. It’s part of the promise that people power has for change in the world. Today, hope is breaking out in the UK -- let’s take it global.

What is Open Government? ¿Qué es e The other day I was sent an email containing information on an international movement which is advocating radical changes to the political and social spheres of our society. I refer to the Open Government movement. A book originally written by Sebastian Lorenzo and César Calderón and in the public domain so that anyone can download it free from the Internet. Open Government is the institutional response to many of the demands recently espoused by 15 M and the Spanish Indignados. What is advocated Government?
by
the
voter, the citizen partner. Politician’s and political parties to serve the public directly.
Open
Quite simply , the democratic participation of citizens in state affairs, continuously, using social networks and the Internet as a means of expression. It is “an evolution of our democratic system and values of coexistence based on the establishment of mechanisms for government transparency, as well as permanent spaces for collaboration and participation... beyond the exercise of suffrage every four years.”
What is needed to establish an Open Government?
Mainly two things: Open Data and electronic government (e-government). OpenData provides transparent information on institutions, utilities and politicians who run it. It is a measure against corruption. Where the money goes, what it is and who manages it. E-government consists of technical measures, websites and networks necessary for the active involvement and participation of citizens in government agencies. Methods to enable governments to be recipients of authentic public opinion. In Spain we are just at the beginning. There is a law prescribing Citizens’
Electronic Access to Public Services (LAECSP) and little else. The Basque Government has implemented an open platform www.irekia.euskadi.net/es. And the Junta de Castilla y Leon has created an Observatory on the Information Society www.orsi.jcyl.es/ In the U.S. there is www.data.gov, and in England we have the www.data.gov.uk/. So far Canary Island data is discouraging. The Canaries are far from eGovernment and Open Government. See reference made by Manuel M. Almeida about the subject in Mangas Verdes, http:// mangasverdes.es/2010/08/08/canariaslejos-egobierno-open-government/ where he says “the overall picture is not too flattering, but it should be noted, on the one hand, that there are notable differences between each of the levels of administration and, on the other, that there are notable improvements in some areas, but setbacks and stagnation in others. “ ¿Qué se necesita para establecer un Gobierno Abierto?
An Open Government is a government that engages in CONVERSATION and provides its citizens with transparent information, communicates everything it decides and more, it listens to what people want, and makes decisions based on the preferences of the majority. It advocates the importance of the individual, who can communicate with their rulers without intermediaries. It is a move from representative democracy to participatory democracy. The citizen

solidarity. If anyone has an idea, please share it: Creativity of all for the benefit of everyone.

The Great Green Path El Gran Andén Verde
A walk along the great Andén Verde (Green Path) of Mount Tirma Un paseo por el gran Andén Verde y la Montaña de Tirma Leaving La Aldea we find the road to Agaete known as El Andén Verde along an extraordinary coastal cliff about 600 meters above sea level that sits just below the Tamadaba natural park and mount Tirma on the western side of Gran Canaria.
You’ll find areas hardly ever explored and, if brave and fit enough, you can even hike cross country where you will encounter beautiful scenery like the mysterious Playa Fósil de la Virgen (Fossil beach of The Virgin); The House of Job whose traditional Canarian structure, today in a fragile state, once served as a resting place for the shepherds who passed through here; the imposing Faneque cliff, the highest on the island; and many other treats leaving you with the magical feeling of being disconnected from the rest of the world, due to its remote beauty. You will need to be in good shape to do this as the trails are rather heavy going with few markings, so a good knowledge of the terrain or an experienced guide are highly recommended. The Shepherd’s Leap was once a common way to move through rugged areas with many ridges, this technique
uses a long wooden stick, we call Garrote which has a metal tip called a regatón. The usual method of using the garrote was to place the regatón firmly in the earth at a point below where one is standing, after which one jumps and slides down the pole to negotiate a steep drop, repeating the leap and slide as many times as is necessary to reach the bottom of a ravine. These sticks were also used for self defence and of one’s livestock, and this itself evolved in what we nowadays know as Lucha del garrote, a martial art particular to The Canary Islands. The Andén Verde is composed of several formations, ravines, cliffs and mountains the most spectacular of which is Mount Tirma. This mountain was regarded by the ancient peoples of this island, the Canarios, as a sanctuary and it is here that many of them came to pray for rain as well as seek refuge, here they felt safe from persecution. la montaña de Tirma. Tirma is also the name of one of two prestigious films shot here in Gran Canaria, filmed in 1954 it is based on the history of the Canario’s resistance against the Castilian forces who invaded the island. It tells the story of Guayarmina, a beautiful (and very fashionable) princess, who finds herself love torn between Bentejuí, a Canario Warrior Chief and Don Hernan, a Castilian officer. The film was a block buster in its time and much lauded, however it was then lost for nearly 50 years, until what is thought to be the only surviving copy, in black and white, was unearthed in 2005. It was rereleased earlier this year on DVD in digital colour. (the other film of note shot here, believe it or not, was John Huston’s Moby Dick).

In this area there are many traditional pastors (shepherds) dedicated to the care and rearing of goats, many make their own cheese to sell and among the dishes most popular are the Canarian staples of potaje, gofio, goat’s milk, fried fish, and of course goat meat, a variety of which is often dried and salted if not served fresh. Baby goats, who have been fed only milk are known as baifo, some of these are killed for their meat and their curd is used for making cheese. The curd is hung in the air and then broken into pieces. A piece of this is then thrown into warm milk which curdles, two or three hours later it is moved slowly into a bottomless pan to drain, rock salt is added to the top, and then turned the next day and more salt added and this is how you get soft cheese set and ready to eat. If you prefer it semi cured you need to let it dry for few more days flipping it every day , for a more mature version you need to let it set for a month or more. You can give this cheese an “oil

Born in Las Palmas this extremely talented Canarian designer is the creative force behind Gabriel Croissier swimwear. After originally studying to be a Land Surveyor at Las Palmas University and working a regular job he realised that he needed something that would allow him to explore his more creative side and something that needed constant change. He soon moved to Barcelona to study fashion at Lotja, the very same school where artist Joan Miro studied. This provided great inspiration for his future collections. Using a range of different themes such as surrealism, abstract art, futurism, cubism, utopia, dreams, Russian art and for his latest collection, British culture Gabriel has shown that he possess a wild imagination and is not afraid of pushing limits. He became part of Moda Calida in 2009, the label that identifies fashion made on the island, especially swimwear, and is characterized by quality and originality. Beach Beauty
If you are the kind of girl who likes to look glam and polished on the beach but is scared of looking like a panda after the first swim Do Not Panic! There are so many wonderful creations out there to combat this. Waterproof mascara can be found in almost every make up store, it adds length and volume to your eyes and as it is waterproof means you can still flutter those lovely lashes on the beach. One thing we have to remember when we use products like this is that we may need a special remover for it, I highly recommend Clarins eye make up remover as is gently enough for your eyes but effective enough to get rid of these products easily. Use a cotton pad or soft wipe and apply a bit of the remover to it. Gently wipe the mascara with it. Don’t dab too hard as you might pull out some of the lashes; after you’ve done this wash your face normally and apply some eye cream. Some people like to
use baby oil to do this but as this contains petroleum jelly it can harm the eyes so I instead recommend virgin olive oil. Wet your eyes with fresh water before doing so then soak a cotton pad or two and gently press against the eyes for a few seconds, you should then carefully start to wipe the mascara until the black smudges stop coming out on the pads. The use of bronzer might not be necessary during the summer months around here but a dash of lip-gloss or pale lipstick will do wonders especially if you find one with an SPF that will protect them and keep them moisturised. Clinique has a great range of long
lasting glosswear with SPF 15 so not only are you looking gorgeous but you are also nurturing your lips, making them even more kissable. The most important tip of all in this part of the world is to respect the sun it is very easy to get burned so invest in a good suncream, many tinted moisturizer have sun protection factors so try to find one with at least 15 or more depending on your complexion. Some of the best brands for SPF protection come from Avene which offers a great range of waterproof hypoallergenic suncream and foundation perfect for sensitive skin. Try also Roche-Posay who specialise in products for skin that breaks out easily, also protecting it and keeping it moisturised under the sun. You can find this and many other fantastic treats
on Farmacia Sebastian Sanchez Avenida de Galdar 44, San Fernando Maspalomas 928 76 14 98 where they will advise you and help you to find the best make up and skincare product according to your needs All you need now is a fabulous sun hat and a piña colada Welcome to the summer Enjoy

Blueberries
One of the few real facts of life is that we get older … and as we do, we start to spend a small fortune on lotions and potions – believing them to be a miracle cure for the outward signs of the ageing process. However, the most powerful anti-ageing products are provided by “Mother Nature” in the foods that we eat. You get out what you put in. Start spending a few more €´s on your food and a few less on lotions and potions for a healthier and longer life
potent anti-oxidant – and also contain procyanadin which promotes cell health, improved vision, joint flexibility, and health of the arteries.
Leafy Greens
Blueberries are a powerhouse when it comes to nutrition. They are full of anti-oxidants that fight against free radicals. The pigmentation combats oxidative stress, one of the main causes of ageing. They help your brain to produce dopamine – involved with co-ordination, memory function and mood. Other berries also have powerful healing and disease prevention properties.
Chlorella
Vitamin B Complex
Studies show very clearly that if you have a diet rich in leafy greens, the risk of age related muscular degeneration is significantly reduced. They improve short term memory, reduce the risk of heart disease, and help to destroy the free radicals that are so damaging to our cells.
This is a single celled fresh water algae plant and is considered to be a near perfect food. One of its most important properties is its ability to help your body get rid of heavy metal toxins.
Garlic
These play a key role in our metabolism, healthy skin and bones, immune and nervous system, cell growth and brain function. Vitamin B cannot be stored in our bodies, so we need regular tops ups throughout the day. Eating good sources of protein, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes are all good sources.
Broccoli
Another dark green anti-oxidant with miraculous powers of healing and disease prevention. Broccoli contains very high levels of isothiocyanates – a cancer fighting compound. Just ten spears a week can make the difference! Other similar vegetables include brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and watercress.
The allicin in garlic (giving the distinctive odour) is a very powerful anti-oxidant acting faster with free radicals than any other compound. Garlic improves blood flow, inhibits the formation of plaque and prevents cholesterol from oxidizing. However, these benefits exist only with fresh garlic and don’t come along with jarred, powdered or dried garlic.

The Good Samaritan
After we had donned our ‘nighties’ – little hands warming around steaming mugs of Ovaltine - and little hearts racing in joyous expectation, my dear Mum would sit with her children at her knee and draw our day to a close with welcome bedtime stories - painting simple word pictures for us to enjoy.
‘Today you have given an old woman a lot of joy,’ she whispered. ’You are my Good Samaritan’. Choking back my tears I squeezed her hand reassuringly then walked out into the dim morning light.
Among my favourites was the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’, a name now synonymous with the idea of people being there for others, to help to meet a need and/or support in any way.
Behind me I heard the door shut .The closing of a life. I didn’t pick up any more fares that day. A lot of “What ifs?” crowded my mind. What if that lady had found an uncompassionate modern day Phariseewhat if was impatient to end my shift? What if I had refused to take the run or had beeped the horn only once, then driven away? What if.....?
The parable tells of a man beaten up by thugs, robbed and left to die on the roadside. Two people approached, one a Priest, the other a Hebrew. Neither showed any compassion, but merely glanced at the man and hurried on. A third passerby, a Samaritan, who at that time was expected to despise the victim because of differences in culture and creed stopped to help. He dressed the man’s wounds, took him to a nearby inn, paid for his keep and even returned to ensure his full recovery. Disregarding race and religion and abandoning his own agenda, the Good Samaritan took pity. Passionate COMPASSION responding to desperate NEED.
I did not set out to be a Good Samaritan, but that old lady afforded me opportunity. I doubt I have ever done anything more significant in my life.” ------------------------------------------------Of course the story of the Good Samaritan was originally told by Jesus in answer to a Pharisee who was questioning him about what it really means to identify and show love to ones neighbour. While people may not always remember what you said or did, they will always remember how you made them feel.
The following modern day ‘parable’ has done the rounds, but I make no apologies here for the re-telling . THE TAXI DRIVER “I arrived at the given address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I walked to the door and knocked. ‘Just a second’, came a frail voice. The door opened. A little old lady stood there, dressed like someone out of a 1940’s movie. The apartment looked unlived in. Furniture covered with sheets, no pictures on the walls, no knickknacks. “Would you carry my bag?” she asked. I took her arm and her small suitcase as we slowly walked to my taxi. She kept thanking me for my kindness. ‘It’s nothing’, I told her. ‘I m only treating you the same way I would want my own mother to be treated.’ When we got in my cab she gave me an address then asked, ‘Could you drive me there through the city? ‘It’s not the shortest route, I answered. ‘Oh, I don’t mind,’ she said. ‘I’m in no hurry - I’m on my way to a Hospice’. I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw her eyes were glistening. ‘I don’t have any family left now,’ she continued softly.
tightly.
Perhaps the taxi driver learned this early lesson at his mother’s knee. Who knows? ‘The doctor says I don’t have very long’. I reached over and shut off the meter.
‘You have to make a living,’ she answered.
For two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me where she had once worked .We passed through the neighbourhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She asked me to stop outside a building that once was a ballroom where she remembered dancing as a teenager.
‘There will be other passengers,’ I replied. Almost without thinking, I bent over and gave her a big hug. She held onto me
I may not be called to be a fully fledged ‘Good Samaritan’ today, but someone out there may just be in need of a kind word, a hug, or a bit of TLC. If so, I’m up for it! Time to stop pontificating - actions speak louder than words don’t they? K. Owen. July 2011
Sometimes she simply gazed out, lost in thought, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly announced, ‘I’m tired. Let’s go now’. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. Two nurses came to meet us. They were caring and obviously expecting her, they sat her gently down in a wheelchair as I brought her suitcase to the door. ‘How much do I owe you?’ She asked, reaching into her purse. ‘Nothing,’ I said
“Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures.”

How do you tell an enemy from an ally? Our friends often say things that make us defensive. If they care, they have a duty to be honest. And those who want to exploit or even harm us know the value of flattery. This month, you’ll find out who really is (or isn’t) on your side.
Patience can sometimes be a sign of weakness, sometimes a sign of strength. Ee need to identify the reason why, in July, you are refraining from pursuing an option that is open to you. It is not cowardice; it is actually a combination of courage and cleverness.

This is Planet Earth, where things have been messy ever since that unfortunate incident with the apple and the serpent. You must learn to love reality, warts and all. In July, if you look at what’s good and truly appreciate it, what’s bad will get better.
Are you settling for mediocrity when you could be achieving brilliance? July brings your chance to dare to be different. Everything can improve if you’re brave enough to seek change. It is as if we value consistency more than excellence. What do you value.

The secret of success in July, involves appreciating what you’ve got. Don’t waste time feeling upset if this doesn’t match your idea about what you ought to have. Develop love and appreciation, even for things you are not so sure of, and for the people you are in conflict with.
We must, of course, be aware of people’s feelings - and sensitive to them. Weakness that stems from a desire to avoid doing harm, is strength. Strength shown out of a desire to look good - is weakness! Remember that, in July, and all will be well.

You’ve Gotta Fight For Your Right
Hello once again, I’m happy to be back writing for The Canary News after our little summer break. If you have been reading these columns, have been actively thinking about the principles and ideas that we’ve been exploring, then it is likely that some of the perceived problems which you may have been experiencing prior to applying these principles practically in your day-to-day life no longer seem to be such a big deal. So, you’ve been making progress, feeling a difference, a greater sense of self confidence and inner strength... then all of a sudden, BANG!... something happens in the world around you that has the potential to knock you back, back to that treadmill... like the hamster back on the wheel yet again. Life has a tendency to throw challenges right in front of us that sometimes we don’t see coming as they approach us from a blind spot and sneak in underneath the radar. Sometimes these kinds of challenges are thrust upon us by unavoidable circumstance and at other times by other peoples ignorance and selfishness. So, under these conditions how can we best navigate ourselves through potentially treacherous and choppy seas? Over the past few years I have been working with a particular client who has had a very rough life and more than their fair share of trauma and abuse, and yet they have made incredible progress and have effectively turned their life around in every way. This includes coming off of many years dependency on antidepressants. The positive changes that I have seen in this individual have been incredibly inspiring for me personally and they have served as an example of how powerful the correctly focused mind and will can be. And yet,
fate has dealt a couple of challenging situations for them to deal with, which involve people and circumstances outside of their control, and which are a potential reminder of many years of being the victim of someone else’s selfish abuse. And with this situation has come all the bad memories associated with a very traumatic past. When we are confronted by circumstances outside of our control, which may remind us of things we would rather not be reminded of, then we have a choice, and the choice is this: Do we sink, or do we swim? Just because we may have felt like we were drowning at times in the past because of someone else’s ignorance, do we allow ourselves to just slip back into the old role as the victim, or instead when confronted with such an opportunity for further growth and personal development, can we learn how to put a stop to that old repetitive pattern once and for all...and stand up for ourselves and fight for our right TO BE FREE? Personally the thought of my client being in the company of a person who has caused shameful damage to this clients self confidence makes me incredibly angry and extremely concerned... and yes, I am very human, and care genuinely about the well-being of the people who choose to talk to me about things that very often they have not talked to another soul about. This humbles me, deeply. Under such circumstances it becomes necessary to see the situation as a wonderful opportunity to stand up and be counted, and I am sure that we all can think of a number of ways for us to stand up... to put our foot down... and fight the Good Fight... for our Right To Be Our New Selves, and make no mistake it is our Right To Be Free of the negative influence of the past.

Englishman in Gran Canaria! met with electric exuberance inspired of a pop symphonic repertoire. ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’ was the number that opened what was also his first concert in the Canary Islands, the second number “Englishman in New York”, one of the best-known songs of his solo career, was accompanied with clapping and singing from the audience. After these classics, Sting told the capacity sell-out audience he was ‘’very happy to be in Las Palmas for the first time,’’ and introduced his band and the OFGC, led by American Chelsea Tipton.
Sting, translated his name into Spanish as “aguijón” and for this concert was accompanied by 90.000 watts of lighting and a 180K sound. The night definitely belonged to Sting. It was evident that the English musician retains the charisma and personality that overwhelming gave him fame and fortune, and he has reached near perfection with this orchestral sound that surprised everyone in attendance.
Symphonicity conquers 12,000 people in the Canary Islands … British musician and former member of the band The Police, Thomas Matthew Gordon, better known as Sting did not disappoint the more than 12,000 people who gathered at the Stadium de Gran Canaria to enjoy the concert this week opening the Spanish leg of his 2011 world tour. Wearing a black jacket and a white shirt he leaped on to the stage around 10pm, just over 30 minutes later than scheduled, before an enthusiastic audience and went through his greatest hits supported by the Symphony Orchestra of Gran Canaria (OFGC) and his band formed of singer Jo Lawry, bassist Ira Coleman, guitarist Dominic Miller, and percussionist Rhani Krija, ending nearly two decades
At the end of the concert, the traditional “peep, peep” more familiar to football fans, sounded in the Estadio de Gran Canaria, while the enthusiastic audience invited the artist to continue his show, he graciously encored performing ‘Desert Rose’, and ‘She’s Too Good For Me’, and finally ending his performance on the island with “Fragile” and “Mad About You.”
Whether accompanied by two musicians or an orchestra of sixty-five the Englishman emanated the same passion and the same magnetism with which rock star has surprised the world music scene over three decades. Backed by 55 musicians of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria he seduced the audience with addictive best sellers, under the cloak of symphonic instrumentation of waiting for him to visit. To the very tight sound and various different interpretations of his music, Sting was
For more than two hours with only a 20 minute break, Sting continued his repertoire, performing legendary hits such as “Roxanne”,”Russians”, “Next To You”, and “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You”, among many others, which were well received by the Canarian audience. The British singer, at nearly 60 years old, displayed huge energy throughout this eagerly awaited concert in the Canary Islands. He demonstrated his skills on the guitar during “This Cowboy Song” and “End Of The Game”, among others. Symphonicity - a pun on the title of the last LP from The Police, “Synchronicities” - emerged as a recording project and was converted successfully to a tour. The difficulty posed by a tour of these dimensions, which could have been a very expensive undertaking with an orchestra, was solved using local formations who were sent test scores months prior to his arrival. “Every Breath” got the crowd up on its feet, singing along to this much loved ballad.
Sting continues his 2011 ‘Symphonicity’ tour, in Granada and then Catalonia over the days that follow.

World Championship of Pozo very well, but also know each other very well, for they are twins! Daida and Iballa Moreno have dominated women´s windsurfing for the last decade and are genuine Gran Canarian legends. It is not the first time that they have come head to head in this prestigious final.
World Championship Comes to Gran Canaria...
Windsurfing
Its equivalent in Formula 1 is Monte Carlo, in Tennis it´s Wimbledon. For the windsurfing world, the event that everyone is waiting for is Pozo Izquierdo and it is right here on our island... Renowned for its difficult conditions and the reputation for its filmscript-style surf contest play-outs, Pozo Izquierdo has had its foot (well, right up to the knee actually) in windsurfing history over the years. Home to the most successful windsurfer of all time Bjorn Dunkerbeck, current female world champion Daida Moreno, past champions such as Marcos Perez, and “wonder kid” Philip Koster, our local scene is not short on legends and local heroes, past and present. Canarian Vs. Brit: Dario Ojeda took down British sailor Robby Swift in day 5. Swift opened the heat with a perfect double forward loop, however Ojeda’s high risk wave riding and clinical jumps paid off allowing him to advance into the next round. Ojeda went on to be placed 3rd in the event overall.
The largest wave score of the competition made an appearance in heat 50: Victor Fernandez Lopez versus Dario Ojeda. Fernandez Lopez caught the set and took that as his opportunity to put an end to Ojeda’s rampage, landing an enormous backside 360 on the steepest section of the wave and then turning straight into a shaka, then a frontside turn. The judges awarded Fernandez Lopez with straight ten’s for his exceptional sailing. On the sixth day of the competition the event flags were actually ripped to shreds by the relentless Pozo wind, wear and tear was high on the equipment. There was a quiet air of nervousness amongst the world´s best sailors as the conditions before the final show down were heavy, even by their standards. With the strongest winds and the largest waves
forecast for the final day of competition, the competitors were anxious to hit the water and kick off proceedings at 9am. Head judge Duncan Coombs announced that the format would remain the same; the heats would be twelve minutes long with the best three jumps and the finest two wave rides counting towards their scores. The competitors were well aware that they would have to sail to the edge of their ability to outperform their opponents as nuclear winds gusted well over 40 knots. Men’s final This climax of the event brought out a real crowd on the beach, all of them waiting to see the best guys in the world battle it out in world class conditions. It can’t get any better than this! Philip Koster opened the heat with a double forward loop, which was quickly matched by Fernandez Lopez’s own. The sailors then went about upstaging each other with a series of radical maneuvers. Disaster struck for Fernandez Lopez when his board snapped after a monster back loop. However, good friend Francisco Casas Garcia sailed new equipment out to him to keep him in the fight. Koster, however, took advantage and continued to land his astounding tricks. Then the big one… In the build up to the event, there was a lot of talk about who was going to pull the mystical triple loop (almost unheard of in competition). Philip Koster had been hyped up to be the man up for the job and did not fail the crowd when, to a crescendo roar of cheers, Koster threw himself into a triple loop sending his equipment flying. As he didn’t land it, the move gained him no points but the work was done and Koster had earned enough points to secure himself the victory. He said later “I feel amazing, I couldn’t feel any better. The heat was really fun, the conditions were a little different in Pozo today but the wind was really strong. I was on my 3.7, I tried a pushloop forward and crashed really hard and hurt my knee, I also tried a triple at the end and crashed that but overall it was a brilliant final.” Women’s final As if scripted by a Hollywood writer, the women’s final was fought out by two local girls, who not only know the waters
Both displayed an overwhelming level of control over their equipment in the ballistic winds but it was World Champion Daida who edged out over her sister to claim another Pozo title. She later said “It was a really fun final and I’m looking forward to Tenerife, I landed a really nice aerial on the set wave and a tabletop pushloop; I also managed to waterstart out of a double forward so I am really happy.” The 2011 PWA Pozo World Cup Men’s results 1st Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine) 2nd Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North / MFC) 3rd Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC) 4th Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) 5th Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC) 6th Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) 7th Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde) 7th Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra)
The 2011 PWA Pozo World Cup Women’s result 1st Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) 2nd Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) 3rd Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) 4th Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) 5th Silvia Alba Orozco 6th Evi Tsape (F2 / North) 7th Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North) 7th Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North) So this evening, although the winds remain, these travelling pros are all leaving, getting packed up for the next leg. Whilst Pozo is technically just a stop on the tour calender, many pros, particularly the Gran Canarians, are already looking forward to Pozo 2012 as this spot and its incredible conditions make it one of the most popular events on tour. There is nothing quite like Pozo Izquierdo!
