A Whale Tale

Image © Bård Ove Myhr

Have you seen this tail?

For both locals and visitors alike, to the bristling fishing port of Arguineguín, it is a central landmark used to guide one another to the various places of interest throughout the town. For many it is an unexpected delight on the costal road linking Maspalomas to Puerto Rico, passed by thousands of people every day, few stop to admire its magnificent form. It has been very much taken for granted for over a decade, and not until it was recently fenced off to allow important renovations to proceed have many ever questioned its origins.

live

This iconic piece was designed and constructed by Emilio Mosquera (known locally as Buddhi) and Miguel A. Ruano, who as a team are responsible for a whole series of well known public works throughout the Mogán area, including sculptures created for the main roundabouts on either side of The Whale’s Tail, both the spiralling selfconsuming serpent at Patalvaca and the iconic Fisherman gathering nets, which once graced the main Arguineguín eastern entry road, though has since been moved down to the old sea wall on the way to the harbour, near Plaza Negra.

Miguel is a ceramist and Emilio is a sculptor, and this winning team have been commissioned repeatedly to create pieces of art that today define the areas in which they are placed, areas which until relatively recently were simply undeveloped, arid, rocky ‘nowheres’ and due to the last 20 years or so of development have now become burgeoning cultural communities with a real need to find a sense of self and of identity. It is Mosquera and Ruano, humbly serving their communities and working behind the scenes, who have helped to realise and achieve this again and again.

Steve wanted to donate food and clothing to help Canarians affected by the recession and we were happy to put him in touch with the local food project. The community action team is made up of people who are active in their community and aims to bring you information on various groups and individuals who are making a difference for individuals and families less fortunate than themselves. Many expats and retirees feel the need to do something useful; "to give something back to the community" is a phrase we often hear. There are so many positive people out there who have a little extra time and energy, or can spare the price of a meal for someone who needs a helping hand. Bill saw a piece in TCN about the Centre for the Homeless in San Fernando, CAIPSHO just before Christmas and offered his help. We were

Second-hand Market Arguineguin Every Saturday morning there is a market run jointly by TARA animal protection and the Neighbourhood food project. Many other organisations have stalls there too. Disadvantaged families are given a free opportunity to exchange donated goods for muchneeded cash. Others pay a small fee for a stall to sell their own handicraft or no-longer-needed articles. A great place to pick up a bargain and help someone at the same time. Many of the local support groups network at this market. If you need information on a volunteer group, look for the stall displaying The Canary News and someone there is bound to know someone who knows someone…

Several works by Emilio Mosquera and Miguel A. Ruano, can be seen throughout Mogán. The Whale´s Tail rennovation is almost complete and it should reopen later this month

The Whale’s Tail was inaugurated by Mayor D. Antonio Santana Flores in 2001, and according to Emilio the sculptor, it was conceived as a symbol of various ideas, including Arguineguín’s little known past as a whaling hub for industrial processing. The first attempts to bring whaling here at the end of the 18th century, more often than not ended without success, those mammals who frequented these waters were large and powerful, ably avoiding capture by the men who, in their small ill equipped open boats, risked their lives to try and land them. But sure enough, with the rise of the American republic throughout the 19th century, so came the long distance Whalers from the rapidly growing US fleet, bringing to bear their superior vessels and man power to dominate these precious animals. The carcasses were processed locally and on board before being shipped home across the Atlantic to make all manner of items from lamp oil for illumination to soaps, paint, and varnish. In the century before plastic ´Whale bone´ was highly prized in the manufacture of various household items due to its durability; it was invaluable for making commodities as diverse as collar stays, buggy whips, and children’s toys. Its flexibility even caused it to be used as springs in early typewriters. As the US republic flourished, so did its voracious appetite for street lighting and the multitude of items from which the whale was a primary source, and so the US whaling fleet travelled far and wide, including it seems to our little Arguineguín Emilio himself has been resident here for 30 years and is originally from Galicia. His grandfather though was an Irishman, and Emilio still sports the wispy red locks of that race in a loose but neat ponytail. He decided to stay, like many others, after falling in love with Gran Canaria and of course the unbeatable weather. He now works for the education department of the Mogán municipal council in

La Ballena Cola Arguineguín, but remains first and foremost an artist and a sculptor His sculpture, like many public projects on the island, over the years has suffered. Damage from sea air, from water, condensation and oxidisation caused parts of The Whale’s Tail to crack and break and it was only going to get worse. So Emilio asked for permission to renovate the landmark. He and a small team have worked hard over the last few months to repair the damage and provide a new outer shell to help prevent future problems. Now, he says, it is closer to the original plans and a few changes have been made with the water system so that now the water flows from the tips of the tail to stop the damage that was being caused to the main structure. They have added 2 wave shaped water pools to the garden section and will also be planting more flowers and changing the stones at the sculpture’s base. The outer Sculptor Emilio Mosquera (known locally as Buddhi)

surface has been replaced with a black ceramic mosaic that was laid by hand, piece by piece. You can see now how the sun and the moon glisten beautifully from it. The Whale's Tail is a cherished symbol and a landmark in Arguineguín and throughout Mogán. It is very important to the locals and Emilio was gratified and touched to receive many open offers from locals to work for free if help was needed to restore it. What greater sign could there be of a cohesive community caring about their surroundings. Asked as to the meaning of his various works displayed throughout the county, he talks of symbols of continuity and the history of Arguineguín, of universal images recognisable throughout the world, of fishing and whaling and of the sea, its life and, it seems, he points to those elusive mementos of a time long past linking us to a time to come in the future. The Whale’s Tail (La Ballena Cola) can perhaps be seen as a thoughtful nod to the fleeting elegance of that most powerful yet gentle Leviathan, the unknown, before each of us it travels below the visible surface, and behind whom we are compelled to hang on with all of our might, harpoons and lines committed, less than helpless in minute open vessels, able to do no more than simply witness our own triumph or demise, as we speed on, without concept of time, velocity or direction; save that, what lies beyond our vision goes long ahead of us and that the way it chooses is the way we too must go, until our connection to it is either broken or consummated. The prize is uncertain. One thing is for sure, through the municipality of Mogán's commitment to cultural references for the people, and its support of local art, we are all the richer; as creativity is allowed to flourish, so do whole communities, old and new. Perhaps Emilio puts it best when he writes "The roads that link the people’s art unite souls." Timon .:.

GC1 Puerto Rico to Mogán Motorway opens March 16th

The Canaries lead foreign overnight stays in apartments

The tunnels of the new 6.1Km section of the main GC-1 motorway between Puerto Rico and Mogán is just about complete. After many years of campaigning and more than 4 years of work it is expected to be put into service on 16 March. The project was awarded by €111 million and begun in began in February 2009 and will be completed at a final cost of €146 million. It will also include a an exit to serve Taurito. It will now take just thirty-five minutes from the airport to go to the picture-postcard fishing village of Playa de Mogan. The extension of the road across the barranco of El Lechugal, now terminating Gran Canarias primary highway at the Puerto de Mogan GC-200, halving the distance from Puerto Rico and reducing the risks involved in driving on the GC-500 coastal road, a winding clifftop road prone to landslides.

In January The Canaries lead the number of overnight stays of foreigners in apartments with a growth of 1.4% and an occupancy rate of 78.4%, followed by Valencia with an increase of 2.6%. In total there were more than 2.9 million overnight stays with an average stay of 10.28 days, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination for this type of apartment, with about 1.1 million overnight stays and an occupancy rate of 87.7%. The areas with the highest number of overnight stays were San Bartolome de Tirajana, Mogan and Arona. Nationally, the overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites and rural tourism) exceeded 4.7 million in the month of January, which represents a decrease of 0.1% over the same month of 2012 .

The Canary Islands’ Minister of Health, Brígida Mendoza, last week that the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit at the Maternity and Children’s Hospital of Gran Canaria will, from April 1st, have their own surgeon who specializes in congenital heart disease.

The City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Oceanographic institute have released the rights for use and reproduction of the eight diving maps of the city and made them available on their web sites www.LPAvisit.com and www.oceanografica.com, so they can be freely used by divers and companies around the world.

The minister explained that following the resignation of one of the surgeons, it was necessary to recruit of another. The job was advertised nationwide as there was no suitable specialist in the archipelago. After receiving several applications it was finally decided to hire a congenital cardiac surgeon. As of April, when the new specialist’s contract begins, the unit will again have its full complement of three surgeons.

Manufacturers, Sports Federations and Rally Organizers have been struggling for decades to avoid the environmental impact that rallies cause in the places where they are held. This impact is known to many as the ‘ecological footprint’ and to try to compensate for the damage that it may cause, the Organizing Committee of the Rally Islas Canarias, in collaboration with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, has programmed a tree planting on Sunday, 17th March. This event is open to all people linked to the Rally, including drivers, co – drivers and public. All volunteers will be welcome on Sunday morning before the opening of the Rally’s big week. Those who wish to take part in this activity will be invited to plant a tree in order to redress the balance from environmental damage they may be caused by the activity.

The simple aim of this initiative is to better position the city at the forefront of innovation in the promotion of diving on the basis that currently ”very few” destinations have this type of map using the latest technologies to provide “accurate” reference pages for international divers.

confer indefinite possession. Only until the rightful owners are interested in recovering their property will she have the right to live there. So until your parents, who are the owners, ask a Magistrate’s Court (not the family court that decreed the divorce) to return to them the property legitimately owned by them, the family court judgment will stay in force until a recovery order compels the ex-daughter-inlaw to leave the flat.

Assistance to the owner’s meeting of a few owners Parents´ flat My ex-wife still lives in the apartment we lived in when we were married, which belongs to my parents, because she was assigned it by the judge in the divorce decree. What rights do my parents have to regain their flat lent to me for my marriage? Your parents can now go to a magistrate’s court (juzgado de primera instancia) to request repossession their flat. Parents who hand allow their children to occupy a property, while starting a new married life, do so out of generosity to help them to move forward and in no expectation of divorce. If there is a separation, the property’s owners have the right to regain possession. The assignment of the flat, in this case to the daughter-inlaw by a family court is a temporary assignment and does not

Can just four proprietors agree actions that affect all 54 proprietors in our communidad? Yes. If the general assembly is convened and the entire agenda of that meeting communicated to all proprietors. Meetings of owners committed to record, along with notification of the decisions taken so that they can be, if necessary, challenged. Everyone is expected to attend these meetings in order to avoid situations where just four neighbours decide important issues that will affect everyone.

Marriage between persons of the same sex. Could a new law, passed in the future, annul marriages between persons of the same sex? Yes, conceivably a new law could be enacted that dissolved marriages between same sex partners, but as the law currently

stands that is simply unlikely to happen, because the state would then potentially have to compensate all people concerned for both economic and moral damages produced by this legislative amendment.

Paying for travel by credit card Is it true that if you pay for a trip by credit card you are entitled to a better terms on insurance? Some cards come with a life insurance policy that covers damage, injury or losses incurred while travelling under a third party contract. For full information on cover available to you, you should contact your card provider.

Complaint forms I filed a claim form against a store that failed to comply with the appropriate standards. Do I have the right to receive some money from the fine imposed on the store concerning the contravention? No. The fine is intended to dissuade the company from infringing the rules and simply goes into government coffers. If you want to recover lost money or to be compensated for damage the company has caused, you should seek compensation from an arbitration tribunal or bring your case before a magistrate’s court (juzgado de primera instancia).

Mervyn King.

After much talk at last we hear that Moody’s, the rating agency, downgraded the UK’s sovereign credit rating by one notch, from AAA to AA1. What impact this will have upon the UK, we are not sure although it could be that all this talk has been factored in. However whilst the pound did weaken against both the dollar and euro the loss is certainly something that the Labour party will jump on. The pound had been in retreat for a couple of weeks, with one or two surges recovering ground, but it was always short lived. Another consideration for the weaker pound came surprisingly from Bank of England minutes showing that 3 members voted in favour of additional QE and one of those was the Governor, Mr Mervyn King. With inflation running at

2.7%, and an expectation that it will increase before it gets better you start to question what will happen when the new governor, Mr Carney, takes over in July. Add this to a shortfall of £7bn and a lack of new anticipated revenue from the sale of 4G then the poor old treasury has been dealt another blow. With further corporate losses and tax revenues likely to drop away you can understand why the two other credit agencies have their reviews on standby. Thankfully unemployment has fallen in the UK and now stands at 7.8% however with increased pressure on consumer spending and imports (petrol and food) becoming much more expensive, the UK must look on the bright side and try to export more whilst the

Ok so what is happening in the eurozone? Italy has been at the polls and whilst we await a clear result thankfully Cyprus now has a new president willing agree to the terms laid out for them to receive the much needed 18-19bn worth of euros. The European Central Bank has just reported that fewer banks than expected have taken the chance to repay loans at cheaper rates and have indicated that of the 130billion euros expected, only 61.1 billion will be paid back. I wish my bank would adopt the same policy when I borrow... With the Eurozone Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), covering manufacturing and services, dropping to 47.3 in February from 48.6 in January, this points to another quarter of contraction for the monetary union. The index for manufacturing slipped to 47.8, with a deeper decline only averted due to strong export performance in Germany. The gauge for the service sector meanwhile dropped to 47.3

from 48.6, with domestic demand weak across all regions. A big worry is France, the second-largest memberstate has not been performing too well, leaving Germany shouldering much of the burden in the battle against the Eurozone recession. Thankfully both Italian and Spanish 10 year bond yields are not causing concern with rates around 4.4% for Italy and 5.3% for Spain well below that damaging number of 7%.

has had a difficult task as the March deadline loomed bringing in spending cuts of around $85billion, unless he was able to agree to a much broader budget with the House. With uncertainty being shown by The Federal Reserve, whose current policy is to buy $40bn of mortgagebacked securities per month until the labour market improves substantially, it seems the US also has some issues to address.

Spanish Lesson 75

Language

Sound Spanish: Popular expressions

Few expressions that we pepper our conversation with by Theresa Coe translate directly into Language Exchange Group (LEG) co-ordinator Spanish. For example ‘cheer up!’ is ánimo! (from the verb animar, to animate someone). Similarly, when you feel down, you say estoy bajo/baja de ánimo (I´m low in spirits: bajo for a man and baja for a woman). ECHAR (to throw/pour) pops up in quite a few expressions:

Echar de menos a alguien (to miss someone) Te echo de menos: I miss you ¿Puedo echar/te una mano? Can I lend you a hand? and deberías echar un vistazo: you should take a look, or ¿Puedo echar un vistazo? Can I take a look? PASAR (to pass, to happen) is used a lot too: ¡Pasa! When called out, means ‘come in!’ (Literally: pass!) Tranquila, no pasa nada: relax, it´s okay (lit: nothing happens) ¿Qué pasa? With a happy tone of voice means what´s going on? (LIT: what happens), but with a worried tone translates as: ‘what´s wrong?’ You´ll also hear: ¿Qué pasó? (what´s happened/what´s been going on?) ¡No te pases! This has two meanings, either: don´t overdo it (take it easy) or don´t overstep the mark (watch it!) – again, tone of voice is crucial to convey your meaning. DAR (to give) is used loads: It scares me: me da miedo (meh dah meeYEH-do: ‘me it gives fear’) It saddens me: me da pena It makes me laugh: me da risa It´s all the same to me (I don´t mind): me da igual And finally: ¿Qué más da? Who cares? (lit: what more gives?) ¡Vaya! Yes, exclamations without swearwords or blasphemy DO exist in Spanish. I like ¡Vaya! (well, fancy that!) You can add extra words to change the meaning: ¡Vaya día! What a day! Or ¡Vaya mujer simpática/antipática! (what a nice/nasty woman). Vaya, vaya….well, well….

¡Qué pena! What a shame!

¡Qué fuerte! Blimey (as in: that´s a bit much! Fuerte means strong but is used colloquially to describe extreme situations) I think so…I hope so! Expressions like ‘I think so’ and ‘I hope so’ are a bit different in Spanish too. Creo que sí means I think so (lit: I believe that yes) or creo que no for ‘I don´t think so’, while espero que sí/espero que no translate as: I hope so/I hope not. ¿Hay confianza? When you know someone well, there is trust between you: hay confianza. (‘EYE con-feeYAN-zah’). Spanish people use this expression a lot. Tener confianza means to have confidence. For example: no tengo confianza en él (I don´t trust/have confidence in him). Or maybe you want to have more confidence to get by (‘defend yourself’) in Spanish: quiero más confianza para defenderme en español. Vocab for letters and emails To a close friend, (un amigo íntimo) you might start with Querido Juan, or Querida Juana (‘Dear John’). Note that the ‘o’ changes to ‘a’ if addressing a woman. ‘Querido/a’ is also a term of endearment, meaning dear one/ darling. You´d perhaps sign this note ‘love, Peter’: Cariño, Peter. Again, ‘cariño’ (never cariña) is used affectionately, and would translate as darling, or honey, though it literally means ‘affection’. In a more formal note, you could address the person with Estimado Señor/Estimada Señora (Dear Sir/Madam) and you might sign off ‘Atentamente’ (Yours sincerely). Alternatively, ‘best wishes’ is a nice way to end an email: (atentos) saludos. Saludos literally meetings ‘greetings’ so if you want to send your love to someone, you can ask ask your friend to ‘saluda a Maria’ (‘say hi to her’). LEARN FOR FREE ONLINE: Spanishdict.com This wonderful online dictionary and translator also has a ‘learn’ option on its toolbar. Offering an interactive free course with weekly lessons from a certified American tutor, there are 60 videos to work through, with audio recording technology to help practice speaking, and grammar instruction with the chance to check your progress.

¡Qué feo! Commonly-used expressions with qué (what) often use adjectives differently than we would, for example:

Language Exchange Las Palmas: now four mornings a week

¡Qué asco! Yuk!/how disgusting!

Twitters from The Atlantic

The Unsuspecting Expat by Barrie Mahoney

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher & school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer & author

A story about a Swedish couple, Mona and Erik, who have visited Gran Canaria 70 times in the last 46 years and recently received an award from the island’s government, caught my attention this week. This couple’s story will jog the memories of many expats on the island, as well as expats across the world, as to the reasons why they have settled in a particular destination. For this 80-year-old Swedish couple, the draw of a welcoming, healthy and warm climate, as well as tennis and long, leisurely evenings spent with good friends has ensured their return to their favourite destination time and time again. Indeed, the couple regard Gran Canaria as their second home. I remember this feeling so well. Many years ago, my partner and I arrived for a one-week holiday on the island, and immediately felt at home. I still remember the dread of returning to the UK and the deep longing of wanting to remain on the island forever, as I was forcibly propelled up the aircraft steps for the dreaded flight back home to the UK. A few weeks later, we returned to the island again, and again. Each year, wherever our holiday plans took us, we would always ensure that we returned to the island for as many visits as we could afford. Eventually of course, it was a deep longing to find work and to make our permanent home on the island, which seemed impossible at the time. However, hard work and good fortune eventually brought us to our favourite destination. I know of many people who have a deep sense of longing for a particular destination. It may be Spain’s Costa Blanca, the South of France, Portugal’s Algarve or maybe Thailand. It is almost as if we feel that we belong in a certain place rather than where we currently live through an accident of birth. The symptoms are easy to spot and we have many friends who seem to have caught this particular disease. It usually begins with a deep sense of longing to return to a particular destination, and the feeling, which is very hard to explain, that you are almost being drawn there. Regular holidays are just the

start, and it may be that the ‘holiday romance’ repeated time and time again with a particular destination is all that is required. No commitment, no ties, just a sensuous flirtation and a brief affair.

However, if this ‘holiday affair’ evolves into several visits each year, staying at and visiting the same favourite places, eating in the same familiar restaurants, regularly collecting local magazines and newspapers “Just to see what the cost of housing is over here”, the unsuspecting expat should be extremely careful as these are just some of the early symptoms of the unsuspecting expat. The danger signs are very real when they begin regularly looking at the property advertisements in newspapers and magazines. This usually extends quickly into peering longingly into the windows of estate agents, or possibly going inside to ask a few questions. Once they find that perfect spot by the beach, in the mountains, by the lake or wherever they may seek their own personal paradise, they are hooked. The best thing to do is to finally admit that they have caught the disease and just do whatever it takes to make it happen and begin to live their dream. Recognise the symptoms? Although our Swedish octogenarian couple maintain a home in Sweden and visit the island regularly for holidays each year, it is clear that they are islanders in all but name. Mind you, Erik also pointed out that they come from Scandinavia where they live about 24 degrees below zero ... and it is very cold. “Believe me,” he went on to say, “here we have a wonderful climate with a very friendly and nice people.” I guess that with temperatures that cold there is a major incentive to escape to the sun.

So, what is it about? The intentions of these beach cleans are not just about tidying the beach, there are many other things we intend to highlight… Clean the beach + Surfing Social Event: It is always a fun event, nice place to meet people, do something good for our environment and ocean, enjoy the atmosphere and “after clean” BBQ and hopefully, surf permitting, catch some waves! Highlight a Plight: Every year we focus on different plights that may go un-noticed otherwise. This year we look at the importance of not only keeping our beaches clean, but WHY and HOW we can reduce our plastic consumption. This year we are talking about the birds from the island of Gyre and how, astonishingly, dispite being hundreds of km from the nearest populated coast, they are dying due to the ingestion of plastic debris from the water. Plastic, even if it is well disposed of by us, has an uncanny knack of getting free… and once free, the only thing to trap it are bushes/trees or water… How does that affect us here? Well, any plastic on the beaches (or even the roads) combined with our climate of high winds means that plastic bags get airborne easily and only stop when it gets trapped to the first thing - usually a bush, tree or the ocean. Even if we are responsible and dispose of the plastic, how do we know that it is going to end up in the right place? How many times have you driven past the big garbage sites in Las Palmas and Juan Grande on a windy day and seen whirlwinds whisking plastic into the air? This plastic does not break down for a long time (see diagram x) and will easily arrive back on our beaches, ingested by fish, birds or sea mammals. “Evolution of legislation” We control our future legislation and it is ley de vida that this changes over time. Think back to something which, in the day and age was perfectly acceptable but with today´s consciousness/science seems ludicrous that it could have occurred. For example, asbestos in ceiling insulation, heavy metal levels in drinking water and the use of Thalidomide to treat morning sickness in pregnant women. In the past, there have been evolutions of legislation as human kind has noticed the errors of their ways. We here are promoting the next one – plastic bags. So our job of cleaning this beach on the 24th March will help A LITTLE towards our beach being clean, but if the publicity helps to make people more responsible about a) how they dispose of rubbish and b) cutting down on their use of plastic, then this will be our most successful aspect of the event J In further articles we will publicise the ways possible, also we would love to hear your ideas: How would YOU reduce your plastic consumption? Send us your ideas an comments, no matter how crazy they may sound! ..

Could do better!

Never again!

Poornima Indian restaurant is nestled inbetween an array of bars and other restaurants, and you would not be the first to walk past. However, if you take the time to stop, and enjoy a meal at this gem in the crown of Indian restaurants you will not be disappointed. I love Indian food, and have been to many on the island, some have been excellent, and others missing the essential taste of india. I am pleased to report that Poornima is an authentic Indian restaurant with plenty to offer. The moment you walk in, you are greeted by friendly, knowledgable staff, who are there to ensure that every aspect of your meal is enjoyed. Drinks were ordered, and poppadums served, with a selection of dips that helped the decision process of what to order. The menu is extensive, easy to follow, and allows you to select your choice of meat, alongside a sauce. There are many vegetarian options, Food: and you will spend some time debating what to eat. I choose pakoras to start, and a traditional bhuna as my main, both were delicious and served with the perfect side of rice. The other people in Service: our party were equally impressed with their choices, and plates were cleared quickly. Throughout the meal, the waiter was attentive but never pushy, and went the extra mile when a conversation was started regard- Atmosphere: ing “hot” curries. A small tasting of Phal was produced for us to try, and although deliPrice: cious, it was fairly mild. If you enjoy very hot curries, you will need to specify this to your waiter, who will be happy for the chefs to add more Other: spice. We ended the meal with their speciality Indian ice cream, and complimentary drinks, all of which were enjoyable. This is one Indian restaurant that I would recommend, and will definitely be returning The staff are excellent and a credit to this restaurant again in the future.

“Calm Waters” is the meaning of the word Arguineguín. It is derived from the language of the Canario Guanches, the generally accepted name given to the indigenous peoples of our Paradise. The coastline on which the ancient fishing village of Arguineguín nestles is, as the name implies, blessed by sublimely gentle weather. Thanks to its strategic placement in the lee of our mountainous island, this charming pueblo is protected from the prevailing north-northeast winds that otherwise bluster down the east and west coasts. The southern location of Arguineguín possesses, in point of fact, some of the most dependably serene seas and mild climate anywhere on the planet. Since ancient times (some estimate 2000 years and more), Arguineguín has been a hub for fishing. Calm waters in the deep Atlantic beckoning marine life and equating to premium fishing conditions. While fishing has been an essential food source for many generations of Arguineiguínians [wow! -ed.] today the southcoast of Mogán is known to foreigners for its big game sport fishing. However, Arguineguín remains the home of one of the largest fishing fleets in the Canary Islands. These colourful, old world boats, still handcrafted from local lumber, carry handmade dragging and circular basket nets. These are manually dropped along the coast before dawn, marked with buoys, and retrieved on the

13 12

homeward bound journey each day. It is a rich and beautiful living tradition. It is hard work, delightfully charming, and, sadly, not competitive what with the five-mile long nets hauled behind giant steel trawlers from all around the world which scour and devour our waters. The vaunted fishing skills of the famed Canarian fisherman represent a dying art, ill-equipped to compete with plundering modern day vessels. Still, this local fishing village is modestly subsidised through tourism and government and remains responsible for the daily fresh fish caught in our calm waters and served in our eloquent waterside cafe's and restaurants. And therein lies the heart of our “Best Kept Secret”. All are welcomed to visit the port marina and observe the daily operations of the boatyard as fishing boats arrive with their precious cargos at start of day. There is a surprisingly large variety of fish to enjoy “just off the boat”, in the markets and on the menus throughout the village. From English to Norwegian to Spanish and Canarian, the various cuisines featuring these fresh caught Canarian fish are nothing short of spectacular. So when you are next visiting Arguineguín, take time to wake up and smell the…fish, caught in the same manner it has been for hundreds of years. Calm Waters are a rare treat, in this ever faster world of bustle, but you'll surely not be able to forget Arguineguín in a hurry.

The Unexpected Farmer

The Unexpected Farmer

Wardrobe malfunction

After a day on the beach (yes I do leave the mud and the chaos occasionally) I realised that I still had to pick the last of the mangos for the market. With this in mind, and stupidly thinking it would be a quick job I decided that this job could be done in flip flops, shorts and a bikini top. This proved to be a huge mistake, much to the neighbours amusement.

Now fruit picking is not as easy as you may think, and it is never a case of simply wandering though the tress, slowly picking the fruits off the trees, as they are never all the same height. You need to be mastered in the art of contortion, and know how to use a fruit picker. The fruit picker is a basic pole with a bag on the end of it, which sounds straightforward, however, you need to be able to position this and convince the fruit that it wants to be in the bag. On a normal day I allow myself plenty of time to pick the mangos, which results in mild cursing, and 60% of the fruit ending up where it is supposed to be, however, on this occasion I was hot, rushed and not in the mood to be in an orchard speaking sweetly to a mango. I got on with the task in hand, and was filling the crates quite happily, when our neighbours begun to shout and wave. Now this happens quiet often, as they think we are mad. We have discovered that we are the local entertainment, however, I don't really care, and love to wave back and smile. This worries them more, and will often cause them to wander off back into their houses. However, today they didn't go anywhere, and continued to wave, which became annoying rather than funny. Now my Spanish is not brilliant, and they know this, so often hand gestures and charades are played to communicate. as I stood watching the old guy grabbing his chest, I wondered if he was having a heart attack...then the penny dropped and I realised that my left breast had in fact slipped from the very small bikini that I had chosen to pick fruit in, and was on full display to the crowds! At this point I grabbed my mangos, shouted gracias and delved deeper into the orchard, to fix the wardrobe malfunction, and wonder how long I would be the talk of the village! LET’S MAKE TIME TO STAND AND STARE Holidaymakers

often write post cards to friends and family back home. Before I came here to live, I once received one such which said “Plenty of sun, sea and sand... pleasure and leisure.... no stress.... regards to you and all fellow slaves in the workplace!” In today’s world of “life in the fast lane”, often it’s the “looking forward to a break” that prevents our developing “hurry sickness!” High levels of stress are known to contribute to many of our health problems. We are advised to take stock of our “manic” lifestyles, monitor stress levels, and make necessary adjustments. It is not easy juggling work, leisure, and exercise. I like the following story, which demonstrates what wonders we may miss ... because of busy, busy, busy-ness: A man sat at the Metro Station and started playing the violin. It was rush hour on a cold wintry morning. He played for 45 minutes, while over a thousand of people passed by, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes into playing, a passerby slowed his pace for a few seconds to listen, but glancing at his watch hurried on. Many others did something similar. A little later a woman threw some coins into the violin case, and scurried on. The only person who to take any real interest in his playing was a child of 3, who pulled at his hurrying mother's hand, clearly wanting to stop and listen. Several other children did likewise. Their parents, without exception, hurried them along. In the end only 6 people stopped to listen. During that 45 minutes the “fiddler” earned just 30 dollars. When he stopped playing no–one took any notice... he didn't bow and no-one applauded. The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most famous musicians in the world, playing some of the most elegant pieces ever written by Bach for violin, on an instrument worth 3.5 million dollars! Two days previously a Joshua Bell concert sold out...seat prices averaging $100 each. Joshua playing incognito at the subway was organised by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment concerning peoples’ priorities ...their perceptions and tastes when set in a common-place environment at an “inappropriate” hour. The study asked these questions; Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it?

Welcome to our mad world! We’re farming by experiment and laughing along the way. Come for the eggs, stay for the life lessons! Who would have ever thought farming could be such hard work?!

Food for Thought

Do we recognise talent in an unexpected context? A possible conclusion from this experiment may be: if we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the best music ever written; WHAT ELSE ARE WE MISSING? Long before the days of laptops, i-pods, and mobile ‘phones etc; Welsh pedlar and poet, William Henry Davies wrote the following popular verses. The purpose was to ask how, in a fast paced society, the lack of leisure time may adversely affect us ....this in 1911!... before stress was invented? He explores the idea of just standing still, simply to observe natural events as they unfurl in God’s amazing Creation. More popularly known as “Stand and Stare” here it is. "LEISURE" What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. In the days before I joined the Senior Moment society, I belonged to the Senior Management set! I hate to admit it, but I think that I may well have been far too busy then to stop and listen to Mr Bell. In my usual state of preoccupation when travelling to work, I probably wouldn’t even have registered the musician....never mind the music! That makes me feel rather sad. To make amends, now that I enjoy my well earned leisure time, I’m off to the mountains this week- to just STAND and STARE...oh, and LISTEN. To breathe deeply until I can smell and almost taste the aroma of nature; her beautiful blossoms and glistening grass. To listen to the music the birds are making. To gasp at the breath-taking views and scenery from the top of Roque Nublo......see you there....if you can spare time! Kay Owen. March 2013

March 2013 - The Canary News

TARA@TheCanaryNews.com

“The Tail of The 4 Amigos” A sad tail to tell, or, in this case, sad tails: Four dogs suffering a life of misery - no access to shade in the blistering sun, tethered with chains less than a meter long, no daily exercise, insufficient food, not enough water, and no medical care whatsoever. Theirs was a cruel world until one lucky day quite by accident two strolling tourists spotted the dogs across a field and became aware of their dire circumstances. Lisa (Danish) and Rene (Dutch) had been exploring Gran Canaria. Their concern for the dogs meant that they could not turn away, forget about what they had found and continue on their journey. So began a series of visits, hauling bags of food on foot and gallons of good, clean water on a daily basis to their newfound friends. The dogs were not aggressive and soon showed gratitude and delight in the nourishment and affection offered. Friendships were formed and the idea of having begun their good deeds only to return home leaving their new canine buddies to suffer the fate of their past became unbearable. Having read about the TARA animal welfare group in “The Canary News” Lisa and Rene reached out for advice and help. TARA contacted the appropriate authorities. Jackie (Canadian), a former TARA vice president and long time animal advocate, met with the couple, a member of the town council, and an employee of Seprona (the animal welfare adjunct of the Guardia Civil). Their meeting was at the site where the dogs were being kept. Also present was the man who had been keeping the dogs and was responsible for their condition. It was agreed that the dogs would be examined and treated by a veterinarian. Telemascota Vet Clinic sent Dr. Ana (Canarian) to the scene. She determined the dogs were malnourished, dehydrated, covered with fleas and ticks and the resulting infections, not micro-chipped, and obviously not immunised against rabies and canine diseases prevalent in the area. In particular, the largest, now called Doc, was in deep trouble; His life in immediate danger. At 30kgs he was 15kgs under his ideal weight and suffering from open, dangerously infected gashes and pustules, a result of untreated injuries. His hearing was threatened due to rancid, festering ear mite infections. His ears themselves were actually rotting away, maggots eating his flesh. Doc’s collar was impended into his neck, having grown into his skin. The other dogs were not in such grievous condition, but all needed sustained medical treatment. Lisa and Rene agreed to pay for the treatment, micro-chipping, immunisations, and neutering while continuing to feed and water

the dogs until rehabilitation was complete. The overarching problem remained: What would happen to these dogs when Lisa and Rene finally returned home? The prospects were not acceptable. Jackie and her fluent Spanish continued to help with ongoing meetings and the offending man was finally convinced to give TARA four of the six dogs on-site. A beloved (British) TARA supporter and supreme foster home provider, agreed to take the rescued dogs into her finca family farm. No small task with the care taking, medical treatment (regular trips to Tenesoya Vet Clinic), exercising, training and socialising necessary for all four dogs. Dr. Javier (Canarian) reports each of the dogs is making solid progress to full recovery. The whole project was dubbed The Four Amigos. TARA set out to oversee the rehabilitation until new, permanent homes could be found for each. TARA set-up an internet donation pledge effort, and began the process of finding wonderful homes for each of the amigos. Eva (Belgian), a champion of pet rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming, loved the project and jumped in with her own considerable efforts to gather pledges. Lisa and Rene have returned home and left TARA with a donation to help fund the project. They are following the progress of The Four Amigos through the TARA Facebook page. To everyone’s pure delight, the couple has decided to adopt Doc when his rehabilitation is complete. He was not only the most damaged physically, but because of his size and age, his life expectancy is rather limited. At eight, the truth is, Doc’s time is running out. Given the normal span of a very big dog of his race, ten to twelve years is considered usual. Lisa and Rene know that the rehoming of such a dog is not easy, and they want to be certain Doc lives out his years in a state of perpetual loving care and security. Brava! to this wonderful couple who reached in during a simple holiday and made a lifesaving difference for The Four Amigos. By the way, TARA volunteers continue to monitor the remaining two dogs on-site with the promised assistance of the police. So now this sad tail is beginning to wag. When loving permanent homes are found for all, it will be a happy tail to tell. Our international community has rolled up our collective sleeves to make a difference. If you would like to contribute to the effort – to pledge a donation, to provide a temporary foster family, or adopt an amigo for life, contact TARA Animal Respect Association on Facebook. We’ll be glad to have you as a friend walking hand-in-hand toward a better day. B. Paradise!

A Girl Named Sioux

In the classic country western hit, “A Boy Named Sue,” Johnny Cash sings Shel Silverstein’s poem lamenting the difficulties of life growing up a boy with the name of Sue. Our tail turns the story on its head marvelling at the sudden ease of life when a girl is tagged with the name Sioux (as in the American Indian Sioux Nation). Our Sioux, is a lovely young shepherdess found collarless, abandoned, scared and thirsty, in the Sioux City parking lot. The rescuer was none other than our own beloved community champion, animal advocate and Managing Editor, Edward Timon. This young man not only talks the talk and prints the print for animal welfare in Paradise, he also walks the walk. To date (and counting), Eddie’s publication has helped identify many new homes for abandoned dogs and cats, and he has also personally adopted two homeless felines and two love birds, as well as placing a remarkably humanised baby goat, called Rico The Kid, in the newly established Sioux City Petting Zoo which he has committed to help develop over the coming weeks, months and years inside Gran Canaria’s oldest theme park and piece of living history. Are there any volunteers who’d like to help with that project? Sioux (the dog) was swept up lovingly (and promptly named) by Ed-the-Ed who discovered how friendly and well behaved she is, taking her on a makeshift lead, fashioned from his own leather belt, to the Snoopy Veterinarian Clinic in San Fernando for the standard assessment process: Micro-chipped(no); health (excellent); age (less than one year); weight (13.5kgs.). Armed with all the necessary info he brought her to the TARA centre in Arguineguín (The Best Kept Secret in Paradise)! There using the TARA social network, a clarion call was zapped out through the stratosphere: placing Sioux in a temporary

home with details and photos sent to complete the beginning of this happy tail: Rescue (thanks, Eddie); Reunite (has anybody lost their precious pooch?); Rehabilitate (physical and psychological well-being – for TARA this includes micro-chipping, international passport, rabies protection, neutering, medical treatment as needed, and a foster home); Rehome (seeking placement in a secure, stable home for life). TARA’s 4 R’s TARA employed kennels for years, but no matter how hard volunteers strove to provide a quality interim, a kennel was still living in a cage and it broke our hearts. So three years ago, our focus fixedly moved to Foster Parenting: finding people willing to look after abandoned dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens during their (usually brief) wait for their lifelong family to step forward. (Interested in fostering, please contact TARA without delay) So there you have it. This tail is wagging, but not yet fully told. If you love dogs and have a hankering for a gentle, loving, small German Sheppard mix, let us introduce you. “My name is Sioux. How do you do?”

The Perfect Wedding Tips

with Bernadette Garside

Wild West Weddings Bernadette Garside, Founder of

The Perfect Wedding Company The Sunshine Wedding Specialists

Location, Location, Location… Choosing your dream-wedding destination should be one of your first considerations when planning your wedding and one of the most important factors. Luckily Gran Canaria is blessed with many spectacular wedding locations, from chic beachside hotels, to country villas, beach clubs, through to city boutique hotels - the choices are endless. More and more venues are now offering their services to the growing wedding market in Gran Canaria, and the latest venue to jump onto the wedding bandwagon is the popular Sioux City theme park, situated in the aptly named Cañón del Águila or Eagle Canyon, near San Agustín.

A Wild West Theme Park! This award-winning theme park is more commonly known as a family-friendly Wild West attraction, and is frequented by tens of thousands of tourists every year. The park’s Commercial Director, Isidoro Quevedo sums up the park when he states, “Sioux City is quite unique.... there’s no other place like it on the islands” and in fact it is unique in Europe! Founded in 1971, the park was initially a Wild West themed movie set, and was used in the 20th Century Fox film ‘Take a Hard Ride’ (1975) with Lee Van Cleef and Jim Brown. Interestingly, soul legend James Brown inaugurated the main auditorium in 1987. Gloria Gaynor once played here too.

This quaint chapel is situated at the end of Main Street, a dusty road snaking its way through Sioux City, lined with authentic Western movie buildings, and the odd lone mule, taking a rest from the midday sun, an atmospheric and perfect setting for your wedding ceremony. In keeping with the Wild West theme, the wedding groom can choose to ride up to the Chapel on horseback, or can be dragged, true western-style, by a lasso wielding cowboy - a wonderful, memorable way to begin your wedding celebration! A horse and carriage is on hand to bring the bride and her entourage to the Chapel, whilst delightful Country & Western music fills the streets, adding to the magical ambience.

Why Choose Sioux City? Choosing Sioux City as your wedding location will certainly make you feel like a Star! The atmosphere is electric, you and your guests will be surrounded by a riot of exciting street shows, where Cowboy’s and Indian’s pit their wits during crazy shootouts and exotic showgirls dance the Can-Can in their brightly coloured costumes! The highlight of any marriage blessing at Sioux City has to be the ceremony itself conducted in the authentic Wild West-style wooden Chapel.

Let’s Chow Down Cowboys! After the ceremony, the celebrations continue into the small hours. You can choose from a sizzling BBQ of delicious local fish or meat, fresh salads and accompanying grilled vegetables and side dishes, or design your own menu from the wide selection of options, all served beneath the warm Canarian night sky. Then finally dance the night away beneath the stars to live entertainment, including line dancing and a popular DJ playing your favourite tracks, both are guaranteed to get your party in full swing! We spoke with local couple Nerieda Sanchez & Juan Medina, who held their wedding at Sioux City in 2012, Nerieda recalled with a smile, ‘our wedding was totally unforgettable, both for us and all our guests!” Whether you choose an ‘all guns blazing’ western-themed wedding, or are simply looking for an original and unique venue in which to say ‘I do’ then Sioux City is a perfect location for your dream wedding.

Gloria Palace Thalasso SPA - Stay in shape Most tourists who visit Gran Canaria think simply of sunbathing and swimming. The range of beautiful beaches is plentiful. But for an alternative to the beach I can honestly recommend the Thalasso Spa at Gloria Palace. There is one each at Gloria Palace San Agustin and Gloria Palace Amadores and I visited both places in order to form an opinion. I am a trained esthetician and love experiencing different spas around the world with both a curious and a critical eye. Gloria Palace Thalasso SPA is one of the largest spas I’ve found. Though I’m Swedish, I find it can be a bit chilly here in the winter and have spent many days in the heated water in San Agustin. If you have back problems or have trouble relaxing, here is an alternative to the sea that can get even the most tense body to loosen up. It's easy to recuperate and find new energy. All you need to bring with you is the desire for a change of scenery. You will be provided with a bathrobe, slippers, towel and a nifty plastic cap for reasons of perfect hygiene. First, you wash yourself down in cool water before you take a dip in the heated seawater. There is a route through 33 different zones which visitors are recommended to follow for maximum effect. There are massage areas for every part of the body. Finally, you can choose (if you dare) to take a refreshing dip in a cold plunge pool (16 º C) finishing off in a pool at a perfect body temperature of 37ºC, or why not do it the other way round? Parts of the pool are outdoors allowing you to enjoy various little pleasures in the heat of the sun's rays.

man chansa.

The differences between Sweden and Gran Canaria I was asked about the differences as a woman living in Gran Canaria compared to Sweden. What I love about Gran Canaria is that they seem to be happier with themselves than people in Sweden are.

Thalasso SPA Gloria Palace – Håll dig i form

Visitors must be 15 years or older. Younger children can be left in good hands at the free playground just around the corner.

The beach can be crowded with fat, thin, strange and beautiful people all in the same place and everyone seems to be completely relaxed to their bodies. I feel it is men who have the greatest demands in terms of body image. Many of the girls are overweight but you notice immediately that they appear to love themselves. They also are happy to go topless anywhere on the beaches no matter what shape they are. This is actually quite like Sweden was in the early 80s before certain types of taboo took over. People do not seem as vain here as they are in Sweden. This may be due to the heat. It be pretty pathetic to be ultra aware of fashion and clothing trends in a place where much less clothing is required due to the climate. There is quite a big focus on clothing in Sweden, but here people probably focus more on skin care and hair care. I've noticed big differences in how I am treated as a woman, compared with how guys are treated. Despite my main responsibility being the running of my online blog portals, our contacts here often take it for granted that they should be talking to a guy, when it comes to crucial decisions. I do feel, however, that the guys often show a lot of respect when they know that I'm always very busy. Other differences to Sweden There's an often used expression "mañana" which means tomorrow. Things can be very rather too "mañana" here. If they say they will fix a drain "mañana" it could be in a few months. However if they need to turn off the water, they might do so without warning. In traffic, it can be crazy. There are lanes where you can both come off at an exit, but at the same time under the same conditions may be used to join the main carriageway. It seems as if they built the roads long after the buildings, instead of planning them beforehand. Signs for a turn-off might be set only at the exit itself, so sometimes you have to take chances! Although 70-80% of Gran Canaria’s economy is driven by tourism, there are EXTREMELY few people, it seems, who can speak English. I also feel that people try less to reason logically. Even saying words just slightly wrong here, and it's as though they can not be bothered with the effort of trying to understand and so just shrug instead. It may of course just be uncertainty. So for better or worse, I feel that those who come from Gran Canaria are less structured than we Swedes. It feels like they live more for the day. If something breaks it is just as likely that it will be fixed temporarily as being fixed properly, which can often lead to a bigger problem later on. Gran Canarians help themselves and talk loudly. Families with children do not have to think so much about clothing expenses and it's easy to entertain children here because they can be out playing all year round and can always visit the beach. FATAGA

Fataga This really is an under visited area that people do not think of often enough when they decide to visit the sunny paradise of Gran Canaria. If you have seen the Swedish film Sällskapsresan you may recognize this small picturesque village. It took a year before I discovered the beautiful scenery in the mountains and knew immediately that I had missed something. Instead of going on expensive excursions, you can for just a few euros take a local bus there. It's very smooth. In about 30 minutes from Playa Del Inglés you have arrived in Fataga. There are lovely cosy restaurants, that I recommend you try if you want to eat real Spanish food and there are also some small, charming shops, a church and art galleries to visit. Make sure to be in plenty of time at the bus stop for your return journey, as the buses are not quite as punctual as we Scandinavians are accustomed to. In the winter, it might be good to have with a spring jacket or a thicker shirt then as it can be a little cooler here. In the summer it will be usually very hot. After all there are at least four different climate zones on this island so it might be good to think about that on any excursions away from the coast.
