£64bn Funding Package for Councils “Bitterly “Disappointing”

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUHC) has announced the provisional local government settlement 2024/25, confirming that the government will provide no additional funding beyond that already planned. The County Councils Network, (CCN) which represents England’s largest councils, said that county authorities will be ‘bitterly disappointed’ by the announcement. CCN are warning the absence of additional funding leaves its councils with ‘no choice but to implement more severe reductions to services and to levy higher council tax rises’, while ‘an increasing number of local authorities will struggle to deliver a balanced budget next year’. The provisional settlement offers almost £4 billion more to councils - an

increase of 6.5%, overall, a funding package worth over £64 billion to support councils in England to deliver frontline services has been announced by the Levelling Up Secretary. The Funding Guarantee introduced last year will be maintained to ensure every council in England sees at least a 3% increase in Core Spending Power before any local decisions are made around council tax. This decision has been taken in recognition of the pressures being faced by local authorities despite the recent drop in inflation. And to continue to support councils providing essential adult and children’s social care services, we are making available £1 billion in additional grant funding for social care in 2024-25 compared to 2023-24.
