Make This a General Election for Social Care... Political Parties Urged
EDITOR'S VIEWPOINT
Welcome to the latest edition of The Carer Digital!
Editor Peter AdamsUrgent Need for Social Care Refor m Amidst Election Uncer tainty
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s surprise announcement of a General Election on July 4 has sent shockwaves through the political landscape As we brace for a tumultuous campaign season one glaring issue remains conspicuously absent from the discourse the ongoing crisis in adult social care
Despite the urgency of the matter none of the main parties have outlined concrete plans or policies to address the multifaceted challenges facing this vital sector Which is a massive disappointment, since I was hoping to include them in our lead article today!
The adversarial nature of election campaigns exacerbates the problem for social care
Political parties vie for our votes by touting the superiority of their policies while discrediting their opponents This often leads to the dismissal of sensible proposals that might otherwise garner broader support In the heat of electoral battle even the most pragmatic solutions can be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency
The social care system s many problems demand long-term sustainable solutions that transcend the electoral cycle These solutions require collaboration, if not consensus, across the main political parties Without such cooperation the sector will continue to suffer from short-term fixes and policy neglect The adversarial approach not only hampers meaningful progress but also ensures that social care remains a political football subject to the whims of changing governments
History has shown that social care can easily become collateral damage in a partypolitical war of words Past elections have demonstrated how contentious funding proposals can provoke public backlash, making social care a toxic topic for politicians
Consequently they often avoid the issue until the impact of neglect becomes so severe that intervention is unavoidable This cycle of avoidance and crisis intervention sets back the prospects for genuine reform leaving the sector in perpetual limbo
As we approach the upcoming election it is imperative that we demand more from our political leaders thanks to social media and other modern day forms of communication they are in the spotlight on the court of public opinion more than ever
The social care sector needs decisive intervention and a commitment to long-term, sustainable solutions This will only be possible if political parties put aside their differ-
ences and work together for the greater good
The stakes are too high for social care to be ignored or mishandled any longer The millions of individuals who rely on these services, as well as the dedicated professionals who provide them deserve better
This election is an opportunity to advocate for the systemic reforms that are so desperately needed Only through collaborative effort and a shared vision for the future can we hope to address the deep-rooted issues plaguing our social care system
The time for transformative change is long overdue and it’s time for political leaders to rise to the challenge and deliver the sustainable solutions that will secure the future of adult social care
Once again I would be interested in your views in the lead up to the general election I will be writing this week to the main parties to see if they would like to take time out of their busy schedules and share with our readership exactly what their intentions are and it would be good to put some of your views too!
Once again we are delighted to share with you some wonderful uplifting and heartwarming stories from care homes throughout the UK and as we lead up to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings we are hoping to include a dedicated feature, so please do share with us any stories from residents who played any part in this momentous event - it would be an absolute privilege for us to publish them!

Make This a General Election for Social Care... Political Parties Urged
(CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER)
PROPER REFORM
We have endured 30 years of neglect betrayal and broken promises Now we want to see the manifestos and hear what they intend for social care
“And we must grasp this rare opportunity to get the country a cradle to the grave service it deserves
When the candidates come to our doorsteps we must ask them what they intend for social care and not let them off with weasel words or vague promises
We want proper reform and we will hold them accountable for what they promise
Some 1 6m people can t get care, there are 152,000 social care staff vacancies and providers of homecare and residential care are leaving the sector every day
The ICG says it is time for the Conservatives to break their silence on what they propose for social care and for the other parties to expand on what they have said so far Labour has so far promised better pay for the workforce while the Liberal Democrats promise free personal care for some a Carer s Minimum Wage and greater support for unpaid carers
FUNDING GAP
Social care charity Guild Care met the news of a general election on 4th July with a mixture of hope and scepticism Social care is under significant pressure following decades of under-funding, unfairness and inequality This is exacerbated by a fragmented and stretched health and local authority environment
Alex Brooks-Johnson Guild Care CEO said “None of the main parties are raising the issue of social care
The problem of the funding gap which is getting wider every year is going to get worse The impact will be that people without significant personal wealth will face a future of inadequate care
He added “Social care is a difficult challenge to overcome but answers are possible with the right leadership innovation and collaboration We don t expect the Government to have all the answers but would call on all parties to pledge to address the considerable issues in social care if they win the election ” In 2019 the Government pledged to reform social care and the resulting report was dropped In 2023 a new commitment was made to reform social care through the ‘People at the Heart of Care Paper’ These reforms were shelved shortly afterwards although not after considerable time and money was spent on preparations
In addition reviews of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) have also been halted leaving many vulnerable people in desperate situations as Local Authorities struggle to meet demand These issues need to be addressed as swiftly as possible and Guild Care joins many other social care charities in calling for all parties to raise their game in pledging to take action
Alex added “We and our social care provider colleagues would only be too delighted to help shape some
plans to address these key issues We understand the problems well and have connections with the people who are impacted every day by the continuing delays to the long-overdue reform of social care funding ”
NEGLECTED SECTOR
Professor Martin Green OBE Chief Executive of Care England says: “For the adult social care sector this general election will be an opportunity to reflect discuss challenges and priorities and consider alternative visions of what the future may look like For too long, our sector has been neglected and the can kicked down the road With this election that must come to an end It s time for political parties to finally put adult social care at the top of the agenda and bring about the generational reform and investment we so desperately need ”
“MUST HAVES” FOR THE NEXT GOVERNMENT
The National Care Forum has called upon all political parties to ensure that adult social care is a central part of every manifesto, citing that for decades, governments of various political persuasions have failed to bring forward and commit to ambitious reform and the last few years have been no different with either delays to announced reforms or scaled back ambition
Demographic changes in our society, growing unmet need and a difficult workforce environment mean this is a policy area that must no longer be ignored they say
Adding that the full potential of adult social care to enable people to live to the full to unlock economic prosperity and combat social-economic and health inequalities is largely an untapped resource and one which needs to be at the centre of conversations about reform
The NCF are calling on all political parties to:
1 Think social care first-ensure that people care about social care like they do the NHS and understand its central role in joined up health and care for people
2 Improve the pay terms and conditions of the workforce-care is intrinsically skilled and valuable and must be remunerated to reflect this
3 Invest in people, not profit-adult social care should be for people not profit
4 Create an economic growth strategy for adult social care-social care is a large employer contributing £55 7 billion to the English economy making it an essential part of the national
5 Enshrine rights, fairness and choice for people in the National Care Covenant-co-produce and set out clearly the mutual rights and responsibilities of citizens families communities and the state
To date there has been little mention of adult social care among the main parties Labour has said committed to the introduction of a ‘national care service for adults’ services over the next ten years but has yet to add any clarification and in a recent policy paper the Conservatives set out a wider reform agenda putting ‘people at the heart of care’, however this is yet to feature in their 2024 manifesto
Building an International Worker Strategy in Care
By Chris Harber, Head of Immigration, Boyes Turner (www.As recruitment continues to be an overwhelming challenge for care homes, international workers remain an essential part of the solution Some scene setting in 2022 99% of care workers sponsored for work visas in the UK were from non-EU countries The top countries of citizenship for care workers using Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) in 2022 were India (33%), Zimbabwe (16%) Nigeria (15%) and the Philippines (11%)
The staffing crisis in the UK care sector has been attributed to multiple factors including: A lack of long-term workforce planning • Brexit leading to a loss of staff coming from the EU Concerns over pay and job pressures due to increasing staff shortages
The crisis is particularly acute now due to persistent understaffing across health and social care, posing a serious risk to the safety and wellbeing of people who use these essential services STATE OF PLAY IN THE SECTOR
Other contributing factors to the prevailing care crisis include: New legislation impacting providers: New rules to cut net migration and tackle visa abuse are now in force as part of the UK government s plan to bring down unsustainable levels of legal migration This means that care workers are restricted from bringing dependant family members with them when they move to the UK and the Home Office is hoping that in making the UK a less attractive destination this way it will lead to a reduction in the number of new care workers arriving in the UK
Care providers in England acting as sponsors for migrants are also required to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to crack down on worker exploitation and abuse within the sector and the Home Office has significantly ramped up compliance action against care providers that have a Sponsor Licence
The narrative here is very much be careful what you wished for when the Home Office relaxed the rules on recruiting care workers from overseas there was a critical shortage of care workers in the UK however it now very much looks like the Home Office went too fast too soon
Sponsorship process in the care sector: Sponsorship of workers through the Health and Care Worker visa route can only be undertaken by a business that is genuine and legally operating in the UK The business must apply for a sponsorship licence with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Once granted the sponsorship licence the business will need to assign a certificate of sponsorship to each worker they are recruiting As referenced above on increased compliance the whole process is getting more and more difficult For example if a care provider submits a request to increase their allocation of certificate of sponsorship the Home Office will always request a significant amount of supporting evidence to process the request, in the past these requests were rare
Eligibility of non-CQC care firms to sponsor migrant workers: Care providers who were sponsoring workers in exclusively non-regulated activities (and therefore not required to be registered with the CQC) before the rules change should be able to continue to sponsor these workers including for extensions to their visa on those terms But they will not be able to sponsor new ones
ENSURING ACCESS TO AN INTERNATIONAL EMPLOYEE POOL
There are key ways care home providers can ensure they have access to an international employee pool As a provider you can:
Build a recruitment strategy specifically for international recruitment: This requires extensive planning and a long-term commitment to provide resources ongoing training and pastoral support to recruits
Adhere to the Code of Practice for International Recruitment: Providers must familiarise themselves with and ensure they adhere to the Code of Practice for International Recruitment and the requirements of the Health and Care Worker visa
Be aware of your sponsor duties and conduct regular audits The Home Office is performing more audits than ever, so it is critical that care providers are confident they will be able to pass an audit Boyes Turner provide bespoke audit & compliance training, including mock Home Office audits where we play the role of a compliance officer and assess your compliance with your Sponsor Duties

The Care Allowance Has Been An Absolute Disaster; Sir Ed Davey Says
On a recent Voices of Care podcast – a channel dedicated to celebrating the health and social care sector – Sir Ed Davey leader of the Liberal Democrats and MP for Kingston and Surbiton, called on the next government to once and for all reach a cross party consensus to reform social care including properly honouring the role of unpaid carers, calling the current Care Allowance an absolute disaster Census data from 2021 showed that more than 5 million people in England and Wales over the age of 5 were providing unpaid care in 2021; although research from Carers UK in 2022 estimates the number of unpaid carers could be as high as 10 6 million(Carers UK, Carers Week 2022 research report) Without their contribution the social care and indeed arguably the whole healthcare system including the NHS would collapse Speaking on the podcast Ed reflected on the role of family carers a group often neglected in mainstream commentary Evidence abounds of the role that unpaid carers have on the health and social care system and the wider economy
Commenting Ed states: “We clearly need to look after our care professionals much better than we do but I think care professionals would be the first to say ‘let’s also look after the families and the loved ones and the neighbours and the friends who do the vast bulk of caring I m not talking about childcare I m talking about looking after disabled people, looking after elderly relatives, looking after spouses We need better training for and structures in place to support unpaid carers At 12 years old when I was caring for my terminally ill mother and administering morphine I wish I had <<some>> training ” Research from Carers UK and Sheffield University

Now Is The Time To Champion Digital and Data Sharing In Care
By Julie Tyas, Registered Social Worker andAs we all know there are significant challenges facing the care sector and they have been well documented in recent reports and articles However with the General Election now confirmed and health and care being a top priority for all the political parties, it is encouraging to see the Local Government Association’s (LGA) recent report The Care Act 2014 Ten Years On from Royal Assent’, which reviews the impact of the legislation and what needs to happen next to address these pressing challenges
The report rightly recognises the historic underfunding in the sector which has only partially been addressed by short-term grant funding and the use of local taxation And it makes a strong case for the importance of longer-term, sustainable investment going forward – citing the estimated uplifts calculated by the Health Foundation to meet the growing demand
Gathering better data sets and improving the use of data shar-
ing also feature strongly in the recommendations It highlights how these improvements can deliver better outcomes and value for money and help move towards more preventative care provision that can reduce the demand and costs of care and NHS services
Whilst there have been significant moves to achieve this over the last few years – for example with the publication of the Care Data Matters strategy – the LGA report rightly calls out the need for continued improvements However, unfortunately, there aren’t any references to the role of technology in achieving these goals in the report itself
DIGITAL & DATA SHARING
Given how effective digital tools are in improving the flow of information within and across care settings (and the wider care continuum), it is perhaps a missed opportunity There are residential and domiciliary care
providers across the country that are embracing technology not only to improve the collection analysis and sharing of data but to improve service efficiencies compliance and the quality of care provision
For example Bay Care (a domiciliary provider in Devon) introduced a fully integrated digital system that covers carer scheduling electronic care planning electronic MAR mobile working care monitoring billing and finances As a result they have a real-time picture of what is happening with their services enabling them to identify concerns and patterns with their citizens individually and as a community The coordination between the point of care mobile app monitoring dashboard and alerting features also helped drive up compliance to outstanding levels Plus it streamlined their back office saving £75 000 annually with an additional £3 000 saved each month on postage and stationery costs
By having a dashboard of all the data points across their community they can also quickly and easily export and share this for the reasons set out in LGA’s report - for example with their colleagues at the Integrated Care Board, and even at a national level, to pinpoint ways to shift to better demand management and preventative care It can also help overcome the patchy and inconsistent communication between the different health and care settings that can lead to duplication of efforts and/or missed opportunities
ACKNOWLEDGING INNOVATION
Whilst technology isn t mentioned in the overarching report it is thankfully acknowledged in some of the LGA s associated articles including the opinion piece from Dr Jane Townson OBE (CEO Homecare Association) Jane highlights how providers have embraced technology despite challenges such as the spending on care falling by 40% in real terms
And with the LGA championing new funding commitments from the next government now is an opportune time for them to advocate the role of data and digital Specifically by pointing to proven examples such as Bay Care and helping providers maximise the resources readily available Plus heeding the suggestions in Jane’s article including the importance of outcomes-based commissioning that focuses on efficiencies and prevention (which will ultimately be underpinned by digital)

Future-Proofing Care – Care
England Spearheads Coalition of Industr y Experts
In ITV’s latest Tonight Programme, Care England revealed the extent of the social care crisis in local authorities where underfunding from central government has compromised their ability to adequately fund social care
In response Care England has today announced the launch of Future-Proofing Care a new report delivering innovative solutions and turnaround strategies to sustain independent adult social care providers
Care England s 2023 Sector Pulse Check report produced in partnership with Hft highlighted a concerning trend: 43% of adult social care providers were forced to close parts of their organisations or return contracts to local authorities due to financial pressures last year in 2023 Even more alarming is the revelation that 56% of smaller providers seriously considered exiting the market last year due to these financial strains
Without root and branch reform of the way central government invests in social care through local authorities this figure will only rise In the absence of such reform care providers need immediate support to manage ongoing pressures which will have a real impact on people’s lives
Successive governments have pledged to fix social care yet the sector remains in an extremely precarious state Care England and the organisations contributing to this paper have taken action to provide immediate support to the sector But with yesterday’s announcement of a general election It is now incumbent upon the incoming government regardless of party to implement meaningful change and offer comprehensive long-term support to the entire sector
Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England, says: This is not simply an industry concern; it is a societal one
Potential closure of essential services will have far-reaching consequences impacting the most vulnerable members of our society In a time when resilience is not just a virtue but a necessary survival strategy the independent adult social care sector finds itself at a crossroads Faced with unrelenting financial pressures and regulatory challenges, these providers are navigating a labyrinth of uncertainties that threaten their very existence Care England has spearheaded a coalition of industry experts to offer a lifeline to care providers The new report seeks to navigate the treacherous waters of financial vulnerability and operational challenges marking a collaborative effort to fortify the foundation of adult social care in England
Future-proofing Care recognises and explores the strategies available to care providers facing operational pressures From spotting early warning signs to implementing turnaround strategies exploring renovation or financing options and considering management takeovers or exit plans It delivers insightful analysis and practical guidance to equip every care services with the necessary tools and knowledge for making informed decisions and
sustaining high-quality care amidst evolving challenges
Ultimately every care provider will at some stage, need to rely on the solutions outlined in Future Proofing Care This document is designed to stand the test of time and provide universal value for all providers irrespective of their circumstances
You can access the report on the website at https //www careengland org uk/future-proofing-care/
Martin Green continues: “Future-proofing Care is an indispensable resource that will undoubtedly offer a beacon of hope and a definitive path forward promising a brighter future for providers in the toughest of circumstances With the stability of the health and care system at stake providers need to maximise their resilience But ultimately, the buck stops with Government Without urgent action the Government risk being responsible for the collapse of the sector that supports those in most need ”
Bharti Moore Partner in the Health and Social Care team at RWK Goodman says: RWK Goodman s Health and Social Care team are proud to be part of a sector that is so dedicated to providing high-quality care to some of the most vulnerable members of our society We are delighted to be contributors to the Care England Future Proofing Care report
“There are many challenges facing the care sector and smaller providers do not always have access to resources in the same way as larger providers It is essential for the care sector as a whole to come together and collaborate in finding solutions to the challenges This report is key to supporting smaller providers by highlighting best practices and strategies that smaller care providers can employ The report can serve as a valuable resource for smaller providers looking to learn, make informed decisions and drive positive change within their organisations and continue their essential service to their community ”
Andrew Whelan Director of Westcott Care says: “Care England s latest report Future Proofing Care and its initiative to find innovative solutions and turnaround strategies to sustain independent adult social care providers is of fundamental importance to the sector and the lives and well-being of many in our society As the demand for care evolves towards increasingly complex chronic conditions policy and practice must advance in step to ensure a sustainable supply of fit-for-the-future services In the face of considerable adversity from sub-optimal fees spiralling operational costs staffing shortages and an ever-complex regulatory environment it is the smaller independent providers (representing the majority of care services), who are impacted the hardest This initiative creates an opportunity for these providers to band together and discover innovative strategies and solutions for securing their services Westcott Care is delighted to be part of it ”

Labour Accused Of Missing Social Care Opportunity
said that was a serious omission as the two needed to be improved together
ICG Chair Mike Padgham said:
“It is hugely disappointing that again social care has been left out in the cold and we call on Labour to immediately set the record straight and tell us what it will do about the way we look after our most vulnerable Reforming the NHS without reforming social care would be pointless
“Both Labour and the Conservatives are remaining frighteningly quiet on social care and it can t go on We are heading into the second week of the campaign and social care has not been mentioned at all, which is making all of us worry that the politicians are afraid of it or do not see it as a vote winner
“They are wrong 80% of us will need social care in one form or another in our
The country isn t ready for that wave of extra social care demand that is heading towards us and sadly the Labour Party has shown today that it is not willing to say what it will do to cope
“It is time for all of the parties to stop running away from social care and tell the country what they plan to make sure older and vulnerable adults are properly looked after in the future ”
Some 1 6m people currently can t get care there are 152 000 social care staff vacancies and providers of homecare and residential care are leaving the sector In its Five Pillars for Social Care Reform document which has been sent to all the main political party leaders the ICG suggests ring-fencing a percentage of GDP for care creating a National Care Service setting a minimum carer
establishing a task force for reform and creating fair tariffs for services such as care beds and homecare visits
STOP the Active Discrimination of Adults with a Learning Disability Within Social Care
By Ian Pritchard,BEYOND THE BALLOT: PRIORITISING MENTAL HEALTH AND DISABILITY RIGHTS IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION
At last the speculation is over the date has been set and the campaigns have begun 4th July is when the nation will go to the polls and cast their votes to who will run the country for possibly the next five years Regardless of who wins the race to 10 Downing Street there are some clear priorities that as a leading health and social charity care provider we at AFG believe need to be addressed as soon as the die is cast in early July IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT NHS WAITING LISTS
Although there is no doubt that those awaiting necessary treatment need to be seen as soon as possible the NHS waiting list and backlog rhetoric masks the real tsunami that is hitting the NHS – the mental health crisis We know that public mental health resilience has declined rapidly in the last five years – the charity MIND estimates that one in four people will now experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England That has increased from one in six in 2014 according to the Mental Health and Wellbeing in England survey undertaken by the government Or put in real terms an 8 5% increase or a staggering 14 million people today suffering from a mental health condition
And the vector is only going in one direction The new government needs to prioritise mental health services in the NHS and fast It needs to implement clear and quick reform of the Mental Health Act invest more in mental health funding at both a community and in patient services level and increase the capacity of provision to meet demand
ADULTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES NEED TO STOP BEING TREATED AS SECOND CLASS CITIZENS
How to fund elderly care has become the campaigning conversation yet there is a forgotten but just as important group of society that are living with us unseen - the 1 8m adults who are registered with a learning disability and the millions of others who need special care and support to live normal lives
For far too long they have been treated as second class citizens, neglected in funding and prioritisation within social care If the party who gains power come the Summer has one clear focus it needs to bring greater public awareness of adult disability, equity in its funding and fair policies in place that puts those adults needing social care whatever their age upfront and centre of the political agenda For far too long adult social care has been driven by cost rather than being person-centred resulting in those being supported having limited choices about how they can live their lives
Finally as the Chief Executive of an organisation whose aim is to enable those we support to achieve independence, thrive and flourish, we have a duty to ensure those with a mental health or a learning disability have a voice and a vote in this election For all the political parties talk of inclusive and a fair society we still have one that is massively swayed towards the able, that is prejudice against those who need care, where those with disabilities are still lower down the priority list and where their lives are compromised by lack of awareness fairness and equality The General Election gives all the parties an opportunity to make good on the promises and stand up and let those in health and social care be counted as the key part of society they are

APPG And Peers Launch Report Calling
For A New National Carers Strategy
A cross-party group of MPs and Peers have launched a new report calling on all political parties to commit to developing a new and ambitious National Carers Strategy following the upcoming Westminster General Election
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Carers which advocates on behalf of unpaid carers say that developing a new National Carers Strategy would better recognise the significant challenges that millions of unpaid carers are facing and help to improve their health and wellbeing finances and access to care and support
The economic value of the unpaid care that people provide each year in the UK is a staggering £162 billion – similar to spending on the NHS In recognition of the significant and broad set of challenges that carers are currently facing the group is calling for a step-change in the way Government supports unpaid carers
The report highlights the findings of a recent survey conducted by Carers UK on behalf of the APPG on Carers which received over 5 000 responses from unpaid carers and organisations that represent them An overwhelming majority (95%) of respondents strongly agreed (81%) or agreed (14%) that a new cross-Government National Carers Strategy should be developed by the UK Government
The group of parliamentarians wants to see any future strategy to be led by the Prime Minister with clear buy-in and responsibilities for Secretaries of States for all Government Departments that have responsibility for policy relating to the provision of unpaid care It also needs clear roles and responsibilities for other important stakeholders such as NHS England Local Government Association, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, and to work in tandem with organisations who represent carers Vitally any such strategy should be developed and co-designed with current and former unpaid carers
The UK Government has not published a National Carers Strategy since 2008 and there has not been a dedicated cross-Government approach to supporting unpaid carers since the Carers Action Plan 2018-2020 came to an end in 2020
Commenting on the launch of the new survey Dame Caroline Dinenage MP Chair of the APPG on Carers and former Minister for Care said:
I am delighted that we are launching this report today which calls for a new National Carers Strategy to recognise the vital support that families and friends provide on a daily basis to loved ones I am simply staggered by the huge response we received from carers and others to the survey that we held earlier this year; a response that would be worthy of a very well-engaged Government consultation I was very pleased that there is almost unanimous support for a step-change in the Government’s approach to supporting millions of people who do such important work in caring unpaid for their family and friends
“The Government s Carers Action Plan that was published in 2018 when I was Minister for Care provided a very valuable opportunity to improve the support provided to carers Developing a new National Carers Strategy would build on that work and provide a strategic focus to better enable Government to coordinate its support for carers and ensure they get the support they need ” Baroness Pitkeathley Co-Chair of the APPG on Carers and Vice-President of Carers UK said
“The need for a new cross-Government approach to supporting unpaid carers is something that unpaid carers national and local charities and other organisations that represent them have long been calling for

Collaborative Care: Building Effective Interdisciplinar y Teams
Article by Kristine Chan, Clinical Manager, Langdale HeightsIn today s fast-paced healthcare environment the importance of collaborative care cannot be overstated Effective interdisciplinary teams can transform patient care offering a more holistic approach, improved outcomes, and a supportive work environment for healthcare professionals
Interdisciplinary teams are composed of professionals from various fields who work together towards a common goal: providing the best possible care for patients These teams often include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, and other specialists Each member brings a unique perspective and skill set enriching the collective knowledge and expertise of the team
The advantages of interdisciplinary teams are manifold Firstly they promote comprehensive care Different professionals can address various aspects of a patient s health ensuring no stone is left unturned For instance while a doctor may focus on diagnosing and treating a medical condition, a physiotherapist can help with mobility issues, and a social worker can provide support for emotional and social challenges
Secondly, interdisciplinary teams foster better communication When team members regularly share information and insights it reduces the risk of misunderstandings and errors This collaborative approach ensures that everyone is on the same page leading to more coordinated and efficient care Moreover working in a team can enhance job satisfaction and reduce burnout Healthcare professionals often face highpressure situations and having a supportive team can make a significant difference Sharing the workload and responsibilities not only eases the burden but also creates a sense of togetherness and mutual respect
Creating a successful interdisciplinary team requires careful planning and ongoing effort Several key steps can help build and maintain effective teams For a team to function smoothly, it is crucial to have welldefined goals and roles Each team member should understand their responsibilities and how they con-
tribute to the overall objectives Clear guidelines and protocols help in avoiding confusion and overlap of duties
Healthcare is an ever-evolving field and staying updated with the latest advancements is essential Continuous education and training opportunities for staff can enhance skills and knowledge These programmes not only improve individual competencies but also benefit the team as a whole by bringing new insights and techniques into practice
In this digital age, leveraging technology can significantly enhance team collaboration At Langdale Heights we use electronic health records (EHR) and other collaborative tools to streamline communication and information sharing These technologies enable team members to access patient information quickly and efficiently leading to more coordinated care Acknowledging achievements and learning from challenges are crucial for team development We celebrate our successes no matter how small to boost morale and motivation In addition to our regular reviews that identify areas for improvement and address any issues that may arise we also hold team meetings and conduct thorough handovers These practices ensure that all team members stay abreast of ongoing developments This reflective approach not only helps in fine-tuning our processes but also strengthens our teamwork
While the benefits of interdisciplinary teams are clear, there are also challenges that need to be addressed Differences in professional cultures communication styles and work practices can sometimes lead to friction Understanding and respecting the diverse backgrounds and cultures of team members is essential We provide cultural competence training to help our staff appreciate and navigate cultural differences This training fosters a more inclusive and harmonious work environment
Interdisciplinary teams are a cornerstone of modern healthcare offering a more comprehensive and cohesive approach to patient care Embracing collaborative care can lead to remarkable results By establishing clear goals, fostering open communication, encouraging mutual respect, providing continuous training, leveraging technology, and celebrating successes, effective teams that deliver exceptional care can be built

Proactive financial management and strategic planning should be a priority for independent care providers amid a series of economic and societal challenges according to a new industry report
The white paper by Kent Finance in collaboration with The Social Care Foundation and UK and Ireland law firm Browne Jacobson argues that detailed financial modelling and strategic reviews can help businesses to achieve the delicate balance between providing highquality care and maintaining financial sustainability
Titled The future of social care: Navigating financial and regulatory challenges it features case studies of organisations that have transformed adversity into growth opportunities by investing in financial acumen and embracing digital innovation
It is the first white paper to be commissioned by The Social Care Foundation, a cross-party think-tank set up by Dr Robert Kilgour in 2023 to bring positive debate ideas and suggestions on how to reform UK social care
Dr Kilgour who also founded social care businesses Renaissance Care and Four Seasons Health Care said: “Social care businesses have been confronted with a post-Covid ‘new normal’ characterised by high inflation stagnant fee increases higher interest rates and labour shortages
Despite these complex financial challenges there are important steps they can take to position themselves for long-term success in a digitally dominant horizon
This white paper underscores how embracing innovation leveraging data and adopting proactive financial management strategies can enable social care organisations to thrive amid uncertainty, and chart a course towards a resilient and sustainable future
The white paper highlights recent research published by the Lancet Journal showing that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) closed 816 care facilities between 2011 and 2023 affecting 20 000 residents
It discusses how the causes have been the inability of care operators to keep up with increases in operational costs such as energy, food and labour, combined with income lagging behind Other challenges it sets out as facing the sector include an increased demand for services resulting from an ageing population, complexity of care needs, a strain on social care funding, housing and infrastructure challenges and workforce shortages
As a higher interest rate environment affects social care organisations’ ability to access funding, manage

Why AI Could Help Transform The UK’s Social Care Sector
By Lisa Farrell, Business Development Manager,Our health and social services are facing immense challenges including staffing shortages, rising costs, and ever-increasing demands The residential and nursing care sectors are unfortunately no exception However there is great potential for artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to help revolutionise how we deliver social care while easing burdens on staff and improving individual outcomes
The UK government published its National AI Strategy in September 2021, which included a focus on the use of AI in health and adult social care Overall the strategy outlines an ambitious long-term plan to cultivate AI capabilities talent infrastructure and trustworthy adoption across the UK economy and society
Key recommendations from the strategy include scaling up public sector investment in AI development and research, promoting AI literacy for the general public and leveraging AI for public services In hindsight, the report was incredibly progressive considering the impressive developments and strides already made in the field of AI in the past 12 months and it will continue to impact how the country delivers social care going forward
At the National Robotarium we are exploring how AI and robotic systems can support home or residential based caregivers across a wide range of tasks These could include supporting routine cleaning and monitoring duties right through to improving brain function in care receivers by playing memory games or simply being an extra companion when needed
By maximising intelligent systems like AI and robotics to automate repetitive or physically demanding work, nursing and care professionals can focus on providing the compassionate, person-centred care they have been trained for and excel in
The transformative potential of AI in the UK social care sector is becoming increasingly apparent with each passing day At our purpose-built state-of-the-art facility in Edinburgh our researchers are pioneering a multitude of intelligent systems that are evidencing direct benefit to individuals caregivers and social care providers - including those focused on supporting our ageing and vulnerable populations
One such example is FEATHER a collaborative research project between Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh universities, which was awarded £1 1 million from the UK Government by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council This unique data platform helps individuals carers and clinicians to recognise the signs of potential urinary tract infections in care receivers far earlier helping to prompt any investigations and medical tests where needed Data is gathered about the daily activities of individuals in their home through sensors that could help spot changes in behaviour or activity levels like if the kettle is being used much more or less, a change in a person’s walking pace, sleeping patterns or cognitive function
We are also working closely with partners like Leuchie House a respected respite centre to trial technologies that can help individuals with neurological conditions like MS or conditions like dementia, to maintain greater independence From monitoring for cognitive decline to providing mobility assistance after a stroke, these AI-powered solutions can significantly enhance quality of life while alleviating strain on caregivers
By combining sensor technology and robotics, data can be collected over longer periods of time helping to monitor patients and alert carers to when a care package may need to be reviewed The rooms in Leuchie House for example are equipped with voice activated environmental controls, to illustrate the potential of AI in everyday situations Their technology team can also work with individuals to install similar technologies at home giving them and those who care for them more independence
Additionally the National Robotarium has also cultivated a strong working partnership with Blackwood Homes and Care a leading housing association operating over 100 developments across Scotland Blackwood's innovative team is collaborating with us to create AIenabled telecare telehealth and social robot applications that seamlessly integrate mobile interactive robots into their digital infrastructure This allows Blackwood s residents to experience the benefits of socially assistive robots firsthand in their own homes The collaboration with Blackwood’s own digital system means that carers are kept connected to residents helping them become more independent and lessens the need for carers to sleep over, giving them peace of mind that technology is ensuring the wellbeing of residents
The product is delivered through a secure two-way video call The team is also exploring the use of telepresence robots i e robots that emergency responders can control over the Internet as a way to bring a video-call to each room This avoids the need to install cameras in every room which would pose issues of privacy and feasibility
Of course robust testing stakeholder collaboration and building public trust are critical for widespread adoption of new AI and robotics practices At the National Robotarium, we are committed to working handin-hand with care providers engaging staff at all levels to understand their needs and ensure new technologies truly serve their priorities of improved care and optimised resources
As the UK s social care workforce shortage persists AI and robotics also present an opportunity to make careers in care delivery more attractive and sustainable By automating arduous tasks and enhancing workflow efficiency these technologies can help reduce staff burnout while allowing human professionals to focus on the most rewarding aspects of patient interaction
We are entering an era of extraordinary possibilities, where intelligent systems will play an increasingly vital role in residential and nursing care - empowering human caregivers enhancing patient experiences and ensuring more equitable access to quality healthcare for all
The National Robotarium is proud to lead the way in realising this transformative potential and will continue to realise this game changing potential through collaboration, innovation and a steadfast commitment to enhancing human welfare

WEC Calls On Government To Investigate Why Eligible People Are Not On The Learning Disability Register
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) is calling for an investigation into why eligible people are not on the Learning Disability Register
The Register entitles people with a learning disability or autism to receive reasonable adjustments such as support when making decisions and access to an annual health check However the WEC has found that 75% of eligible people are not registered and struggled to convince their GP or surgery staff to register them
MPs on the cross-party committee warned that people with a learning disability and autistic people face significant health inequalities including an “unacceptable level of premature and avoidable deaths”
In its new report entitled Inequalities in healthcare and employment for people with a learning disability and autistic people WEC concluded “overall care and outcomes too often still fall below acceptable standards
WEC called on the Department for Health and Social Care and NHS England to work with national and local learning disability organisations and charities and the Royal College of General Practitioners to investigate why eligible people are not on the learning disability register and take appropriate action to increase registration
The report recommended the work should include an assessment of the reasons why eligible people who have applied to be on the register have been denied access to it and a review of the existing guidance for GPs to ensure it captures all those who are eligible for registration
The report urged the Government to “radically increase the funding allocated to reducing waiting times for an autism assessment warning: It is clear that current efforts to address the waiting list backlog are inadequate and that the additional funding that has been allocated is far short of what is required ” MPs on the Committee recommended Ministers explain why the number of autistic people detained in mental health hospitals has increased and how it plans to reduce that number and by when Ministers it added should set out the measures it will take to improve access to and availability of community-based
alternatives to inpatient settings including the additional resources it plans to allocate to support this
The report also warned people with a learning disability and autistic people “face the widest employment gap of all people with disabilities and find it difficult to get their foot in the door”
It called on the Government to publish a new disability employment goal based on relative measures and set out how it plans to achieve it; ensure that work to improve Disability Confident and Access to Work includes reviewing the extent to which those policies are helping employers to recruit and support people with a learning disability and autistic people
Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee Rt Hon Caroline
Nokes MP said:
“It is deeply concerning to see that health inequalities continue to be significant among people with learning disabilities and autism including an unacceptable level of premature and avoidable deaths compared to the general population
The Committee heard from people who struggled to convince their GP to put them on the learning disability register and only achieved success once the media and politicians were involved They should not have to reach that point and not everyone will feel empowered to argue their case or have access to such advocacy to assist them The system has to work better to ensure all people with a learning disability have access to good healthcare
The Government has fallen short on its commitment to halve the number of people with a learning disability and autistic people inappropriately detained in mental health hospitals It must learn from previous failings and increase support for community-based alternatives to detention and do more to stop people reaching crisis in the first instance ”
On work opportunities it is vital the Government acts to close the unacceptably wide employment gap for people with a learning disability and autistic people and sets out plans on how to achieve this with specific targets to measure progress ”

NHS Confederation Responds To
Confirmed Date For General Election
As the political parties begin their official campaigning and citizens prepare to cast their votes the membership body for the NHS is calling on the health and wellbeing of the nation to be at the forefront of the new government’s plans
The NHS Confederation which represents all parts of the healthcare system including trusts, primary care providers and integrated care bodies is calling on the political parties to provide much-needed hope for the future of the NHS and to commit to placing the health and care system on a sustainable footing
Priority areas from health leaders include a ban on unnecessary and distracting structural reforms to the NHS for the duration of the next parliament; a 12-month stabilisation plan to get NHS performance back on track; roughly doubling NHS capital expenditure for vital building updates and new equipment a promise to fund the existing NHS workforce plan; and a new cross-government health improvement strategy
Matthew Taylor chief executive of the NHS Confederation said:
“The next government quite literally has the population’s lives in its hands As we head into the election season political parties must remember that a healthier nation is not only beneficial to our day-to-day lives but it supports the safe running of the NHS and wider economy Our evidence shows that every £1 of investment in the NHS returns £4 to the economy in gross value added (GVA)
Since the last election the NHS has gone through its most difficult years with it responding to a global pandemic, growing waiting lists, staffing pressures and strikes, and rising ill health In the face of these challenges its 1 4 million staff continue to deliver their very best for their patients but the road to recovery is long Health leaders are clear on what the NHS needs to thrive and they recognise they also have an important role to play in making this happen including by working even harder to spend every healthcare pound as effectively as possible
We are at a turning point for the NHS and political parties have a choice to make on what they want their legacy to be if they are granted the keys to Downing Street Simply put, the next government’s commitment to the NHS will shape our own health and wellbeing and those of generations to come
THE GENERAL ELECTION DATE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AS:
Independent polling reveals that concerns about the NHS have surpassed worries about inflation to become the most mentioned important issue facing Britain
The latest Spring Budget saw the NHS receive an at best flat revenue settlement for 2024/25 against a backdrop of significant deficits and operational pressures
There are over 121,000 recorded vacancies across the NHS in England and 152 000 vacancies across social care
ONS figures suggest that 2 8 million people aged 16-64 years are not working due to ill health with the cost of labour inactivity due to this estimated to be over £43 billion a year Analysis from the Centre for Mental Health also puts the cost of mental illness at £300 million In England over
Industrial action in the NHS has led to more than 1 4
planned operations and appointments needing to be cancelled or rescheduled in England with the cost of the strikes estimated to be around £3 billion • Despite some progress, the total elective care waiting list in England still stands at more than 7 million The IFS has said it is unlikely this will be reduced to pre-pandemic levels over the next four years
Primary care leaders feel shortchanged by the level of additional investment set out in the GP contract for 2024/25 at a time when patient list sizes are growing and GP numbers continue to fall
The NHS Confederation set out its ‘manifesto ahead of the general election “Building the Health of the Nation: Priorities for a New Government which draws on the insights of health and care leaders across England Wales and Northern Ireland It outlines the changes that the incoming government must make to place our health system on a sustainable footing THESE ARE TO:
Put the NHS on a more sustainable footing with no top-down structural reform in England for the next parliament, and to commit to a short-term stabilisation plan during the first 12 months of a new parliament to help get performance in the English NHS back on track
Increase NHS capital spending and reform how the capital regime operates Specifically in England, capital funding needs to increase to at least £14 1 billion annually a £6 4 billion increase from the current level of £7 7 billion
Commit to fund and deliver the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan for England alongside an equivalent plan for social care
Provide more care closer to home by enabling local health systems to proportionately increase investment into primary care and community-based services, mental health and social care
Deliver a strategy for national health given that most policy that impacts people s health is made outside the NHS As part of this, the Prime Minister should lead a cross-government national mission for health improvement to shift the focus from treating illness to promoting health and wellbeing reducing inequalities and tackling the wider determinants of health and supporting the public to be active partners in their own health

Jersey’s population is getting older With that comes challenges that it must anticipate and address to ensure as many Islanders as possible live independently and with dignity within a community that cares about their wellbeing Most developed economies are contending with the challenges of an ageing population Jersey s digital connectivity makes it the perfect testbed for life-enhancing technology
The number of Islanders aged 65 and above is set to increase by 30% within 16 years (by 2040) including a 50% increase in the number of people living into their 80s and beyond By the age of 65 over half of Jersey’s islanders live with one or more long-term health conditions; by the age of 85 the majority of people have two or more long-term health conditions
Jersey measures just 45 square miles with a population of around 100 000 and offers all the components of a larger country but in a small, campus-like space Jersey is one of the most digitally connected countries on the planet and tops the worldwide broadband speed league table All broadband connections in Jersey are gigabit Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Jersey also benefits from three separate 4G networks island-wide 5G launching this summer and multiple dedicated Internet of Things (IoT) networks making it the ideal testbed for companies looking to demonstrate the effectiveness of cutting-edge technologies
Jersey’s Minister for Sustainable Economic Development Deputy Kirsten Morel said: “In the next decade the number of people aged 65 or more will significantly increase both in number and as a proportion of the
population We are addressing the challenges that this demographic shift will bring for the Island’s health and care systems now As one of the world s most digitally connected jurisdictions Jersey is primed to seize the opportunities that new technologies offer our citizens, enabling Islanders to enjoy life and retain their independence for longer The CareTech Challenge will help us achieve this goal ”
Tony Moretta CEO Digital Jersey responsible for delivering Impact
Jersey said: We have the opportunity right now in Jersey to transform how we support health and care for our older citizens, delivering better outcomes for them by enabling new and scaling technologies that leverage cutting-edge advances Not only will these solutions benefit Islanders but Jersey can be the testbed for these technologies to support older people around the world ”
The CareTech Challenge is calling on individuals start-ups and established organisations to develop and deploy technologies and services that directly contribute to the health independence and safety of Jersey’s ageing population, or benefits carers and the people they care for
Impact Jersey is actively encouraging and supporting international collaboration to bring the world s best ideas to the island
It is seeking technology-based approaches that aid older people to live safely in their own homes help them to stay connected with their communities and to support carers in their roles The technologies must enhance the quality of life for Jersey’s older people and the people who care for them to help them maintain good health and independence and in turn reduce the demand on Jersey s healthcare
Retired Nurse With Four Decade Career Surprises
NHS Staff On International Nurses Day
A RETIRED nurse who spent over 40 years in the NHS gave staff at a Bolton hospital a surprise for International Nurses Day
Doris Mary Coleman 89 began her career in 1956 after completing her nursing education at the United Manchester Hospital School of Nurses
She went on to obtain her ophthalmic nursing board diploma and then passed the central midwives board examination before filling various nursing roles over the following 44 years
She began assisting on the maternity ward at Bolton Royal Infirmary where she was affectionately known as Aunty Mary and later worked in the ophthalmology department Mary eventually rose to matron managing two wards at the hospital before retiring in 1990
Now living at Lever Edge Care Home, in Great Lever, Mary was asked if she wanted to help with a celebration for International Nurses Day
The care home’s activities coordinator, Manny Patel, approached Mary and several other residents to help prepare goody bags for the staff at Avondale Health Centre part of Royal Bolton NHS Foundation Trust
The bags contained flavoured coffees hot chocolate biscuits sweets chocolates pens cards with quotes hand gel lip balms and more
After Mary and her fellow residents took the time to decorate the cards by hand and sign them she joked: I used to be a nurse Where s mine?
Manny and Mary then travelled to the hospital to deliver the bags, which also gave the former nurse the opportunity to reminisce with matrons sisters and members of the community nursing team
She said: Times have changed from when I used to be a nurse In 1956 nursing was different There are new treatments now and advancements in medicine
Mandy Whitelaw, the leader of the Community Nursing Team at the Royal Bolton Foundation Trust was among those to receive a goodie bag
She said: “Meeting Mary was a delightful experience and we truly appreciated her taking the time to visit us
“It was heartwarming to see that the residents also dedicated their time to create gifts for
“One thing that hasn’t changed is the privilege of caring for others and making a difference to their lives ” After meeting several members of the nursing team Mary was presented with a rose and a can of gin and tonic and Manny received a hamper for the care home’s summer fayre raffle
“We hope Mary enjoyed her little glass of gin when she returned It was truly a pleasure to meet her and we are glad that you all recognise the importance of nurses ” Manny said: Mary was delighted to see all the nursing staff in their uniforms especially the matrons’ red uniforms, as she used to be a matron herself

Post-Pandemic, People In The UK Are Living
Longer, Healthier And Richer Lives Report Reveals
New findings by the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) reveal that since 2019 the UK is simply treading water when it comes to healthy ageing
To enable more people to stay healthy for longer, the ILC – UK s leading authority on the impact of longevity on society – calls upon the next government to invest more in preventing ill health and supporting people to adopt healthier behaviours
The good news is that, on average, people in the UK are living longer, healthier and richer lives than before the pandemic
Comparing the latest 2022 data across life span, health span and income with 2019 data, ILC’s analysis finds that, on average, we:
• Live 6 months longer: average UK life span has improved from 81 7 to 82 2 years
Spend 5 more months in good health: average UK health span has improved from 70 1 to 70 5 years
Are richer making around £560 today a year more than we did in 2019; mean average income has increased from £37 485 to £38 045 today
But over this three-year period we ve seen a drop in work span environmental performance and happiness and as a result the UK global ranking on ILC’s Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index remains largely unchanged since 2019 (ranked 14th)
ILC ANALYSIS HAS SHOWN THAT BETWEEN 2019 AND 2022:
We work 6 months less than before the pandemic: our average work span has dropped from 31 6 to 31 1 years
We’re less happy now the UK’s happiness score has dropped 0 5 points from 7 2 to 6 7 points out of 10
• And as a country we are less environmentally sustainable than in 2019 the UK’s environmental performance score has dropped from 81 3 to 77 7
While globally the pandemic has had a significant negative impact on people s life expectancy and the
number of years spent in good health the UK has fared better on a population level However what these statistics don t show are the significant inequalities between people’s health and income – as much as a 19-year difference in healthy life expectancy between the most and least deprived parts of the country
While the UK still does well in environmental terms relative to other countries (ranking 2nd) and even improving in ranking from 4th in 2019 to 2nd in 2022 however the data shows a slide in the wrong direction The drops in work span and happiness are also of concern and could have serious implications for both the health of individuals and the UK’s economy TO BEGIN TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES THE ILC CALLS ON THE NEXT

The Importance of Nutrition and Hydration in a Care Home Setting
By Rob Henry, Head of Culinary Solutions and Complianceassistance with eating and drinking skills as well as the provision of meals
With that in mind, it’s essential that you re not only aware of the food and drink regulations in place but how you can build on these to improve your offering and services within a care home environment
WHAT HAPPENS IF RESIDENTS DON’T RECEIVE THE RIGHT NUTRITION?
With age malnutrition can become more of a concern It s estimated that around 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 are either malnourished or at risk Changes that the elderly go through can lead to things like a
diminished appetite or even a loss of interest in food not to mention health conditions or changing health needs that can also impact the amount of nutrition a person receives
It s important to remember that residents may be a healthy weight but could still not be getting the right nutrients they need Other signs of malnutrition might include things like muscle weakness feeling tired increased falls or even poor wound healing
What’s more older people will find it more difficult to absorb vitamin D through sunlight and so this must be considered in their diet
Similarly older adults can also be a higher risk of becoming dehydrated as they may not recognise the feeling of thirst the way they used to FOOD AND DRINK REGULATIONS FOR CARE HOMES
The Health and Social Care Act of 2008 was brought in to ensure all care home settings registered with the Care Quality Commission and complied with its requirements It’s deemed to be one of the most significant reforms of social care in decades
In particular Regulation 14 states that the nutritional and hydration needs of residents must be met WHAT CARE HOMES CAN DO
With that in mind, it’s important that care homes have the right measures in place to keep residents as healthy as possible when it comes to nutrition and hydration Here are some tips on how carers and kitchen staff can work together to further improve the system in place
• Regular assessments: Every resident will have different needs and so by carrying out frequent assessments you can determine more accurately
whether residents are getting what they need from their current meals and drinks This also gives you the chance to identify issues or changes in requirements and address it accordingly
• Personalised plans: Being able to offer personalised meal plans means that you ll be better equipped to meet the residents dietary requirements
Not only this but it also means that you can meet their needs in regards to allergies, medical conditions and also flavour and texture preferences too This can be critical to ensure an enjoyable mealtime and offer a more encouraging environment for residents to eat and drink
Supervision at mealtimes: This can be particularly crucial if residents have trouble swallowing or eating as you’ll need to support and supervise when necessary However, it can be helpful even for those who don t experience this This is because you can observe and monitor how they are with using cutlery or holding a cup and whether they have any additional needs that you could assist with
Ongoing education: It’s hugely important to carry out regular training and education so that carers can continue to recognise the signs of dehydration or malnourishment It also means they can be better placed to help residents improve their health and wellbeing
Emotional support and reassurance In some cases residents may hold back on eating or drinking because of worries with incontinence It’s absolutely pivotal that carers can give the right emotional support and are able to reassure residents on this topic

LAUNDRY SOLUTIONS
The Importance of Proper Laundr y Practices in Care Environments
Laundry is one of the major cleaning and hygiene challenges for care homes
For care homes maintaining impeccable cleanliness is more than a routine task; it is a vital responsibility The elderly and those with compromised health are particularly susceptible to infections making rigorous hygiene standards essential Professional laundry systems are engineered to meet these stringent requirements ensuring that every piece of linen from bed sheets to residents' clothing is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized
Unlike domestic machines commercial laundry systems are designed to handle large volumes with consistent efficacy They maintain precise water temperatures and use specialized detergents capable of eradicating harmful pathogens This level of thoroughness is crucial in environments where the risk of infection is high MINIMISING INFECTIONS AND CROSS-CONTAMINATION
Infection control is a critical concern in care homes Pathogens such as MRSA E coli and norovirus pose significant threats to residents Professional laundry systems play a key role in mitigating these risks by incorporating advanced features designed to prevent cross-contamination Barrier washers for instance have separate compartments for dirty and clean laundry ensuring that contaminants are contained and do not spread to freshly laundered items
Programmable wash cycles in these systems can be tailored to different textile types and soil levels, optimizing the disinfection process Furthermore innovations like ozone technology enhance sanitization while allowing for lower temperature washes, preserving fabric quality and extending the life of linens THE ROLE OF TRAINING AND SAFETY
Effective laundry management in care homes extends beyond the machines themselves Proper training for staff is critical to ensure that laundry processes are carried out safely and effectively Understanding how to use detergents correctly is a key aspect of this training Professional laundry detergents are formu-
lated to be both powerful against germs and safe for sensitive skin but improper use can diminish their effectiveness or even pose safety hazards
Staff must be trained in the correct handling and dosing of these detergents to maximize their benefits while ensuring safety Additionally, training on the use of laundry equipment helps prevent operational errors and promotes adherence to hygiene protocols
SAFEGUARDING YOUR RESIDENTS
In conclusion the importance of best laundry practices in care homes cannot be overstated By implementing effective laundry procedures care facilities can safeguard the health and well-being of residents maintain a clean and hygienic environment, and ultimately enhance the quality of care provided Prioritising proper laundry practices is a fundamental aspect of upholding the highest standards of cleanliness and ensuring the comfort and safety of individuals in care homes

The Transformative Role of Music in Care Communities
In life where memories intertwine with the present there's a profound need for companionship understanding and support – especially for those navigating the complexities of dementia We know that Dementia isn t just a medical condition; it s a complicated journey for over 90 000 people in Scotland today marked by profound emotional upheaval and huge uncertainty As such we believe that approaches to this delicate type of care must transcend clinical protocols and embrace the little things when it comes to human experience For example music!
When the rhythm of life slows to a gentle rhythm in the quiet corridors of care facilities, music can be a powerful force and breathe vibrancy and vitality into the lives of those who need it most What we have found is that for those navigating the complexities of dementia, the role of music
surpasses mere entertainment it becomes a lifeline A conduit for connection and a source of comfort
In my time in my role I personally have witnessed first-hand the great impact of music in nurturing mental physical and emotional wellbeing among the 3 500 people benefiting from our Dementia Day Care Services every year We have all been exposed to music in some way in our lives –whether by listening to recordings playing an instrument attending concerts or dancing From lively sing-alongs to serene music therapy sessions partaking in a symphony of experiences when living with dementia can awaken hidden memories, stir dormant emotions and reignite feelings of joy and camaraderie
In fact a study comparing standard care to regular singing or music listening sessions over 10 weeks in 89 people with dementia (type not specified) music sessions improved general cognition (MMSE score) attention and executive function compared to standard care Singing appeared to evoke personal remote memories by increasing recall of names of children friends and immediate short story recall
One of our flagship programmes the Music Wellbeing Programme stands as a testament to the power of communal music-making Led by talented musicians and dedicated staff members this dementia-inclusive activity serves as a sanctuary where residents and caregivers alike gather to share stories create melodies and forge lasting connections Through familiar tunes, we witness the emergence of radiant smiles, the tapping of feet, and the stirring of long-forgotten memories, as residents reclaim moments of joy and belonging Music really does serve as a universal language for us all overcoming factors such as age cognition and physical ability
Could your centre or service partner with local entertainers or other community organisations to incorporate music within your care community? From lively dance performances to intimate acoustic sessions these
collaborative endeavours create an environment with an infectious energy, lifting spirits and fostering a sense of collective celebration
The Eric Liddell Community stands as a centre of hope, redefining the landscape of dementia care with innovation compassion, and inclusivity Our namesake – a Scottish legend, sports person and missionary – strived to create a world where no one felt isolated or alone Where every individual's journey is met with dignity and respect
Based on the substantial evidence that music offers numerous health benefits we’d highly recommend that your establishment considers introducing music entertainment and community engagement Together we can all create moments of joy connection and meaning for those who need it most

A Comprehensive Approach to Managing Falls Among Elderly Residents: A Nursing and Operational Perspective
ByAs the Director of Operations and Commissioning at Langdale Care Homes, and a seasoned nurse with over 20 years in the healthcare industry, I have witnessed first-hand the challenges posed by falls among elderly residents It is a subject close to my heart, and I feel it is of utmost importance to share our comprehensive and sensitive approach to this matter
Falls can have devastating effects on the physical, mental, and emotional health of our elderly residents leading to injury hospitalisation and a decline in confidence and independence However they are not an inevitable part of ageing With effective strategies and due diligence we can significantly reduce the risk and impact of falls Our approach is rooted in individualised care Each resident is unique and so too are their risks and vulnerabilities A thorough and personalised risk assessment is the cornerstone of our falls management strategy The assessment covers a wide range of areas from physical health mobility and medication to environmental factors within the home
In terms of physical health we pay keen attention to conditions known to increase fall risk such as poor vision arthritis and neurological impairments Regular health check-ups coupled with personalised exercise programmes to improve strength and balance have proven highly effective Our team works closely with residents ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in performing these exercises
Medication can also significantly influence fall risk As a nurse I understand the complex interactions between various drugs and how they can affect balance and coordination Therefore we regularly review residents'

Alleviating Pain in Care Homes - Prevalence of Pain in Care Homes
Over 425 000 people live in Care Homes in the UK Many have significant longterm health problems Some 65% have dementia, reduced cognitive functioning, and difficulties with communication Studies estimate that at least one-third of the Care Home population live with, and experience pain
Care Home residents with cognitive and speech disorders are at a higher risk of living with pain and musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) that affect muscles bones and joints
The Care Act 2014 emphasises the importance of measuring and improving the wellbeing of social care users However, there is no standard method of measuring quality of life in Care Homes nor are there ways to measure aspects of health such as pain, anxiety, or depression
The consensus is that pain is often under-recognised and under-treated in care homes
However pain is a subjective experience and cannot be adequately measured which is why mainstream approaches rely on self-reporting A key challenge to carers managing these experiences is the high proportion of residents who live with dementia
THERMAL IMAGING – A NON-INVASIVE OBJECTIVE SOLUTION
Thermal imaging or thermography is a non-invasive complementary diagnostic approach that creates a high-definition thermal map of your body (thermogram) Thermograms illustrate temperature patterns consistent with inflammation Inflammation is a vital part of the immune system s response to injury and infec-
tion
The appearance and location of thermal patterns helps to identify regions and sources of pain based on levels and differences in temperature and hence thermography can be used to diagnose pain objectively - invaluable when the resident is unable to communicate effectively
Thermography can also detect the source of pain and inflammation surrounding bone fractures entrapped nerves muscular trigger points and arthritis It enables the early detection of pressure injuries before any visible signs and provides diagnostic information indispensable in helping to arrive at identifying the sources of pain and an accurate diagnosis
Early detection of the source of the problem allows practitioners and residents to design a proactive treatment plan with specific interventions and treatments to mitigate the process of inflammation Thermography is also a highly effective tool for monitoring if a treatment protocol is working
Bunn et al in a meta-analysis of studies in 2020 found that thermography had such high diagnostic utility that they propose thermography as a first line MSD detection tool
By seeing what the human eye cannot see Thermidas thermal imaging solutions can assist carers and clinicians in locating and creating optimal treatment plans and alleviating pain
