Carriageworks Theatre is a place where old meets new. Built as a carriage manufacturer in 1848, the Victorian building has since been reimagined as a cultural hub in the city centre. There’s always space to play, laugh, discover and create.
The Carriageworks has always been defined by its versatility, and this year is no different. We’re delighted to announce that the citywide literature festival, Leeds Lit Fest, will return for its second year. There’ll be opportunities to attend a stimulating programme of events, talks and interactive workshops that will dive into the best books, films and podcasts from Leeds and beyond. Other exciting news includes the return of Best of BE Festival; three companies from Europe will showcase storytelling, dance, physical theatre, in three, 30-minute shows all in one exhilarating evening. And SAA-uk will celebrate the exchange of ideas and cultural connections between South Asia and the UK with a programme of dance, comedy, music and literature at Confluence Festival.
With so much on offer to tempt you, we look forward to seeing you soon. The Carriageworks team.
The Venue Inside the Main Auditorium you can expect a range of shows to inspire and entertain, from imaginative new plays to inventive adaptations of popular stories. The Studio is a cosy black box performance space and the perfect place to catch new innovative theatre, rising comedy stars and intimate gigs. The venue bar is now open Monday to Saturday, with pop up events happening throughout the year.
Look out for Leeds CAN Leeds Community Arts Network (Leeds CAN) is a group of 14 community drama, musical, opera, youth theatre and other arts societies. ‘Utterly spellbinding singing and narration... and as the red dress’ true origin unfolds, the revelation will leave you quietly breathless’
Unravelling the joy and pain from a story of her grandmother’s youth in 1940s Germany, Rowan celebrates small acts of resistance and boldly asks a troubling question for our times: can hope for our future be found in the very darkest pockets of our history?
Adventurous new writing meets the warmth of a folk gig in this heartfelt and personal one woman show, uniquely weaving immersive storytelling with live fiddle, banjo and original songs taken from Rowan’s brand new genre-melding debut solo album The Lines We Draw Together (The Guardian’s Folk Album of the Month).

Best of BE FESTIVAL MAIN AUDITORIUM
Cross Europe in one night: see three shows from three countries in one brilliant evening. Each year, BE FESTIVAL packages up three of their favourite shows from their international festival and sends them on a tour of the UK. Three companies from Belgium, Spain and Hungary will showcase snapshots of storytelling, dance, physical theatre, in three, 30-minute shows all in one exhilarating evening. Hungarian dance-artist Anna Biczók mixes memories, imagination and shifting perspectives to explore the phenomena of an ‘experience’ in her solo dance lecture Precedents to a Potential Future. In The Sensemaker from Switzerland, a mute dancer panics and strains to keep her tightly orchestrated routine in time to the chopped-and-spliced soundtrack. Bits and pieces of music and spoken word are contrasted to push the protagonist to the limit. Levitations by Belgium’s Hannah De Meyer is a dark, funny and surreal trip around Hannah’s universe. She effortlessly crafts together movement and poetry where hope and despair, being and not being, sexuality, love, and death rub shoulders.
