We’re celebrating the start of summer with an array of theatre hand-picked just for you, with brand new touring productions, fringe favourites, colourful children’s theatre and interactive workshops.
Described as ‘revelatory, educational, inspiring’, the Northern Short Story Festival, now in its fourth year, is the North’s only dedicated Short Story Festival. Host to a diverse range of prizewinning publishers and authors, the festival will return to the theatre this June.
For younger audiences, we have two fantastic productions to inspire and delight; starting with a new show full of multi-coloured delights, Yellow is the Colour of Sunshine tells the story of two friends who learn to communicate about their feelings using words, sign language and dance.
Inspired by the first man in America to plead insanity as his defence, award-winning writer Camilla Whitehill and Strictly Arts examine the unspoken link between mental health and systemic racism. ‘Powerful and provocative’ Freeman uses breath-taking physical theatre, spoken word, gospel singing, shadow puppetry and more.
Set sail on a swashbuckling high sea adventure! Little Blue Monster theatre company returns to the Carriageworks Theatre with their hit show Pirate Pearl and the Big Blue Monster.
Multi-award-winning gig theatre, Electrolyte, powerfully explores mental health using spoken word and underscored by original music.
Carriageworks Theatre is a place where old meets new. Built as a carriage manufacturer in 1848, the Victorian building has since been reimagined as a cultural hub in the city centre. There’s always space to play, laugh, discover and create.
In 2016, Blowfish Theatre made a musical about Boris Johnson and Brexit. Now they’re returning with a new updated version because an awful lot of politics has happened in Britain (you may have noticed). Boris the Musical 2: Brexit Harder is an entirely revised, updated and expanded show, with new music throughout with a whole lot more Jacob Rees Mogg. Can’t make it to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe? No problem. You can catch the fest’s biggest hits early at our Edinburgh Fringe Festival previews. With over 21 acts across one week, the Carriageworks Theatre brings you a series of work-in-progress comedy shows, featuring acts due to perform at the Festival.
The Venue Inside the Main Auditorium you can expect a range of shows to inspire and entertain, from imaginative new plays to inventive adaptations of popular stories. The Studio is a cosy black box performance space and the perfect place to catch new innovative theatre, rising comedy stars and intimate gigs. The venue bar is now open Monday to Saturday, with pop up events happening throughout the year.
Look out for Leeds CAN Devise, rehearse and perform a musical all in one week. Whether you were born to be on stage or this is your first step into the spotlight, join us for a fantastic five days creating and performing a brand-new show-stopping mystery musical. Make Musical Magic is the ideal summer school for musical enthusiasts aged 8–16!

Leeds Community Arts Network (Leeds CAN) is a group of 14 community drama, musical, opera, youth theatre and other arts societies. WORKSHOP
Led by improvisation professional Kate McCabe, this two-day course is designed for actors who wish to use improv skills to bolster their stage work. Students will learn how to think on their feet, connect with their characters, and support each other on stage and as an ensemble. We’ll learn fun Whose Line is it Anyway-style improv games. Plus, we’ll also look at exercises that help you strengthen your connection to your fellow players, see the ‘bigger picture’ in any scene, build confidence, and be braver on stage. The course will culminate in a showcase immediately following the second session.

Formed in 1976 in Salford, Joy Division is one of the most influential and best-loved bands Britain has produced. They developed a unique sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the late1970s post-punk movement. Writing rich place description not only creates a heightened experience for the reader but is a powerful tool in moving your story forward. Renowned American parapsychologist Doctor Roy Earle, famous for discrediting hauntings and exposing fake mediums, is invited to attend a seance in what is said to be the most haunted building in England, a building with a horrific history, Blaine Manor. Even the locals won’t set foot there, as all who walk within those grounds will be cursed. But his arrival at the manor has awoken something, something horrific within the walls. As a raging storm closes off Blaine Manor from the outside world, Earle and the others find that what is waiting there is not nearly as horrific as what has entered with him... Ages: 12+

Join Wakefield Community Gospel Choir for a fantastic night filled with your Motown favourites, with arrangements by our acclaimed Musical Director, Rachel Modest. From Stevie to Smokey, Martha to Marvin, you’re sure to find something to keep you dancing ‘All Night Long’ if you love the classics from this iconic era, in this Motown’s 60th Year. WCGC,, a secular choir that has been together since 1997, performing the best of soul, pop and gospel. Made up of members from across West Yorkshire performing at numerous venues, including a recent performance on BBC Look North.

Work with award-winning industry professionals to create a new musical performance of your own. You’ll have a week jam-packed with singing, acting and dancing and will have the chance to write your own musical numbers. The week will also include exclusive access to the Main Auditorium in the Carriageworks Theatre to work on technical theatre skills and will culminate in a performance of your musical on the stage. The final showcase performance for parents and friends will take place at 6pm on Fri 16 Aug. Ages: 8–16

Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers is led by professional theatre director Ruth Cooper. Groups aged 10-14 and 14-18 work throughout the year creating new theatre whilst developing teamwork skills and increasing their vocabulary of contemporary performance styles and techniques. The young people form a supportive group in which their creativity is nurtured and they are offered a genuine platform for their ideas. Each of the groups are given the freedom to develop their own writing and creative expression into shows performed across Leeds and in the Carriageworks Theatre’s two performance spaces. Carriageworks Theatre are proud to host our Young Theatre Makers performing a series of original performances to celebrate 10 years of this very special youth theatre. CYTM develops young people’s skills as actors, writers and directors through offering them the opportunity to create imaginative, original theatre which tells the stories they want to tell. Ambitious and inventive, TEN STORIES is by turns thought-provoking, witty and moving and puts the Young Theatre Makers’ voices firmly centre stage. Join us for the culmination of CYTM 2018-19 and for the 10th original main stage production by our talented, insightful Young Theatre Makers.

BSL PERFORMANCES for British Sign Language users on stated shows. RELAXED PERFORMANCES allow members of the audience to move around freely, leave or enter the auditorium as needed. Lights never go completely dark and sound effects are softened. These performances are open to all but are designed to welcome people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability, dementia or sensory and communication disorders.
