as i take up the baton from my predecessor nick ground, i would like to take a moment to look back at our recent accomplishments before looking ahead to our future achievements. While I do not for one moment believe that the work of the Construction equipment Association is done – far from it – I do find myself in the enviable position of inheriting the presidency at a time when the fortunes of the industry in general, and of the association in particular are looking up. And so I begin my first presidential address with a sincere thank you to Nick Ground for his tireless hard work, commitment and dedication to not only ensuring a strong future for our association but for converting PlantworX from a collective good idea into a meaningful and popular showcase for all this industry has to offer. my appointment comes at a momentous time for the CeA. We have just published our first Sector report for 10 years and – contrary to popular belief – it shows our particular corner of the British manufacturing sector to be in remarkably rude health. We are also counting down to PlantworX II that will be taking place in Bruntingthorpe in less than a year. Add to that our annual conference which takes place at One Great George Street in London on 4 September this year, and our collective agenda is already filling up fast. I will, therefore, be looking forward to the support of all the CeA team and – most importantly – from CeA members to ensure that the incredible momentum gathered under Nick Ground’s presidency is maintained and accelerated under my own.

MEMBER news all Hail CeSar The 150,000th machine to be fitted with CeSAr security and registration was revealed on the opening day of Hillhead 2014 on the Finning stand. The 150,000th CeSAr system was fitted to a truly unique Caterpillar machine; the modified Cat D6N 'rover', fresh from the Coldest Journey in Antarctica. The world's greatest living explorer, Sir ranulph Fiennes, revealed the machine with its CeSAr plate in front of a large crowd gathered on the Finning stand. The appropriately unique CeSAr triangular tamper evident registration plates are marked with the distinctive alpha-numeric registration mark 150O0O (one, five, zero, o, zero, o). Finning, the world's largest Cat heavy and general equipment dealer, adopted CeSAr in march 2010. Since then, over 10,000 Cat machines have been safeguarded with the CeSAr security system supplied by Datatag ID Limited. CeSAr works by giving each piece of equipment a unique and permanent ‘fingerprint’ using an array of covert and overt high technology security marking devices including tamper evident triangular registrations plates, radio-frequency identification (rFID) transponders, forensic liquid DNA, and microscopic Datadots.

MEMBER news Warm Welcome to new members

fozmula is one of the latest companies to join the CeA. The company is a uKbased manufacturer of equipment primarily designed for the control, monitoring and protection of internal combustion engines, generator sets and vehicles. Products include sensors, switches and gauges for the control and monitoring of fuel level, coolant level, temperature and pressure. Fozmula specialises in modular product design and has expertise in developing electronic and mechanical interfaces that enable it to offer devices that are tailored to customers’ applications. The company has just launched a new liquid level contents gauge that allows fuel tank designers to fit a single device where previously they may have fitted three separate products. The new G/LL65 gauge provides two electrical outputs in addition to the mechanical level indication. According to Fozmula’s Sales Director, Paul Holtby, the G/LL65 is ideal for applications such as monitoring fuel level in tanks on generator sets and off-highway vehicles. “This gauge enables the liquid level to be monitored with and without power, saving end-users time during filling and reducing the likelihood of costly and environmentally harmful fuel spillages,” he says. “When the system is running, an operator can monitor the fuel level at the controller or vehicle display and the gauge's built in level switch can be used to trigger an alarm if the fuel runs low.”

A big CeA welcome also to Sevcon which designs and manufactures AC and DC motor controllers and system components, battery chargers and converters, gauges and displays within the industrial, agricultural and marine sectors. The company is also active in the hybrid vehicle technology sector for both two and four wheels vehicles. Sevcon recently revealed it was suffering from a lack of skilled North-east engineering talent, so in line with the CeA’s ‘Skills Advisory Panel’ has taken on three apprentices. The company has welcomed 18-year-old Adam Lewis to a trainee IT support technician course, with Kristopher Fisher, 17, and 16-year-old Shaun Angus studying four-year electrical engineering apprenticeships. Sevcon previously launched a £200,000 bursary scheme to fund students through university after telling Construction Worx it was bringing in specialists from China, Iran and Colombia. “ensuring we have a pipeline of skilled engineers is vital to the future of our business,” says matt Boyle, Sevcon’s president and chief executive. “The skills situation in the North-east is critical and we need to ensure we have the right people with the right abilities to match our future growth projections. I’m delighted to welcome these apprentices, and I’m sure they will all prove their worth to the business.” earlier this year, Sevcon also launched a venture targeting the multi-billion pound agriculture market, unveiling low carbon systems for the tractor and machinery market. The move created an initial ten jobs and was supported by a £300,000 grant from the Government's regional Growth Fund. WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

The CeA would like to welcome back nurock mixers which has recently rejoined the CeA. The company has been involved in the design, manufacture and operation of batch on-site, concrete mixers since 1987. Nurock says that it has developed the most comprehensive volumetric concrete mixer on the market today and its mixers have produced many thousands of cubic metres of concrete. The company has recently launched a new model mixer the new compact Cubic 3-4 Series. The highly mobile 4 m3 version combines a good payload with what Nurock says boasts excellent manoeuvrability. The company report that customer feedback has been excellent. The new addition in the range allows offering from 1.5 to 9.2 m3 versions, the company also produce special versions on demand. Last, but by no means least is new member rima uk. rima is based in Dereham, Norfolk, and is part of the rima S.p.A Group based in Italy. The company claims to be europe’s largest specialist manufacturers of agricultural and industrial components. Its key products include parking jacks, hydraulic stabilisers, turntables and industrial slewing rings. The company boasts a warehouse in excess of 200 m2 and is able to hold stock for a large range of popular products for both the individual walk-in customer right through to the industrial manufacturer requiring larger quantities at short notice.

MEMBER news Coupling – By royal appointment Northern Ireland-based Hill engineering has been awarded the 2014 Queen's Award for enterprise in Innovation. Hill engineering designs and manufactures couplers for the excavator industry and was recognised for TeFrA a double locking hydraulic coupler which has helped to transform health and safety procedures on construction sites. The system, which is patented by the company and exported across three continents, has been the catalyst for Hill engineering to double its workforce. The TeFrA is suitable for excavators ranging from three to 120 tonnes and is fully compliant with all expected key provisions of the forthcoming new european (eN474) and proposed global ISO 13031 safety standards.

“I am delighted that our innovation and commercial success has been recognized with a Queen’s Award It reflects our commitment to innovation and clearly demonstrates that Hill engineering is a global player with innovation at the heart of the company,” says Hill engineering managing director Ian Hill. “It is a tremendous achievement for the company, especially in our 20th year.” The innovation behind TeFrA is the uncomplicated design of the product which utilises only three moving parts. According to Ian Hill, it is these innovative technical features of the product that have raised the safety benchmark for the industry and TeFrA will ultimately help prevent unsafe working practices. The TeFrA has also led to 30 percent year-

on-year growth for Hill and with further significant growth projected we expect an additional 30 jobs to be created this year. hill Engineering from Newry has won the innovation award in this year’s Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for the patented TEFRA – a double locking hydraulic coupler. greenshields guns for growth One of the world’s largest JCB dealers is investing for growth with a £1.5 million expansion of its headquarters. Greenshields JCB has extended and completely refurbished its premises in Farnham, Surrey, creating additional openplan offices, warehousing for parts and an additional acre of yard storage for customer machines. The move comes as the uK market for construction equipment booms with total sales up by more than 50 percent compared to last year – making the market the fastest growing in the world. The new premises were officially opened by JCB Group chief executive Graeme macdonald. “JCB has ambitious global growth plans and it’s important that our dealers around the world invest to support those ambitions,” macdonald says. “Greenshields JCB’s investment is exactly what is needed to ensure we win more business in the competitive uK market.” This is a view shared by Greenshields JCB managing director George Greenshields. “I am proud to have been associated with

JCB for over 35 years both as an employee and as a JCB dealer. This business has succeeded by establishing excellent relationships with international, national, regional and owner operators, providing them with top-level service and support at all times,” Greenshields says. “We are confident as a business, having doubled our turnover in the last 5 years, and with this investment, we plan to do the same again in the next 5 years.” WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

Built to JCB corporate dealer standards, the new complex stands on a 2.8 acre site. Greenshields JCB was established in 1996 and, with seven depots in Surrey, essex, West Sussex, Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Kent, is now recognised as one of the world’s largest JCB dealers. The JCB and Greenshields JCB teams celebrate the official opening of the dealer's newly-expanded hQ in Farnham.

MEMBER news darchem enjoys ministerial Visit Business and energy minister michael Fallon mP has visited a new £8 million state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at precision fabrication firm Darchem engineering. The investment, which has been supported by a £1m grant from the Government’s regional Growth Fund, has seen Darchem engineering’s parent company, the esterline Corporation, invest the remaining £7 million in the plant. Darchem engineering, part of esterline’s engineered materials Platform, has completed work on the £8 million investment in its North east manufacturing facility – a major project which will create 86 permanent jobs. “The Government is backing British manufacturing – boosting jobs and growth in the North east,” says business minister michael Fallon. “Through the regional Growth Fund (rGF) we have invested £320 million in the region to help companies expand and create long-term, highly skilled employment. The results from CeA’s latest survey clearly show that the construction and off-road vehicle industry remain a key contributor to the uK’s prosperity. With uK company sales now over £11bn for the first time, it is important that we continue to provide the right conditions so industry can continue to thrive. That is why we are investing over £1 billion jointly with industry through initiatives such as the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and a planned Technology Strategy Board (TSB) project to ensure companies across the sector have the support they need to develop the technologies of the future." Darchem engineering’s dynamic new factory is a fine example of the impact rGF can make through supporting businesses to deliver their plans for growth, win new contracts and create jobs.” Fallon joined Darchem managing director Billy meijer to officially commission the 75,000 sq. ft. factory, which is situated on a brownfield site next to the firm’s main factory in Stillington, Stockton-On-Tees.

The investment had been prompted by demand for Darchem engineering’s precision products, particularly in the growing market for large scale nuclear fabrications. “We were delighted to welcome mr Fallon to Darchem. Our new factory is a major new investment that demonstrates our strength in the markets we serve and the confidence of our parent company esterline. Within our sectors, Aerospace, Defence, Automotive and energy, we have seen significant growth and have won many new contracts and have the chance to bid for even more substantial projects which is fuelling the need for this new production facility,” says Billy meijer, managing director WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

of Darchem engineering. “This area is a great place to do business thanks to the positive attitudes of the local authority and Tees Valley unlimited, as well as our highly skilled and motivated workforce. The support from the regional Growth Fund is a significant contribution and demonstrates the government’s commitment to balanced economic growth in British manufacturing.” As well as the 86 new jobs, the investment at Darchem will safeguard 29 posts. The new roles will consist of technical positions as well as highly skilled fabrication and welding positions. TSB funding aVailaBle

The government is funding projects that have the potential to create or protect long-term jobs in the private sector, and programmes where partner organisations choose smaller projects to support, which will deliver sustainable jobs.

The Technology Strategy Board (TCB) Off Highway Vehicles competition got off to a strong start at the networking event at the Heritage motor Centre on 3rd July. it was confirmed that a minimum of £5 million is available to support successful bids for innovation projects in the sector.

The £3.2 billion regional Growth Fund (rGF) suppor ts eligible projects and programmes that are also raising private sector investment to create economic growth and sustainable employment. Selected bidders must drawdown their grants between 2011 and 2017. rounds 1 to 5 of the rGF have suppor ted over 400 projects and programmes across england – allocating £2.9 billion of government suppor t, which is projected to deliver 573,000 jobs and £16 billion of private investment between now and the mid2020s. To date over £750 million of rGF suppor t has been drawn down by companies, delivering over 90,000 jobs and £1.8 billion of private investment. round 6 of the rGF opened on 19 June 2014. At least £200 million of rGF suppor t is being made available for this round and bidders have until midday on 30 September 2014 to submit their applications to the Fund. Those bids that are selected for suppor t will have until march 2017 to drawn down the rGF funding. round 6 remains focused on the private sector and bids will only be accepted from wholly private organisations, such as limited companies and universities. The minimum bid threshold is £1 million. The rGF continues to operate in england only. Fur ther guidance to those thinking about bidding is available in the rGF Fund Leaflet: http://tinyurl.com/kkoo9er

IThe focus of the competition will be vehicle emissions and vehicle energy efficiency – and can include on or off vehicle applications. It is thought that the initiative will attract a good response from consortia offering cross-sectoral solutions i.e. providing the opportunity to introduce technology from firms currently outside the construction equipment sphere. l Scope of competition: wheeled or tracked off highway vehicles. This covers agriculture, construction, mining, materials handling and airport vehicles. l Technology readiness levels (TrLs): the competition is for industrial research projects from TrL levels 2 to 4 aiming to reach 4 to 6.This ranges from research to prove feasibility to technology demonstration. 9 on the scale is “system test, launch and operations”. l realisable technology benefits: must be realised on vehicle e.g. telematics, energy management, energy capture, new materials. Other benefits can be realised but emissions/efficiency must be primary aims. l eligibility: must be an additional activity not a subsidy for a current project. must be collaborative i.e. involve more than one partner (which can be academic institutions) – with value added to the uK. l Format: applications will be judged on a single written stage (partnering with an experienced company is an advantage). l Timing: competition opens 29th September 2014 – potential applicants briefing on 30th September at the Heritage motor Centre. Competition closes 12th November. results scheduled for 19th December. WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

eef CallS fOr infraSTruCTure CHange eef, formerly the engineering employers' federation, is calling for a change in the way in which major infrastructure projects are planned. The Cea is supporting the call which is detailed in this open letter to the press: The uK does not have a good track record of identifying, planning and delivering major infrastructure projects. Infrastructure to support growth is identified too late and a protracted decision making process has led to policy reversals in key areas such as energy and transport. We need to break this short term culture which undermines business choosing Britain as a place to invest. With capacity constraints looming recent governments have sought to address how projects are delivered. However we do not have the structures to anticipate the infrastructure we will need in the future. The forthcoming manifestos of the main political parties must address this failure as forever playing catch up does not support sustainable growth. The uK must do better through establishing a permanent, independent infrastructure body tasked with looking ahead at our infrastructure needs. This would kick start the process to find potential solutions from political parties, the public and other stakeholders far earlier than at present and appraising these on a level playing field to provide trusted analysis. In developing its work such a body must be accountable to Parliament, not Government, to provide it with the independence to produce impartial analysis. Crucially however the final decision on projects must be taken by the Government of the day. We all want a more productive, competitive and environmentally sustainable economy. This demands a new way of thinking about how we develop and design the world class infrastructure needed to support it.

Those of us of a certain age will recall a time when the run-in to a General election often manifested itself as an upsurge in demand for scrapers as the incumbent Government sought to secure a few additional votes by buildings roads and motorways to make our journey to work that little bit easier. But with the uK motorway network now in maintenance rather than construction mode, scrapers have fallen out of fashion more rapidly than england 2014 World Cup replica shirts. However, as the political parties fire the opening salvos across each others’ bows, the “election effect” is no less evident, even if it is manifested in a smaller and more familiar sector of the construction equipment industry. For as long as most of can remember, the uK has suffered from a shortfall in both private and affordable housing. But in an attempt to shore up its reputation in advance of next year’s General election, the incumbent coalition government has made housing a priority with initiatives such as the Help to Buy and the Affordable Home Ownership initiative. And while the final scores on the doors for equipment sales will not appear until 2014 draws to a close, it seems certain that sales of telehandlers, backhoe loaders, mini excavators and site dumpers – all housing construction mainstays – will have enjoyed a significant hike. For the first time since it began, we have seen housing contracts dominate the upper echelons of the BCLive league table, the uK’s only real-time league table of construction contract awards. While this is due, in part, to the gradual decline in the number of landmark projects such as The Shard, The Walkie Talkie, and The Cheese Grater in London, the upswing in new housing starts has been one of the key factors in the resurgence of the uK construction industry. According to our statistics, house building contracts have totalled £6.8 billion since the beginning of 2014. That is 60 percent up on the same period last year, contributing 29 percent of the £22.6 billion total contract awards recorded to date in 2014. The news is not all positive, however. For one thing, the current housing start boom has been felt most strongly in and around London, creating a geographic imbalance that will be felt most strongly by dealers in parts of the South West and the North of england. Furthermore, the past month has seen a slight slowing in housing starts, possibly as a result of banks tightening lending to prevent an overheating of the wider economy. regardless of that slight pothole on the road to recovery, it seems certain that housing will maintain its current reputation as the sector to lead construction out of recession. And if that IS the case, manufacturers and dealers involved in the backhoe loader and telehandler sector should profit from the forthcoming General election, regardless of their own political leanings. neil edwards is CeO of The Builders’ Conference. SKI LLS AND tRAInIng Bridging the Skills gap Launched at its recent national conference on innovation and engineering, the Construction equipment Association’s Skills Advisory Panel aims to make a difference in the skills challenge on behalf of its sector.

The Construction equipment association has responded quickly and decisively to bridge a perceived skills gap writes Cea strategy consultant, Philip Burgess.

The Panel has been set up by the CeA Board as a priority in response to key findings and recommendations from two studies commissioned by the CeA: one, a mapping exercise of the Association’s current relationships across the sector; and the other the first detailed construction equipment industry’s sector report in a decade. It will advise on courses of action necessary to reduce the perceived skills gap in the sector. The skills gap is widely recognised as a significant inhibitor to manufacturing and export-driven growth – two vital ingredients needed for the re-balancing of the uK economy. Addressing it requires a

SKI LLS AND tRAInIng strategic and more collective approach and the composition of the Skills Advisory Panel, drawn from key stakeholders in and around the construction equipment industry gives confidence that meaningful and realistic solutions will materialise.

identifying the skills gaps Investment in the skills agenda for this sector is clearly needed. The sector study report shows that the off-road sector is the second largest within the uK’s automotive industry and is close to, or already exceeding pre-recession levels with an estimated total revenue in 2013 of £11 billion. It also tells us that while companies are seeking to continue to hire people, skills requirements are different to those of pre-recession times. machines are gaining more and more electronic functions, switching from purely mechanical functionality, driving a need for new electronic engineers and creating opportunities in the supply chain. This increasing dependency on electronics coupled with an insufficient supply of suitably qualified engineers to design and maintain systems is a major concern. With regard to vocational training, we learn from the sector study report that despite leading manufacturers having a good record of resourcing apprenticeships, academies and universities, retention is a problem as too many apprentices leave the industry once trained. A shortage of experienced sales staff and difficulties in recruiting overseas staff in support service roles are also flagged up as issues of concern. These issues have led to a common concern that attracting the right mix of skills to the sector is a major challenge as there are new functions which require and amalgam of engineering and IT skills that did not exist 10 years ago. The Skills Advisory Panel will need to be briefed on these issues along with how they relate to the delivery of strategic objectives of HmG’s Automotive and Construction Councils which CeA seeks to influence.

In addition, the knowledge, experience and insight of Panel members will be sought on an extended range of issues which is likely to include, but not be limited to: l workforce planning and readiness; l the development of transferable skills between the automotive and related industries; l the perceived lack of training/career path opportunities in small companies; l the under-representation of women in the construction equipment sector and the need for a more diverse and inclusive industry; l the need for better Science, Technology, engineering and mathematics (STem)related careers advice in schools and, for those already in work, the increasing need for responsive training systems that people can access to up-skill and re-train; l inspire primary school children to develop interests in STem-related disciplines.

Objectives The objectives for the Panel are to grasp the issues on behalf of the construction equipment industry and to advise the CeA WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

accordingly on appropriate courses of action towards addressing them. Specific actions for the CeA will need to be determined to be delivered over the short and medium term. For example, a salary survey to benchmark the sector’s offerings against those from other sectors may be done relatively quickly. So too could the development of a network with leading academic institutions in terms of skills and recruitment, and an analysis of engineering graduates in the uK – where they come from and where they go when qualified. Other initiatives may take more time such as engaging effectively with the schools agenda, harnessing profits from PlantworX to fund student bursaries or competitions, and developing new sector-wide training schemes.

meeting synergy The initial meeting of the Panel will be held on 3rd September at the Institution of Civil engineers in Westminster; a precursor to the CeA Annual Conference, Signposts… directions of travel for the construction equipment industry being staged there the following day at which the skills debate will again be of relevance. All invitees to the Skills Advisory Panel are also extended invitations to the Annual Conference.

There was a barely perceptible yet everpresent air of disquiet in the run-up to the Hillhead 2014 exhibition. Had the sharp but long overdue recovery of the construction industry percolated sufficiently to buoy the confidence of quarry owners and operators? h I LLh EAD RevIew Derbyshire? Would the British weather and the ever-present threat of “Hillhead Ankle” – a pernicious and debilitating condition known only to those that frequent the show – keep people away? As it transpired, any such concerns were quickly swept away by blue skies, a crowd of almost 18,000 visitors, and the most upbeat Hillhead exhibition in a decade. Of course, this is doubly good news for producers of construction equipment. Those that are directly involved in the quarry and extractive industries will be boosted by the general air of positivity around the quarry floor showground. And those that supply smaller equipment for purely construction applications will know that if quarry operators are busy and confident, there is a demand from the construction sector. After all, that stone has to go somewhere.

innovation abounds And if that weren’t sufficient positivity for one show, the plethora of innovation on display proved emphatically that manufacturers have loosened the r&D purse strings that had been drawn so tight to stave off the recession. Take for example the robotic excavator on display on the JCB stand. Developed jointly with leading demolition contractor Coleman and Company, the machine takes the familiar Brokk demolition robot concept and then rewrites the rule book. The unit is designed to keep the operator out of harm’s way during complex and potentially hazardous demolition works, the operator controlling the machine from a safe distance using advanced and wireless remote controls. (A video of the robotic excavator in action can be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/pvjpn2d)

If the robotic excavator marked a departure for JCB, then the launch of the second generation Hybrid excavators from Komatsu was evidence of ongoing product improvement. Komatsu was the first major manufacturer to employ hybrid technology in a volume-produced excavator and is, therefore, further down the development path. But the fact that the second generation machine has arrived just a few

SECTOR RepO Rt industry Bounces Back The first Construction equipment association Sector report in a decade finds the sector at or above pre-recessionary levels. mark anthony reports. Ask Joe Public or, better still, a London taxi driver. They’ll tell you. British manufacturing has gone the way of the Dodo, the British empire, the Austin Allegro and the flared trouser; consigned to the pages of the history books; dead and buried. It is an ex-industry. It has ceased to be. Those in the know, however, would beg to differ. And with the publication of the first Construction equipment Association Sector report in a decade, those in the know can now support their gut feelings with some substantial and remarkably positive evidence. For the report – produced by Knibb, Gormeanzo & Partners with the support of Off-Highway research – reveals a sector that has done more than just survive the recession. It finds an industry that has

SECTOR RepO Rt that the uK contributed more than 31 percent of all the construction equipment produced in europe, beating Germany – responsible for 16.6 percent - into a distant second place. The survey also indicated that whilst the likes of Caterpillar, JCB and Komatsu may be the industry’s household names, the industry boats more than 1,500 stakeholders with around 1,400 highly specialised Smes making a significant contribution. equally importantly, the report shows that the uK is way more than heavy industry and blacksmith engineering. Indeed, the uK boasts among its number global leaders in key activities ranging from axles and braking systems, through steering and seating, to advanced telematics and equipment diagnostic systems.

shaken off the hangover of the global recession; has bounced back to and – in some instances – above pre-recession levels; and which now heads the european league table in the volume and value of construction equipment produced. Altogether, the sector is contributing a headline-grabbing £11 billion to the uK economy; not bad for an industry that some would have us believe to be pushing up the daisies. even better since the survey period ended in 2012 when many export markets were still held in the vice-like grip of the longest and deepest recession in living memory.

Surfeit of Positivity reading between the lines of the new report reveals a veritable surfeit of positivity. Although uK plant manufacturers produced a smaller volume of equipment during the survey period, the value of that equipment was significantly higher, demonstrating an ongoing shift towards higher value equipment and a greater use of advanced technology. Furthermore, the survey demonstrated WWW.COneQ.Org.uk

And while uK construction activity remains stubbornly London-centric, the capital accounts for just 1 percent of employment in the uK plant manufacturing sector. The West midlands leads the way, accounting for 38 percent of all uK equipment manufacturing jobs, in an industry that is the very picture of geographic diversity.

I NT ERNAT I ONAL news JO What are some major mining HVO projects that uKTI is involved in – and how can construction equipment companies not involved in mining directly still benefit? mS Chile, with an estimated $112bn of investment in 51 major projects over the next 8 years. We are currently evaluating the opportunities and have commenced engagement with Codelco and others to identify where uK companies can meet their needs.

ukTi – focus on High Value Opportunities in the mining Supply Chain The Cea’s director of global Programmes, Joanna Oliver mBe, talks to mark Smith, ukTi head of ukTi’s mining Sector team. JO What is the role of the uKTI mining Sector team? mS I am tasked with assisting uK companies across the mining supply chain to win international business. Working with uKTI’s network – both in the uK and overseas, we aim to identify overseas opportunities and match these to uK capability, developing the relationships with key buyers and decision makers and utilising the convening power of Government to develop and implement strategies to support uK companies win business. There are four core members of the mining team in the uK; myself, Josh King, Project manager and two specialists, Craig Sillars and Darryn Quayle. (Note: pics of mining team attached) uKTI’s overseas colleagues in British embassies and High Commissions are also key members of this “virtual” team, with market expertise and relationships with buyers and decision makers in market.

JO What are the uKTI HVOs – how can CeA members get involved? mS A key uKTI strategic initiative is our High Value Opportunity programme projects across a broad range of markets and sectors with a total value of at least £500 million and a minimum of £250 million of this accessible to uK companies. many of these projects will be of interest to CeA members covering infrastructure, road, rail, ports, airports and urban development. Through the programme, uK Trade and Investment (uKTI) can provide information on projects and contracts, provide access to a network of expert advisers in the uK and overseas and help companies build relationships with stakeholders including private sector business specialists and other government departments in the uK and overseas. Further details on the HVO programme and contacts for each of the projects can be found here; www.gov.uk/high-valueopportunities. JO What is being done on the mining supply chain initiative? mS In terms of mining, we have developed a Supply Chain initiative – looking at global mining opportunities and where uK companies, across the mining lifecycle, have great potential to win business. Current focus includes West and Southern Africa with significant opportunities not only in the mine developments themselves, but on the associated infrastructure, power and water services, which will be of interest to many CeA members who perhaps have not considered mining as their core business. iSSue 07 - Summer 2014

Other markets of interest include mongolia (where CeA are again organising a mission following on from the successful visits in recent years), Kazakhstan and Canada. uKTI support includes a programme of market visits organised in partnership with CeA, to these and other markets. Visits and the associated practical support available from both uKTI and CeA can help to introduce uK construction equipment manufacturers and service companies to overseas opportunities. In addition uKTI will be working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, uK export Finance and the Department for International Development and uK supply chain on the uK Pavilion at the mining Indaba, Cape Town in February 2015. The pavilion will showcase the uK’s extensive capability to the African mining industry and will include a series of African mining opportunity roundtables with senior African government officials. I would welcome CeA members participation in this event.
