ABOUT THE SONGBOOK ACADEMY®
Now in its 15th year, the Songbook Academy® is a transformative summer music intensive that immerses high school singers in America’s musical heritage and fosters artistic identity through song. Forty talented high school students are invited to participate in a life-changing week of learning alongside entertainment industry professionals, award-winning singers and performers, and educators from top university music and theater programs. In this week of mentoring, which culminates in a dazzling final showcase of performances, students form lasting connections with peers, alumni and professional mentors as together they celebrate and reinterpret the timeless repertoire of the Great American Songbook.

BY SCOTT HALL
As a young teen in New Albany, Ohio, Edin Kebede enjoyed singing and was active in musical theater, but she didn’t know much about jazz standards or the history of the Great American Songbook.
That changed after a friend told her about the Songbook Academy® summer intensive, the Great American Songbook Foundation’s flagship education program for high school performers. She submitted her audition materials and was selected as a Top 40 Finalist for the first time in 2021.
Even though the Songbook Academy was conducted virtually that year because of the global pandemic, Kebede discovered a new world of music – and a team of mentors and performing arts professionals to guide her through it.
“I immediately fell in love with the music after my first summer of the Academy,” she said. “I loved the individualized and personalized training we were getting in just a week. We got the chance to really dive deep into the song of our choice, and they helped us make it our own so beautifully. … Jazz has become my all-time favorite genre now.”
Kebede successfully auditioned again for the Songbook Academy in 2022 and 2023, as the program returned to an in-person format at the Center for the Performing Arts, headquarters of the Songbook Foundation. Focusing on tunes like “These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)” – a 1935 standard recorded by artists as diverse as Billie Holliday, Bing Crosby, James Brown and Rod Stewart – she was able to continue honing her performance skills under the tutelage of Broadway stars Liz Callaway and Nasia Thomas, among others, as well as the founder of the Songbook Foundation himself, Michael Feinstein.
“Meeting and working with Michael Feinstein was such an honor and privilege,” she recalls. “The Great American Songbook truly lives within him, and it was so cool getting to pick his brain throughout the week and learn more about the Songbook’s history. In 2022, I got the opportunity to perform alongside Michael and Straight No Chaser at the Center for the Performing Arts’ gala at the Palladium. Speaking with him after was truly the highlight of that year.”
The more Kebede learned about the foundations of popular music, the more she realized how relevant the classic songs remain despite the passage of time, and how her own life experiences can bring depth to a performance.
“In the jazz standards I chose to sing each summer, I found so many similarities to my own personal experiences within the lyrics,” she says. “A moment that stood out to me was my ‘Acting through the Song’ masterclass with Nasia Thomas this past summer. She allowed me to speak my song as a monologue to a scene partner. This activated so much within me that I began to cry once I realized how much I meant the words I was singing. It almost felt as if the lyrics were written about my life.”
The connections I made with mentors and my peers here have made a huge impact on my life and career.
– Edin Kebede, three-time Songbook Academy alumna
Kebede also had high praise for the vocal instructors and musical directors who provided support and guidance at each summer intensive.
“I’ve never worked with such amazing accompanists and vocal coaches in my life,” she says. “I’m still in touch with my coaches to this day, and I’m so appreciative of all the support they gave me and continue to give me even after the Songbook Academy.”
Now, although she is considering law school at some point, Kebede is studying musical theater at the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati. There, she reconnected with Callaway, an alumna of the school, and they have since performed together in a CCM-related concert at Carnegie Hall. She hopes to work regionally and nationally as an actor and singer and is developing her own cabaret show.
She urges anyone who appreciates the power of music to consider supporting the Songbook Academy.
“Although I can no longer participate in the Academy, a donation to this program would mean so much to me,” she says. “The connections I made with mentors and my peers here have made a huge impact on my life and career. … I want more students to experience the magic of this place, and I hope the program can continue to grow.”

ABOUT THE CENTER
The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.
The Center is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 3,500 performances and more than 1.5 million patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 30-plus nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events.
Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages –building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND ACCESSIBILITY
The arts are for everyone.
The Center for the Performing Arts and the Great American Songbook Foundation strive to be models and leaders in the community by creating a welcoming, affirming environment that is anti-racist and dedicated to advancing social justice and human rights, in which all employees, patrons and other visitors feel safe, supported, respected and valued.
We treasure the arts for their unique ability to express the individual spirit while celebrating our common humanity. Our mission to engage, inspire and educate encompasses the entire Indiana community and leaves no room for exclusion or discrimination of any kind, whether based on race, color, age, sex, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, socioeconomic status, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression. Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility are essential principles that guide our decisions as an employer and as a presenter of public events.
SUPPORT THE SONGBOOK THIS SUMMER
Through the Songbook Academy, we inspire and educate by celebrating classic melodies that have the power to last beyond the time they were written. The ultimate success of the Songbook Academy depends on the generosity of individuals like you.
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT!
Through July 31, all gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up to $20,000 by Dr. Larry Weeda Jr. and Sharon Polk.
Give now at TheSongbook.org/Donate or text SONGBOOK TO 91999.
