24-25 Applause Volume 2 - Holiday 2024

Page 1

WELCOME TO THE CENTER!

We’re enjoying a lovely fall here in the heartland, and believe it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. It’s a great time to enjoy the opportunities available here at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.

You may notice that we have a new name, but we’re still dedicated to the same mission: to engage and inspire the Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. Allied Solutions is a locally based company and a longtime supporter of our work, and this new partnership will help Allied Solutions Center continue to grow and enhance its arts and educational programming well into the future.

As for our Center Presents concert season, also sponsored by Allied Solutions, this year’s Holiday Series features acclaimed artists in a range of genres. We’re continuing our annual tradition with Dave Koz & Friends, who are making their 11th holiday appearance on our campus, and welcome back Indiana’s own Jon McLaughlin, building a new tradition with his second “& Friends” Christmas appearance at the Palladium. You can read about McLaughlin’s interesting musical path in the cover story on Page 6.

The series also includes an instrumental evening with Canadian Brass, marking the opening of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt outside on Carter Green; an all-vocal evening with country quintet Home Free, touting their new Any Kind of Christmas album; swing revivalists Cherry Poppin’ Daddies with a simulated World War II-era radio broadcast; The Four Phantoms with special guest Kaley Ann Voorhees, who portrayed Phantom of the Opera’s Christine on Broadway; and the return of Jane Lynch’s Swingin’ Little Christmas

Apart from the holiday theme, the coming weeks bring the return of tabla master Zakir Hussain in a duo with fellow Indian musician Rahul Sharma; the return of saxophonist Boney James, celebrating his new album, Slow Burn; singer-actor Leslie Odom Jr., Tony- and Grammy-winning star from the original cast of Hamilton; our first visit by the often-requested YouTube sensations The Piano Guys; the incomparable Dionne Warwick; and rising crossover star Matteo Bocelli, son of the great Andrea Bocelli, who released his debut solo album just last year.

And especially for families, we’re pleased to present the magic of Michael Grandinetti and the comical percussion hijinks of Buckets N Boards

As always, thanks to all of our sponsors, donors and volunteers for their support, and thanks to you for your patronage.

Piano Man

Jon McLaughlin forges his own path through the music business

Jon McLaughlin’s early career was a whirlwind. Hailing from Anderson, Indiana, he grew up playing piano and writing songs, and he had already begun recording and touring independently while still a music student at Anderson University. After graduating in 2005, he almost immediately signed with the Island Def Jam label for his first two national releases, 2007’s Indiana and 2008’s OK Now. He sent albums and singles up the rock, Christian and adult contemporary charts, licensing songs for movies and television. He toured with Sara Bareilles and Kelly Clarkson, among others. He appeared as himself in the 2007 film Enchanted, which led to a performance on the Academy Awards. It was a lot.

Whirlwinds fade in time, but McLaughlin didn’t blow away, despite radical changes in the music industry. Persisting through the decline of CD sales, the rise of social media and streaming, record label consolidation and other trends, he has continued building a consistent catalog and a loyal fanbase, touring nationally and releasing six more albums independently and on the smaller Razor & Tie label.

They gave me such a huge, like, blast out of a cannon that I was able to build this following that has really supported me through all of these changes, the fanbase that comes out to see the shows.
– Jon Mclaughlin

McLaughlin – who lived in Carmel and Indianapolis before moving a decade ago to Nashville, Tennessee – certainly has fans here in his home state. His first appearance at Allied Solutions Center, in November 2022 at the 500-seat Tarkington theater, sold so quickly that a second show was added. Last December, his Jon McLaughlin & Friends: Home for the Holidays show sold out the larger Palladium. This year, the second edition of the holiday show will grace the Palladium on Dec. 14.

Having released three collections of Christmas music, with another coming soon, McLaughlin has plenty of material to draw from. He hopes to return each year with new “Friends.”

“Unlike regular shows, where I try to make it as different as possible every time, with Christmas stuff it’s a little different – you want to build in a tradition,” he said by phone from an acoustic tour stop in Pennsylvania.

“I’m hoping every time I can bring different guests, but the throughline is that these are people who I really admire, who I want to see play music on the stage at the Palladium.”

This year, his guests will include Nashville artist Austin Brown, a longtime member of the country vocal group Home Free (coming Dec. 3 to the Palladium) until his recent departure to focus on family and solo work; and Gabe Dixon (“one of my music idols”), a Tennessee-based singersongwriter and keyboardist who has recorded and/or toured with folks like Paul McCartney, Alison Krauss and Tedeschi Trucks Band.

“It’s mostly me onstage with my band, but we have these little breaks when the guests come out, McLaughlin said. “I want it to feel like there’s a little breath of fresh air where the scene changes for a song or two, and then I come back.”

Growing up in Anderson, McLaughlin took to the piano as a kid. He found inspiration in Billy Joel and Elton John, to be sure, but also in jazz legends like Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. Then he discovered Ben Folds (who played the Palladium in October) and saw wider possibilities for a pianist in the pop/rock field.

“I was 13 at the time or something, and I would be listening to Art Tatum, but none of my friends knew who Art Tatum was,” recalled McLaughlin, now 42. “I remember, literally, the exact spot where I heard the Ben Folds Five for the first time. It’s the only time I’ve had this experience. It was like hearing a new color … He sort of bridged the gap: Cool kids are listening to him, but he’s an amazing pianist. It was a meshing of two worlds that I always felt had to be separate.”

Married with two daughters, McLaughlin has kept busy since the release of his last pop album, 2021’s All the Things I Say to Myself. For the past four years, he has hosted a weekly-or-more podcast, Dadville, with neighbor and fellow musician Dave Barnes, talking about family life and current events with friends and celebrity guests. Last year, he released Mood III, the third installment of an instrumental piano series he began in 2019. Mood IV, a collection of instrumental holiday music, will be on sale this season.

And a bigger project is underway. McLaughlin is wrapping up work on his next pop album for release in 2025, and he’s feeling good about it.

“I hesitate to say it, because artists say it about every record, but this is one of the best albums I have put out,” he said. “I’ve really taken my time and kept writing and kept writing. I’ve written more songs for this album than maybe any other album I’ve done. It has a little bit of a throwback aesthetic to it. The first single has kind of a Motown vibe.”

As for the ups and downs of the music business, McLaughlin just tries to roll with the changes. The CD era he came up in is long past, for example, but the resurgence of vinyl LPs provides opportunities for interesting cover art and packaging, which he enjoys experimenting with. He appreciates the major-label support that launched his career, but he is happy where he landed.

“They gave me such a huge, like, blast out of a cannon that I was able to build this following that has really supported me through all of these changes, the fanbase that comes out to see the shows,” he said. “I’ve been able to fumble my way through a progressing and ever-changing business without completely falling off the tightrope. I might not get it right with every release … but I’ve got that fanbase there that will support me, so I’m not just riddled with anxiety trying to hit the bull’s-eye every time.”

The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

America has a rich tradition of creating music—classical, folk, pop, jazz, rock. These songs have a timeless meaning and resonance, whether they are days or decades old.

Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is affiliated with Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts and is one of a handful of worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook in numerous ways:

• The Songbook Library & Archives houses documents, images and historic artifacts of songwriters Meredith Willson ( The Music Man) and Harold Arlen ( The Wizard of Oz) and artists like Natalie Cole, Andy Williams, and Sammy Davis, Jr.

• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery – free and open to the public – is a multimedia educational center with rotating exhibits exploring history and popular culture through the lens of music.

• The Songbook Academy ® is a national summer music intensive that provides pre-professional training, world class mentorship and performance experience for aspiring high school singers.

• Perfect Harmony is a music resource that provides care partners with generational music and activities to engage older adults through a shared music experience.

• The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes singers, songwriters and other artists who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year.

EXHIBIT GALLERY HOURS: Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm

The Gallery is also open one hour prior to select Center Presents performances at the Palladium.
